Good things come in small packages

There is always something growing at the Top Crop garden centre. Even in the middle of winter there are houseplants and also small containers of cat grass or wheatgrass tucked away under grow lights on the shelves. But it is always a special moment when the planting table is set up, grow lights are attached and the first seeds are sown. This year, it was the arugula seedlings signalling the start of a new growing season.

There are some plants that can be grown in your home pretty much year-round, either under a grow light or on a very sunny window sill. They include herbs, sprouts and any leafy greens, such as lettuce or spinach. You can start herbs and greens from seed, and it is best to use a high-quality, soil-less mix. You have to make sure the plants are kept in a warm and bright location. A sunny, south-facing window is perfect as long as there are no drafts. You might still have to supplement with a fluorescent light, however.

Now is also the time you can finally start some of your other seeds, bulbs and cuttings indoors to transplant into your outdoor garden later. To figure out which plants you should start now and which ones still have to wait a little bit longer, read your seed packets. They have all the information you need on them to get growing. It will tell you how long before the last frost you should sow seeds indoors usually anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks. While the last frost can never be exactly predicted, it is helpful to consider it around the fourth weekend in May. The seed pack also contains all other information you will need to grow that particular plant, from seed depth, spacing and days to sprout. Make sure to keep the packet after your seeding is done, it also contains information that will be useful throughout the growing season.

Recycling is a good thing, but when it comes to starting seeds, it is best to use new seed trays and clean containers each season. Old, unclean pots and inserts can carry pests, disease and residual fertilizers which can greatly affect the success of your seeds. A common problem called ‘damping off’, is a fungal infection that attacks the seedlings. Just as they begin to grow and look like something, they suddenly wilt and rot off at the soil level. Using new or thoroughly sterilized pots and trays can decrease the risk.

The other key ingredient to successfully starting seeds is the growing media. Best to use are soil-less mixes that contain peat, vermiculite, perlite and some even have nutrients. We start all of our plants in our greenhouses in a BX blend. We carry BX in many varieties as well as different Sunshine mixes. Jiffy plantable growing pellets and pots are another option.

When planting seeds in trays, ensure the growing media is damp. Plant the seed according to the directions given. It helps to have bottom heat - you can place the seeds on the top of a fridge or use a germination heat mat. Covering the trays with domes or glass can help to keep in humidity which in turn helps germination.

Once seeds have sprouted, you need to provide them with proper light. Not enough light can lead to spindly seedlings that stretch. If you don't have an adequate spot with sufficient light, consider buying a fluorescent or high intensity plant light. They are very reasonably priced and last a long time.

A seed comes with all its food that it needs to germinate. Once it is growing, however, it needs fertilizer in order to keep growing properly. This is especially important if you are growing in very small containers as they will utilize the nutrients in that space very quickly. How much food you should use can vary, depending on what you are growing and how long you will have it inside.

There are many products out there that can help you successfully start plants from seeds, and every year, seed companies are coming out with new, exciting varieties. Attempted murder charges laid in shooting Submitted

“Quick response by police and specifically Police Dog Services led to the successful apprehension of the suspect within a very short time,” said Cpl. Chris Newel, Kimberley/ Cranbrook RCMP. Through investigation police have determined that the suspect and a person in the apartment knew each other. This is not believed to be a random act.

Witnesses were interviewed and a search warrant has been executed on the suspect’s residence where further evidence was obtained.

The subject went before a Judicial Justice of the Peace the day of his arrest and is being held for his next court appearance, February 27.

A charge of Careless Use of a Firearm has also been laid.

2013 Wood Stove Exchange Program Begins March 1

The Ministry of Environment and Wildsight, with the goal of air quality improvement, will be offering a Wood Stove Exchange program to residents of the City of Cranbrook, City of Kimberley, and RDEK Areas A and E starting on March 1st, 2013.

Rebates of $250 will be offered to qualifying purchasers of new, EPA certified wood, pellet or gas stoves when replacing old, uncertified models. There are 45 rebates available on a first come, first served basis. During March and April 2013, participants will benefit from an additional consumer discount of $150 off the supplier’s suggested retail price (MSRP).

