Local woman working abroad to see change Amanda Moore, employed in Ghana, aims to stop human trafficking

O

ne local woman is determined to make a difference when it comes to human trafficking in West Africa.

Amanda Moore, 28, has been working for the Enslavement Prevention Alliance – West Africa (EPAWA) as the director of development for about one year.

She has however, been helping in the poverty-ridden country for a number of years doing the same type of work.

She is in Red Deer until March 12 but is heading back to Ghana at the beginning of April.

The organization Moore is working for is small. She along with the executive director of EPAWA are the only people with the organization. Ideally, Moore said, there would be a team of 10 doing the work that needs to be done.

“We have a hotline where people can call and report cases to us. We conduct an investigation into the cases to collect evidence. Essentially we do what the police here would do as their initial legwork. We do that because the police don’t have the resources to do that in Ghana,” she added.

“We do it this way so that the police will take the case seriously because if the average person in a village somewhere – maybe a woman’s husband is beating her terribly every day for years and she went to the police. The police would basically tell her that they can’t do much or to go to the capital which is a 10-hour bus ride and then you can make a complaint. It’s pretty difficult.”

Moore and her supervisor will make a statement with the police on the cases they are investigating and will become witnesses in court.

Last year EPAWA dealt with 150 different cases. The type of cases Moore sees varies. She has seen cases such as one girl who was gang raped by three boys from her village. Another case included 10 children in an orphanage who had been abused who needed to be rescued. Other

cases include women and children—both boys and girls, who were forced into prostitution and who work in brothels. She also deals with cases where child labour is involved where children are sold to work on farms or on fishing boats.

EPAWA is working to start their own emergency shelter and clinic in Ghana.

“It would be Ghana’s only clinic for victims of sexual violence. The importance is looking to collect medical evidence that can be used in court. Right now there are little options if we need that done. We do aim to have the clinic and emergency shelter and then also a longer term rehabilitation centre.”

In terms of the danger of her work, Moore said she recognizes the risks are definitely there.

“We’re dealing with people’s livelihoods, their pride, their reputations. Definitely there is a sense of animosity,” she said.

“But the way we operate is fairly hidden, is fairly undercover. We work with investigative journalists who take the stories to the media if we feel it’s particularly sensitive. To the average person who doesn’t really know us but sort of hears about what we do, they think we help children.

They don’t really realize what we do.”

Eventually Moore would like to come back to Canada to continue work here as well.

“I look at how can I be in Ghana and address these issues when they are happening here too? I’m sensing a desire to become more involved here in different ways if I can. I don’t know exactly what that looks like yet.”

Moore is supported in part by CrossRoads Church in Red Deer to continue her work.

However, she is also looking for others who can financially help with her mission. She is committed to raising at least 75% of her own salary through personal networking.

Trial date set for man charged with homicide

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Trial dates have been set for a man charged with the murder of a young Red Deer woman.

Bashir Gaashaan, 30, is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful confinement and interfering with a dead body in connection to the death of Jenna Cartwright. The charges allegedly stem from March 30, 2011.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Cartwright, 21, of Red Deer was found in a ditch near Olds in May 2011. She was last seen in Red Deer on March 29, 2011.

Gaashaan’s trial will take place Feb. 4 – Feb. 21, 2014 in Red Deer.

Gaashaan is also charged with trafficking cocaine, assault, assault with a weapon, theft, possession of a weapon, evading police and failing to attend court. These charges are unrelated to the alleged murder.

Meanwhile, Gaashaan was arrested on June 13, 2011 in Thunder Bay after what RCMP describe as an exhaustive investigation involving about 30 police investigators and over 4,000 hours.

An arrest team of three police officers flew to the Ontario city where Gaashaan was arrested on the warrant and escorted back to Red Deer to answer to the charges.

He also had additional outstanding warrants for his arrest

totaling seven charges for unrelated matters.

Cartwright’s body was discovered at about 7 p.m. on May 3, 2011. The RCMP in Olds were advised about the discovery of a body in a rural location about 4 kms northeast of the town. The discovery had been made by a resident of the area who had been driving at the time. The body was seen lying adjacent to a roadway.

The scene was examined by the RCMP Forensic identification Section and the Calgary Major Crimes Unit was called in to assist in this investigation. The remains were removed to the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Officer who conducted an autopsy.

The results of the autopsy concluded that this death should be considered as a murder, but the actual cause of death is not being released. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION International Women’s Day Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s, which marked a time of expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw rapid population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

Back in 1908, women’s inequality was spurring them to become active in campaigning for change. That year 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

It sparked a movement that continued to see long-standing barriers break down.

And it’s remarkable to consider how sweeping the changes have been – one gauge of that is how widespread International Women’s Day is now.

It’s an official holiday in a range of countries including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.

The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc. with flowers and gifts. In some countries the day has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as role models in every aspect of life,

one could think that women have gained true equality.

But as the International Women’s Day web site points out, there’s much more to be done. The fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, improvements have been made.

There are female astronauts and prime ministers; school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family. And so, as organizers emphasize, the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from “Being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.”

Meanwhile, thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout the month to mark the achievements of women. Many groups choose different themes each year relevant to global and local gender issues.

If only those women who worked so hard to see this day established could see its international scope. But we can celebrate the legacy they left and work towards eliminating the inequalities that remain.

Alberta has been a one-trick pony for far too long As the United States government enters its period of sequestration and embarks upon substantial cuts to the federal budget, Canadians are left to wonder just what the impact will be on Canada’s economy, and more importantly, on the prospects of the American government approving the Keystone XL pipeline project.

The sequestration requires that over $80 billion be cut from the American federal budget and infrastructure projects will likely be among those delayed or halted entirely.

The Keystone pipeline is essential to Canada, both economically and politically.

Canada’s economic prosperity is highly dependent on its ability to export natural resources to large

Oil is very much at the heart of this economic strategy and recent events have reinforced an integral point: in order for oil to be profitable, the Alberta and Canadian governments must be able to sell and move it.

Without new pipelines, the risk of not being able to get the oil to market becomes more and more real.

Furthermore, the oil industry plays a central role in Canada’s foreign policy as it is an important

component in attracting foreign investment to the Canadian economy and a successful Canadian oil industry breeds consumer confidence and home and abroad.

The delay in the approval for the Keystone pipeline was not entirely negative, however, especially in the Alberta context.

For far too long the Alberta government has relied almost solely on the oil industry for its prosperity and the current turmoil surrounding Alberta’s provincial budget is a perfect example of why economic diversification is vital to a sustainable economy.

There is no doubt that resource extraction and agriculture are Alberta’s economic lifeblood, but the current fiscal crisis the province is facing is

greatly exacerbated by a government not doing a good enough job of expanding the provincial economy in ways that would mitigate budgetary disaster in the event that oil markets slowed.

Alberta’s current financial instability – the government made a critical error in overestimating oil revenues, and now faces a multi-billion dollar shortfall – does no favours to the prospects for the Keystone pipeline being approved, and the province’s leaders face significant questions about the its handling of the oil industry and fiscal projections.

Alberta now has the opportunity to reflect on its economic mismanagement, although unfortunately it comes far too late to save Albertans and Canadians

from at least a short-term economic hit.

The reasoning behind a delay in Keystone’s approval is far more political than it is economic or environmental.

