A heads up on crime

What does ‘blue’ taste like?

Eamon Pigeon, a Grade 7 student at Cloverdale’s Don Christian Elementary, was one of 260 students at last week’s district science fair. His project looked at whether the colour of a liquid can influence its taste, so he blindfolded his subjects and had them taste liquids of various colours. His conclusion? Yes, colour does influence taste. More than 150 gold ribbons were awarded at the event.
By Jennifer Lang Shoplifters, fraud artists, thieves and drug dealers operating in the historic Cloverdale town centre are being put on notice. A new anti-crime initiative is being launched in Cloverdale, where the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce are asking local merchants to report any suspicious activity as part of a business alert program being set up. For now, the Heads Up! initiative will be restricted to the 200-plus members of the Cloverdale BIA, but it’s hoped it will expand to the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce’s membership, which represents a larger geographic area. On April 2, the business community is invited to an open house at the Surrey RCMP’s District 4 office from 8 to 9 a.m. to find out more about Heads Up! and other ways to help reduce property
crime and criminal activity. “We were finding that we had to spend much more time dealing with police matters,” Cloverdale BIA executive director Paul Orazietti explained. “It is a critical part of our job to make sure things are safe, and look safe, and are clean.” The aim of Heads Up! is to spread word of suspicious or criminal activity in a timely manner, giving neighbouring businesses fair warning through email alerts. Tips would be sent in by email to the Cloverdale BIA and to Staff Sgt. Martin Blais, commander of the Surrey RCMP’s district 4 office serving Cloverdale/Port Kells. Alerts to neighbouring businesses would then be sent out warning of suspicious individuals operating in the area or incidents such as thefts. The initiative is a response to long-

Stars pouring into the kitchen with Cloverdale TV host By Kristine Salzmann Celebrities, chefs and charitable endeavors all share the spotlight in Laurie Belle’s Get Cooking with the Stars. Belle, who has recently moved to Cloverdale from Langley, is host and producer of the show which is entering its second season this year (on Shaw TV 4 and Novus). The idea for Get Cooking with the Stars came about while dining at Tojo’s Restaurant in Vancouver, home to renowned sushi chef Hidekazu Tojo (the inventor of the California roll).
When Tojo mentioned Kiss frontman and reality TV star Gene Simmons would be visiting, Belle – an entertainment reporter who has covered red carpet events such as the Leo Awards, Vancouver Fashion Week and Vancouver International Film Festival – saw an opportunity to pair culinary adventures with celebrity interviews. “It [being in a restaurant] is a fun and easygoing atmosphere to indulge your guests,” Belle says. “Where do you find people are most comfortable chatting about different things? It’s in
the kitchen!” Tojo’s has since hosted Belle and a number of her guests, as has La Terrazza, Pink Elephant Thai and EBO Restaurant, among others. In addition to Simmons, guests who have dined with Belle include CFL star receiver Geroy Simon, actor David Richmond-Peck (Lost Girl), comedian Darryl Lenox, and sci-fi actress Amanda Tapping (Random Acts of Romance, Sanctuary). “All the celebrity guests and the chefs are amazing,” Belle says. “How See RESTAURANT / Page 3
