Prince George woman killed in crash A Prince George woman was killed in Friday’s accident on Highway 97 north of Quesnel.

Dead is Leanne Marie Burchill, 20, of Prince George.

Burchill was the front-seat passenger in a pickup truck that was involved in a head-on collision with another pickup truck on Highway 97 about 10 kilometres north of Quesnel near the turnoff to 10 Mile Lake at about 9:15

a.m. on March 15.

Burchill was deceased at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

Police have determined that a tow truck working in the area on an unrelated matter, resulted in the south bound traffic coming to a stop. One of the vehicles in this line of

southbound traffic pulled out into the north bound lane in an attempt to continue south. This resulted in a head on collision with a north bound pickup truck.

Weather and road conditions were less than desirable at the time of the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash, or has any information pertaining to the collision are asked to call the RCMP or Crime stoppers.

Merlyn Horton, executive director of SOLOS (Safe Online Outreach Society), visited Prince George last week to talk to people, particularly kids, about online safety. Horton was invited to share her presentation in honour of the 15th annual awareness week for Communities Against Sexual Exploitation of Youth (CASEY).

“What I’m talking about is the fact that everything they post online is public, and everything they post online is permanent,” Horton said.

Much of what she has to share covers the basics of protecting privacy, starting with not sharing user names or passwords.

“I’m also stressing the permanence of their digital reputation and the consequences it has in their future life,” she said. “I share stories, videos and visuals, so it moves along fairly quickly and keeps them entertained.”

One of the most famous stories she uses involves Schneider, a University of Pennsylvania student who posted a photo herself online, drinking out of a red cup, with a caption that read ‘drunken pirate’. The university wouldn’t grant her degree, saying she behaved in a way which was unbecoming to a teacher.

She sued,but the court upheld the decision, saying as a public employee her right to free speech wasn’t protected.

Horton added, when it comes to sexual exploitation, risk is not evenly distributed.

“Vulnerable kids at risk online are the same ones who are at risk off-line.”

Statistically, she said, the most important factor in lowering risk is teaching children how to conduct themselves online.

Not talking about sex with strangers online and not letting anyone take nude photos of them are important ways of staying safe.

“I really try to stress with them they have the power over where they go or what they do,” she said.

Another facet of online interaction includes bullying.

“Some drama gets escalated because it’s online,” she said. “Kids have had drama in their lives for a long time. We call it bullying.”

Horton said she has a Twitter feed where people have been discussing bullying lately, talking about how it’s a difficult concept for children.

“Some people are saying we have to deconstruct the idea of bullying because sometimes kids are the aggressor and sometimes the victim. So we have to start talking about conduct, good conduct, and how we expect kids to act online.”

Horton said she is a former youth outreach worker who was working with street kids. She said she got too old to be a youth worker, and has been a geek for a long time.

She studied adults with a sexual interest in children online in 2000.

Tying her computer proclivity with the job, she found a way to get the information she learned through various methods to the people who needed most to hear it.

“The biggest target for this information, the people who need to be safe, are the kids themselves,” she said,

Street Humanities gives people who’ve had few breaks in their lives a chance to take college courses, expanding the limits of the world they are used to.

Diane Nakamura, executive director of the Association Advocating for Woman and Children (AWAC), and Wayne Hughes, executive director of the Northern John Howard Society, updated council on the successes of Street Humanities during Monday’s meeting.

The impact the program has on some people was underscored by Vern Haley, an alumnus of the Baldy Hughes Therapeutic Community program, who Nakamura said was a star pupil.

“It was the first time in my life, at 46 years old, I was walking into a college,” Haley said.

A man who spent 17 years in jail and battled drug addiction, Haley said if a security guard had seen him in his past life entering a college, he’d have been asked to leave. In the Street Humanities program, Haley looked into a microscope for the first time and saw DNA. “I’m amazed at the changes that’ve been coming since I cleaned up my life,” Haley, who’s upgrading to get his Dogwood and who will then pursue a chosen career, said.

