Funding for Hammond ball field $520,000 for drainage, fencing; no bleachers

It’s not a new stadium that will bring back the glory days of Maple Ridge baseball, but by next year the western field in Hammond will look a whole lot better than it does now.

With a federal grant of $187,500, and another $325,000 from the District of Maple Ridge, the field will get new drainage and grass, new back stop and a permanent outfield fence, meaning it can be used year-round for baseball.

The diamond will also will be re-oriented to the northwest for better vision.

“We’re really excited about the field.

It’s going to be awesome for us, having a facility that’s solely dedicated to baseball will make a huge difference in the development of our players and coaches,” said Gord Easton, midget commissioner with Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball.

Police have busted the same drug house on 223rd Street three times.

A rental property in Port Haney, managed by a councillor for the District of Maple Ridge, was raided by police Thursday for the third time in less than a year.

Five people were arrested at the heritage house on St. Anne’s Avenue, at 223rd Street, after police executed a search warrant.

One woman is facing a charge of drug trafficking.

Built in 1938 by Joseph Turnock, the Cape Cod style home is slowly being destroyed by tenants and their unwanted guests, lamented Coun. Al Hogarth, a realtor and property manager whose been trying to resolve problems there for the past nine months.

According to him, the tenants who rent the house have been intimidated by others who’ve turned it into a crack shack.

“We give notices and try to get rid of these folks, but they are not the easiest type to deal with,” he added.

The property has been a target Hogarth of Ridge Meadow RCMP since last June.

A search warrant application details how two anonymous informants tipped police off, leading to a raid on June 21, 2012 and ending with 11 arrests.

Police were told that ‘Basement Tony,’ Martell and a woman named ‘Sue’ were peddling pills and an assortment of illegal drugs out of the house.

Undercover officers began watching the house and noted that 19 men and eight women were seen entering and exiting the house in the span of two hours. Most visitors only stayed inside for five minutes.

Methamphetamine, crack cocaine, marijuana, magic mushrooms, Oxycontin, Tylenol 3s, and heroin were seized.

True North Fraser marketing food, drink Local producers already on board regional economic development entity

ook for it on the side of a food truck, on locally processed meats, even on some exotic shitake or enoki mushrooms, now that the True North Fraser logo has been unveiled to promote local growing.

The logo, which depicts stylized berries, farmhouses and fields amidst a backdrop of Coastal Mountains as the idea of Invest North Fraser, the regional economic development entity involving Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission.

The hope is that the northern side of the Fraser River will become known as an agricultural entity recognized by grocery shoppers and diners throughout the Lower Mainland or even outside the country.

People increasingly want to know where their food comes from, said Lori Graham, with Pitt Meadows Economic Development, at a reception last week announcing the logo.

Rod Roodenburg, with Ion Branding and Design, which created the design, said the North Fraser brand was already present.

“We just brought it out.”

Some local food producers are already on board.

Hopcott Premium Meats and Kitchen Picks Living Herbs had the logo stuck on to their products on display tables at the reception in the Arts Centre Theatre.

Kent Mullinex, with Kwantlen Polytechnic University, has been trying to raise awareness of the economic role of local production of food and shared some statistics to demonstrate that.

Mullinex says the food industry in the Lower Mainland is worth $5.5 billion annually, but most of that leaves the economy every day.

In one year, 2010, agriculture generated $2.5 billion, but lost $87 million. There’s only one processing facility in the Lower Mainland, despite the fact that B.C. grows fruit and vegetables.

“Billions of dollars are on the table,” he said.

But shoppers dependent on cheap food imports are vulnerable while the economy bleeds jobs and money to out-of-country producers.

“We have put our food system eggs into one basket, and it is a tenuous one.”

Peak oil, climate change, loss of arable land, population growth, and inflation could all compromise that, he added.

This is not a one-time proposition but an on-going one- a regional economic sector generating billions within and for the region’s economy and communities each and every year.

He said that sustainable food systems are part of a sustainable society.

In all, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission have more than 12,000 hectares of agricultural land. But it’s unlikely more than half of that is used for farming.

“It’s a good idea to recognize locally,” said Hsu, who’s company ships exotic mushrooms across the country for supermarkets and restaurants.

“Billions of dollars are on the table.”

Postage-stamp labels can even be stuck on individual food items while signs can also be made for roadside or vehicles, depending on how a company wants to use the logo.

Maple Ridge planner Diana Hall said the municipalities are doing an inventory of agricultural land in cooperation with the provincial government.

Maple Ridge is also working with Kwantlen on creating a bio-regional food system design and planning project. Pitt Meadows and Mission are expected to join in.

Ridge shuttle routes survive, but people still want more Improved service sought for Sundays and in Silver Valley

TransLink has heard from the public and listened. The rural bus routes throughout east Maple Ridge will remain, and could become even better, as the agency implements its optimization plans later this year.

