Farmers’ market finds new location

The office, which was also used as a school and a teepee company, was built in the 1960s and had not been used in several years. The LKB plans to burn down two more buildings this year, part of the chief and council’s desire to clean up the area.

The popular Creston Valley Farmers’ Market kicks off another season on March 23 by introducing local residents to its new site.

“This is a giant move toward our long-term plan to become a year-round market,” volunteer Len Parkin said last week.

The market has grown like Topsy in the last few years under the umbrella of the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition. It will now be operating on land adjacent to the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce, where last year’s mid-week markets were held.

“Our Spring Beginnings market on March 23 will be held indoors in the chamber of commerce,” organizer Martha Boland said. “We will be using both levels of the building, which will allow us to accommodate about 26 vendors. We already have great interest from a large selection of vendors.”

The move from its longtime home beside Millennium Park was spurred by the Town of Creston’s decision to allow the property to be used for an affordable family housing project. But Parkin said it is a win-win for the community.

Art in the Library is showing “Watercolor Friends”, a colorful look at the world through the eyes of Audrey Orosz, Marian Evans (right) and Marge Wiebe. Although all of the art is done in the same medium,

Phypers uses mixed media to give her art a ‘surreal look’

Market location will be permanent

From page 1 “This new location will become our permanent home for all of our markets and it has the advantage of visibility to Highway 3 traffic that flows through town,” Parkin said. “The opportunity to use the lower level of the chamber is huge. The indoor portion will afford protection from the weather for our fine arts vendors, making the farmers’ market more appealing to them.”

The new location also fulfills a goal of the food action coalition to increase its coordination with key community functions like the chamber, the Town of Creston and College of the Rockies.

“The Creston Valley Farmers’ Market reflects the values expressed in the creation of the Cultivating Creston brand,” Parkin said. “It helps create a more dynamic and economically viable community without changing the essence of our culture.”

Boland said the Spring Beginnings market will be a good test of the visibility of the location, both for vendors and community members. Signage, sandwich boards, chalk sidewalk art and posters will all be used to connect vendors with customers.

“All of our markets (a fall market has been held at Morris Flowers Garden Centre for the past few years) will now run from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. and all will be held at the same location,” Parkin said. “We are trying to be consistent in every way we can.”

He credited the Town of Creston for supporting the market, working with the food action coalition to ensure a suitable location was in place before the Millennium Park site was designated for the housing project. “[Town manager] Lou Varela has worked very closely with us and we are very appreciative of the support we have from the Town of Creston,” Parkin said.

Approval is anticipated this week from town council for the town works crew to run water and electrical lines for the vendors, and to level and gravel the site to make it safe and clean for vendors and visitors to the market.

“Our eventual goal is to become a yearround market,” Parkin said. “The goal for the food action coalition is food security, and that means supporting local producers and keeping them economically viable.

The market can play a large role in making that happen.”

Annaliese Phypers says the urge to create art is difficult to explain.

“I’ll just get restless and I won’t realize why,” she said. “Then I’ll start to paint and the feeling just disappears.”

Phypers, who lived her first 10 years in Creston and just returned a year ago, recently hung her first-ever show of mixed media pieces and paintings at Kingfisher Used Books on 12th Avenue North.

A familiar face behind the counter at Black Bear Books, Phypers’s work often begins with a portrait of a woman, to which she adds her own interpretation.

“I kind of like the surreal look,” she smiles.

Phypers grew up on Vancouver Island, but had a go at art school in Ottawa, lasting for a semester before realizing that the academic side of art wasn’t what she was looking for.

“The history and all the other courses was interesting, but I’m inspired by the prospect of creation rather than study,” she says. “I’m a big mixed media fan. I love the intricacy and lines of Art Nouveau. And I really admire certain graffiti artists.”

In high school, she got her first shot at making street art.

“I was with a group of people who set up a big concrete wall in the middle of town, right by a skate park,” she said.

“People really put a lot of work into it.

It’s a lot different when you can take your time and not have to keep one eye out, expecting to be caught!”

Returning to Creston after 12 years away was a pleasant surprise, she said.

“I was completely surprised at the change in the local arts scene. I was blown away — it was really inspiring.”

Phypers’s creativity isn’t limited to art. She is now partnering with artist/ foodie Jen Hart to start MasterPathFoods, a raw food vegan catering business operating out of a food truck.

