Mill looks for subsidy compromise BUDGET 2013: | City councillor asks logging companies for donations in exchange for tax deduction so McLean Mill can sell cut lumber.

If McLean Mill National Historic Site’s steam sawmill was busier, the city wouldn’t have to subsidize it so much, says Coun. Jack McLeman.

McLeman is calling on Vancouver Island-based logging companies to donate more logs to the mill.

Councillors passed a motion at the Feb. 27 budget meeting seeking donations of logs to boost lumber sales at the mill.

According to McLeman, Western Forest Products donated some logs in 2012 and the results were good for the mill.

“We got wood to use on the site. It helped repair the fish ladder.

And we got to sell some of it, so I’d say this worked well for the mill,” McLeman said.

The plan has a downside, he admitted. For starters, the mill is old and it can’t run fast. It can only run for three hours a day without a heavier maintenance schedule. And the wood would have to

Most of the orders are cut during summer tourist demonstrations, but there is room to increase production a little, McLeman said.

The mill received a national historic site designation from Parks Canada more than a decade ago. As a result of the designation, the city and federal government signed a 42-year agreement involving the mill, city manager Ken Watson said.

The agreement called for the feds to contribute $2 million with matching provincial funds for capital improvement to the mill.

Western Forest Products isn’t the only group who have donated logs; others such as Probyn Logging and outside private groups have in the past as well.

McLeman wants to solicit donations from other groups, asking the city to issue a tax receipt in return.

The mill’s total budget for this year is $500,000. Mill manager

Neil Malbon said the tourism-based operation is projected to generate $250,000 to $255,000 in revenue this year, and officials have asked for a $249,000 subsidy.

“Just over 50 per cent out of what we spend in our budget we generate ourselves,” Malbon said.

According to McLeman, the mill sold $20,000 of lumber last year. “If other outfits donated to us and we could get that up by two to three

times then we’d need less subsidy from the city,” he said.

The goal is to cut back the subsidy to zero; but in order to do that the mill must become economically self-sufficient, McLeman said.

The mill is an integral part of the community and worth the investment, Alberni Valley Museum director Jean McIntosh said.

“It’s a historical mark and a commemorative location. It’s a representation of a mill of a certain era in our heritage,” McIntosh said.

The mill is a social, technological and commercial example of the way people lived in the Valley then and that’s important, she said.

“It’s part of the community’s original fabric and it still resides at the site.”

Forestry is the foundation the city was built on, she added. “It’s the original essence of economic development in the community.”

The Anderson mill that was built in 1860

at the foot of what is now Argyle Street was the first sawmill built in B.C. The London, Englandbased company brought in workers and supplies for the mill, and this spawned the beginning of a settlement that eventually grew out around it to become Port Alberni.

“That is something to honour and is hugely important,” McIntosh said.

R.B. McLean built McLean Mill and operated it with his three sons between 1926-65. Some of the original buildings are still standing.

The mill is a cultural investment in the Valley, McIntosh said.

It showcases who we are. Gives a glimpse at the Valley’s past and present. And promotes the Valley’s uniqueness as a community, she said.

“It also gives our children a sense of where it is they come from and what their roots are,” McIntosh said.

“That’s what we invest in when we invest in culture.”

Second youth pleads guilty in 2012 beating WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

T

he second of three people involved in a beating that left a Port Alberni fisherman with a broken leg last summer has been sentenced.

The youth, who was 17 at the time of the offense and cannot be named, pleaded guilty to common assault in Port Alberni Provincial Court on March 8. Judge Rod Sutton netted out one year’s probation and a no contact order with the victim, Bert McCarthy, 41.

“There will be discussion with Nuuchah-nulth Tribal

Council officials about his probation and where it will be completed,” Crown prosecutor Christina Proteau said.

The youth was originally charged with assault causing bodily harm but pleaded guilty to a lesser offense on March 8.

“It was difficult to determine at what point the injury happened and who caused it,” Proteau said.

On May 12, 2012, McCarthy was swarmed by four men and assaulted outside of the Petro-Canada gas station on River Road.

injuries and one leg that was broken in several places.

The four men fled but police later tracked them down.

Three of the men — one adult and two youths — were charged.

The fourth man, whose name wasn’t made public, wasn’t charged.

The first youth who was involved in the incident also pleaded guilty to common assault and was sentenced to probation in January.

