Looming budget decisions in the U.S. may determine whether Abbotsford sees American military aircraft at this year’s airshow. The growing national debt in the U.S., which now stands at more than $16 trillion, has led to potential automatic federal funding decreases in an attempt to control spending. The first instalment of cuts, totalling $85 billion, could begin on March 1, and the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) has said this will affect American military plane attendance at airshows across North America. It means the highly popular Blue Angels and the USAF Thunderbirds aerial demonstration teams, and static displays of military aircraft, may no longer participate. Jim Reith, incoming president of the Abbotsford Airshow, said the issue has led to some uncertainty about which acts will appear. Continued on A7

pl. Doug Buchanan and police dog Titus received a call to help find a stolen car suspect in Mission. The track led to a slough, but there was no sign of the culprit. Some time later, the man was arrested. He said the reason he wasn’t found the previous time was because he had been hiding underwater, breathing through a reed. Such is the nature of the police K9 unit – when the dog can’t find the culprit, there’s usually a good reason. Buchanan, who worked as a dog handler with the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) for 22 years, retired in January. He and his canine counterparts captured countless criminals over the years. They were called to assist at an array of crime scenes – including breakins, robberies, drug busts and murders – to help track down suspects and/or evidence, or to assist with arrests. “The dogs will find things that you and I won’t find unless they’re in plain view,” Buchanan said. As an example, he cited a murder investigation in the area of Downes Road and Mt. Lehman in which the dog found a crucial piece of evidence – a black

He now looks forward to spending his retirement years on a large property outside of the Lower Mainland – with plenty of room for Titus to chase rabbits. Cpl. Doug Buchanan and his canine partners were members of the RCMP’s Lower Mainland Police Dog Services (PDS), which has 41 teams from the RCMP and four from the Abbotsford Police Department.

A total of 97 per cent of people who responded to a survey conducted for the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) said they feel safe in their own home. Darryl Plecas of the Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research, which oversaw the public safety survey, said that number is higher than for any other police agency in B.C. that has asked the same question. The survey went out to 2,200 residents in November. Results were released Tuesday, based on the 486 questionnaires that had been returned. Plecas said the APD also recorded the highest number – 95 per cent – that he has seen for people who are satisfied with the job police are doing in their community. Plecas said another noteworthy result was that the South Asian population recorded a higher percentage of people who said they feel safe in the community compared to non-

South Asians. Plecas said the result is surprising because minority groups often have negative views of police. This can be based on bad experiences that they bring with them to Canada from their homeland. While 92 per cent of survey respondents said they feel safe in their neighborhoods and 88 said they feel safe in the community, they also indicated there were places they wouldn’t feel safe walking at night. The three areas identified were the downtown core near Five Corners and Jubilee Park, the Mill Lake area, and Clearbrook Road and South Fraser Way. Respondents were also asked what issues caused them to be most concerned about their personal safety. Of those who answered the question, 25 per cent said drug activity was their top concern, and 20 per cent listed gangs and gang activity. Other responses were traffic violations (five per cent) and homelessness (three per cent).

Teens recognized as role models Ceremony honours two W.J. Mouat students

Tasha Ellis and Jake Firlotte are both on the honour roll at their school, participate in sports, do volunteer work, and are well-liked by their coaches and teachers. Many might describe them as role models. On Thursday, they will be recognized for just that. Ellis and Firlotte have been selected from all the aboriginal students in the Abbotsford school district to be honoured as role models in a traditional Sto:lo Nation ceremony. The event takes place at their school, W. J. Mouat Secondary. Two drummers in full regalia will lead a procession into the school cafeteria, with Ellis and Firlotte wrapped in traditional blankets, symbolizing that they have warm hearts. Posters of each of the students will later be placed in every school in the district, acknowl-

edging their accomplishment. Michelle Schroeder, aboriginal teaching assistant, said “They’re the kind of kids that their peers really recognize as role models,” she said. Ellis, a Grade 12 student with Cree background, has struggled with a learning disability, but has worked hard to overcome it, Schroeder said. The teen is on the honour roll and has earned an academic scholarship. Earlier this month, she was among 15 students who accompanied Schroeder on a trip to Ottawa, where they met with politicians and aboriginal leaders. Ellis is active in sports, including soccer and track and field, and plays the clarinet in the school jazz band. “She’s a very diligent girl … She just gives her all,” Schroeder said. Firlotte, a Grade 11 student from the Chehalis Indian Band, is a top-ranked wide receiver and defensive back with the Mouat Hawks football team. He is also a track and field athlete, and has previously received aboriginal awards in the areas of athletics, citizenship and academics. Firlotte volunteers in the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army. “He’s just an incredible kid. He’s always smiling. He’s the quintessential nice guy,” Schroeder said. Two role models are selected each year, and are nominated by the district’s aboriginal teaching assistants, youth care workers and staff members at their schools.

