Colwood complains over sewage costs World awaits Council will send letter to CRD outlining funding concerns Kyle Wells News staff

Sewage treatment costs are once again causing headaches for Colwood city councillors as they struggle to figure out how residents should have to pay for initial capital costs.

The Capital Regional District has asked Colwood for $212,000 in 2013 to cover capital costs for the project. Colwood mayor Carol Hamilton said the cost is unexpected and, in her view, excessive.

Hamilton said this could amount to a 100 per cent increase in sewage costs to current sewage users in 2013 year alone.

When spread out across all taxpayers in the municipality, this one charge alone amounts to approximately a two per cent tax increase, said Hamilton.

“That’s before I can look at fixing a pothole, that’s before I can tend to a garden. Where does it stop?”

Council is sending a letter to the CRD raising concerns over the costs for 2013 and laying out the impact on Colwood residents.

“We need to have an understanding, we need to have these folks hear, they need to see what it means for our community.”

Hamilton said she is not a sewer user and is as upset as anyone else that when all is said and done she could be paying

as much as $300 to $400 per year for the community’s sewage treatment.

She worries this will hurt real estate in the community, as the idea of paying that much into a service not being received might turn people off moving to the community.

“There is a ripple effect of extreme proportions, in my view, with this formula.”

In December council voted to have all future capacity paid for by the entire municipality as a parcel tax. An official decision on how current users will pay for treatment is not yet solidified.

William Head inmate dies Correctional Service Canada is doing a routine review of circumstances after an inmate death at William Head Institution. On Feb. 23 officers found inmate Richard Hall, 47, unresponsive and performed CPR. He was taken to Victoria General Hospital and pronounced dead, said a press release from Correctional Service Canada.

Hall was serving a life sentence for second degree murder and aggravated assault. His sentence started March 8, 1985.

Farmer files for foreclosure

He is not retiring from farming, just trying to pay the bills.

“I had to get a job to keep the farm,” Warren said. “I am still working 16-hour days on the farm too.”

Warren has farmed the Sooke Road property for several years, but this year is tough. He now sells cars to help supplement his income.

“We are in foreclosure, I need to get a mortgage,” he explained. “My credit has gone bad in my venture to produce high-quality food. It’s going to be a tough one.”

He’s turned to social media to gain exposure, offering draws for free eggs and pork. After two contests Warren’s Facebook page, Shadow Mountain Farm, received nearly 2,000 new “likes.”

He has also booked several farm tours each Sunday for children’s groups.

Unfortunately Facebook “likes” don’t pay the bills.

“I’ve made mistakes and I’ve taken this all on myself,” Warren admitted.

“I am trying to create a sustainable model by producing my own manure

and growing vegetables. I’ve invested $80,000 into this.”

He has boars, baby pigs, chicken for meat and eggs as well some turkeys.

Gearing up for summer, he has more than 100 different plants sprouting into seedlings. All of his plants comply with Metchosin’s new bylaw banning genetically modified organisms.

“This is a rugged West Coast farm, it’s what I could afford in 2006,” said the 38-year-old farmer.

He is working on building more greenhouses on the nine-acre farm so he can produce more food.

“We need to be a team to do this. We all have different positions like the bee keeper, baker, and farmers for vegetables and livestock. We need to use all these skills together,” said the farmer.

He hopes to sell some cars and use commissions to get his farm back in the black.

WestShore Chamber of Commerce CEO Dan Spinner said the chamber is currently looking into ways to support farmers in Metchosin. Agricultural amenities, such as another abattoir and a grain mill, would help, said Spinner, and there is the possibility of establishing a farmer’s co-op to support these ideas.

“There’s a certain amount of inter-

regional co-operation we want to see if we can get going,” Spinner said. “But it’s a serious issue. … We always say we want more local food, more organic food and then the farmers are disappearing while we say it.”

During the winter it can be tough for small farmers, admits Metchosin farmer Tom Henry, editor of Small Farm Canada magazine. Keeping a farm profitable through all seasons is easier with year-round livestock he points out.

