Visitor centre most visible of CVEDS undertakings The Comox Valley Economic Development Society’s (CVEDS) goal is to promote the Valley and expand our economic base to enhance wealth and employment opportunities Record Staff The Comox Valley Economic Development Society’s (CVEDS) goal is to promote the Valley and expand our economic base to enhance wealth and employment opportunities, so what are some of the programs and initiatives its been working on during the past year?

Visitor Centre Since its grand opening in April, the Vancouver Island Visitor Centre (VIVC) has been a huge success, according to CVEDS’ manager of marketing and communications Lara Greasley.

By September the centre had already surpassed the total number of visitors for 2011, and by the end of the year, over 30,000 visitors had come through the centre — a 19-per-cent increase in a par-

tial year of operations compared to 2011.

It won three awards, the Tourism Vancouver Island Sustainability Award, Vancouver Island Real Estate Board Best Institutional Award and Judges Choice Award.

According to Greasley, the visitor guest book best shows the success of the centre.

“The visitor guest book, that has captured remarks from guests from New Zealand, to Nova Scotia and North Carolina, probably gives the best insight with comments stating this is ‘not your average tourist bureau,’ that it is ‘informative, unique and world class’ and that they ‘would return,’ “ says Greasley.

She adds that over 30 accommodations, tours and attractions can be booked through the centre, See FIVE-YEAR, page 4

It was a very busy year for the Village and the first year of this council’s term. Highlights in 2012 include construction for a new groundwater source and replacement of the west Dunsmuir Avenue water main, which will bring excellent quality water to parts of the village and help reduce water waste from the old water lines.

Work was also comLESLIE BAIRD pleted on improvements to the wastewater treatment lagoon, a new website, a review of engineering services, corporate energy plans for the reduction of greenhouse gases, and the improvement of bylaw enforcement services.

We have begun 2013 with a bang with the start of the official community plan review, continued work on the Village Park master plan and an active transportation plan, work to identify community greenhouse gas reduction targets, the start of a road and utility rehabilitation plan, and continued implementation the community forest management plan.

In 2013 we will also start work on construction projects to replace underground sewer and storm mains and to improve the stability of water reservoir dams. We also continue to implement the water meter project with water consumption billing to start in 2014.

Cumberland council is very proud of the achievements made in the past year and is looking forward to another productive and successful year in 2013.

Our Conservative government remains focused on job creation and economic growth. Since July 2009 Canada has created over 900,000 net new jobs, with 270,000 created last year alone. This represents the strongest job growth record in the entire G-7.

While we are proud of what we have accomplished during the global economic downturn, we JOHN DUNCAN realize that there is still more work to be done.

That is why we will continue to invest in measures that will help create local jobs, spur economic growth and support the prosperity of Canadian communities for years to come.

Vancouver Island North will continue to benefit from funding under federal grant programs aimed at improving community infrastructure and services. Over the past year, funds were provided for improvements to rail services, community halls, walking paths, festivals, small craft harbours, improving accessibility for the disabled and programs to keep seniors active.

We saw the successful completion of the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Centre and the Health Science Centre at CFB Comox, all contributing to the creation of jobs in the constituency. Our government will remain focused on the No. 1 priority of Canadians: jobs and economic growth.

The future is bright for the Town of Comox. Key developments in the downtown core are proceeding, with the Comox Harbour Centre (retail/office) at Church/ Beaufort soon to be completed with a 14-unit residential condo building to follow.

A waterfront hotel is back on the table, as it is anticipated that a rezoning/development permit application will be made PAUL IVES shortly.

Construction activity elsewhere has been focused on in-fill projects, with small building lots and ground-oriented townhouse units being built to suit aging in place residents and young families alike.

Affordability and diversity of housing options were key principles embraced in our new Official Community Plan adopted in 2011 so it is reassuring to see implementation occur as local real estate market conditions improve.