With the aid of a PowerPoint presentation, Nakamura explained Street Humanities targets at-risk and vulnerable adults, providing a two-semester non-credit lib-

eral arts program at CNC. It began in the city as a pilot project in 2005, based on a concept used in New York City.

The presentation points out the program comes from the growing interest of at-risk and vulnerable adults in Prince George who have demonstrated motivation to make their lives better.

Teaching volunteers are provided through the college, UNBC and the community. The NJHS and AWAC each provide a coordinator.

The presentation goes on to say some graduates continue pursuing an education and complete credited programs.

“Meaningful engagement and exposure to education, arts and culture are key ingredients to crime reduction and reintegrating at-risk and vulnerable people

back into mainstream society.”

“Thanks for sharing your experience, strength and hope. It’s critically important to others to see what you’ve done with your life,” Coun. Brian Skakun said, expressing his gratitude to Haley, as did many councillors.

Coun. Frank Everitt expressed his gratitude to the presenters for their dedication to the program.

“You put in place the building blocks for our city to make it an even better lace to live,” he said.

Street Humanities is funded in part through a social grant from the City of Prince George.

Social grants for 2013 were part of Monday’s agenda, and approved later in the evening.

Roof of nursery caves in

Friday morning at approximately 6 a.m, a portion of the roof of a seedling facility at Canfor’s JD Little Tree Nursery in Prince George collapsed due to snow loads.

No one was present in the facility at the time and there were no injuries. The building contains 16 million seedlings valued at approximately $3 million. Due to safety conditions, site access is restricted to emergency personnel. Canfor anticipates being able to construct a temporary shelter to house the seedlings at safe temperatures until repairs are made to the facility.

Refined bandwagon N

ewspaper tycoon David Black’s proposal to build an oil refinery at Kitimat is, as they say, getting some traction.

Recently Black announced that he is close to having the $13 billion needed to build the refinery and has hired Swiss company Oppenheimer Investments to help assemble the financing. However, Peter Ewart writes in the Tyee that information on Oppenheimer Investments is scant and that its website has some nice graphics but no information on actual projects it has worked on. But that’s another story.

Victoria this week released a document entitled Review of the Proposed Kitimat Refinery Project: Technical Assessment and Asian Supply/Demand Analysis. The report was prepared for the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, in consultation with the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas by Navigant Consulting.

Navigant states, in the report, that building a refinery on the coast of British Columbia has economic merit and should be seriously considered by the government of British Columbia.

The report finds that such a refinery would provide incremental long-term economic benefits to the region.

On March 7, Premier Christy Clark delivered a statement to the B.C. legislature where she committed the government’s support to move this proposal forward “where it can be judged on its merits by a robust, rigorous and independent environmental process, free from political influence,” states a government press release.

“This is a credible proposal from a credible B.C. businessman,” said Clark. “And without question, this would be the largest single private-sector investment in the history of our great province. And it would be, potentially, a tremendous game-changer for our children and their children.”

To heck with the Wood Innovation Design Centre, if this is the best thing to happen since sliced bread why aren’t our local politicians – municipal, provincial, and federal – lobbying to have such a refinery located near Prince George? We say near because we don’t need another one in the bowl, but we have lots of land in the periphery that could be used.

Forgetting, for a moment, the entire argument about increased oil tanker traffic and whether we should be shipping oil, refined or otherwise, to the West Coast at all, wouldn’t it make more sense to lessen how far we ship bitumen, given that the refined product is much less of an environmental hazard? A refinery near Prince George would also possibly be able to access the Kinder Morgan pipeline, that already exists, to the south coast.

And, given that local politicians are always desperately seeking economic development opportunities, why aren’t they on this bandwagon?

The gift that keeps on giving Editor: I received a call from my wife this afternoon and she asked me if I had a minute to chat.

“Of course,” I wisely replied.

“What’s going on?”

