One dead after two vehicle collision

Recruitment success Northern Health has successfully recruited nearly a dozen Northern Medical Program (NMP) graduates to include in a total of 55 physicians recruited since Jan. 1, 2012 from around the province, country and world.

While most of the students in the NMP are still in residency or their five-year specialty training programs, Northern Health has begun to see the program meeting the needs of communities and families of northern B.C. Members of the first graduating class are

March 15 around 9 a.m. the Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services responded to a two vehicle crash on Highway 97 just south of Ten Mile Lake. Upon arriving on scene, emergency service personnel found that a passenger in one of the vehicles was deceased.

Although it is early in the investigation, police have determined a tow truck working in the area on an unrelated matter resulted in the south bound traffic coming to a stop.

One of the vehicles in this line of south bound traffic pulled out into the north bound lane in an attempt to continue south.

This resulted in a head on collision with a north bound pickup. A passenger in the southbound vehicle succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

At this time causal factors are not known, however Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic, North District Collision Analyst and the BC Coroners Service continue to investigate.

National Poison Prevention Week in Canada is March 17 to 23. It’s a good time to check your home to see how you store dangerous chemicals and cleaning solutions. Look at your medication storage, too. Ensure all these products are kept out of reach of children and educate your older children about the signs of poisoning and have them help keep the younger children safe.

In Canada, 50% of pregnancies are unplanned. Many women aren’t aware of emergency contraception options. These are available from your pharmacist who can explain how to use them. If used within 24 yours of unprotected sex, these products can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 95%.

Speaking of pregnancy, it is well-known that women who plan to get pregnant should start taking a vitamin supplement containing folic acid (at least 0.4mg daily). This product will prevent neural tube defects in the brain and spinal cord. It has been suggested that all sexually-active women take folic acid in case of an unplanned pregnancy.

Some eye drops have to be shaken before each use to get the proper dose.

When instilling drops, pull the lower eyelid down forming a small pouch.

After instilling the drop into that pouch, gently close the eyes for 30 seconds while pressing the bridge of the nose so the drop doesn’t move out of the eye through the tear duct.

A growing issue in the Cariboo

Do you have a green thumb? Maybe you do and don’t know it! This article is the first in a 3-part series on how to Just Grow It! brought to you by the Quesnel Climate Action Committee. The second article in this series will discuss back yard composting and the final article will outline container gardening. ardening is endlessly rewarding and you can’t eat food grown closer to home than from your own backyard. It is easy to learn how to grow low-cost, tasty and healthy vegetables for you and your family. As an added benefit, you’ll be helping the planet by participating in local food production and decreasing your carbon footprint.

Step 1 – Prepare your ground: Location Location - Location Choose a garden location and remove all the vegetation (you may need a rototiller for this).

Quesnel Climate Action Group Enrich the soil with organic material. Manure from barnyard animals can do wonders. Make sure the poop is completely composted so you don’t get all those nasty seeds in your soil.

Thoroughly rake the soil to pull out all the little stones, break up bigger clumps of earth and mix in manure. Compost and peat moss are also good soil amendments.

Step 2 – Planning your garden: the devil is in the details I know, you thought this next section was going to be planting not planning your garden. But planning what, when and where to grow is a key step to having a productive garden.

Your garden plan should

ideally have rows run from north to south (when rows run east-west, a tall crop in a south row can easily shade out a shorter crop in the next row north.)

If the garden is on any kind of slope, make the rows run across the slope rather than up and down, or your garden (and all its soil) will migrate to the bottom of the hill in the first heavy rain.

Plan for tall plants (sunflowers, peas, beans) to be on the northern and eastern sides of the plot.

Timing is key – plan to plant the fast maturing plants like radish, lettuce, peas and spinach in oneweek intervals for four weeks so the plants don’t all mature at once.

Step 3 - ready, get set, grow!

Sowing the seeds Mark your row with stakes at each end and stretch a line between them so you plant straight rows, or you can sew seeds in a patch if you’re not a straight row type.