There is little doubt the Obama administration will sanction the project, but it cannot be done so quickly as to sacrifice the Democratic Party’s green base.

Its sole reason for delaying the project was political calculation as it works to appease the environmental elements of the Democratic Party while determining how to best approve such a major project in the midst of sequestration and ongoing budgetary brinksmanship with Congress.

But conspiracy theories about environmental disaster were recently set aside by a U.S. State Department

report that claimed the pipeline project poses no significant environmental risk, thus providing another pivotal element in the American government’s path to approving the project.

Regardless of economic circumstances in the United States, Canada or Alberta, the Keystone pipeline is bound to become a reality, and rightfully so.

The benefits of the project far outweigh any over exaggerated environmental arguments by the green movement and will play a significant role in the economic and foreign relations between the United States and Canada.

Keystone is a matter of when, not if.

This week, Express reporter Erin Fawcett has asked Councillor Paul Harris questions regarding one of council’s six strategic directions – dialogue.

One of council’s six strategic directions is ‘dialogue’. What’s this all about and what will it mean for the community?

“Mid-2011 council identified six themes, based on each councillor’s individual conversations with citizens, to guide their work and the work of administration in the future. Each of these themes became an official ‘charter’ and lead to a work plan designed by administration achieve the community vision as understood by council,” said Harris.

The short version of those themes are: Economy - shift our primary economic development focus and activity to within Red Deer; Design - design and plan our community to reflect our character and values; Movement - design for and facilitate integrated movement; Identity - identify and promote our Red Deer identity; Safety - enable and promote a safer community and Dialogue - engage our community and enhance our relationships.

“Over the past two years, time was taken to develop clear charters. Each of which were approved by council before work began. Administration was careful to stagger the implementation of each so that the organization had the resources and people available to be successful. No organization can do everything all at once and still do it well,” said Harris. “This week council will have a briefing of the progress of the Dialogue Charter which is just getting underway.”

He added during his last election campaign and throughout his community consultation work before that, some citizens he spoke with felt that they weren’t always being heard by administration or by City council.

“Some people feel that they haven’t been heard if they don’t get their way, others feel that they have. I think of the fluoride debate last year. After that, even though council decision didn’t go the way some of the citizens wanted many still commented afterward that they felt they were listened to thoroughly,” said Harris.

“It was in that debate that I heard over and over again from citizens that the role of council is to gather all of the best information available and then to make the most informed decision possible, and trust the wisdom of council will prevail. The assumption is that council values, respects, and trusts the decisions of council as whole.”

He added after any decision some people will be pleased and some will not.

“It’s a paradox to be sure. The goal must always be to do make the best decisions for today, with a focus on growing gracefully into the future,” said Harris. “It’s about knowing that the community is constantly changing and that old ways of doing things won’t always serve us well in the future. Consider the shift in the way we must build our City to be financially and environmentally sustainable. Policies that created urban sprawl cost us all even though we once believed that we’d always have land and money. We’ve learned recently that with every old-style suburb built we must raise taxes City-wide to afford services they need. This is not sustainable in today’s economy.”

He added all of this brings us to ‘Dialogue’.

“The community as a whole needs to participate in the decisions that lead to its evolution. Citizens, council, and City administration must consciously work together to improve the quality of life here in our great City,” said Harris. “Dialogue isn’t about asking ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions to complex questions like fluoride, wards, suburbs, roads, or any other idea. It’s about a thorough a complete discussion among us all about the benefits, challenges, strengths, opportunities, and weaknesses of any policy or program. It’s not about jumping to solutions without a deep and thorough understanding of what is lost and what is to be gained.”

I’ve been noticing that many places/ people that are advertising rental properties, are constantly saying that they don’t want pets.

I’ve also noticed that (not as many) places also say, “No kids”. I have been on Kijiji (not their fault by any means) and there are lists upon lists of want ads for family and pet friendly rental properties. I find this incredibly disturbing and discriminating.

I would imagine millions of people use the Internet as a means of reaching out for a place to rent. So you can imagine how many more families are in this predicament who are not using the Internet as their means of reaching out. I can understand paying a reasonable one-time pet fee in case the owner is not responsible for their pets, and yes, sometimes the properties can get extremely damaged.

There are, however, responsible pet owners, that have only small animals at that.

It’s heartbreaking to see the advertisements from single parents who have children, who have pets, and they are in dire need of a reasonably priced place to rent.

Having a pet when one of the parents is absent (for whatever reason) can be extremely therapeutic, and kids who have disabilities on any level, benefit greatly from having a pet. It can be detrimental to a child’s emotions (especially if the pet has been a lifelong companion) to have to give it away or put it down because all you see is “No pets, no kids, no pets, no kids”. It’s devastating for any family. It contributes to the overflowing ‘unwanted and aban-

doned’ pet situations.

I had a lady tell me that because I had a dog it immediately, without discussion disqualified me from staying at that park.

Not her rules, (she owned the mobile, but…), discouraging and maddening to say the least. My cat is an indoor cat, fixed, and we’ve had her for 10 years, before my boys were around. She jumps into bed with my autistic son and when he falls asleep, sometimes she will stay with him all night and other times she comes out to sit with me. We’ve had a tiny miniature dachshund for two years, fixed, who also stays inside and comes for drives with us unless we are going somewhere where she cannot come.

She stays in a kennel if we have to go out of town.

I know people who are not pet owners and they have no kids and their houses are extremely dirty and smelly – nothing but bacteria-ridden filth. They do nothing to keep their units clean, and they have actually caused more damage than pets!

I find that landlords in general get away with a lot of things. The place where we are now is becoming questionable and we have no 24-hour contact if something happens.

The prices you pay to rent are getting ridiculous. Who can afford to pay $1,700 (or more) a month, plus utilities? Mortgages are cheaper, but who has enough money after paying for bills and rent nowadays to save for a down-payment?

Traffic light woes in the City I am just going to get right to the point.

I am fed up with the timing of the traffic lights in Red Deer as well as the recent placement of two new sets. Driving the speed limit only seems to penalize a person more.

I’ve driven around many cities, large and small, and Red Deer is by far the worst. Ten kilometres should not take half an hour to drive in a city this size especially when it’s during a low traffic period of the day.

My second issue is with the lights on the corner of 30th Ave. and 67th St.

Can someone please explain why the existing intersection wasn’t good enough?

It seems to me that designing Clearview Ridge so that it only had three exits and using the existing set of lights on the corner would have been far cheaper and less of a hindrance to traffic flow than building two new sets.

We all have enough stress in our lives as it is, why do the City planners insist on adding to it?

Lawrence Lee announces bid for City council seat

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Lawrence Lee, chair of the Red Deer Public School board, will be on the list of candidates for City council this fall.

Lee, a married father of two, was first elected to the board in 2004, and he has served as board chair for the last three years.

He has lived in Red Deer for almost his entire life. He is also employed with ALA

Capital Inc. as a senior analyst.

“I thought it might be time to take the skill set I’ve gained in the school board and make that available to the City,” he said. Building and maintaining healthy relationships with various stakeholders is one of those key skills that would be beneficial, he said.

“I’ve really learned that on the provincial stage because school boards are very reliant on the provincial

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES INCREASE IN PAY City council approved a 3% pay increase to nonunionized employees which includes department managers, superintendents, supervisors, directors, the City manager, the mayor and council.

