Businesses, residents expect more from Town Council and Economic Development office

Smithers’ business community was out in full force at last week’s council meeting to encourage the town to be more open for commerce.

The turnout was in response to a Letter to the Editor in the March 13 edition of The Interior News, written by businessman Dennis Groves about what he

sees as a lack of support from Town Council in encouraging new business and supporting established businesses.

“There was a large turnout of people with similar concerns,” Groves said.

“Really my concern is about increasing our tax base.

“My real desire is to see smaller-type businesses that employ five to 10 people where somebody puts up a building, bricks and

mortar, and pays property taxes.

“Their employees all pay taxes and buy a house.

“It’s the spin-off — the town gets a couple hundred thousand worth of tax revenue.

Groves also brought up concerns about some of the town’s priorities, namely the new arena project, and said the Town needs to get its priorities straight.

“It’s a really cool and innovative idea,” Zimmer said.

“It’s huge especially with all the biomass around us, especially with the beetle kill that’s around us.

“It’s nice that they’re looking at ways of utilizing this timber that would normally just rot away.”

In addition to furnishing heat for the municipal building, the biomass heating system is expected to provide heat for a nearby business, the Telkwa elementary school and four nearby residences.

Some of the funds, about $36,000 are dedicated to the development of a plan for sustainable subdivisions.

Graf said such a plan is important given Telkwa continues to grow and there’s a steady flow of enquiries regarding residential, commercial and industrial uses “We are very excited to receive the Gas Tax funding,” Telkwa Mayor Carman Graf said.

Transfers from the Gas Tax Fund are providing communities across Canada with predictable long-term funding to address infrastructure needs.

In 2011, the Government of Canada passed legislation committing to invest $2 billion annually from the Gas Tax Fund to infrastructure projects.

“These projects are an excellent example of how the Government of Canada is working with different levels of government supporting long-term economic growth and building for the future,” Zimmer said.

Zellers closure opens retail gap

In response, councillors mentioned some of the initiatives they are currently working on that may not garner that much attention but are still important in terms of stimulating economic development.

The leasehold subdivision of lands surrounding the Smithers Regional Airport, sanitary sewer main construction along Harvard Way and a business plan for the Fall Fair grounds were brought up as projects underway that aim to bring in more of a business tax base.

“I was on last council and I think this council has continued to try to do things to improve the business atmosphere in this town,” Councillor Frank Wray said.

With the abundance of mining and myriad other projects being proposed and worked on in the region, Groves said Smithers was in a unique position to take advantage of the economic benefits they present.

“It’s too little, too late,” he said.

“Terrace airport is already tied up with a lot of these outfits that are working up north, with properties and offerings.”

Also in Groves’ letter was the need to fill the retail gap that appeared after the closure of Zellers, and to a lesser extent, Fields.

a big box store to Smithers, some against.

Longtime Smithers resident Gail Cole said she has five grandchildren and is now the caretaker of her 82-year-old mother-in-law.

Seniors on a fixed income and young families, especially, she said, need more alternatives when shopping for clothing and other goods.

“We talk about it daily — where can we go shopping, and it’s a struggle for us,” Cole said.

“I know a lot of people that are low-income families and they struggle on a daily basis to clothe their children and it frustrates me to no end.”

Cole said she sees no reason why Smithers can’t have the beautiful boutique shops on Main St. and some lower-cost alternatives.

“Don’t get me wrong — I love Main St. and I shop on Main St. as much as possible but I have to be fiscally responsible as does my

daughter with her family,” she said.

“I’m not necessarily saying that Walmart is the answer, I’m just saying that something needs to be done to encourage these businesses to come to Smithers.”

Mayor Taylor Bachrach said filling this gap is something the Bulkley Valley Economic Development Association has been focusing on.

“Our strategy around business attraction and retention is we fund an armslength organization called the Bulkley Valley Economic Development Association and Allan’s [Stroet] job as economic development officer is to go out there and work with investors and talk about our community,” he said.

The lack of a replacement for Zellers and Fields has not been due to lack of trying, Stroet said.

“With Zellers and Fields closing, these are the following companies I have

spoken to or reached out to: Walmart, Target, Old Navy, Joe Fresh, Army & Navy, Please Mum, The Children’s Place and the Vanderhoof Department Store,” he said.

“All of them have said the market is too small to support a business, the space is not feasible, the space being the Zellers location.”

“The big box stores require a minimum of 40,000 square feet. That one is 25,000 square feet.”

Having a big box store to fill the retail gap is something Stroet, who is about to become a father, said he would be in favour of for personal and professional reasons.

“I would love to have those things come to town too because I look at them as a draw for other businesses.”

Bachrach admitted he was taken a bit off guard by the concerns raised in Groves’ letter.

“There’s a sense of real frustration that in some ways is a little surprising,” he said.

“The reason I say surprising is because council hasn’t necessarily heard the specific concerns about the direction we’re taking things in.”