Make furrows barely 1 cm deep for small seeds, and 2 cm deep for the

larger ones. Scatter small seeds evenly and close together. Follow the directions on the seed pack for spacing.

Cover seeds with soil and tamp down (pat gently with your hand like your lightly spanking the soil.)

Make sure you mark the row or patch.

You can use a popsicle stick or the empty seed pack turned upside down on a stick.

Now you’re ready to water – seeds must have continuously moist soil around them until they sprout. Check for moisture every day and if the soil seems too dry, water it lightly. Do not overwater: the soil should be damp, but never waterlogged.

Thinning and weeding Begin thinning when the seedlings are 3 – 5 cm high. It might seem wasteful to destroy perfectly good seedlings, but it’s a must. If left thick, radishes will not form bulbs, carrots will not grow properly, and lettuce will form undersized heads.

Weeds compete for

the available moisture and nutrients. Work out a weeding program. A once- or twice-a-week trip between your garden rows with a hoe will make the world of difference.

Watering and mulching Plants need about 40 mm of water each week.

During hot, rainless weather, or whenever the garden soil becomes powdery and dry, you will have to water your garden.

Remember deep watering is far more effective than brief, shallow watering.

Water in the morning or early afternoon, so that leaves can dry off before nightfall. Wet leaves are more susceptible to fungal diseases.

Mulch is a soil cover such as leaves, hay, or grass clippings.

If you use mulch, you won’t have as much weeding to do. Also a layer of mulch around your plants will conserve moisture in the soil.

Using these simple instructions, with a lot of elbow-grease and a little trial and error, you will be ready to Just Grow It!

Wrong victim

hameful and disgusting come to mind when discussing media’s reaction to the conviction of the two high school students who raped a 16-year-old girl.

One CNN reporter used cliche phrases such as “watched as their life fell apart” to describe the reaction of the two convicts as they were being sentenced.

She even went so far as to state “it was very difficult to watch” as the guilty verdict was begin handed down.

Another favourite was sympathy over the judgement both rapists will be registered as sex offenders.

“This will haunt them for the rest of their life,” she said, highlighting how difficult it will be to obtain employment for the two.

Seriously?

Trent Mays, 17 and Ma’lik Richmond, 16, were not only found guilty of sexually assaulting the 16-year-old female, but of photographing her naked body as she lay passed out.

The photo was then distributed.

Richmond is sentenced to at least one year, Mays double, as he was convicted of distributing the photograph.

It’s not even their sentencing (or lack thereof) that is shocking. It’s the fact media turned this case on it’s head by sympathizing with the high school jocks – completely disregarding the actual victim in this case.

What message are we sending our children? That alcohol is an excuse? That if a young girl has a “reputation” she is at fault for other’s actions?

It’s how society views sexual conduct and, right now, we’re sympathizing with accused rapists’, we are mourning the “end of their lives” and providing excuse after excuse for their deplorable behaviour.

It’s up to us to ensure theses types of events and actions are viewed as one of the most deplorable, sickening and shameful acts. It starts at home and it needs to start now.

Both parties have betrayed us T

here was some public business conducted in the final frantic days of the B.C. legislature session last week, but you likely wouldn’t have heard much about it.

Premier Christy Clark’s skimpy governing agenda was overshadowed by the delivery of an internal investigation report into her government’s ethnic outreach program.

A review by four deputy ministers detailed what reporters already knew from a memo and meeting notes leaked to the NDP. The plan started in the premier’s office, led by Clark’s deputy chief of staff, who resigned as soon as it was made public.

A B.C. Liberal Party employee attended the first meeting, expressly intended to organize events to impress immigrant communities, then harvest the goodwill in the form of contact lists for the coming election campaign.

After 10,000 e-mails were collected and 27 interviews conducted, they revealed a few significant details.

Former multiculturalism minister John Yap knew or should have known that the scheme was being

B.C. Views kept secret because it was an inappropriate use of government resources.