At Stillmeadow Farm, Henry sells his local pork, lamb and chickens. He partners with another farmer on the products. He also grows parsnips, leeks and beets in the winter.

“It really helps if your stuff is good,” said Henry who also sells a winter holly crop that his family has spent the past 50 years developing. “You also need to give your customers special perks for coming back each week.”

For vegetable farmers who don’t have livestock, Henry suggests keeping in touch with customers over the winter and sending out emails when the crops are ready to harvest.

Henry says more farmers are using social media.

Visual of Colwood ready to change The City of Colwood awarded a $64,800 contract to Victoriabased Upanup Studios to make improvements to the city’s website and visual identity, including its logo. The company was picked out of more than 60 proposals submitted.

Money had already been set aside for the work and the contract is within the budget.

Dam safety review revealing Colwood is looking at working on Lookout Brook Dam this year after a required safety review was completed in January. It proposes an instrumentation survey costing $12,000, to be funded by core dam maintenance budget. Also proposed are various studies in 2014 estimated at $30,000 and one in 2015 estimated at $8,000. They will be considered during budget discussions this spring.

as Chinese Canadians and the felicities – the joyful celebrations of traditional Chinese holidays – that united and strengthened them since their first arrivals in the mid-1800s.

The centrepiece is the oldest-known Chinese Freemason’s lantern from Victoria’s Chinatown. Hand-made with paper over a bamboo frame, heat from lights or candles powered an intricate system of wheels and long black hairs to move parts of the lantern, animating nature scenes set among other decoration.

Enjoy a rare opportunity to see the museum’s object conservator using science-based treatments to preserve the lantern, Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Sept. 29.

The stand-out exhibition of the 2013 season will be Race to the End of the Earth, May 17 to Oct. 14, and its accompanying lecture series.

Recounting one of the most stirring tales of Antarctic exploration – the quest to be the first to reach the South Pole in 1911 and 1912 – Race explores the epic adventures of Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Capt. Robert Falcon Scott of the British Royal Navy on their respective 3,900-km (1,800-mile) journeys from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf to the Pole and back.

Through photographs, paintings and original artifacts, Race to the End of the Earth places visitors in the midst of Antarctic exploration and research.

After choosing a character card and assuming the personality of a member of the expeditionary teams, visitors can move through the exhibition, discovering clues about their character’s experiences on the way to the South Pole.

Don’t miss the life-sized re-creations of Scott’s hut at Cape Evans, including his study and crew members’ living spaces, and Amundsen’s underground workrooms, where his crew was able to work protected from extreme wind and cold.

A stunning video projection, digital map and other interactive exhibits will reveal what scientists are learning today about Antarctica’s surprising sub-ice landscape, ocean currents and weather.

Swimming for the soul

S

licing through water with “perfect technique,� Tianni Mai Arseneault belies her past, and races into her future. The 12-year-old had a rough start early in life, but the determined and talented Langford athlete is plunging toward her goal to become an Olympic swimmer while leading her peers in the sport.

Tianni and her two younger brothers were taken from their biological parents five years ago after the children suffered malnutrition and neglect. Living in squalor the siblings’ parents rarely fed them. There had been concerns brought to the government’s attention before but a young girl who babysat blew the final whistle. One night govKyle Wells ernment workers came to the Reporting apartment and moved the children out.

Tianni was hospitalized.

Her stomach had shrunk to a size where she could no longer digest food and the eight year-old weighed 27 pounds, about half of a healthy weight. “We were dying slowly pretty much,� said Tianni. “I’ve been trying to forget all this stuff.�

Five years ago Rheal and Nikki Arseneault took Tianni and her brothers as foster children. The couple had fostered children before but with these three something clicked. “It just felt right. We fell in love with them, they fell in love with us,� Rheal said.

On July 28, 2011 the couple officially adopted the siblings.