“I was in the checkout at the Superstore and found myself $20 over budget. A lady behind me passed the $20 to the cashier, and stated, ‘I’d like to take care of that for you.’”

My wife replied, “Oh thank you, but that’s OK as I shop on behalf of my employer and it’s really not necessary.”

The lady would not take no for an answer and insisted she would feel better if the $20 could be accepted.

My lady responded in kind by thanking this lovely and thoughtful individual.

“What is your name?” she asked.

“Julie, my name is Julie”.

“Julie, just so you know, I work with an organization that meets the needs and requirements for adults with disabilities. Your kind contribution has put the receipt to $250. I will now be able to use this coupon and get a free turkey. The ‘guys’ (clients) will now have an Eas-

Julie moved forward and gave my wife a big hug followed by the words “God bless

No science behind fluoridation

Editor: To continue something historically that was done autocratically in the 1950s because of a perceived lack of dental health amongst Prince George’s poorest members is not based on fact.

It was merely instituted based on a hidden political agenda, at that time. This is the source of fluoridation of Prince George water.

Shane Giesinger wrote that Prince George has been “medicated” without their initial permission all these years. Doesn’t that sound illegal? Doctors cannot do this. Why is the city getting away with fluoridation of drinking water to this day?

The Prince George Safe Water Coalition, which was led by Marilyn Juds (who recently died), for years has attempted to share the research indicating the negative effects of fluoride on human beings. The health unit knows. Care for infants includes warnings not to use tap water to mix with baby formula. Fluoride interferes with brain development in infants is the reason why.

So our hero decides the only logical place to drive is in lanes two and three, thereby blocking both lanes to other traffic behind him.

I also observed one fellow whose driving habits were not borne out of the weather conditions. I was driving east on 15th Avenue, and I could see

this guy in his truck coming up behind me, at a speed it’s safe to say was somewhat over the speed limit.

He swung out into the other lane (no signal) and he caught up to me, then almost immediately swung back into my lane (again, no signal) as we approached the red light at Highway 97.

Then, the light turned green, and he looked both ways, then eased through the intersection and proceeded at a safe and legal speed.

I couldn’t figure it out at first? Was this a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality at work?

Or did have something to do with the police car which had pulled up beside us before the light turned green?

Dancers have come from all over the district to display their dance talents.

Instructors, choreographers, parents, siblings and friends were in the audience Sunday, the second day of the week long Prince George Dance Festival. This year’s adjudicators are: Highland dance, Lindsay McBlane; ballet/modern, Andrea Gunnlaugosn; and stage adjudicator Joshua Beamish.

From a delightful Froggies number (10 and under category) with young dancers from Judy Russell’s Enchainement Dance Centre to a beautiful Reflection group dance by Excalibur Theatre Arts and a surprising Poulet Lake from Spectrum City Dance from Prince Rupert – with one errant “chicken” dropping “eggs” on stage – the performances were wonderful to watch.

Tickets to see the remaining dances this week are available during the festival at Vanier Hall. The Gala Event is on Friday evening.

“This year we have over 800 solo performances, 100 duo performances and 190 group performances,” said Julie Fisher. She and Bonnie Hatley co-chair this year’s Prince George Dance Festival.

Volunteers are key with this annual event, said Fisher.

Indeed parent volunteers can be seen helping out with everything from serving up meals to snipping a dangling thread on a costume.

UNBC students tops in Canada for project ALLAN WISHART

When the University of Northern BC team got their assignment at the Canadian Engineering Competition, Kayden Peters says there was one reaction.

“We just started shaking our heads,” says Peters, who was on the team of firstand second-year engineering students with Stephanie Doherty, Kathleen Horita and Kris Nickerson. “We started the day at 3 a.m. our time because we had just gotten in.”

The team was at Carleton University in Ottawa, after placing second at the regionals in Victoria in January.

“At the junior (first- and secondyear) provincials and nationals, you know nothing going in,” he says. “You don’t know what the project is going to be, you don’t know what materials

The assignment: Design a mechanism which could remove tinfoil ‘clots’ from a cardboard ‘artery’.