Centennial leaves legacies WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Port Alberni’s centennial left lasting legacies, organizer Ken Rutherford said.

Rutherford gave a wrap-up of Centennial activities to Port Alberni city council at their March 11 meeting.

Centennial events were held over the

course of 2012 and January 2013.

Legacies that were left as a result of those events included a year-long museum exhibit, banners depicting early pioneers, the carved wooden bear at Victoria Quay, a carved stone wishing well and a special DVD, Rutherford said.

A scrapbook was compiled that will

serve as a written record of the centennial, he said.

And a centennial garden done in conjunction with the Port Alberni Women’s Business Network is planned for part of the grounds at city hall, he added.

The centennial was made possible through $230,000 in federal and provincial grants, as well as

through business contributions.

A final accounting of funds will take place later this month.

Rutherford said he hoped any leftover funds could be used to continue the heritage marker program, as well as to serve as a small legacy fund for future endeavours, he said.

Road check uncovers violators

A multi-force operation conducted in Cathedral Grove on Feb. 25 produced 47 violation tickets, says RCMP Cpl. Mike Elston.

The operation was conducted

by RCMP traffic services departments, Ministry of Forests officers, a provincial commercial vehicle

inspector and Industry Canada inspectors, Elston said.

More than 2,000 vehicles were checked over six hours, he said. Violations included speeding, drivers licences, seatbelts, vehicle defects and one prohibited driver was taken off the road and

the car impounded.

Industry Canada officers did radio checks on 10 vehicles and found all of them to be non-compliant with federal radio regulations.

Forestry officers checked 14 logging trucks and found three non-compliant with regulations.

Relay for Life needs volunteers Melissa Bigmore has taken on the task of organizing the 2013 Port Alberni Relay for Life, a 12-hour, overnight community event that raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

This year’s event will take place from 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 to 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, at Bob Dailey Stadium.

Those interested in participating as teams or seeking a team can register online or head down to the Canadian Cancer Society unit office located at 3030 B Third Ave. and ask about registration.

Bigmore has been involved in the relay for several years in different capacities, from a team member to staff coordinator, since her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007.

Two young innovators from Port Alberni have been named to Vancouver Island’s Top 20 Under 40.

Britt Coulson is manager at Coulson Aircrane, and at 26 years old he is dealing with an international clientele.

At 25, the youngest winner, Sharie Marie Minions manages a dozen brokers with The Mortgage Group, runs an online baby clothing company called Little Minions with her husband and is mother to an 18-month-old daughter.

“It’s very exciting as a young person in business,” Minions said. “It feels good to be recognized for what

Chamber’s point man retires WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON

lberni Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director Mike Carter fell in love with Barkley Sound when he first came to the Alberni Valley and that’s exactly where he plans to spend more time now.

Carter is retiring on Friday after eight years with the chamber.

“I’m going to spend more time in the Barkley Sound, renovate our house and I plan to be seen more often at the golf course,” Carter said.

The retirement caps off a working career in Port Alberni that has lasted more than 40 years.

The married father of two was born in March 1948 in Richmond-Steveston where he grew up and went to school.

Carter had one brother, who has since passed away and he credits him with being his role model while growing up.

Port Alberni Chamber of Commerce executive director Mike Carter says that he’ll be able to bear retirement just fine. Carter, who has called the Valley home since 1972, is retiring from his position at the chamber after eight years.

“He was a bull of a man who had a big heart and was deadly honest,” Carter said, He cites PE as his favourite course in high school but had other ideas about his educational goals. “I wanted to be a nuclear physicist; at least that’s why my mother told me to say,” Carter said.

He wasn’t far off the mark as he went to the University of B.C. starting in

1966 and eventually earned credentials in math and physics.

Carter could perform complicated equations but he also listened to Vancouver radio religiously, and really wanted to be a radio announcer.

He went to the Shuswap after university for 10 months. “I think I heard the worst radio I ever heard then,” Carter said. “I still remember it: ‘You’re

listening to CKXR, the first voice west of the Rockies.’”

Carter left the Shuswap and went back to the Lower Mainland where he enrolled in the broadcast journalism program at BCIT. He got a job with CJAV in Port Alberni 1972 and arrived in the Valley during what was a different time. “This was a happening place and it was really a beehive

Pulling together the chamber’s “yellow jacket” ambassadors program was a win, Carter said. But the accomplishment that most stands out is the building of the new visitor centre, which opened two years ago.

