Presented by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC, the awards have been presented for the past 21 years and showcase the high-quality work of B.C.’s home building and renovation community.

The fourth step is to check on the progress during your renovation. It is very important to keep in regular contact with the people working on your house. This leads into the fifth recommendation, discuss your project. If you notice something that you want changed or you have any questions, don’t hesitate to talk to your renovator and make sure you’re both on the same page.

Finding a use for those reclaimed pieces

By Maggie Calloway An interior design style which has great appeal is mixing modern, with sometimes very stark lines, with pieces made of reclaimed wood and even old machinery repurposed into functional furniture. The advantage of repurposing old boards and machinery is they are mostly one-of-a-kind and as such much more interesting.

Craig Pearce, principal of Union Wood Supply Co., is passionate about aging objects of industrial origin and designing and building with reclaimed wood. In fact, he cheerfully admits he was born into the wrong era. After “making his bones” working with a rustic log cabin furniture maker, Pearce went on to furnish his home with his own designs then filled the demands from friends. It was a natural next step to form Union Wood Supply Co. “As far as finding architectural salvage goes I have spent many years doing this as a hobby. I have travelled all over North America and made many great contacts,” he says. “I still travel a lot because salvagers usually specialize in one or two things and I want as much variety as possible so I still need to hit the road. We go to cities we know has some good old industrial history and start checking it out.”

Even talking about the “hunt” as he calls it, you can hear his excitement.

“We just got back from Oakland, California and bought a couple of pieces from an antique dealer. When we got talking he said if we wanted to look at some industrial pieces we should meet him at an isolated warehouse,” Pearce says. “This is how we find some great

pieces that are not always on display; we recognize each other.”

Old-growth wood is found in demolition sites, salvage yards and abandoned buildings. Other prizes such as barn doors, lighting and old bricks are carefully removed and transported back to the shop to sometimes become part of a new project and sold.

These pieces are unique and often tell a story of a time and place no longer part of our more fast-paced life.

They are often pieces made with pride to last more than a lifetime.

Let there be light: finding great lighting takes some research

By Maggie Calloway So you are all excited about your impending renovation. You have met with your architect, chosen a contractor and are all ready to begin … or are you? One professional who should be part of the team from the beginning is a lighting professional, which is not to be confused with an electrician. This oftenforgotten professional is key to how you will live in your renovated home and, even more importantly, how you will feel in the space going forward.

“I advise clients to do some homework, go through publications, magazines and the like and see how everything fits together.

When they get a sense of what they want and what feeling they want to create in the space, consult with a lighting designer,” he says. “The one thing which changes a space the most is lighting and some people are very much affected by lighting so it is very critical to the success of the project.”

Delores Ginthner of the University of Minnesota has done research into the effect of lighting on how we feel and how we use space.

“Thinking about the layers of light and how light affects the users of a space on both a psychological and behavioural level will present you with a mental lighting design concept when someone asks how you light a certain space,” she says. “Lighting is a key factor in helping the space meet the intent of its owner and the needs of its users. Keep that in mind, and remember that often incorporating a lighting designer into the design team could be quite beneficial to the outcome.”

tions and show how it will look in the space.

This is the point where changes can be made if the client does not feel comfortable with the degree of light, the intensity, etc.,” Chambers says. “We have the ability to put the client into the atmosphere which is hard to imagine just looking at drawings. It is much easier to change drawings than change lighting when the renovation is complete. Lighting is the hardest element to figure out because it is so individual. We can demonstrate how say a halogen, a fluorescent or an LED is going to

look, function and feel.”

We are beginning to see how important it is to get lighting right. How frustrating it would be to finish a renovation which looks fantastic but then realize there is nowhere for a big reader to snuggle down with a good book or a home chef to enjoy working in the kitchen.

Renovations are stressful enough and to end with a disappointment would be horrific. Take the time to seek out the right professionals; you’ll be glad you did.

Skylights great for more than just letting light pour in

By Maggie Calloway If there is one thing which will make a huge difference in both how you live in a space and, even more importantly, how the family feels about the space they live in, it has got to be the installation of skylights.

We live in a climate with many months of grey rainy days. This is one of the prices we pay for the lush scenery, but if we live in a home with a dark interior the other price we could pay is the effect that has on our mood.

Growing herbs a great addition to the garden

By Maggie Calloway With the explosion of interest in cooking and baking at home, it should not come as a surprise the parallel interest in growing herbs. Even if you live in the tiniest condo and cannot even contemplate a garden, you can still have almost the same fresh herb selection as a full-on garden.

Miles Hunter of David Hunter Garden Centers, is an enthusiastic champion of growing your own herbs.

“If you are growing herbs for the first time, start with something easy to grow; rosemary, mint, basil is a great start,” he says. “Some people have a problem with basil and the most common problem is they buy a plant that has been raised in a greenhouse then transferred from a greenhouse environment to an indoor environment and it doesn’t always transition well. I recommend starting basil from seed even if you are growing outside; it is very easy to germinate in a pot on a windowsill.”

He notes that a mistake he often sees is when basil is put outside too early, as after-dark temperatures must be over 10 degrees Celsius or the plant might wither. He also tells people to keep their mint in a pot or an area where it can be contained as it grows so quickly.

