If early feedback is any indication, the Revelstoke School District’s plans for the old Big Eddy Elementary site should be met with little local opposition.

The district showcased plans to re-zone the school site to low-density residential from institutional and then sub-divide the property into seven half-acre lots at an open house at the Columbia Forest District Office Wednesday evening.

“Without exception people are thrilled to hear we’re proposing single family lots,” said associatesuperintendent Anne Cooper, who is handling the disposition of the old school sites.

Just to be sure, I looked through the seven comment forms submitted by the time of my visit a little after 5:30 p.m. They were all from Big Eddy residents and all were in favour of the school boards plans.

“We like the proposed residential R2A,” wrote one person. “The size of the lots seem to be in accordance with our property.”

Others expressed satisfaction it wouldn’t be sold to a developer or be re-zoned for industrial use.

The school district is required to earn $2.4 million from the sale of Big Eddy, Mountain View and Mount Begbie Elementary schools.

and maps showing the land-use outlined in the Official Community Plan as well as the current zoning.

The OCP shows the land-use is set out for duplex-residential and the zoning of the surrounding area is R2A, low-density residential.

“What we’re trying to accomplish in terms of Big Eddy redevelopment is to be fully in compliance and consistent with the Official Community Plan,” said Cooper.

“We’re saying we’re going to be consistent with how its already planned in the OCP, which people seem very pleased about.”

The district is in the process of working with the city on the re-zoning application. The plan to subdivide the lots is contingent on the school being demolished. A contract to do the work has gone out to tender and the cost should be known by mid-April, said Cooper.

What happens if the building can’t be demolished? “Who knows?” replied Cooper.

“Until we know a firm price to demolish it we can’t say that we are,” she said. We have to take into account a wise division of how we’re going to net proceeds.”

If all goes forward as planned, the district hopes to have the lots on the market in July.

Once the re-zoning for Big Eddy Elementary is complete, the school district will start looking at Mountain View. “It will be significantly more complicated,” said Cooper.

Prisoner injury investigation fizzles without complaint Wild chase, escape attempt led to investigation that trailed off with jurisdictional confusion AARON ORLANDO

Fourteen months after a prisoner of the Revelstoke RCMP was injured either while being arrested, while in custody, or during an escape attempt, the official investigation has trailed off without a definitive conclusion or report.

The injury dates back to Jan. 14, 2012. John Robert Murrell, then about 37, sped away from RCMP in Golden, B.C. when they tried to stop his vehicle for erratic driving. After a chase in which Murrell got away a couple of times, a spike belt was used to stop the vehicle near Revelstoke and Murrell was arrested.

He was taken to Queen Victoria Hospital to be checked for injuries sustained during the arrest, including an X-ray, before he was locked up at the Revelstoke RCMP detachment.

Later in the day, hospital staff asked to see Murrell again. It was while leaving the hospital after this second attempt that Murrell made a break for it, jumping down the big embankment outside of the Queen Victoria Hospital emergency department.

During the escape attempt, a Revelstoke RCMP officer suffered a broken shoulder.

Because Murrell suffered an in-custody injury, police procedure required an investigation by an outside department, and the case was referred to the West Vancouver Police Department.

The Times Review followed up with that Lower Mainland detachment, but was eventually told the case had been sent to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC).

an interview with the Times Review last week, Woods cited confusion with the case, saying the OPCC didn’t have jurisdiction over the incident.

Woods said the OPCC didn’t receive an official complaint about the incident, and said they weren’t investigating the file.

“I don’t expect it is going to go anywhere,” Woods said. “There’s no reason for us to look at it anymore.”

However, Woods did say he’d do one last check later this week to confirm his belief.

The investigation was characterized by jurisdictional confusion from the start. The B.C. RCMP media centre issued a press release two days after the arrest, announcing an investiga-

tion by the West Vancouver Police Department.

However, spokespersons from both organizations initially referred media calls to the other.

The Revelstoke RCMP also said they couldn’t comment.

Following a 14-month investigation, it seems there will be no information forthcoming explaining where, why or how Murrell was injured during the arrest.

John Robert Murrell’s injuries while in custody didn’t attract any public outcry, possibly due to his history of extremely dangerous attempts to evade capture that would make injury to anyone involved a very possible outcome.

Murrell had racked up over 30 criminal convictions when he led Kamloops RCMP on a lengthy high speed chase in September of 2008. After he crashed his pickup truck, he fled on foot and was eventually subdued by a police dog.

Later in December of that year, Kamloops RCMP alleged Murrell was the driver of a Jeep Cherokee that rammed an RCMP cruiser during a police chase.

On April 24, 2012, Murrell was sentenced for several charges relating to the Revelstoke incident, including breach of probation, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, escape from lawful custody, assault with intent to resist arrest and wilfully obstructing a peace officer.

He received several one-year terms for the offences, and a four-year term for the charge of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He also received a lifetime driving ban. He was sentenced in court in Salmon Arm.