Wray encouraged community members to talk to the councillors and mayor if they have any issues they feel are critical.

“The most important thing is that Mr. Groves has taken that first step,” Wray said.

“We need to hear the frustrations.

“We need to hear what the roadblocks are.”

Council approved a motion to bring this discussion forward to one of their upcoming Let’s Talk public forums.

The Bulkley Valley has embraced immigrants from all parts of the world for over 100 years. Robin Jeffrey was 7 years old when his proper English family landed in Montreal in 1957; the same year Smithers became a village. A five day journey by train brought them to Prince George and on to Quick where Robin’s father worked for W.L. Paddon at the Post Office, General Store and Paddon’s farm for room, board and $25.00 a month. “We were used to running water, electricity, paved roads and bus service.

When we came here running water was the river, lights had to be pumped up first, paved roads were mud trails, and bus service was the train.” Robin recalls trips to Prince George taking over 20 hours; excursions to Smithers almost 3 hours. Robin met his wife, Cindy, at a Blue Grass Concert at Driftwood Hall in 1980. They still reside on the farm established by Robin’s father, Gweek Farm, named after the village they came from in Cornwall, England. Cindy runs the popular Gweek Riding Centre.

Robin says “I love the mountains, the quietness, walking for three hours and not running into anyone. I love this area.”

Highlights growing up included the Fall Fair in Smithers. “There were all these people at the Fall Fair from Moricetown through to the other side of Houston. The Fair Grounds were a big local gathering.” As Smithers prepares for our 100th Anniversary Homecoming Week August 2nd-10th, 2013, the Fall Fair Grounds, a gathering place for almost 94 years, will provide camping as well as nightly entertainment on the Fair Grounds Stage. Renewal Northwest engages

Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen’s Renewal Northwest Tour provided a forum for Smithers residents’ voices to be heard.

The purpose of the tour was to engage residents on how to define and evaluate the key factors that make a good project for the northwest, whether a pipeline, mine, fisheries or forestry project.

“People are really interested in this conversation and hungry for it,” Cullen said.

“We’d like people to come and set up shop here yet we hold some things

very dear.”

Eight other similar meetings were held

by Cullen across the region.

Issues that kept popping up in the meetings included the the environment, economic benefits and job opportunities and the integrity and track record of companies looking to do business in the area, Cullen said.

The themes and values discussed will be compiled to form a kind of citizen’s guide, Cullen said, to allow residents, businesses and government to evaluate projects proposed for the area.

This guide can be used to help residents, business and government understand what is

important to people in the region, Cullen said.

“Right now, the government is doing a terrible job of trying to understand our values,” Cullen said.

“We like projects that actually fit with who we are.

“I think smart companies, ones that want to do business here in the northwest, will have no problem following these kinds of guidelines.”

And businesses are taking notice of the social license needed to set up a successful project in the northwest.

Kristen Rock, Spectra Energy’s community coordinator, took part in the meeting and said they have

realized their project needs to fit within the values deemed to be important to people in the region.

“My job is to get out there and listen,” Rock said.

“Their concerns are environmental, social, economic and that’s what we want to hear.”

“We want to know what their concerns are and we want to make sure we’re doing things right.”

Spectra Energy is currently working on a proposal to transport natural gas 850 kms from the Fort St. John area to a potential export facility in Prince Rupert.

Cullen said he expects the guidelines to be available to the public by early this summer.

Former Telkwa Mayor Sharon Hartwell entered the fray to become the Stikine riding’s representative in the provincial legislature for the Liberal party on Tuesday.

Born and raised in the Bulkley Valley, Hartwell grew up on a farm near Quick before her family moved into Telkwa in the 1960s.

Over the years, she has held various jobs, from restaurant owner and baker to a position with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Currently, she is employed with Central Mountain Air. No stranger to public life, Hartwell was a Village of Telkwa councillor for more than five years

before being elected to the Mayor’s chair, a position she held for 12 years.

While representing Telkwa, Hartwell was also elected to the boards of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and sat as the chair of the Northwest Regional Hospital District.

These positions gave her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by smaller, rural communities across the country, she said.

While admitting that the Liberal party and leader Christy Clark have had some major missteps in the lead up to the provincial election, Hartwell said she prefers to focus on the issues that matter to people in the region:

“For me, this isn’t about politics, it’s about the people of Stikine,” she said.

“Playing politics is not helping the people that need it today.

“It’s not helping people get back to work or grow business or grow the economy.

Right now, as I see it, there are nothing but opportunities for the region.”

There needs to be a balance, she said.

“The northwest of B.C. is going to be the breadbasket of the province,” she said.

“How are we going to manage that moving forward?

“It has to be a focused, managed approach and that does not mean development at any cost.”

As of the press deadline on March 18, only incumbent NDP MLA Doug Donaldson had declared his intentions to run in the provincial election, tentatively set for May 14.

I’d shop at Walmart if it came to Smithers.

Yep I said it.

I feel so much better now.

