A 21-year-old Tsawwassen man has been identified as the victim of a murder which took place at a Fernridge home in Langley last week also containing a marijuana grow operation.

South Delta Baptist Church pastor Paul Johnson confirmed that his son, Taylor Daniel Johnson, is the murder victim.

Johnson said investigators have told him that his son was house-sitting and was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Johnson said he doesn’t know the details of his son’s death and that police have not released the information to the family. He added that police have nevertheless been kind to his family during this time and that Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford was visiting today (March 4) to offer comfort and support.

Johnson moved with his wife Wendi and six children to Tsawwassen from Tucson, Arizona, about five

and a half years ago.

Taylor Johnson was an avid sports enthusiast, playing rugby at South Delta Secondary when he attended there, and previously at Tucson High in Arizona. He also enjoyed snowboarding, ice hockey and baseball.

“He was the kind of kid that was really well-liked by all of his friends,” said Johnson. “He was a very endearing, very soft-hearted kid.”

“He worked at the church parttime as a janitor, just being a typical 21-year-old trying to do odd jobs and so forth,” said Johnson.

Police investigators have told Johnson that the people they have interviewed have all spoken highly of Taylor’s character.

said Taylor was well-loved by a wide range of people.

“Everybody who knew him liked him,” he said. “He was gentle, kind, he was very considerate.”

Burdett said pastor Johnson will now take a leave from his regular church duties to grieve but will return for Easter services.

“It’s been very traumatic for our

church community, and the community at large,” he said. “I mean, it’s just a shocking thing.”

Homicide investigators were called to a Fernridge home around 10 p.m. last Tuesday (Feb. 26) in the 2000 block of 200 Street to check on the well-being of a man who was staying at the residence.

Police found a deceased man and a

grow-op inside the rural home.

A press release issued by IHIT on Monday (March 4) said Taylor does not possess a criminal record and that the investigation has revealed he was a caretaker for the vacant property where he was murdered.

An autopsy has been conducted but the cause of death is not being released.

A neighbour of the home where Taylor was murdered who identified herself as Mandy said a “Troy” lived at the home, which also contains a large barn in the back.

She had no idea a grow-op was next door. However, she did note that the man living next door didn’t appear to work and was always home.

“But there wasn’t cars coming and going from the home,” Mandy said.

“Troy is a very nice guy,” she said.

“He would call me if my dogs got out.”

Her neighbour has a border collie and police weren’t commenting on the whereabouts of a dog living at that home.

Mandy said her neighbour appears to be in his late 40s or early 50s.

A funeral service for Taylor Johnson will take place this Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m. at South Delta Baptist Church (1988 56th St., Tsawwassen).

The woman whose impaired and dangerous-driving convictions in the May 2008 death of toddler Alexa Middelaer were upheld by the B.C. Court of Appeal has now asked the country’s highest court to hear her case.

Crown counsel John Gordon confirmed Thursday that Carol Ann Berner “has applied (to the Supreme Court of Canada) for leave to appeal from the decision.”

He is not convinced she will succeed.

“I would be blown away if they were to grant leave on this application,” Gordon said, noting such applications are typically only granted if “the

Supreme Court of Canada thinks… there’s issues of national or public importance, or if there are conflicting decisions on what the proper legal principles are coming from other provincial courts of appeal.”

“There aren’t,” he said. “The governing legal principles are well-established.”

Berner’s lawyer, David Tarnow, said he has “a good argument” to support the application, which was made Feb. 5.

“We now await their decision.”

Both Gordon and Tarnow acknowledged that only a small percentage of such applications are successful.

Berner was found guilty in July 2010 of two counts of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm

and two counts of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm, after losing control of her car on a Delta street, striking and killing four-yearold Alexa and seriously injuring her aunt.

Alexa, who attended preschool in Crescent Beach, is the daughter of Laurel Middelaer, who heads up Southridge Junior School in South Surrey.

Thursday, Middelaer said the Supreme Court challenge makes an apology Berner gave during sentencing in Surrey Provincial Court “ring a little bit hollow.”

“The hard thing for us, and I think for anyone who sat through the sentencing, is she publicly apologized and said she was going to take re-

sponsibility for her actions,” Middelaer said.

“Everybody’s entitled to a fair process, but at the end of the day there’s a little girl who’s dead and she should be in Grade 4 right now.”

The provincial appeal of Berner’s convictions was heard in November 2011, with Tarnow arguing that the trial judge had erred on several points of law in convicting his client.

That appeal was dismissed last November.

Next month, an appeal of Berner’s 2½-year sentence is set to be heard in B.C. Court of Appeal. An application this morning by Tarnow to adjourn that hearing until after the SCC decision was denied, Gordon said.

Border crossings that are often jammed with shoppers heading south may soon get even more congested as the U.S. government is forced to lay off thousands of border employees.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has begun cutting employee hours and is slated to furlough 5,000 more staff by early April after Congress and President Barack Obama failed to reach a comprehensive deal by March 1 to reduce federal spending, triggering automatic spending cuts.

The initial cuts at Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are already resulting in reports of longer processing lines at some U.S. airports.

CBP officials predict waits up to 50 per cent longer at major airports – four hours or longer at peak times – and a doubling of peak waits to five hours or more at the busiest land crossings.

“Travellers should adjust their trip itineraries to account for un-

expected delays,” the department warned in a statement.

The longest southbound lines at Lower Mainland crossings are weekend mornings and they could get much longer because the use of overtime is now banned.

“They hold shifts over longer or call shifts in earlier to keep as many lines open as possible – that won’t be happening,” said Ken Oplinger, president of the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re thinking it could add an extra 15 to 30 minutes onto the regular lines.”

Nexus card holders should continue to get speedy clearance but new applicants face longer approval times due to an expected surge in demand.

It’s hoped the arbitrary acrossthe-board cuts will be unpalatable to both Republicans and Democrats, spurring them to reach a deal before border slowdowns cause serious economic damage.

“If this goes on into the summer that’s when we’re really going to have an issue,” Oplinger said. “On a summer weekend we can get twoto three-hour lineups and we could be adding 45 minutes to an hour on top of that at those peak times.”

One factor that might slow cross-border shopping is the recent

slide of the loonie.

The dollar is down to around 97 cents U.S. and Oplinger said a further drop to below 95 cents may begin to reduce the number of southbound shoppers from Canada.