City officials said the increase is pay is reflective of the economy in Alberta.

“Three per cent might not seem like a lot but it is. I think with what is happening in the province there shouldn’t be an increase,” said Councillor Chris Stephan.

Council approved the increase in pay with Councillors Buck Buchanan and Stephan opposed.

The pay increase is retroactive to Jan. 1st.

Councillors now make

$53,163. Before the approval it was $51,615. The mayor’s salary is now $89,284, compared to $86,684 from last year. The City manager’s salary also increased to $216,216, up from $209,919.

Lee also serves public school education at the provincial level as a director for the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta.

Red Deer City council has decided they will not make a bid for the 2016 Alberta Winter Games.

Although the decision was split amongst councillors, most felt that because the City has already agreed to bid on the 2019 Canada Winter Games, the City would concentrate on that particular event.

The City will know by late 2014 where they are at in terms of their bid to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games. “I’m not sure it’s a good idea to put all of our eggs into one basket. We have the current facilities to host this and I think it would give our volunteers a chance to build up before the 2019 Winter Games,� said Councillor Chris Stephan.

Councillor Buck Buchanan agreed. “What happens if we don’t get the 2019 Winter Games? For the community’s sake I think it’s always a good thing to make a bid.

We do have the facilities to host the events. Right now this is what is in front of us.

Councillor Tara Veer said she didn’t think the City

should bid on the event. “All of the other sports events we’ve bid on have been citizen-led initiatives.

This is coming from the province as they are looking for interest. I don’t think we are losing out because there will be other events that will be held.�

Councillor Frank Wong as well as Buchanan and Stephan opposed the motion to not bid.

Meanwhile, late last year City council decided to move forward in the bidding process for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

This is not the City’s ďŹ rst attempt to host these Games. Red Deer was shortlisted in 1995.

If Red Deer is selected to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games, the City will see upwards of 3,400 athletes compete over the two-week event and see an economic impact of over $100 million.

The Games would include 20 sporting events such as alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, gymnastics, snowboarding, speed skating, table tennis and wheelchair basketball, among others.

As for timelines, this month the 2019 sport selection process will be completed and the ofďŹ cial

launch of the City’s bid will be in June. By December, the short-list of bid cities will be announced and in the summer of 2014, if Red Deer makes the short-list, there will be an on-site visit by the Canada Games bid evaluation committee.

In the fall of 2014 the announcement of the city who will host the 2019 Canada Winter Games will take place.

Last year when the City agreed to make a bid, Darcy Mykytyshyn, consultant for the project, said the federal and provincial government will also support Red Deer if a successful bid was made. “The funding formula is an $11.1 million investment from the provincial government and an $11.1 million investment from the federal government,� he said. “The City would invest $3 million to enhance facilities and they would also supply the cost of the balance after the federal and provincial government contributions,� he said, adding the committee estimates the City will end up contributing about 8% of the cost to host the Games and the City could look to sponsorship to help reduce that cost. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Further delay in case of man charged with drunk driving

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express More time is needed in the case of a man who is charged with drinking and driving.

The crash killed a 13-year-old boy on Canada Day in 2010.

Last month the trial of Rodney Arens, 35, which was set to begin later this month, was adjourned.

Arens of Red Deer is charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, three charges of refusing to provide a breathalyzer sample and breach of recognizance. He has plead-

ed not guilty to all of the charges.

Last month, the Court of Queens Bench heard that Arens no longer had a lawyer.

He had previously obtained Will Willms of Red Deer.

His trial was scheduled to take place from March 25 to May 17. Now that it has been adjourned, it is not likely another one will take place until next year.

On Monday, Arens told court that he had hired a lawyer and was in the process of ofďŹ cially obtaining his new counsel.

The case was put over until April 8th where new trial dates are expected to be set.

COURT BRIEFS TIME NEEDED FOR ASSESSMENT REPORT More time is needed for a psychiatric assessment report to come back for a man accused of killing his father.

The assessment will help determine whether or not Aaron Guilbault, 31, is ďŹ t to stand trial and if he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the offence.

Guilbault has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of his father Timothy Guilbault, 58.

Aaron was arrested in his father’s vehicle near Stettler a few hours after Timothy’s body was discovered, RCMP have said.

Aaron will return to court April 3rd.

POLICE BRIEFS RCMP MAKE ARREST IN BANFF ROBBERIES Red Deer City RCMP have arrested two men in connection with robberies in Banff.

On Feb. 22nd at 8:45 p.m., Banff RCMP responded to a robbery on Banff Ave. The female victim was walking near Fox St. when two man grabbed her, took her purse and then ed on foot. A short time later, a second similar robbery occurred. The second female victim was walking near Rabbit St. when the two men grabbed her purse.

The woman was pushed to the ground, ripping the purse strap, allowing the suspects to ee.

The male suspects were not known to either woman.

Banff RCMP believe that a third robbery occurred shortly after 9 p.m., near the 300 block of Banff Ave., however at this time, the victim has not come forward to police.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the two male suspects were driving a Mercedes SUV that had been previously reported stolen during a robbery in Calgary earlier in the day. The stolen Mercedes and the two

suspects were tracked to a residence in Red Deer. Red Deer City RCMP located and arrested the two men.

Maxime Banville, 20, from Red Deer, has been charged with two counts of robbery and one count of possession of property obtained by crime.

Cody De Coteau, 23, from Edmonton, has been charged with two counts of robbery.

RCMP SEEK SUSPECT IN VEHICLE FIRE On Feb. 28th at 11:20 p.m., the Red Deer City RCMP along with the Red Deer Fire Department responded to a vehicle ďŹ re at 33 St. and 50 Ave. It is believed that the vehicle was deliberately set on ďŹ re. Anyone with information that can assist the police in their investigation is asked to contact Red Deer City RCMP at 403-343-5575.

SIX CHARGED WITH DRUG OFFENCES A number of individuals have been charged after RCMP executed a search warrant on a Clearview neighbourhood home.

The search warrant was a result of a criminal investigation into drug distribution and organized crime.

Six individuals were arrested and charged, three of which are under 18 years of age and cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police have charged William Sinclair, 18, Donovan Nepinak, 18 and James Mason, 19, of Winnipeg, Manitoba with various charges including possession for the purpose of trafďŹ cking.

RCMP INVESTIGATE STOLEN PROPERTY In the early morning hours of Feb. 23rd, a suspect or suspects entered the Peavey Mart located at 2410 50th Ave. and stole numerous items including a generator and a plasma cutter.

On Feb. 26th a trafďŹ c stop was conducted by Red Deer RCMP and the generator and plasma cutters were located in the vehicle.

Subsequent to this trafďŹ c

stop, a search warrant was conducted on a residence in Sylvan Lake where a large quantity of stolen property, over $10,000, from Red Deer was located.

Christopher Davis, 35, of Red Deer has been charged

with two counts of break and enter, ďŹ ve counts of possession of stolen property, two counts of possession of break in instruments, one count of mischief and two counts of breach of undertaking. Jaret Szoke, 35, of Sylvan Lake has

been charged with break and enter, ďŹ ve counts of possession of stolen property, possession of break in instruments, breach of probation and mischief.

Charges are pending against a third suspect.