He won’t be back in cabinet, although Clark said he intends to run for re-election in RichmondSteveston.

Yap’s executive assistant resigned when the report came out, admitting he helped cover the tracks of political meddling in the hiring of three outreach contractors with sufficient loyalty to the party.

Clark insists she knew nothing of this plan. She tabled the investigation report, and then announced that the B.C. Liberal Party had written a $70,000 cheque to the government to cover the estimated cost of the inappropriate political work done by non-political staff.

Here’s the part taxpayers may not fully appreciate.

There are authorized

payroll. Yiu’s VancouverFraserview candidate page boasts of his ethnic outreach work, which included tirelessly warning B.C.’s Chinese community about the evils of the harmonized sales tax.

In fact, it was the NDPYiu operation that inspired a B.C. Liberal copycat plan.

The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing.

It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee.

This is the B.C. LiberalNDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light.

Both of these schemes have the same stink. Both are intentional abuse of taxpayers’ money for the political gain of the dominant parties. There is no moral high ground for either of them.

political staffers all over the legislature, in the premier’s office, the opposition leader’s office and two teams of caucus employees who spend much of their time digging up dirt on the other party. All are paid by you and me.

A line is crossed only when a non-political employee such as a ministry communications director acts on behalf of the party.

The main offender in that capacity was one Brian Bonney, whose records suggested he spent half of his time on party work. He quit in February, before the plan was leaked, and the party paid back half of his salary for the 18 months he was on the public payroll.

NDP outrage over this was blunted by another leaked document. This one was from a neverreleased 2010 report by Auditor General John Doyle, which condemned a five-year program of skimming money from NDP constituency office budgets all over the province and using it for political work.

In a nice bit of symmetry, much of the more than $400,000 was spent to put three-time candidate Gabriel Yiu on the NDP caucus

A letter of apology, a letter of hope Editor: I’m not really sure how I am going to share this, but I do, however, know what I want to say.

Lately, in the media – YouTube, Facebook, the news – there has been a lot of awareness given to anti-bullying in light of publicly made pleas from victims of bullying.

I myself was bullied horribly from grade four through 10, and even after this time frame I really did not see myself as much. I have been called names, physically injured, made fun of for my Christian beliefs and lifestyle, been mocked for being of an ethnic race and have been lead to believe I was not acceptable, not lovable, not desirable and simply not wanted.

I have had attacks come from both girls and guys alike for no reason other than simply being different. I hated being different because It made me feel vulnerable. Better

to be invisible then to fight the assaults of school kids right?

Maybe you your self can relate. Maybe you were the victim or the attacker, or even both. I know I have been both.

I sometimes slipped up to save my own face.

Better to attack than be attacked.

Throughout school I just wanted to be loved, noticed and accepted.

I wanted a friend. Sure I had lots of people I “knew,” but they didn’t really know me. They did not see the depression, the suicide, the self harm and hate.

They did not see the tears from rejection or hear the silent pleas for something different. They never saw the journal prayers for a friend or for the hell to end. No, all they saw was the outer, laughing, loud, energetic, weird me.

I did not let them see because I was afraid they would see my problems

and they would decide to leave me.

That said, I know I did not have the worst of the deal at school. I know there were many kids worse off than me... but loneliness, rejection, hurt, fear, anger, confusion... it all kills something in the end.

Maybe it will kill self esteem, beauty, confidence... love... life.

Something always dies.

I don’t want this to be a “woe is me, I lived a horrible school life.”

I want this to be an apology and a letter of hope. I am so, so, so, sorry for not standing up and saying hi. I am so sorry for not being strong and refusing to silently watch your attacks.

I am sorry for not being a friend. You are beautiful, lovable, strong, confident, precious. Life!

You are worth it. I was just too dumb and busy surviving to notice.

I was too much of a coward to do anything.

I know the fear of “if I stand up for myself or someone else, I will just get beat up worse next time.”