Truckers are also being warned they face significant delays at the borders in the weeks ahead if the U.S. budget impasse continues.

B.C. Trucking Association vice-president Trace Acres said major impacts aren’t expected for the first 30 days, as affected U.S. border staff are getting one month notice.

“It is definitely a concern,” Acres said, estimating 300 of the association’s 450 members haul cargo across the border.

More truckers could pursue membership in FAST (Free and Secure Trade), the equivalent of Nexus for trusted commercial carriers, but Acres added it’s not a solution for most firms.

“There has been a lot of work done on both sides of the border to try to improve efficiencies and reduce border wait times,” Acres said.

The fear now, he said, is that all the time invested by truckers, manufacturers, exporters and authorities on both sides of the border “could just become undone by factors outside of our control.”

Delta South BC Liberal candidate Bruce McDonald says residents who struggle with delays crossing the George Massey Tunnel need a new route into Richmond, and the NDP aren’t offering one.

“Premier Christy Clark and today’s BC Liberals have a bold vision for the future – one that includes making vital investments in our province’s infrastructure,” said McDonald. “One of the reasons I chose to step forward is that her vision includes a plan to fix the biggest bottleneck my community faces every day – the Massey Tunnel.”

McDonald said the NDP’s plan is to simply paint the tunnel and add better lighting, referring to comments made in January on Sher-E-Punjab radio 1550 AM by Delta North NDP candidate Sylvia Bishop.

“I think there are things we can do in the meantime to improve the traffic flow,” she said in the interview.

“Studies show that when the interiors of tunnels are bright, whether they’re painted and better lit, people continue to drive faster.”

People who live south of the Fraser understand this serious problem

won’t be solved with a shiny coat of paint, said McDonald continued.

“They deserve better than that.”

However, Bishop said Wednesday the suggestions she made weren’t intended as a permanent solution to the tunnel’s traffic woes, and the NDP has not ruled out replacing it.

“We don’t have any simple solutions,” said Bishop. “[Finding a fix for the tunnel] requires a lot of consultation to determine what the best option is. But we are only at the beginning of that process.”

She noted that despite McDonald’s claims that a tunnel replacement is a priority for the Liberals, it wasn’t included in Premier Clark’s recent budget.

“It’s totally unfunded,” Bishop said.

“If this project is so important to the Liberals, why isn’t it in their budget?”

Clark announced in September the provincial government’s intention to replace the aging tunnel. The tunnel has 10 to 15 years left of serviceable life, after which the tunnel’s electrical and ventilation systems will need to be completely replaced. The 629-metre-long tunnel was completed in 1959, and currently carries more than 80,000 vehicles each day, for 30 million trips annually.

A Tsawwassen private school is tied for first place in this year’s Fraser Institute rankings for elementary schools across B.C. Southpointe Academy scored a perfect 10 in the rankings, which use the controversial provincial Foundation Skills Assessment test to evaluate the reading, writing, and numeracy levels of students in Grades 4 and 7.

Headmaster Dean Croy said the ranking is one “snapshot” that confirms Southpointe is doing things well.

“But my vision of success would be a whole photo album of snapshots which show that we are successful,” he said.

Croy said ultimately the rankings help let the community know that the standard for literacy and numeracy in the school is high, but the school wouldn’t alter its programming to score a higher number in the Fraser Institute rankings.

“I see motivated and engaged students, very competent teachers, and small class sizes which allows teachers to give frequent high quali-

ty feedback,” he said.

But Glen Hansman, second vice-president of the BC Teachers’ Federation, says the small class sizes at private schools is the main reason for their placing well in the Fraser Institute rankings every year.

“We wish we had those sorts of class sizes and if per-student funding in B.C. got back up to the national average we’d be able to do the sort of one-on-one support that some kids need these days,” he said.

The capital plan for the Harris Barn relocation and refurbishment project has increased to $1.75 million from its original $600,000 budget, according to a municipal report from the parks department.

Although originally budgeted only to save the barn from demolition at its home on 64th Street and move it to Hawthorne Grove Park, the 2013 capital plan includes $1.15 million to convert it into a community centre.

Parks director Ken Kuntz said in an interview that things like utilities, a sewer connection, and heating and ventilation upgrades have been scheduled to make it compliant with current building codes for a public assembly space.

“When we first started on the project we talked about a structure that the wind would still whistle through but the rain would keep off of you, so it was tantamount to an elaborate picnic shelter,” he said.

“Now it’s a full 365-day-a-year community centre and our cost to do that are really even less than if we were to build it brand new.”

Kuntz pointed out that not all of the money budgeted for the Harris Barn are from tax dollars. The federal government recently awarded Delta $250,000 for the project through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, a stimulus program.

The average income for parents of Southpointe Academy is $90,500 and tuition averages just under $1,000 per month per student.

Delta’s top ranked schools are all private schools. Immaculate Conception in North Delta is ranked 44th of the 853 schools in the list, while Sacred Heart in Ladner is ranked 55th.

The top-ranked Delta public school is Neilson Grove in Ladner at 104th,

while the lowest is McCloskey in North Delta at 634th.

Delta School District superintendent Dianne Turner said the school board does not rank its schools, so the FSA results aren’t relevant.

“We prefer to rely on information from classroom teachers that will help us focus on measures of learner success that will not be used to rank our schools,” she said.

Turner said the district measures the success of each school in ways that do not include standardized test results, instead relying on indicators such as teacher assessments, report cards, graduation rates, and feedback from teachers, parents, and students.

Chief administrative officer George Harvie said a report will come to council April 15 breaking down the entire cost of the project.

“As council has directed, there are no increases in taxes this year through the 1.9 per cent [tax rate], and none of that goes toward this project,” he said Monday.

The barn will be operated by the Kirkland House Foundation, a volunteer-run group which maintains the adjacent historic farmhouse.

The house is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for weddings.

Kuntz said the addition of the barn will provide another venue for weddings or other public events that will bring revenue to the Founda-

tion and make it self-sustaining.

“It won’t cost the taxpayers anything to operate this thing,” he said.

Coun. Ian Paton said he visited the barn recently to look in on its progress and was surprised how many couples were there planning their wedding.

“The people of Delta are going to be so proud of this barn when we’re finished,” he said. “It’ll be one of a kind, I don’t think anything can rival this barn when it’s done.”