Canadian Pickers headed to Central Alberta

BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express Canadian Pickers Sheldon Smithens and Scott Cozens are headed to Alberta mid-March looking for collectibles and antiques – the odd and the unique.

“From our perspective, if you’ve got stuff like we buy on the show we’re ready to come and pick it from you,” said Cozens.

The hit TV series, Canadian Pickers, has drawn much attention across the country as Smithens and Cozens travel from province to province acquiring items both for resale, auction, or at times, for a specific buyer.

“There are certain items that we have a buyer for before we even find or purchase the item. Right now though we’re on a mission for a celebrity figure to outfit their home in western gear,” said Cozens.

People are asked to email the duo if they feel they have a particularly intriguing collection of items or an assortment of antiques for them to poten-

tially purchase.

Smithens said there are certain things they look for in each province or that there are things that are more prominent in one province over another.

“In this area we’re always on the lookout for North West Mounted Police and railroad associated items as well as anything unusual or historical,” said Smithens.

This won’t be their first filming in Alberta either as they did picks in Penhold and Wetaskiwin in previous seasons. “We just like Central Alberta. I mean really, what’s not to like?” said Smithens.

Both men said they enjoy what they do and Smithens said nothing gives them more joy than someone who comes up to tell them that they enjoy watching the show as a family.

“It’s the thrill of the hunt to find the stuff but the real enjoyment comes from meeting the people that we do along the way. There are some really interesting people out there,” said Cozens.

They added while they’re excited to be heading back to Alberta, they also enjoy the travelling they get to do.

“Some people tell us they love the show because they love the travelling we do. They maybe don’t get to go to the east coast but they get to see it through our eyes. It gives us a lot of pleasure when people tell us it feels like they’re on the road with us,” said Smithens.

The pair have a warehouse in Calgary where their acquisitions are held and Cozens said they’re especially looking forward to their auction during their stay in Alberta.

“The auction will be a big selection of stuff that I’ve bought and collected over the last 40 years. I have three kids and the two little ones are too big to share a room so I had no other choice but to clear out my antique room and sell my personal collection,” said Cozens.

The City and Red Deer County have worked hard to protect their heritage and it is proven by the quality and variety of nominations since the awards were launched in 2002, officials say. The Heritage Preservation Committee is proud to highlight these projects and the citizens who work to preserve and promote heritage.

The Heritage Preservation Committee is an advisory committee to City Council made up of six members of the public who are appointed for a twoyear term, and a member from the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery, the Waskasoo Environmental Education Association, usually the executive director of the Kerry Wood Centre and also a member from the Central Alberta Historical

Society. They meet once a month to discuss all types of heritage issues.

There are five nomination categories, including a new category that recognizes non-professional youth under the age of 25 who have made special contributions to heritage.

Heritage Community Development Coordinator Janet Pennington said, “We are really excited about that because we have never had that before. We are really going to go out this year and target youth groups: the scouts, the girl guides and sports groups so we can also help them not just celebrate the heritage of this City, but celebrate their own culture and heritage too.

“And I think that that’s very important.”

In addition to the new youth category the other

categories include: individuals or groups that have demonstrated outstanding efforts or achievements in the restoration, rehabilitation, continued maintenance or development of a new use of the interior or exterior of a heritage building, structure, landscape or natural feature.

- Individuals or groups that have demonstrated outstanding efforts or achievements in the development of a new building or landscape feature to sensitively fit into its heritage.

- Individuals or groups that have demonstrated outstanding efforts to preserve, enhance or revitalize communities, neighbourhood, natural and built landscape features or other historically significant sites.

- Individuals or groups that have demonstrated

leadership in community preservation efforts, significant heritage interpretation, publication, research, advocacy or education.

The deadline for nominations is April 30 at 3 p.m.

The Heritage Recognition Awards presentation will take place on Sept. 27 as a part of Alberta Culture Days celebrations.

CITY BRIEFS AIRPORT ADDS DESTINATION Red Deer Airport welcomed Northwestern Air’s first flight that includes Abbotsford as a destination on March 3rd.

CITY HOSTS AWARDS BANQUET Last week more than 100 City employees were recognized at the 32 annual Employee Recognition Awards Banquet.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Bob Stollings Memorial Award.

This award, established

by City Council on Jan. 21, 1985 to honour Robert E. (Bob) Stollings, a loyal and dedicated employee of The City of Red Deer from 1960 to 1984, is presented annually to an employee who has displayed outstanding civic performance in alignment with the City’s Cornerstone Values - Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence.

This year’s recipient of the Bob Stollings Memorial Award was Patti Malone, human resources specialist for the City of Red Deer. Malone has been employed with the City of Red Deer for over 23 years.

She began her career with as a benefits administrator in treasury, financial services, before moving on to human resources as a specialist

dealing with the benefits and pensions. Employees were also recognized in the categories of long service, safety, and special recognition.

RENOVATIONS AT DOWNTOWN LIBRARY The downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library is getting a new look.

Upon completion of Phase 1 (scheduled for March to mid-April), library members will notice a revitalized main floor with bright new spaces, a new more efficient services desk, new café furniture and the downtown branch’s first self-checkout.

“The downtown branch is one of the busiest buildings in Red Deer,” said Cory Stier, RDPL’s assistant director.

“This project allows us to keep the building fresh and inviting for all Red Deerians. It also allows us to significantly improve our energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint through the installation of much more energy efficient lighting on our top floor.”

The library will be open for business during the renovations, Stier adds.

However, as the first phase of construction takes place on the main level, the north doors and the north book drop will be off limits to customers who will be redirected to use the south doors and the book drop located there.

During the second phase (scheduled for mid-April to mid-June), level 2 will be closed to the public.

Library members will still have access, although limited, to everything typically available when they visit the downtown branch.

Staff will set up a small, temporary collection of nonfiction materials on Level 2 of the Library and four public Internet stations will be relocated from Level 4 to the Link Bridge.

WANTED: BACKYARD COMPOSTERS It’s a sure sign that spring is around the corner – the City’s Environmental Initiatives team is ready to turn the soil on another year of the backyard composting program.

Just in time for the gardening season, 200 households are wanted to sign up to compost in their own backyards.

Participants will be provided with a free compost bin, kitchen catcher and training on how to compost.

More than 250 households signed up last year as part of the first successful year of the backyard composting program.

“Last year, we found that many people had always been interested in composting, but didn’t know how to start. We eliminate the barriers to backyard composting by offering the tools and providing the expertise,” said Lauren Maris, environmental program specialist.

CITY INSPECTION REQUESTS ONLINE It’s easier than ever for contractors and homeowners to request an inspection on their permitted project with the City of Red Deer’s new, online inspection request form.

“This improves accessibility for users since contractors can now submit their inspection requests while still on site, provided they have Internet access,” said Inspections, Enforcement & Building Supervisor Paul Holmes.

The contractor will receive a confirmation notice that the request has been received and have the option to receive a notification that the inspection has been booked if they provide their email address.

Inspections are required before completing permitted work on construction projects to ensure that the project conforms to City bylaws, and health and safety standards as outlined in the Safety Codes Act. Inspection requests include mechanical, building, and electrical.

Users need to provide their permit number, address of inspection, type of inspection, and the date of inspection.

Inspection requests must be received before 3 p.m. to be booked for the following day.