“A lot of sweat equity went into raising $1.5 million. But we accomplished that and got it done.” Carter said.

Carter is leaving the chamber but is staying on with the Maritime Heritage Society, and is helping with the Russian hockey team that is coming for a challenge game in early April.

And the first day of his retirement? “I’m going to head down to Harbour Quay and buy veggies for the week then get to ripping the carpet up at home,” Carter said.

“We also have a float home down the canal and I plan to spend more time there.”

moment that I never wanted to leave,” he said.

“I swore I would spend as much time there as I could.”

Carter split his time between the radio station and the lab at the paper mill. He also worked as a commercial fisherman, which comes as no surprise considering his favourite movie was The Old Man And The Sea. He left radio for good in 1986 and worked for the city for 10 years as the manager of Alberni Harbour Quay.

Carter sat as a director on the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce while quay manager, and he was later recruited to become its manager in 2005.

“It was a good fit because I worked with other organizations and directors before, and I’m a people person,” Carter said.

Public trust: it still matters The ethnic vote scandal plaguing the governing B.C. Liberal government proved one thing. B.C. voters still care about government and the political system.

The B.C. Liberals were caught redhanded trying to score ‘quick wins’ in the upcoming election by apologizing to ethnic groups for past wrongs, such as the Chinese head tax.

Special exception was taken with the plan in the memo, which was leaked by the NDP, to use government resources to achieve these ends.

It’s not a new tactic in politics to try to capture votes through announcement of special projects paid for with tax dollars.

The B.C. Liberals themselves made fun of the previous NDP government for shovelling money off the back of a truck into the lead-up to an election.

So why are people getting so bent out of shape over this latest example of pandering to the electorate? Even though everyone is doing it, it doesn’t make it right.

Despite the cynicism in today’s society and the lack of faith in the system often voiced by voters, people still care about this province and its elected leaders.

People still care whether they are misled.

They care where their tax dollars are spent. And there is still an expectation, no matter how naive, that people elected to positions of power act with integrity.

When they don’t, when politicians fail to uphold the trust the people give to them, B.C. voters react swiftly and decisively to remove them from office.

Despite B.C.’s reputation as political blood sport, the province includes countless examples of selfless people who dedicated their lives to public service.

The ethnic vote scandal might show that we often get less than we ask for from politicians. That doesn’t mean we quit demanding excellence.

ICTORIA – The B.C. legislature session ends this week. It can’t come quickly enough for Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals.

This is also the week we see the rest of the fallout from “ethnic-gate,” as the latest controversy over partisan activity by political staff has been clumsily labelled.

A disgruntled former B.C. Liberal caucus staffer handed the NDP opposition an internal memo setting out a strategy for ethnic “outreach” that strayed into forbidden territory, suggesting that ethnicfriendly government events could be staged and participants’ names collected and turned over to the party.

“This secret plan clearly demonstrates the Liberals are deliberately folding government resources and

staff into their party’s campaign machinery, despite rules that forbid this,” thundered NDP house leader John Horgan.

“We’ve seen this before, with the Liberals’ efforts to run a secret committee to subvert the public process around Burnaby Hospital, and in the attack website created by caucus staff and launched by the Liberal party.”

Casual observers might see this as a disturbing new development in misuse of public resources.

It’s disturbing, all right, but it’s hardly new.

The “attack website” Horgan refers to is a case in point.

While a website targeting NDP leader Adrian Dix was being cooked up in the B.C. Liberal bunker, a similar effort was being developed in NDP research down the hall.

This partisan message

detailed all the worthwhile things that could be done with the government’s $15 million advertising budget singing the praises of the government’s “jobs plan.”

But this one carried the logo of the NDP caucus, so it was within the rules.

The average person, seeing two groups of staff on the public payroll, each slagging the other, might not detect much of a difference.

The biggest headline from the leaked memo was its reference to generating “quick wins” for the election campaign by staging apologies for historic racial injustices.

It mentioned how former premier Gordon Campbell delivered a solemn apology in 2008 for the decision to turn away a ship carrying Sikh refugees from Vancouver harbour – shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. What does a modern provincial premier

Why would another premier now feel the need to apologize for a federal “head tax” imposed on Chinese immigrants from 1885 to 1923?

The answer is obvious.

Again, don’t expect much to change with an NDP government.

Asked last week if he would stage an apology for the head tax, Dix delivered a well-rehearsed history lesson that made it clear he is anxious to do so.