Shortly after moving into her new home, Tianni tried swimming for the first time. She ventured into a pool, slipped on the bottom into the deep end and had to be fished out. “I almost drowned when I first got in the water,� Tianni said. “But I’ve come a long way now.�

Working her way through the swimming lesson levels, the youngster discovered a love

and talent for the sport. “The lessons part of it felt like therapy,�

Rheal said. “Once she actually started competing, that’s when I saw the most change.�

Tianni started swimming competitvely last year with the Island Swimming Association.

She finished first in her first race.

There are born swimmers and made swimmers, explained coach Alex McCoid. He said Tianni is without a doubt the former and could have a long career as a swimmer. “She was just meant to be in the water,�

McCoid said. “The precision and how she moves through the water, her technique is just unbelievable for her age. ‌ She’s going to be a golden child soon.â€?

When Tianni started at Spencer middle school last fall she was dismayed the school didn’t have a swim team. With the help of teachers along with staff at Island Swimming, Tianni started her campaign with posters and announcements.

The team has five members and competed in three swim meets so far, the latest on Feb. 24. All members of the team did well, beating their personal best times. Tianni showed exceptional talent, taking first place in her three events: 50m backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.

Tianni said her new home and sport helped her move past the hard times. “It’s helped me to become more active, it’s made me think about my health,� Tianni said. “I’ve been getting way more confident with myself and being like ‘I can do it.’�

With her life on track and a passion ignited, Tianni has her sights set on the Olympics and a career as a professional swimmer. For the time being, Tianni has two more years at Spencer and plans to help build the swim team before moving on.

Her life experiences have taught her to keep trying. “Keep going and you can always change if you have to,� Tianni said. “And there’s always a hope.� kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

Fees show short term loses, long term gains

Metchosin event set to fling into spring

West Shore Parks and Recreation will adjust its fees on April 1 to reflect the upcoming transition from HST to PST. Fees will increase two to three per cent initially but over time the change will for the most part reduce fees as they will be in affect for 18 months, thus skipping 2014’s annual fee increase.

The changes need to be ratified by each of the partner municipalities. Colwood has approved the changes.

Land settlement a solid next step Was the B.C. Liberal government’s trotting out of local First Nations leaders to sign another treaty this week a case of pre-election grandstanding?

Or was it the legitimate announcement of the latest significant step in the B.C. treaty process?

Probably a little of both. Regardless of the timing of the transfer of lands to five First Nations, including the Songhees, aboriginal communities stand to benefit greatly from the deal signed Tuesday at the B.C. legislature.

The properties signed over to the Songhees, for example, include the current site of a government liquor store at Esquimalt and Admirals roads, the Provincial Capital Commission office building on Pandora Avenue and a parking lot in James Bay. The deal does not exempt the bands from paying property tax, but the acquisition price is right. The potential economic foothold the Songhees and others gain as landlords, developers or vendors could be significant – they can manage the properties how they see fit, within local rules and regulations.

The key word here is potential. Governments, business and individuals can help empower our aboriginal communities and enhance selfsufficiency through the transfer of lands, offering business coaching services, buying handcrafted products or even mentoring youth. From there, First Nations need to take the next steps themselves.

It’s already happening in some areas. The Songhees are well into the construction of their $16-million health, administration and recreation centre in Esquimalt. And they are partners with Esquimalt Nation in Salish Sea Industrial Services, a marine-based company.

Adding a trio of revenue properties to the mix – if managed well – could further stabilize our aboriginal communities through creating longterm employment for people who have struggled to find work.

The first concrete land agreement in 20 years for the Songhees shows progress in the willingness of the province and First Nations leaders to do what it takes to move closer to finalizing settlements. It also shows more trust in First Nations that they can be good stewards of urban lands, not just those around reserves.

Translink is the first North American transportation authority responsible for the planning, financing and managing of all public transit in addition to major regional roads, bridges, and cycling infrastructure.

Although Greater Victoria is much smaller than Vancouver, the issue remains the same: our region needs a single governing agency that has the authority and appropriate funding to create an integrated transportation plan that spans municipalities and means of travel. Continuing to make individual plans for roads, transit, cycling, infrastructure and rail will never give us an efficient system.