On other fronts, Town council and staff continue work with CV Economic Development on a ‘made in Comox’ economic action plan, which will result in establishing goals and objectives to vitalize the downtown core in partnership with the local Business in Action organization. Infrastructure improvements to Marina Park boardwalk and greenways that connect waterfront and downtown to other parts of our community will be considered as funding opportunities with Island Coastal Economic Trust and Community Infrastructure Funds allow.

The City of Courtenay and the rest of the Comox Valley have demonstrated resilience during challenging fiscal times. Last year, new commercial and residential developments, including the new Thrifty Foods in East Courtenay, Walmart expansion, and Piercy Creek Estates housing complex, showed confidence in our community’s economic LARRY JANGULA health.

The construction of the new hospital, scheduled to open in 2017, is going to add thousands of jobs and millions of dollars to our local economy.

Courtenay City council is looking for ways to ensure the many small businesses in our community are given the best chance at a prosperous future. One idea is to have lower tax rates for small businesses; right now, we’re prevented from doing this due to provincial rules. We’re also working closely with the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association on a variety of initiatives, such as downtown beautification and support for special events.

A strong local economy through a wide variety of businesses and sectors is good for our residents, and we’re going to do our best to ensure the City of Courtenay continues to thrive in the years ahead.

As we look ahead to a new year of economic opportunities and challenges, we’re off to a good start in the Comox Valley, where a worldleading snowpack and exposure from the 2010 Games has resulted in a 20-per-cent increase in visitors to Mount Washington.

Value-added agriculture is also drawing people to the area to sample artisan cheeses, wines and the offerings DON McRAE of the new Shelter Point Distillery.

This economic activity is essential to pay for the health care, education, and social services the public wants government to supply.

More tourists require more tourism workers, and those working people pay taxes. Those taxes support those services we enjoy.

But those programs are still costly — with that pressure compounded by the worst recession we’ve seen in years. However, there’s a reason B.C. entered that recession in a strong economic place, and is emerging stronger than most provinces — our government’s record of good fiscal management.

Our export industry has seen major increases recorded in forestry, industrial goods and energy products. The retail sector is showing strong growth. And our government’s corporate and small business tax cuts stimulate companies to grow and create jobs. We also believe the harmonized sales tax is the best move for the longterm.

Comox Valley signage committee After studies showed a shortage of signage promoting the Comox Valley, a committee was set up to work on establishing more signs.

Four new service attractions signs on Highway 19 was one of the committee’s endeavours — two have been installed on the northbound side of the south entrance to the Valley and two more are set to be installed on the southbound side of the same area.

The committee also worked to add the Comox Valley on two Ministry of Highway distance signs on the highway in the Nanaimo

region.

“Future initiatives will be additional directional and on-site signage for the VIVC, and determination of public-private partnership to proceed with new regional gateway signage,” adds Greasley.

Additional Hotel Room Tax The Additional Hotel Room Tax (AHRT) — an extra tax on hotel rooms to fund marketing initiatives designed to drive overnight stays — was secured in 2012.

According to Greasley, over 45 regions, some of which are on Vancouver Island, have implemented the tax, and major accommodation providers in the Comox Valley requested it.

As of April 1, a two-percent tax will be added to all bills on overnight accommodation providers in Courtenay with four or more rooms.

Greasley expects the tax to generate about $150,000 during the first year.

CVEDS initiated a comprehensive multi-year destination marketing program

Mayor Larry Jangula of Courtenay got together with local hotel representatives to announce a hotel room tax to fund marketing initiatives designed to drive overnight stays. which includes initiatives like, marketing the Comox Valley through Lower Mainland TV marketing campaigns, online campaigns, brand enhancement, encouraging new and enhanced festivals.

Goals of the tax are to increase room revenue on a year-round basis, to increase the length of stay and to increase repeat visitation.

To ensure the tax is working, monthly and annual

accommodation revenues will be monitored, as will airport traffic, the number of visitors to key attractions and the number of visitors to the VIVC. Comox Valley Economic Development Strategic Plan According to Greasley, the five-year strategic plan (2013-2017) is at the internal draft stage right now, and will be implemented with participation from the region’s municipalities.

