CA$HING I OUT ON HST

Alistair Waters ASSISTANT EDITOR

t has been said there is nothing as certain as death and taxes. While the former may be true, the latter, at least in B.C., has been proven to be less so. Take the case of the ill-fated Harmonized Sales Tax. Born in controversy, it fuelled the first successful use of the province’s public-initiated referendum law, it is widely considered to have cost a premier his job, it prompted the finance minister who heralded it to announce he is quitting politics and it was unceremoniously dumped by voters just over two years after it was introduced .

Twenty months later, those who oppose the HST are about to see it go and those who support it are lamenting its passing. On April 1, B.C., will return to the Provincial Sales Tax and federal Goods and Services Tax, ending the province’s short-lived experiment with the HST. See story on A3