At the regular Town of Smithers council meeting March 12, business owners and community members packedinto council chambers to take part in the discussion over a Dennis Groves’ Letter to the Editor in The Interior News February 27.

Included in the a letter was a mention about the closure of Zellers and Fields and the weekend trips many Smithereens make to Terrace and Prince George, etc. to do their shopping While “Walmart in Smithers,” was not the main focus of Groves’ letter, the audience took ahold of that point and many mentioned it during the comment portion of the meeting.

I think it’s time to have that conversation again.

Let me start by saying I would prefer to shop locally and do so whenever I can.

But I know many people in this town, my family included, regularly travel hours down a sometimes-treacherous highway for the sake of Joe Fresh baby clothes, and many other items not available in Smithers or too expensive for someone on a journalist’s salary.

I have a young family that I need to look out for.

It’s true that when people go out of town for shopping, they are also seeing a dentist, going to a movie, eating and staying at hotels.

It’s not uncommon for families to spend thousands of dollars over the course of a weekend.

Years ago when Canadian Tire came to Smithers, certain segments of the population were up in arms over the the store settling here.

In the end, the products offered by Canadian Tire complimented what was already offered in Smithers. “ That was a really controversial topic and at the end of the day, it didn’t hurt anybody’s business,” Groves said.

“It’s a really big contributor to our economy.”

Smithers’ homegrown shops have found a market and have been successful in doing so.

Walmart or similar big box stores also serve a purpose and fill a need.

I think the two can complement each other.

Let’s keep this money in the Smithers economy.

Good governance key to a better tomorrow

T

he final session of the legislature before the May 14 provincial election came to an end last week.

It was dominated by a number of scandals associated with the BC Liberals, a surprisingly unfocused legislative agenda by the government and some positive initiatives for Stikine.

Amongst this preelection backdrop, the official opposition was able to introduce a couple of legislative initiatives that will make a change for the better.

One of our private member bills would bring an end to the

use of taxpayerfunded, partisan political ads by establishing a process where the Auditor General would independently vet such initiatives.

The other bill is to register 16-year-olds with Elections BC so they are already on the registered voters list when they become eligible to vote when they turn 18.

This will enhance the ability to get younger people interested in voting and will provide a great opportunity for teachers at the senior secondary level to discuss civic engagement with a real mechanism at hand.

provide for us on a daily basis and people living here who have a deep attachment to the land and waters.

We also know that we have natural resources that are in high demand by others in the world.

I believe that by holding to the three elements of good governance I’ve described, a provincial government will be able to achieve the balance needed so that those of us living in Stikine and around BC can enjoy a good life now and into the future.

L etters TO: Gravel trucks a hazard Editor: My family and I were driving east from Smithers on January 29th, 2013.

We were returning to our home in the Burns Lake area after my wife was released from the hospital following surgery.

We left in the early afternoon and about 20 minutes into our trip, just east of Telkwa, we came around a corner and were pelted in a cloud of gravel from two snow/gravel trucks travelling at a high rate of speed westbound.

The blade on the first truck was down and on the centre line.

I had to instantly force our van into the soft snow on the shoulder.

Coming around the corner, there was no way I could have seen the two vehicles heading west and travelling so closely together.

Our windshield was hit in three spots with a crack migrating out from one of them.

The drivers of those trucks were travelling at a dangerous speed with gravel flying into oncoming traffic, putting myself and my family at risk.

The response from the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is that all responsibility is solely with private contractors.

The ministry’s interest appears to be limited to liability (money issues) and not public road safety.

AG report clears NDP caucus of wrongdoing

Not the type of news any politician wants to hear just months ahead of an election, but Stikine NDP MLA Doug Donaldson along with his fellow NDP MLAs were caught up in a political smokescreen.

The B.C. Liberal party issued a press release based on a leaked draft report by the Auditor General John Doyle on the legislative finances, which alluded to the inappropriate funnelling of constituency funds to an NDP slush fund used the funds to advance the party.

“This is of course a highly inaccurate news release and a diversionary tactic to draw attention away from their multiculturalism outreach fiasco,” Donaldson said.

The Liberal press release came just days ahead of the release of the report into the Liberal’s ethnic outreach strategy and

later a damning expose in The Province revealing the Liberal government used government resources during the last election in an attempt to advance the interests of the B.C. Liberal Party in swing ridings.

“They used ministerial assistants, people paid through taxpayer dollars, to do [Liberal] party business, not government business,” Donaldson said.

“That type of thing blurs the lines between Liberal party work and government party work.

“That leads to a lot of cynicism.”

The Auditor General released his report on legislative finances last Friday and the report contained no mention of the NDP joint-constituency fund.

“He [John Doyle] said there was no fraudulent behaviour to report,” Donaldson said was the Auditor General’s reply to journalists asking about

the NDP joint-constituency fund.

However, NDP caucus chair Shane Simpson, MLA Vancouver-Hastings, in addressing the Auditor General’s original concerns on how the funds were used, said the party would have to consider moving the account.