Regional resource think tank to open shop in Revelstoke AARON ORLANDO

The Columbia Mountains Resource Policy Council is aiming to open an office space in Revelstoke in the coming months. The new organization is a hybrid advocacy and policy organization that explores resource management issues in the Canadian Columbia Basin region. “Essentially we’re aiming at a research institute/think-tank that considers natural resource management at a landscape level in the Columbia Mountains,” said Federico Osorio, one of several founding members.

“The idea is to try to get a better feeling of where we are at in terms of achieving meaningful sustainability. For that, the first thing to define is what is sustainability within the framework of a landscape,” he said. “How much can our ecosystems give? How much can we take from them?”

The group received a $10,000 award through the Columbia Basin Trust to establish their legal framework. They plan a web presence, including publications, as well as lots of in-the-flesh involvement in regional issues.

Osirio explained the group sought to fill a void created by a lack of sustainable resource planning at the provincial level, and by jurisdictional issues that mean the region’s resources aren’t managed holistically.

They aim to advance policy ideas to decisionmakers and get involved in mediation and moderation on controversial issues.

He cited controveries such as mountain caribou conservation and the recent Begbie Bench logging as examples of situations where all parties would benefit from knowledgable moderation provided by the CMRPC. “There isn’t a conversation that we feel that there should be,” Osorio said.

B.C. forests minister shelves area-based tenure change

A proposed change to forest legislation in B.C. that would allow companies to convert volume-based forest licences into area-based licences has been shelved following criticism.

Critics said the ‘Bill 8’ changes amounted to a big giveaway of public land to private companies, that the changes were unclear, lacked adequate public process, and were ill-timed ahead of a May general election. Environmental groups also expressed deep concern about the proposed amendments.

On Mar. 12, the B.C. Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson issued a statement announcing the changes would be shelved until the summer – after the election – to allow for more public process.

“In response to the 2012 Special Committee on Timber Supply’s report and to improve forest stewardship and support community resiliency, we proposed amendments to the Forest Act that would enable the conversion of volume-based forest licences to area-based forest licences,” he said.

“This is an important piece of public policy, however, it has become clear to me that greater public engagement is needed before legislative amendments can proceed. We will therefore be initiating a process of broader public consultation this summer based on the recommendations of the special committee and the proposed legislation,” Thomson said in a statement.

The minister said the changes were proposed to help mills impacted by the pine beetle infestation that were struggling with timber supply.

Opposition forests critic Norm Macdonald welcomed the announcement, saying he was “pleased” that the forest minister heeded opponents of the changes.

Macdonald was a member of the Special Committee on Timber Supply.

“I had a long conversation with the minister about these proposals and raised my concerns,” said Macdonald, the MLA for Columbia River–Revelstoke. “The proposed changes were deeply prob-

lematic, and went in exactly the wrong direction. They threatened public control over B.C.’s landbase and risked hard-won environmental standards.”

Macdonald criticized the act, saying it would give great discretionary powers to the forest minister, and would grant corporations new, strong private property rights over public lands.

“This is a time of tremendous challenge for the forest industry.

It is also a time where we could find real opportunities,” Macdonald said. “But we will only maximize these opportunities if we all work together to make the best decisions.”

A constituency worker at Macdonald’s office said the office received over 3,000 emails opposing the amendments.

Police are on the lookout for a man who grabbed a purse from a shopping cart at Cooper’s Foods on Saturday, Mar. 9 at around 2 p.m.

Revelstoke RCMP reviewed video surveillance from the store, which showed the man leaving with the distinctive green floral purse in hand.

He is described as a Caucasian male in his mid to late twenties with a shaved head and a goatee. He was wearing blue jeans, dark shoes and a black hoodie with the large, white numbers ‘686’ on the front. 686 is a snowboard clothing brand.

Police say the man was with a Caucasian female in her twenties. She had long, dark hair, checkered pyjama pants and a dark winter jacket with a hood.

They left in what police think was a newer Ford Focus, headed towards Golden, B.C. on the Trans-Canada.

Saber-wielding robber tracked down and arrested Alex Cooper

A woman was tracked down and arrested after a robbery at the Big Eddy Market last Tuesday morning.

Police said a woman brandishing a saber entered the store and robbed the lone employee of the proceeds from the cash register on Mar. 12.

As she left, the employee gave chase while a customer called the police. Someone else took up the chase until police eventually arrived and took over. They pursued the woman until she attempted to hide inside a home.

Police secured the residence and arrested the woman. The stolen money and saber were recovered.

Vince Sessa, the owner of the Big

Eddy Market, said the woman was covered up to conceal her identity and was carrying a fairly large sword. “It was enough to hurt somebody,” he said.

He said it was a scary situation and he was glad nobody got hurt. The amount taken was a few hundred dollars.

“I wasn’t worried about the money,” he said.

No one was injured during the incident and the RCMP thanked those who helped track the woman until police arrived. Victim Services is working those involved.

A 32-year-old is now being held in custody until she appears in court. She is being charged with uttering threats, robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Reports: Walmart breaking ground in Salmon Arm Retail giant moving closer to Revelstoke retail sector with new location after controversial SmartCentre development gets underway Martha Wickett Salmon Arm Observer

One thing led to another last week as SmartCentres fulfilled its quest to begin building a shopping centre at the west end of Salmon Arm. On Tuesday, March 5, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure signed off on a development permit for the shopping centre. Such a permit guides the “form and character” of a development.

