or the last decade, the Peninsula News Review has presented some of the people — the women —behind some the Peninsula’s best-known businesses, as well as local personalities and movers and shakers. Most of all, these women have been leaders in the community, helping to shape the places we call home and create a place in which we all want to live, work and play. This year’s special supplement to the News Review focuses on local women and their role as leaders in the community —what they think women can contribute as leaders and advice they can offer to others wanting to be involved in their community — in business and in their volunteer time. Women play an important role in the Peninsula’s business community, in ownership, operation and development of local enterprise. Their hard work in their own fields and alongside others in the communities they serve, contributes to the overall well-being of the Peninsula.

Working Together: Engaging Men to End Violence against Women This year’s theme for International Women’s Day 2013, is Working Together: Engaging Men to End Violence against Women. Canadians participate in a worldwide celebration of women, peace and human rights. Canadians are called on to work together to end violence against women. The idea for an International Women’s Day arose around the turn of the 20th century out of a long-standing movement for women to participate equally in society. The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. That day, more than one million women and men showed their support by participating in public events. Over time, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration. Each year, March 8 and the week of March 8 provide an opportunity to take stock of our progress towards gender equality and to honour the contributions women have made and are making — both in Canada and around the world. —Source: Status of Women Canada

Lynne Parker With a photography background and an eye for detail, Lynne Parker found herself in a growing business, placing online ads for clients. Just over two year ago that business took an exciting turn and Lynne, along with her partner Vic Clive, opened The Old Attic, carrying a selection of unique quality items from past to present. Lynne grew up in Central Saanich and brings her extensive background in retail buying and merchandising back to the Peninsula at The Old Attic. Expanding after just a few months in business, the shop has quickly become known as a weekend destination on the Saanich Peninsula for folks on the hunt for interesting collectible pieces: everything from vintage, modern and retro to antiques. The Old Attic became so well known that Lynne and Vic found a new location for their growing business. “The Old Moose Hall” on East Saanich Road is now being converted it into the new location for “The Old Attic”. Q &A What business do you own/are involved with? For how long? I have been one of the owners of d.g.bremner & company menswear since 2003 and Bubba Loo Children’s Wear since October 2011.

What role do you and this business have in shaping your community? Ours is a family business and like many of us in our retail community, I wear many hats. Buyer, banker, book keeper, tailor, display, maintenance person and of course sales! If it happens in the stores, I have to know how to do it and in the 10 years I have been in Sidney I’ve seen the community, and the demands of the community change. Our business is more than ever a service business as much as it is a retail enterprise. Every day we face competition from an increasing number of sources and the only way we can effectively compete is by offering a friendly and intimate level of customer service that our larger competitors are unable to compete with. As a retail community, collectively we need to understand that we are all in constant competition for our customer’s disposable income, both in and outside our region.

Page 9

Kim Bremner

We need to match our competition in promoting and delivering the benefits of shopping in Sidney. What role do women have in making this a better place to live, work and play? I think this question might be 20 or 30 years out of date. Women have been equal partners involved at all levels in making Sidney, North Saanich and the Peninsula as a whole a better place for many, many years. In what way can women be leaders in their community? When I walk down Beacon Avenue, I see many women leading our retail community. These women risk a great deal, are some of the best employers on the Saanich Peninsula and work hard every day to make Sidney and the surrounding areas a great place. I believe women are already active leaders in our community and there is very little gender bias in leadership at any level in our community. What do you enjoy the most about your community? Without a doubt, the diversity. The diversity of people, age, opinions, landscape and most of all activity.

In your view, what does this area need the most? I really feel we need a business improvement association or something very much like it. As I’ve said, we are in a very competitive situation and we need only look to the recent success of the Merchant’s Co-op Family Day and Lego event to see what a focused effort can achieve. Imagine over time, the events that could take place if we had a well funded, full time, well co-ordinated effort. We would keep people and dollars from our region in our region as well as be able to bring people from the prairies and the U.S. to Sidney. What is the next project, initiative or challenge you would like to tackle? It’s a personal project, but one I’m so looking forward to — learning to be a fabulous grandparent to my step-daughter’s little girl. What advice can you offer women who are looking to become involved in their community? Be innovative and passionate, embrace change and most importantly, be inclusive! There are many voices in this community and every one has a right to be heard and understood.

