ome people travel out of country and can’t wait to talk about it when they return home. For others, such as people who travel on humanitarian missions, the impact of conditions in poverty-stricken areas can render them speechless.

Such was the case with optometrist Shaun Golemba and his wife Shannon, an elementary school teacher in Port Alberni. The couple recently returned from a trip to Nicaragua, where they and optometric assistant Lynn Lozinski conducted some humanitarian work.

“It was about a week before we could start talking about what we saw. It was like being in a state of mourning,” said Shaun Golemba, the owner and operator of Valley Vision Optometry.

The Golembas and Lozinski joined 16 other volunteers in a remote part of Nicaragua from Feb. 21 to March 7.

The other volunteers were doctors,

respiratory therapists, nurses, two other optometrists and translators, Shaun said.

The initiative was organized by the Ascenta Foundation, an organization that organizes multi-discipline volunteer medical missions to impoverished countries around the world.

Golemba and Lozinski provided eye examinations, treatment and referrals, while Shannon, who is a teacher by trade, provided general volunteer services.

The group worked at a school – Shaun that was temporarily converted into a clinic in Riscos De Oro, a small mining settlement in northern Nicaragua near the Honduran border.

While volunteers worked at the clinic during the day, they stayed in a hotel the town of Rosita, which is a 45-minute drive away.

Robbery is an issue, so the group was given a military escort to and from the clinic each day, Shaun said.

Patients came from surrounding remote settlements. Communicating with them about

the clinic was a challenge because there are no phones and much of the population is illiterate, so sending notices were out, Shaun said.

Patients ranged in age from babies that were eight days old to an 84-year-old man. Ailments treated included skin conditions, parasite infections, gynecological issues and copious dental work.

Prenatal issues were common.

And Shaun saw several children who had cleft palates. People with Golemba bow legs, possibly from rickets, were common, as were people with extra digits on their hands. “These are the kinds of things that might have been common in Canada more than 100 years ago,” he said.

“Everyone has a radio so each of the 10 communities was called to come to the clinic on different days,” he said. “A lot of people walked and took two days to get there, and there were a lot of people who travelled eight to 12 hours by horseback.”

A licensing bylaw would have improved the way the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District handled a recent dog attack, says Beaver Creek resident and dog owner, Shelley Thorpe.

But with no such bylaw on the books nor on the horizon, she fears further attacks will likely take place.

The matter arose after a pitbull boxer cross attacked Thorpe’s nine-year old Jack Russell Terrier on March 16.

The dog had wandered onto the Thorpe’s property on Friday and spent the night. Thorpe had never seen the dog

The dog was still around on Saturday morning so Thorpe tried to lead it off the property and send it on its way.

Thorpe’s husband Mark came out of the house holding onto his toddler daughter with the couple’s dog following. The smaller dog approached the bigger one, which attacked the terrier, grabbing it by the throat, Thorpe said.

The couple managed to pry the larger dog off the smaller one.

Thorpe tethered the dog to a dumpster until police arrived and took the animal to the SPCA. The Thorpes drove their bleeding dog to an animal hospital in Nanaimo, where it was treated for

The medical bill came to $750.

The attacking dog has since been retrieved by its owner from the SPCA, Thorpe said.

But privacy issues prevented disclosing his identity.

several nuisance calls about dogs, and says that he’s only responded to one other dog attack since becoming the bylaw officer.

The real issue, Astin said, is that the ACRD doesn’t have a licensing program requiring dogs to be licenced and their owners identifiable.

“If we don’t know where a dog comes from then the bylaw is difficult to enforce,” Astin said.

A licensing program was discussed by ACRD directors at one time but the matter never advanced beyond this, Astin said.

Compounding matters is that the ACRD doesn’t have a contract with the SPCA to impound stray or vicious dogs.

Astin is working with the SPCA to try and find out who the owner of the attacking dog is so he can proceed with resolving the matter within the ACRD mandate, he said.

As for the SPCA and licensing program, the power of the people would have to drive it. Further discussion is up to regional directors, he said.

ACRD chair Cindy Solda said she wasn’t aware of the attack at the Thorpes’, but was familiar with a licensing program.

The City of Port Alberni has a licensing program which operates on a cost-recovery basis, Solda said. But even so there is a cost to taxpayers and that would be the lynchpin in an ACRD program.