“The suggestion was that we may, ultimately to meet the concerns of the Auditor General, have to move the account outside of the (legislature) comptroller’s office,” Simpson said.

In the interim, the NDP caucus returned the remaining money, about $1,600 to each constituency office.

Simpson said the NDP originally approached the Auditor General with their plan to pool constituency resources in 2005 when limitations were imposed on constituency resources.

“The [NDP] caucus wanted to see how we could provide better support for

the constituency offices,” Simpson said.

For example, Donaldson said, the fund allowed him to join forces with Aboriginal Affairs critic, Scott Fraser, to run advertising providing information to First Nations groups on how to contact their MLAs and what the MLAs have been up to in the legislature.

“I couldn’t have done that type of advertising without our pooled resources,” Donaldson said.

When establishing the fund, the NDP did consult the Auditor General who advised the fund should be placed under the purview of the legislative comptroller.

Unfortunately, the operations within the comptroller’s office were somewhat lax, particularly the tracking of receipts.

Adding to the woes, Simpson said, the Auditor General also noted some of the advice the legislative comptroller offered the NDP caucus was wrong.

Bantams finish successful year It was an allSmithers final on March 10 at the Bantam Hockey Jamboree.

The Bulkley Valley Wholesale team edged out the Bassani Fuels squad 4-2 in the tournament final, after both teams went undefeated through round-robin action.

Spencer Anderson of Bassani Fuels scored the only goal of the first period but BV Wholesale fought back hard and late in the second Nate Steenhof and Matt Kapelari each scored to give their team a onegoal lead.

The third period was just as intense, with Esso’s Gabe Hilbach scoring to tie the game 2-2.

Smithers storms provincials

Smithers is being well represented on the provincial stage this week as the Bantam and Midget Storm and the Midget Girls’ hockey team are scattered around B.C. competing at Provincial championship tournaments.

As of noon Monday, the Bantam Storm are undefeated, winning their first two games 7-2 against Langley and 12-0 against Port Moody.

In the first match, Langley scored first against the Storm but Smithers answered back with five straight goals.

Langley came back with one more before Smithers shut them down and responded with a pair of goals to win the match 7-2.

Scoring for Smithers was Joel Patsy, Matt Walker, John Giddings, Fraser Dodd, Brendan Moore, Mitch Turko and Riley Coish.

The Bantams are playing in Dawson Creek.

The Midget

Storm opened their provincial tournament on Sunday with a 8-0 victory against Dawson Creek.

Michael Lynch scored a hat trick in the winning effort, Ross DeBeck and Luke Santerno each scored twice and Steven Egan netted one.

Smithers outshot their opponents 43 to 20 in the match.

The Midget Girls lost their first two games at their provincial tournament, held in the Lower Mainland.

The first game,

against Salmon Arm, saw Smithers lose 5-1.

Rachel Giddings scored the lone goal for Smithers, assisted

by Jenna Elliott and Faith de Steiger.

In their second game Monday morning against TriCities was a 9-0 loss.

Bowes-Lyon second, third at Nationals

Lea-Marie Bowes-Lyon captured two podium finishes at the Canadian Biathlon Championships in Whistler last weekend.

The Smithers biathlete won second in the Pursuit

event and third in the Sprint in the Masters division.

Fifteen-year-old Angus Tweedie, the other Bulkley Valley Biathlon Club member taking part in the competition, placed 20th out of 31 athletes in the Sprint event and 14th out of 29 competitors in the Pursuit.

The racers competed under tough weather conditions, coach Peter Tweedie said, as the rain and wind made an appearance during the weekend.

The event continued after Monday’s press deadline.

Contumelias was a member of the U18 Western Canadian Soccer team that travelled to Croatia to play against Europe’s best junior squads and went on to play professionally in Portugal.

He now works with Embody Life Youth Camps and as a certified personal trainer.

The camp, at Smithers secondary school, is separated into age categories.

Ages six to 12 practice from 9 a.m. to noon and 13 to 18-yearolds run from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Town of Smithers and Embody Life Youth Camps has lined up some serious star power for their Spring Soccer Camp, March 25 to 28.

Teaching Smithers youth about soccer is homegrown soccer star Daniel Imhof.

Imhof recently returned home to Smithers after a 14year career playing professional soccer in Switzerland and Germany.

During his career, Imhof played nine seasons for Swiss Super League team St. Gallen, where he scored a career-high 10 goals and won a league championship in his first season.

From 2005 to 2009, Imhof entered the German Bundesliga, playing for Vfl Bochum, where he played and defeated such European soccer superpowers as Chelsea, from the English Premier League.

As a member of Canada’s national soccer team, Imhof played 36 international matches.

That’s why Seabridge has donated $100,000 to Northwest Community College (NWCC). This contribution will fund a mobile training unit that will be used to deliver trades programs to local communities, which will train future electricians, carpenters, heavy duty equipment operators, welders, and millwrights. NWCC’s mobile trades program will assist in filling the local skills gap by bringing education to communities that need it most.