If the domino effect takes place and the Wolves resurface in Abbotsford, Chicago will not suspend operations for the coming season. Therefore, that would leave the league with 31 teams. On Point The Heat are moving! Social media was running hot with that rumour on Sunday, thanks to a blog post on the website of the Utica Observer Dispatch, a newspaper in upstate New York. Their blogger suggested that a 10-year deal had been done with the Calgary Flames to relocate their American Hockey League affiliate – the Heat – to the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Curiously enough, it’s where the Abbotsford franchise used to be. The Utica Devils were the New Jersey Devils’ AHL farm club from 1987 to ’93, when they were bought by the Flames. By Monday morning, however, the Heat news was starting to cool. The Flames threw water on the fire (although didn’t quench it entirely) by saying they had been approached by representatives in Utica concerning “an

The Canucks’ farm team is obviously popular out here. The Heat are being wooed in New York. And the Canucks’ two-year affiliation agreement with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves will expire at the end of this season. If you wish to believe ... the planets are lining up!

Direct city tax dollars where they are most needed

The subheading to the article “Furlong paid $20,000 to speak” (Feb.19) informs us, “Economic symposium made profit, city says.”

The body of the article goes on to say that the profit figure was $11,675.96, and we further read: “Revenue was large-

ly gained from sponsorship.” Yet if we eliminate the $10,000 donated by UFV, the $10,000 from the Abbotsford Airport,

and the $5,000 that came from the Global Spectrum family, we instead come up with a loss of $13,324.04. Since the three

I find it shocking that there was yet another traffic fatality on Riverside Road. I can’t imagine the pain and suffering the victim must have endured over a period in excess of three days. This proves that there were no police patrols over the three-day period. This is amazing when you consider there are over 216 cops in Abbotsford. Where were they? Business and people in the area inform me they have never seen traffic enforcement in the area, and yet excessive speeding is very common. As reported in this paper, there were 15 deaths related to traffic collisions in 2010. Far more people are killed in traffic incidents than are killed by gangsters. There is a serious lack of traffic enforcement on Abbotsford streets. Oh yes, the police have a one-day blitz and photo op to justify their existence. For example, there has been no traffic enforcement regarding excessive speeding and tailgating on McCallum Road for over five years. I continually see

people running red lights, speeding and tailgating on area roads. I would suggest that families of victims organize and demand that strict traffic enforcement

be commenced by police. Anything else is considered neglect of duty by police. A large portion of property taxes are dedicated to police services, which in-

cludes traffic enforcement. How many more innocent people have to be killed before action is taken?

A fun run at Mill Lake in Abbotsford on March 17 will raise funds for Free the Children. Murder mystery opens in Mission

Mission’s Opening Nite Theatre is presenting a new murder mystery starting tomorrow (March 1). The group is performing author Thea Bates’ Death Among the Delphiniums. Set in a b u colic Engli s h manor a f e w years sinclaire after t h e Second World War, the play opens with Lady Florence Andering-Ffyffe (played by Mahara Sinclaire) fussing over the decor and annoyed with her awkward daughter. Things quickly descend into a controlled chaos, as a dead body is found in the garden and secrets are rapidly unearthed. Detective Inspector Volper, played by Travis Nick, is called in to solve the murder but is hampered at every turn. Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage have enjoyed 10 years of success on television. Now the duo is travelling across Canada to showcase the new live show MythBusters: Behind the Myths. “We were actually somewhat hesitant about doing something like this because we didn’t want to disappoint expectations of our fans that would come and expect things to be blown up,” said Hyneman during a phone interview with The News. Menno Place celebrates 60 years Menno Place began as the idea of a group of young adults in 1953. They teamed with the Mennonite Church, started a separate governance for the project, which led to the creation of the Mennonite Benevolent Society, and in 1954 the 26bed Menno Home was created. It would grow into one of the largest campuses of care for seniors in the province, including a hospital and multiple buildings. The non-profit organization has spent 60 years assisting those in need of long-term care in the Abbotsford community. Currently, Menno Place spans 11.5 acres of land, between Brundige Avenue and Marshall Road, across the street from the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. It is a thriving community of seniors, residents and their families. Menno Place consists of three communities of care – Menno