Moreover, the Capital Regional District’s proposition to assume the authority and powers of the Transit Commission is not the solution to this problem, as it is only shifting responsibility for transit planning, without joining it with overall transportation planning.

In order to move towards an efficient regional model, we need a single, united authority that can create an integrated plan. Only with such a regional authority can our transportation system efficiently meet the needs of all of Greater Victoria’s residents.

Ex-Liberal MLA backs up former colleague Clark We live in a province that has weathered the downturn, has a stellar financial record, enjoys low taxes, good health care, a strong education system and has sunny economic prospects.

But listen to the news and it seems every day is a constant hum of negativity about Premier Christy Clark and her government. The pounding of our premier is relentless.

Sure, she’s made mistakes, she’ll be the first to admit

that. But look at what she has achieved. She won the leadership of her party with only 1 of 49 MLAs supporting her. She had to work with a wounded caucus, deal with her predecessor’s baggage and rebuild.

Right off the bat she was derided by the NDP, the pundits and armchair critics as Premier Photo-op. It didn’t matter that she raised the minimum wage, brought in a jobs plan, won a major shipbuilding contract,

rewrote family law legislation, or introduced a commendable budget that held the line on spending. The (sexist) narrative was established. Everything from comments about her cleavage to patronizing claptrap from the good old (mostly) boys.

They didn’t expect her to keep powering on. She renewed her cabinet. She has recruited an exceptional group of new candidates. She brought in a balanced budget and made tough

Readers respond: WiFi, smart meters, recycling Investigate wireless for future news story Re: Questions remain on wireless effects, but evidence growing (Letters, Feb. 8) Tammy Jeske’s letter raised some compelling questions and prompted me to check the two references she gave.

She wrote, essentially, that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, including those emitting from wireless phones, as “possibly carcinogenic to humans�

(Group 2B).

She also pointed to WorkSafeBC’s occupational health and safety regulations, which state: if an IARC Group 2B substance “is present in the workplace, the employer must replace it, if practicable, with a material which reduces the risk to workers.�

In short, the references provided checked out with information available on the IARC and WorkSafeBC websites.

For schools in B.C., the obvious implication is that wireless connections must be replaced, if practicable, with wired connections. “Possibly carcinogenic� is certainly not conclusive, but it is safe to assume that the label is not provided without good reason and evidence.

I also wonder how many schools and workplaces are in contravention of the OHS regulations – and what WorkSafeBC has to say on the issue. This is a good story for a media investigation, whatever the outcome.

In our culture, so many of us automatically give technology the benefit of the doubt since it meets so many needs quickly and cheaply. But when agencies that understand these issues better than most of us are applying labels like “possibly carcinogenic,� it is prudent to better understand what we know and don’t know about REFs. As a user of computers with a wireless connection, a smart

phone and smart meter, it would be an article I would like to read.

Omissions noteworthy in smart meters letter Re: B.C. Hydro responds to attack on its smart meter technology (Letters, Feb. 22) Gary Murphy clearly stated many positive benefits of smart meters. But he neglected to inform us what would happen to the considerable savings B.C. Hydro will make after the elimination of meter reader positions. Will the customer see any of those savings?

He also did not mention if B.C. Hydro intended to follow the European model, where customers are billed proportionally to the demand and cost of generation. Hence, electricity is significantly more expensive during peak periods and cheaper overnight.

I cannot think the benefits he mentions on their own are worth the significant capital expenditure. I fear a cost hike is to come.

Do your homework before post-secondary Before anyone considers post-secondary education, find something you are passionate about and determine what career helps fulfill that passion.

If it is trades training, look at what sector or industry needs skilled workers. If you are considering an undergraduate degree, research where the growth is and for pity’s sake, think about co-operative education as a way to earn income and enhance your CV. If you don’t have money saved up, don’t want to take out a student loan and cannot access the bank of mom and dad, think about the Canadian Forces. And if you don’t really want to work, but love to talk, go into politics.