William Ewart Graham "Bill" 1925 - 2013 Bill Graham of Cranbrook, BC passed away peacefully on Monday, February 25, 2013.

Bill was born on the family farm near Bateman, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1925. He was an avid card player to the end, winning 2 hands of crib shortly before peacefully passing away.

Bill retired as an Engineer from the CPR in 1985 and has since enjoyed 28 years of travelling, golfing, curling, and spending time with family and friends.

Bill was predeceased by his loving wife Alice, in 1997 and his daughter Alice, in 1953. He is survived by his children Helen (Dave), Marguerite (James), Bill (Melanie), Jim (Lori), Bernice (Dale) and Betts (Brad); his grandchildren Ken, Karen, Kathleen, Eric, Kim, Mike, Alissa, Tyler, James, Brad, Audrey, Justin, Jeff, Meghan, Scott, Deanna, Amy, Kevin, Jake, CJ, Noah, Andrea, Levi, Cory and Justin; his great grandchildren James, Wade, Hugh, Charlotte, Will, Emma, Samantha, Lane, Owen, Isaac, Kelty, Roslyn, Brady & Lochlan; his sister Myrtle (Johnny), in-laws Joan Graham and Ernie Hubbard and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the 9th Street neighbourhood.

The winners will be announced at an awards banquet at Nelson’s Spiritbar on May 10.

Hansen said the contest provides incredible exposure for the shortlisted artists.

“Last year, artists were getting 2,000 unique listens on the tracks up for awards,” he said. “It’s a really great opportunity for an up-and-comer or established artists alike to get exposed to new audiences in all of the communities in the

Kootenays.”

Last year it was Fernie’s Shred Kelly that went away with coveted title of Artist of the Year, while Nelson’s The Automation was named best new band.

Hansen can’t wait to see who will enter the competition this year.

“There’s so much musical talent in the Kootenays,” he said. “There’s great bands just jamming in their basements or playing for the dinner crowd at local restaurants — we want to dig out those hidden gems.”

With the help of Black Press community papers, including the Kootenay Advertiser, all the performers in the running for an award will be in the spotlight.

“The reach of the awards has grown exponentially,” Hansen said. “We’ll be exposing people to artists from Golden to Grand Forks and all the communities in between.”

Audrey Lindstrom (Mooy) Jan. 25, 1926-Feb. 23, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Audrey announce her passing at her home on February 23, 2013.

She leaves behind sons: Wes (Bonnie), Kirk (Shirley), Gordon Mooy & Ken (Shelly) Lindstrom; daughters: Brenda, Sharon, Audrey (Larry) Mooy; stepchildren: Cliff (Margaret), Everett, Ray and Karen Lindstrom.

Audrey is survived by five generations of many grand and great grand children, nephews and nieces.

Alan Wallace Webster 1923-2013 An extraordinary human being left us in the early morning hours of February 12, 2013 to continue his journey in this universe in another dimension.

Alan was blessed in many ways. He was raised in Lillooet by beautiful for their time, very forward parents.

Alan had a very successful career as a civil engineer playing a major part on large construction sites all over North America. His work was an integral part of his life. Locally he worked on several projects, one of them the Skookumchuck pulp mill. He was there employed by H.A. Simons Engineering. He also worked as consultant for several other companies.

Alan was allowed to experience great love three times in his life. His first wife Lillian and second wife Nina, both extraordinary people he accompanied in the last minutes of their lives in this world. His last love was there when he crossed through the veil and had to say good bye to him.

Alan truly lived his life in the higher vibration of love. He quietly helped people; he was kind courteous, generous, honest, hardworking, and sincere. He understood that love is the highest vibration in the universe, and the only way to really live a successful life is to live it on a high vibrational level.

He did his part to help this world to be a better place and the best we can do to honour Alan is to practice love as a way of life, exercising courtesy, kindness, and understanding towards each other on a daily basis to help this planet in its transition into a better world, to a higher vibration.

At Alan’s request there will be no funeral service.

Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Kootenay Heritage Wildlife Trust Fund, Box 100, Kimberley, BC, V1A 5Y4, any group who is fighting the building or expansion of pipelines to the coast of BC to help preserve this beautiful coast and our pristine land, or any charity of your choice.
