Many of us can still recall the delight of enjoying the water through childhood, including the ‘rite of passage’ of learning how to swim. For some, the ‘sink or swim’ method was the only available option. Thankfully, since 1946, Red Cross swimming lessons have been a popular choice for many Canadian children. Beyond being fun, learning to swim can have a profound impact on the well being of our children and the health of our community - the life skills learned may

As you venture out to enjoy the water this season we encourage you to always take a moment to ensure you are prepared to have a fun and safe experience. Be a positive role model and champion of water safety: always wear a lifejacket when boating, inspect the beach and water conditions before swimming, ensure your backyard pool is properly fenced and equipped with safety equipment, don’t mix alcohol with swimming. Swimming is a great fitness activity – one that people can enjoy for a lifetime.

Deanne Pierson Deanne has been working in the aquatics department since 1986. She has fond memories of lifeguarding on hot, sunny Kamloops days at Pioneer Park beach and the old Centennial Pool in Riverside Park. And when Deanne wasn’t outdoors guarding, she especially loved teaching toddlers to swim. This passion came in handy when, as a self-proclaimed ‘lifeguard mom’, Deanne helped her own five children develop a love and respect for the water through safe water play.

Mom’s #1 rule at her backyard pool is “to always swim with an adult and never alone”. From babies to seniors, from teaching first aid to organizing special events, it is the day-to-day moments of making a difference for our awesome pool patrons that gives Deanne the most job satisfaction today … and for over twenty-five years and counting.

Tournament Capital Centre Information Gym Age Policy

Code of Conduct

Our goal is to promote a friendly, safe and fun environment for everyone.

• A ll youth aged 12-17 years are required to complete a FREE weight room orientation.

• Upon completion of an orientation, youth aged 12-14 are required to use the gyms under direct supervision of a paying adult (18+ years). Youth aged 15+ may use the gym on their own provided they exercise in a safe manner and are respectful of the equipment and others.

• The use of cameras, phones or any other device to record images is NOT permitted in the Tournament Capital Centre without prior management approval and must display appropriate City of Kamloops identification.

• Be respectful of others, their beliefs, opinions, belongings, and feelings.

• Be respectful of directions given by staff or volunteers.

• Ensure conversation, behavior, and language are appropriate for a public facility that caters to all cultures, diversities, and age groups.

Youth ages 12 and up are welcome to use the gyms under the following conditions:

• Drugs, alcohol, and items that would be deemed as weapons are prohibited on site.

• P lease report any witnessed misconduct or suspicious activity to facility staff.

Parking

The City provided 275 stalls on the City site for TCC patrons only. You are welcome to use one of the stalls provided when you are working out, swimming or involved in an activity at the TCC. Please remember to input your stall number into the parking kiosks and take the ticket with you.

Recreation is an essential part of healthy living and our goal is to improve the health and wellness of everyone in our community.

ARCH is a subsidy program that provides an opportunity for people whith a limited income to participate in a variety of recreational activities.

The Neighbourhood Matching Fund supports the creation and delivery of neighbourhood-driven projects that bring neighbors together. Grant applications are accepted four times a year and groups can receive up to $500.

Tournament Capital Grants

Amateur sport organizations and individuals are eligible for events utilizing services and/or facilities within the City of Kamloops.

BC Summer Games Sport Development Grant

The BC Summer Games Sport Development Grant is available to local coaches, officials and sport organizations interested in furthering their knowledge in their respective sport. Examples may include: a Level III coach pursuing Level IV certification; an umpire being certified to train other umpires; a sport organization presenting a high-profile “Keynote Speaker” that might be of value to numerous individuals. Winter Games Legacy Fund