Work is now being done to install a fire suppression system, enhanced lighting, a mobility lift for people with disabilities, a kitchen service area, and signage. Upgrades to the barn’s sewage and water system, paving the parking lot, and landscaping is also underway.

The grand opening of the Harris Barn is slated for May 25.

Affordable housing complex slated for Ladner Trunk Rd. ❙ Adrian MacNair reporter adrian@southdeltaleader.com

A non-profit housing company based out of Toronto is nearing a deal with a landowner that would bring affordable housing units to Ladner.

Omar Lalani of Options for Homes says their group has made an offer on the property at 5571 Ladner Trunk Rd.—currently the site of the Hong Kong Inn restaurant and Oki Doki Sushi at 55b Street—and is waiting to hear whether the owner will accept.

Options wants to develop a 30unit affordable housing project, similar to the ones they’ve already built in Toronto.

The site is already in the process of being rezoned to a accommodate a four-storey building with three levels of residential units and one level of parking. A public hearing and third reading on the site took place on May 29, 2012.

Lalani made a presentation at Ladner Pentecostal Church in front of about 100 people in November to gauge the level of support in the community. There was a 10 minute presentation followed by a public discussion.

A longtime advocate of affordable housing in Delta, Pastor Danny Ste-

beck said he thinks the venture is a noble one.

“My frustration is I get young couples in here and they want to get going and get started, get a job and buy a house,” he said. “I hate it when they say, I found a house in Mission.”

Stebeck said people can buy a house in other communities for the price of a one-bedroom condo in Delta.

“It’s one thing to create jobs but where are they going to live,” he said.

“You’re talking about a warehouse job where they’re going to get $12 an hour and driving from the far side of Surrey or outside of Cloverdale.”

The housing wouldn’t be for people on welfare either, Stebeck said.

It’s for people working entry level positions in Delta who want to live here as well.

Lalani said research has now given Options a good sense of the market need in Ladner and who some of homeowners might be.

“This site is close to transit and within walking distance of schools and grocery stores,” he said. “It is walkable, which is something that we look for.”

Options for Homes of Greater Vancouver is the local chapter of a Toronto-based affordable housing non-profit corporation that started in 1993. Options operates like any

market-driven housing developer without subsidies or donation, and simply builds housing that is geared towards those looking for an affordable home ownership option.

The main difference between Options and a profit-driven developer is that the non-profit company provides down payment assistance for its home owners through a shared-appreciation mortgage.

This is seen as one of the main barriers to access for first-time home buyers and effectively lowers the cost of homeownership, says Lalani.

The Vancouver chapter for Options was opened in 2010 by Lalani and Philip Chou.

“The challenge here with affordable housing is that land values are extremely high,” said Chou. “We are competing with private developers for the same pieces of land. Because we don’t have the same resources as them, we have to be a little bit more creative and entrepreneurial in how we operate.”

Condominiums are sold at cost before construction. Although it’s too early to know how much the units would be sold for, the Options website states a 660-squarefoot one-bedroom unit that costs $270,000 on the open market would cost about $190,000 through Options.

Delta council is supportive of a new 58-unit apartment development on 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen except for one major impediment.

They don’t like the colours.

Coun. Ian Paton raised an objection to the colour scheme of the building, citing comments made by some people at the public hearing.

“If we could give them some sort of earth tones, some sort of West Coast look with more of a Whistler or a Sun peaks look with more darks, browns, wood tones,” he said.

The building colour scheme is currently cement board siding in charcoal and blue colours with light beige brick accents. Composite panels in green will also be used as accent materials.

Paton led a motion to have staff work with the applicant to bring

back a more suitable colour scheme for third reading.

“It’s not Whistler, it’s Tsawwassen,” said Coun. Robert Campbell as he spoke against the motion. “I don’t believe in legislating taste into our bylaws. We can deal with design guidelines and other things as such, like we have in North Delta, but we bring those out when the process is started. Not at third reading.”

Campbell added he doesn’t think it’s the job of council to tell people what colour they can paint their building.

“I hate using the term slippery slope, but what are we getting ourselves into here,” said Coun. Bruce McDonald, adding there are design guidelines for form and character but taste and presentation is a personal preference. “Who’s going to say what shade of green is OK? Is moss green OK and lighter green not?” ❙ Continued on P.7

New face for Tsawwassen BIA Barb Westlake wants to bring the energy back to sleepy Tsawwassen

B

arb Westlake remembers when Tsawwassen was the place to be, and as the new executive director of the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, she hopes to inject some energy into her town, and once again make it a destination for shoppers and visitors.

“We’re all invested in making Tsawwassen a vibrant community,” she says.

“I’m hoping to tap into that.”

Westlake was most recently the coordinator for Deltassist’s Christmas Campaign. The non-profit organization had a record year for its Christmas Hamper

program in 2012, providing toys for 610 families with 783 children, the most ever.

Westlake says she comes from a family of entrepreneurs, so when she began her career as a school teacher in the 1980s in Penticton, it was only natural for her teach business education.

By the 1990s Westlake decided she had enough of teaching about business, and decided to go into business herself, opening up an import company with a wholesale retail outlet in Tsawwassen.

Westlake says she is looking at rebranding the BIA, and looking at improving connections with local community groups to help put on events, such as the much-loved Outdoor Movie Nights.

She says the BIA’s upcoming annual general meeting will help determine the the future direction of the organization.

“What we have to ask ourselves, is are we event-based, or are we business-based,” she says.

❙ VIEWPOINT Berner has no remorse for her actions That convicted drunk driver and child-killer Carol Berner has applied to the Supreme Court of Canada to appeal her sentence should come as no surprise.

Berner was found guilty in July 2010 of two counts of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm and two counts of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm, after losing control of her car on a Delta street, striking and killing four-year-old Alexa Middelaer and seriously injuring her aunt.

While the Middelaer family had sought at least a 10-year sentence for Berner, crown prosecutors had hoped for three to five.

However, the judge decided Berner regretted her actions and was unlikely to reoffend. She was given a two-and-a-half year sentence.

But as Berner’s actions now clearly show, the only thing she regrets is getting caught.

Her constant attempts to reduce an already lenient sentence are proof she takes no responsibility for her actions.

What’s worse, is that for the Middelaer family, who want nothing more than to move on with their lives, they must relive the pain and sorrow of losing their daughter every time Berner goes before the courts.

Of course Berner is entitled to due process, and it is her right to launch this appeal.