“The plan is the result of an intensive period of community consultation, research and analysis through the fall of 2012,” says Greasley, adding over 145 responses to a Regional Economic Business Input Survey came in from business owners and senior managers “It reflects the community’s interests, combined with strategic analysis of regional assets and competitive advantages, in order

From 2011 to 2012, the assessed value of single family houses in Courtenay increased from $318,500 in $319,000, and condominiums dropped from $123,600 to $122,300. In Comox, house values dropped from $336,800 to $330,000 and condos decreased from $251,200 to $246,700.

New library will follow heritage design guidelines Scott Stanfield Record Staff Cumberland will soon have a new library fronting onto Dunsmuir Avenue in the heart of the village.

Last year, the Vancouver Island Regional Library board of trustees approved construction of the new library, which will be located across the street from the old library near Village Square.

“It’s exciting. I’m thrilled to bits,” said Coun. Kate Greening, a VIRL board member. “I’ve been working on it for quite a while, myself.”

Parking will be available at the front and rear of the building, which will follow heritage design guidelines of the Village.

The two-storey building will contain clerestory windows (in rooms with raised ceilings) on both sides. The second floor will contain residential units.

A First Nations design of a fish will adorn the exterior of the building near the entrance.

The library will be more than 2,750 square feet, about three times larger than the current branch that is undersized and overdue

The wheelchair-accessible facility will be air conditioned — “which will be a real treat in the summertime,” Greening notes — and contain sufficient space for

The contractor is Rideout Construction, a Cumberland company.

Store on Target for opening date in Courtenay Record Staff Target Corporation expects to open a new store at the former Zellers location at Courtenay’s Driftwood Mall this summer.

The company invested upwards of $10 million to remodel the facility, which will sell general housewares, electronics, apparel, infant and baby, toys, health and beauty products, among other items.

“We truly want to bring the Target culture and experience to Canadian shoppers,” company spokesperson Lisa Gibson said in an interview with The Record.

After considering a variety of locations and sites, Gibson said the company determined factors such as demographics and marketplace competition made the Comox Valley an ideal spot for the store, which will join Quality Foods as the mall’s other anchor store.

The Driftwood Target store — signified by the iconic red and white bull’s-eye — will not expand in size. It could employ upwards of 200 people. Former Courtenay Home Depot manager Pat McKenna is the manager, or store

team leader.

Zellers employees will not be automatically transferred to new positions at Target.

“Because of the company transfer, (the employees) would have to reapply for jobs,” Gibson said.

In addition to Driftwood Mall, Zellers stores on the Island slated to convert to Target include Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre in Campbell River, Nanaimo North Town Centre and Tillicum Mall in Victoria.

Target had announced it would open 125 to 135 stores in Canada, most of which will open this year.

The Minneapolis-based company operates 1,767 stores across the U.S. Competing against other discount retail giants, Target operates in nearly every U.S. state offering ‘trend-forward’ merchandise at low cost, as opposed to the traditional concept of focusing on low-priced goods.

Each Target store in Canada will employ approximately 150 to 200 team members.

In 2011, Target announced the opening of its Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, Ont.

Comox Valley Airport expects ‘positive growth’ Passenger numbers are not the only things soaring sky-high at the Comox Valley Airport (YQQ), as the coming year holds exciting opportunities for the growing facility.

Record Staff “It’s been a couple of really good years,” said CEO Fred Bigelow. “We look forward to positive growth.”

In January, YQQ announced it served more than 327,000 passengers in 2012 — the highest in its history.

The data represents a sixper-cent increase from 2011 and surpasses the airport’s previous record of 310,450 passenger in 2007.

The Comox Valley Airport’s strategic plan estimates that YQQ’s passenger numbers will continue to grow, reaching as high as 344,125 by 2015.

Although Bigelow cautioned it would unrealistic to expect the high rate of growth year over year, he did note the numbers send a positive message to future growth, particularly to securing flights to sunspot

destinations.