It’s more important to put on a show than to do the right thing.

Hospitals are announced three times before they’re built, then announced again when they are staffed.

Politics is a lucrative career.

Former B.C. Liberal MLA Lorne Mayencourt is one of the additional “outreach” staff handpicked by Clark.

Vote pandering is old schtick

Yiu is running for a fourth time in VancouverFraserview, having been defeated in 2009 by former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed.

That campaign was notorious for anonymous Chineselanguage pamphlets

claiming the NDP favours legalizing drugs and imposing a “death tax” on inheritance.

This latest scandal might produce meaningful reform.

But the misuse of public money to further the interests of political parties is deeply entrenched.

Mailbag: Feedback on news items Polio fight needs resources To the Editor, The number of global polio cases has declined to 200, after decades of effort by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

Canada was the first country to fund the GPEI, and has long been on the forefront of the battle to eradicate polio.

We are now a stone’s throw away from finishing this terrible crippler of children, but the program is under assault from Islamic extremists, and our own Conservative government.

Just recently, nine volunteers immunizing children against polio were murdered in Nigeria.

These courageous people knew that unless the disease is stopped now, it could erupt again and become the horrible plague it once was.

Sadly, the safety off all such volunteers is at risk.

Funding for polio eradication has rapidly declined, with the Harper government planning to slash funding from $35 million to $5 million by next year.

Money is needed

not just for vaccines, but to provide armed protection for these workers.

People are putting their lives at risk in their efforts to rid the world of this scourge.

The least we can do is support them with funding to allow them to complete their work.

Minister denies strategy link To the Editor, Re: MLA probes ethnic outreach strategy–Hesquiaht apology link, www. albernivalleynews. com, March 7.

On Nov. 17, 2012, a feast was held in Port Alberni that represented a significant step in healing the relationship between the Hesquiaht First Nation and British Columbia.

Our acknowledgement of the pain of those involved in the tragedy that took place in 1869 was both respectful and sincere.

The desire for reconciliation originated with the community, took place in the community and culminated with the community inviting me to the emotional

healing ceremony, at which some 400 Hesquiaht people celebrated our mutual respect.

In my response to this newspaper’s inquiry on March 6, concerning the Hesquiaht acknowledgement, I was clear that my ministry’s approach to respectfully acknowledge the pain of the Hesquiaht Nation began in earnest in 2010.

The development of such reconciliation for a historic wrong requires considerable reflection, analysis and discussion.

I believe every government must be alive to these historic issues, and must be ready to discuss and to pursue thoughtful actions that can demonstrate our attentiveness and our concern.

I am frankly deeply disturbed by the effort to try to undermine the importance and meaning of what for me personally, for my government and – I believe – most of all, for the Hesquiaht Nation, was a profound, sincere and moving experience.

Irish gave more than Guinness To the editor, As we move towards the eve of St. Patrick’s Day it would not be amiss to consider the legacies of Ireland and its contribution to civilization.

To many in North America, the Irish are portrayed as a “fighting” race.

This perception is well short of being accurate.

For millennia the Irish have cherished freedom. In ancient Rome Agricola, their famous general, advised his emperor to “war down and take possession of Ireland so that freedom might be put out of sight”.

Rome did not move, but almost a thousand years later the English did, and in 1147 c.e. they laid down their heavy hand, the weight of which is still felt.

Generally speaking, it is not in the Irish fibre to back away in the face of adversity, but it must also be said that Ireland, as a nation, has never, in recorded history, attacked another nation.

The Irish have held “law” in great reverence; words like hungerstrike, lynchlaw, and boycott

are in common usage throughout the world, but they do not reflect the purity of practice they once held.

Hungerstrike. The process known as truscead (fasting upon him) allowed a plaintiff to set his mat at the door to the house of a defendant and remain there fasting until the complaint was settled.

Boycott. The 1800’s in Ireland spawned many movements that strove to lift the oppressive hand of British Rule.

One such movement was the Land League, which used as its modus operandi the act of boycott.

Captain Boycott was a former British Army officer who acted as Land Agent for absentee landlords.

The modern ‘travelling people’ are descendents of those dispossessed farmers.

In modern times, the acts of hungerstrike and boycott have been trifled with, and their values debased.

And so, as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, it would be well to remember that Ireland has contributed something more than Shamrocks an Guinness.