“It will be difficult to implement because of the cost involved. It would be a tough sell,” she said.

City hopeful to fill empty store Council begins bylaw review

Zellers closed its doors for the final time on Saturday, March 16. But the move doesn’t mean the city has shut the door on finding a replacement tenant or owner for the threestorey building that takes up a city block on Third Avenue at Mar Street.

“There is continuing interest in the building and there have been a couple of (questions) with regards to zoning,” city economic development manager Pat Deakin said.

“We’re slowly making progress.”

The building and four acres of parking lot is zoned commercial (CMX), “which has an amazing number of potential uses. It’s pretty broad,” Deakin said.

CMX zoning is to maintain a “vibrant and healthy mixed use area,” he said.

Deakin has entertained three recent queries about affordable housing, but said the people inquiring were looking at the parking lots and not so much at the building.

The city has had a range of inquiries— everything from retail to a mix of retail and residential, seniors’ residences above and services such as chiropractor or optometrist below.

“I do remain optimistic that it will be purchased and that we will see a use in

The City of Port Alberni is reviewing and updating its zoning bylaw. But city councillors want residents and business owners to tell them what needs to be changed or included in the new zoning bylaw.

The current bylaw has been in place since 1998. Council recognized the need to review it, and included the project in its 2013 priorities, according to a press release.

Zoning bylaws help municipal governments implement their Official Community Plan (OCP) and other plans. Municipalities are required to re-examine the bylaws periodically.

“Since Port Alberni adopted a new OCP and the Uptown and Waterfront Plan in 2007, it is a prudent time to update the Zoning Bylaw and make sure it is consistent with the

goals and objectives set out in those plans,” Mayor John Douglas said in the release.

“We are encouraging residents to get involved in helping to shape this important bylaw.”

The first round of community consultation will take place Wednesday, March 27, with a community meeting and open house at the AV Multiplex in the upstairs meeting room starting at 4 p.m. A presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. More details are online at www. portalberni.ca.

Raven debate can start soon Both big parties have betrayed us The day is coming soon when those opposed, in favour and undecided about the proposed Raven coal mine will actually have something concrete to debate.

Compliance Coal, the owners of the project proposed for about five kilometres west of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal, are expected to make their formal application to the provincial government by the end of the month.

That application will have environmental assessments, although there will undoubtedly be arguments over that science, who completed it and its methodology, etc. At least there will be something to deal with, for the government and the general public. Up to now, it’s been about posturing and conjecture. Certainly much of this posturing and conjecture — from all sides of the debate — has been based on history and some science, but until the real application is in the government’s hands and the time for official public debate begins, the arguments can only be general in nature.

It’s a political hot potato, at least that is certain. And with a provincial election looming, this will be one of the hottest issues in many constituencies on Vancouver Island.

Because it’s election time, the NDP are also attacking the process and the B.C. Liberals, but again, the meat of the issue will be in the science.

We will not pretend to be scientists. We are, however, attracted by the possibility of hundreds of well-paying jobs in our part of the Island for a couple of decades. However, the creation of these jobs makes absolutely no sense if it has the effect of eliminating hundreds of current jobs in what’s become a fabulous industry here, aquaculture.

We don’t believe a huge project like this can be either dismissed, or endorsed, quickly and purely on principles like ‘no coal mines ever again’ or ‘we need the jobs, period.’ That’s pure rhetoric. We are hopeful the submission of the application will provide some meat to the debate for all sides.

ICTORIA – There was some public business conducted in the final frantic days of the B.C. legislature session last week, but you likely wouldn’t have heard much about it.

Premier Christy Clark’s skimpy governing agenda was overshadowed by the delivery of an internal investigation report into her government’s ethnic outreach program.

A review by four deputy ministers detailed what reporters already knew from a memo and meeting notes leaked to the NDP. The plan started in the premier’s office, led by Clark’s deputy chief of staff, who resigned as soon as it was made public.

A B.C. Liberal Party employee attended the first meeting, expressly intended to organize events to impress immigrant communities,

It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. This is the B.C. Liberal-NDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and

other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light.

Both of these schemes have the same stink. Both are intentional abuse of taxpayers’ money for the political gain of the dominant parties.

There is no moral high ground for either of them.