She got her start in the food business in Duncan, where she worked at El Centro, a fusion café that served gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, specialty coffees, local wines and desserts, working closely with farmers in the area.

To her surprise, Phypers found herself in charge of the kitchen.

“The universe doesn’t give you anything you’re not ready for,” the owner told her.

“It was an amazing experience,” she said.

RCMP report thieves targeting unlocked vehicles

March 4 •After tracing a 911 emergency call received

by Creston Valley Hospital all the way to Alabama, and alerting Interpol about a police officer possibly in peril, a Telus trace revealed the call was generated from a computer and was likely part of a scam.

•A cellphone found on Sixth Avenue South was returned to its owner.

•A complaint was received from Oliver Road in Gray Creek that a male had breached

•A driver who had been consuming alcohol before entering Canada at Rykerts was issued a 24-hour driving suspension.

March 5 •A prank involving the theft of a friend’s shoes on 19th Avenue North went awry when the prankster stole the wrong shoes.

•A male who fell on Northwest Boulevard was taken to hospital for treatment.

March 6 •Note to marijuana growers: keep the music down. When police responded to a noise complaint from Stace Road, a male exiting the residence was bearing the distinct aroma of marijuana and had signs of plant residue on his T-shirt. Police obtained a search warrant and found an indoor grow op with 200 plants.

John Norris and Jessica Stoinski, along with two minors, face charges of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. Norris was held in police cells overnight when police determined he was in breach of court conditions set out after he was earlier charged with a similar offense.

•The owner of a vehicle found on Highway 95 that had the wrong plates on it was issued a warning and the plates were seized.

•A male resident of 16th Avenue North died suddenly in his home at the age of 54. The death is not considered suspicious.

•A shoplifting was reported by a Canyon Street business, which is handling the incident internally.

•Police received a complaint from 16th Avenue about an intoxicated guest. When they arrived at the residence it was apparent that the guest had not been drinking, but the complainant had.

•A 911 call was traced to a pay phone on Canyon-Lister Road, but there was no caller to be found when police arrived.

•A vehicle rolled over when it went off Highway 3A near Topaz Creek Forest Service Road. No injuries were reported.

•No injuries resulted from a collision on Highway 3A near Wynndel on slippery roads.

•Police could not trace a 911 call routed through the Topaz Creek cellphone tower.

March 7 •A small vacant outbuilding on Highway 21 burned to the ground.

•A 911 call from Osborne Road was blamed on kids playing with the phone.

•Police assisted a provincial agency with the apprehension of a child at a Highway 3A residence.

•Police were called about a property dispute on Pitt Road.

•A break-in on Hall Road at Sanca netted thieves a Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATV, two televisions, some alcohol, an Xbox, a remote control monster truck and a surround sound system.

•An Erickson Road resident reported that he was about to fall for a secret shopper scam until he read a cautionary story in the Advance.

March 8 •A 911 call was made by an intoxicated male who said his friends wouldn’t let him leave a party. Police investigated and determined they wouldn’t let him drive away due to his intoxicated state.

•A 79-year-old female died suddenly in her Airport Road home. Circumstances were not suspicious.

•A key was stolen from a vehicle on Pine Street.

•A Tomtom GPS and Sirius satellite radio were stolen from a vehicle on Cook Street.

•A male fell asleep at the wheel and drove off Highway 3/95, badly damaging his vehicle but sustaining no injuries.

•A 911 call through the Topaz Creek cellphone tower was attributed to pocket dialing.

•A complaint about a harassing phone call was received from Cory Road.

•Harassing phone calls were the subject of a complaint from Highway 3A. •Four speakers and a GPS were stolen from a vehicle on Seventh Avenue North.

•Police were called about a neighbors’ dispute on Crawford Creek Road.

•A summer residence on Riondel Road North was broken into. Stolen were Husqvarna and Stihl chainsaws, a 3,000-watt Honda generator and 11 saucers.

•A vehicle rolled down the hill on Fourth Avenue South and damaged a cable TV distribution box.

March 9 •Two males wearing black hoodies were spotted stealing a purse from a vehicle on Fourth Avenue South. They fled but the purse and contents were later recovered.

•Nothing was stolen when a vehicle on Third Avenue South was entered and rifled through.

•A breach of probation was reported from Newman Street in Kitchener.