The holy trinity of herbs is basil, oregano and thyme.

“Thyme is a great herb because there are lots of varieties,” Hunter says.

“Thyme is one plant that has so many different flavours, like lemon thyme which is wonderful and spicy thyme, so there are lots of choices; common English thyme would be the most popular.”

You also need to keep in mind that though most herbs are perennial and with care can last for a few years, basil and cilantro are not perennials and need to be planted anew each year.

Asked what is the best potting mix if you are growing in pots, Hunter says an all-purpose potting soil is generally the best. You want something with good drainage which often includes a mix of peat moss and perlite, and don’t forget to water on a regular basis.

Hunter suggests companion planting is something to really consider when growing herbs but be careful about what you choose to put together.

“Mint is better on its own because it will take over the entire pot,” Hunter says. “Dill is another (that’s) best on its own as it doesn’t always play well with others. Basil is excellent when grown alongside tomatoes; it helps influence the flavour of the tomato.”

Getting your home in order for the spring doesn’t have to be time-consuming and labour-intensive, says Linda Chu of Out of Chaos.

By Maggie Calloway The thing about owning way too much ‘stuff’ is it affects not only how you live in your home but how you feel internally.

Most of us suffer to some extent with the 21st century malady called ‘more is better’ instead of ‘less is more’. Some of us are drowning in ‘more’ and need to come up for air.

Our closets are stuffed with things we never wear, never cook with and never

play with. Rooms aren’t used for their original purpose because of the piles of things impeding any normal use. And if that isn’t bad enough, we are now renting storage space to handle the overflow. If you are looking around at piles of clutter and it seems just too overwhelming or you just need help creating systems to maintain order, there is a solution.

To help you get from there to a new start imagine what your home will be like to live in once the chaos is removed. Wideopen spaces, windows scrubbed to let the

“People have such an attachment, such an emotional attachment to their home they feel if it is in disarray there must be something wrong with them,” she says.

“The reality is there’s so much pressure these days between working, kids and their activities, parents, etc. that something has to give. People should know that realizing they need help in this area of their lives should be empowering.”

One of the mistakes most of us make when we realize things are getting a bit out of control is to run out and buy beautiful baskets and containers to control the chaos instead of concentrating on function.

“Organization is an essential; it is also relative to the individual; it is (also) the functionality. Just because it looks good doesn’t mean it works,” Chu says. “This is not to say you can’t have some really nice visual pieces which work but the main focus is on function.”

If you want to get your home organized by yourself but feel totally overwhelmed, try this method. Keeping in mind your home didn’t get cluttered overnight, vow not to get discouraged if it isn’t organized in a weekend. Start in one room and every day get rid of at least three things. Some days you may feel inspired and get rid of many more but the next day you’re back to at least three. Pick a room and start there until the room is organized so you feel you are making progress. Three a day doesn’t seem like much? In a year you will have gotten rid of at least 1,095 things you don’t need.

Make the most of small bathrooms Renovating bathrooms is commonly at the top of home improvement to-do lists. Though some rooms around the house may remain timeless, bathrooms show their age much more easily.

A frameless shower can take up less space in a small bathroom.

Although many may dream about creating a spa-type oasis in their homes, not everyone is lucky enough to have a large bathroom, much less a large budget for a full-scale renovation. Small bathrooms are common, particularly in older homes, but they needn’t force homeowners to compromise on style when renovating. By thinking creatively, homeowners can maximize their spaces and redo bathrooms in ways that bring out their best assets.

When space is at a premium, it’s best to look for fixtures and items that fit with the scale of the bathroom. Although you may want a large vanity and cabinet in which to hide all of your toiletries, this may not be practical -- taking up most of the bathroom real estate. Instead, look for elegant pedestal sinks that have a much smaller profile.

Use optical illusions to make the bathroom appear more roomy. For example, lay tile diagonally to create the impression of space. A large mirror will reflect the room back and make it appear much larger than it really is.

Select lighter hues in paint colors and accessories.

Dark paints and fixtures could make the room feel cramped. In a small bathroom, it may make the space feel claustrophobic. Instead, think light and bright and the room will instantly feel more airy.

Minimize wall hangings. Filling the walls with

knickknacks may contribute to clutter and make the space appear closed in. Use decorative items sparingly.

If possible, store towels in a closet outside of the bathroom. This way you won’t have to devote space inside the bathroom to a closet, leaving more room for other things.

While some like the thought of a separate bath and shower, in smaller bathrooms this may not be possible. Instead, look for a combined shower and bath, or select a walk-in shower with a much smaller profile.

Maximize wall space if you need storage. Find cabinets that will fit beneath windows or be able to fit in thin areas between sinks and toilets. Over the toilet is prime area for cabinetry.

Consider a frameless shower. This is a partitioned area of the bathroom that’s set aside for the shower and is typically only cordoned off by a thin wall or piece of glass.

Think about installing a skylight if you prefer natural light if there is no room for a traditional window.

A wood patio can be unique and stained or painted in a variety of colors. It also may be less expensive to install than concrete or pavers. If the shape is relatively simple, a do-ityourselfer also may be able to do the job without hiring a professional.