Later that day, the City of Salmon Arm was notified of the approval.

On Thursday, both a development permit and a building permit were issued to SmartCentres by the city.

On Thursday afternoon, Smart-

Centres replied to a request from the Observer with regard to the corporation’s plans.

“SmartCentres will begin the first phase of construction including the widening of Highway 1, the development of an internal frontage road in addition to the first store,” said Sandra Kaiser, vice-president of corporate affairs for SmartCentres. “Construction is scheduled to begin immediately and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

Construction contracts have been awarded to Norson Construction Ltd. for the work on the site and BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. for the offsites.”

Norson Construction Ltd. has offices in Kelowna while BA Daw-

son Blacktop Ltd. is based in Kamloops. According to Norson’s website, it was established in 1983 and offers general contracting, construction management and design build services throughout western Canada, serving its clients through offices in Vancouver, Kelowna and Edmonton.

BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd.’s website explains the company was established in 1969 and has been serving the concrete and asphalt needs of the Kamloops area for nearly 40 years. It states the company is an expert in the installation of all types of paving materials.

Asked about involvement of Salmon Arm trades, Kaiser said any subcontractors interested in working on the site should contact the contractors directly.

Although SmartCentres would say only that the anchor tenant will be announced in the next few weeks, tender documents circulated in the fall referred to a Walmart.

reported that the floor plan includes a grocery section with a deli and bakery area, as well as poultry and produce coolers, grocery aisles and grocery sales.

The store also included a medical/pharmacy-type centre, and a photo centre.

Initial perusal of the plans showed neither an automotive centre nor a fast-food facility, as some Walmarts include.

The building permit is for the largest building on the development plan at 96,857 sq.ft.

Kevin Pearson, the city’s director of development services, says the development cost charges of approximately $320,000 have been paid, and the company will be spending about $600,000 on landscaping.

An amended development permit was approved by city council on Oct. 24, 2011.

One of the issues that MOTI had been focusing on in the fall prior to issuing its approval of the Smart-

Centres development permit last week was ensuring there was a sufficient buffer between the proposed structure and the Trans-Canada Highway to accommodate highway maintenance, such as snow-plowing.

The ministry notes that its approval is limited to considering issues related to the safety and operation of the highway.

Asked about reasons for the lengthy approval process, MOTI stated in an email to the Observer yesterday that the ministry was responsible for the timeline.

It stated that upon receiving the development permit from the city, the ministry undertook a technical review which included a consultation process.

“The ministry was responsible for the process and the timeline associated with the review.”

The site, the former Petty’s Meats property, sits on the north side of the highway bordering 30th Street SW.

The B.C. Ministry of Justice has issued an unusual warning against unprepared ‘slackcountry’ skiing.

A Mar. 12 media release defines slackcountry as lift-accessed backcountry skiing, warning those who duck the ropes that they are essentially backcountry skiing and should be prepared.

“It is important that those who ven-

ture out-of-bounds take all the necessary precautions and that all recreation enthusiasts who choose to do so recognize they are taking some measure of personal risk,” states the ministry.

B.C. Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond underscored the potential dangers involved in a warning targeted at spring breakers heading for the slopes: “It should not be called slackcountry. It is backcountry and it can be dangerous. This spring break, we are urging skiers and

snowboarders not to go out of bounds – it can be incredibly hazardous and it is simply not worth the risk. I also want to encourage everyone to make sure that they are aware of the dangers that come with ducking the rope. This is especially important for parents to discuss with their children.”

She was joined by Revelstokebased acting Executive Director for the Canadian Avalanche Centre Karl Klassen, who called for caution and preparedness: “Crossing a boundary rope is a big decision. Once you’re outside the ski area boundaries you’re in the backcountry and you need to be able to take care of yourself and your

A fatal Feb. 22 avalanche outside the boundary rope at Revelstoke Mountain Resort occurred after a group of skiers ducked the rope into an uncontrolled area and were swept down the hill in an avalanche.

In the tradition of my home city, Calgary, I say ‘Howdy’ to the people of Revelstoke. Yes Revelstoke, an invasion of your city is underway from Alberta, and not just from the skiers and snowmobilers.

I am a currently a student at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in the Journalism Arts program and part of our curriculum was to find a newspaper to offer our services to, for a month, to gain practical work experience.

SAIT calls it a ‘practicum’ but most people will recognize the other, more familiar term, an internship.

Why Revelstoke?

In my historic dealings with picturesque Revelstoke, I chose to be a part of your city in this fashion because I could not think of a better place for a writer to be a writer.

Because you see, I have been here many times before throughout my life, and not just to pass through.

As a child, my family came to the Revelstoke area, to visit the Loop Brook campground.

I am delighted to see it still there, as we had many a memorable time there taking in the trails, roasting marshmallows on our campfires and reveling in our close encounters with grizzly bears.