The new form does not replace the 24-hour Inspection Request Hotline; contractors and homeowners can still request inspections via telephone at 403-3098485, email at inspections@ reddeer.ca, fax at 403-3428200, or in person at City Hall.

A look at several Red Deer women in politics On March 8th, the Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.), together with The Hub and Gramma-Link - Africa, will be celebrating International Women’s Day. The local theme this year is ‘Women In Politics’. Since 2013 is also the centennial of the incorporation of the City of Red Deer, this is a particularly opportune time to reflect on the many remarkable women who had provided leadership in our community.

Despite some of the stereotypes that some people may have about our City, Red Deer has a fairly progressive record in terms of women’s involvement in electoral politics.

In 1901, when Red Deer was incorporated as a town, all unmarried women and widows owning property were given the right to vote.

In 1913, when Red Deer was incorporated as a city, the franchise was extended to all women ratepayers. This was a few years before the right to vote was given to women in provincial and federal elections.

In 1921, Laura Irish became the first woman to run for public office and

DAWE missed getting elected to the public school board by only 10 votes. In 1926, Edith Ellis-McCreight became the first woman to get elected when she became a public school trustee.

Mrs. Isabel Smith, with the backing of the Home and School Association, was elected to the public school board in 1946 and remained on the board until 1953. In October 1955, Margaret Parsons was elected to the public school board and became the first woman chair of the board in October 1959.

In the 1961 municipal election, three women connected to the Red Deer Local Council of Women decided to run for public office. Kathleen deLaunay, the L.C.W. president ran for the hospital board. Mrs. Mary Martin, a resident of Red Deer since 1936 and an employee of the provincial

welfare office, decided to run for City council.

The third candidate was Ethel Taylor. She had already made a name for herself as a very active community volunteer. In learning that she was planning to run for City council, the Red Deer Advocate wrote that she was “One of Red Deer’s best known women and an indefatigable worker in the fields of service work, music, politics, welfare and crafts.”

Taylor was successful, getting 2,240 votes and finishing sixth out of the field of 17 candidates. Martin also did well, but finished below the eighth spot required to get elected. While not formally connected with the L.C.W., Parsons cruised to an easy re-election on the school board, while Pat Rouselle, a local teacher, won her first term on the Red Deer Catholic school board.

Unfortunately, deLaunay was edged out in her bid for the hospital board.

Over the subsequent five decades, many women have been elected to office.

For example, after Taylor’s success in becoming the first woman member

of City council, Parsons, Doris Jewell, Anna Parkinson, Rosemary Gerdts, Olly Robson-Webb, Irene Shandera and Gail Surkan were elected over the next 30 years. On Oct. 20th, 1992, Surkan was elected mayor of Red Deer, the first woman in our community’s history to hold that office. The City responded well to her leadership. She was re-elected by acclama-

tion in 1995 and was easily re-elected in the contests in 1998 and 2001.

In 2004, when she decided to step down, her 12 years as mayor tied the record set by her predecessor, Bob McGhee.

In 2000, Mary Anne Jablonski became Red Deer’s first woman MLA. Other women to hold the position of MLA in Central Alberta are Judy Gordon,

Shirley McClellan, Connie Osterman, Kerry Towle and Helen Hunley. Hunley became Alberta’s first woman Lieutenant Governor in 1985 and Shirley McClellan became the first woman deputy premier in 2001.

At present, roughly half the members of City council, Red Deer Public School District and Red Deer Catholic Regional Division are women.

Red Deer Rebels topple Hurricanes in blood drive Western Hockey League rivals the Red Deer Rebels and the Lethbridge Hurricanes took the battle from the ice to the clinic to see who could bring in the most blood donations last month.

The two teams partnered with Canadian Blood Services to help ensure local patients get the blood they need. Both teams rallied their fans to help save lives by donating blood. The challenge ran from Feb. 1-28th.

The Rebels have managed to bring in a total of 249 blood donations while the Hurricanes were close behind with a total of 218 blood donations, said Tanya Paul, community development coordinator with Canadian Blood Services’ Red Deer office.

“We would like to thank the Red Deer Rebels, their dedicated fans and the

residents of Red Deer for supporting this campaign.

Every minute of every day someone in Canada needs blood and the true winners in this challenge are the local hospital patients in need.”

Officials remind the public that the need for blood remains constant. According to the Canadian Blood Services, a recent poll shows that 52% of Canadians say they, or a family member, have needed blood or blood products for surgery or for medical treatment.

Therefore, new donors are always in demand. According to CBS, despite the growing population the number of active donors in Alberta has only increased by 1% over the past 10 years. Only about 3.5% of eligible Canadians donate blood which makes recruiting new donors important.

Donors must be at least 17 years of age, in general good health, and feeling well on the day of their donation.

Canadian Blood Services collects about 850,000 units of blood annually and processes it into the components and products that are administered to thousands of patients each year.

Innisfail area pioneers honoured with naming of lake People around Innisfail have been calling it Adams Lake for almost 95 years, but now it is official.

Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk has approved the recommendation of the Alberta Historic Resources Foundation, officially naming the 250-acre lake in honour of local pioneers David and Julia Adams. The recommendation was made after a review of a submission to Alberta Culture’s Geographical Names Program

by Innisfail-area resident, Robert Nanninga.

The Adams family homesteaded on land along the eastern shore of the lake, 2 km south of the community of Raven and 35 km west of Innisfail, in 1913. The lake was transformed into a skating rink each winter and became a popular gathering place for local children, becoming known as Adams Lake.

David served with the 187th (Central Alberta) Regiment during World War I and returned to resume farming. After their children went on to establish their own farms and businesses in neighbouring communities, David and Julia chose to relocate to Calgary where David passed away in 1942. Julia Adams passed away in 1966.

“Alberta’s Geographical Names Program is a wonderful opportunity for Albertans to commemorate the people and events who have played a significant role in the development of our communities and our province,” said Klimchuk.

“Through the naming of Alberta’s geographic features, Albertans are helping to share the stories of the special people and milestone events in our province’s history.”

Nanninga added he

thinks it’s important that the pioneers of the community should be honoured for the contributions that they’ve made.

“This is a piece of our history and the naming of the lake is a nice way to document it so that it isn’t lost.”

Ken Adams, grandson of David and Julia said his family is pleased to have the lake named after his family. Ken still lives in the area and notes the significance of the naming to his aunt, Edith Hudson.

“My aunt is the only one left of the family that homesteaded on that land and she just turned 102, so it means a lot to the family.”

Albertans can propose names for a specific geographic resource by submitting an application to the Historic Resources Management Branch.

Sylvan Star Cheese lands industry honours

Fath explained that Sylvan Star Cheese basically produces three categories of cheese, and then different flavours, ages and spices within each of those categories to create the diversity of cheese which is seen from the company.

The categories which Sylvan Star Cheese is nominated in are flavoured cheese with added particulate solids and flavourings, Gouda, farmhouse cheese, flavoured cheese with added solids and flavourings and flavoured cheese with added non-particulate flavourings.

Fath said the cheese which continues to be entered into the Grand Prix is what he calls their signature cheese.

“Old Grizzly is our threeyear-old aged Gouda and it really highlights the capabilities of our expert cheese makers.”

is in the finals stage right now after judges tasted all 225 cheeses and named three finalists in each category. There are 20 categories in which cheeses can be eligible.

