As we age many of us find ourselves caring for an elderly family member or friend. As Rosalyn Carter stated “There are only four kinds of people in the world – those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.�

Katherine Willett, the gerontologist who coordinates the Burnaby Family Caregivers Project for Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services Society (BSOSS) notes that to practice healthy aging while playing the role of caregiving, means tapping into available services, practicing self care, and thinking and planning ahead so that you aren’t caught in a crisis. “These are three key points we stress with family and friend unpaid caregivers,� says Willett.

How to stay connected Lots of ways to get involved, for health and happiness

The Golden Years can also be the lonely years.

Loved ones and friends may have passed away.

Children and grandchildren may have settled in other communities.

But maintaining connections with other people, and with community, is a vital part of living, not just existing.

“We see it as a growing concern,” says Stephen D’Souza, the executive director of Burnaby’s Meals on Wheels program,

which delivers meals to seniors who are isolated because of health or mobility issues.

“We see generations of kids who are being squeezed by their own issues or the medical issues of elderly parents. We see new immigrants who are often brought in as caregivers but who haven’t developed their own social network.”

Fortunately Burnaby and New Westminster seniors are blessed with a wealth of resources that can keep them in touch with the

world outside their doors.

A good start is the Burnaby Senior Citizens’ Resource Guide, an annual publication of the city’s Citizen Support Services.

Within its almost 100 pages is a comprehensive assembly of information and phone numbers for resources and programs for seniors, from community food programs to financial help for veterans to home services like gardening and repairs to tax information to volunteer organizations that might of interest to seniors.

The guide also includes contact information for local, provincial and federal politicians.

The free guide is available at city hall, or by calling 604-294-7980.

Burnaby’s Citizen Support Services also offers the Gadabouts and Wheelers program for housebound seniors to take day trips around Metro Vancouver that include transportation.

South Burnaby Neighbourhood House runs a seniors outreach program which offers home visits from an outreach worker.

The program also trains seniors to become outreach ambassadors to other seniors to help connect them to programs and services in the community.

The Seniors Together Program connects seniors from all kinds of culturally diverse backgrounds for friendship, food and activities like conversational ESL, games and dancing. The program runs Wednesdays and Fridays and transportation can be arranged by calling Joan Thomsen at 604-431-0400.

Internet-savvy seniors can connect with others who share their interests by exploring meetup groups. There are local meetups for seniors interested in public speaking, digital photography, financial planning for retirement, yoga and travel.

Seniors who are still mystified by computers

and the Internet can get a gentle introduction in courses offered by the Community Centred College for the Retired.

The college, located in the Alan Emmott Centre at 6650 Southoaks Cr., also offers courses in art, languages, music and genealogy, as well as social activities like bridge, chess, scrapbooking, knitting and quilting.

In New Westminster, where more than 12 per cent of the population is over 65 years of age, the city has been proactive in ensuring seniors aren’t isolated. With financial support from the Union of BC Municipalities, the city developed a seniors engagement toolkit for staff and community organizations to ensure programs and services are responsive to the needs of seniors.

The city’s Senior Services Society has also created a database with information on more than 400 programs and services available to seniors in New Westminster.

Century House, located in Moody Park, is a central meeting place for seniors with all kinds of interests, talents and abilities, from fitness to painting to snooker to singing to day outings at local attractions. There are also confidential counseling programs as well as peer counseling in which trained senior volunteers provide one-on-one support. Seniors Link Up is a program run by Fraserside Community Services Society that connects trained volunteers with isolated seniors for a kind ear, a game of cards or a day outing. For more information, contact Kelly at 604-524-0516.

Paul McDonell, a Burnaby city councillor, has been instrumental in the revitalization ongoing in Edmonds.

Paul McDonell: Edmonds builder When Paul McDonell stopped saving buildings from fires in 1999, he set out to save a neighbourhood.

Though he retired from the Vancouver Fire Department, McDonell kept contributing in his home town of Burnaby. He served six years on the parks board, as well as the health board. He volunteered his time to organizations like the Lions Club. He was elected to city council.

