BEAUTIFUL YOU: What trends are we seeing for spring and summer when it comes to make-up colours and “looks”? ROXANA DA COSTA: This season’s trend is a romantic revival inspired by nature. “Healthy, beautiful skin starts with microdermabrasion and laser While on one side we are seeing peel. Micro helps with the elasticity for the skin, and the laser peel glowing skin with extreme highimproves the collagen. BY: Are there differences among trends for younger women versus more mature faces? RD: There aren’t many age differences in trends. The most important considerations for more mature skin is that “less is more” and to be careful with the use of shimmer and frosted base colours which can accent lines and wrinkles more. A well-hydrated skin with creamtextured products can create a beautiful fresh and glowing complexion, thus bringing out a more youthful look. BY: Tips for how to “get the look”? RD: The colours this season go from vibrant to nudes with a great selection of product offerings to satisfy the discriminating tastes of the “chic and hip” as well as the sophisticated professional woman. While a bare look might be the perfect choice for the busy and time-restricted woman, decide on a look that suits your lifestyle and stay flexible to the idea of making some adjustments to transform your look to suit a special occasion. The easiest transformation from subtle or “natural” to a more vivid or “dramatic” is by focusing on the lips. For example, you may have bare eyes with just mascara and well groomed eyebrows and a glowing based complexion. Then choose a vivid or darker colour for the lips (consider using a lip liner for more definition), emphasized blush and the look is transformed just like that. The best tip I can offer is that if you’re not makeup savvy or have never worn makeup, set up a lesson with a makeup artist or salon professional. Most hair stylists and aestheticians also have make-up training. A private lesson will offer you a personalized tutorial to suit your own needs and wants.

BY: What suggestions do you have for women wanting to protect their skin, yet still enjoy the summer sunshine? RD: A great skin care system that supports the outer most layer of the skin and a daily sun-protecting lotion are no longer an option, but a necessity. Hormone imbalance & stress can cause acne, unwanted facial hair, premature aging and hair loss. Clear Skin Victoria addresses the underlying cause while treating your cosmetic concerns. It’s simple – use a tinted moisturizer with an SPF daily to protect your skin from the harmful effects of environmental aggressors, especially the UV rays. Use products that are high on anti-oxidants like traditional vitamins A, E and C, along with naturally derived ingredients like astaxanthin (25 times more powerful than vitamin E) alfalfa and algae, Lycopine (tomato extract), bilberry, blueberry and cranberry, resveratrol from the Japanese knot weed. These are all antioxidants to help fight environmental aggressors and protect skin against free radical damage. BY: Anything else you’d like to add? RD: Make-up is an art, but you don’t have to have professional training to practice it. The principles are easy to understand. 1. The foundation or canvas – aka your skin – needs preparation to achieve a more polish finish (even for a fresh-faced look). 2. Invest in at lest a basic skin care regime before spending money on make-up. 3. The aim with make-up or the goal when creating a daytime look is to enhance features and not to cover up. If you feel the need to cover up, you should consider a visit to the aesthetician or skin specialist. 4. “The best beauty is when you can be your best self.”

from the inside out

By Jennifer Blyth As we bid farewell to winter and welcome spring with open arms, Victorians are looking for ways to look and feel like their best selves. Often, that starts with keeping things healthy on the inside. While the weather may be getting sunnier, the continued cool temperatures and slow recovery from winter means we still need to pay attention to the possibility of viruses. “Because it was such a tough winter for viruses, people are still looking for immune boosters,” notes Bonnie Elendiuk, floor manager and certified herbalist and product liaison for the Vitamin Shop. Winter’s holdovers mean many Victorians are treating the results of lung, bronchial or sinus problems, which can also be exacerbated by the onset of allergy season. It’s often a good idea to start with an immune-builder high in things like vitamins C, D3 garlic and echinecea, for example. In addition, herbal tinctures are also available for more specific bronchialrelated ailments, Elendiuk notes. Those suffering from seasonal allergies may want to search for ingredients such as Querectin, which usually comes with the immune-boosting vitamins C and D3. Those trying to combat specific allergies can also consider homeopathic treatments, such as nettles or bee pollen, but it’s essential to start slowly and build up gradually to avoid a reaction to the pollen, Elendiuk notes. As a time for rejuvenation, many also see spring as the perfect opportunity to try a cleanse, a way to clear the body of toxins through diet and supplements. Many cleansing kits are available, so to ensure you use one that’s right for you, it’s a good idea to discuss your needs with a qualified product advisor. If a you haven’t undertaken a cleanse