•Alcohol was stolen when a cabin on Smith Road in Gray Creek was broken into.

•Thefts have yet to be determined in another Smith Road break-in.

•A wallet lost on 16th Avenue was dropped into a mailbox and then turned over to police.

•Police responded to a 911 call from Seventh Avenue North, where two males and a female, all intoxicated, were fighting. One male was held in police cells overnight but none would co-operate with the investigation.

March 10 •A vehicle went into the ditch on Highway 3 but no injuries were reported.

Green candidate focusing on energy and food production

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Sjeng Derkx wants Nelson-Creston voters to know that the Green Party is not comprised of left-wing idealists.

“We think private enterprise-minded people will find us to be a credible choice, and we are fiscally conservative,” he said in a visit to Creston last week. “We have the most thorough, detailed policy platform of all the political parties in British Columbia.”

The cabinetmaker, who moved to the Kootenays from the Lower Mainland in 1993 (he immigrated from Holland in 1982) so he could have a healthier environment, is making his first foray into politics as a candidate in the May 14 provincial election.

He has a strong history of community involvement.

“I’ve done lots of volunteering,” he said.

He was a founder of the Nelson Area Trails Society in 1998. The society has played a central role in the creation of the Ward’s Ferry Trail and the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail. He has been a regional director for Trails BC and helped acquire the Slocan Valley and Columbia & Western rail lines for hiking trails.

As deputy district election officer for Nelson-Creston, and also a federal deputy returning officer, Derkx has plenty of election experience, but this is his first as a candidate. And he’s disappointed voters won’t be casting ballots in a single transferrable vote system, which was narrowly turned down in the last provincial election.

“The STV would help involve people in the political process more than they are today,” he said, adding that electoral reform shouldn’t be dropped from the political conversation.

Energy is of particular interest to Derkx and his party, he said.

“B.C. is at a crossroads as far as energy is concerned,” he said. “Both the NDP and Liberal parties support fracking for natural gas. It makes us completely dependent on big oil, produces few jobs and is environmentally bad — it’s a terrible process.”

On economic issues, the Green Party is far from extreme, he said, and

promotes the localization of decisionmaking.

“For every $1 million invested in the fossil fuel industry we could be creating 17 jobs in the clean energy field,” he said. “We also want to put an emphasis on more efficient housing.”

Local food production is a key for the future, Derkx said.

“We need to invest in agricultural land and farmers,” he said. “Farmers need affordable land to be available.”

“Fewer bureaucrats and more works with their feet on the ground” are needed in both education and health care, the two areas that eat up most of the province’s taxes, he said. “We have to

promote healthy lifestyles by encouraging more activity among kids and adults.”

Derkx admitted that Green Party candidates don’t have the money to spend on campaigns that other party’s candidates do. He won’t be opening a campaign office in Creston and will instead focus on door-to-door campaigning. He is committed to attending all-candidates’ forums and will be at the Creston Valley Home and Garden Show in April. He also enjoys attending informal “coffee klatches”, which he finds “extremely useful”.

In the decade since I’ve returned to the newspaper business there have been few reporting assignments that I have enjoyed more than the ones that have taken me into our elementary schools. The hum of energy that accompanies the opening of a main door is palpable and the passion exuded by most teachers is both inspiring and reassuring. Visit an elementary school and it’s difficult not to feel optimistic about the future.

I have visited Erickson Elementary School to photograph Christmas concerts and witness programs at assemblies, to write about the installation of a new playground, to report on a visiting mask-making instructor and to talk to volunteers from the Creston Valley Rotary Club about the morning breakfast program. Those are only a few instances that come to mind. It’s a great school with a dynamic staff and committed parents.

It was with a sense of dread that I learned in January that principal Nancy DeVuono was not at her school, having been removed from her position only hours before the Christmas break. Consummate professional is the term that I have used often in describing DeVuono, who is energetic, vibrant, positive and completely dedicated to our public school system. She was, I learned, working on school district assignments until she is returned to her regular school duties.

Last year, DeVuono had a fall on the ice when she was skating with students. She suffered a concussion, then had a relapse, generally described as post-concussion syndrome, in June and finished out the school year on medical leave. Over the summer, some of the symptoms remained and she returned with doctor’s orders to work only at the administrative portion of her duties. Her job as principal is divided into 40 per cent classroom time and 60 per cent admin and office time. The doctor also recommended she get some additional clerical support, as the school office only has a secretary until 11:30 a.m. each day.