Seabridge’s KSM Project is located 65 km northwest of Stewart, B.C. The company has been working on the project for the past seven years, and it is still in the environmental assessment and permitting phase. The mine is estimated to take about five years to build once regulators have granted the necessary project approvals and permits. The project submitted its official Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Statement on January 31, 2013, which means it has yet to be approved for construction and operation. If approved, it will offer multi-generational employment for the residents of northwest B.C. during the project’s more than 50-year mine life.

“One of Seabridge’s goals is to maximize the training and employment opportunities for the communities in which we operate. This donation to trades training in northwest B.C. illustrates our continued commitment to local communities, as we continue to advance the KSM Project,”

said Rudi Fronk, Seabridge’s Chairman and CEO. “We are confident that an operating KSM Project will make a significant contribution to the B.C. economy. It is forecasted to generate over 6,500 full time jobs and approximately $48 billion in total contribution to GDP during its more than 50-years of expected operations.”

Northwest Community College has nine campuses in northwestern B.C., from Houston to Haida Gwaii, serving 35 communities—28 of which are First Nations. Many of the communities can be difficult to reach.

“This mobile equipment provides the opportunity for us to be versatile in delivering our trades training right in the communities where people live.

It addresses the need for people being trained in the north and in their communities, and allows residents to stay in the north and in their communities,” said Dr. Denise Henning, President and CEO of NWCC. “It’s just an honour to work with industries that really see the big picture. With this investment from Seabridge, geographic challenges will not hamper our ability to deliver training in the northwest, while making sure that when we talk about distributed learning, we are putting accessibility front and centre,” said Dr. Henning.

Smithers Crimestoppers goes digital

Smithers Crimestoppers entered the digital world earlier this year, with the launching of a Facebook page and, more importantly, a digital app so people can submit tips using their cellphones.

The app, called Web Tips, allows witnesses to a crime to enter the information regarding the crime using their phones as the incident is occurring.

“People are much more likely to report something the moment they see it,” Smithers Community Police member Matt Davey said.

Entering the

information as the crime is occurring, Davey said, also improves the accuracy of the information.

Since the launch of Web Tips, Davey said Smithers Crimestoppers has received 17 tips in the first two months.

“That’s a significant increase over the same time period last year,” he said.

In addition to the cellphone application, Crimestoppers also launched Tip Soft, a tip management system that allows Crimestoppers to contact tipsters to seek more information or clarification about information they provided.

The beauty of Tip Soft is it allows the communication between

tipsters and Crimestoppers while maintaining the anonymity of the tipster, Davey explained.

“The system gives us the opportunity to obtain more accurate and relevant information,” Davey said.

Euthanasia a crisis: Sommerville

Margaret Sommerville is taking a stand for those who do not have a voice of their own.

The McGill University professor and ethicist was invited to the Bulkley Valley by the Smithers Pro-Life Society to speak out against euthanasia and doctorassisted suicide at their annual spring meeting last Friday.

With an aging population, the issue will become even more of a topic going forward, Sommerville said.

As a professor of law and professor in the faculty of medicine, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are directly against everything she has ever learned, that we are not to intentionally kill, Sommerville said.

“I think it’s a crisis issue for Western civilization,” she said.

“It’s part of a much larger debate about what sort of values do we want to found our society on?”

“This is a value that says do we care for people or do we kill them?”

“We’re always trying to bring someone in who will inspire, educate, motivate and encourage our members,” said Smithers Pro-Life Society board member Rod Taylor.

“Euthanasia and assisted suicide are growing concerns for all of us in Canada, especially in the pro-life movement.”

This week the BC Court of Appeal is set to hear arguments to reverse a earlier decision that the ban on assisted suicide was unconstitutional.

Smithers: A town built by rail

Harry Kruisselbrink has lived in the Bulkley Valley for most of his life and has worked close to the railway for nearly as long.

He has compiled his experience and a large stack of research to make a revised version of a book he released in 2008, Smithers: A Railroad Town.

Kruisselbrink moved from Holland to Barrett, between Houston and Smithers, with his family shortly after the second world war.

Since then he has lived nearly his entire life in Smithers.

In 1955, one of his first jobs was to carry telegrams from the train station to locals and business owners and vice versa.

“When I was hired telegraph was communicated by Morse code,” he said.

“But within about six months teleprinters were brought to the Smithers CN station.”

The new technology made messaging quicker and business was able to expand in the valley.

“In those days we had a direct link with Vancouver,” Kruisselbrink said.

“We transmitted important communication like lumber orders and changes in fuel prices.”

Kruisselbrink was able to advance to communications technician after taking a few electrical and technical courses, the bulk of his work happened at the Smithers railway station.

Despite his long history working and being generally associated with the railway Kruisselbrink found he was entering uncharted territory when he sat down to write his first book.

“I realized my knowledge in the area was woefully inadequate,” he said.

