The local branch of the club was founded

by Brian Scott, who now serves as the VP Education for the chapter.

Toastmasters provides a forum for members to improve their public speaking, confidence, leadership and critical thinking skills in a supportive and friendly environment, and Scott explained that it can have other benefits too.

“The communication and leadership skills I’ve

gained rank near the top for me,” said Scott of his Toastmasters experiences. “I’ve found that my confidence in front of an audience has improved a lot, but most important are the friends I’ve made in Port Hardy.”

Scott was a member of the Campbell River branch of the club before moving to the North Island and will be the only member with prior competition experience.

“Personally, it is a competition with myself,” he explained.

“I’ve found that the biggest steps in my speaking skills have come from preparing for competitions. I like the excitement of these events too. It feels official and there are tangible results for the winners since they move onto the next round of competitions.

competitions it always feels like you are a winner.”

Scott explained that, while the speeches at regular meetings offer a chance for members to improve their skills, the annual competition often drives huge jumps in individual ability.

“Competitions can be a major opportunity for growth in public speaking skills,” said Scott.

The free event will take place in Port Hardy’s North Island College on March 16 from 1-4 p.m. and refreshments will be provided.

PORT HARDY— Some of the North Island’s most talented speakers will get a chance to prove their mettle this weekend as the local chapter of Toastmasters hosts its inaugural club speech competition and charter party in Port Hardy.

A selection of the recently formed club’s members will give a short speech, with the highest-scoring speaker progressing to represent the club at the next tier of the competition.

After club, area, division and district finals, the finest speakers move on to the organization’s international finals, to be held this year in Cincinnati.

COURTENAY — Dale Rouleau can turn an ugly piece of wood into an attractive work of art.

Which is exactly what he did with a

chunk of wood from a big old maple that had been felled in Courtenay.

“It’s some of the most amazing wood I’ve ever seen, and it was just the ugliest-looking tree,” said Rouleau,

an accomplished woodturner who owns Artisan Wood to Works in Courtenay.

The business/ shop was established as a service to wood carvers, woodturners and luthiers. It supplies tools and wood to

Rouleau serves customers from around Vancouver Island and from out of province.

“This is a retiree’s kind of thing,” he said, noting pensioners locally and in the Parksville/Qualicum Beach area. “Most people doing this are picking it up as a hobby for something to do when they retire.

This is kind of a gold mine as far as that goes.”

He also sells art and teaches out of his shop on Cousins Road in Tin Town.

“My background is woodturning, so the business is evolving more in that direction,” said Rouleau, an artist in residence who sells or advises on everything he uses.

He finds material at

building sites and old logged areas. Before opening in Courtenay, Rouleau had run the business out of his Cumberland home for about 15 years, mostly wholesaling to galleries along with retail.

Rouleau is a oneman operation. Wood to Works is owned by Bow River Specialty Woods in Chilliwack, where he used to live and from where he purchased wood. The company decided to open a retail outlet on the Island, which is where Rouleau comes in.

“They trust me to advise them on tools.

I teach for them here, but by the same token I’m allowed to do my own artwork.”

Anglers who are getting out have moved their location from the Hump and Lighthouse to north of Browns Bay. Kris Salter had returned from a fishing trip on the Oyster River and the trout were sluggish and he had very little action. High elevation lakes are still snow covered along the shoreline.

Local pothole lakes can be a fun spot to enjoy a family outing fishing and spending a day at the lake. On a recent trip to Echo Lake a number of campers have left beer cans, dirty diapers and lawn chairs on the ground.

With the warmer weather comes a trek of fishermen who fish the local rivers for Steelhead, they have fished the pools for years and they know and keep secret their favorite fishing spots.

The Salmon River has had excellent water levels and clarity which could provide some great sport for anglers fishing the river. Fishing on the Oyster and Campbell rivers are fair to poor for fishing.

This time of year the trout fishing can be very good in certain spots.

A number of locals are vacationing in Mexico and Cuba and many have taken fishing gear to catch saltwater fish in the countries just mentioned. Ted Wild is fishing in Cuba and the fly patterns being used are being used here locally. y
