Our precious eyesight is often overworked in this age of computers and televisions, whose screens we often squint at for hours in poor light conditions and without breaks. Eye examinations with eye care professionals at regular intervals are advisable to correct computer eye strain and other problems.

Optometrists examine and evaluate the overall health of the eyes, taking into account any of a patient’s medical history that might influence their eye health. They then measure all the physical aspects of the patient’s eye using instruments and standardized tests and take steps to correct failing sight with optical aids, such as glasses and contact lenses.

They also detect diseases and other deformations that can lead to more serious consequences. In the case of a pathology, such as glaucoma or a functional problem, the optometrist will refer the patient to the appropri-

ate health care professional.

It is recommended that people of all ages have vision checkups on a regular basis. Young children might not even notice a deterioration of their sight if it takes place over a long

Estate can provide for charity

Do you sometimes feel like you get a letter from a charity every week asking for a donation?

As much as we would like to be help these worthwhile charities, these days cash is tight. With rising electrical costs, housing prices and the worst has to be; the rising cost of gasoline, if you live on a fixed income, how can you possibly help your favorite charities and make a difference in your community?

There is a way, in fact, there are several ways. You’ve heard the saying that most of us are richer after our death than we were when we were alive, so why not consider designating some of your assets to

your favorite charity through your will. When writing or updating your will ask your legal advisor to have either a percentage or specific amount from the residue of your estate directed to your charity.

It might be more convenient for you to give a specific piece of property like a home, securities or other financial assets, and the tax benefits are often quite substantial. Even a small percentage of your estate can be worth a great deal of money when you consider the value of your residence and your investments.

So what other options are available to you? Have you decided you really don’t need your RRSP or RRIF? When a donor names their charity’s foundation as the direct beneficiary of a RRSP or RRIF, the donor’s estate is entitled to a donation receipt for the amount paid out on death.

Early intervention makes a difference The OSNS Child Development Centre is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving children from birth to school age and their families in the South Okanagan and Similkameen region.

A volunteer board of directors governs the organization, working with the executive director who is responsible for the operation of the centre. The board consists of both parents and community members.

The OSNS holds contracts with the Ministry for Child and Family Development to provide services to children who have special needs. These early intervention services include speech-language therapy, occupational and physiotherapy, child psychology and a specialized program for children who have an autism diagnosis. There is also an opportunity for family support as well as Kinderplace, an integrated preschool program.

Feeding issues, including gagging or choking, difficulty starting solids and picky eating can also be addressed.

Occupational and physiotherapists can assist with problems with movement such as sitting, crawling, walking, running, balancing or co-ordination in riding a tricycle and so on. They also address concerns of picking up small items, holding a crayon, using scissors, drawing pictures, building with blocks or doing puzzles. They can help with children who have a fear of movement, are overly active or are sensitive to sounds, tastes, or touch.

Be prepared for change in lifestyle

Most of us have experienced major lifestyle changes as we progress through whatever life may hand us — moving out of the family home, getting married and moving away to live in a new city or country, moving away due to a new job or to follow your spouse’s work, downsizing as the kids leave, etc. When these situations arise, we typically sit down and analyze the pros and cons of making such a move and how we will handle all the specific details of executing major changes to our lifestyle.

It appears that, as we age, we truly procrastinate with the planning that is necessary to work out the details of how we will live out our lives in our very senior years. Realistically, it is not a topic that many of us want to address and yet it is probably one of the most important decisions that we will make, in order to ensure the highest

possible quality of life.

Here are some suggestions on how to put a plan in place to streamline the process of making the decision to move into an assisted living or care home: n Make a detailed list of your current monthly living expenses. n Make a list of care homes in your community that offer the type of care or living environment that you are looking for. Independent living/assisted living or complex care. n Phone and inquire as to the monthly rates and what exactly the monthly rate includes and if it sounds good, make an appointment to have a tour. n Encourage family and friends to provide their input to assist you with this process and suggest that they come along with you on the tours? The more input the better. n Once you have completed touring, list the pros and cons of each site.

n Go back to your original list of monthly expenditures/income and calculate what costs will be covered by the care home and what costs will be left for you to pay out of your income? n Once you have narrowed down which assisted living or care home interests you most, consider putting your name down on their waitlist.

No one really believes that the time will come that moving to a residential care home will be necessary, however, the reality is that there are no guarantees to our future good health.