Kruisselbrink continued researching the railway’s effect on Smithers after he spoke at an elder’s college at NWCC. “That was in 2005 and I published the shorter version of this book in 2007.”

The book spans pre-European contact to the present day and tells the story of how the railroad enabled a town to be built and sustained in the shadow of Hudson Bay Mountain.

construction of the railway,” he said.

“It was initially conceived during the construction of the Collins overland telegraph line.”

By Sept. 1866 the telegraph line was operational in what is now known as the Bulkley Valley, named after Col. Charles S. Bulkley, engineer-in-chief of the telegraph project.

The first train passed through Smithers in 1913, but rail traffic was prevented from making it to Prince Rupert until 1914 when the Grand Trunk Pacific railway was completed.

Bringing the House into the electronic age

Congratulations to Mel Coulson who recently received the BC Community Achievement Award.

Mel is presently working with the Seniors Co-Housing Group; their aim is to build a co-housing complex within walking distance of downtown Smithers. Not an easy task. Check out Wolf Willow, Saskatoon, which is the first one of this kind in Canada, many more in the US. Charles Durette has written several books about this type of housing and they are available at the library.

Tradition has it that petitions, pieces of paper demanding action on particular issues, with actual signatures on those papers can be submitted to the government.

MPs in the House of Commons then table these petitions.

An old ritual. Kennedy Stewart, a BC NDP MP would like to change that ritual and bring it into the electronic age.

Mr. Stewart tabled a motion to allow Canadians who are passionate about an issue to sign an online petition demanding action from the federal government. If perhaps 50,000 Canadian citizens back up that petition it could force a House of Commons debate on the issue.

There would be certain criteria and safeguards set into place but the theory behind this is to engage people in the democratic process,

Attended the recent Town Council meeting and was surprised at the number of people sitting and even standing in the hallway. All this in response to a letter to The Interior News from Dennis Groves

regarding concern over the lack of local retail outlets. There was much concern and the atmosphere was tense as people each took a turn to express their concerns.

Some comments were positive, that we were fortunate to live in a beautiful Town, beautiful area. Some comments dealt with the cost of living here, of having to travel to Terrace or Prince George for necessary items. There appeared to be guilt over having to shop on-line. Still more reports of killdeer in this area.

They can find food I am sure if they hang around farmer’s fields.

A reader asked me today if a saw what owl might be attracted to the owl like sound of the collared doves.

I am not sure about that.

A dove might be a bit large for this little owl if it was considering inviting the dove for dinner.

Seems a few more moose around now.

First thing is to make sure the dogs do not get too close.

Talking about moose and spring I would hold off pruning any trees in your yard.

I notice quite often moose pruning away on ornamental trees.

Not sure if they do a good job.

I am still getting calls about sick redpolls.

The calls have come from this region not the northeast.

That is probably because it is colder further north.

Now with damp weather and accumulated rotting seed we see the results of this deadly recipe.

Once more I remind you to clean your feeders with a mild bleach solution.

If possible rake the seed or throw the seed on a clean snowy surface.

Well, at least it has not been raining.

I say that since I am writing this before the big event.

Today in the northwest it was a touch of snow with the sun trying to have a look at this world.

A little colder in the northeast but it does show sunshine on the way.

What more can we ask for?

Well, maybe a bit warmer would be nice.

Last week Alison from Fort Nelson had a red-winged blackbird.

Maybe as sign of Spring Mark called from Fort St. John to say he has one as well.

Why so early he asked me?

Darned if I know.

Blue jays are most often reported from the northeast.

However, this week one was spotted in Houston.

Evelyn tells me the jay has been around for a few months.

Now we can wait and see if a partner arrives.

As I walked my dogs in the field I noticed a northern hawk owl watching us. hawk owls can be approached.

Brothers bring films to Hazelton

The Bourquin brothers, Michael and Ramsay, brought a project they both worked on, Samaqan: Water Stories, to Hazelton.

Samaqan is a series set to begin its third season on APTN which focuses on sharing how water is the binding element for everyone on the planet.

The brothers were born in Hazelton and raised in Iskut, which is now one of the fastest growing towns in the northwest due to mining activity.

The first Samaqan episode Michael narrated was back in their home territory, near the Sacred Headwaters, following his grandfather Loveman Nole as the latter described his many moose hunting escapades.

“He told me that the Sacred Headwaters would be the worst place to develop because of the rivers that are born here,” Michael said.

The second episode, had footage shot by Ramsay, showing a moose getting skinned, packed and jarred.

“A big part of why doing these projects is so rewarding is we had the opportunity to learn from and be with our elders,” Ramsay said.

“I don’t see too many youths working in mining in our home doing that skinning when they have time off.”

relationship with film after their father, Jim Bourquin, wanted to ensure the first blockade of Shell’s coalbed methane project was recorded.

“We were there and had a small handheld camera,” Michael said.

“Monty Bassett was there and he was giving us pointers on how to frame shots and what the best angle would be.