We came into your refreshing city to explore the streets, enjoy the local eateries, and relax in its warm, small-town atmosphere.

Why Journalism for Carl?

For many years, I have worked in the Foothills Industrial Park in Calgary as a warehouse worker, going from job to job, without any real sense of purpose, simply working to live, so-to-speak.

It was a very boring and uneventful period in my life, which I have dubbed the ‘Dark Ages’.

But soon, that all changed dramatically.

In January of 2010 at the age of 34, I had a myocardial infarction, also known

as a heart attack.

A frightful experience indeed and as I think of the psychological trauma that it caused, I fight to steal myself away from the memory.

It felt like someone was inside of my chest pushing outward with their thumb, and that thumb, felt like it had been heated to about 1000 degrees and the pain became worse and worse, with every heartbeat.

Near-death experiences will change a person, to the point where they question their direction in life and whether or not it’s justified or wasteful.

I decided my path in life was wasteful.

So I changed that direction to pursue the life of a writer and journalist, something that I have always thought of doing but never had the courage.

Enter Superman I suppose the other motivation for that choice came in the summer of 1979, at the tender age of four, when I saw the movie Superman.

I mean the first Superman movie, with Christopher Reeve.

As a boy, I looked up to Superman, but I was searching for a way that I could emulate him, and of course since flying around and lifting impossibly heavy objects was out, I found a more down-to-earth solution.

In his off-hours, he was a journalist.

That left an indelible impression on me, and since then I have always associated journalists with being the goodguys, the ones who bring to light those voices that might be left in the dark.

They’re idealists, as it were, who don’t compromise the victim, and the one who will be a royal pain on the public stage until the issue they have, has been resolved.

They fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

Pretty grandiose right? Perhaps.

Part seven of an ongoing column and story series exploring the Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild maternity penning plan. n iconic Canadian species, caribou have been featured on the 25-cent coin since 1937 and can be found in the pocket change of Canadians from coast to coast. In the wild, however, Canada’s Southern Mountain caribou are disappearing at an alarming rate and are listed as a Threatened Species under the Species at Risk Act. As a world leader in conservation, Parks Canada is taking action to try and save this species before it is too late.

Caribou can still be found locally in the Columbia South herd, having a home range that overlaps with portions of Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks. Population numbers of the Columbia South herd have plummeted in recent years, from 120 animals in 1994 to only seven as of 2011. In the adjacent North Columbia herd, population numbers have dropped from 209 animals to an estimated 123 in the same timeframe.

Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks are too small to support caribou herds on their own and Parks Canada has been working with

partners on the regional landscape for over 15 years to help address the causes of this dramatic decline.

Parks Canada is committed to working with provincial governments, First Nations, environmentalists, industry, recreationists and academics towards regional caribou conservation and is exploring options to protect this iconic species.

In Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks, Parks Canada is working with the Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild Society (RCRW) to help improve mountain caribou calf survival in the regional ecosystem through maternity penning.

The RCRW project will involve securing pregnant females from the North Columbia herd in a pen close to their natural calving site until they have given birth and the calves are at least two weeks old. This protects mother caribou and their calves from predators such as bears, cougars, wolverines, golden eagles and wolves while they are at their most vulnerable, helping to recover the herd to a sustainable size.

Parks Canada is supporting this initiative through a commitment of financial and in-kind resources, providing $20,000 in funding for the first year to assist with purchasing equipment. Future funding efforts will focus on training First Nations shepherds to play a key role in caring for the penned caribou and hazing predators away from the site.

The overall goal of the project is to improve the chances of this species’ survival, not only in the national parks but in the greater ecosystem.

Each landscape and caribou herd faces a variety of unique challenges.

In order to see positive change, a variety of tools need to be applied in varying combinations, dependent

on the circumstance. For example, maternity penning can work well in areas such as Revelstoke where calf survival rates are low, but it is unlikely to address mortality issues in adult caribou and the issues that led to the original decline of mountain caribou.

Since 2004, Parks Canada, the Province of British Columbia and several forestry companies in the Revelstoke area have been working in partnership to regionally map key caribou habitat and implement land management actions that help conserve caribou and this important habitat. Based on these maps and research conducted by Parks Canada, important winter caribou habitat in Mount Revelstoke National Park has been secured through the implementation of a seasonal winter closure on the slopes of Mount Klotz since 2007.

In addition, in 2010, Parks Canada announced $4.5 million in Action on the Ground funding over a five-year period to help develop and implement key management actions to improve the status of Southern Mountain caribou and their habitat in the national parks.

In 2011, Parks Canada released a draft Conservation Strategy for Southern Mountain Caribou in Canada’s National Parks. This strategy is exploring all facets that have led to the continued decline of Southern Mountain caribou and actions that could help to recover them throughout the mountain parks. These actions include identifying important caribou habitat, implementing seasonal trail and area closures and identifying potential long-term recovery actions, including maternity penning and captive breeding where appropriate.