before, start slowly by adjusting your diet first, and try to begin on a weekend. “It’s basically focusing on fruits and vegetables, lots of water, and if you’re not vegetarian, chicken and fish,” Elendiuk explains. Those on a cleanse generally avoid dairy (other than some yogurt), bread and grain products, and alcohol, and limit the exposure to caffeine. Lots of water is essential, especially for those increasing their fibre content considerably with fruits and vegetables, and it’s important for people with medical conditions to consult their medical practitioner beforehand. Typically people will feel lighter and better overall following a cleanse and they should notice an improvement in energy, sleep, and bowel function. “It’s not a weight-loss program but a lot of people will experience weight loss because they’re eating better,” Elendiuk notes. For those who undertake a longer cleanse, “they really experience a much healthier body.”

Expect to see lots of bangs this season, worn with both shorter and longer styles, along with bobs and cropped cuts, both making a comeback, says Yasmin Morris, colourist and network educator for Bumble and Bumble. Perfect for summer, the look features plenty of natural movement, as is the case with longer styles. “When the hair is long right now, it’s generally wavy, Morris says. Dual-textured looks are also popular, where the hair might be worn straight over the scalp before becoming wavy below the ears. Popular culture buffs may be interested to consider how the upturn in the economy is affecting local hairstyles. While the “hombre hair colour – where the hair is darker at the roots and gradually becomes lighter – has been popular as people tried to stretch the time between colours, as the economy improves, people are ready to try something a little different, Morris notes. This spring, the higher-maintenance platinum blonde is making a comeback, along with more creative touches like having a pastel colour strip near the face, for example.

Avoiding injury and getting the most from your workout begins before you head outside By Jennifer Blyth As soon as the sun starts to peek out more frequently and hang longer in the evening sky, the sight of new runners, walkers and cyclists can’t be far behind. And while activitiy is a good thing – essential to keeping our bodies in good working order – those who have been largely inactive for some time may experience challenges if they try to go too hard or too far too fast. “Staying healthy through training depends on a variety of factors including finding the right training intensity and increasing it gradually, using correct technique and biomechanics to pre“Starting my day with ‘The fountain of Youth’ exercises in the vent injury, morning, followed by a good breakfast and supplementing with good qualGreens+O, BioSil, Healthy Skin soft chews and fish oils.” ity equip– Renee Wilson, The Vitamin Shop

ment, proper warm up and stretching post exercise, proper hydration and nutrition, as well as adequate rest and recovery time between workouts,” says Kasey Thompson, registered massage therapist with Victoria Massage Therapy and Health Solutions. While some athletes know the value of preventive care, Thompson and her colleagues commonly see patients after an injury has occurred. Physiotherapy or athletic therapy can help with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute injuries such as sprains and strains, concussions, subluxations and deep bruising. One or a combination of massage therapy, physio and/or athletic therapy would be appropriate for treatment of overuse and chronic injuries/conditions such as tendonitis, muscle tension and pain, spasm such as of the lower back or calves, joint pain, headaches, etc., Thompson says. However, given that prevention is the best medicine, “I always tell my patients that it’s much easier to implement preventative measures than it is to fix a problem after the fact.” Most injuries are related to incorrect biomechanics, improper technique, over-training and bad habits. “It’s very important to do a proper warm up to prepare your