Believe me, I know what it’s like to be afraid while walking down a hallway. I know the feeling of sitting quietly at a desk during class knowing it’s the safest place to be. I know.

I can’t promise it will get better right away. You might be beat up worse, but just maybe you won’t.

Taking a stand might not make you popular, but it will make you safe.

Sometimes being strong means having to be weak.

Unite with the people that accept you. Be the friend to the lonely kid you walk by every day, then you both are not alone anymore. To have a friend you need to be a friend.

Talk to someone, even if it’s the school counsellor. The great thing about counselling is that it’s private and non judgemental. If you

are at harm to yourself or someone else, then yes legally they have to notify authorities.

I know asking for help is scary and it can leave you feeling so exposed and vulnerable, but the other side of help is so freeing.

I know making that call helped me. One thing I can definitely promise you from my own insight on looking back at school is that the race for popularity ends after high school, if you choose it.

Many things that were looked at as “social death” situations in high school are not important at all in the real world. Life has so much opportunity and beauty to give you, so why waste your life trying to blend into the uglier side of society?

Be the change you want to see. Speaking to my grad class and anyone else I came across growing up, I know sorry won’t change anything of the past now and I know you

have all moved on from high school. But the truth is scars don’t always heal, words do hurt.

I am sorry if I caused them in any way. I pray you can find the healing you need and you can continue on this journey of life here on earth.

My own scars from bullying are healing every day, despite the battle.

One good thing I can testify to for surviving bullying is that it has taught me compassion and to strive for justice.

Choices can give you hell, whether it be your own or from others, but you always have that same choice to do good. I can’t go back and change the past, but I hope to change the now.

So I ask you again, please forgive me. Stay strong, be beautiful. Be you!

love.

For one 14-year-old cockatiel named Baby, it was a long journey home, but home was where he wanted to be.

It all started normally in the Climenhage family on March 8; young Lachlan was getting ready for hockey at the arena at about 9:30 a.m. and Baby, whose large cage usually has it’s door open, was climbing around the outside of the cage.

“We knew he needed his wings clipped but we hadn’t gotten around to it yet,” dad James said.

“My son was moving his gear to the now open front door, Baby got spooked and flew through the front door. We lost sight of him as he disappeared over the neighbours roof with two crows in hot pursuit.”

It was a cold morning. James walked up and down McLean Street about five times, but couldn’t find their beloved family pet.

“I finally gave up at about 5 p.m.,” James reported.

That night the temperature dipped below

freezing and the family fear the worst.

Assuming Baby had survived the cold morning and hadn’t been eaten or killed, nothing short of a miracle was going to save him.

“I awoke Saturday morning to frost on the ground and a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that Baby was gone,” he said.

“We all felt awful.”

That feeling was short-lived however.

Lacklan’s Aunt Maria called that morning to say “Anyone missing a cockatiel?” was posted on Crooked Leg Ranch’s Facebook page.

James raced to the computer and contacted Fauna Eyford from the non-profit animal rescue association.

Baby was safe and sound in his cage (with the door closed) by Saturday night.

According to Fauna, Baby had made his way to the field at Quesnel junior secondary and about 4:30 p.m. was spotted by one of the teachers. The teacher noticed a

number of crows dive-bombing something on the field. When they went to investigate, they found a cockatiel sitting in the snow. When they called the SPCA, who refused to take it, the teacher called the bylaw office and Willow Eyford rescued the cockatiel and called her sister to say she was dropping off a bird.

“I was really holding out for a happy ending, but I finally had to assume the worst. I guess sometimes miracles do happen,” James said.

After returning home, the family was concerned Baby might develop pneumonia after prolonged exposure to the elements, but Baby is right as rain and back to his usual antics.

“He appears to be no worse for wear,” James happily reported.

“We very much appreciate the efforts of Crooked Leg Ranch. It’s not clear what would have happened to Baby had they not been in operation.