“We definitely heard from a lot of people,” said TransLink spokesperson Derek Zabel.

During consultation this past fall, people told TransLink they wanted the C-48 and C-49 community shuttle routes preserved.

TransLink listened and gave up its plans to cut the southerly route of C-49, which runs down 272nd Street to Whonnock. It also agreed to keep the C-48 running along 100th Avenue in Thornhill, although it will add a portion to the route by hooking into Albion along McClure Drive and connecting to the

Pedersen recently finished collecting a petition, gathering 1,071 names while calling for preservation of the routes and better bus service throughout Maple Ridge.

Pedersen wants better bus service on Sundays in Maple Ridge, pointing out only two shuttle routes, the C-45 and C-47, are running, and those shut down early on Sunday.

She also wants buses to serve the new subdivision of Silver Valley, which has none.

As part of the review, the C-41 shuttle in Pitt Meadow will change. Instead of running one-way every 30 minutes, the C-41 will run hourly along Hammond and Bonson roads, in both directions, and connect with the new seniors’s centre.

According to TransLink, service optimization in 2011 helped provide 14 million new rides without added investment in service, increasing productivity by 3.1 per cent and generating a 5.5 per cent increase in revenue.

The smaller community shuttles also save TransLink money.

Pedersen said shuttle bus drivers make about $23 an hour, while drivers of conventional buses make $29 an hour.

“With the public’s help, we’re changing some bus service to better match travel demand, and make our system more efficient

while meeting the needs of our communities,” TransLink’s Doug Kelsey said in a release.

Commuters looking for faster service out of town into New Westminster and SkyTrain connections may have to wait awhile, however, and make do with the No. 791 that runs through Pitt Meadows from Maple Ridge on the way to Braid SkyTrain station.

“There are currently no plans for an express bus [along Lougheed Highway], “ said Zabel.

However, such a project could be part of the update of the Northeast sector transit plan currently underway. TransLink is looking for members of the public to give feedback on the plan for the Coquitlam-Maple Ridge area.

Zabel added that, so far, use of the tolled Golden Ears Bridge, a TransLink project, seems unaffected by the opening of the new Port Mann Bridge, which is also tolled.

The number of vehicles using the Golden Ears in January is in the 30,000 to 40,000 range, about the same as last January, before the opening of the new Port Mann Bridge.

“It is my understanding this is a more significant monetary issue for larger airports, which might warrant a more aggressive response.”

Nav Canada confirmed plans to appeal the assessments of its properties across Canada.

Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters worries the Nav Canada’s re-evaluations will trigger appeals by other agencies, such as the port authority or Canadian Pacific Rail.

“We are going to keep an eye on it, for sure,” said Walters. “We depend on that taxation.”

Walters noted following an appeal last year, B.C. Ferries saw the value of

its Horseshoe Bay terminal in West Vancouver drop from $49 million to $20.

The province intervened and the Crown corporation agreed to a property value of $47 million.

The Pitt Meadows Regional Airport Society took over the airport from the federal government in 1997.

The not-for-profit society is currently run by a board of nine directors appointed by Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows municipal councils.

The airport property was assessed at $39.4 million in 2011, $40.9 million in 2012, but dropped in 2013 to $28.1 million because a large portion of the property was reclassified to “farm-class.”

New fish hatchery almost complete Plans for larger centre scaled back

art one, the smaller fish hatchery, is almost done, so now it’s on to the second part of realizing the dream of a stewardship centre to welcome the world and teach about how to save salmon.

“We’d like to have a Cadillac, but it looks like we’ll have a real nice Chevy,” said Ross Davies, with the Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society.

“It’s not as big as originally envisioned, but it will serve us just fine.”

Davies was referring to the Kanaka Creek Watershed Stewardship Centre – a million-dollar Metro Vancouver project that has had features such as a green roof removed from the plans in order to keep costs down.

cational facility for the entire Lower Mainland, where people can learn about nature and the watershed, participate in hatchery activities, play outdoors, hike, test water quality, and survey stream invertebrates with interpreters.

The stewardardship centre will be the second building in the park after the completion of the $300,000 fish hatchery in about a month. It replaces the crumbling Bell-Irving hatchery, which had to be torn down because of mold and other issues.

Opening of the new hatchery is planned for April 21, when KEEPS has its annual Goodbye Chums event and releases baby salmon into the creek.

The hatchery is a smaller building than the one it replaces, but viewer friendly.

Since the hatchery was built 30 years ago, about eight million young salmon have been hatched and released to restock Lower Mainland streams.

While the replacement of the hatchery was the

priority in order to keep producing fish, there is less of a rush on for the stewardship centre, which could take until next year before construction begins.

“We’re going to get some funding in place first and then we’ll go.”