“The demand is there; people want to fly direct,” he explained, and noted currently WestJet provides seasonal service to Puerto Vallarta, as Air Transat did not return to provide service this year.

“We’ve got a great business case, and there’s definitely a demand.”

In addition to seeking out a second carrier for vacation destinations, Bigelow noted the airport is looking at the possibility of a direct flight to an American hub — particularly Seattle — that could also be on the radar.

“It opens up a number of options for those who want to access connecting flights,” he said, but warned there is still a lot of work to ensure profitability and viability.

“We definitely want to serve the needs of our passengers.”

Things look up for alpine resort Earle Couper Record Staff Mount Washington Alpine Resort’s vision is straightforward and focused: “To be the destination of choice for people seeking extraordinary coastal mountain experiences.”

They’ve been doing just that since 1979, and this year is no exception. While their snowpack has varied from 500 cm (the deepest in Canada) to the current 380 cm, their commitment to provide “a great alpine experience in a safe, natural environment unique to our Island” never has.

This winter season has been steady in terms of visitor numbers, and resort president Peter Gibson puts it into perspective thusly: “The results since we’ve opened I give a B grade – not record days, but it’s been good. We’re struggling in an Island economy that’s a C grade. But conditions (for the most part) have been A grade.”

Gibson noted an early February thaw-and-freeze

cycle where the snow was soft during the day then froze over at night. “Anything off the groomed (areas) was tough to ski, but we had a good dusting of snow (on Super Bowl Sunday). There’s lots of snow on the horizon so we’ll be back into winter pretty quick.”

Gibson, who has been involved with the resort in a hands-on way for 36 years (in the spring of 1977, the Courtenay native was onsite, chainsaw in hand, helping clear the terrain) notes, “You only ski the top centimetre or so. We’re in good shape. Whether it’s 200, 300 or 500 cm it doesn’t matter.”

The resort hosts many events on a year-round basis and welcomed a new one this year. On B.C. Family Day (Feb. 11, B.C’s new statutory holiday) ski resorts across the province offered 50 per cent off alpine and Nordic lift tickets.

Gibson said judging by an early rush on accommodation reservations, the offer was going to be popular at Mount Washington.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort is a privately owned resort community, open year round. First opened in 1979, Mount Washington started as two double chairlifts and a rough road.

Distillery eager to produce first batch of whisky Earle Couper Record staff

The waiting is the hardest part.

Tom Petty sang that back in 1981.

Patrick Evans and James Marinus are living it today.

As owner (Evans) and operations manager (Marinus) of Shelter Point Distillery, the duo still has over a year’s wait before they can produce their first bottle of single malt scotch at their distillery between the Comox Valley and Campbell River.

“The earliest it can come out is June of 2014. It has to be in a cask for three years to legally be called a whisky in Canada. We’re 18 months in,” Marinus said, adding that same requirement applies in Scotland, home of the “water of life.”

Marinus notes there is a chance their scotch might not be ready for consumption next summer. “We’ll reserve the right to say ‘Let’s hold on to that another year.’ I’m thinking we’re not going to have to, and we’re not going to want to. But we just don’t want to put a product out that’s not good.”

And even if the scotch is good to go, Marinus notes decisions will have to be made as to how much of the three-yearold do they sell and how much do they keep for their 10-year and 12-year and 20-year bottlings.

“I suspect Year 10 will be one of our better years. Once we have a 10-year product out there we’ll be in full swing.”

its age, but he thinks the novelty of a Canadian single malt will entice people to try it. He notes the only other single malt scotch distillery in Canada is in Cape Breton.

Marinus said their scotch will be sold at their distillery at first, then go out through the Liquor Distribution Branch. The goal is to go across Canada then overseas, where lower taxes makes for a more profitable market.

Scotch drinkers are a discerning demographic, and Marinus says he will make the Shelter Point whisky in the same fashion as they do in Scotland.

Evans and Marinus imported two copper pot stills from Scotland and a master distiller from Scotland trained Marinus.

“I want to be like the Scots as much as I possibly can but still be Canadian.