However, given the public apology Berner gave to the Middelaer family during her sentencing, her continued appeals constitute a slap in the face.

As Middelaer’s mother said, at the end of the day there’s a little girl who’s dead and she should be in Grade 4 right now.

But how many more children will die before the issue of drunk driving is taken seriously? In 2008, the year Berner killed Alexa Middelaer, there were 101 deaths in B.C. from alcohol-related automobile crashes.

How are we prevent future tragedies, if those who commit them know they will receive a mere slap on the wrist? What deterrent is there?

Berner clearly has no remorse for actions, and has learned nothing from this tragic episode.

Apartments’ colour none of Council’s business

o you like the clothes you’re wearing right now?

Well, you likely do, since you’re the one who’s wearing them. You picked out your clothes because you liked the colour and design and you are a consumer with the freedom to choose what you like.

So it goes with where you live.

Usually, people buy a house they like because it has a design and colour scheme that’s pleasing to their eye. If they don’t like it, they won’t buy it. That’s the beauty of free market capitalism.

The other thing that’s beautiful about capitalism is that if nobody likes a product because of its design or colours, the manufacturer will change it.

It should be just that simple but apparently it isn’t for our civic politicians.

Council spent the better part of 45 minutes Monday evening debating the colour scheme of a sorely needed apartment complex in Tsawwassen.

Three councillors and the mayor didn’t like the blue, green and yellow tones of the structure, so they sent it back to the developer asking that the colours be changed.

“If it was pink and purple would you change your mind,” asked Mayor Lois Jackson as she voted on a motion to change the colours.

Funny story: When I was 18 and got my first apartment with my wife, we wanted to paint the apartment a regal purple. The landlady was naturally not happy about the idea. She liked white.

But being young, we painted it purple anyway. The reception from friends and family to our colour scheme was as mixed as you’d expect.

For years, ours was the purple apartment one could see while walking along busy Ron-

cesvalles in Toronto. Passersby could see inside our living room from the street and so even strangers would admit they’d seen it when we’d describe where we lived.

When we finally moved away, the landlady told us the apartment rented in a day. Surprise, we were not the only the people who liked purple.

But look, this apartment building wasn’t going to be purple. Or pink. It was going to be green and blue and yellow, which are all tones which greatly remind me of Tsawwassen. Personally, I kind of liked the scheme.

And that’s the whole point, isn’t it? If you don’t want to live in a green-blue-yellow building (or a purple apartment), then don’t.

And if you don’t want to wear plaid or polka dots, then don’t.

Just don’t go around telling people what colours to like and what clothes to wear. After all, our municipal politicians weren’t elected for their fashion sense.

Letters to the editor VAPOR has it wrong Re: VAFFC not worth the risk, Feb. 28) The letter from VAPOR regarding the Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project contains errors and assertions that must be corrected.

The project is needed because the existing fuel delivery system is operating at capacity and is unsustainable. It consists of deliveries through a 43-year-old, 40-km pipeline from Burnaby supplemented by about 1,000 tanker trucks a month from the U.S. which travel through Delta on their route. Contrary to what VAPOR says, the truck deliveries are required.

Without them, planes will not fly. And without our project, any growth in fuel demand at YVR will depend on more cross-border fuel truck shipments to keep planes flying. Our project will replace the existing system with modern infrastructure having a smaller physical and environmental footprint and superior longterm performance. It includes a deep-water marine terminal, storage facility and a 15 km pipeline. It will require only three to five vessel deliveries each month, with none of the vessels larger than ships currently transiting the river. Each vessel will be double hulled, escorted by tugs and will have trained river pilots on board. It will also eliminate the truck deliveries through Surrey, Delta and Richmond.

VAPOR cites the last 10 years in asserting that passenger traffic through YVR is flat. That decade included the impacts of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the SARS epidemic and the worst recession since the Great Depression. Despite these significant global events, passenger traffic increased slightly over the period. And if the last 20 years are considered, passenger traffic at YVR increased by nearly 80 per cent, from

9.9 million people in 1992 to 17.6 million in 2012. While historical data is important, the airport and airlines need to plan decades out, and all forecasts show steady increases in passenger traffic. Our project is designed to meet this need long into the future. Also contrary to what VAPOR claims, we and the shippers are required by law to carry insurance. In the very unlikely event of a spill, a comprehensive statutory regime is in place to ensure timely and effective spill response, remediation and compensation. That regime is backed by substantial compensation funds in addition to the primary insurance funds carried by vessels and marine terminal.

All the concerns identified by the City of Richmond – notably with respect to marine and pipeline safety, pipeline routing, emergency response planning and an analysis of the other options – have been reviewed in depth through the rigorous four-year joint federal-provincial review of the project. The review record demonstrates that the project benefits are significant from a social, environmental and economic perspective and the risks are low. Further, despite what the city says, the review did not conclude that a fire boat or a new fire hall is required. Public safety and environmental protection are fundamental priorities for our project. It will be built to modern building, seismic, fire, and environmental codes to achieve the highest levels of safety and reliability.

The new fuel delivery system will contribute to YVR’s growth, strengthen its position as a gateway of choice for airlines, and allow it to continue as a strong economic generator for Richmond, the province and Canada.

MLA Vicki Huntington’s comments on the VAFFC jet fuel tankers in the Fraser River are totally in order. The airlines at YVR have been reckless and irresponsible to propose to put super tankers into the fragile and valuable Fraser River. In 1988 VAFFC tied to put much smaller barges of jet fuel into the river and that was soundly rejected by a properly constituted Federal environmental assessment. Unlike the present review process, that assessment indeed involved public hearings. The present review process by the BC Government has been non-transparent and has cut public input out of the review over the past year. The Liberal government has again stalled in its decison in that Richmond and Delta and over 90 per cent of the public are firmly opposed to tankers in the Fraser River. The project was stalled until after the May 14th election is over. It is hoped the next new government is more enlightened and will kill this irresponsible project. Like a broken record we keep hearing from the jet fuel tanker promoter, Mr. Pollard of VAFFC, that aircraft need fuel to fly. The public is not dumb and no one has opposed a safe and secure supply of fuel to YVR by an on land pipeline option.

If the protection of the Fraser River is a priority as Pollard states, why in the world would his fuel corporation be so determined to put super tankers of jet fuel into the river, build a fuel unloading terminal and store giant quantities of highly toxic and flammable fuel on the banks of the Fraser River?