If it should unfold that we are suddenly told that we cannot return to our home, and that we will need to move to a residence that provides different levels of care — this decision will be much easier on ourselves, family and friends, when we have put some plans in place for this major lifestyle change.

If you can`t go to them, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. will bring a mountain of information to you.

Next month the society launches a free tele-support and learning group for local caregivers of a family member with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia who is living at home.

The eight-session pilot project is designed specifically for area residents who are unable to attend support or education sessions in person due to geography, disability or other reasons, said facilitator Jan Robson.

Meetings will be conducted over the phone, on Friday afternoons, beginning on March 15 and running through May 10.

The weekly meetings remove a barrier for caregivers who want the benefits of a support group but can`t physically attend one.

zheimer’s disease and other dementias, and better communication skills for interacting with the person with dementia,” Robson says.

Other benefits include improved problem-solving and self-care skills, better knowledge of — and access to — resources, and an expanded support network.

Each call will include up to eight family caregivers. Participants only need a standard telephone.

They call a toll-free number at the scheduled time and will be able to hear and speak with one another at all times during the meetings, which run from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Tips to help you survive the flu season

I am a retired pharmacist from Alberta, who has spent my career talking to my customers about their health problems and prevention as opposed to treatment. In my research I discovered the healing power of an inexpensive super vitamin about 10 years ago. Shortages of Vitamin D in the body cause all sorts of health problems, ranging from immune deficiencies to cancer.

Adequate levels of Vitamin D can prevent and fight diseases such as the flu, colds and bronchitis. During flu season, I take three tablets of Vitamin D 1,000 units each morning with breakfast. If I feel the flu coming on, I use Oscillocococinum, which is called the flu buster in Europe. This is a homeopathic preparation for the relief of flu symptoms. At the onset of flu symptoms, such as fever, chills, body aches and headaches, dissolve the entire contents of one tube under the tongue.

Repeat two more doses at six-hour intervals.

I have stopped every flu attack I have had and I have not had a flu shot for 20 years. I never missed a day of work because of the flu. As a pharmacist, I dealt with sneezes, snotty and otherwise miserable clients on a daily basis who were sick with the flu and colds.

I believe we should all take Vitamin D all year round to maintain good health. However, if you haven’t loaded the body with proper Vitamin D levels by the start of flu season to prevent getting the flu, you need to load with seven tablets per day of 1,000 IU, with breakfast for the first week, followed by three tablets with breakfast to sustain healthy levels.

We should also wash our hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer any time we come in contact with a sick person or if we sneeze our use the washroom. If you get the flu, do not go

to work and pass the flu to the people you work with. I am sure they will appreciate your gift. Prevention works so much better than treatment.

How much Vitamin D is too much?

Toxicity is rare and occurs only with excessive doses of 30 tablets daily for a month in adults.

Do not use acetaminophen products for colds or flu as it will make your cold last longer. Also, the U.S. and Canadian governments have posted bulletins warning of their concern about liver damage caused by overuse of these products. In the U.S., acetaminophen is the leading cause of liver damage and sends 56,000 people to the emergency room annually. Because so many products contain acetaminophen, when you combine the products it becomes a greater concern. Read labels carefully and remember that more drugs are not better.

Healthy Living Fair coming to Penticton The Okanagan Similkameen Healthy Living Society and the Healthy Living Coalition will be hosting the annual Healthy Living Fair on March 2.

Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton is already challenging other mayors, businesses and community members in the Okanagan Similkameen to make a commitment to live a healthier lifestyle by signing up to be a member of the society and receiving a challenge certificate.

During the week leading up to the Healthy Living Fair, organizations will be hosting healthy and fun activities, while the fair itself will feature demonstrations, speakers,

Heart disease describes numerous conditions

Few people are unaware of heart disease and its potentially devastating effects. But many people may not known that the term “heart disease” is a blanket term used to describe several health problems related to the heart.

According to the World Health Organization, ischaemic heart disease, which is characterized by a reduced blood supply to the heart, is the leading cause of death across the globe.

Though many conditions are characterized as ischaemic heart disease, many others are not, and the WHO notes that other heart conditions, including stroke, are also among the top 10 most deadly diseases in the world. The following is a rundown of some of the more common heart conditions, many of which can be prevented if men and women make the right lifestyle choices.