Home, Menno Hospital and Menno Apartments, providing a range of full-time care and assisted living. The Primrose Gardens apartments are the most recent addition to the facilities, built in 2010. Going forward, Menno Place hopes to raise $100,000 to upgrade the chapel and increase the provision of spiritual care for residents, regardless of religion. On Saturday, March 2, Menno Place will mark its 60th anniversary with a banquet, held at the Columbia Bible College Gym. It will include entertainment, and an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing spiritual care of the residents and their families. It’s a great way to celebrate the arrival of spring.” When John, Susan, Titty and Roger are granted their wish to camp on an island, they eagerly look forward to a summer full of adventure and fun. Fueled by their imagination and a desire for new experiences, t h e y set sail in their HILDEBRANDT trusty boat, Swallow. When they meet Nancy and Peggy, the self-proclaimed Amazon pirates, and the cantankerous Captain Flint, their adventure turns in an entirely new and exciting direction. “Based on Ransome’s classic stories for young people and set in the Lake District of northwest England during the 1920s, Swallows and Amazons celebrates the importance of imagination and creativity,” said Hildebrandt, who is also directing the show. “Our entire production is built around this central idea. We’ve employed some clever theatrical devices to recreate some of the central props.” They will also use live sound effects. Merchant of Venice UFV tackles controversial tale

In their 33rd theatre season, the University of the Fraser Valley will preform Shakespeare’s the Merchant of Venice as their third production of the 2012/13 season. Shakespeare’s tale the Merchant of Venice is a controversial play that pushes the issue of love, race, trust and mercy. The work poses three questions: where does love come from? Why do people of different races and religions distrust each other? As well as what is the quality of mercy? Theatre department head Bruce Kirkley will direct UFV’s second presentation of Shakespeare’s work, since 1991. The UFV Theatre student cast consists of: Ron Jackson as Shylock, Gabriel Kirkley as Antonio, Rae MacEachernEastwood as Portia and Tim Howe as Gratiano. The production will open at 7:30 p.m on March 8 at the Chilliwack North Campus, at the corner of Yale and Airport roads. Evening shows will run March 9, 15-16 and 21-23. As well as two half price evening shows March 6 and 7.

School calendar update

The Board will make a decision regarding the 2013-14 school calendar at its March 12 regular public meeting. A public survey on two proposed options has now closed, and district staff will present findings at that meeting. There are two proposed calendar options; one that lays out a ‘status quo’ calendar much like the current year’s; the second one proposes starting school a week earlier, in the last week of August, and adding days to four holiday weekends to create four reading breaks. Both options provide for a two-week spring break.

Heat school day game

More than 4,000 of our middle school students cheered on the Abbotsford Heat earlier this month at the second annual Heat School Day Game. It was one of the most enthusiastic – and noisiest - audiences of the year for the Heat. In preparation for the game, students engaged in a number of hockey related curriculum activities to help to improve the quality of their learning experience. Board Chair Cindy Schafer dropped the ceremonial puck at the start of the game, which the Heat won 3-2 over the Rochester Americans.

CORNWELL Edith Aged 82, passed away Monday Feb. 18, 2013. Edie was born Feb. 26, 1930 in Chilliwack. She grew up in Mission on the family farm on 7th Ave. She married Ken in 1954 and they moved to Silverdale where she happily resided for the rest of her years. Edie enjoyed her career as a school secretary for Mission School District. There she made countless friends with the children, parents, and teachers. Edie spent her retirement traveling to Puerto Vallarta, Arizona, and Nevada. She enjoyed the yearly fishing trips with her life long friends. She was a passionate animal lover and gardener. She is survived by her husband Ken, son Robert(Debbie), grand daughters Amber(Brad Smith) and Ashley, and 2 great grand daughters. We would like to thank the staff at Memory Lane in Pleasantview for their wonderful care and support. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Lena passed away peacefully at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital with her family at her side up until the time of her death. Lena was predeceased by her husband, Frank who passed away on January 25, 2010 and by her sister Rita Cameron and brother Len DeBeeld. Lena will be lovingly remembered and missed by her four children: Bob (Ruth), Sandra (Peter) Franz, Brian (Dianne), Mark (Marlene), her nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, her brother John (Val) DeBeeld her sister Alice Westaway and countless friends and extended family. Lena led a full active life; she was kind, caring and friendly to everyone she met. Lena had a great pride in her family and loved each of them deeply; Lena was the matriarch of our family and although the void left through her passing will never be filled, her vibrant spirit and the family values she instilled in each of us will live on forever. A Celebration of Lena’s Life will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11:00 am at Henderson’s Funeral Home at 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC, with Major Lynda Richardson officiating.