The Samaqan series became a perfect match for the Bourquin brothers.

“We get our environmental side from our dad,” Michael said.

“He was always standing up against industry.

“He received death threats from some Tahltan people for his stance.

“We got the only footage of the blockade, as far as I

know.”

The second set of Samaqan episodes centred around the proposed Taseko Prosperity gold and copper mine west of Williams Lake.

The Samaqan crew filmed an annual meeting of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation on Fish Lake, which is the lake where a tailings pond was originally planned.

Since filming the episode the Prosperity project changed their plans, but were again turned down by a federal panel due to incomplete environmental impact project information.

“Prosperity (mine) would destroy our people and way of life,” Marilyn Baptiste, Xeni Gwet’in chief, said.

The second part of the Chilcotin (Xeni Gwet’in) showed a father and son using a traditional gaffing

method to fish.

Joe Alphonse, chair of the Tsilhqot’in National Government, wonders why Taseko wants to put fish and wildlife in the area at risk for a few dollars.

“The copper and gold has been there all along,” Alphonse said.

“As far as we’re concerned that’s our bank.

“If the technology becomes available where we can get the copper and gold without contaminating the environment we’ll do it.”

The final segment shown in Hazelton involved Hartley Bay and Haisla opposition to the proposed Enbridge bitumen pipeline.

Season three of Samaqan begins this fall on APTN and shooting for the fourth season begins approximately the same time.

Leach brings songs and inspiration to HSS students

George Leach is a blues musician from Sta’atl’imx Nation (Lillooet) who spoke to Hazelton secondary students about his journey before beginning his latest solo tour in Hazelton.

Leach began his musical life during high school, when he found he had too much physical activity.

He wanted balance.

“It was a very practical time management decision,” Leach said, laughing.

“I dropped a physical education class and picked up a music class.

“My dad had a guitar he bought for my brothers and I and it was just laying around, so I thought I’d give it a try.”

Leach began writing immediately and hasn’t let up

since.

One reason he credits for his success, which he shared with students at Hazelton secondary the day of his performance, was simply being himself.

“I don’t really listen to music too often,” Leach admitted.

“I am such a sponge for everything around me that I feel it would change my style.

“From the very beginning I promised myself I would always be myself no matter what.”

Leach noticed other musicians would mimic Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn, which is impressive, but was not as important as finding a sound all his own.

Leach now shares his message willingly, where he used to be reluctant.

“I was aware of my own path and how I did most of my

stuff on my own,” he said.

“I didn’t ever want to say the wrong thing and derail somebody.

“Now, after speaking a few times I’ve found that I have a lot to share.”

Leach isn’t the type of musician to rush a song and he compares his songs to growing a garden.

“I can’t really scream at my songs to get them to grow,” he explained.

“Everyday I get up and nurture my work along without forcing it.”

Strip away the things you say and you’re left with what you do, is the core of Leach’s song Carry Me, which took more than five years to see the light of day.

His new album, Surrender, is an evolution of sorts.

“As a writer this album represents a twelve year transformation,” Leach said.

Lifetime Bulkley Valley resident George Sparkes passed away Feb. 28, 2013. Born in Telkwa May 1, 1928 George loved this valley and never considered living anywhere else. George had an appreciation for the simple things in life; good food, lots of laughs, a great game, his yard, his family and numerous pets over the years. George worked in many professions, including Butter Maker, Coal Miner and Millwright. Able to fix anything, he repaired many an item for anyone needing a hand.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Bernice Sparkes, daughters Stacey Sparkes, Holly Kelly (Don), Amanda Jones (Davey), Danial Keehn, Hayden Kelly, Jillian Kelly and great grandchild Jerzy Jones. George is also survived by his sister Doris DeEllion (Arnold) and extended family members. A Celebration of Life will be arranged for a later date, thus allowing out of town friends and family to attend. We would like to thank Dr. Sheila Smith, the Homecare nurses and support workers who were helpful in our time of need.

A good man, you may be gone, but you’ll not be forgotten.

We will meet again someday. Rest in peace George, we all love you so very much.

Less than one year ago Sofia was delighted to turn 80 years old, celebrating an amazing milestone with family and friends. When she was almost 62 Sofie had suffered a serious heart attack that resulted in early retirement from her kitchen staff job at BVD Hospital and having open heart surgery. She lived the rest of her life with several health complications but with much contentment and a loving heart that was so characteristic of this special lady.

Sofia began her life the fifth of eight children born to Anton and Catharina Konst in Oosterblokker, NH, Netherlands. Her father had a carpentry business and her mother ran a grocery store out of the front of the family home. After graduating Grade 7, Sofie went to homemakers school for two years where she gained wonderful skills that she used so well through the rest of her life. She lived much of her childhood during the occupation of Holland, a time when her father was heavily involved in the Dutch Resistance; her mother died after a prolonged illness in 1949 before Sofie turned 17. The family immigrated to Canada four years later, arriving by ship in Halifax and then travelling by train across the land.