The stewardship centre will offer classroom and office space and will be used for Metro Vancouver recreational and nature programs, as well as KEEPS activities. The society has also talked with the District of Maple Ridge about recreation programs it could offer from the centre.

But Davies pointed out the two buildings are just parts of an overall reorganization of the site.

“It’s the headquarters to profile the whole watershed, not only just the hatchery site, but also Cliff Falls, the waterfront, everything.”

Wendy Dadalt, with Metro Vancouver parks, said small changes to the surrounding area will allow a greater variety of uses. Overnight camping could be organized

for groups, which could increase the park’s attractiveness to people throughout the region.

Metro Vancouver parks is putting in half a million dollars for the entire project, the same amount as the Pacific Parklands Foundation.

The Pacific Salmon Foundation and KEEPS are also chipping in. Detailed designs should be ready by the summer, making it an easier task to fundraise for with specifics in place.

While the stewardship centre won’t have a green roof, other green technologies will be on display, such as stormwater control techniques, use of natural light and native vegetation in the landscape.

According to Metro Vancouver, more than 360,000 people visited Kanaka Creek Regional Park in 2010.

She pointed out several creeks in the Lower Mainland, such as in Spanish Banks in Kitsilano, use Kanaka fry for stocking purposes, which helps in fundraising.

Say anything Former B.C. Premier and ex-MP Ujjal Dosanjh doesn’t think the current provincial government should apologize for the federal head tax charged to Chinese immigrants from 1885 to 1923.

Not because B.C. shouldn’t be sorry, just that politicians need to stop playing games.

Official apologies are wrong, he believes now.

They strengthen the urge for identity politics – us versus them.

They encourage pandering by politicians.

They don’t help, tearing societies apart rather than bringing them closer together.

Mr. Dosanjh, as an NDP MLA in the 1990s, campaigned for the federal government to apologize for the Chinese head tax. Then as a Liberal MP and cabinet minister in 2006, he helped then-prime minster Paul Martin make a historic apology.

But Mr. Dosanjh claims to have evolved since, and now opposes such apologies.

Doug Bing, Liberal candidate in the Maple RidgePitt Meadows riding, disagrees. His grandfather, father and aunt were charged a head tax in the early 1900s. He thinks an apology is important, to right a historical wrong, to encourage inclusiveness.

Premier Christy Clark has put off a decision on an official apology after a document was leaked, outlining a Liberal strategy to target ethnic voters in the May 14 election.

Mr. Dosanjh says all political parties do so, that the Liberal memo was no big deal.

The mistake the Liberals made, he added, was mixing government money with partisan purposes.

The provincial NDP is being accused of doing the same, taking more than $200,000 from constituency office budgets to pay for partisan activities conducted

by MLAs. Given such shenanigans, what good would another apology do?

What would it mean other than politicians are willing to say anything to get elected?

Mr. Dosanjh is speaking out now because?

In the end, all that’s been accomplished is an erosion of trust.

Ethnic strategy is nothing new VICTORIA – The B.C. legislature session ends this week.

It can’t come quickly enough for Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals.

This is also the week we see the rest of the fallout from “ethnic-gate,” as the latest controversy over B.C. Views partisan activity by political staff has been Tom Fletcher clumsily labelled.

A disgruntled former B.C. Liberal caucus staffer handed the NDP opposition an internal memo setting out a strategy for ethnic “outreach” that strayed into forbidden territory, suggesting that ethnic-friendly government events could be staged and participants’ names collected and turned over to the party.

“This secret plan clearly demonstrates the Liberals are deliberately folding government resources and staff into their party’s campaign machinery, despite rules that forbid this,” thundered NDP house leader John Horgan. “We’ve seen this before, with the Liberals’ efforts to run a secret committee to subvert the public process around Burnaby Hospital, and in the attack website created by caucus staff and launched by the Liberal party.”

Casual observers might see this as a disturbing new development in misuse of public resources. It’s disturbing, all right, but it’s hardly new.

The “attack website” Horgan refers to is a case in point. While a website targeting NDP leader Adrian Dix was being cooked

up in the B.C. Liberal bunker, a similar effort was being developed in NDP research down the hall. This partisan message detailed all the worthwhile things that could be done with the government’s $15 million advertising budget singing the praises of the government’s “jobs plan.”

But this one carried the logo of the NDP caucus, so it was within the rules. The average person, seeing two groups of staff on the public payroll, each slagging the other, might not detect much of a difference.

The biggest headline from the leaked memo was its reference to generating “quick wins” for the election campaign by staging apologies for historic racial injustices. It mentioned how former premier Gordon Campbell delivered a solemn apology in 2008 for the decision to turn away a ship carrying Sikh refugees from Vancouver harbour – shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. What does a modern provincial premier accomplish by apologizing for a federal immigration decision made in 1915?