Efforts to stabilize the North

Columbia herd at a sustainable 250 animals will help provide natural herd dispersal and create the opportunity for animals from the North Columbia herd to augment the Columbia South herd. These actions combined with the continued collaboration between the RCRW, First Nations, stakeholders and the local community will help to recover regional Southern Mountain caribou populations. There is no better time to act than now.

Sarah Boyle is the Parks Canada liason for the RCRW project. Sarah moved to Revelstoke in 2009 from the East Kootenays to work as an ecologist for Parks Canada. She has a Masters of Science in Environmental Management from Royal Roads University, and has been a registered professional biologist in Alberta since 2002. Sarah has worked internationally in both the United States and South America with not-for profit agencies, has worked in the Alberta oil and gas industry as an environmental adviser and environmental compliance auditor. In 2004 Sarah started her career with Parks Canada in the polar bear capital of the world – Churchill Manitoba, and has since made her way south to snowy, but much warmer, Revelstoke. *** The Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild project is competing for $100,000 in funding through the Shell Fuelling Change program. Tsunami relief effort celebrated

Revelstoke resident Tomoaki Fujimura has just returned from a trip to Japan, where he visited parts of Miyagi Prefecture ravaged by the March, 2011 tsunami disaster.

Fujimura provided an update on a donation of $1,200 collected from Revelstoke residents at the Revelstoke Farm & Craft Market following the disaster.

Fujimura’s acquaintances in the ski and snowboard industry in Tokyo organized a fundraiser called ‘What Can We Do’ which sold T-shirts and prints to raise money. Including the $1,200 donation from Revelstoke, the event pulled in $40,000.

It was donated to three organizations: — The Ashinaga organization, which provides emotional support to orphans.

— Open Japan, which helps survivors of natural disasters.

— Earth Children, which supports child

In a letter in Japanese, the organizers reached out to Revelstoke residents.

“Thank you very much for all donations and everyone’s contributions to be a part of our charity event,”

they wrote. “By selling our photographs and T-shirts, we raised 3,277,621 [Yen].”

While in Miyagi Prefecture, Fujimura and Revelstoke photographer Bruno Long travelled to the tsunamiravaged town of Ishinomaki.

Fujimura was touched

by the story of the students of Okawa elementary school, where 74 out of 108 students died when they were swept away in the raging waters.

Fujimura hopes donations will help young survivors of this and other tragedies.

evelstoke specialty sawmill Take to Heart was honoured with a special mention at the 2013 Wood WORKS! BC Wood Design Awards earlier this month. Owner Keith Starling noted they were up against serious competition – many of the recipients were honoured for large public or private buildings.

Starling’s Westside Road mill won for their work building the Pallas Residence in Revelstoke. The panel cited Take to Heart and the home, “as an exemplary example of a truly green building. Constructed of solidwood-wall panels and assembled with wood screws, the result is a highly-efficient building with little impact to the environment.”

I had the privilege of touring the mill last week where I learned about the process to create the post and beam timber-framed home.

Starling explained the unique solid-wood walls are a sandwich of three cross-laminated layers of Douglas fir held together using wooden screws that go most of the way through the wall. The result is an interior wall with a tongue and groove look without any visible fasteners. On the outside, the wall is finished with a special wood-based insulation, paper wrap and shingles, allowing enhanced breathe-ability for the building.

The resulting toxin-free frame creates a breathable, energy efficient home.

Much of the home was pre-fabricated at Take to Heart, drastically cutting the construction time and reducing costs. Starling said the home is competitive with traditional stick frames.

Back at the mill, Starling is exploring ways to refine the process and market the product – and he’s received lots of interest since the awards gala in Vancouver. He envisions it as an alternative to log home construction – an industry he’s experienced in; the mill owner started out manually stripping logs for log homes when he was in grade 8.

I’ll share more about Take to Heart in an upcoming series in the Times Review exploring the local forest industry that should start in a few weeks.

It’s surprisingly difficult to find information about Sam Masterton. There’s a few live videos online, a Myspace page and a short profile on the website for the Siegel Entertainment talent agency.

One of the few descriptions I found of the Calgary-based slide guitar player called him a soul-searching roughneck who put a twist on country gospel.

That was enough to have me intrigued.

Masterton is coming to Revelstoke this week for two shows. On Friday, he’s at the Last Drop playing with The Sons of Bitumen, a band he’s put together for the occasion.

On Saturday, he’s the featured performer at the Revelstoke Coffee House along with Sara Jane Scouten.

Masterton grew up playing gospel and contemporary Christian music in church.

When he was 16 he heard a Ben Harper album that changed his music direction. He took up slide guitar and started writing his own music. He even builds slide guitars for himself and others.

“It’s the closest thing I can find to a human voice,” he said.

“It’s unique in the sense you’re not using any frets ... You can really emulate a vocal line through the instrument.

“I love that quality about – that you can make it sing in its own unique way.”

When I asked Masterton to describe his sound, he struggled to pin it down. Terms like blues, rock and folk came out.

He invoked artists like Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, JJ Cale, the Moody Blues and Kelly Joe Phelps.

“I’m not Bob Seeger, sitting up there with my nylon string acoustic and singing songs about the trees,” he said. “It’s acoustic music with an edge.