Winter Games Legacy Fund Grants are to support an athlete or group (must be resident(s) of Kamloops) advances beyond local competition or is recruited to a provincial or nationally ranked team. Qualifying events, if applicable, must have taken place within the three months prior to the application. The maximum amount allocated is $150 for individuals and $300 for groups. Shinji Since being part of youth hockey and floor hockey Shinji has matured, increased his fitness, shown improved focus at school and has more in common with friends. This program is open to boys and girls with developmental delays. This floor hockey program is designed to develop your child’s interest in hockey through skill development and playful games. Backyard Pool Safety Is there anything more refreshing than a dip in a pool on a hot Kamloops day? Many people in Kamloops have invested in a backyard pool for ‘cool’ summer entertainment. And as fun as they are, backyard pools can be dangerous. Tragically, most drowning and injuries in backyard pools involve children and young adults. Statistics show that children who drown typically gain easy access to the pool or were left unsupervised; whereas young adults suffer serious spinal injuries from diving into water less than 1.5 metres (5 ft.) in depth.

To avoid tragic accidents please remember these simple guidelines courtesy of the Red Cross: • Tell visitors the pool rules • Always supervise pool activity • Use personal flotation devices (PFD’s) – not toys – for support • Encourage feet first entries • Never dive into an above ground pool • Keep safety equipment nearby • Alcohol and pools don’t mix Good fences are just as important as pool rules – preventing access to your pool could save a life. Check that your fence meets the municipal requirement for height and safety.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

The 10 levels allow for solid progression.

Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed, while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water.

In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all criteria have been successfully completed.

Introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.

Introduction to front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m).

Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Aquatics

Help your child develop a healthy lifestyle through swimming. Your child will learn to swim and stay safe in a fun environment that promotes a personal best and celebrates individual success.

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Introduction to back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. Introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

Refinement of front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduction to elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Build skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduction to whip kick on the front.

Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives.

Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim.

Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Refinement of front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Drownings are Preventable Drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under 10 years of age. Children under 5 are most at risk. Their natural curiosity combined with an almost magnetic attraction to water means that they have a high risk of drowning anytime they’re near water.

• D rownings involving toddlers can be prevented if parents or caregivers are within arm’s reach of their children when they are in or near water.

• Designate a backyard pool lifeguard. An adult should always supervise whenever children are using a pool – in-ground, above ground or wading pool. If you must be absent for a moment, designate another adult to replace you or close the pool until someone can assume supervisory duties.

• Stay tub-side until all the water is drained and you have removed your children from the tub. Most bathtub drownings occur because youngsters were left alone for “just a moment”.

I Love Water Polo

I Love Water Polo (ILWP) is Water Polo Canada’s introductory, grassroots program for boys and girls ages 8-13. In a learn-to-play environment similar to swimming lessons, participants discover the game of water polo and the basic skills involved in aquatic sports. The program also helps to enhance the participants’ swimming, balance, and coordination. No prior water polo experience is required. The only prerequisite is that participants should be able to swim one width of the pool.

The Kamloops Bike Ranch is a 26 hectare area located in the terraced and gullied silt bluffs of pine trees, sage brush, and open grasslands between Valleyview and Juniper Ridge neighbourhoods. The initial site has an elevation change of 132 m over its 1.1 km length.

Kamloops has a worldwide reputation in the sport of mountain biking. For many years Kamloops’ hills and riders have been featured in the adrenaline and gravity rushing films such as “Pulp Traction” and “Cranked”.

Its unique climate and terrain and the variety of riding that can be found have already attracted riders from all over the globe.

Phase 1 features a fast-flowing, A-line style downhill trail boasting a multitude of tables and “berms” rated for the expert rider; a jump park for expert and intermediate riders; and a BMX track to Canadian Cycling Association standards.

How to Buy the Right Helmet for Biking There are different types of helmets for different sports and activities.

It is important when choosing a bicycle helmet to make sure that it is specifically designed for cycling (not hockey, skiing, football, etc.), providing the protection you need.

• H elmets should have adequate vents to allow for airflow to the head.

• A void helmets with pointed shapes, thin straps, and complicated adjustments.

• W hen you place your helmet on your head, it should sit low. The brim of the helmet should be about two fingers width (1-2 cm) above the eyebrows.