Meet Robyn. Robyn Dosouto, Store Manager Some people take years to discover their career path and passion; for others, it arrives bright and early. So it was for Robyn Dosouto, manager of Thrifty Foods in Sidney. Robyn initially came to Thrifty Foods’ Saanich Centre location for her Grade 9 work experience. Once there, she loved it so much, she never left! Appreciating the friendly, family atmosphere at Thrifty Foods, Robyn was hired as a cashier, where she enjoyed the camaraderie of her fellow employees, and the friendly familiarity with customers. “It’s was a lot of fun and I was attracted by everything Thrifty Foods stood for. I never expected to stay; they just made it too hard to leave!” Over the coming years, Robyn would work her way up to front end manager, then an assistant store manager, then a Retail Operations Assistant, liaising between five locations and the vice-president of Thrifty Foods. Most recently, though, she has been a store manager, becoming the company’s second woman to head a Thrifty Foods store, following colleague Lisa Trotter as Thrifty’s first female store manager at Admirals Walk. “There are more and more opportunities for women every year,” she notes. Robyn thrives on the responsibilities of running a store, enhancing the shopping experience, supporting the community and helping Thrifty Foods stay fresh and modern for its customers. “It’s so challenging – I love that part of it; I love starting something, seeing it through and seeing the results of it.” The family atmosphere at Thrifty Foods is one of the reasons so many staff members stay with the company for their careers. For Robyn, recently returned from maternity leave after welcoming her second child, “Thrifty Foods is all about families and so am I, and being a Thrifty Foods employee allows me to be a great mom and a career woman.” Starting out, “I liked how they balanced students’ school schedules, then later in life, when I had my children, they made it so easy to have that work-life balance,” says the mom to two busy boys, age five and two years. When she’s not in the store, family keeps Robyn and her husband busy at home and in the community as their active boys take after their mom in their love for new challenges. “Sunday is family day, so we all spend the day together and usually end with a movie. It’s all about family.” Thrilled to be back at the helm of the Sidney store, with its incredible staff and loyal customers, “I feel spoiled,” Robyn says. “It’s something that’s very, very special and they make it so easy to come to work every day!”

Q &A What business do you own/are involved with? For how long? We’ve been building Melinda’s Biscotti as a business for the last eight years.

What role do you and this business have in shaping your community? I’d like to think my cafe serves as a place where people can come meet, where they feel warm and welcomed and where they can have great food. We are a meeting place and a place where people can come together and relax and be together. What role do women have in making this a better place to live, work and play? I think women are generally very caring and empathetic and those are two very important roles in a community like the Saanich Peninsula. In what way can women be leaders in their community? I think that each individual has their own strengths, so the best way for women to be leaders in their community is to come together and work towards a common goal. One of the biggest ways I feel I contribute as a leader is by giving back to

Page 13

Melinda Cownden

other people who are just starting out in business. I had no idea what I was doing when I started out with my business, so if I can help even one small business that is starting out by giving them advice and assistance where they need it, that’s leadership to me. All of the mistakes I made can be used as a tool to help others, so why not? What do you enjoy the most about your community? The support! We have so many regulars and so many fantastic people who support us and promote us. I also love meeting people from the seniors community here on the Peninsula. They have so many stories to share and so much wisdom. I love meeting them. In your view, what does this area need the most? Hands down, I would say affordable housing. As someone who’s lived on the Peninsula for a long time, I know I was lucky to get into the housing market in Sidney when I did. But I can’t see how anyone who works out here and doesn’t live out here could ever afford to bring the two together, it’s just so expensive.

It would be nice to have a greater crosssection of people in the community but younger people just can’t afford to live here. What is the next project, initiative or challenge you would like to tackle? My business partner and I are working really hard on growing Melinda’s Biscotti and Melinda’s Meringues. We have the interest in our product — we just got into Federated Co-op in Alberta and Saskatchewan but we don’t have the production level we currently need. So that’s our next challenge — getting our machinery and staff levels up to compete with the amount of production we would like to achieve. What advice can you offer women who are looking to become involved in their community? I think one of the most important things is to stay open minded. There’s lots of ways to get involved in the Saanich Peninsula community, but you have to stay open minded to be able to communicate with people. And listening is important too. Take the time to listen rather than talk, a lot of times you’ll hear something you might not have otherwise heard.