AnginA — Angina occurs when a person has chest pain or discomfort around their heart because the muscle is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina can be a byproduct of elevated levels of stress or overexertion and may even be caused by clogged arteries. All cases of angina are not the same. Stable angina is the most common form, and usually follows

a pattern that is common among patients. Unstable angina is less predictable, while variant angina, the rarest form of the condition, occurs while a person is at rest. Rest and medicine are at the root of treating angina, which is more easily treated once its cause has been determined.

Atherosclerosis — Atherosclerosis is characterized by the buildup of fatty materials in the arterial walls. This fatty material can harden over time, restricting blood flow and resulting in calcium deposits. Daily exercise and a healthy diet void of high-fat, high-cholesterol foods are two ways to prevent or treat atherosclerosis. cArdiAc Arrest — Cardiac arrest is a culmination of several heart conditions, including angina and atherosclerosis. A blood pressure above 120 over 80 is considered high, and that high figure might be caused by salt and water levels in the body and the condition of the body’s kidneys, nervous system and blood vessels, as well as the body’s hormone levels. Those are just a few of the benefits of dietary fat, which is an essential element of a healthy diet. But overconsumption of dietary fat can be dangerous, and many people simply need to trim some fat from their diets. One way to do that is to reduce how much butter, shortening or oil you use when cooking. For some recipes, you may be able to cut suggested portions of such ingredients by half without replacing them; however, for others, especially those for baked goods, these items may have to be replaced. In the case of the latter, find a suggested alternative to highfat items, and only use half of the high-fat item listed in the original recipe. Chances are you won’t taste the difference, but your body will be better for it.

SubSTiTuTe healThier fare — Substituting items is another way to turn a favourite dish into a healthier dish without altering the flavour dramatically, if at all. For example, instead of cooking with enriched pasta, purchase whole-wheat or whole-grain pastas, which

are higher in fibre and lower in calories. If a recipe calls for using milk, choose fatfree milk instead of whole milk. Doing so reduces your fat intake by nearly eight grams per cup.

Recipes can even be made healthier by simply cutting back on the main dish and adding more vegetables. Instead of using the recommended amount of meat or chicken, scale back and make up for it with additional vegetables, which reduces your caloric and fat intake while adding more vitamins and minerals to your diet.

Change your meThodS — Certain cooking techniques are healthier than others. Frying foods or cooking with fat, oil or salt is not the healthiest way to prepare a meal. Some of your favourite dishes that call for frying or cooking in oil can be just as flavourful if you opt for healthier methods like braising, broiling, grilling, or steaming. When recipes call for basting foods in oil or drippings, forgo these unhealthy options and baste foods in vegetable juice or fat-free broth instead.

What you use to cook can also be healthy or unhealthy. Nonstick cookware won’t require you to use oil or butter to keep foods from sticking to the pan. This reduces the amount of fat and calories you will consume, and you likely won’t notice a difference with regards to flavour.

Men and women who enjoy food and cooking their own meals can take several steps to make those meals healthier without sacrificing flavour.

Antidepressants can be a problem in the bedroom One in eight Canadians will be hospitalized because of a mental disorder in their lifetime.

In Canada, direct and indirect costs of mental illness are tagged at $14.4 billion. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is among the most incapacitating conditions in the world. 11 per cent of Canadians suffer from depression at some time in their lives; with seven out of 10 patients with depression are in the workforce.

Depressive symptoms are closely associated with psychosocial functioning in patients suffering from depression. Restoration of function is the goal of treatment of depression.

Psychosocial functioning generally describes a person’s ability to perform daily tasks and to interact with others. This involves specific areas of marital, social, occupational, school and physical functioning, as well as life satisfaction.

From a patient’s perspective, resolving of depressive symptoms were among the top factors identified, several other factors came out ahead, including participating in and enjoying relationships with family and friends, feeling in emotional control, feeling like your usual self, return to usual level of functioning at work, home or school and the presence of

positive mental health. Treatments for depression must therefore not only target depressive symptoms, but also the significant impairment in functioning experienced by people with depression.

Treatment of depression has improved with the emergence of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) antidepressants. Despite significant advances in the treatment of MDD, between 30 and 50 per cent of depressed patients have an inadequate response to the first antidepressant therapy.

MDD often recurs, and an incomplete recovery from an index episode has been shown to increase the risk of chronicity and recurrence.

Those who do not have a response to medication within two weeks are unlikely to respond.

Despite the need for treatment duration of six months or longer, 28 per cent of primary care patients stop antidepressant therapy at one month and 60 per cent of patients stop antidepressant therapy before six months. The most common reasons for noncompliance are “have trouble remembering to take it” (43%), “gained a lot of weight” (29%), “unable to have orgasm” (20%), and “lost interest in sex”

Should you get the shingles vaccine?