Why would another premier now feel the need to apologize for a federal “head tax” imposed on Chinese immigrants from 1885 to 1923?

The answer is obvious.

Again, don’t expect much to change with an NDP government. Asked last week if he would stage an apology for the head tax, Dix delivered a well-rehearsed history lesson that made it clear he is anxious to do so.

Liberals retort that the NDP caucus has a similar staffer named Gabriel Yiu, who has taken three leaves of absence to run for MLA, and is in practical terms a professional NDP candidate.

Yiu is running for a fourth time in Vancouver-Fraserview, having been defeated in 2009 by former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed. That campaign was notorious for anonymous Chinese-language pamphlets claiming the NDP favours legalizing drugs and imposing a “death tax” on inheritance.

This latest scandal might produce meaningful reform. But the misuse of public money to further the interests of political parties is deeply entrenched.

Editor, The News: As a resident of Albion, I am concerned that people may not be adequately informed regarding the open house for north Albion, which involves amendments to the allowable density in the area.

I just recently found out about this significant meeting, which takes place this Wednesday (today) at Samuel Robertson Secondary School.

According to the district website it says that attendees “will be asked to provide input on prioritization of potential amenities in the Albion Area and also to comment on draft amenity contribution policies.” Now is the perfect time to comment on the amenities that you favour for the area, including possible parks, or connecting trails to Maple Crest.

It was my understanding that 61 per cent of the people completing the questionnaire went on record to oppose “slight density” increases, as they were worded on the questionnaire, and yet somehow the staff was able determine that, overall, the residents in attendance were “in favour” of the proposed changes – that being the addition of several hundred homes to the area.

Please, take the time to attend this meeting and comment on the changes to the formal and social contract that Maple Ridge previously formed with the residents of Albion, found in the OCP. This meeting is being held in the library at Samuel Robertson secondary, 4:30 to 8 p.m.

Sad state for democracy Editor, The News: For years now, it has been about voting to get rid of a party.

Once a party has been in power for more than one term, it becomes arrogant and self-serving.

Now you have no choice but to vote for the party that can defeat the one so full of itself that it’s just short of becoming a dictatorship. The next party in power has four years to show that it can listen to the people.

It really is a sad state of affairs for Canadian democracy.

This survey ignores the fundamental problem of decreased funding by the provincial government, while ignoring the increasing costs of operations.

Our school board and district education office should be lobbying the Ministry of Education to match the necessary funding needed to operate our district adequately.

The provincial government should be forced to take action to remedy this situation and should not be asking the children in SD42 to go without on a larger scale each year.

This survey enables the board to abdicate its responsibilities for making difficult decisions, while

downloading it onto employees and the public, who may not fully understand the implications of the cuts they suggest.

The board’s inaction has the appearance of placing the promotion of government tax policy over its responsibility to advocate for public education in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

We strongly urge the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board to reconsider its position regarding further cuts and instead take a stronger stand and demand adequate funding from the Ministry of Education.

Offloading Editor, The News: Re: $6 million shortfall for SD42 (The News, March 1).

No mention is made of the federal government’s giving huge corporate tax breaks to the already rich CEOs in Canada, while abdicating its responsibility to properly fund these Canadian institutions.

The federal government gives block funding to the provinces, which doesn’t

keep up with our population growth and demands.

The provinces are left with cutting services like education to try and balance their books.

The municipalities and their school districts have to then cut their budgets because of the shortfall.

It’s called offloading.

There is no need for this shortfall if the federal government properly funded the provinces, for its services like education and health care.

Why isn’t this question asked? Why is it not entered into the debate?

I’ll tell you why, because to give all these tax breaks to the corporate CEOs, the federal government has to take the money from somewhere.

And that somewhere is our education systems, heath care, affordable housing.

That is the price we’re paying to subsidize the corporate empires and the lavish salaries the CEOs are making, those who are the major funders of the Harper government.

Neighbours frustrated by repeated raids

Coun. Hogarth evicted a man and woman following the second raid, but could do little to keep the drug dealers away.

“To be honest with you, the Residential Tenancy Act really does not help much,” he said.

“That’s my frustration, because I have to follow all the rules and regulations, and even by doing that, you are still left out to dry.”

Since the tenants and their guests pay little attention to repeated eviction notices or written warnings, Hogarth said his hands are tied.

He encountered similar problems with another property he managed on Edge Street in 2011.

The house at 12038 Edge Street was repeatedly raided by police and finally torn down after a fire.

“The unfortunate part is it has to get into an ugly situation and cause an issue for the neighbourhood before something can be done,” he added.

“Here we have … affordable housing. But now because of the actions, or inaction [of the tenants], there’s another couple that are now put on the street because of poor judgement.”