I have been struggling with this column. I had planned on writing something grandiose regarding the differences in cultures, the global Petri dish for varying levels and types of acceptance. What you accept … depends on who you are and where you come from. I had planned on talking about how a lot of what we label good and bad can come from acceptance.

How we can accept what is right just as easily as we can accept what is wrong. We are a funny animal.

Lately, though, I’ve been experiencing acceptance on a much more micro scale. Not what is good or bad or what is right or wrong — just what is: 1996, 1997 and 1998 were the years that my younger sister, my younger brother and I were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I

had been plagued by mysterious illnesses off and on for 13 years and sought acceptance from a medical community that began to see me as mentally ill. I happily accepted my

We accepted for fact the statement that misery loves company and other than sharing how tired we were or that our bad leg was acting up we did not talk about MS. It lived in the shadows; we would not give it light. It would not get the best of us.

The last few conversations I have had with my sister Leslie have been difficult to have and accept.

I have experienced some very debilitating periods during my relapses, both mental and physical.

They have lasted for days, weeks, months and even years.

Be sure to look for the ‘ucky’ stuff To the Editor: What is the fuss about bill C-45 as proposed by the federal Conservatives? My mother was a genius at hiding “ucky” foods in a casserole — liver was her favorite.

Bill C-45 was designed to do the same thing. Under pressure to please some of the people some of the time, the government put forth a complicated, all encompassing document, hoping to slip some “ucky” stuff through with the good.

First to raise the flag were First Nations peoples, whose concerns were mainly with the proposed changes to the Fisheries Act and Navigable Waters Protection Act, and the revision of the Indian Act. While the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association was excited about the changes, which may make it easier for them to slip pipelines through our B.C. pristine wilderness, and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities had requested changes so that streams that only run during spring runoff would no longer come under the act, making it easier to do bridge and culvert work, aboriginal defenders of the land saw a backdoor move to circumvent public protests against threats to our environment.

Hence, the Idle No More movement began as a Facebook page, by four Saskatchewan women, and became a social media phenomenon.

First Nations peoples, made up of many different nations, or tribes, with different interests, have long hoped for a completely revamped Indian Act. They rightly expect the federal government to consult with them before a new document is written.

My sister has gotten leg braces to help her weak legs, but her MS has launched a brutal assault and my sister at the moment (even with the steroid treatment) is too weak to stand or walk unaided. She is experiencing pain to the point of morphine and has been more frightened about “what is” than she thought possible.

We said that we would never let MS get the better of us, but in our talks have had to accept that no matter how valiantly or hard we battle it, inevitably, eventually, we will lose the war.

Instead of dealing with the whole act, the government included sections of bill C-45 to deal with First Nations issues, namely “leasing” of reserve lands. Some first nations have pursued economic development by leasing their lands for shopping centres, industrial parks, casinos, residential developments, etc., which creates income and jobs for their people. The Indian Act of today makes this process cumbersome and costly and delays cause some deals to lose out to competing jurisdictions.

Bill C-45 would streamline the process.

Rules governing the “sale” of reserve lands would not change. The Idle No More movement has concerns that this is a move to sell off reserve lands, but that is denied by Tom Flanagan, political science professor and Conservative fundraiser in Calgary. Flanagan claims the lawyer representing the Assembly of First Nations “cautiously endorsed the substance of the amendments” proposed in C-45, while pointing out that there had not been adequate consultation with First Nations.

While some of these proposed amendments may have been an honest attempt to right some wrongs in federal legislation, Liberal Bob Rae was quoted in Maclean’s, “If you go back to many of the principles of parliamentary democracy, they’re opposed to this joining together of several measures in one bill.

In some states in the United States, to do that is actually unconstitutional.”

NDP MP David Christopherson, chair of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, said in Maclean’s. “The government is trying to give the impression of a more detailed scrutiny of the budget, but, in reality, it’s all a charade. It leaves Canadians with the impression that this government is being transparent and accountable, but the reality is they are not.”

Excellent service by hospital staff To the Editor: There is no place on Earth I would sooner be than right here. And here is part of the reason why: On Feb. 14, I had to take Carol to the emergency room as she was suffering extreme pain in her tummy, which would not go away. Having seen the problems with emergency rooms and the time need in other towns and cities, I was concerned there would be a long waiting period for Carol to get help.