body for the work to come, and to cool down and stretch post-exercise. If you can fit in a full-body stretch post-workout, great. If not, focus on the areas you just used. Stretches should be gentle and held for a minimum of 30 seconds to one minute. To efficiently use your time, try stretching more than one area at once. For example, stretch your rotator cuff by gently pulling the arm across the chest while stretching your calf with your foot extended against a wall,” Thompson says. In addition to proper hydration and nourishment to maximize performance and avoid burn-out, proper equipment and fitting is also key. “Something as simple as a postural and gait

analysis, a professional bike fitting or good quality footwear can have a huge impact on performance and preventive care. For example, a training shoe should be fitted for a person’s mechanical foot type in order to provide support and flexibility in the right areas,” Thompson says. Avoiding training injuries also means listening to your body and being aware of the differences between “feeling the burn” and feeling pain, Thompson says. “Feeling the burn means you are challenging your muscles and cardiovascular system, pushing their performance capabilities to the point of fatigue. Depending on the intensity of the exercise you should feel a mild to moderate burning sensation/discomfort/fatigue. You should never feel sharp, shooting or intense pain during exercise. If you do, stop what you’re doing and consult a professional to determine the cause,” she notes. “It may be that you just need to correct your form, work on your technique or modify your equipment.” In addition, be sure to factor in recovery time between work“Peace of Mind- Decreased stress and cortisol levels will have outs. “Days of complete rest a huge impact on your happiness and beauty from the inside out. Bright, bold

Sunny skies are bringing an equally sunny outlook on the fashion scene this spring as message is clearly bright and beautiful. Cheerful floral patterns on capris, shorts and jackets are showing up in numerous store windows, along with bold blocks of colour paired with companion colours or neutrals. For those who prefer their colours a little more subtle, there’s plenty of pretty pastels in citron, mauve, aqua and more. Black and white never goes out of style, but this spring, look for the classic pairing in everything from shoes to sundresses and in solids, stripes, geometrics and florals. Footwear has been coming into its own for some time and there’s no better time than spring to put your best foot forward. “Finally, shoes are being featured in their own right, being the focus of the whole outfit more and more. The emphasis is not on matching but on complimenting as part of a pattern such a picking up on one colour as Photo courtesy Heart & Sole Shoes part of a floral pattern,” says Freni Waidelich, Textured orange pumps from manager of Heart & Sole Shoes on Cook Miz Mooz pop with an aqua skirt Street. and neutral top. “This is the time to bust out your bright summer colours in shoes and accessories that you’ve been thinking are too loud. Neon is really big. Some pastel shades of peach, lemon and baby blue are being featured as staples and fit in nicely if you don’t like brights.” Bright and cheery is the order of the day with both florals and solid colours, including cobalt, aqua, mint, yellow, emerald, fuchsia, red and tangerine, Waidelich says. Look for design details such as laser-cut leather and have some fun with playful shapes. Recalling the ‘90s, sporty wedge sneakers are back, while for those who like to accessorize, add a little bling with beading and reptile print.

Foot Forward

By Jennifer Blyth

For both men and women, sandal season is the perfect excuse to show our toes some open air. But are your feet ready for their starring role? “Some of the most common concerns I see are toe nail problems, whether they’re ingrown and infected or fungally infected,” explains podiatrist Dr. Gregg Congdon. Other common issues that bring patients to the doctor’s office include athlete’s foot, a fungus which typically appears with an itching and burning sensation between the toes, and plantar warts, which come from a virus and can appear anywhere on the foot, not only the sole. Today, both toenail fungus, which causes discolouration and thickening of the nail, and warts are easily treated with a state-of-the-art laser designed specifically for these issues, Dr. Congdon says, noting that typically 80 to 85 per cent of cases are cleared up with three treatments. Additional common areas of concern involve the foot bones and muscles. Bunions, for example, tend to run in families and appear more often in women. Essentially, a muscle imbalance causes the muscles on the inside of the toe to draw it toward the opposite side of the foot, leading the joint of the big toe to jut outward. Depending on the individual and severity, treatment can range from orthotic therapy to