They arrived in Smithers on March 10, 1953 (amazingly, 60 years later to the day, she completed her final journey to her eternal home). One month later Sofia married her sweetheart, Nicholaas DeWit, in a triple marriage which included her sister, Alice, and older brother, John. The DeWit family grew quickly, as on the day of Sofia and Nick’s fourth wedding anniversary they welcomed their third son, Nick Jr, little brother to Tony and Johnny, who were two and three years old. During these years Nick worked in sawmill bush camps, and Sofie loved the rustic life, enjoying the camaraderie with other wives who became her lifelong friends.

A home was built in Smithers, and two more children completed the family, Peter in 1963 and Lynda in 1968. To supplement the family income, Sofia did janitorial work and housekeeping. There was a move to Houston for several years where Nick worked at a mill and she chambermaided at the Pleasant Valley Motel, at one time taking over the managerial position while the owners went on vacation. In 1974, however, Nick was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Much later Sofie told Peter that when she received the news of his father’s illness, she went into her bedroom and let out a deep horrible scream, when that was over, she kneeled and asked Jesus for his help. The family moved back to Smithers to be close to the support and care of relatives.

Sofia got on at BVD Hospital where she worked for 20 years while caring for her husband and family, and becoming a happily devoted grandmother (Oma). She was known for her prolific knitting and crocheting that kept all the family warm with sweaters, toques, mitts, and afghans, as well, she did fine handwork including embroidery, needlepoint and lace doilies. Eventually Nick had to be hospitalized and later he was a resident at the Bulkley Lodge. The dedication and care that Sofie showed through all those years until his death in 2001 was a beautiful testament to our family and the community of unselfish commitment and love.

Sofie leaves her five children, each one so dear to her, and their families, including 15 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren; sisters Agnes Derksen and Tina Konst; brother Jos Konst and sister-in-law, Vera; and many nieces and nephews. She loved us all so well!

Goodbye Mom, Oma, Sister, Auntie, Friend . . . until we meet again, we’ll miss you!

T HREE R IVERS R EPORT Team raising money for cancer

The Great Northern Peaks are travelling to Richmond next month for the Bust a Move event after raising money for breast cancer research.

The event consists of six one-hour fitness sessions in a row and the GNP crew is still preparing for the grueling marathon event at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Apr. 13.

“Both of us are running five days a week,” Laura Roe said.

“Plus local fitness classes and videos at home.”

Within six hours the GNP and other teams will complete hour-long sessions in Yoga, Hip Hop, Zumba, Tabata, Bollywood and a Bootcamp.

All sessions are led by professional trainers and as the event nears the GNP team is getting a bit anxious.

“We’re excited and a bit scared,” Judith Hobenshield said.

“Once we get there the goal is to survive.”

“We’re gonna be awesome,” Roe said.

Roe, Hobenshield and Denise Marshall, who lives in Prince George have raised nearly $5,000, which places Roe and Hobenshield tied for fifth on the fundraising leader board.

The GNP crew sold T-shirts, popcorn and pies and raffled off a quilt made by Hobenshield.

Now they’re offering something new to sponsors.

put names on our T-shirts,” Roe said, adding that both names in memoriam and business sponsors are welcome.

Both Hobenshield and Roe have family members who developed cancer.

Roe’s mother is a survivor and Hobenshield has had several family members succumb to the disease.

“I’m doing this event in remembrance of the ladies that we have lost and to honor my two beautiful aunts who battled and won,” Hobenshield said.

“I have faith that one day all the females in my family will no longer fear breast cancer because it will be a disease of the past.”

All proceeds donated to the GNP team go to the Canadian Cancer Agency to fund research.

The Bulkley Valley Credit Union, where both Roe and Hobenshield work, is collecting donations in an account named Great Northern Peaks.

The GNP team has had great community support to reach their original goal of $4,000, but the new goal is $6,000.

“We’re overachievers so we don’t intend to stop,” Roe said.

Fulton Avenue Watermain Replacement Contract # 2013-13

Tenders for the “Fulton Avenue Watermain Replacement - Contract #2013-13” will be received by the Town of Smithers up to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013.

The general scope of work for this contract is to replace approximately 230m of 200mm diameter existing watermain and related appurtenances along the Fulton Avenue right-of-way between Nineteenth Avenue and Victoria Drive.

Tender documents are available at the Town Office for a non-refundable charge of $50.00, or electronically on the Town’s website or BC Bid at no charge but with the requirement to register. A pre-tender site meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. on April 3, 2013. The meeting is non-mandatory, but all interested contractors are encouraged to attend.

All Tenders must be submitted to the Director of Development Services in an envelope, sealed and clearly marked “TENDER – Fulton Avenue Watermain Replacement - Contract #2013-13”. Bidders shall sign the Declaration and attach it to the outside of the envelope.

Tenders shall be accompanied by a security in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the Total Tender Price payable to the Town of Smithers.