• T he helmet should not be tilted forwards or backwards.

• T he chinstraps should go over both ears in the shape of a V. The chinstrap should be secure around the chin, with room for one finger to fit between the strap and the chin.

Learn fencing, the ancient art of nobility and one of the four original modern Olympic events. Important Safety Information Our goal is to promote a safe and positive swim. Please review with all posted safety rules and report to a lifeguard if you need assistance.

Admission Policy: Children 6 years of age or under must always be accompanied in the water and be within arm’s length of a parent or other person 16 years of age or older. Ratio of children 6 years or under to parent/guardian must be no greater than three to one.

Diving Boards: Children must be 7 years of age or older to use the 3m or 5m diving boards.

Hot Tub, Steam Room, and Sauna: Children 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (16 years or older).

Waterslides: Children under 42 in. (1.07 m) in height are not permitted on the waterslide. Children 6 years of age and under who meet the height restriction must be closely supervised by an adult. Single riders only - no chains or multiple riders allowed, including parents with children. See posted “Water Slide Rules” for full details.

Wellness Centre and Weight Room: Youth ages 12-17 must complete an orientation prior to using the weight room. Upon completion of an orientation, youth ages 12-14 MUST be directly supervised by a paying adult. Dry shirts, shorts, and close-toed shoes are required.

Home & Personal Safety Whether you live in a house or an apartment; regardless of whether you rent or own, you can have a direct impact on your safety and security, as well as your neighbours’.

• G et to know the people who live around you so that you can share an understanding of normal patterns of neighbourhood.

• Address maintenance problems promptly (e.g. burnt out lights, defective locks, etc.)

• Do not store valuables in a shed/storage locker as they are more vulnerable to break-ins.

• Keep your doors locked, even if you are home.

• Install deadbolt locks on exterior doors (minimum one inch throw).

• Reinforce windows and sliding patio doors with anti-lift devices, locks on the inside tracks, or a wooden block to limit the ability to pry them open.

• If you are an apartment dweller (or visitor), never hold the lobby door open or buzz someone in that you don’t know.

Did You Know?

A pedestrian who encounters a flashing “Don’t Walk” signal while he/she is crossing the crosswalk should proceed across as quickly as possible. NCCP COMPETITION DEVELOPMENT  PREVENTION & RECOVERY Coaches trained in Prevention & Recovery will be able to identify common injuries in your sport and develop appropriate prevention and recovery strategies to keep your athletes injury-free during training and competition; offer valuable information and guidance on hydration, nutrition and sleep as they relate to injury prevention; choose skills and drills that help athletes perform appropriate warm-ups and cooldowns; develop functional evaluations for an athlete’s return to play; implement recovery and regeneration techniques to help an athlete maintain or return to optimal performance post injury.

(7.5 hours classroom time - not including breaks) PACIFICSPORT FIELD TESTING KIT CERTIFICATION The “Field Testing Kit” is a transportable kit containing all the equipment necessary to conduct a battery of field tests like vertical jump testing, beep test, height/weight, push up and more. The kit is not specific to one sport and can be used to test athletes from any sport. In addition to the equipment, the kit also contains data collection sheets, access to an online database, workbooks for coaches, and laminated field testing cards for each test. Coaches trained to use the field testing kit will be able to rent the kit from PacificSport to use to test their athletes.

NCCP COACH DEVELOPMENT GRANT The 2011 Western Canada Summer Games Society has chosen PacificSport Interior BC to be a recipient of one of the Western Canada Games Legacies. PacificSport Interior BC will receive $50,000 for coach certification support throughout the region.

The fund will be set up for anyone who wishes to take a NCCP Coaching Course and will be reimbursed upon completion of the course. The injection of financial support will help any person wanting to advance their knowledge in coach education.

PacificSport will also assist the Provincial Sport Organizations and Local Sport Organizations wishing to have any NCCP Courses in the Interior BC region with this funding.