The presentation by Mr. Pearson of the council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of B.C. (COSCO) was informative and well put together. The most amazing thing of all, however, was the large crowd that were in attendance. I stopped counting at 70, but was told by a library staff person that there were close to 100 people.

I commend Jeannie Cockcroft and her staff for so ably handling this large crowd by finding chairs for everyone, moving equipment around so that the power point could be viewed and for so quickly making copies of the handouts for us.

We are indeed fortunate to have this facility in our community and to see it being well utilized.

cean waters bet w e e n the mainland and the Gulf Islands are home to many marine mammals, including whales, sea lions, porpoises and dolphins. Two species of sea lion, the California and the Steller sea lion, are present in southern B.C. waters at this time of year. They can sometimes be seen swimming in the sea or hauled out on rocky islets and jetties.

Seal lions are much larger and noisier than the more common harbour seals, which belong to a separate family. Even from a distance, one soon hears the barking calls of California seal lions or the loud growls and grunts of enormous male Steller sea lions. They can raise themselves on their front flippers and turn their rear flippers forwards, so they are quite agile on land. Underwater, they are sleek, fast predators, feeding on herring, hake, octopus or rockfish. They are not at the top of the food chain, however, as they are hunted by transient orcas.

The histories of Steller and California sea lions illustrate the significance of human predation and long term, oceanic climate cycles on marine mammals. Steller sea

lions breed on the B.C. and Alaska coast and some disperse to the Salish Sea in winter. They were once aggressively culled through hunting and population control programs, but since 1970, the B.C. colonies have rebounded. This is not the case for the once abundant Gulf of Alaska populations, which have declined dramatically since the 1950s. The northeast Pacific Ocean has been undergoing significant ecological change and Steller sea lions, harbour seals and northern fur seals are all struggling to survive. With herring in short supply there, the sea lions feed on less nutritious fish, such as pollock.

Only male California seal lions spend the winter in B.C.. They often gather out on the 8 km Steveston jetty in spring. Until the 1960s, they were rarely seen locally. Their presence here now may be overflow from booming southern populations, or due to cyclical ocean conditions. California sea lions are recovering from nearly two hundred years of extermination in California and Mexico but are now thriving.

Teaching to student passions The Intelligence Quotient test, or rather, the IQ test, was invented 96 years ago and used as a predictor of educational achievement, special needs, and assessment of learning ability.

However, the system of learning in the public education system through which students are most often assessed, is not free of flaws.

There are many different kinds of intelligences that are neglected in the lesson structure.

Thomas Haney Secondary School in Maple Ridge, however, was built in step with a paradigm shift in the way kids ought to be taught.

Twenty years ago, the school helped pioneer a new teaching model, one that offers fewer structured classes and more free time, where students learn at their own pace, and have more of a say in what they are learning.

Thomas Haney approached my school, South Delta Secondary,

in the 1990s with its proposition for classes tailored to the students’ passions. A few concepts were picked up, but not all. Recently, several teachers from SDSS visited Thomas Haney to take a second, more in-depth look at this novel new learning style.

“There are pros and cons to any complex process or endeavor, and in that respect, Thomas Haney is no different than any other secondary school,” says Julie Lymburner, Delta School District’s Head of Fine Arts. “It’s a building structured for collabo-

ration... Throughout the school there’s a feeling of fun, freedom, power and belonging.”

The Thomas Haney campus is equipped with spacious rooms and work areas for everything from large group activities to small study groups. Students are given a pre-packaged curriculum at the beginning of the year so they may pace themselves and pursue what they love.

However, for this concept to work the way it was designed, students must be self-motivated, organized, and with a sense of direction. The

Does it not, then, make just as much sense to allow the students to teach themselves as well?

“As students are given opportunities to set goals, work independently and manage their lives, they will learn how to be successful in our dynamic, competitive world,” says Lymburner.

A core group of faculty at South Delta is already in the process of adapting to this new method, having already taken

small steps in the right direction.

I myself am enrolled in one similar class: Art Foundations 12, a self directed, portfolio-sculpting block; one which I can enjoy by myself, or with company, at my leisure, and one which I highly recommend to aspiring artists in high school.

This coming fall will be the beginning of a bright new future for the Delta District, and I sincerely hope all the students will rise to the occasion.

The Fraser Valley Regional Library led a delegation before Delta council Monday, indirectly responding to controversial remarks made by a councillor two months ago.

Coun. Ian Paton suggested in a January council meeting that libraries may be going the way of the video rental store, hinting they may become outmoded by technology and the rapidly expanding Information Age. “When people say, will there be libraries in the future, I talk about the libraries of the future,” said Gillian McLeod, library manager for the FVRL. “They will exist as a space, as a service. That tool that we use—whether it be an iPad or a computer or a book—may change.”

McLeod said libraries will still be used as gathering places regardless of changing technology.

“I do believe the services will

change and we are trained in recognizing those trends of the future and being ready for that when it does happen,” she said.

Paton thanked the delegation and said the information was enlightening. He also applauded the programs the library runs for seniors, children, teens, and new residents of Delta.

He said he intends to take Coun.

Jeannie Kanakos up on an offer to take a tour of Delta’s libraries in the near future.

“I really see that libraries play a fundamental in our democratic process in that access to information is important when we’re in a voting or decision-making process as a community or as a province or as a nation,” said Jeannie Kanakos.

Coun. Sylvia Bishop said the public library is about relationships, not only between staff and customers, but between customers themselves.

“I think that bodes well and supports a healthy community,” she said.

This year marks a milestone for all three Delta libraries. The George Mackie Library in North Delta is celebrating 30 years,

while the Tsawwassen Library celebrates 40 years, and Ladner Pioneer Library is turning 50.

October of 2013 is Libraries Month and there will be events held at each library in Delta, with a party scheduled for Oct. 26.

Tsawwassen Library faces 16 per cent rent hike The Tsawwassen Library lease renewal will cost the Corporation of Delta an extra $20,000 a year, according to documents released from a closed council meeting on Feb. 18.

The library, located in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, had a five-year lease agreement with Century Group which expired at the end of 2012. The terms were $15 per square foot per year at 7,920 feet, or $118,000 a year.

The new terms of five-year lease will see the Corporation pay 16 per cent more, or $17.50 per square foot per year, raising the rent to $138,600.