We got to the emergency department and within six or seven minutes there was a nurse there taking care of her — and while I realize it was a coincidence, her doctor just happened to be there about 10 minutes later.

This is to say thank you to all those wonderful and dedicated workers and staff. From the doctors to the cleaners, all were thoughtful and helpful to Carol. She was frightened, and so was I, but someone was there to hold her hand when I was not there, and to let her know she was being taken care of.

Even though they are overworked and understaffed at times, they were there.

Carol was back home in four days and the problem is now under control, thanks to the treatment and advice from the doctor, dietitian and nurses, and the good work being done in the hospital in our town.

We are very grateful and pleased to live in Creston.

Paul’s still super after more than four decades

W

hen Yves and Heather Ouellette decided to buy a convenience store a few blocks from a 7-Eleven, it wasn’t the news their accountant wanted to Story and hear.

“We are able to say it’s still going strong,” said Heather.

And it has been going strong for nearly 50 years, having opened as Paul’s Superette in 1965, in a location that had been a store for several years before that. The long-standing history was a big factor in their decision to buy the business.

“It wasn’t like we were starting a new business,” said Yves.

That meant the business came with an already established clientele, who were pleased to see the business continue after Danny and Marg Spring sold it to the Ouellettes.

“To see the regular customers every day brings a smile to my face,” said Heather.

They come in for a variety of reasons, including milk, candy, deli sandwiches and Kootenay Meadows cheese, and in the summer, iced cappuccino and gelato.

“We have diehard regular customers who love the gelato,” said Yves.

And, of course, nearly everyone who’s been to Paul’s knows about Screamers, a slushy topped with vanilla soft-serve.

“Even people who move away come back and say, ‘I had Screamers here when I was a kid,’ ” said Yves.

The store is also a pickup location for Canada Post and Purolator parcels, offers BC Lottery products, and is the only Western Union outlet between Cranbrook and Nelson, a service that customers appreciate.

“A number of customers were so thankful because they had to drive 20 minutes to Yahk to send money overseas,” said Yves, referring to the now-closed Yahk Western Union outlet.

With the superette being a regular stop for many residents, it’s no surprise that the owners know customers’ shopping habits better than the customers themselves.

“That’s the nice thing about a small town,” said Yves. “As soon as someone comes in, you go and get their cigarettes.

That’s something I hadn’t experienced before.”

The couple is from Calgary, where they owned a large campground and store with 25 staff, and moved to Creston five years ago. They had previously fallen in love with the Creston Valley and bought an investment property here a few years earlier.

As with any older building — most of it is pre-1965, and the second story of the attached house was added in the 1980s — there is always something to fix,

said Yves, one of his favourite aspects of running the business.

He has already redone the flooring, and made some major cosmetic changes to the outside, with fresh paint, new roofing and a new sign.

And while they’ve done what they can to put their own mark on the business, Heather and Yves both know that changing the name was never an option.

“If you change the name, people will still remember it as Paul’s,” said Yves.

Maple trees offer more than colour

Earlier this week, the girls and I cooked up some fun! We took a cordless drill, an old tap, a hook, a one-foot piece of hose and a clean bucket with a lid to the back garden. There we proceeded to tap one of our sugar maples.

In 13 years, I’ve never so much as put a nail hole in one of our trees. The way I see it, you do correct pruning or complete tree removal.

Apparently you can put one tap in a 12-inch diameter tree without any damage.

I drilled a hole about a half-inch wide and one inch deep to screw the tap into. Many years ago they said not to prune maples or birch trees through spring because they bled sap so much. They said wait until June; however, more recent research indicates that there is no long-term detrimental effect from pruning them at this time of the year. That is how it all started with a little pruning in the arboretum last week.

Hiking the Mount Creston Trail to Holly Falls

A couple of Sundays ago it seemed to be a good time to check out Holly Falls, which is accessed by a short trail about 3.2 kilometres up the Mount Creston Trail. We started out on the Balancing Rock Trail

Ed McMackin about mid-morning. The trail registry box was down, taken out by a large blowdown, a tree blown over by wind, which had been cut and moved off the trail.