Is city funded properly by tax To the Editor, Though a rural resident, I’ve watched the city’s budget discussions with some interest.

The ideology of this council seems fully disjointed. The collection of garbage and sewage along with the supplying of water must pay its own way—yet the Parks and Recreation branch must not. The entire parks and rec budget manages to get only 25 cents of every dollar from what is charged at the gate.

In other words, 75 per cent of their budget

comes from the tax collector—extracted from people who don’t use those facilities.

And the tax collector is asked to take your money to fund McLean Mill.

Similarly, considering the state of development in Port Alberni has no one wondered why we are paying for an economic development office?

Over the year, all I’ve ever seen from that office is grant applications to higher levels of government.

Again, resorting to the tax collector— and that’s not the way to build a viable economy.

Is there any question that past actions by those in local government have not led to affluence? Is it not time to reconsider the direction being travelled?

Do you believe that you should be taxed in order that the bureaucratic process can determine which business is funded?

It is never too late to turn things around and it can’t be done any sooner.

It is time to be honest with ourselves.

The free market supports all who exchange value for value. The free market

is the source of our wealth. Give it some thought.

Papal glory was overrated To the Editor, I admit being an observant antagonistic, anarchistic, agnostic cynic (Triple A-C), who holds nothing against anyone of any faith or religion.

My belief is that everyone should be free to worship whom or what they wish, as long as they don’t try to convert me.

My main beef with believers is when they pronounce their faith or denomination to be superior to all others;

an attitude that has been the basis of so many wars and conflicts since time immemorial.

Having said that, I’m always interested to learn how religions relate to their followers, and nobody on our little blue planet could have missed the recent Papal Conclave in Rome.

From my position way outside the box, it was quite amusing in these days of Twitter and Instagram, with CNN reporting from inside a virtual Sistine Chapel complete with ballotburning stoves, that participants chose to communicate with smoke signals.

Every news outlet had their “experts” to guide the ignorant like me, with much speculation about where the 266th Pope would come from and why. I even learned the last non-European Pope was Syria’s Gregory III in 731, whose first decision was to ban horse meat.

I hoped that the Cardinal from Milan, whom bookmakers had made the frontrunner, would be the chosen one; coming from Italy’s most corrupt city where the Calabrian Mafia

known as ‘Ndrangheta hold the real power.

That seemed such a delicious irony.

Of course, those 115 progressive redsuited celibate senior citizens had other ideas; choosing an Italian immigrant’s son from Argentina on March 13, to coincide with the date that Pope Felix III began his reign back in 483, no doubt.

So much media descended on the Vatican before, during and after the conclave; the shenanigans were turned into a global spectacle.

Seasoned news anchors and reporters fawned over every word they were told by those holding somewhat dubious hierarchical positions in the Roman Church.

It was another example of what I call the “Oprahization” of the news, not unlike the way Olympic Games are covered when the media attempts to fill our heads with feel-good meaningless details about participants of another fetid, fallacious farce.

Next up will no doubt be all the nauseating details of the birth of a future British monarch.

Last Fall many of us planted Spring flower bulbs. They sat dormant most of the year, the soil of the earth covering them in darkness. When we buried them deep, we were unsure what their future would hold, either for their survival or for their appearance. Yet each spring, in faithful grace, they emerge from their hiding place as beautiful flowers, royal in their stature and whispering tales of the gospel. Every year, after their majestic bloom, they wither into death, recoiling into themselves and laying dormant in wait. Yet, in their proper time, they rise again into new life. The gospel on display, right underneath our front room windows.

As we come close to the end of the season of Lent it is a wonderful time to remember that God wants us to celebrate life as we go along. So smile every time you see Spring flowers. It reminds us that we are deeply loved, and that no matter what we face in this life, Christ has gone there first. And there is always beauty. And there is always hope.

he Port Alberni Shelter Society plans one more open house in the near future before roping everything together to submit to funding agencies, society spokesperson Myron Jespersen said.

Between 120-150 people attended the last open house, held March 14 at the Best Western Barclay Hotel.

“This is another step in the process and I thought it went well,” Jespersen said.

“The main point was to engage people and get more ideas and I felt we accomplished that.”

The function was from 3-8 p.m. and attendance fluctuated, Jespersen said.