Fugitive back to Alberta An Alberta man facing sex charges in Alberta has been apprehended in Port Alberni.

RCMP Police arrested Sean Roney, 28, in Port Alberni on Feb. 19.

Roney was arrested on outstanding warrants from Strathmore, Alta. for

two counts of sexual assault and five counts of breach of probation.

Roney had come in to the Port Alberni RCMP detachment to inquire about another matter, RCMP Cpl. Colin Banks said.

Court ruling changes civic conflict guidelines WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni’s civic governments are dealing with a BC Court of Appeal decision regarding civic officials’ conflict of interest guidelines.

On Jan. 13, appeal court overturned a ruling in the Schlenker v.

Torgrimson Supreme Court case. The courts deemed that two elected officials on Salt Spring Island illegally cast votes to provide money to nonprofit organizations which they were directors of.

Conflict of interest is now considered pecuniary, or involving money, the judgment noted. As long as the matter involves giving public funds and the respondents have an interest then it makes

no difference that they didn’t benefit.

A February report from the Union of B.C. Municipalities noted that “...the court decision could mean that elected officials will no longer be able to participate in nonprofit societies that receive money from local government,” the report showed. “... the elected officials could be disqualified from office if they vote on matters that would benefit the society financially, even if there is no personal financial benefit to them.”

The development has been on the radar of Port Alberni city council through legal bulletins and notices, and council has taken steps to deal with it, city manager Ken Watson said.

Several councillors sit on various organizations. Mayor

John Douglas: Port Alberni Twinning Society; Hira Chopra: Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce.

But in advance of this issue, those appointments are now in liaison, non-voting capacities negating a conflict, Watson said.

The AlberniClayoquot Regional District is wrestling with the issue as well.

Regional district CAO Russell Dyson circulated a report about the matter to directors before their March 13 meeting.

“Public officials, such as directors who are active in their community are likely to face many conflict of interest situations,” Dyson wrote. “It is important therefore that conflicts be recognized quickly and handled appropriately.”

Situations such as a re-zoning decision that impacts a director’s land value, or a decision that benefits a director’s family, associates or organization they belong to can constitute a conflict, Dyson wrote. But the rule does not apply to interests that are held in common with the community, he noted.

ACRD officials are given a conflict of interest orientation, and directors review through the Union of BC Municipalities.

But the ACRD’s policy with respect to directors’ appointments to other groups isn’t as cut and dried as the city, Dyson said.

“They’ve (city) taken the lead with liaison appointments only.

We haven’t taken that approach,” he said.

Bamfield. We lined up with about 100 people to board the Frances Barkley, most of them carrying big expensive Canon and Nikon cameras with long telephoto lenses and tripods. I had my trusty Nikon D300 S equipped with an 18-70 mm lens, and in my pocket I had a Tamron 2X converter that I thought I would slip on if I needed a longer 140 mm lens.

Using the 2X converter on my 18-70 mm lens, I would lose two f-stops: therefore the aperture would change from f4.0 to f8. To make up for losing the two f-stops I boosted the ISO up to 800 from 200.

Off we went, me with my camera and lens combination that is easy to shoot.Using the wide-angle lens I could shoot people on board and interesting situations in the restaurant downstairs while the other photographers could not because of their long lens.

Tourist ideas tough in winter From / 14 The next day we took my touristas down to Harbour Quay to admire the scenery, and the new breakwater pier. Later in the day we went out to Coulson Flying Tankers, home of the Martin Mars water bombers, where we saw signs proclaiming no admittance, no visiting, no touristas, verboten. However the gate was open so we just went in, strolled around and took photos of these gigantic, wonderful flying machines.

Once again my wideangle lens serve me in good stead as I went around taking photos

in tight places.

There were no other places for tourists to look at or enjoy in Port Alberni: Naesgaard’s Farm Market was closed, the steam mill was closed, there was no train—so we took them to Nanaimo to the Crow & Gate Pub to have a typical English pub lunch.

A few days later we went to Qualicum Beach where we had a great time strolling on the beach even though a light rain was falling.

Back to the main drag walking up and down looking at the stores followed by another wonderful

lunch, this time at Gary’s Bistro.

What happened to the hundred or so tourists that were on the boat with us: where did they go afterwards? With nothing open for tourists, Port Alberni was the loser that time.

Youth group lends a hand to Bread of Life The Alberni Valley United Youth Group, H2O Helping Hands was formed in September 2012.