Many of the trees in this area are not deeply rooted because in many places there is only a thin layer of soil over the bedrock. Sometimes all it takes to bring a tree down, along with disease, is a gust of wind at the right time and place.

In places, the Balancing Rock Trail has become a bed for a little stream created by runoff from snowmelt. In many places where there is exposed bedrock, water has no other course than to run down the slope. In a couple of months the trail will be totally dry.

Past the big rock, we encountered snow, which was even more plentiful when we reached the ravine near the boardwalk that passes over the swamp. In contrast to the soft bare ground in the shelter of large evergreens, the open area at the swamp and boardwalk were covered with snow that in places was a foot deep. A few open-

ings in the snow revealed a gurgling stream in an otherwise quiet scene.

The Rotary club members and friends have done an excellent job of making the boardwalk a solid structure again. They also added metal mesh, which makes the surface a lot safer to walk on when the boardwalk is quite slick from rain and autumn leaves.

For some reason or another there have been more than the usual number of opportunities this winter to observe the activities of pileated woodpeckers. The once threefoot hollow chiseled out of a grand fir by a pileated (see Out There in the Feb. 14 Advance) is now a 15-foot-high hollow. It reminds me of a dugout canoe, a hollowedout log to make a boat. Soon after the boardwalk, we ran across several new woodpecker holes in some large cedar trees. The rectangular shape of the holes identified them as the work of a pileated. How they can detect the location of carpenter ants is quite amazing. A pileated’s hearing must be much better than mine, although I have no problem hearing the rumble of a pileated’s drumming on the dead top of a large cedar tree when I press my ear to the trunk. Large trees are not only good sound transmitters but also transfer heat upward from the ground in their trunks, thus making a warmer place for ants to “sleep” or be somewhat active, in their woody tunnels, during warmer times of the winter.

Our destination for this midday jaunt was to hike as far as the falls, although the trail continues on up Mount Creston to a rocky viewpoint about 4.5 km from the start of the Balancing Rock Trail. The stretch ahead of us from the cedar grove was more open terrain, so we were walking over up to a foot or so of hard packed

a lot of tracks, double that of a human, so there may appear to be several moose. But there may have been only one moose along the trail browsing the tender last year’s growth from red-osier dogwood, buckbrush (red-stemmed coenothus) shrubs and mountain maples weighted down by snow. In one place, a moose bedded down right on the trail. That, along with all the droppings, indicated a moose had spent several days in the trail area.

Soon after the large birch grove, we came to the little ravine where the brook normally comes down from the falls and runs over the trail. However there was no water on the surface. With the fall rain we had and the relatively mild winter, I thought there would be some water in the brook as many other streams are open and running more than that of other years.

Beyond this ravine are a few switchbacks and steep grades where the ice cleats and studded boots came in handy. It would have been quite unsafe without them.

At about 3.2 km, on a bit of level, just before a viewpoint, mounted high up on a large evergreen on the left, a sign points out the trail, on the right, to the falls. In less than 10 minutes and several windfalls, we reached the falls, “frozen in time”. No wonder the little ravine below was dry. No water was coming over the falls but there were profuse amounts of icicles and ice bulges from bottom to top of this 100-foot column of solid, white ice.

Holly Falls, without falling water, was magnificent! It may stay that way for a short time of near freezing temperatures.

Our health-care system is reeling from the cost of treating illness that could be avoided by eating healthy foods in reasonable quantities. We have blamed the food, used chemicals to remove calories, fat and sugar.

We have blamed ourselves for not being weak or not exercising more. But food and lifestyle are not the problem. The problem lies in our minds. It lies in our inability to accurately read the messages about hunger and satisfaction that come from our bodies. But when we incorporate mindful eating practices into daily life, we begin to respond to our natural desire for healthy foods. We know

But many of us have forgotten how to distinguish true physical hunger from boredom, loneliness or simply from taking a break from what we are doing, whether it’s playing the piano, gardening or working on the computer. Instead of sitting quietly or going for a walk, we head straight to the fridge to find something to eat, even though we are not hungry.

Recognizing hunger and then eating appropriately to satisfy that hunger is the first and most important practice of mindful eating.