“A lot of people came between 3-5 p.m., it died down at dinner time, then it picked up again between 7-8 p.m,” he said.

No one mood dominated among the people who attended, he said.

“Some people came opposed and left that way, while others who were opposed left more favourable to the idea.”

People were given

the opportunity to ask questions and contribute ideas.

There was a wide variety of questions with no one category tilting the balance, Jespersen said.

Officials received 37 responses, and ideas included better facility and neighbourhood lighting, as well as creating a community garden. “I think that’s doable because there will be vacant land on either side of the new facility,” he said.

The new Port Alberni Shelter Society facility is no longer just an abstract idea.

Plans for the new shelter were unveiled at the society’s open house March 14 at the Best Western Barclay Hotel.

The new shelter building will be in the shape of the letter J. The lower floor will house services, a dining area kitchen, offices, laundry, as well as mechanical

and electrical rooms.

The upper floor is where residents will be housed.

One wing will house short-term residents, while another wing will house long-term tenants. Rooms will be a mix of single and dorm style (three to four residents per room).

There will also be five rooms set up especially for those with handicaps.

third man pleaded guilty on Tuesday in the beating of a fisherman on the sidewalk by the PetroCanada gas station on River Road last summer.

BC Provincial Court Judge P. McCarthy handed Matthew Labadie, 22, a one-year suspended sentence for the beating of Bert McCarthy, who received a broken leg and other injuries in the 2012 incident.

Labadie pleaded guilty to common assault in Port Alberni provincial court on Tuesday morning.

Labadie was also sentenced to 11 months’ probation, ordered not to have contact with the victim and ordered

The two youths who were also involved in McCarthy’s beating were given similar sentences earlier this year.

“Assaults that involve more than one person on another are unacceptable in a civilized society,” Judge McCarthy said.

“All of the individuals should understand that violence is not an acceptable way of resolving disputes.”

The sentence was a joint submission between the Crown and Labadie’s attorney Chris Churchill, the court noted.

The arc of events began on May 12, 2012 when McCarthy was assaulted by three males outside the Petro-Canada gas station on River Road, prosecutor Christina Proteau said as she read the facts in court.

McCarthy was taken

to West Coast General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with head injuries and a severely broken leg.

RCMP used video evidence to trace the owner of one of the trucks involved in the incident. The owner, an adult male, was taken into custody.

After being told what happened, he said he wasn’t responsible, told police the names of Labadie and the two youths, and they subsequently turned themselves in.

In a statement to police, McCarthy said he saw two pickups with jet skis at the gas station, and asked the owner about them.

The older of four males asked him if he had a problem and called him by a racial slur, McCarthy stated.

McCarthy, who is aboriginal, said he replied, “No, I don’t have a problem.”

McCarthy said he walked away from the scene but turned and saw that three men were following him. The next thing McCarthy knew he

“The Crown was not able to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt,” Proteau said.

Churchill said Labadie takes responsibility for his part in the incident.

He admits to following McCarthy, to fighting with him and to punching him when he was on the ground.

Labadie further turned himself in and cooperated with police, Churchill said.

Labadie’s account of what happened that night differs from McCarthy’s, Churchill said.

According to Labadie, McCarthy approached the group in an aggressive manner and got into an argument with the other unnamed adult that was present (but not charged).

McCarthy accused the group of running over a fishing net in the river earlier then swore at the man before walking away, Labadie said. Labadie followed and the fight ensued.

“I wish it never happened, that’s about all I have to say,” Labadie said.

A substantial theft of copper wire between China Creek and Nitinat Lake on Vancouver Island forced BC Hydro to cut power to 88 homes on the Ditidaht First Nation reserve for two days last weekend.

On Thursday, March 14 a BC Hydro crew responding to a service call at Ditidaht discovered a substantial amount of copper wire had been stolen off approximately 200 hydro poles.

Copper ground wire conductors were ripped off the poles along a 62-kilometre line, BC Hydro community relations manager Ted Olynyk said.

Power was cut to the entire community at 5 p.m. Friday and wasn’t reconnected until Sunday afternoon, after crews spent all day Saturday replacing the copper ground wires with

composite wires— which are worthless in the scrap metal market, he said. Port Alberni RCMP are also investigating the theft.