That was one of the reasons for the UNBC team shaking their heads.

“The regional competition came a lot easier,” Peters says.

“It was much more a question of physical engineering. We had our design ready to go by the first time mark, so about two and a half hours.”

With this assignment, that was when the work was just beginning.

“We were pretty close on time. The majority of our building was in the last hour or so. We spent a

lot of time before that waving popsicle sticks at each other.”

The materials for the project came from a ‘store’, where each item had a price.

“That was one of the things the judges looked at for your final score, your budget, so you had to be financially aware of how much you were spending on materials.”

Give this band a name

What’s in a name?

A lot if you don’t have one. A newly formed band that had their first practice last Sunday needs a name. Brought together by Earl Krushelnicki (founder of Blues Underground and owner of EGK Promotions), the band plays the kind of music he can “jive to,” he says.

“The great thing about jive music is that it covers several different styles of music from the Andrew Sisters to Imelda May to Van Morrison,” says Krushelnicki. “The band will put its own touch to the tunes, it has a few vocalists.

Band members play drums, bass, lead guitar, piano and sax. We hope to add a trumpet player soon.”

To help in the search for a name, the band (without a name) has come up with a “Name that Band” contest. Suggestions can be e-mailed and the band will choose the one they like best.

If two or more people suggest the name that is chosen, there will be a draw from those people to declare a winner. Band members will also be suggesting names. So if a name is picked that a band member suggests, then there will be a draw from the entrants to pick a person to receive the Prince George Association for Community Living

“We started by taking five or 10 minutes to ourselves to come up with ideas, then we came together and agreed on the design we were going to use.”

The person who came up with the basic design took on the role of project manager.

“When it’s your baby, you tend to come with ways to make it work,” Peters says.

The panel of judges included two engineers and one person with a medical background.

“That way, you had someone who could say, ‘That would work, but it might kill the patient’.”

The UNBC team came up with an idea none of the judges had thought of, involving slowly deflating balloons and scissors extensions to depress the ‘clots’.

“The medical judge asked us what we could do to do this on a smaller level?”

Peters says. “I’m

pretty sure he already knew how it could be done, but my first, joking answer was, ‘Use a smaller balloon’.”

Last year she moved to Prince George with her family (three children aged 15, 13 and 11, and her husband Alan van der Woerd, a chaplain at UNBC.) She left behind the daily sunshine, she says, but not her love of dance – she wants to perform in the community whenever she can.

Barrientos says although in flamenco dancing, the arm movements are precise and percussive footwork is measured to the music, there are places where a dancer can improvise a little.

“Flamenco dancing is an art form where there is passion and temperament,” she told the Free Press. “You can express your emotions through it. But you have to work at it, there is a structure to it, not just the 12-count, six-count hand and foot work – you have to pay attention to where the ‘accents’ fall in the music. You can improvise but you have to be in time with the music.”

And there is a skirt with a big train that you can twirl around,” says Barrientos. “I have special shoes that are especially made for flamenco dancing, they come from Spain and have nails covered in rubber. They are very comfortable and sturdy.”

Does she miss Mexico and the sun?

Yes, but she’s settled here now and likes it, she says. She also misses her native Costa Rica. When she returned there to visit her family in December, she was reminded of its beauty.

“It was the dry season there and the sunsets were just beautiful.”

Barrientos is now immersing herself into the local community. She volunteers at UNBC’s chaplain services and also teaches a weekly dance class at Judy Russell Enchainement Dance Studio.

Bourke recorded 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points to finish second in team scoring behind Colin Jacobs (53 points).

Other winners were: Jacobs - Hubbell Designer Goldsmith’s Player of the Year; Raymond Grewal - Scholastic Player of the Year; Zach Pochiro - Rookie of the Year; and Dan Gibb - Most Dedicated Player.

The UNBC Timberwolves held their annual awards banquet on Monday evening.