Suggested practice: This week, before you eat anything, check in with your body. Are you physically hungry? What sensations in your body tell you that your hunger is real? Just pay attention, and then rate your hunger on a scale from one to 10. If you rate yourself below six, don’t eat yet.

sap is 104 C but here it may be two degrees cooler. It is a rule of thumb that you could get 10 gallons of sap per tap on a 12-inch tree over the six weeks of sap run. It is recommended that you don’t tap trees under 12 inches in diameter.

So with the sap heating up in a big pot on the kitchen stove, I watched things take shape. I brought it to a boil and then simmered it for about half an hour.

I’m sure that all the water that evaporates from the boiling sap would create a humidity problem in your home. Back east they make their syrup in outdoor “sugar shacks”.

They say you reduce it 40:1 but this looked more like 20:1, perhaps because I removed some ice from the top of the bucket or

perhaps just because it was thick sap to start. It turned out to be very clear, much lighter in color than the “pure maple syrup” I had bought at the farmers’ market back east last fall. Factors that affect the color of the syrup are the species of maple that the sap is from and the temperature that it was cooked down at. Sugar maples have the most sugar in their sap, at about two per cent, with red maples following close behind.

We sell quite a few red maples for their fall color but not so many sugar maples, for whatever reason. They have a brilliant orangey-yellow fall color, which is quite nice. Not a bad way to pass the winter away.

Plaine is an acoustic-guitar playing, storytelling vocalist whose debut full-length album, Notes From A Waitress, reached #3 on the Earshot national jazz chart.

She describes the album she recorded at Edmontone Studios along with several fellow Grant MacEwan alumni, “I wanted the songs to read as a travelogue from the other side of the world and back. They’re like souvenirs from each journey.

It’s my throwback to the vocal jazz of the 1960s. Think of Peggy Lee and Julie London. I created Notes From A Waitress in the spirit of these artists.”

The success of this album, combined with an assertive touring scheduling has caught the attention of Canadian fans and music industry alike.

CRESTON DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB

The Creston Duplicate Bridge Club celebrated its 50th anniversary on Oct. 18. A potluck luncheon was attended by 39 guests, followed by seven tables playing individual rounds.

The club offers the community the opportunity to play at Rotacrest Hall five days a week. The dedication and commitment of many special individuals in the club has been pivotal in keeping the club active and vital throughout the years. Bridge lessons to novice and experienced players have been offered through community programs and the club. Many members have become directors and actively share the weekly responsibility of directing and organizing the weekly games.

The Creston Duplicate Bridge Club warmly welcomes guests and new members. All are looking forward to its next 50 years.

Lyle M. Wakelin was born February 24, 1950 in Saskatoon, SK. At the age of two he was a passenger on a freighter out of New York bound for Venezuela with his Christian missionary parents. Lyle spent most of his youth there, and returned to Canada in 1967 where he Ànished high sFhool, and was baptized in Salem ChurFh, Waldheim, Sask. Lyle attended 7rinity College in 'eerÀeld, ,llinois, maMoring in history, and then a year of uniYersity in %arFelona, Spain. While there he traYeled (urope on his 7riumph motorFyFle. Lyle moved to Lethbridge, AB in 1971 where he spent the next 30 years. He married Debby Mehrer of Creston in 19 3, divorFing in 1992, and had two Fhildren. While in Lethbridge he worked in various FonstruFtion trades inFluding on gas pipelines, self employment building grain bins, and lastly ammonite Mewelry fabriFation.

Lyle always loved the mountains and wanted to move to British Columbia. He Ànally got the FhanFe in 2002 when he moved to Gray Creek, and for 10 years worked in Gray Creek at 7he Lakeview in the post ofÀFe, store, Fampground and marina.

Lyle was a stoiF, private, and gentle man, with a wry sense of humor. He was a loving and nurturing father, had many friends both in Lethbridge and the Kootenays, and was always ready with praFtiFal help for friends and family. He played trumpet in his youth and developed a love of musiF, resulting in an extensive FolleFtion of roFk and roll. He loved skiing, mostly at WestFastle and Fernie, hunting in the Alberta foothills, and Fanoeing.

Lyle’s health substantially deteriorated in the last 15 years when he had FhroniF baFk pain, and most reFently an illness diagnosed too late. He passed away unexpeFtedly on February 15, 2013.

We are stunned that he is gone. He touFhed many people, and he will be in our hearts forever.