“It was a very difficult decision on our part,” Olynyk said about de-energizing the community. “It is not something we like to do. Safety is No. 1 for us because we’re dealing with electricity.”

BC Hydro still doesn’t know the cost of the damage to the China Creek line, he said Monday.

Only two ground wires were operational in one 30-km stretch, creating a dangerous situation for the community, Olynyk said.

Crews are also checking the line all the way out to Bamfield; some damage has already been noticed.

The theft was discovered after BC Hydro crews responded to a call

from Ditidaht about kids getting shocked after touching a fence, Olynyk said. Crews fixed that problem but in the process realized the ground wire was cut to a nearby pole.

Further examination uncovered more poles with severed wires.

“We’re lucky this didn’t cause any serious injuries to a member of the public or to our crews,” he said.

A BC Supreme court justice has sentenced a Port Alberni man to two years in prison for a 2008 boating accident that killed a woman near Bamfield.

Supreme Court Justice Frits Verhoeven handed down the sentence to Joshua William Escott, 42, in the Supreme Court room at the Port Alberni courthouse on March 1.

Escott was convicted of dangerous operation of a vessel last year.

According to court documents, Escott and Kristianna Rode, 31, were piloting their boat into Useless Inlet near Bamfield when they collided with a boat driven by a couple attempting to leave the inlet.

The collision sent Rode flying into the waters of Barkley Sound. All efforts to

“Maintaining strong communities motivates us,” says Lori Camire, executive director of Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot.

The program will create new electronic materials to highlight businesses for sale in B.C., with a goal of increasing the number of businesses listed on the Venture Connect website to 200.

PORT ALBERNI - The provincial government has signed a Labour Market Partnership agreement with Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot to support Venture Connection, a project that encourages potential buyers to purchase B.C. businesses, help prepare business sellers to ready their businesses for successful transition and protect and grow local employment.

The program will be based out of Port Alberni.

Venture Connection will build on the successes of the 2011 Venture Connect pilot project, with the goal of reducing the impact that retirements in small businesses can have on communities.

Currently, more than 50 per cent of employment in B.C. is created by small business, and one in seven business owners in rural B.C. is over the age of 55, according to government statistics.

Employees get fresh start thanks to Kuu-us program SUSAN QUINN

Several Alberni Valley businesses are helping employees get ahead by supporting Kuu-us Crisis Line Society’s Fresh Start program.

Fresh Start provides employment attire to people who otherwise cannot afford it.

The program itself is getting a bit of a fresh start, spokesperson Mya Driver said.

“We’ve had a couple of people come in and ask about the program, wondering if we have any shoes.

That’s where it started,” she said.

Clothing donated to the Fresh Start program will be separate from the regular Kuu-us clothing program, and will be allotted on an as-needed basis, she said. Seva Dhaliwal is overseeing the program.

Local businesses are getting involved by donating clothing and accessories to the program. Mark’s, for example, helped one employee keep a new job when she needed specialized antislip footwear. Gayle Stephen-Player, from Gayle’s Fashions, said she and other Uptown merchants will be donating clothing.

Other stores that have donated to the Fresh Start program include Jay’s Lace It Up, Treadsetters Shoes and LB Woodchoppers. The Attic has agreed to donate new clothing every second week, Driver said.

Fresh Start is in need of good work shoes as well as running shoes, dress pants and shirts for both men and women.

“We always need socks. They go very quickly,” she added.

Anyone wishing to donate items may do so by calling Kuu-us at 250-723-2323.

The new year has begun.

All 29 boys are in school. Five others are studying outside.

One boy has completed secondary school with very good marks and is teaching Grade 6-7 until university begins in September.

His sponsors in Port Alberni are willing to help him attend university.

Four boys who left to go back to the streets have come back.

One boy, I am not sure whether he is going to stay; he is very street wise at 13.

He has never had a home so he is not used to living by rules.

We will be looking to hire a director as I have reached the age of stepping down.

I will make sure the new person hired understands the vision and hopefully the project will grow and blossom.

We have hired a new lawyer. She is a woman, to help us with legal issues surrounding land we bought to build another school.

She has been very good so far. I have some running to do to the land office and she will have all she needs to go to court.

Our building fund at Into All the World (IATW) has grown to more than $10,000.

When it reaches $20,000 there is a fund in IATW that will match our total.