We’re Canadian, we can be a little different, but I want to respect the traditions.”

Shelter Point got its start after two men who were looking for investors to build a distillery approached Evans and Marinus. After many years of dairy farming on the Evans’ family farm,

they decided to go for it. The dairy farm property proved a natural location.

Marinus notes an aquifer under the property provides an abundance of clear water, they are growing their own grain and long-term will be looking to add a malting facility which will allow them to produce their single malt “from field to flask” a rarity even in Scotland, Marinus said.

As for the waiting, Marinus said the initial investors are not involved in the distillery. “Just Patrick and I. The financial overhead and long-term wait for money is a lot to take on. But it’s not much different from farming – which is all long-term. So we weren’t as scared of it as a traditional businessman would be.”

Aside from the stills from Scotland and a boiler from Ontario, almost everything else at the distillery is as locally sourced as possible. All the stainless equipment comes from Abbotsford, and the distillery itself is built of wood from the Evans’ property which Evans and Marinus milled themselves.

The other big question people ask is: “What is Shelter Point single malt going to taste like?”

“It’s really hard to say,” Marinus said. “I tell them it’s going to taste like nothing they’ve ever had before. Something unique to Canada for sure.”

And something Comox Valley scotch lovers will be very much looking forward to come the summer of 2014.

“There’s the base building parts that pretty much done for the CIBC and Starbucks so now they’ve just got to do the interior work,” says Crown Isle Thrifty Foods store manager Jeff Ackinclose, adding the work is on schedule. “I don’t have exact dates but I would say they’ll be open within a few months.”

Besides CIBC and Starbucks, work is also coming along on a First Choice Haircutters salon and a new medical clinic with five doctors and a dietician, called The Crown Isle Clinic.

Meanwhile, Thrifty Foods, Cascadia Liquor Store, Vancouver Island InsuranceCentres, Domo Japan and TD Waterhouse have been open for a number of months.

shopping centre, and he’s looking forward to welcoming more businesses to the area.

According to Erin Kelly, communications manager for Thrifty Foods, project realtors are working on leasing the available space, as well as pre-leasing space for the second phase of the project.

Although she doesn’t have details she can release on when the second phase will begin or which companies are thinking about coming

on board, she says “things are in the works.”

Ackinclose adds he expects leasing at the shopping centre will move quickly, especially once spring starts to arrive.

“As soon as the (good) weather comes and the Snowbirds come back home from this area — a lot of people (are) in Phoenix and Arizona — I think it’ll start to catch fire,” he says, noting the business area is in demand. writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com

College growing in every aspect Whether looking at international student numbers, new ways of delivering programs or collaborations with industry partners, North Island College continues to grow in all areas.

Record Staff NIC’s International Education has grown “significantly” over the past year, according to Susan Auchterlonie, director of college and community relations.

Enrolment numbers have increased by 30 per cent.

About 150 students from 28 different countries will come through NIC during this academic year, and the college expects that number to rise to 175 next year.

“The coming year will see International Education investing in student scholarships to encourage domestic students to study abroad and international students to study at NIC,” adds Auchterlonie. “Funding will also be in place to assist faculty interested in pursuing international experiences.”

She also notes NIC introduced a post-degree diploma program in global business management, which has attracted students from Canada and abroad.

English-as-a-secondlanguage programming is now offered year-round, making the program more accessible to international and domestic students, adds Auchterlonie.

Meanwhile, the college continues to develop its Remote Web-based Science Laboratory (RWSL) at NIC’s Comox Valley campus.

It was awarded $557,000 in November from the U.S.-based Consortium for Healthcare Online, which will support expanding the use of the RWSL technology beyond science education to the field of healthcare, says Auchterlonie.

The funding will enable NIC to work with Pueblo Community College in Colorado to facilitate delivery of remote labs to Kodiak College in Alaska and to develop new Allied Health experiments.

Infrastructure work, air show ahead for 19 Wing The coming months are busy ones for 19 Wing Comox, as the Canadian Air Force base completes a variety of infrastructure projects, as well prepares for the return of the first air show in eight years.