The winners will be announced April 18 in Montreal.

“For us the big thing [about being a finalist] is to get the recognition. We really focus on quality so to get seen for that is big.”

Fath said one the frustrations with big box stores and companies that produce generic cheeses is surrounding the Gouda category.

“There are certain size and shape specifications that we want to see appreciated so that a traditional cheese is just that. It’s nice that there were enough producers this year to get the category added. It’s kind of like competing in our own category,” said Fath.

He said the fact that the Gouda category had to be added this year speaks to the health of the specialty cheese industry which

seems to be growing in Canada.

“This is just a great outlet for us cheese makers to compare ourselves and learn about new trends in cheese and see how we stand against other cheese makers.”

Being local is an added bonus and Fath said it’s a great addition to the community to have such a successful agriculture-based business doing so well.

“It’s great to see a family farm successful in this day and age as they become less and less.”

Fath said he grew up in a farm atmosphere and loves that he was able to find a job in agriculture that allows him to make a living and not just scrape by on a daily basis.

“It’s really important that we work to keep that rural culture alive.”

Sylvan Star Cheese has been winning awards in the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix since 2006 and Fath said he hopes to see this year as another success.

History exhibition at Museum to be unveiled this month Grand opening celebration of the permanent gallery is slated for April 14th

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Officials at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery are busy doing the last of the work for the new permanent history exhibition, which is set to be unveiled later this month.

‘Remarkable Red Deer: Stories from the Heart of the Parkland’ will open March 25th, in time to celebrate the City of Red Deer’s Centennial. The grand opening celebration will take place on April 14th.

“It’s very exciting for all of us. Our goal was to be a hub for the history of the City and we’re hoping that people will enjoy it,” said Lorna Johnson, executive director of the MAG. “We designed it to be quite interactive so that people of different ages can engage and talk to each other. We’ve designed lots of things for kids in hopes of getting them excited about history as well.

And it will offer huge public programming opportunities.”

More than 50% of the 8,000 sq. ft. of available gallery space has been a construction zone for the past number of months in preparation of the opening of the new exhibition. Artifacts and photos have been selected and staff have assembled the mounts and are dressing the mannequins.

In the exhibition, several of the City’s landmarks and iconic buildings, including the train station on Ross. St., the Club Café, complete with the original jukebox from the restaurant that will play tunes from the last 100 years, and the Michener Centre, among others, will guide visitors through Red Deer’s first century.

“One of the things we are hoping by using the buildings (in the exhibition) it will encourage people to go out and to walk in the community and actually see them still standing, which most of them still are. It gives a stronger sense of the City when you know some of the stories behind things.”

The other gallery spaces will become staging areas. About 1,000 items from the MAG and the Red Deer & District Archives will be on display throughout the new exhibit. This will include 450 photos from the Archives and 300 artifacts from the Museum’s collection.

“We spoke to 45 people who have come to Red Deer in the last 50 years. They have shared their stories with us. The neat thing is that they have come from 30 different countries and have all stayed in Red Deer,” said Johnson.

sights into places as well,” said Johnson.

As part of the grand opening in April, there will be a number of performances and artists on hand to help celebrate.

Spandy Andy is creating a video to get the grand opening warmed up, Frank Pavlick, a sports poet, will be on hand as well as singer/songwriter Donna Durand. The Aboriginal Dance Troupe will also perform at the grand opening event.

There will also be arts and crafts for the kids and cake for attendants to enjoy at the celebration as well.

Latest CAT play a belly full of laughs

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The latest production by Central Alberta Theatre is a light-hearted comedy that will ensure lots of laughs.

Bloom, penned by Saskatchewan playwright Leeann Minogue and directed by Deb O’Brien, is being showcased in the Nickle Theatre March 7-9. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.

Alice Ridgeway, played by Debby Allan, and Olive Richards, played by Erna Soderberg, have been friends for more than 30 years. They have spent their lives in Stony Valley, a farming community. Alice has been recently widowed, and takes up

walking to assuage her grief.

On one of her walks she is shocked to discover a marijuana grow-op in an old barn on her late husband’s farmland. She shares her discovery with her friend Olive. The plot thickens as they attempt to nurture the plants and keep their activities hidden while also preparing the town for the Communities in Bloom contest.

The pace of the first half of the play was a little slow, but it really picked up during the second half, especially when Soderberg began to become more comfortable with her character. She offered plenty of one-liners and lots of laughs.

Allan and Soderberg together are the perfect pair for this play. They have great

chemistry on stage and you really believe that they are the best of friends. Both of these seasoned actresses hit their marks and were enjoyable to watch.

Before Bloom, a short play was also shown entitled Prelude to Thirty five, by Seth Kramer and directed by Nicole Leal.

Rae, played by Tara Rorke, would rather endure nine hours at a train station in a snowstorm with no coat than spend one more minute at Jay’s parents’ house. Jay,

We all know the story, but until special effects advances made it possible, it was hard to tell the Jack and the Beanstalk tale in any way on screen except in animation. Many of us remember the 1947 Disney version, featuring Mickey Mouse and Goofy, fondly.

But now comes Jack the Giant Slayer with live actors and some terrific spe-

cial effects.

The story is embelished and enlarged in the film.

Nicholas Hoult (Marcus in About a Boy) plays Jack.

He goes to town to sell a horse (and also meeat the princess played by Eleanor Tomlinson) and comes home with some special beans. Up grows the beanstock and Jack climbs it with soldiers to rescue the princess, who is looking for an adventure. There they find the land of not one, but a whole tribe of fearsome giants and barely escape with their lives before becoming involved in a fantastic war with the behemoths.

Ewan McGregor plays the faithful knight and Stanley Tucci is hissable as the mugging villain.

Bill Nighy has fun voicing the grotesque two-headed

leader of the giants: they are really nasty and crude.

Director Bryan Singer (XMen) and a group of writers including Christopher McQuarrie have nicely refurbished the old fairy tale, with surprising plot twists.

Perhaps it goes on too long but it is mostly a fun and rousing adventure and solid family film, although probably too scary for young children.

Rating: four deer out of five

LIFESTYLE Sleep – the secret to fitness success If you’ve made the commitment to start putting effort into achieving optimal health and are going to the gym regularly while watching your diet, you might think that you’re doing everything that you can to see the results you’re after.

But are you really?

One factor that far too many women overlook in their quest to success is sleep. Sadly though, in this day and age where your to-do list is as long as a five-year-old’s list to Santa Claus, chances are you’re struggling to get enough shut eye in.

To help you see just why sleep is important for success, let’s go over some of the reasons how it factors into the fat loss equation.

The first area where sleep will influence the amount of fat loss you see is with regards to your metabolic rate. If you aren’t sleeping enough at night, you are going to see your metabolism decrease, which means you won’t burn up as many calories minute per minute over the course of the day.

This in return means a slower rate of fat loss results and once you do lose the weight you need to, a harder time maintaining your body weight as well.

When you’re fully rested, your metabolic engine will be better equipped to burn fat all day long.

The next thing that you need to be taking into account is sleep and your workout performance. If you aren’t sleeping enough, your workout performance

WHEELER is going to decline, which means you won’t see as great of muscle building results, and chances are you won’t burn as many calories as you should during your workouts either.