Shingles is a painful rash that usually occurs on one side of the body or face. It is caused by the herpes zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in the body and can come back later in life as shingles. The rash can last for several weeks but there is the potential for worse complications including nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia) that can affect daily activities such as walking and sleeping. This pain can be burning or stabbing and linger for months or even years.

Although antiviral treatments are available to reduce the length and severity of a shingles infection, getting

the vaccine is the best defense to avoiding potential complications. The risk of getting shingles starts to increase after the age of 50. It is not necessary to know whether or not you have had chickenpox in order to receive the vaccine (although it is thought that most adults have been exposed to chickenpox during childhood).

The vaccine reduces the risk of shingles by 50 per cent in people age 60 years and older, and up to 70 per cent in those between the ages of 50 and 59. Even if you have had shingles in the past, it is recommended to receive the vaccine. It is not yet known if the protection from the vaccine lasts beyond four or five years.

Side effects are minor — about half of the people immunized for shingles

experience pain, warmth or swelling at the injection site. The injection is given just under skin of the upper arm, rather than in the muscle like other vaccines. People who are undergoing treatment for cancer or on other immunosuppressant medications should not receive the vaccine. Your doctor or pharmacist can determine whether or not the shingles vaccine is appropriate for you.

Penticton firefighters camp out for muscular dystrophy Penticton firefighters will battle the elements in their latest fundraiser and awareness campaign for muscular dystrophy.

A rooftop campout is scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 2, when firefighters will stay on the roof of the Penticton Safeway building in shifts, eating and sleeping on the roof as donations are taken below at the Safeway registers and online. Proceeds go to Muscular Dystrophy Canada, an organization with the mission to improve the quality

of life for people living with neuromuscular disorders through equipment purchases and support services, as well as research funding.

“We are hoping Mother Nature is good to us, but we are ready for whatever temperatures and inclement weather might be headed our way,” said Ryan Bazley, Penticton Fire Department fundraising co-ordinator. “The Penticton Fire Department is honoured to help raise the profile of Muscular Dystrophy Canada and the impor-

tance of their work.”

Snoring could be a sign of sleep apnea Is it important to get a good night’s rest? Medical evidence is increasingly demonstrating that adequate sleep is critical to our overall health. Unfortunately in this day and age, the quiet epidemic of sleep disruption problems is resulting in a sacrifice of our quality and quantity of sleep. The negative effects on our health are worrisome, but often the most noticeable symptom of a sleep problem in the household is a noisy bedroom.

The noises produced by snoring are well understood, as the soft tissue of the upper airway vibrates from the passage of air in and out of the body.

Sometimes snoring is the extent of the problem, but often it is just a symptom of a more serious problem known as sleep apnea, in which the breathing actually becomes obstructed during sleep. The distinctive features of sleep apnea are frequent waking or partial waking episodes at night, and disrupted breathing, gasping, or choking for

air during sleep.

Snoring can be thought of as a partial obstruction of the airway, while sleep apnea is a total blockage for a short time. People that have these sleep disruptions often notice that they have difficulty in concentrating or staying awake during the day, or may experience headaches or sore throat upon waking, among other symptoms.

Snoring, and the more mild forms of sleep apnea have the possibility to be treated by your dentist. Highly trained dental personnel using specialized equipment can test the airway and determine the best course of treatment.

Dentists are involved in this process because often the first recommendation for snoring is to construct a dental appliance. By use of a simple and comfortable appliance worn over the teeth, the jaw can be repositioned to eliminate or reduce the snoring sounds. Getting fitted properly for an

oral snoring appliance is easy, noninvasive, non-surgical, and much less of a lifestyle change than the CPAP machine. In some cases the oral appliance may actually replace the CPAP altogether.

As in all things medical, the proper diagnosis is critical. Healthy ways to speed up your metabolism Dieters are often aware of metabolism and its effect on an individual’s weight. Metabolism is a process that serves a host of important functions, including converting food and drink into energy and using energy to construct certain components of cells.

For the perpetual dieter, metabolism can be a natural-born enemy, a process that simply isn’t fast enough for dieters to lose weight. Even more frustrating, a person’s metabolism can hinge on genetics and gender.