But he’s left his most indelible mark in Burnaby’s Edmonds neighbourhood.

Home to a diverse cultural mix of immigrants and refugees who live in the area’s many walk-up apartment blocks, Edmonds was also plagued by street prostitution, crime, graffiti and buildings and lots in disrepair.

In 2005, McDonell launched a mural program that commissioned local artists like Todd Polich to create giant paintings on graffiti-plagued walls.

The murals not only sent the taggers elsewhere, they also helped define the neighbourhood with imagery that evoked its multicultural population and historical origins.

To bring the community together, McDonell was also instrumental in the organization of an urban fall fair, a show and shine and a Santa Claus parade.

“They’ve identified Edmonds as a community again,” said McDonell of the events. “There was no core here, it was just a name.”

Two years ago the neighbourhood got a spanking new library and this spring it will be joined by an expansive community centre.

Developers are taking notice. The old Middlegate Mall is now Highgate, a modern mix of commercial stores like Save-On Foods, offices and four condo towers. New townhome projects are being built along Kingsway, east of Edmonds, and the Value Village property has been sold for redevelopment.

“It’s an emerging neighbourhood,” said McDonell.

His efforts haven’t gone unrecognized. In 2008 he was presented a BC Community Achievement Award and last year he was named a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Helping to care is a wonderful way to express love and to give back.

The work caregivers do is a gift – to the people being cared for, and to our communities. While caregivers honour their care recipient, they are also under stress, given the numerous tasks they face. All these tasks can affect physical, financial, mental and emotional health.

The stress and losses (the things caregivers have to give up) add up and can create caregiver stress. If you can no longer cope with the tasks of caregiving, your care recipient/s also suffer.

This brings us to our second key point - practice self care. Recall the airline rule: put on your oxygen mask before helping another.

Translated to family caregivers, that means. eat well,

exercise, socialize, get enough sleep, and practice stress management.

PROTECT YOUR HEALTH is a core message of the National Family Caregivers Association. You don’t have to sacrifice your life for your care recipient, and can find balance between your needs and the needs of your care recipient. You can love yourself as much as you love your frail family member.

The third key point of the Burnaby Family Caregivers Project - don’t wait for a crisis - think and plan ahead... is important because decisions made during a crisis cannot be as well thought out as those made during a non-emergency time, and the resources you might want to access during a crisis may not be available on demand. A great many programs and services have long wait lists.

Our Senior Peer Counsellors service offers free confidential peer counselling to seniors facing stress, anxiety, loneliness and other life challenges. Just having someone to talk with can make a world of difference.

Social media no longer just child’s play The Internet and related technologies have been a game-changer for people of all ages.

The instant connectivity made possible by these advancements has been valued by young adults and children for years. But now social media is attracting an entirely different demographic -- seniors.

More than just a method of channeling information to the comfort of home, the Internet and the various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, are ways for older adults to stay connected with friends and family.

For seniors faced with mobility issues, social media helps to bring the world to them. Despite the stereotype that seniors do not want to learn to use new technology, many seniors are getting on board.

Findings from the Pew Research Institute show that social networking use among Internet users ages 50 to 64 grew by 88 percent between April 2009 and May 2010. The research also found that the percentage of those 65 and older using social media grew from 13 percent to 26 percent during that same stretch.

Getting more closely connected with family who live far away is just one beneft of getting on social media.

Mona Forsyth: driving force at New West food bank

Forsyth also believes age isn’t a barrier to playing an active role in the community. She was the honourary co-chair, with Vancouver Canucks public address announcer John Ashbridge, of the Eldercare Foundation’s inaugural Embrace Aging Month, an

annual series for workshops and seminars geared to seniors and caregivers.

In 2010, Forsyth’s contributions were recognized by the City of New Westminster when she was named Citizen of the Year, and in January she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Mona Forsyth has a lot of track suits and shorts in her wardrobe. But the 88-year-old isn’t training for a marathon.