Q &A What business do you own/are involved with? For how long? I have been the office manager and in charge of rentals and event organization for the Saanich Fair for 17 years. What role do you and this business have in shaping your community? Our mandate is to propagate agriculture and we do that by way of the three-day fair and all it entails. Some people have never seen a cow or know where their milk comes from. The fair has been around for 146 years in the community and it’s a good community service, from hosting events and meetings to dog shows and weddings. What role do women have in making this a better place to live, work and play? Women are always out there volunteering, at thrift shops and at parent advisory councils. We are organizers and can multi-task. Even when women have kids, they stay involved in their community, they talk, they

Page 17

Gloria Dol

join groups and network. In what way can women be leaders in their community? A lot of us have the ability to be leaders in whatever we do. We can take over a project, run with it, and make it better. Being leaders involves a combination of skills and the ability to run with our ideas. The women I work with in the community are amazing and there always seems to be more women taking the lead. What do you enjoy the most about your community? The people. All of them — in local clubs and organizations and volunteer groups — they are always helpful. Local organizations have hard-working people who are leaders in the community. In your view, what does this area need the most? There needs to be more activities for children and teens.

What is the next project, initiative or challenge you would like to tackle? I’ve taken on a new manager here at the Fairgrounds and we will be getting a new assistant as well. The challenge will be to delegate responsibilities and to train them to be able to do the job well. I need to be able to share my experience in this job — there is a book on what to do, but it’s not all you need to know. What advice can you offer women who are looking to become involved in their community? Don’t limit yourself, even as you get older. You are never too old to do something. Once the kids are gone, you can start exploring new areas, find yourself, take the opportunity to try something new. You never know what opportunities you might fall into. Even stay-at-home moms have something to offer and no one is stuck in just one place — if they are willing to be open to new ideas.

Women In Business

Q &A What business do you own/are involved with? For how long? I am the General Manager of the Sidney Pier Hotel and have been for the last five years.

What role do you and this business have in shaping your community? I’d like to think we serve as a place that binds the community together. We like to be thought of as one of the hubs of Sidney, a place where community members can come together and meet, work and play all in the same place. What role do women have in making this a better place to live, work and play? The Peninsula is an amazing place and it is driven by a formidable group of businesspeople, including a lot of women. Some of the smartest and most driven women I’ve ever met are from right here and that can be seen in initiatives like the Merchant’s Coop which was driven by a dynamic group of women creating the Sidney experience. In what way can women be leaders in their community? It’s less about being an individual leader and more about what each individual can

give to a combined effort. Leadership takes many different forms and especially in our business community here, we all fill different leadership roles. We work together to achieve things rather than working as individuals. What do you enjoy the most about your community? As someone who oversees a business in the community, I love that when we put something out there, the community embraces it. I also love the fact that when you walk down the street, everyone addresses everyone with a nod, a smile or a greeting. That’s special and it’s so Sidney. In your view, what does this area need the most? I think we are already poised on the brink of something special. In my tenure here, the sense of collaboration between businesses and business people and the community has increased ten-fold and we are still working toward making this spot more special and unique than it already is. We’ve got this amazing place to work and play and by coming together as one force on an even bigger scale, I don’t think we can go anywhere but up.

What is the next project, initiative or challenge you would like to tackle? Part of my role is to look at ways we can engage the community and support our local not-for-profits. So, one thing I will be tackling this year is looking at new ways to do those things. We are also in the midst of some changes at the hotel, including some renovations at Haro’s which will be unveiled mid-March and some exciting changes coming to Georgia Cafe as well. I’m very excited for both. What advice can you offer women who are looking to become involved in their community? I would encourage them to get involved in one of the many great groups we have here on the Peninsula. There are so many great ways to meet people and connect like the Newcomers Club which meets here at the Pier Hotel, or all the fantastic programming through Panorama Recreation Centre and all the great volunteering opportunities like the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, the Sidney Lions Food Bank and Beacon Community Services. Just by getting involved in those simple ways, people can really become a catalyst in the community.

Congratulations, Karen! Our Foundation Executive Director is the proud recipient of a Diamond Jubilee Medal. To honour the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, medals were being awarded to individuals who have enriched the life of their community. Karen Morgan, Executive Director of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, was one of those chosen for this award. Karen has served as President of the Sidney-by-the-Sea Rotary Club, Chair of the Memorial Park Society (which administers the Mary Winspear Centre), and is a current director of the Norgaard Foundation. In the 1990’s, as

an appointee to the National Round Table on Environment and Economy, she convinced the then-Finance Minister to implement a tax initiative to improve the tax treatment of donations of environmentally sensitive land. During Karen’s thirteen years with the Foundation, more than $23 million has been raised. Karen enjoys every minute of her work, which she calls “…the most fun you can have and still get paid!” Photo by Sandy McElroy