Taking home the top honours as Athletes of the Year were Sam Raphael (men’s basketball) and Mercedes Van Koughnett (women’s basketball).

Raphael was one of seven graduating Timberwolves in basketball and soccer recognized during the banquet. Each graduate was presented with a mini drum. Check Friday’s Free Press for a full list of the award winners.

The Prince George Cougars have missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The situation entering Saturday evening’s game was also similar to 2012. In each of the last two years, a loss in Kamloops in their second-last game eliminated the Cougars from the postseason.

But the mood following their final contest at CN Centre was different on Saturday than a year ago.

The Kamloops Blazers hammered the Cougars 7-0 on Saturday evening, a much different outcome than the 2011-12 season finale which resulted in a 4-2 victory for the home team.

Just like past seasons, the Cougars wrapped up their 2012-13 schedule with a home-and-home doubleheader against the Blazers. They lost 5-2 in Kamloops on Friday night.

The Cougars ended their 201213 schedule with 21 wins, 43 losses, two overtime setbacks and six shootout defeats (21-432-6). They finished ninth out of 10 teams in the Western Conference, 21st out of 22 squads overall, ahead of only the Vancouver Giants (21-49-2-0).

Asked to comment on next season, Cougars head coach Mark Holick didn’t pull back any punches.

“There’s jobs open, I’ll tell you that. There’s jobs available, and we’re going to have to really make sure that the kids that want to make this team have to have a really good summer and come into camp in real good condition,” he said. “They now know what’s expected, and what we need to accomplish as far as an effort is concerned and structure and what have you, and mediocrity is not going to be accepted.”

The Blazers finished in the top third in league scoring, their 261 markers ranking them seventh.

“Our defence weren’t exactly great in front of him either. They were continually turning pucks over and getting beat back to our net,” Holick said. “I’m not trying to defend Z or anything.

He probably would like some of those back too. It’s disappointing. It’s your last game, you want to win, it’s at home and you throw an egg like that.”

“That’s a great feeling for me personally. I was happy to get my 30th point and pass my rookie stats. It’s not something you want to be so close to beating

in your 20-year-old season,” he said after the game. “But under the circumstances, I changed my point output this year, being out for two months, but obviously any time I have success in Prince George I’m a happy kid and it’s always nice to come back.”

Third in the Western Conference at 47-20-2-3, the Blazers host the sixth-seeded Victoria Royals (35-30-2-5) on Friday to begin the best-of-seven opening round.

“It’s a new year. Obviously we’re happy that we get the home ice advantage,” Willick said.

The Cariboo Cougars knew the Okanagan Rockets would give them a challenging hockey series.

But they didn’t expect their 2012-13 B.C. Major Midget League season to end with a two-game sweep on home ice.

The Rockets clinched a berth in the BCMML championship series with a 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday at CN Centre. Spencer Hewson scored the game winner 6:04 into the extra frame.

In the first game of the set on Friday, the Rockets outscored the Cougars 4-3.

“They worked extremely hard,” Cougars forward Liam Blackburn said. “They wanted it as much as we did and last minute of the games and stuff, they just got the bounces and we didn’t.”

The Cougars entered the playoffs ranked second with 31 wins, eight losses and one tie (31-8-1). The Rockets were third in the regular season at 26-8-6. In the best-of-three opening round, the Cougars swept the South Island Royals while the Rockets needed three games to get past the Valley West Hawks.

The Rockets will meet the top-ranked Vancouver North West Giants (34-2-4) in the BCMML best-of-three final beginning Friday

at the Burnaby Winter Club. The Giants edged the fifth-seeded Greater Vancouver Canadians (22-15-3) two games to one in the other semifinal set.

Shortly after Saturday’s contest, an elated group could be heard cheering from outside the Rockets dressing room.

“I think it was simply just knowing and respecting your challenge ahead of you,” Okanagan head coach James Eccles said when asked what led his team to victory. “This (Cariboo) team here, I give hands down, they’re the hardestworking team in the league.”