During the first meeting, the group put together a list of ideas they wanted to accomplish by June

T

he part of the season that the Alberni Valley Bulldogs players—and their fans—live for is finally here.

The Bulldogs square off in Nanaimo against the Clippers this weekend in the first two of five games in the opening round of the B.C. Hockey League Coastal Conference playoffs.

“Whichever team’s best players play like the best players is going to be successful,” Bulldogs head coach Kevin Willison said.

“We have to get the greasy goals and get inside their house and bang away at the goal.”

The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a pair of wins, including a 5-4 overtime victory over the Clippers on the road.

Their final game was a 6-4 win over the Victoria Grizzlies on

Sunday.

The Bulldogs had 19 shots on goal compared to Victoria’s 30. And they were sharp with the man advantage, going five for six on the power play.

Willison said the Bulldogs played to their strengths against the Grizzlies: speed, skating and attacking the net, all of which are ingredients needed to take it all against Nanaimo.

But the players also displayed toughness, a quality not found on the scoresheet, but one that will be important in the postseason, he added.

Ryan Lough took a shot to the head from Grizzlies’ Blake Thompson in the first period then scored on the subsequent power play.

“Our physical players stepped up but (Lough) didn’t back down. That’s what it takes.”

“We’ve let our foot off the gas and let other teams back in it, and that can’t happen,” Willison said.

“We have to shut them down every shift after a goal and keep momentum.”

Alberni bested Nanaimo in five of eight games in the regular season, and the teams have gone 2-2 in their last four outings.

Nanaimo matches well with size but Alberni has an edge in speed, he said.

B Midgets compete in Lillooet The Midget B Bulldogs are primed and ready for this weekend’s provincial championship—only this one is being held out of town.

The eight-team Midget Tier 4 tourney is being held in Lillooet from March 17–22. Port Alberni is the only team competing from Vancouver Island.

(The midget A team is hosting the Tier 3 championships at the AV Multiplex during the same week.)

Other teams competing include Windermere, Chetwynd, Cranbrook, Semiahmoo, Whitehorse (Yukon), Kelowna and Burns Lake.

so the Bulldogs don’t know who they’re facing yet, head coach Charles McDonald said.

Semiahmoo is fielding strong teams but McDonald says he knows little about

Alberni has speed and size and can match up well with anyone, McDonald said. Forward Matt McLeod will be counted on for faceoff wins and power play defense. Gary Matin and Klaus Diaz will be looked to for major contributions as well, McDonald said.

It’s the first time some players on the team will be attending a tourney of this magnitude — a B.C. championship — and McDonald is clear about what it’s going to take to win.

Deo has been stellar all year, turning away a total of 101 shots from Nanaimo in his last three tilts.

The Bulldogs’ top two lines will be counted on for scoring, but secondary scoring will also be needed from the blue-line, Willison said.

Special teams are going to be huge in the playoffs, he added.

The Bulldogs have to do a better job killing penalties than they have, but at the same time have the discipline to not draw any needless penalties of their own.

“We can’t afford any cheap stick penalties. We have to be disciplined and have to stay out of the box.”

The intensity of the first shift of the first game at Frank Crane Arena on Friday is going to register on the Richter Scale, Willison said.

The Port Alberni Black Sheep Div. 1 men’s rugby team were on the losing end of a 14-10 score to Castaway Wanderers on their home pitch, Saturday.

Todd Daradics scored a penalty goal and a conversion, while Jack Rokotuiwakaya had a try for the Black Sheep.

The game was halted at one point when a Castaway player was smacked in the forehead and experienced tingling in his fingers. An ambulance was called and he was transported to West Coast General Hospital as a precaution.

Games on tap The Div. 1 Black Sheep men are on the road this weekend in Cowichan but return home Saturday, March 23 for a 1 p.m. tilt against the Velox Valhallians. Then at 2:30 p.m. the Comox Valley Kickers play the Velox Academy team, also here in Port Alberni.

Husband and wife photographers Ati and Orsi Gereb have combined their love of photography and travelling to mount the exhibit “Women and Children From Around the World” at the Rollin Art Centre this month.

“I have been using photography as a note-taking tool and substitute for journal writing for some time,” Ati Gereb writes.

In 2009 he embarked on a journey around the world, crossing 25 countries in just under a year. It was while mounting an exhibit of his work in his home country of TransylvaniaRomania that he met Orsi.