Following Thursday’s bust, a “no occupancy”

notice was posted on the back section of the heritage home because fire code and building violations were found.

Hogarth hopes that Thursday’s raid by police and subsequent actions by the district’s bylaw officers will keep the unwanted visitors at bay.

“I think the final resolve to it was well executed [on Thursday],” he added.

The district signed a heritage revitalization agreement with the owner last year, to give a fiveyear municipal property tax exemption.

The home is slated to be turned into a duplex, while a four-storey apartment building with 66 units is to be built behind it.

Hogarth does not know when construction will start.

For neighbours of the crack shack, the cycle of police raids is frustrating.

Tyler Ducharme and his wife believe the raids do little to address the problems that plague the Port Haney neighbourhood.

Ducharme blames the district for allowing crack shacks to fester by failing to enforce bylaws.

He believes it doesn’t make sense to locate services such as the Salvation Army shelter next

to a drug treatment centre and a pocket of drug houses.

He’s complained to council repeatedly, but says he’s now given up, though still annoyed that the some properties continue to cost taxpayers money due to repeated visits from police, the fire department and bylaw officers.

“The attitude of city hall to the whole area and these type of problems is so lackadaisical and lacking in any meaningful community input,” Ducharme said. “They will not acknowledge what is going on in that location. It’s willful blindness throughout city hall.

Unless you show up at council and want to talk about Happy Kitten Fun Day, they don’t want to hear it.”

The district has issued clean-up notices to the property owner, Yang Lee Liu. Sgt. Daryl Creighton, with the Ridge Meadows street enforcement unit, confirmed that RCMP have notified the home owner about the latest raid.

Based on what officers saw in the house, Creighton said bylaws, fire, B.C. Hydro and Terasen Gas are now involved.

Scaled back Stadium from front

Maple Ridge MP Randy Kamp was to announce the federal funds, which came from Western Economic Diversification, on Wednesday.

Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin admitted it won’t mean a return to the day when there were bleachers at the stadium, but it’s a “huge step” towards revitalization of the field.

“It will support the kids. It will give them a top qualify field to play on,” he said Tuesday.

Daykin didn’t know if the field would have a sand or the morepreferred clay base.

But, “Getting 21st century drainage in there will help a lot.

They’ll get more use out of it.”

Parks and facilities director Dave Boag said the project was scaled back in order to apply for the infrastructure grant program.

The field will be completely rebuilt.

The work will be done to allow future construction of bleachers, although such a project is not currently being envisioned.

“It will be a complete replacement of what’s there,” noting the field was first put built in 1951.

“It will be a designated year-round baseball training facility now,” without having to double as a soccer pitch during the fall and winter months.

Boag said a request for bids will be issued soon, with construction to start after minor baseball season ends in June. One of the grant conditions is that the project be completed by March 2014.

The Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association originally envisioned a 5,000-seat $9-million baseball stadium, but scaled down the proposal after losing out on grant funding in 2008, then opted for a 300-seat, $2 million park, which was later scaled back again.

Ka-Vroom brings back soap box derby

a-Vroom is a unique bunch of kids, organizing a nostalgic family event in Maple Ridge this spring.

It started as a classroom exercise. Ka-Vroom was a project of the Maple Ridge secondary FACTS (For Academically Creative and Talented Students) group, as an event to help bring the community together.

Led by Nic Renaud, it as now evolved into an extra-curricular high school club at Maple Ridge secondary, meeting every week to put on a soap box derby for younger kids.

The group plans the schedule, secures sponsorships, and makes presentations at elementary schools to get kids aged six to 14 jacked up about their race.

Sponsoring teacher Karen Aitken said they’re just a great group of kids.

Amy Liu, another Ka-Vroom sparkplug, takes the podium to tell the elementary school students about the event. She talks about races and trophies, balloon animals, pudding eating contests and Freezies. That last bit never fails to elicit a response from her audiences, and a Homer-esque “Freeeziees,” echoes through the crowd.

The teens get a charge out of putting together a fun event for kids.

“They [the racers] are always smiling, and they can’t wait to make their run, and then they can’t wait to run again,” said Ren-

aud. “It really is a fun-filled family event.”

“You help the community, you get volunteer hours – it’s a win/ win,” asserts Liu. “We’re volunteers, and we like to help out.”

Ka-Vroom first got the green light three years ago. They put on two events, were interrupted by teacher job action last year, and now are back, and giving up a lunch hour every week to organize.

The first year, they didn’t have the Freezies solid. Fortunately, the little racers found the syrup flavour is actually more important than the temperature. Another year, the organizers made way too much pudding for the pudding eating contest. Not about to let the leftovers go to waste, and as a reward for their community service, they sat down to a pudding feast. They consumed much of the 48 boxes of pudding between the eight of them, and to this day a few Ka-Vroomers can’t even look at mousse desserts.