When the body does not have enough water, several of its functions, including its ability to burn calories, slow down. Muscles are roughly 70 percent water, so if they are not fully hydrated they cannot generate energy, affecting your metabolism. In addition, the body is not as effective at using fat as fuel when it is dehydrated, further slowing your metabolism. Staying hydrated is as easy as drinking enough water throughout the day. How much water an individual needs to stay hydrated is open to debate among medical professionals, but one study found that adults who drink eight or more glasses of water per day burned more calories than those who drank four glasses of water per day.

Vitamins’ role in cancer prevention risk for specific cancers.

For example, a study published in 2010 found women who had high levels of vitamin A and C in their bodies, whether from diet or supplement use, had fewer cases of cervical cancer compared to women with lower levels of these vitamins.

Vitamin B6 has been known to have various benefits, including reducing a person’s risk of developing lung, breast and colon cancer. Those with high blood levels of B6 have a lower risk, but there is no proof that taking B6 supplements will have the same benefits. Some studies indicate that vitamin E supplements may reduce men’s risk of developing prostate cancer.

Studies in the 1970s suggested that high doses of vitamin C could be an alternative cancer treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic. These findings

Others believe that vitamin supplements will ease certain ailments or help prevent diseases, such as cancer.

Beliefs such as these have helped the dietary supplements business become a billion-dollar industry.

There have been many clinical studies conducted to look into the correlation between vitamin supplements and the prevention of certain types of cancer. Understanding the results can be confusing. There is no magic formula for consuming a broad-spectrum vitamin supplement to serve as a blanket remedy for preventing cancer. However, there have been some studies that show certain vitamins may help lower

B.C. residents must replace CareCard with B.C. Services Card Over the next five years, eligible British Columbians between the ages of 19 and 74 will be required to replace their CareCard with the new B.C. Services Card by renewing their enrolment in the Medical Services Plan.

The current CareCard was introduced in 1989 and has not been significantly updated over

the last 20 years. The new B.C. Services Card takes advantage of significant advances in technology since that time, to provide a more convenient and secure piece of identification with enhanced features to protect citizens’ personal information.

The new card is more secure as it includes a photograph of the beneficiary, anti-forgery fea-

tures, identity proofing and an expiry date.

To get a new B.C. Services Card, eligible British Columbians can simply enrol when renewing their driver’s licence.

People who do not drive can still enrol at the nearest location where driver’s licences are issued. Once a person enrols, they will be issued a new B.C. Ser-

vices Card, or a combined card, and will need to re-enrol every five years. Children and certain groups of adults, such as the elderly or those in residential care or extended hospital care — for whom renewed enrolment would be impractical or present a hardship — will be exempted from re-enrolling or managed through special arrangements.

Ways to fend off workplace fatigue Fatigue can prove a formidable foe to anyone. Exercise enthusiasts and couch potatoes alike periodically can suffer from fatigue, which can affect performance at work and one’s relationships with friends and family.

Fatigue can be temporary or chronic, and while quick fixes like an energy drink might work for a little while, such solutions may only mask fatigue for a brief period before it returns once the stimulant wears off. Many times fending off fatigue involves making some lifestyle changes that can boost your energy over the long haul and make fatigue a distant memory.

Those who took brief, frequent breaks were better at fighting fatigue and more productive at work than those who did not. A short break of five to 10 minutes can be enough to provide an immediate energy boost and fend off feelings of fatigue. hit thE road, JaCk — Another way to effectively fight fatigue is to get walking. A decades-old study conducted by a researcher at California State University, Long Beach, found that walking briskly for 10 minutes provides people with more energy than eating a candy bar. Though the candy bar led to an initial energy boost, that boost died down within an hour, whereas the boost provided by a brisk walk increased energy levels for roughly two hours. Get up and walk around the office or take a brisk walk around the block or the parking lot of your office complex. You’ll come back to your desk refreshed and ready to resume your workday.

Simple steps can improve memory Everyone forgets things from time to time. Periodically forgetting where you left your keys is likely not indicative of a bad memory. But some people find themselves forgetting things more frequently, a troubling development for those who can’t explain their sudden loss of memory.

Memory loss is often considered to go hand-in-hand with aging. As a person ages, conventional wisdom suggests memory will begin to fade. But sometimes memory loss has nothing to do with aging, and a lot to do with a brain that isn’t sharp because of an unhealthy lifestyle. The following are a few ways men and women can improve their memory.