“Even if he did survive, it’s likely we never would have seen him again.”

International Women’s Day The Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre held an event in conjunction with the Quesnel Art Gallery on March 8, 2013 to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event was held at the Quesnel Art Gallery and included their March exhibit “Artimesians” which was named in honour of Artemesia Gentileschi, a woman painter during the Renaissance period. A film was shown titled, Pray the Devil Back to Hell. It chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. These women won the Nobel Peace Prize for their amazing work. There were approximately 90 people in attendance. The Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre would like to thank everyone who so generously sponsored this event. Local Boy Honoured Superintendent Bruce Harford On February 7, 2013, Superintendent Bruce Harford of the British Columbia Ambulance Service was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in a ceremony held at the Minnekhada Lodge in Coquitlam.

Bruce, the eldest son of Stan and Lauretta, was born in Quesnel and grew up in the Dragon Lake area. He began his Public Safety career in 1978 with the Provincial Ambulance Service in Quesnel as a student volunteer. He worked briefly as a Paramedic in northern Alberta before returning to Quesnel, and ultimately accepted a career position with what is no the British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) in the Lower Mainland, where he has filled a number of frontline, supervisory and leadership roles over the decades.

His credits include a Federal assignment to Eastern Europe, and a couple stints with Law Enforcement agencies in both Canada and the United States, including twenty years as a RCMPolice Auxiliary Constable in Burnaby and Quesnel. He has represented BCAS as a liaison to Hong Kong and Macau, and held responsibility for Ambulance Logistics and the Internationally Protected Persons Unit during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. He is a founding signatory of the Pacific Northwest Cross Border agreement, which permits the sharing of Medical and Logistics resources across the entire Canada/U.S. border and is a founding Member of the Alliance of Canadian EMS Honour Guards.

He is currently in a leadership role with the Duty Operations group which has operational responsibility for the BC Ambulance Service across the province. He maintains a complimentary role as the Officer in Charge of the BCAS Honour Guard.

He is a two-time recipient of the Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal and a U.S. Law Enforcement Medal.

Bruce lives in Coquitlam with his wife Elsa and travels extensively, most preferably and often to warmer climates, though his duties often take him all corners of our province.

The most superest The most superest of all the super leaguers was decided last week, as Willis Harper could not be taken down from the top position and ran away with the honours of victory despite not tasting victory on the night.

"It was a team effort. All the boys did really well," Willis Harper skip, Grant Wawryck said.

It was the first year for the team and it turned out to be a very successful one.

The Child Development Centre took the most points over the regular season and Frank's Supermarket won the 'B' event.

It was A&W with the futile win over Willis Harper, 7-2.

A&W came out making shots and Willis Harper struggled, as they had already clinched the title. Willis Harper could not be caught on the final night of super league curling.

Investors Group took down Billy Barker, 7-4.

Billy B's skip came through when the chips were down and nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, but just missed a tough

double take out to force extra ends. Investors Group were happy to finish on a winning note.

DLE took down CDC in a game that didn't see much action. In the end, it was DLE that took the lone point for a 1-0 win over CDC. JAR and Karin's Deli fought a for the win in a close game, with JAR coming out on top, 7-6.

JAR and Karin traded point for point, end for end in the hard-scrabble battle. JAR was up one coming home, with the hammer. Karin's was light on the last rock, leaving JAR with the extra point for the win.

Frank's Supermarket had an easy tie with Sky-Hi, taking them down 9-4.

With $300 on the line and Frank himself in the stands, all the fan's attention was drawn to the 'feature' game on sheet 'E', which is being dubbed 'the game off the century' by TSN's Vic Reuter. Frank's superior athleticism, good looks, desire and matching Lululemon outfits were too much for the Sky-Hi team.

Quesnel figure skaters were in Kelowna last weekend, challenging the stars and coming away with a piece of their shine.

It was the last tournament of the Star Skate Series for the year, as skaters vied for the final points to determine the champions.