He is survived by his mother and father BruFe and Nina Wakelin of Abbotsford, BC; son Laine Wakelin in Lethbridge, AB; daughter ,lea Wakelin in VanFouver, BC; sisters Lois in Gray Creek, BC and Elaine in BakersÀeld, CA; brother Dennis and wife -aFki, and two nieFes, 5aFhel and Sarah in Hauser, ,daho.

Lyle is buried in the Gray Creek Cemetery close to his home.

The Memorial Service was held February 22, 2013 at Gray Creek Hall.

This new mine is scheduled to come into production in the second half of 2013 and the project team has recently surpassed 3.8 million hours without a lost time incident. If you are interested in joining a safety-first culture, we are currently looking for talented people to join our team in the following areas: Finance and Administration Manager - responsible for the accounting functions for the operation and have a month end reporting responsibility to the Denver head office. Must have their accounting designation and should have 5-10 years accounting experience at a high level and preferably mining or related heavy industry experience The position is an onsite position, 5X2 schedule 8 hours per day.

(2) Senior Accountants - responsible for accounts payable, monthly reporting systems, preparation of monthly financial statements and coordination and preparation of year end audit files. Must have a minimum of (3) years and have or working towards their professional designations.

Variety, they say, is the spice of life. Which means that Joe Guy’s life must be well-seasoned — his resume includes musician, author and horseman.

And he’s ready to tell stories about it all, offering a show featuring music and stories at Renée’s Roadhouse Diner tomorrow and Saturday.

“The show is based around trying to inspire people,” said the Australian. “It’s all about find-

“Before I knew it, I was putting on clinics with 10 horses,” he said.

“I write about what I do, so I try to keep it as real as possible,” he said.

Robot and Frank comes to Creston FRIENDS OF THE CINEMA

One of the movie world’s great character actors, Frank Langella, gets a rare star turn, playing a retired cat burglar in Robot and Frank, Friends of the Cinema’s March film presentation.

Robot? Frank’s two adult children are concerned that their dad shouldn’t be living on his own. A nursing home seems to be the best option until Frank’s son gets a different idea. He purchases a walking, talking and eerily human-like robot to become his dad’s physical and mental companion.

Even at his advanced age, Frank is drawn to larceny and he finds

Robot to be just the accomplice he needs.

“The pair’s low-key crime spree provides some gentle suspense, but it’s the developing friendship between the grouchy ex-thief and the robot that will beguile viewers most,” writes Movie Talk’s Jason Best.

This unlikely pairing is sure to provide gentle amusement and laughter to a Creston audience.

Robot and Frank runs on March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Prince Charles Theatre.

Victoria Bowns wins Creston’s Best Singer contest

It took three tries, but Victoria Bowns finally made it to the top, being named the winner of Creston’s Best Singer on March 7, with Ben Lansing and Marybeth Stenhouse placing just behind her.

It was Bowns’ third time in the contest, having competed in the 2011 and 2012 editions, and making it to third place last year.

“It’s the cherry on top of the cake,” the 16-year-old said.

But that cake is about to get a bit bigger for her. The Creston win means she will compete in the regional Kootenays’ Best Singer contest in June, going up against the top two winners of contests in Nelson and Grand Forks, as well as the winners of

upcoming Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Trail and Castlegar contests.

Lansing, who earned second place for his baritone renditions of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire and Josh Turner’s Your Man, will join her at the regionals. And if either of them is unable to attend, the third-place Stenhouse, who sang Put Your Records On and Mercy, will take their place.

Ten singers competed in the final round, cut down from 20 three weeks earlier. Matt Hansen — first in Creston and second in the Kootenays last year — Erin Collison, Taya Blackmore, Nora Blackmore, Lexi Ducharme, Sierra Blackmore and Teresa Rohbock also competed, giving Bowns a run for her money.

“There were so many good people,” she said.

The singers, who received votes from the audience in the previous three rounds in January and February, were judged by Cranbrook’s Robyn Graham and Rachel Willisson, along with Trena Speers, who won the regional contest last June, and performed a song written by contest producer Vern Gorham for the Creston audience.

Bowns said she’s been singing since she could talk, and began writing her own music at 13. In addition to covering Alicia Keyes’ If I Ain’t Got You, she also sang Time, a song she wrote that showcased her vocal range and style.

“I always worry about things,” she said about writing the song. “I thought, if I think positively and take the time to enjoy everything, I’ll find out where I want to go.”