I’m passionate about theatre,

so the University of Victoria’s program was for me. But I went into it heads up, eyes open, accepting it would be challenging to find work afterward.

By all means take advice, but take responsibility for your own future and do your own research. After all, it’s you who must work at that job – not your parents or anyone else.

Columnist hits the mark in expanding recycling Re: Recycling alone is not enough (Column, Feb. 22) Congratulations to Charla Huber for her excellent editorial on the impending closure of our landfill. Rather than the usual guilt-tripping, sky-is-falling, hand-wringing impotence that usually accompanies environmental calamity reporting, Ms. Huber has shown us that we can all make a difference with concrete examples of waste reduction from her personal life.

Recycling is the last of the 3R’s. The first two are reduce and reuse. I would love to see Ms. Huber have a regular column where she shows us how to make our own laundry soap, dish detergent and tooth paste.

I think many people are ready to do something about the crisis we are in. Small changes collectively add up to big changes.

Meanwhile, where is the scrutiny of Adrian Dix and the NDP? Here we are, less than 12 weeks from election day and Dix has evaded any serious discussion of his plans.

He has carefully cultivated a ‘serious’ image, but there’s nothing serious about the results.

He’s said nothing, refuses to show his cards. Let’s remember

this is a man who backdated a memo while chief of staff to then-premier Glen Clark and was forced to resign over it. So, why do we only hear one side of the story?

Let’s make this a fair playing field, it’s time for some serious media scrutiny on the NDP. As each day ticks down to election day, it’s a free day for Adrian Dix to say nothing.

eadership Victoria is a community-based, volunteer organization committed to developing, recognizing and honouring outstanding community leaders building a vibrant community The Victoria Leadership Awards have been honouring inspired leadership in the community since 2005. Led by Leadership Victoria, the annual ceremony is a partnership between Leadership Victoria, the University of Victoria, the Rotary Clubs of Greater Victoria, the Victoria Foundation and the United Way of Greater Victoria.

Eight prestigious categories recognize an incredible array of passionate and committed leaders, from youth to lifetime achievement. This year’s awards were held on Feb. 25 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

The Lifetime Achievement award was given to Bob Harmon who was profiled in the Jan. 30 edition of the News.

Rotary Community Leadership Award — Gordon Harper and Colin Smith Gordon Harper is a long-time social activist with a particular interest in addictions, mental health and homelessness. Fuelled by his personal experience of recovery, Harper has been providing his knowledge, compassion, kindness and most importantly, his time to people struggling with addictions and mental health issues in our community. Harper has served on many regional committees, several boards and initiatives concerned with the interconnected issues of addictions, mental health and homelessness. Harper was the recipient of the Unsung Hero award in 2009 and the recipient of the United Way Spirit Award in 2011.

University Of Victoria Community Leadership Award — Dr. David Chuenyan Lai and Ana Maria Peredo David Chuenyan Lai is Professor Emeritus with the University of Victoria, and research affiliate with UVic’s Centre on Aging. His research interests and passion for preserving local heritage have greatly benefited our community. His efforts led to the City of Victoria’s Chinatown Rehabilitation Program and its designation as a National Historic Site. He is an inspired promoter of diversity and multicultural understanding. Recently he championed, and was the lead author of, a pamphlet and walking tour map of Victoria’s Chinatown. Lai continues to work with UVic and the Royal B.C. Museum on the Centre for Arrivals exhibit.

Prihar pursued a career in the public sector and is currently a research analyst with the B.C. Ministry of Health. Her passion for being actively engaged in her community began during her volunteer work in high school at the Cowichan District Hospital.

Prihar has found numerous ways to give back since then, from being a UVic model United Nations club member to a primary school healthy eating educator with Lifecycles, to a founding member and chair of the young adult group, United Now, with the United Way of Greater Victoria. Now, as a member of the United Way of Greater Victoria Board of Directors, she continues to provide a strong youth voice to local community issues. Prihar also enjoys playing tennis and biking.