Erin Haluschak Record Staff Capt. Trevor Reid, 19 Wing public affairs officer, said within the next few weeks, new aircraft arrestor gear will be in place, replacing an older system.

“The system is designed to safely stop tail-hooked equipped airplanes,” he explained. “There is a crossrunway cable which is raised off the ground when an aircraft drops a hook to catch the line.”

Reid said the system, which is on the west end of the runway, cost around $2.7 million.

Another system that is replacing an older one is the installation of the APALS — Aerodrome Precision Approach and Landing System.

Reid said it is a new instrument landing system that utilizes radio signals to provide guidance for landing, and allows for more accurate

landings.

In addition to aircraftrelated infrastructure, Reid noted the fire bay extension is about 60 per cent complete, and will aid in accommodating new fire trucks for the base.

“The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of March, and will help maintain our airfield response,” he said.

In addition to projects taking place on the base, Reid explained some of the residential housing units at Glacier Gardens will be upgraded “to meet the needs of modern homes.”

He added heating, electrical and drywall and vinyl siding will be replaced or redone.

A $557,000 dredging project will soon be complete at HMCS Quadra as well, said Reid.

“The intent is to remove sediment from the docks, pilings and floats — which

The dredging project began in December and is scheduled to be completed this month.

Finally, a 24-room, temporary accommodation building with one common area is on course to be com-

pleted mid-March at a cost of $736,000. Reid explained the new building, which replaced older units, will be used for temporary residence for members who attend 19 Wing on course.

In addition to infrastructure projects, Reid said the Snowbirds are scheduled to return to the Comox Valley for their annual training

in mid-April for a couple of weeks.

He also noted “plans are well underway” for the return of the first air show since 2005, scheduled for Aug. 17 at 19 Wing.

The show is set to coincide with Armed Forces Day, marking 70 years of Air Force history in Comox.

Reid explained the orga-

nizing teamis still gathering performers and visiting aircrafts, “but the public should expect a wide range of across the Canadian Forces, along with ground demos from the Navy and Army.”

Chamber of Commerce ‘taking care of business’ It has been almost a year since the Information Centre sign was removed from the Chamber of Commerce building on Cliffe Avenue in Courtenay, and visitor services subsequently moved to the new Vancouver Island Visitor Centre.

In the months since, Chamber management and staff have been working diligently to educate both businesses and the public about the role that a Chamber of Commerce plays in the community.

“While there was a period of adjustment, I am proud to say that the Chamber of Commerce continues to be the voice for local businesses, as we have been since 1919,” says Dianne Hawkins, Chamber president and CEO. “We have installed new signage on the exterior of our building. We have renovated our offices and reception area to be more business — rather than visitor — focused. And we have adopted a new motto: Taking care of business.

“While we still provide local visitor information and brochure racking privileges for our members, and we welcome local people or

visitors to come to us for information, we have now turned our focus to delivering business networking and educational programs, building a strong membership, and working to fulfill our role as advocates for the business community. We are moving forward with a positive attitude of collaboration, innovation and commitment to our members and the community.”

In addition to continuing with its many longstanding programs, such as the Annual Community Awards, summer barbeque and business mixers, the Chamber launched some new initiatives in 2012.

It held its inaugural Top 40 Under 40 Awards and produced a shop local YouTube Video — Rappin’ Up a Comox Valley Christmas.

In an ongoing effort to provide quality membership services and foster community involvement, the Chamber also established a Bursary Endowment Fund at North Island College. And

it is working closely with the Cumberland, Courtenay and Comox downtown associations in an effort to promote local shopping, as well as working in collaboration with other Chambers on Vancouver Island.

Comox Valley has become a real culinary hotspot The Comox Valley is in the midst of a mini culinary boom.

With one of Canada’s only whisky distilleries, a handful of award-winning wineries, and a continually expanding variety of restaurants and cafes showcasing locally produced, raised and harvested ingredients, the food and beverage sector is showing some pluck, perseverance and creativity in challenging economic times.