Get some sleep — Men and women who aren’t getting enough sleep can almost certainly blame that lack of shut-eye for at least some of their memory loss. When you don’t get enough sleep, your brain’s ability to think critically, solve problems and even be creative is compromised considerably. In addition, research has shown that memoryenhancing activities occur during the deep-

est stages of sleep, further highlighting the importance of getting a full night of interruption-free rest.

Hit tHe Gym — Exercise is another activity that can improve memory. Daily physical exercise increases the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain while reducing the risk for certain disorders, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, both of which can lead to memory loss. manaGe stress effectively — Stress has a host of negative side effects, not the least of which is its impact on your memory.

Chronic stress that goes untreated can destroy brain cells and damage the region of the brain that deals with the formation of new memories as well as the retrieval of older memories. Numerous studies have shown that men and women cite their career as their primary source of stress. Since quitting your job is likely not an option, find ways to manage your stress more effectively. Other ways to manage stress include making time to relax and recognizing that you have limits while seeking the help of others.

make some dietary cHanGes — Diet can also have an impact on memory. What you eat is fuel for both your body and your brain, and a poor diet can have a negative impact on your memory. Be sure to include omega-3 fatty acids, sources of which include salmon, tuna and other cold water fatty fish, in your diet.

Foods with antioxidants, including fruits and vegetables, can also protect your brain cells from damage, which can have a positive impact on your memory. Leafy green vegetables like spinach, romaine lettuce and arugula as well as fruits like apricots, mangoes and cantaloupe are good sources of antioxidants.

A diet high in saturated fat, which is found in red meat, whole milk, butter and cheese, has been found to have a negative impact on memory.

Loss of memory is often a momentary lapse, but those who find themselves becoming more and more forgetful can take steps to improve their memory and their quality of life.

Too much iron is unhealthy

If you have European or Celtic roots, you may be at risk for developing hereditary hemochromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes you to over-absorb and retain too much dietary iron. The excess iron builds up in your organs and tissues, and over time can lead to serious diseases and early death.

If you have two or more of the following symptoms which are otherwise unexplained, contact the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society and inquire about the proper tests for iron overload: n Chronic fatigue n Loss of body hair n Loss of libido and sex drive; impotence n Abdominal distension and discomfort (bloating) n Thyroid problems n Sudden weight loss n Elevated liver enzymes, glucose and triglyceride levels n Personality changes, mood swings; anger and depression n Menstrual irregularities, premature menopause n Arthritis (knuckles: first and second finger and thumb) n Chondrocalcinosis n Diabetes (adult onset type 2) n Enlarged liver, liver diseases including cirrhosis n Bronzing or greying of the skin n Cancers (metastasized from the liver) n Heart arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy n Heart disease; congestive heart failure Treatment for hemochromatosis involves therapeutic removal of blood. Knee brace can protect and support Two of the main kinds of custom knee braces are: ProPhylactic knee braces — These are designed to protect knees from injuries during contact sports like football, hockey, skiing or motocross racing.

Functional braces — These give support to knees that have already been injured. Ligamentous injury from a fall, accident or sport. Osteoarthritic bracing due to medial or lateral oseteoarthritis of the knee. Often used to prevent or postpone knee replacement surgery.

In general, functional braces and prophylactic knee braces are the most effective. Braces help some people more than others. Some people are afraid that using a knee brace will make their knee weaker. This is not the case, in our experience patients wearing a custom-made knee brace generally find the brace offers them enough support

and pain reduction in their knee they are able to become more active again, effectively strengthening the knee with the added exercise. Think of a knee brace more as “body armour” for the knee and not as a “crutch” for it to rely on.

Here at Action Orthotic & Prosthetics we offer a wide variety of knee braces, both “custom made” from a circumferential cast of a patient’s leg, and “custom fit” designs, depending on our patient’s need. We work in conjunction

with your doctor and/or orthopedic surgeon to get you into the right brace for your needs.

With a prescription from your doctor, and an in-depth biomechanical report from us, you should be able to be reimbursed by your extended medical plan. We also work closely with the government fee-paying agencies that help fund orthoses of any type for eligible patients. WCB, Ministry of Disability and income assistance, DVA (Veterans Affairs) and NIHB (Treaty) being our main agencies.

You will be assessed by one of our certified orthotists, who specialize in orthotic bracing from head to toe. Our on-site laboratory allows us to modify our casts and fabricate most of our orthoses on-site for a faster turnaround time, easy modifications to your brace while you wait, and most everything is made on-site by the orthotist who assessed you initially.