Jean McRae United Way Of Greater Victoria Award For Collaboration And Partnership — Jean McRae Jean McRae is executive director of the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria. She has worked in the field of immigrant services since 1982 in B.C. and Central America. McRae has served on many boards and committees concerned with the issues of immigrant integration, and is past president of the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies of B.C. She currently serves on the Vancouver Foundation’s Health and Social Development Community, is co-chair of the national working group on Small Centre Strategies for the Attraction and Retention of Immigrants, and sits on the executive committee of the Canadian Council for Refugees.

Awards pour in for Black Press newspapers With 24 award nominations across Vancouver Island, Black Press is again proving its might at the annual BCYCNA Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards.

With the short list announced on Feb. 25, “Black Press showed that when it comes to community, we have the best newspaper teams on the Island,” said Mark Warner, president Black Press Vancouver Island.

Of those 24 awards, 14 were picked up

by Greater Victoria newspapers, including five for Monday Magazine, five for Oak Bay News, three for Victoria News and one for Saanich News.

While the BCYCNA judges keeping the ranking of the winners secret until the gala in April, every nominee is guaranteed to place first, second or third.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the work every single person has done this year,” said editorial director Kevin Laird. “These awards are simply the icing on the cake for the teamwork, diligence and dedication to our readers and community that everyone delivers on a day-to-day basis.”

Monday Magazine is nominated in the Portrait/Personality photo category for Al Smith’s cover image of Queen Mudder Lindsay Van Gyn; Joseph Williams’ BlogFarm cartoons were picked for the

The sun is gone on a chilly Victoria afternoon, but Eli Thuot doesn’t seem to notice.

The six-year-old nature kindergarten student is moments into a visit to Esquimalt Lagoon and he is already knee deep in twigs and driftwood, and building a den for himself along the beach. One particular branch, he said, is from an arbutus tree.

“He is coming home with facts I would never have learned, he knows the subtle qualities of tree types,” said mother Dory

Thuot laughing. “It is fascinating watching a kid at that age picking up all that information.”

Six months into the Årst year of a two-year pilot project and based out of Sangster elementary in Colwood, her son Eli is responding well to nature kindergarten, where students spend their mornings going to parks, going on walks or making their way into the Royal Roads University forest rain or shine.

Surviving Purrla The parenting books said it was Åne – all good in fact – for children to attach themselves to toys, blankets or any other “transitional Q SUSAN LUNDY objects.” Apparently, FEATURE WRITER 70 per cent of children develop these strong attachments, but the literature doesn’t offer much advice on replacing these items should something horriÅc happen.

So when my elder daughter, Danica, glued herself to a stuffed kitten called Purrla, my mother anxiety moved beyond ensuring the safety of my kids to constant consideration of the whereabouts and good health of a stuffed cat.

Cozily tucked under an arm, the purring (rattling) Purrla travelled everywhere with Danica, starting from the moment it appeared under the Christmas tree in her kindergarten year. Soccer with a stuffy? No problem, Purrla clung to an armpit. School play with a stufÅe? No problem. Purrla dressed in a miniature version of Danica’s costume and went on stage too.

“She is not stuffed,” Danica claimed.

“She is Ålled with my love.”

More than once in the darkness of night, a blood-freezing scream from Danica’s room pierced my peaceful slumber and sent me stumbling to her side.

“Purrla!” Danica would groggily groan.

I’d pluck Purrla from the Æoor, deposit her back in the bed, and take several deep breaths to calm my hammering heart.

I suffered reoccurring nightmares centred on issues of loss — speciÅcally — the loss of Purrla. What if she FELL OVERBOARD ON A FERRY? What if she TUMBLED INTO AN OUTHOUSE? The terror of it could grip me at any time — like the day an American tourist strolled by.

“My daughter used to have one of those,” he drawled, pointing at Purrla.