But now the organizers of KaVroom have their routine down pat. They have secured a golden sponsorship ($500) from the Maple Ridge Youth Council.

There will be fully frozen Freezies, balloon animals, possibly a local band, and numerous features, including face painting.

The only real issue to be decided is whether to deliberately make excess pudding.

The event runs June 1 on North Avenue, on a slope where the little cars can reach speeds of 50 km/h. The racers all wear helmets, and hay bales line the

course.

The parent-child bonding that comes with building and racing a soap box derby car can be considerable.

Bob Johnston is a community volunteer who built a car for the group, so that kids who want to race but don’t have a car can take part.

He said it is a project that can be as basic or as complex as the builder wants.

“We estimate that for a family, it would be about 60 hours of work,” he said.

Building the basics takes an afternoon, but with the mechanics of brakes, steering and axles, “you can get as sophisticated as you want,” said Johnston.

Aitken’s dad spent most of a vacation visit building a second car. Her five-year-old son Zachary put in his time with the tools, but when school was in session and his hosts were away, grandpa was kept pretty busy.

Karen likes the fact that her dad taught little Zachary to use a jigsaw and other tools. She jumped into the project when it was time to paint.

Now there are two Ka-Vroom cars.

The event runs June 1 on North Avenue. Last time there were more than 20 participants.

“We’re hoping for more this year,” said Renaud. “The more people we get, the more fun it is.”

The deadline for entries is May 1.

Skid Row CEO guest of youth justice

The Skid Row CEO will be the guest speaker as the Ridge Meadows Youth and Justice Advocacy Association holds its annual general meeting on Thursday night.

Joe Roberts was drug-addicted and living under a bridge in 1989.

He pulled himself out of that life, rose to become the CEO of the multimedia development company Mindware Design Communications, and in less than four years led the company through an 800 per cent increase in business. He earned his first $1 million before turning 35.

His amazing story has led to a lot of recognition. Roberts was named one of MacLean’s magazine’s 10 Canadians Who Make a Difference, and Business in Vancouver magazine’s 40 Under 40 Outstand-

ing Business People. He is now an author and motivational speaker.

“It’s pretty amazing that you can be on the streets doing heroin, and later become a CEO,” said association coordinator Ranjit Kingra.

The association is a local nonprofit organization that provides youth diversion programs for young people who are in conflict with the law. Their clients are referred to them by Crown Counsel and the RCMP for a restorative justice program designed to hold youth accountable, make amends to those harmed, but avoid the traditional justice system, where appropriate. It began in 1994 and was the first of its kind in the province.

The AGM will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Westview secondary (20905 Wicklund Ave.), and the general public is invited.

“We welcome people who want to support us, and who want to know more about what we’re do-

ing,” said Kingra.

The association’s goal is to keep kids from going to jail.

Looking at the most recent available statistical analysis of the success of the program, from 2010, those referred to diversion will reoffend 54 per cent of the time.

What shows the success of the program is that of those who complete it, 80 per cent do not reoffend.

In 2012, there were 84 clients diverted away from the justice system, and approximately half of those were for theft. An equal number of boys and girls are referred, said Kingra.

After close to 20 years in operation, the program has served more than 2,000 youth.

Great wines tell a story Maple Ridge chef Kristof Gillese is building a following with his wine blog

ucked in the southwest corner of France, stretching from the Atlantic Coast and north to Libourne, the wine making region of Bordeux is legendary.

It’s believed the first vineyards were planted more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans.

Pour Kristof Gillese a glass of Bordeaux, he’ll close his eyes and imagine its history.

“I find that wine is uniquely capable of telling a story of where it comes from. That’s the part that’s intriguing to me.”

You can’t help but feel the wet springs, gentle summers and mild winters when you savour a Bordeaux.

“Bordeaux really is my passion. I love those big, red Cab-Sauv-driven blends,” he says.

A certified red seal chef, Gillese was forced to reinvent his career when the economic recession hit.

Wine, just like food, has always been a passion but was more of a hobby than something to study until 2010. Some of his earliest memories of wine involve trips into his grandparent’s cellar.

“My father has no formal wine education but is one of the best sommeliers I know,” says Gillese.

His dad belonged to the Opimian Society, a Canadian cooperative wine buying club, that introduced Gillese to something more than claret.

“We cooked all our food,, never went out to dinner,” says Gillese.

“We had these neat, very exciting wines. We were always learning more - what was special about the

So in 2010, as restaurants closed around him and chefs saw their teams slashed in half, Gillese started the International Sommelier Guild’s level 1 course.

His instructor was DJ Kearney, a well-known Vancouver-based wine educator, wine writer and judge.