In the 15 years since he’s played both solo and as a musician in numerous bands, most notably Run GMC (now Washboard Union), has accompanied the likes of Tim Buckley, and opened for a number of well-known performers.

“I was just a hired gun for years-and-years. I’ve probably played on 40 albums,” he told me, saying he would often open for the bands he toured with – playing a solo set before settling in as a sideman.

Masterton played professionally for years before giving up that life and settling down a little bit. He called me while on break from a construction job. He said he had discussions about signing with Universal, and got offered six figures to record an album, but in the end

decided to remain independent.

“It’s not for me,” he said about signing with a major label. “It’s a lot more work to do it by yourself but you have more control of what you put out there.”

Masterton is coming to Revelstoke with a few friends. On Friday, Jeff Birch will open the show at the Last Drop with a solo electric show that Masterton described as “Led Zeppelin meets Phish. Epic ballads and heavy guitar. I wouldn’t say high energy, but I would say intense stuff.”

When Masterton hits the stage he’ll be joined by the Sons of Bitumen – a band he’s put together that includes Denis Severino and Jacob Verburg from Revelstoke’s Stuck on Honey, and Sarah Jane Scouten. Together they’ll play some classic country, some

bluegrass, some roots music, with a mix of covers and originals.

“There will be three-part harmonies and wild instrumentals,” he said. “I’m really fortunate to be playing with really skilled players.”

On Saturday at the Coffee House, Masterton will be joined

by Scouten, a singer-songwriter with a beautiful voice and a suitcase full of stringed instruments. “She’s incredible.

How would I describe her?” said Masterton. “Loretta Lynn meets the Be Good Tanyas all in one person.”

The satisfaction of making violins

When Robert Quade isn’t driving trains or out in the mountains, he’s at home making hand-crafted violins

To graduate from the Violin Making School of America requires three years of study during which students make seven violins and

one cello. To graduate, your work is played and tested. It was during this final test that Robert Quade had one of his biggest thrills.

As he tells it, the principal violinist for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was at the school shop-

ping for violins. He came over to the classroom and asked if he could try out Quade’s violin.

“I had a huge grin on my face and said go for it,” Quade told me.

“He picked it up and started playing a famous Bach piece. That was a

pretty special moment.”

What did he say? I asked.

“He looked at me, he smiled, gave a nice nod, and said, ‘Excellent.’”

Quade had a big grin on his face as he told me the story. The way he spoke of the moment, it felt like he was describing a sensation many would get if Wayne Gretzky showed up to your street hockey game and called you a pretty good player. It’s that excitement and awe you feel when someone at the top of their field compliments you on your work.

Quade, 29, drives trains for CP Rail and spends his time out of work in the mountains. When he’s not partaking in work or play, he makes violins.

He grew up in Calgary the son of a violin bow maker, and Quade said he was jealous of his father’s career and the lifestyle it afforded him.

“He would sit down and make something and take pride in making it, then he’d sell it somebody and whoever bought it would love it,” Quade said.

Instead, he went to Salt Lake City to attend the Violin Making School of America.

A single violin takes anywhere from 6-8 weeks for Quade to make.

It requires meticulous attention to detail, near-perfect woodworking, and practically flawless work. Any small defect – be it a tiny crack or knot in the wood, results in a piece getting thrown out.

“I try to work without ever using the phrase good enough,” he said.

“It’s always how can this be better or do I finally have this perfect.”

I met Quade at his apartment, which also doubles as his workshop. He had one finished violin to show me and one that was a workin-progress.

The model Quade showed me was a Stradivari – from the famous violin maker Antonio Stradivari.

“It’s the most common model for makers to follow,” said Quade. “He was a prolific and accomplished maker. He got it right 300 years ago.”

U18 skiers reach podium at Grouse slalom MARY CLAYTON

The Revelstoke Ski Club sent four racers to Grouse Mountain over the weekend of Mar. 16-17, to participate in a FIS Slalom. Dominic Unterberger, Emily Unterberger and Jamie Park posted some impressive results in a competition with skiers from Canada and the US. On Saturday, Dominic was in first place after the first run but a mistake on the second run cost him the gold. Dominic ended the day with a silver medal, still an impressive result. His sister Emily skied strongly as well,

with a fifth place finish.

On Sunday, Emily finished fourth overall, ending up third in the U18 category. Jamie Park finished fifth overall and was fourth in the U 18.

The weather conditions made for a challenging course, said coach Milan Arsovic. “The snow wasn’t the best and any little mistake had big consequences. But they learned from the mistakes of the first day and the next day was revenge time.”

“This weekend was challenging,” said Jamie Park. “The visibility was poor on Saturday and small mistakes in the fog resulted in me not finishing the race. But

on Sunday I skied well, so it’s a good step in the right direction.

I’m happy to finish fifth.”

Her team mate Emily Unterberger had a similar perspective.

“From a technical point of view the weekend was a little disappointing for me but I managed to recover the second day and I’m happy to finally have had my first U18 podium.”