Delta’s total costs over the length of the lease will be $693,000.

Director on hand for screening of Peace Out Go Green Delta is screening award-winning B.C. documentary Peace Out on March 13, and director Charles Wilkinson will be on hand for a question and answer session.

The movie explores controversial energy projects in Western Canada including the Peace River Site C Dam project, tens of thousands of hydro-fracked shale gas wells, a nuclear power plant, and the Tar Sands. The documentary won for Most Popular Canadian Documentary at the 2011 Vancouver International Film Festival.

At a time of fierce debate over power development in Canada, this film explores the various aspects of energy costs while listening to opposing sides of the debate, says Go Green member Carol Vignale.

Coastal ferry users are braced for reduced sailings on some under-used routes, and many are open to cable ferries, barges, passenger-only vessels or even bridges where practical to contain rising costs.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak released the government’s consultation report Tuesday on ways to save $26 million on operations by 2016.

That was the target set by BC Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee after he was appointed last year.

About 4,000 people took part in the consultation, with more than half saying they agree with the need to reduce costs.

When the government announced the service review last year, it added

an extra $20 million to the subsidy for the service over four years, bringing the total taxpayer subsidy to about $180 million per year.

Polak said specific service cuts won’t be made public until June 30 at the earliest, and the government may extend that deadline after reviewing the consultation results with BC Ferries. She denied that the timing was chosen to push the unpopular move past the May 14 election.

“If the idea was to stay away from discussion of potential cuts during an election period, I daresay we would not have embarked on the consultation,” Polak said. “We were very up-front in putting out the utilization numbers so people can see where the challenges were and where there will

likely be cuts.”

Last year BC Ferries cut sailings on the Duke Point-Nanaimo run, which was losing an average of $50 per vehicle carried. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said the corporation expected to cut at least 100 sailings on its major Vancouver Island routes, mostly low-ridership runs late in the evenings.

NDP transportation critic Maurine Karagianis wouldn’t commit to increasing the taxpayer subsidy or any specific action, such as returning BC Ferries to Crown corporation status.

“If we treat it like transportation infrastructure, the same as bridges, rail, roads, that’s a slightly different approach to the ferry system,” Karagianis said. “At the end of the day, we need to see some cost

savings.”

As expected, raising property taxes or fuel taxes in coastal communities to help pay for ferry service was an unpopular choice, endorsed by only 20 per cent of participants. Most called for ferries to be funded by all B.C. taxpayers or by the users themselves.

A call for “innovative ideas” also produced few surprises. The top suggestion in consultation meetings and written feedback was to reduce fares to increase ridership, an experiment that BC Ferries has tried several times on major routes with no success.

BC Ferries has found that ferry use is declining on B.C.’s free inland ferries and other jurisdictions such as Washington state, as people choose to travel less because of the cost of fuel and other factors.

Sarah Daniels is the first to admit she’s had her fair share of lucky breaks throughout her career. But it’s what you do with those breaks that makes you successful, says the TV star and real estate guru.

Daniels, co-star of the HGTV show Urban Suburban and a South Surrey-based real estate agent, is emceeing the fifth annual Project Bloom event in Tsawwassen today (Friday, March 8). The event brings together women from all walks of life to share the secrets of their success, in honour of International Women’s Day. Daniels, who became well-known in the Lower Mainland as a traffic reporter with Global BC and CKNW, credits her success to making the most of the opportunities that have been presented to her. t h annual “For the most part, things have fallen into my lap,” she says. “But I’ve made the most of them.”

Daniels’ career in radio began in the mid 1980s. After a job in the stock

market didn’t work out, she found herself struggling to make ends meet.

A friend at CKXY radio in Vancouver tipped her off about a job on air as the station’s community events reporter.

There was only one problem, however. Daniels had absolutely no experience in radio or journalism, and had never even considered the idea of doing radio work before.

But with her friend’s help, Daniels managed to put together a demo tape, and was hired on the spot.

A university drop-out, Daniels admits she was less than truthful when applying for the job, but she was desperate.

“I told them I went to Queens, and spent a year at the student radio station, which was all BS,” she says.

“I figured I’d be there for a couple of months before they figured me out.”

As it turned out, the station’s program manager was the one to get fired, and the new management decided to keep Daniels on.

While she had a steep learning curve ahead of her, Daniels’ quick wits helped her adapt to her new environment.

But as her broadcast career neared the 20-year mark, Daniels says she knew it was time for a change.

ism background, I was never going to be an anchor,” she says. “But I didn’t want to be the world’s oldest traffic girl.”

So she took stock of her options, and again an opportunity presented itself.

The rules regarding the licensing of real estate agents had been recently relaxed, and agents were now allowed to hold part-time jobs outside of real estate.

Daniels managed to get her real estate agent accreditation in less than a month, and was soon embarking on a new career.

“My mom had bought and sold property, so I was already somewhat familiar with the business,” she says.

“People thought I was crazy to leave TV, but who cares what they think.”

During the week, Daniels would wake up at 3:30 a.m. and shoot Global BC’s morning show from 5:30 to 8 a.m., then return home to sell homes in the afternoon. On weekends, she had open houses.

After two years of working two jobs, often seven days a week, Daniels was able to devote herself full-time to real estate, and on June 30, 2005, she gave her final broadcast on Global BC.

A voice for those without Katrina Pacey has spent her law career protecting the rights of sex workers in Vancouver’s notorious downtown eastside editor@southdeltaleader.com

Long before lawyer Katrina Pacey became litigation director for Pivot Legal Society, she knew she wanted to devote her life to helping those unable to help themselves. Raised in a family that encouraged social activism, Pacey cites her mother, who was involved in the women’s movement, as one of her major influences.

“It was a very politically-aware environment,” she says of her home, growing up in Vancouver’s west side. “My mom was an important role model in my activism.”

After finishing a masters degree in Women’s Studies, Pacey saw law as a means to help give a voice to the residents of Vancouver’s downtown eastside and address the issue of violence against women.

“Activists need lawyers, but lawyers tend to be inaccessible and expensive,” she says.

Just a week into law school at UBC, Pacey became involved with the Pivot Legal Society and their campaign to address human rights abuses in the sex trade.

“I’ve always been involved in activism… but I heard this creative idea for ual a human rights organization,” she t h annsays.

“It was more of a concept than an entity at the time, but I knew I wanted to be involved.”

