Surviving in the renovation zone contractors for their proposed work schedules and organize your timetable in consequence. As renovators are generally more concerned by the quality of their work rather than the dirt and dust it produces, the contents of the rooms to be renovated should be removed, if possible, and other rooms protected from dust by closing their doors. Clothes should be stored carefully and perishable foods sealed to avoid them becoming impregnated with odours and dust.
Merging two apartment units, one above the other, in order to create a single family home is quite a job to undertake. The first thing to think about is where to open up the ceiling to link the two floors with a staircase. Once its location has been determined its size must be calculated depending, in part, on the type of upper floor you want: the opening could be limited to just enough space for the staircase, or it could create a large airy and open space in the middle of the new home.
If you have a pet you could try and find it a more comfortable and less traumatizing home for the duration of the renovations. If you have young children living with you, keep them busy with outdoor activities. Every evening throw out any debris, clean up accumulated dust, and secure the worksite to avoid any risk of injury.
If you opt for a second floor that is not visible from downstairs, it will be easier to be more daring with the colour scheme and create two areas with very different atmospheres or styles. For example, a contemporary style downstairs and a more vintage style upstairs. Some space will be lost if the second floor is under the roofline, but dormer ceilings are great for creating a country look.
It is up to you to decide if you want to get involved and supervise the work or give free rein to the contractors. The important thing to remember is that the experience has to be bearable for the home dwellers, all while ensuring that the end results are of the best quality.
If you have opted for an open space between the two floors, be sure to plan a harmonious transition when choosing your colours. Some elements of the ground floor can flow up into the new mezzanine. Ample ceiling height will give an impression of luminosity and magnitude. Windows instal led on
the second floor will allow sunshine to brighten up the entire house. The distribution of the rooms will depend on your needs, your daily activities, as well as the configuration and the constraints of the available space. You’ll have plenty of choices: your bedroom on the ground floor near the living room and dining room and the children’s bedrooms upstairs; the children’s rooms downstairs, away from the living room and your master bedroom and en suite bathroom upstairs; or the living room, kitchen, and dining room downstairs and all the bedrooms upstairs.

Plan well so you don’t get your feet wet! The installation of a new shower is a great deal easier if you are well prepared before staring on the job. If you’re doing the work yourself, make sure your tool kit is fitted out properly: putting in new fixtures requires some tools you might not have, and removing ceramic tiles and putting in new ones is not an easy job. You’ll also have to take care to waterproof everything in order to avoid the problem of leaks. If you decide to entrust this work to a contractor, familiarize yourself with the basics of bathroom renovation before meeting with him or her. That way you will know what they are talking about and if their budget estimate makes sense. Find out their hourly rate, availability to finish the job on a schedule, the materials they will require, their previous experience, and any
other questions that can help you choose a reliable contractor. Prepare the bathroom before the work starts. To avoid damage to countertops, toilet, and cabinets protect them with old, thick towels or cushions or protective cove rings. To cut contractor costs, remove the shower’s existing tiling yourself and scrape away all the grouting so that the surface is smooth. Old pipes and shower fixtures can be recycled rather than put in the garbage. Check the drainage and the infrastructure before waterproofing the walls and floor to prevent leakage. Cover exposed partition walls with waterproof panels. Choose tiling that blends with the colour and style of the existing décor. Many different elements should be considered when selecting a new shower head: its adjustability (pivoting, tilting, removability); water flow; type of jets (pulsating or therapeutic massage); and pressure adjustment. Take your time and choose a shower door that fits with your budget and décor (plastic, transparent, frosted glass, mirror) and the way it opens (sliding, folding, pivoting). For a roomier feel, choose a shower with a transparent glass door.
A good recipe for an organized kitchen Perhaps it’s time to rethink the organization of your kitchen storage areas if you have to waste precious cooking time rooting around in drawers and cupboards for the object you need. When dishes, utensils, pots and pans, small appliances, recipe books, and cleaning products all seem to be in the wrong place, it is practically impossible to work efficiently. It also likely means your kitchen looks cluttered.

To get better organized, start by creating compartments inside your cupboards. The height of adjustable shelves can usually be changed in order to reorganize the contents and maximize space. Alternately, create subdivisions by using plastic or steel bas-
kets, containers, and small shelving units. Install lazy Susans in the corner cabinets, and think about adding pull-out sliding systems so you can reach articles at the back. Hooks can be used to hang utensils and chopping boards inside lower cupboards. You could also opt for separators which allow serving plates, chopping boards, and lids to be stored vertically. Install storage modules on the inside of cupboard doors for cleaning products and brushes, sliding modules for the garbage and recycling bins, as well as racks for hand and dish towels. Add different sizes and shapes of compartments to drawers and stack two utensil trays on top of each other. Organize the worktop to tidily store everything you want to keep close to hand, such as the bread box, knife block, vases or decorative bowls, and appliances. Supports for foil and plastic wrap rolls, cups and glasses, hooks for oven mitts, and measuring cups could be installed on the undersides of wall mounted cupboards. A kitchen island gives extra storage possibilities.
A rainbow of possibilities Colour is certainly the central element in interior decorating, but it has to be used properly to create the desired effect. As a general rule, for open areas experts recommend the use of the same dominant colour, or another option would be to use a mix of colours of the same tone, which blend together harmoniously. If rooms are enclosed, the colours in all the communal living areas, such as the kitchen, dining room, living room, family room, and hallways, should complement each other, creating a flow from one room to the next. After this you could give each of the rooms a different accent colour. If you prefer to use contrasting colours, some kind of transition should be created by inserting a decorative element in the same colour as each of the other rooms.

Installing a door? Nothing to it! Installing a door yourself is a relatively simple operation. With the tools and materials listed here you’ll be fully equipped to get the job done: a door, of course, plus cedar shims, a set square, finishing nails, screws, hammer, level, screwdriver, drill, and retractable blade knife. The first step is to install the doorframe. Use the set square and level to ensure that it is perfectly straight. Slide a cedar shim under the door to support it and help you align it with the hinge mortises. Align the hinges with the mortises already cut into the door frame and screw them in. After this, the frame and the cedar shims can be fixed to the studs with 6.35 cm-spiral finishing nails.
Many different types of doors are available on the market: • Interior hinge or swing door: opens to one side, providing unimpeded passage. • Sliding door: fully opens with a translational motion (ideal for small areas). • Pocket door: disappears completely into the wall, providing extra space and light. • French door: usually of glass from top to bottom, allowing lots of light into the room. • Folding door: made up of several, narrow leafs that fold in on themselves, thus saving space.
Now the door should be screwed into place on the frame. Check to ensure that it is well adjusted and closes without difficulty. Insert cedar shims on the side where the door handle is. Cut off any excess with a retractable blade knife. Install moldings around the door on both sides. Nail them to the frame and wall studs. Fix the strike plate and the handle as well as the door stopper. All you need are cedar shims, a set square, finishing nails, screws, hammer, level, screwdriver, drill, and retractable blade knife.