If you’re giving half effort, you aren’t going to see the same success as if you gave 110% to each and every class you did. Sleep is vital to giving the most while you’re in the gym.

The next area where sleep will have an influence over your fat loss results is with regards to hunger. If you aren’t sleeping enough, you’re going to notice that you’re hungrier throughout the course of the day, which may make maintaining that reduced calorie diet feel next to impossible.

If you’ve ever woken up after a night of not much sleep to find that you can hardly stay away from the pantry or the vending machine, this is this principle at work.

You aren’t hungry because you’ve been more active that day or because your metabolism is through the roof. You’re hungrier because you haven’t had enough sleep. And, if you eat more because of it, you may gain weight, rather than lose it.

It’s been demonstrated

time and time again that those who don’t get enough sleep at night maintain higher body weights than those who do. The next element that factors into the equation with regards to sleep and fat loss is the fact that the amount of sleep you get will also influence your blood sugar control.

When you’re low on sleep, your insulin sensitivity will not be as good, meaning that if you do eat carbohydrate rich foods, you’ll see your blood sugar spike, followed by a crash, which can leave you running for more carbs.

This is a cycle that you don’t want to get yourself in because it’s going to mean that you’re rapidly consuming simple carbohydrates that are clearly not a wise move as far as fat loss is concerned.

Finally, the last area where sleep will influence the results you see is with regards to your motivation.

When you’ve woken up from a night of not much sleep, chances are the only thing on your mind is going home to bed – not hitting your workout sessions.

You’ll be tired, cranky, and just want to lay on the couch and relax. A highenergy fitness class is just not on your mind.

So, if you skip your workouts because of this, you’ll set yourself back even further.

Health Canada – where are the dead bodies?

Do you know that every day 290 North American citizens are killed by prescription drugs? To kill the same number of people, a jumbo jet would have to crash every day. So why are natural remedies being removed from health food stores while drugs that kill remain available?

viewed several other authorities who were concerned that other natural remedies are no longer available. I also discovered a most disturbing fact. In Germany, a doctor’s prescription is now required to obtain Vitamin C! A red light flashed as I’ve recently reported that Medi-C Plus, a powder that contains a high concentration of Vitamin C and lysine, can prevent and reverse coronary heart disease.

Germans now pay $45 for 90 tablets of 500mg of Vitamin C. Since I take several thousands of Medi-C Plus daily this asinine ruling would cost me $3,600 annually for C! This shows how far governments go to control natural remedies. It’s sheer, unadulterated madness since there is no known toxic amount of Vitamin C. For instance, it’s been proven safe to give intravenous injections of several hundred thousand milligrams of Vitamin C day after day intravenously to fight infection.

Today, many people are also taking Sytrinol, a natural remedy consisting of citrus and palm fruit extract which decreases total and bad cholesterol, triglycerides and increases good cholesterol. For the moment it’s still available and there’s no scientific reason it should be removed. But if it happens patients will be forced to switch to cholesterol-lowering drugs whose safety record leaves much to be desired.

Alan Cassels, a drug policy researcher at the University of Victoria, says that, “Cholesterol-lowering drugs are not worth the risk and history will regard CLDs as an unmitigated scandal in medicine.” Readers know I share this view. But hell will freeze over before Health Canada raises an alarm

and closes the door on these multi-billion dollar risky products.

Other North Americans are taking products such as BioSil to prevent osteoporosis (fragile bones). This natural silicon product safely deposits calcium and phosphate into bone. It’s even more effective if used along with Vitamin D3 which helps to absorb calcium from the bowel and Vitamin K2 that deposits calcium and phosphate into bone where they belong, rather than into arteries where they cause trouble.

Will these people be forced to take drugs such as Fosamax and Actonel that have been associated with unusual fractures and degeneration of the jawbone?

If government bureaucrats are honestly interested in the welfare of medical consumers, the best way for them to make an assessment is to examine records of the dead bodies. Data collected from 57 Poison Control Centers in the U.S. showed that in 2010, there were no deaths from the use of vitamin and herbal supplements. This in spite of the fact that during this year there were 60 billion doses of nutritional supplements taken.

So where will these amateur forensic bureaucrats find the dead bodies?

It doesn’t require a long tedious search.

The Journal of the American Medical Association claims that there are 60,000 deaths from drug use in the U.S and 10,000 in Canada every year. Now it’s the fourth leading cause of death after cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

The point is prescription drugs can kill, natural remedies never. It’s time that Health Canada learned this message.

Seminar on athletic performance and sleep coming up

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express We all need it. Some more than others and if you are a young athlete it may easily be a very important ingredient in your recipe for success.

“Sleep can provide some aspects of the recovery process that would be important to aspiring athletes,” said clinical research coordinator Brent Alexander who works out of the Centre for Sleep and Human Performance in Calgary.

The Alberta Sport Development Centre is bringing Alexander to Red Deer March 19th to present a seminar on the subject of sleep which may include the science of sleep, what fatigue is and why an athlete should even care about sleep and how it’s connected to an athlete’s training regimen, he said.

Alexander is also the co-author of a new psychometric sleep screening question-

naire for athletes which is still in the process of being finalized.

“Traditionally it’s been the training regime that’s been seen as the primary mode of achieving better performance but sleep provides the physical and cognitive recovery that is essential to being able to push to that next level,” said Alexander who has worked with members of the Calgary Flames and some of our Olympic athletes in the past.

He says sleep is very important for those young athletes who are in their early teens and just into their 20s because they are still developing.

One of the common experiences for this age group is the increasing amount of what he terms ‘sleep debt’ and Alexander says they work with these young adults to reduce that debt and then get them educated to have good sleep hygiene and sleep habits.

Alexander said while most of us get by on six or seven hours of sleep these

athletes could benefit greatly from eight, nine or even 10 hours of sleep due to the demands being placed on their bodies but it does vary from individual to individual.

Other factors which can contribute to the sleep debt issue are that student athletes go to class all day, then have to get to practice, do some study work and maybe even head to part-time jobs.

“That is an aspect of our society which is making things a little harder for them to get the sleep that they need and to perform as efficiently as they could,” he said.

“It’s one of those paradoxes that tend to happen.”

Alexander said the problem each athlete may be experiencing when it comes to sleep differs from person to person but one of the first steps taken is always to stress a change in behaviour to start with.

“That seems to be one of the most crucial factors to addressing sleep problems in the

athlete population which is specialized but also within the general population.”

Alexander admits he’d be fooling himself if more than half the people in attendance at his seminar buy into his message about the importance of sleep but he hopes some of it sinks in.

It is an easy thing to do, get more sleep, but it takes some character to change your patterns as you grow older so it might be easier to make a start on the changes for those who are younger, he said.

“It has been shown by doing absolutely nothing but just getting an extra hour or two of sleep you can increase performance metrics significantly.”

Prairie Fire Midgets to ‘focus on fundamentals’

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express With one season already on the books for the Prairie Fire Midget football team, a year where the team finished with a .500 record and a loss in the b-side final, the focus is on getting better for year two.

“There’s lots of room for improvement coming off a five hundred record,” said head coach Chris Hall. “Although everybody in Calgary thought we did extremely well considering that was our first year.”

Hall said the team learned where the bar is set in the tough Calgary league and if you want to be a top half team you don’t just have to be good, you have to be very good to compete.