Today, Pacey is still with Pivot as their director of litigation, where she develops the organization’s legal strategy for Pivot’s campaigns and connects Pivot with the broader legal community. For the past decade, Pacey has devoted herself to ensuring all sex workers be able to work safely, without fear of violence, discrimination and social stigma.

“We’ve tried to get the Vancouver Police Department to stop arresting sex workers and be available when they are victims of violence,” she says.

The recent Missing Women’s Inquiry highlighted how devaluing women’s lives involved in sex work created an environment where 49 individuals could simply vanish from the downtown eastside with little initial concern for their safety and whereabouts.

Had they been treated as the human beings that they were, Pacey believes the problem would have been taken seriously, and many of the women would be alive today. “[The rights of sex workers] is the most major human rights issue of our time,” she says. “Sex workers have rights and they can come to Pivot if they feel those rights are being abused.”

Pacey says she finds working in Canada’s poorest postal code to be a daily

inspiration.

“It’s a beautiful place, and I derive incredible joy from work,” she says. “[Many of the residents of the downtown eastside] have survived incredible struggles... and it’s motivating to work with people so compassionate.”

While the world of law has traditionally been seen as an Old Boys’ Club, Pacey has managed to avoid that sexist domain. “[Law] is a male-dominated world, but I’ve woven my way through it,” she says. “I’ve always worked in really progressive work environments… but that’s not reflective of the profession.”

When Pacey’s daughter was born five years ago, Pivot allowed her to cut down her hours so she could strike a balance between her job and being a mother. However, she recognizes that many women in her field are not afforded that right.

“The culture and business of law isn’t supportive of [working mothers], which makes it very difficult for women in law,” she says.

Striking out on your own in business is always a risky endeavor, especially when your business idea is unique. But with risk often comes reward, and so it has for Samantha Reynolds.

Reynolds is the founder of Echo Memoirs, a custom book production and publishing company based in Vancouver.

Since the company began in 1999, Reynolds and her team of writers, graphic designers and bookbinders have created more than 250 visually stunning coffee-table books filled with the engaging stories and photographs that celebrate people’s lives and business histories.

Reynolds studied journalism at the University of Victoria, and spent the first few years of her career working in every aspect of professional writing, from public relations to freelance writing, to managing website content.

“But nothing really captivated me,” she says.

The turning point came when Samantha realized she’d failed to record her grandmother’s life story before she slipped into dementia following an operation. Samantha began recording the stories of family and friends and, encouraged by positive responses from her interview subjects, she turned her hobby into a fullt h annual time business in 1999. In the past 14 years, Reynolds says she’s learned some hard lessons on how to run a business.

“My first mistake was my enthusiasm,” she says. “I didn’t know how to say no to clients that weren’t the right fit.”

In those early years, Echo Memoirs produced wedding books, pet books, cook books. But Reynolds soon realized she had taken on too much, and the business was losing its focus.

“I was naive, and it depleted my energy taking on so much,” she says.

So Reynolds focused on projects that she enjoyed, and began to charge clients what her work was worth. After three years of working “pedal to the metal,” she was able to hire her first full-time staff member, and added a second staff member six months later.

“I struggled with hiring someone fulltime at first, but I’m so glad that I did,” says Reynolds. “I was able to offload a lot of my responsibilities.”

Being able to delegate has been one of the keys to growing her business.

“It’s the responsibility of a founder of a company to ensure the company will endure,” she says, and you can’t do that without giving up some control.

Today, Echo Memoirs has a staff of six full-time employees and a stable of more than 30 freelance writers, and does work for corporations and individuals across North America.

For Reynolds, starting a family has helped her grow her business further, by forcing her to delegate where she might not have before. After the birth of her son two years ago, Reynolds hired someone

“It was a slow process to find balance, but it’s really paid off,” Reynolds says.

“You have to surrender to the new normal of not being able to get as much done during the day as you used to. It’s just not possible to be as productive and efficient as you used to.”

While it can be challenging to transition from the fast and efficient professional world to the slow and chaotic world of a toddler, Reynolds says being able to laugh at yourself when you’re covered in vomit helps keep things in perspective.

Carol Miles Carol Miles owns and operates South Delta Heels in Ladner It took a trip to South Africa for Carol Miles to know where her business future was going.

While abroad, she saw a “divine pair of shoes” and thought to herself that a shoe store should bring them in to Canada.

“I didn’t whine or snivel about it,” she says of the seven-day work weeks it took to get her real estate career off the ground. “I worked like a dog. I was exhausted all the time. But you do what you have to do, so suck it up buttercup.”

The biggest roadblock women face in business is believing there’s a roadblock, she says.

“My opinion is that you have to just barrel through,” she says. “Don’t be offended and stop taking everything as a personal slight. There’s a lot of A-holes out there, and if you listen to them you’ll feel insecure or second guess yourself.”

Most of all, have a plan, and make sure it’s realistic. And if the path you’re on isn’t taking you where you need to go, don’t be afraid to change course and do something different “If you need to change the course, change the course,” she says. “Some people get so caught up in an idea, they can’t see anything else. If the path is blocked, figure out a way around it.”

“I worked my butt off for two years to get started in real estate, and at the time I thought I would never do TV again,” she says.

However, after authoring a pair of successful books on real estate - Welcome Home: Insider Secrets to Buying or Selling Your Property, and the Canadian edition of Buying and Selling a Home for Dummies - Daniels has approached with the idea of developing a real estate-themed television show.

The result was Urban Suburban. The show pits Daniels against her little brother, real estate agent Philip Dumoulin, as they offer homebuyers contrasting housing options: In the heart of the city, or in the quiet streets of the suburbs.

The show debuted in 2010 and was an immediate success, with the initial run of 13 episodes doubled to 26, and a second season added.

Daniels is currently working on concepts for a new show and hopes to be back on TV soon.

Marilyn Jones, upcoming Delta Hospital Auxiliary President After more than 36 years working at TELUS, Marilyn Jones, a retired Tsawwassen resident, brings a wealth of experience in the corporate world to the role as President of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. Marilyn joined the Auxiliary in 2009 as a Hospital Unit volunteer, greeting visitors and patients at the main entrance. Federal cuts kill Fraser habitat watchdog ❙ Jeff Nagel reporter newsroom@southdeltaleader.com

Federal funding cuts have forced the closure of an office that coordinates environmental protection in the Fraser River estuary and Burrard Inlet. Critics say it’s a fresh blow to habitat protection in Metro Vancouver that could concentrate more power to approve development in the hands of port officials. The Fraser River Estuary Management Program (FREMP) and Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Program (BIEAP) have stopped vetting shoreline development applications and will close their Burnaby office doors at the end of the month.