“I’m glad to see that our athletes are finishing in the top five for their age group in western Canada,” added Milan Arsovic. “Their form is only going to improve, and I hope the best is still to come.”

The world of cross-country sitskiing is a small one. At the 2012 Canadian championships, only four women competed and at the 2013 World Championships in Sochi, Russia, there was 14 racers in the field.

For Revelstoke’s Emily Suchy, this has meant there has been almost no opportunities to race against other sit skiers. Aside from a practice race against fellow sit-skiers from across Canada at a training camp in Canmore, Alta., earlier this winter, she’s been either racing only against the clock, or against able-bodied girls who are a few years younger than her.

“It’s been kind of sad because I haven’t had a lot of competition,” said the 15-year-old. “Even at the BC Winter Games I didn’t have anyone to race against, so I’d like to have more people into it.”

This week, when Suchy attends the Haywood Ski Nationals at the Callaghan Valley Nordic Centre from Mar. 23-30, she will

get her first chance to really test herself against other sit skiers in a race environment.

“My big goal is to beat Colette but I’m not sure how realistic that is at this point,” she said, referring to six-time Paralympian Colette Bourgonje. “I’m not really sure how I stand next to her because this is the first time I’ve really raced against her. I don’t really know what my goal towards her is but I’m hoping to have good technique and just don’t leave anything on the course.”

Suchy has Perthes Syndrome, which limits the mobility in her hips. While she can walk, she can only do so for short distances, meaning normal cross-country skiing isn’t possible for her. In 2010, she attended a Nordic camp in Canmore, where she introduced to sit-skiing. There, she met Bourgonje, and tried out her first sit-ski.

Last winter, Suchy became the first Nordic sit-skier to race at the BC Winter Games. This winter she’s been racing against the Midget girls, where she finished fourth and fifth at Okanagan Cup

races at Larch Hills and Sovereign Lakes respectively. She trains with teammates her age, which forces her to really push herself to keep up to them.

“It helps a lot that I train with them because if I didn’t I wouldn’t push myself as hard in training,” she said. “Just trying to keep up to them, it’s really great to know what it feels like to be training. They know how it feels to be an athlete.”

To get to the Nationals she’s received funding from Live It! Love It! and she received new skis courtesy Revelstoke Adaptive Snow Sports. She had a custom sit-ski built for her by Trent Kappler.

Suchy said her ultimate goal is to compete in the Paralympics. For now, she appreciates the sport as a winter activity that gets her outside with her friends and teammates.

“I really like pushing myself to try harder and just achieve the best I can,” she said. “This is a great thing for me to do and stay healthy.”

Who else is representing Revelstoke at the nationals?

Emily Suchy will be one of seven Revelstokians at the Haywood Ski Nationals at the Callaghan Valley near Whistler, B.C., next week. Sisters Brittany and Megan Evans, who we’ve written about in the past, will be looking to assert themselves as two of the top young skiers in Canada.

Three local youth will be making their first trips to the nationals. Matt Smider, the head coach of the Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club provided these bios: Gordon Mason, 16, will be competing as a Junior Boy in his first Ski Nationals next week. A strong classic skier, Gordon is expecting to post his top results in the 1.2 kilometre classic sprints and the 7.5 kilometre classic interval start. Excited to com-

pete at a high level event, Gordon hopes the experience will provide motivation to continue training and work harder in seasons to come.

Tayla Koerber, 15, will also be competing in her first Ski Nationals as a Juvenile Girl. With this season’s most notable results coming in distance classic races (fourth at BC Cup; first at Okanagan Cup), she is looking forward to the five kilometre classic interval start. Tayla has shown great dedication towards her training and hopes her commitment will pay off as she aims for a top 20 placing. Tayla would like to thank her sponsor Flowt Bikes and Skis.

Daniel Blackie, 14, the youngest member of the RNSC heading to Nationals, will be compet-

ing as a Juvenile Boy in his inaugural Ski Nationals. With his quick tempo, Daniel is looking forward to the fun and exciting sprint relay (with Gordon Mason) and the fast, furious and unpredictable classic sprints, where he hopes to make the qualification round with a top 30 placing.

Bronte Viznaugh, 17, will be competing in her second Ski Nationals, having previously raced in Canmore in 2011). Having focused her training all season on the event, Bronte is looking forward to the five kilometre freestyle interval start; her preferred technique and strongest discipline. Bronte will also be teaming up with Tayla Koerber to race the two-person, 6 x 700m sprint relay.

Acrobats finish third in team event at provincials Chamber explores municipal taxation issue Jef Kline

Revelstoke Acrobats Club

The Revelstoke Acrobats attended the B.C. Provincial Championships last weekend. They had 17 athletes competing in this event. For Veronica Cadden, Julia McKenzie and Summer Novakowski it was their first competition ever.

At this big meets nerves and the ability to focus were a factor, but the coaches were very proud of their performances.

The athletes really stepped it up this weekend, competing new passes and routines. We had a six-year-old completing somersaults, an 11-yearold doing double flips, an athlete doing multiple double somersaults in a routine, and athletes doing somersaults with multiple twists.