Population growth and an increasingly sophisticated culinary palate is driving the boom.

At close to seven per cent annual population growth, the Comox Valley is the fifth-fastest growing area out of the province’s 29 regional districts. There is close to $1 billion in proposed and planned commercial and residential development, and in 2011 YQQ welcomed 308,937 passengers, marking 4.2 per cent year-to-year growth, well above the annual passenger growth experienced by most other airports in North America.

“Strong population growth usually indicates two things,” says Jamie Vann Struth, of Vann Struth Consulting Group, a Vancouver firm specializing in economic research and analysis and who is consulting on the update of the Comox Valley Economic Development Strategic Plan. “First there is economic strength that provides jobs for workingage people with families, and second there is a high quality of life that attracts and retains retirees and other lifestyle-oriented residents.”

Economic diversification has helped to shelter the Comox Valley from the boom and bust cycles of typical resource-dependent communities.

Judging by recent investment in the food and beverage sector, visitors and locals alike place a high premium on wining and dining. For the first time since purchasing the Blackfin Pub in 2005, co-owners Lisa and Edd Moyes closed in November and early December to carry out more than $100,000 in renovations and upgrades, including the installation of a new-energy efficient refrigeration system, fireplace, sound system and flooring.

“We’ve experienced continuous growth since 2005 but you have to be responsive to your customer base,” Edd Moyes says. “I think this is a really exciting time.

The valley is facing a great opportunity to showcase local cuisine.”

Moyes says the recent approval of a two-per-cent Additional Hotel Room Tax (AHRT) is long overdue and will greatly enhance the Comox Valley’s ability to market its ocean to mountain lifestyle, and the quality of local dining and accommodation options.

Kathy Jerritt, owner of Tria Fine Catering and Gourmet Eats, is another entrepreneur who has invested substantially in the Comox Valley food scene.

She has built a reputation for fine food and wine pairing events, in particular with her themed Full Moon Feasts, as well as her gourmet omelets and crepes at the Comox Valley Farmers Market, and takeout specialties. Last spring she purchased the well-established Country Catering, and now says she can barely keep up with the demand.

“For a chef, this is the best place to be. We have local beef, pheasant, emu and bison, you name it,” Jerritt says. “With respect to produce, everything is here.

I’ve had seasonal watermelon and cantaloupe from Pattison Farms that’s as tasty as anything I’ve experienced.

In 2012 local businessman Kory Wagstaff celebrated the opening of his Prime Chophouse and Wine Bar, with a wine list in the 70s and four distinct dining experiences in one building — a lounge, restaurant, private and semi-private conference room. Domo Sushi is another recent arrival to the local dining scene.

Food processing businesses are also expanding.

Pressing Matters is a new apple pressing enterprise launched this year by Marla Limousin and George Ehrler, owners of Natures Way Farm and Blue Moon Winery. Tree Island Gourmet Yogurt is bringing locally cultured yogurt to Comox Valley markets and grocers.

Locally grown fresh produce and seafood often showcased in local cuisine. and distillers. Shelter Point Distillery, Coastal Black Estate Winery, and Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery are just a few of the players that have placed the Comox Valley on the radar of discerning gourmands and connoisseurs.

What’s even more significant is the continued reinvestment in businesses being made by longtime Comox Valley restaurateurs and entrepreneurs.

Several years ago, Trent McIntyre and Sandra Viney leveraged the long-running success of their flagship Atlas Café into their second eatery Avenue Bistro, now thriving on Comox Avenue.

Hot Chocolates, which expanded its business to include Cake Bread Artisan Bakery, and Toscanos Trattoria, which recently underwent interior renovations, are two other culinary mainstays that are continually improving and diversifying their businesses.

The food business is challenging but these Comox Valley entrepreneurs reinvest because they know they’re sitting on a good thing.

“When I have customers from Alberta and Saskatchewan sitting on the deck for lunch, they can’t get enough of the ocean views and fishing boats,” says Edd Moyes.