Port Metro Vancouver has stepped in to handle incoming project applications on a temporary basis until a new partnership model can be developed.

The move came after Ottawa chopped

about half of the $350,000 annual budget for FREMP and BIEAP, and follows earlier cuts to Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) staff here and across B.C. Former DFO habitat assessment manager Otto Langer said the decision continues a pattern of federal cutbacks and policy shifts that leave fewer safeguards in place for sensitive ecosystems.

“It’s a callous disregard for environmental protection,” Langer said. “When is all this going to stop?”

Langer said the loss of the FREMP/BIEAP coordinating role will reduce scrutiny and free Port Metro Vancouver to further industrialize sensitive areas.

“They’re given more and more authority to do whatever they want in the estuary,” he said. “Their legislated mandate is to develop and meet the needs of industry. It’s the wolf being put in charge of the sheep.”

Ladner’s Nancy Watson Willborn is in the running to be Kin’s Green Fighter and is gearing up for this week’s challenge.

With the help of Kin’s store staff, each Green Fighter will set up a booth at their designated Kin’s store where they will distribute literature on cancer prevention; collect “one thing” post-it notes from customers, pledging one thing that these customers can do to improve their health; and help store staff distribute samples (cut fruit, stir fry, etc) and balloons to the customers who visit the booth.

The contestant who collects the most post-it notes will win the challenge. If there is a tie, a winner will be drawn.

Other controversial projects under consideration include a jet fuel pipeline to the airport that would bring tankers into the lower Fraser River and a huge expansion of Deltaport. Metro Vancouver environment committee chair Heather Deal expressed “grave concern” with the closure and added Metro officials are working to be part of whatever solution emerges.

You can grow, eat, and compost your own food without the waste

T

he best thing about growing your own food is overseeing the entire process, from planting, growing, harvesting, serving, eating, and then composting.

And with the Corporation of Delta’s simple Green Can program, the food you grow doesn’t have to wind up in a landfill.

Those are all great reasons to eat salad for Delta’s communications director and Ladner resident Lauren Munden.

“I’m kind of known as the salad guru when I’m invited to parties and asked to bring something,” she says while preparing one of her favourite recipes, a butternut squash spring salad.

“I like its versatility because you can mix and match what you like,” Munden says of the salad.

Johnny Cash tribute band plays Tsawwassen Legion

Fans of the legendary Johnny Cash can catch a tribute performance at the Tsawwassen Legion tonight (March 8) at 7 p.m.

“It’s super convenient because you can have it on your countertop,” she says.

Because she uses a lot of fruit and vegetables in her recipes, Munden knows that the

adorable slap stick comedy that endeared June Carter to the world of country and western music.

A pair of South Delta hockey players got one step closer to fulfilling their dreams of playing in the NHL this week.

Josh Nicholls signed a free agent contract with the New York Rangers on Tuesday, while Taylor Peters was signed to a three-year entry level contract with the Dallas Stars on Monday.

Both players were linemates while members of South Delta Secondary School’s hockey academy.

Nicholls, 20, registered 41 goals and 32 assists for 73 points in 65 games with the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL this season. He is tied for fifth in the WHL with a career-high in goals, fourth in the league in shorthanded goals ( four), and 18th in points.

The six-foot-two, 196-pounder has skated in 326 career regular season games over five seasons with Saskatoon, registering 132 goals

and 169 assists for 301 points, The Tsawwassen, British Columbia native was originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs as a seventh round choice, 182nd overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Peters, 21, has played for the Portland Winterhawks in each of the last six seasons, collecting 111 points in 313 games. This year, the six-foot-three, 207-pound forward earned 37 points, 46 penalty minutes and a plus-24 rating in 62 games for the club, helping lead his team to WHL Final appearances the last two years.

Peters won the team’s Best Defensive Player Award and was also named a co-Scholastic Player of the Year.

“Taylor Peters brings size, good faceoff ability, strong defensive awareness and adds to our organizational depth down the middle,” said Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk in a press release Monday. “We look forward to watching him develop with the Texas Stars (AHL) next year.”

Considered among the fastest senior meets in Canada, the Dolphins sent an elite 11-member team led by 15-year-old Markus Thormeyer, who qualified for the U-17 A finals in all seven of his events, winning three medals, including one championship title in the 400m individual medley. His 100m backstroke time of 56.64 seconds qualifies him to compete at the World Championship Trials in Victoria this April.

Overall, the Dolphins finished 22nd out of 55 clubs at Westerns, and were the eighth-place B.C. team.

“Our swimmers showed grit and poise, and raced with intelligence and determination,” said WDSC head coach Ben Keast. “We hit a high-water mark for the club and we’re only halfway into the season. Much will improve between now and the summer.”

“The boys have shown that they could rise to the occasion of playing older teams,” said Coach Jack Torok. “In the first half of the season we played local U-12 teams and were very successful. I was concerned when the District moved us up again to compete at a more difficult level, but it didn’t even phase the boys, they just elevated their game from there.”

Torok said the key to team’s success has been its strong core group of players, whom Ladner FC recognized could compete at a higher level.

“I’m very proud of them and look forward to our California trip with the team in the summer,” Torok added.

Delta finished two points behind Richmond in the 2012-13 regular season.

South Delta tops podium Members of the South Delta Kyokushin Karate club competed at the Newton Coloured Belt Tournament in Surrey last weekend, with a number of members topping the podium.

Nine-year-old Nathan Spencer won six fights in his first-ever tournament to finish in first place in the U-13, 70-pounds and under division. Club members Hayden Reid, Katrina Strutt, and Caleb Naysmith also competed in that division.

Sebastian Saddul finished first in the U-13 71-90 pounds division, with Jackson Martin and Logan Turick both finishing third.

Keanna Foster was first in the U-13 91-110 pounds competition, while Logan Turick finished third in the U-13 71-85 pounds knockdown division.

Amber Fidyk was second, and Victoria Knoblauch was third in the U-15 girls competition.

In the adult heavyweight division, Jeff Somers finished first, while Dale Roberts was third in the senior men’s (35+) competition.