Some key injuries on what was a very strong defense contributed in part to the even season, he added.

The decision was made to play in Calgary as opposed to the Edmonton league because the feeling was the competition was a lot stiffer down south and Hall says it was right decision in his mind.

“I think that’s where you want to be if you want your kids challenged and to be better.”

The Fire have wrapped up an evaluation camp with 48 players on the roster and another dozen players who may be some of the best Grade 9 players around but were not ready just yet for the full roster, he said.

“It’s just part of our overall commitment to help develop Central Alberta players, get more kids into the program and exposed to the level of play and the level of coaching and the level of commitment.”

Hall says the team was somewhat Grade 11 heavy in its first year but that was sort of the way the talent pool fell, he said.

“So we only have 15 kids on the team who were with us last year so it’s overall a younger team,” he said. “We’ve got more Grade nines, more Grade tens and fewer Grade elevens than we had last year.”

Hall expects the offensive line to be a strong aspect of the team this season with the running backs a close second and the receivers right there as well.

“We’re installing a completely new offense so I think it’s going to be a different look,” said Hall. “I think defensively we are going to be young so we’re going to have to focus on the fundamentals.”

An exhibition game in Lacombe in late March will kick off the season which begins for real in early April.

In this case, the old belly putter rule is on its death bed while a new rule is cooking in the ovens of the Royal & Ancient and the USGA. But wait, the plot thickens as the PGA had decided to take a clear as mud stance about the rule banning anchoring a long putter.

Essentially what came out of the mouth of PGA commish Tim Finchem was they don’t agree with what the governing bodies are pitching but didn’t exactly say what their plan for tour members was going to be.

The main point Finchem made in front of many viewers of the Accenture Match Play was there is no empirical evidence the use of a long putter anchored somewhere on your body allowed for an advantage over other golfers.

He added the ban would slow down growth of the game on the amateur level.

The USGA and the R&A counter with the integrity of the game being compromised by a player not executing a swing with the long putter. So off with its head!

Well a quick look back shows this putter has been around for decades but only since Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Ernie Els won on tour with the broom handle has the debate about its use heated up.

The governing bodies clear their collective throats, look annoyed and state those wins have nothing to do with what they are contemplating.

But if the integrity is at the centre, why wait so long to make a move on changing the rule? As for the perceived advantage, the PGA stats show no such thing.

In 2012, the strokes gained category, a main measuring stick for putting, showed no belly putters in the top 12 players.

In the average putts per round category, once again no belly putter players in the top 12.

If the ruling bodies stick to their guns then it will be interesting to see what the PGA Tour does in response and that is a whole other mess.

The saga will continue for a little while longer with a decision to be made in late spring but a showdown is looming as one side or the other has to blink.

Finding that favourite place in your home This morning I was sitting in my favourite place – my bathtub, reading about creating sacred spaces in our homes. While not every home has space for an ‘alter’ or meditative activities, I believe that every home can have a favourite place. A place for retreat or relaxation is necessary in every home as we retreat from our hectic pace.

Recently I embarked on a design project (of sorts) in the re-organizing and de-cluttering of our garage. Since moving to our new home in August our garage has become a dumping ground for all the extra bits of things we didn’t know what to do with. Being in a townhouse where the lawn is

LEWIS mowed and the sidewalks are shoveled, our lawn tools are just taking up space never to be used again. I was working on a Valentines gift for my sweetie when the garage idea came to mind - how nice for him to come home for his days off and not have to clean the garage.

So I set out working on his dream space, a guy’s retreat with organization, new shelves and a place for absolutely every tool and

unused lawnmower. I installed a dartboard for some recreation and a shiny red radio tuned to his favourite station. A comfy bench – a place to enjoy a cigar with buddies is made more relaxing with red cushions attached to the wall.

I had some extra patio furniture cushions (red, of course) that didn’t fit on any of my outdoor chairs so I decided to use them as backrests, they are so cute!

My fiancé came home and his eyes absolutely lit up when he saw the garage. The bar fridge was full of chilly beverages and he could not stop smiling as he sat on his bench with his back nestled against the bright red cushions. He grinned and

grinned and said it was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for him. It may not have been the design to win awards but it made the space completely useable and personable to him and isn’t that what good design is all about?

Every home deserves a dream space, or a space to dream. Even adding a small side table to your favourite chair so you have someplace to put your tea can make a delightful difference in your down time. A comfortable place to journal with a great book and a pen that writes with ease will make the experience of journaling that much more fulfilling.

Bright red cushions bolted to the wall as cute backrests are far bet-

ter than just leaning against plain old drywall (just ask my fiancé).

You can use the same technique with fabulous toss cushions used as a headboard and I think you sleep way better in a bed with a headboard.

Find that unused corner or a space that could use revamping and create a place of retreat in your home. You will be amazed at the amount of use a revitalized place will get and how refreshing that new space will be. I find myself going into the garage more often now and every time I turn on the light, I smile and throw a few darts at the board just for fun.

Home Show runs this weekend at Westerner Park Those looking to bring a fresh change to their homes this year will want to check out the Red Deer Home Show, set for this weekend at Westerner Park.

Organizers say there are plenty of ideas for upgrading or renovating a home – inside and out, including tips on construction, products, décor, landscaping, gardening and more.

The Home Show is hosted and managed by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Central Alberta, and has been since 1979.

Back by popular demand, organizers are hosting Carson Arthur, who started his television career as a behind-the-scenes prop coordinator for a national garden call-in show.

With his first series, Room To Grow (GlobalTV), he has created inspired outdoor spaces for homeowners and taught a generation of viewers how to increase their own living spaces by expanding outside.

Following on the heels of his first success, Green Force (HGTV) provided Arthur with the opportunity to take on some of the larg-

est challenges associated with urban living.

Folks can check out Arthur’s presentation ‘Show Me The Money’ on March 9 at 11 a.m. The talk will focus on environmental changes people can make to their outdoor spaces which will improve home value.

At 2 p.m. he will address landscape design in a talk entitled ‘The New LowMaintenance’.

On March 10 at 1 p.m., local expert Vicki Skinner (Canadian Closet) will talk about de-cluttering the home along with storage and organization tips and tricks to make things run more efficiently in homes and offices.

Also on March 10 at 2 p.m., Ellen Walker of Ellen Walker Design Solutions will present ‘Spiff Up Your Space! Update Your Home and Give New Life to Your Lifestyle.’

There will also be a chance to meet more local experts on March 9 at 12:30 p.m.

and Lorne Erickson, Landmark Group of Builders will talk about ‘Energy Efficiency 101 – Making the Smart Building Choices’.

To increase learning experiences for students, Red Deer College, Avalon Central Alberta and Landmark Group of Builders, in partnership with members of the Canadian Home Builders Association -

Central Alberta and the Red Deer Construction Association will begin construction of a home on campus that demonstrates building technologies that contribute to a small carbon footprint.

The project will provide a unique learning opportunity for industry to collaborate with trades and technology, science, business as

well as students from high schools and other post-secondary institutes.

The session will provide a brief overview of the project, describe some of the technologies they will be using and discuss the importance of community building.

The Red Deer Home Show runs March 8 from noon to 8 p.m.; March 9

from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and March 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors and there is no charge for those under 12 (with an adult).