Three of the five girls that made the trip took steps up the podium in the British Columbia/Yukon Section Pond to Podium StarSkate Super Series.

“I had the pleasure of watching almost every single Quesnel Figure Skating Club member perform and they all skated their hearts out,” coach Jo-Ann Nadalin said.

Cassandra Greenwood earned the Jr. Silver Ladies Super Series Championship by taking Gold in the freeskate event.

Greenwood said she was pleased with her golden year, particularly her last skate.

“I had lots of good skates in the year and in my last session I had a really good skate,” she said.

Carmen Huang capped her season with a golden skate in the Sr. Silver freeskate finals, earning the Sr. Silver Ladies Super Series Championship in the process.

Despite the top notch finish, Huang wasn’t entirely happy about her year, saying it was uneven.

to having consistent jumps and nailing them at competitions,” she said.

Selena Van Aert placed third in the Gold Ladies freeskate, taking second overall in the Gold Ladies Super Series.

Though her final skate did not live up to her expectations, Van Aert was happy with her season, after meeting many of her goals.

Those goals included beating her personal beast and landing jumps in competition which she practiced during the year.

“I’ve learned mind over matter this year. No matter what I do, it comes down to what I can do on competition day,” Van Aert said.

Kayla Flanagan finished the weekend firmly in the top ten at seventh, taking sixth in the Sr. Bronze Series despite a broken foot early in the season, which set her back.

Madison Nickolet took sixth in the STAR 13 and Over event, falling just short of the podium overall in fourth.

Both Huang and Van Aert are contemplating moving upwards from Star Skate, a move that will put them in a much more competitive bracket.

“It’s a little nerve wracking, but I feel I’m capable of doing well in it,” Van Aert said.

Huang is waiting to see how she does in her summer sessions before making the decision, saying “I want skate competitively, but I want to be ready for it.”

Days before Alison Duddy takes off from Prince George, she drew the winner of a rather large basket, or baskets.

The basket was raffled off, with tickets costing $2, to support Duddy and team B.C. in their quest to win nationals in Ottawa.

“It’s amazing how local businesses stepped up and donated for it,” she said.

“We were hoping for $800 – $1000. We raised nearly double that – around $1600.”

Between the last minute draw, fund raising from the curling club, cash donations by local businesses and her team mates’ fund raising the team has met their monetary needs.

Duddy leaves for Price George Thursday, taking off for Vancouver, and from there Ottawa, the next day.

Nationals run from Monday 24 – 31.

The nationals will be live streaming on the web, with feature games and live updates on the other games on the night.

The site http://wheelchaircurler.blogspot. ca/ has a link to the web streaming service for anyone wanting to watch the games live.

Nominees for the Quesnel Volunteer Citizen of the year will: • have contributed to the betterment of the community in a fashion that you feel is desirable and beneficial to all.

• have contributed in a positive manner in the areas of business, government, social improvement, community service, cultural arts, religion, youth work or any other area of activity that you feel contributes to a better community.

• have lived in Quesnel, or area, for a least the past calendar year.

Submitting a nomination: • Any person, group or corporation, except the City of Quesnel and the Quesnel Cariboo Observer, may make a nomination.

• Complete an official nomination form.

• Judges may not be aware of the nominee’s past voluntary work; therefore, nominations should include a nomination form with a brief statement outlining the reasons the individual is considered worthy of receiving the Award.

• Letters of support should include other accomplishments and relevant information that may be helpful in evaluating the nominee. Please limit each letter of support to one page.

• No other supporting material will be accepted.

• Nomination forms and letters of support must be delivered no later than 4 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013 to: City of Quesnel, 410 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, B.C. Quesnel Rotary Club members, together with Cynthia Bernier, Director of Instruction with SD 28, hold new books for Grade 2 classes throughout the district. The Quesnel Rotary Club raised money for local literacy projects and this is one of them. Every Grade 2 class in the district will be receiving some new books for the classroom for students to enjoy during their free reading time.