(At which point Danica tucked her pet into her shirt and deliberately turned her back). “Called her Yellow Dog. Got so there was only one ear left. Carried that ear everywhere.”

He added ominously, “Better get yourself another one. Just in case.”

His family life was apparently saved by the friend of a friend of a friend who just happened to Ånd an exact Yellow Dog replica “in North Carolina of all places.”

Dear God. I’d ordered Purrla from a timelimited, only-available-here offer at least a year earlier.

I wasn’t the only one suffering Purrla nightmares. Danica’s Kindergarten teacher experienced a few of her own. Purrla became a member of her class, having her own turn whacking the pinata, and inspiring a full-school hunt on the day she was misplaced and eventually found “hiding” under a table.

“Just like kittens will do,” said a relieved Danica.

Fellow kindergartners fell into a horriÅed hush when, as another child held Purrla, one of her whiskers got caught, pulling from one side of her face to the other.

Danica gave a hysterical, my-baby-isfatally-wounded scream and a grim silence fell over the classroom. The teacher dug out a needle and managed to Åx the offending whisker. It was tense, she conÅded later, still a little pale from the experience.

Purrla stuck like glue to Danica’s underarm for the next 18 months. She became ratty, with balled up fur — but Danica’s attachment was unyielding. And because Purrla became an appendage, Danica never lost her. She was just always there, tucked under her arm.

Then, on the Årst day of Grade 2, Danica looked mournfully at her bedraggled pet and decided in the best interest of Purrla’s health, the kitty should stay home and rest on her pillow. Danica continued to sleep with her pet (rattle, rattle all night long) and did not start leaving her behind when we travelled until Åve years later.

Slowly my fear of loss subsided, but even these days, before Danica arrives home from university, I scoot up to her room, breathing though a little tremble of fear, to make sure Purrla is still there, waiting on Danica’s pillow. O

I am not reading anything at the moment as I have just got a Kobo reader and I am still trying to figure out how it all works.

We read with our children at night, usually a book they choose. My son loves sports related books and our youngest daughter is really a better reader than I am, and she will read anything anytime!

Working as an early childhood educator, she has 25 other children that go home to their parents at the end of each work day. She loves to camp, walk on the beach, and walk her dog through Royal Roads. She has been involved with the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for life for seven years running since her mom passed from Cancer five years ago. She is also a member of the Colwood elementary school PAC.

Dallin Madill has been a junior ÅreÅghter with the Metchosin Volunteer Fire Department since January.

“Volunteering with the department gives me a sence of pride,” Madill said. Volunteering is nothing new for this Metchosin teen. He has also volunteered at soup kitchens in Victoria and was a peer councillor when he attended Dunsmuir middle school.

He is currently in Grade 12 at Belmont secondary school and works part-time as a pizza delivery driver. O

A Grade 9 student Kyle Johnston spends much of his time volunteering.

He attends Stelly’s secondary and volunteers at his school. He devotes two hours a week to volunteer at the Children’s Foundation Centre on Wale Road and also volunteers picking up paddocks at Fairisle Farm in North Saainich. He has spent the past season volunteering with the Victoria Shamrocks as a ball boy and water boy.

Last year he volunteered with the Victoria Grizzlies selling jerseys.

“I like to volunteer so I know what’s going on in the community,” Johnston said. His hobbies include horseback riding and playing lacrosse. O

Guides and scouts are marching all the way to the food bank this weekend.

Sunday the children and teens will carry as much as 500 pounds of food from Westshore Town Centre to the Goldstream Food Bank where it will be donated.

The youth collected all the food from family and friends.

Eight-year-old Charlotte Harris is planning to raid her family’s panty for her contributions.

Sadie Twidale, 11, of Colwood is canvassing friends and family for donations.

“This helps people who can’t afford food. I try to collect as much as I can,” Twidale said.

This is the 22nd year of Hike for Hunger, all of them have

been organized by Trudine Wilson, events co-ordinator for Guides Straits District.