At the provincial championships there was a new team event where clubs submitted teams with athletes from multiple levels. Fans and teammates were encour-

aged to cheer extra loud and wear flair and make signs. Revelstoke ended up placing third out of 15 teams and winning a plaque.

Frankie Howe proudly won a silver plaque in the provincial all-round event.

All-round awards are for athletes competing in all three disciplines and are based on scores from preliminaries.

Other highlights were: • Stephanie Batke and Ainslee Arthurs won a gold in p4 synchronized trampoline.

• Devyn Gale and Alyssa Bollefer won silver in under-10 synchronized trampoline.

• Josh Winger placed second in both of his events in prelims but because of illness couldn’t compete his final. He ended up winning a bronze in p2 double mini trampoline.

• Stephanie Batke made finals in both events and won a silver in p4 trampoline.

Executive Director Judy Goodman said participants created a good discussion about city services and gave their input on the Chamber’s efforts to help shape city taxation policy.

“We want to know how people really feel,” Goodman said.

“I think we learned that people really do care. I think people want more information.”

A feedback panel had lots of suggestions. They included: – ending make-work projects – eliminating unnecessary bylaw enforcement

– contracting out city services – staff reductions – reducing the number of paid consultants Following the open house, the Chamber held a social at The Cabin, where Agnes Kowalczuk hosted, serving up free cotton candy martini teasers.

Did you know that The Cabin’s cocktails have earned a mention in GQ Magazine? Snowboard superstar Travis Rice gave them an endorsement dating back to his time filming The Art of Flight here in town.

At the mixer, the chamber board and membership were again focused on the city tax issue. Nathan Weston served on both the city budget focus group and the Chamber of Commerce’s committee looking into the tax issue; their final report

should be an interesting read.

Another topic of discussion included a challenge of the city numbers; some feel the way the city is reporting the taxation increase actually underplays the actual tax increases year over year.

The chamber is hosting Katrina LaNoury from BC Assessment at an April 23, 5 p.m. Business After Business event, where she’ll speak about the assessment process and delve into the vacation home

Obituaries Ann Mary Aarnoudse Ann Mary Aarnoudse passed away at Queen Victoria Hospital, Revelstoke on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the age of 75 years.

There will be no formal funeral service by Ann’s own request. A gathering of family and friends will follow later in the summer of 2013.

Ann was born in Arvilla, Alberta on July 22, 1937 and had been a resident of Revelstoke since 1973.

She loved fishing and camping and consistently out-fished her partner Lloyd. Ann loved to can fish and cook and was known for her wonderful feasts provided for family and friends at Christmas and Easter. Those attending these events were always provided with her wonderful cherry delight dessert.

She enjoyed spending time reading and doing puzzles and relished in the time spent with all of her family.

Ann was predeceased by her siblings: John, Bill, Steve, Frank and Verna. She is survived by commonlaw partner, Lloyd Grayson of Revelstoke, exhusband, Pieter Aarnoudse of Revelstoke, children: Jack (Lorrie) Aarnoudse of Revelstoke, Terry (Deb) Aarnoudse of Okotoks, Murray (Jannine) Grayson of Lloydminster, Alta., Brenda Grayson of Edmonton and Keith (Stephanie) Grayson of Halifax; Grandchildren Johnathan, Jennifer, E.J. and Kitten; great grandchildren: Kayden, Aliesha, Jordan and Austin; siblings George Pendrack of Morinville, Alta., Margaret Finnigan of Westlock, Alta; as well as numerous nieces & nephews.

Hannelore Maria (Hanne) Scherm Hanne(lore) Maria Scherm passed away at her residence in Revelstoke on Saturday, March 9th, 2013 at the age of 71 years.

A memorial service will be held from St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Revelstoke on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 1 pm with Reverend Dan Meakes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 729 Victoria Street, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 2B5 or to the Asthma Society of Canada 124 Merton Street, Suite 401, Toronto, Ontario M4S 2Z2, in memory of Hanne.

Hanne was born in Germany on March 2, 1942 and had been a resident of Revelstoke since 1980. In her first few years in Revelstoke, Hanne assisted her husband, Volker with their outfitting company, Monashee Outfitters. She went on to work at Moberly Manor where she greatly enjoyed helping others, and in recent years Hanne could be found assisting the community with her work at St. Peter’s Good Will Store. She enjoyed the free time she found doing her artwork, reading and spending time with her family.

Hanne was predeceased by her husband, Volker Scherm, companion Martin Ness, one sister Ursula and one brother George. Meanwhile, the scroll – the part the violinist holds onto – is carved into shape.

Quade showed me two scrolls he was working on. Unfortunately, they would both have to be thrown out – one because of a knot and one because of a crack.

Once all the pieces are carved, they are glued together and the remaining elements of the violin are attached.

That’s the process a nut shell. In reality, it’s a painstaking process that takes years to master.

Quade said everything he makes is accurate to one-tenth of a millimetre.

Many pieces have ended up as firewood, he admitted.

“It’s been 10 years and I’m still improving every time,” he said. “I’m still trying to improve every time. If I got worse, then I would quit.”