“I had this amazingly gifted and passionate woman who spoke about wine with such conviction and vigour that all of us int he class were just swept away by it,” says Gillese, who credits Kearney for push-

ing him to learn more. Three years later, Gillese is a certified wine steward who is studying to become a master of Bordeaux.

“Everyone who goes to art school learns about Van Gogh but then they take a piece of him and use that to create their own Van Gogh or own self,” he explains. see Wine Blog, p17

experience A Life in The Day at Maple Ridge Art Gallery exhibition celebrates the work of artist duo Celia and Keith Rice-Jones A new installation of work featuring sculpture and ceramics by celebrated artists Keith and Celia Rice-Jones opens this week at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery.

Originally from the UK where both developed a shared affinity for eastern and modernist aesthetics, the couple’s work has continued to evolve in captivating ways through their shared home practice at Wildrice Studio in Burnaby.

Despite sharing the same clay, kiln and aesthetic sensibilities, their respective creative output is widely divergent in both scale and style.

Celia Rice-Jones has gained acclaim in the ceramics community for her largely functional vessels, pots and plates that speak to the many years she has spent refining form, balance and surface treatments.

Whether they are put to use in the kitchen or not, these individual pieces are surprisingly light and a pleasure to behold.

“There is a naturally established circular completeness to my lifestyle,” she says.

“I can make bread in the kitchen, tend to the garden on the way to the studio, and make pots to use with food. I enjoy this revolving cycle of activities.”

While Keith Rice-Jones’ work is equally in tune with this environment, his recent large-scale figurative and abstract pieces look more at home at any time of year in an outdoor setting such as the couple’s beautiful garden.

While some are more humanoid in appearance and others more purely abstract, they clearly speak to Keith’s varied influences.

“Some of my earlier work with stylized functional vessels and containers continues, though my current focus is with large sculptural work.”

the gallery that lends elements of eastern serenity to the arrangement. Tall plinths are intermingled with long overhead banners and in one corner suggestions of a Japanese garden extend the Asian theme further.

He was highlighted as a B.C. wine writer at the 2013 International Wine Bloggers Conference held for the first time in Canada in January.

Last week, he attended the 2013 Playhouse International Wine Festival as a member of the media, tweeting about wine he was sampling and the food he would pair it with.

“I only write about wine, I find extraordinary,” says Gillese, who unlike some reviews doesn’t rate every wine he uncorks.

Great winemakers tell a story, he says.

That’s why he loves the French word “terroir” that describes wine regions, the soil and weather where the grapes ripen and grow.

“Terroir is not just about soil and the region and sunlight but about the human part of making a wine, the spirit of it. As a chef, I understand this implicitly,” says Gillese.

There’s no recipe that says you must invest this amount of love into this stew, he explains.

“But that’s the essence to what great cooking is and to me that’s what wine making is about.”

Don Herman has coached senior girls basketball at Maple Ridge Secondary for close to 20 years, but will step down next season to coach Grade 8s.

he Oak Bay Breakers had easily dispatched the Maple Ridge Ramblers in a Christmas tournament, but coach Rob Kinnear knew there would be no easy win in Saturday’s rematch at the bronze medal game at the provincial tournament.

“We beat them handily then, but we knew they were getting better by the week,” he said, and gave the credit to his rival bench boss, calling the Ridge coach “a legend.”

“We knew they would be prepared and they would be ready – any team coached by Don Herman would,” he said.

“And, I don’t think there’s a more well-liked coach in girls basketball.”

Word has spread that Herman is leaving the senior girls coaching ranks next season, and people are reflecting on the mark he has made. He has been the senior girls coach at MRSS since 1995, and gets the team into the provincial tour-

nament most years, winning the championship in 2007. He also has three Fraser Valley championships, including this year.

“He’s the best coach in the province, bar none – in terms of Xs and Os, and the way he is with the kids,” says his assistant, Sacha Page.

He is always positive, never points the finger of blame, and doesn’t use the referees as a scapegoat.

“He’s an example for the girls.”

His star player, Kolbie Orum, appreciates the dedication of the guy they call “Herm.”.

“He’s a good guy, and he’s always there for you,” she said. “And he’s gone through championships, and he’s experienced.”

“He’s the one who got us here – practising every day,” added Jane Grisley.

He universally regarded as a nice guy, but the players say he is also relentless in driving to improve.

Pitt juniors win B.C. silver The Pitt Meadows Marauders junior boys basketball squad took second place in the province, at the B.C. tournament held at Vancouver College over the weekend.

Pitt entered the tournament as the Fraser Valley champs and the second seed, and lost a very close final 40-38 against Burnaby South.

On Friday they beat host Vancouver College 62-37 in the semi-final game. On Thursday they downed D.P. Todd of Prince George by a similarly lopsided score, 60-35.

Marauders in B.C. tourney The Pitt Meadows Marauders senior boys basketball squad is in the provincial tournament today at the Langley Events Centre.