The Guides and Scouts leave the mall at 11 a.m. and will gather at the food bank from 1 to 2 p.m.

Education Minister Don McRae presented Laura Verhoeven with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her service to the public education system in B.C. Verhoeven teaches a sustainable resource class at the Metchosin Technical Centre of Pacific Secondary school.

She is a recent Canadian recipient of the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. Verhoeven has been teaching five years.

One recipient heads to Ottawa Dr. Lenora Marcellus, a Colwood resident, received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Governor General at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Marcellus, an assistant professor at the University of Victoria, received the award in recognition of her work in the field of neonatal care.

Posthumous recognition The provincial and federal governments have awarded hundreds of Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals in B.C., but one handed out last week was particularly poignant.

Architect Nick Bawlf, who was well-known in Victoria for his work restoring downtown heritage buildings, was awarded his medal posthumously.

Accepting the medal for Bawlf, who died last August, was longtime partner and fellow heritage advocate, Victoria Coun. Pamela Madoff.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne.

Recipients have made a significant contribution to a province, territory, region or community.

Reynolds secondary is the smallest wrestling team in town. It has two things most Greater Victoria schools don’t: a place to train, and willing coaches.

Because of that, they were able to host members of the only other teams, Esquimalt High and the school district Victoria Bulldogs, for training last week.

“The room could be bigger, but I’m not complaining,” said Reynolds coach Michael Cappus.

The former CIS champion came from wrestlingmad Alberni district secondary and competed for Simon Fraser University. He happens to be in town furthering his education at Camosun College and has linked up with previous Reynolds coach Josh Brakefield, a recent grad who has been instrumental in keeping the program running. They are guiding the school’s few but committed wrestlers.

“There are some more wrestlers on the team, but only the three going to provincials are still training, so this is it,” Cappus said.

Representing Reynolds at the provincial high school wrestling championships in Duncan this week, Feb. 28 and March 1, are Grade 12s Amir Harati and the Aquino brothers, Peter and Paul.

Visiting Reynolds to sharpen up for provincials were Esquimalt wrestlers Carlton Cochran and

Mitchell Keeping and Oak Bay High’s John Fayad, a member of the Bulldogs.

All six have had success at tournaments and are contenders to podium in Duncan.

At the recent Island championships in Ucluelet, the Aquino brothers ended up facing each other for gold in the 63-kilogram category, with Peter getting the edge. Paul attempted to cut weight so as to compete in a different category, but it just didn’t quite happen, he said. In that case, they could end up wrestling for gold again this week.

Cochran (84kgs) and Fayad (60kgs) also won gold at Islands. Harati (66kgs) and Keeping (70kgs) were fourth.

All wrestlers, regardless of club, have to compete for their school at provincials. Even if it doesn’t have a team.

That goes for Nolan Mitchell, a Grade 10 student at Claremont secondary. As the No. 1 seed in the 45kgs class, he is the South Island’s biggest threat to win.

But Mitchell’s case is different. Thanks to a committed family and his obliging work ethic, he has benefitted from weekly commutes to train with the Cowichan wrestling club.

“The biggest barrier this season has been getting (Reynolds wrestlers) into tournaments,” Cappus said.

“That’s where you learn and improve. But not everyone can’t afford the costs. We have the quality, we just need the quantity.” sports@vicnews.com

Rugby centre hosts top sevens This weekend is the third annual Rugby Canada National Invitational University Sevens Tournament at the Centre of Excellence.

The Langford centre will host 25 college and university sevens teams – 15 men’s and 10 women’s – Friday and Saturday.

Rugby Canada recently received Own the Podium funding aimed at boosting efforts to

medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Rugby Sevens is the newest Summer Olympic sport and Canada has the potential to medal in both men’s and women’s competition.

OTP has committed significant funding to assist both programs. This is the first time Rugby Canada’s Men’s Program has received OTP funding; Canada’s Women’s Program was funded last year. Canada’s Women’s Program enjoyed an undefeated 2011 season and a top three global ranking.