We have a piece of land here to sell that will help bring us closer to our total.

We have the architect’s plan and builders lined up. I am hopeful building may start in 2014.

APR replaces worn out ties along railway line Volunteers with the Alberni Pacific Railway will be busy this weekend replacing worn out railway ties on a stretch of train track between Compton Road and Lathom Road.

The Island Corridor Foundation provided the APR with funding

to replace several hundred railroad ties between the Port Alberni station and McLean Mill National Historic Site. The APR bought 300 ties and began work last weekend, according to volunteer David Hooper.

A tie-changing machine was brought

to the Alberni Valley from Nanaimo to do the work. “It is an ingenious machine with hydraulic rams that does the work of several crews of railworkers, so the APR people are very happy,” Hooper said.

Hooper reminds drivers to be careful at rail crossings around the Alberni Valley until at least Sunday afternoon, when the worked is estimated to be completed. editor@albernivalleynews.com

The spar tree that is the focal point of the steam donkey demonstration at McLean Mill will be replaced this spring.

The original spar tree was found growing on the site where the steam donkey demonstrations take

place; it was topped and rigged several years ago. However, a specialist discovered this year that it was rotten about halfway up, said Jack James, who oversees the steam donkey demonstration.

James will lead plans to raise the new spar tree. Plans are to raise the tree in the traditional way that

loggers working in the steam era would have done it, James said. The new spar will sit on a mat using guy wires to keep it in place.

The original spar tree has been cut down and the stump cleared from the site.

Eye diseases rampant in developing country From / A3 A lineup of more than 100 patients greeted Shaun each morning, and volunteers from other disciplines saw roughly the same.

“We saw and treated more than 2,000 people for the four days that we were there,” he said.

Shaun treated a host of eye ailments during the four days he was at the clinic.

Pterygium, a noncancerous growth of tissue across the white part of the eye, was common.

As well, every second person suffered from dry eye conditions brought on by the climate and bright sunlight, he said.

Because many patients were illiterate, nearsightedness wasn’t common.

What there was of it came from people who created crafts, he said. As well, Shaun saw several cases of presbyopia, a condition that makes it difficult to focus on objects up close.

“In Canada we see the onset of it in people starting at age 45. But in Nicaragua, we were seeing it in people at age 35 and younger,” Shaun said.

It was Lozinski’s third humanitarian trip—the first two were with World Vision Canada to Mexico and Kenya.

“I love to help bring sight to people who can’t get to a place where they can get help,” Lozinski said.

The Nicaraguan trip differs from other trips Lozinski has been on.

“The other ones just involved eyesight.

This trip was larger and involved optometry, dentisty, pharmacy and medical,” she said.

Lozinski remembers a little boy in Nicaragua who had severe hyperopia (farsightedness), the likes of which she never sees in patients in Canada.

“He couldn’t see much of any detail in anything,” she recalled.

“That’s what proves to me that this is worthwhile, to see that,” Lozinski said.

When dispensing glasses to patients, Shaun used glasses that were donated by clients at Valley Vision.

Some patients’ conditions were beyond Shaun’s ability to treat.

He recalls a family of three children who he diagnosed with advanced cataracts.

“Two of the cases were really bad but one wasn’t. They stood a chance of getting some vision so I made a referral for further treatment,” he said.

The impact of grinding poverty and multiple births from one mother made a deep impression on Shannon, who works

as a teacher in School District 70.

She saw first hand that hard labour, poor nutrition, sanitary issues and lack of comprehensive health care combine to wear people down prematurely.

“Poverty ages people rapidly,” Shannon said.

“I helped with a woman who was the same age as me (34) but I thought she was in her early 50s.”

There were no pharmacies and hence no birth control, and Shannon says she was struck by family sizes—in some cases comprising of 11 children.

The Dual Admission program enables secondary students to apply to NIC and UVic at the same time, but take up to two years of their university courses at NIC. This program started in 2011, and allows students to stay home, save money, and adjust to postsecondary schooling before heading to the university.

six years old and acted like Shannon’s shadow for the four days that they were there. Bubbly, impish and full of wonder the girl often tugged at Shannon’s shirt for attention or to show her something.

On the last day there, the little girl ran away with the little bit of change she scraped together and came back with a can of Coke, which she gave to Shannon.