They opened the tourney yesterday against S.W. Churchill of Vanvouver – a team they had beaten earlier this year in the final of their host Air Show tournament 83-69 in January.

A win there would advance them into a tough game against the Walnut Grove Gators, who have recently been ranked tops in the province, today at 3 p.m.

Bartley makes his NHL debut staff reporter

Another Maple Ridge hockey player has arrived in the NHL. Vic Bartley was called up from the farm team to play with the Nashville Predators over the weekend as they took on the Edmonton Oilers and Minnesota Wild.

The Preds had been in a 1-5-0 slump, and decided it was time for a roster shakeup.

Coach Barry Trotz said Bartley could have made the team right out of training camp, but Nashville went in a different direction.

The shakeup worked, as the Nashville broke their losing streak with a 6-0 win over Edmonton Friday, and then got a point in a shootout loss to Minnesota on Saturday.

Bartley played a regular shift, didn’t get a point, and was an even on plus/minus.

The 25-year-old has been a standout for the Milwaukee admirals, leading defencemen with 26 points (seven

The number of local kids playing in the NHL is impressive.

Bartley is a teammate of Maple Ridge product Brandon Yip, who has played parts of four sea-

son in the NHL. Another local player, defenceman Patrick Wiercioch has stuck as a regular with the Ottawa Senators this season, and has eight points (two goals, six assists) in 21 games.

And Maple Ridge’s Andrew Ladd just keeps getting better, averaging almost a point a game as the captain of the Winnipeg Jets, with 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 25 games.

Two more Maple Ridge products are in the AHL. Brett Sonne of the Peoria Rivermen and Brad Hunt of the Chicago Wolves are still looking for their first game in The Show.

After a career that spanned 934 games, Pitt Meadow native Brendan Morrison is still looking for work, and the 37-year-old said after helping to negotiate the latest NHL collective bargaining agreement that he wants to play. He split last season between the Calgary Flames and Chicago Blackhawks.

They recall playing a really hard game earlier that took them into the evening, and afterward being told that they had a 7 a.m. practice. And then “Herm” telling his disbelieving, slackjawed players a second time: “No, seriously, 7 a.m. practice. You better be there.”

Players don’t always consider that coaches like to sleep in too, and Herman will be doing more of that next year.

He and Sacha will take on the Grade 8 team at Ridge next year, switching jobs with current Grade 8 coach Dave Semper.

Coaching Grade 8 brings few expectations, fewer nights given to games and practices, and game times that are right after school – meaning he can be home by dinner time most night.

Herman said it’s a good time to exit, because he will leave Semper with a strong returning team. It will likely be led by the six-foot-three post Grisley, point guard Kate Head and Gabby Cousins, who was the team’s second leading scorer before injury ended her season.

Will he miss senior ball?

“Huge,” he says. “It’s kind of what I do.”

It was an emotional provincials for him, looking up in the crowd to see four alumni from the 2007 championship team there to cheer on their alma mater, and parents of kids he coached almost 20 years ago in the crowd.

“I’ve had the opportunity over the years to work with so many good people,” he said. “The relationships last a lifetime.”

One day, he and Sacha might find a group of Grade 8s that they want to bring all the way through senior ball, and see how far they could take them.

“I’m not saying never,” said Herman. “But it’s time to take a break.”

“You’ve got to change your game, and adjust to what they’re calling,” she said.

Orum said it was a successful year in that the team won the Fraser Valley tournament, and played for medal at the provincial tournament.

“It was a proving tournament for our team,” said Orum. “And I felt we did that.”

The tears in both girls’ eyes showed it was an emotional loss for the team.

Herman said his team was tired. With the loss of two players, he only plays eight girls, and by the end of the tournament fatigue was a factor.

He said the girls will be able to look back on their season with perspective, and see how much they accomplished – a Valley championship and fourth place finish in the province.

“It’s an outstanding year,” he said.

South Kamloops repeated as champions, beating Brookswood 59-49 in the final.

NYKOLUK MAXWELL, Mary (nee Maloff) born in 1923 in Veregin, Saskatchewan, and passed away peacefully with her family holding her hands and reading her scripture, on March 4, 2013 in Maple Ridge, BC. Predeceased by her husband, Mike in 2004 and daughter Mary Streloff in 1969, she will be missed by her grandchildren Blair Streloff and Trish Streloff, and great grandchildren Ella and Caleb, and numerous friends.

Mary loved the outdoors and nature of all kinds, which she nurtured and grew for over 40 years on her farm in Pitt Meadows.

Services will be held on Monday, March 11, 2013 at 1:00 PM in the Burkview Funeral Chapel located at 1340 Dominion Avenue, in Port Coquitlam, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Heart and Stroke Society would be greatly appreciated.