Cariboo head coach Trevor Sprague acknowledged the Rockets’ effort.

“The blocking shots was phenomenal.

They know they have an average goalie,” he said. “When you got an average goalie and you got your team buying into blocking shots and making saves, their forwards and D made more saves than (Brenden) Mills did. As it goes further into the playoffs for them, that’s going to be harder and harder to do.”

The Giants defeated the Cariboo squad in each of the league finals from 2010 to 2012. At the time of his interview, Eccles didn’t know whether they’d be facing the Giants or Canadians.

“The Giants, we’ve met our match with them,” said Eccles, noting that they finished 1-1-2 in their four-game season series.

midget champion in the regional championship series. That winner will enter the 2013 Telus Cup national midget hockey championship in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. in April as Team Pacific.

Blackburn and Tyler Povelofskie scored the Cougars’ goals on Saturday. Justin Marreck and Brett Mennear recorded the other Okanagan markers.

Nathan Warren took the loss in both games for the Cougars. Mills was between the pipes for Okanagan in each of the weekend victories.

On top of defence, speed helped lift the Rockets to victory.

“It’s no secret out there. We do have a very fast and creative team,” Eccles said.

Sprague considered the 2012-13 season a success. They set a team record with 31 wins, and Blackburn’s 85 points (35 goals and 50 assists) was the highest single-season Cariboo scoring total.

“We’re here for seven months and you look at the biggest thing we did here, we got to build another 20 guys and a pretty special group of guys in that dressing room, something that those guys are never going to forget,” he said. “When they move on, you know they’re proud to be a Cariboo Cougar and where they come from. People know who they are. There’s a stamp of approval throughout the hockey world of what a Cariboo Cougar is and how they’re willing to go out there and play.”

Kings’ backs to walls The Prince George Spruce Kings faced elimination for the first time of the 2012-13 campaign when they hit the ice Tuesday evening at the Coliseum.

Coming off a 5-3 victory the previous night, the Chilliwack Chiefs held a two games to one lead in their best-of-five Mainland Division semifinal series. After the Spruce Kings pulled off a 3-1 victory in the first game of the set on Friday, the Chiefs responded with a 10-1 pounding over the Spruce Kings on Saturday.

The first two games were held at the Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. The series shifted to the Prince George Coliseum for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Tuesday.

The Spruce Kings were hoping to defeat the Chiefs in Game 4 to force a fifth and deciding game this evening in

Chilliwack.

In Monday’s game the Chiefs pounced on the Spruce Kings early, Phillip Zielonka giving the visitors a 1-0 lead only 20 seconds into the contest. After a marker by Austin Plevy at 4:21, Zielonka’s second of the game at 9:31 gave Chilliwack a 3-0 lead.

Early in the second period, things appeared to go from bad to worse for the Spruce Kings.

Mathieu Tibbet squeezed a low shot past Spruce Kings starter Kirk Thompson to give the visitors a commanding 4-0 lead.

Although they ultimately lost, the Spruce Kings made a game of it by outscoring the Chiefs 3-1 in the second half of the game. Coltyn Hansen scored the home team’s first goal, a power-play marker at 15:07 of the second period.

eficiary of a Spruce Kings giveaway early in the third period, and deked out Thompson to give the Chiefs a 5-1 lead. A pair of Spruce Kings goals in the final frame, by Trevor Esau at 2:47 and Jake LeBrun at 9:43, rounded out the scoring.

Mitch Gillam took the victory in the Chilliwack net.

The Spruce Kings entered the series ranked third after finishing the regular season with 25 wins, 22 losses, one tie and eight overtime defeats (25-221-8). The second-place Chiefs (33-21-1-1) finished nine points ahead of the Spruce Kings.

In the other Mainland semifinal, the top-ranked Surrey Eagles (35-13-3-5) carried a two games to one lead over the fourth-seeded Langley Rivermen (24-26-1-5).