“If she were born somewhere else she’d have such potential.

Instead, she’ll likely have lots of children when she’s young then start to have health issues,” Shannon said.

“I wanted to hide her and take her back home.”

The group left Nicaragua and arrived back in Port Alberni on March 7.

The Golembas were glad to be back home, and found a new appreciation for health care and access to services.

“We even appreciated how clean it is here when we got back,” Shaun said.

The couple found they couldn’t talk about their experience for about a week after returning. But situations arose that triggered memories of their trip.

“How do you explain to a six-year-old child what a privilege having supper is,” Shannon said. “And when I see kids in a classroom I can’t help but think of that little girl.”

laying at home in the Dawg Pound helped the Alberni Valley Bulldogs even up their best-of-five B.C. Hockey League quarter-final playoff series with the Nanaimo Clippers.

And no matter what the outcome of the series — it was decided Wednesday night, after the News went to press — the sold out crowds on both nights solidified The Alberni Valley fans’ position as some of the best in the league.

“It was electrifying to be in (Weyerhaeuser

Arena) tonight,” head coach Kevin Willison said following the Bulldogs’ first home game on Monday, which they won 4-1.

The game was the first complete sellout some of the players have seen this year.

The Bulldogs then beat the Clippers 3-2 on Tuesday to draw even with Nanaimo at two games apiece.

“These guys have the will to win, Willison said after Tuesday’s game.

“They want to show the world they are winners.”

Bulldogs goaltender Jay Deo made the difference in the home wins, Willison said.

Deo turned away 41 shots on Tuesday night, and helped

The Bulldogs’ younger players are experiencing playoff pressure for the first time and there was a hiccup or two.

But, those young players have young legs, and their speed wore the larger Clippers down, he added.

“They’re young and they lost their composure a bit.

The defense gave me a few more grey hairs tonight,” Willison said. “But at the end of the day they got the win.”

Midgets play big Port Alberni’s Midget Bulldogs are 2-1 so far at the Tier Three tournament being played in Port Alberni this week.

The Bulldogs opened with a 7-2 victory against Langley on Sunday. The Bulldogs lead 2-1 after the first period and were up 5-1 in the second before taking the game 7-2.

The Bulldogs hit a speedbump on Monday when the lost 3-1 to the Smithers Storm. The game was tied 1-1 after the second period then Smithers scored two unanswered goals in the third to take the game.

The Dawson Creek Canucks were Alberni’s next opponent, and they beat them 7-1. Alberni lead in all three periods, scoring three goals in the second period.

Softball signup starting soon Registration continues this week for the Alberni Valley Minor Softball Association, and president Cal Davies hopes to reach his goal of 500 kids this season.

House league registration for kids between five and 18 years will take place Thursday, March 21, Tuesday, March 26 and Thursday, March 28 at the Echo Fieldhouse, from 4-7 p.m. each night.

Several registration nights have already

been held, including one at the Port Alberni Friendship Centre—a first for the softball association, Davies said. “We had a wonderful response.”

The new location elicited some new players, which pleased Davies in his quest for more players.

The softball association also has a program operating in the middle schools this year, teaching skills and drills to new players.

With the hope of additional players

comes a need for more coaches, and the association is prepared. Organizers are planning some coaching clinics to help both new and experienced coaches.

Uniforms are provided and handed in at the end of each season. All other equipment, including helmets, is provided as well, he said.

The regular season opens April 16. The Alberni Valley will play host this year to the Bantam B (Under16) girls’ provincials.

Open Mic hosts launch Word on Fire Open Mic at Char’s Landing next Wednesday, March 27 will feature the launch of Stones, an anthology compiled by members of the Easy Writers group from Nanaimo.

The evening will start with local

writers, followed by the launch and readings of poetry, stories and memoirs from the Easy Writers.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $54, which covers refreshment and a draw.

The Rollin Art Centre is excited about our current art exhibit, which showcases local husband and wife photographers Ati and Orsi Gereb. The title of this incredible selection of vivid photographs is “Women and Children from around the World”.

The Gerebs’ exhibit runs until April 10.

Words on Fire Open Mic happens at Char’s Landing on Wednesday, March 27. This rendition will feature the Easy Writers writing group from Nanaimo. They will be launching their anthology Stones.