Though considering all the running around she does for the New Westminster food bank, she could probably finish one.

Forsyth’s been running the food bank, located at Shiloh-Sixth Avenue United Church, for 12 years.

Literally.

In the days leading up to the facility’s weekly openings she scurries to local grocery stores and bakeries to collect donated food, pushing the carts herself, piling the bags into the trunk of her car. She coordinates the volunteers, she answers the phone. Once the doors are open, she scoots between the tables, ensuring the distribution of canned and baked goods, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables donated by local gardeners, is running smoothly.

The need is never-ending.

The New West food bank serves about 500 clients a week, and depends upon 30 or so volunteers.

The organization’s broad range of non-medical services support seniors to live independently.

Herb Hamm: The Westies’ historian

At an age when many seniors are trying to remember, Herb Hamm is ensuring nobody forgets the soldiers and peacekeepers who’ve served for the Royal Westminster Regiment.

With the “Westies,” as the regiment is lovingly nicknamed, celebrating their 150th anniversary this year, that’s a lot of history.

Hamm, 82, is the keeper of the regiment’s museum and archives, tucked in the old gun room in a corner of the historic armoury on Queen’s Avenue.

Surrounded by artifacts like the Victoria Cross awards earned by two Westies, uniforms and weapons, the knickknacks of the soldiers’ daily lives and documents listing the 898 members of the regiment killed in the First World War and the 170 who didn’t return from WWII, Hamm is the go-to source for information about the regiment.

“They never failed to make an objective, and once they won that objective, they never failed to hold it,” said Hamm, who was also the regiment’s

In fact, it was during his first tenure as commanding officer when the regimental museum was created. It now has more than 10,000 artifacts. A prize piece, a bren gun armored personnel carrier, was recently acquired by the Royal Westminster Regiment Historical Society, and is currently

being restored before it’s permanently displayed on a concrete pad outside the barracks beside the armoury.

Hamm’s encyclopedic knowledge of the regiment was invaluable to the creation of a lavishly-illustrated and detailed account of its history, authored by another Westie, Sgt. Robert Harley. For King and Country: 150 years

Although young adults continue to be the primary users of social media, older users are gaining momentum and surpassing youth in the number of new users.

Individuals who are not yet utilizing social media to manage their communication efforts may be inspired by these benefits to doing so.

• Photo and video sharing: The majority of photos being taken today are digital, as fewer people are making prints of their photos.

Rather, they are being shared via e-mail or through social media sites. Grandparents can see their grandchildren in photos in real time. Also, if they’ve managed apps that enable video sharing, they can view and chat with relatives who live miles away, as if they were sitting across the table.

• Conversations with family: In a world where families are no longer centrally located, communication may be lacking. Despite the prevalence of mobile phones, fewer and fewer people seem to pick up the phone and make calls as they once did. Instead, they’re texting and updating social media posts. They’re also e-mailing one another.

Older adults who have no access to this technology could be left out of the mix.

This is a way for seniors to stay close to family.

• Convenient check-ins: At times when a full-blown conversation may not be practical, having a quick method to check in with a loved one can make social media advantageous. Men and women can send a quick text to their parents to find out how they’re feeling or if they need any-

thing. Such ready access can provide some peace of mind to adults concerned about their elderly parents.

• Online shopping: Seniors who don’t get out much or who cannot safely drive a vehicle might not be able to shop as often as they would like. Having Internet access and experience with browsing Web sites enables older men and women to shop from reputable Web sites who ship items directly to the house.

With the vast array of items now sold online, anyone can have their choice of items and not be forced to settle because of their age.

• Improved feelings of wellbeing: Avoiding feelings of isolation and loneliness can benefit older men and women.

A study by Dr. Shelia Cotten, a sociologist and associate professor from the University

of Alabama, Birmingham, revealed that Internet use was associated with a 30 percent decrease in depressive symptoms among older adults who used it regularly, while other studies have shown similarly impressive results.

• Working the mind: Going online, chatting on social media or simply writing an e-mail works areas of the brain. Typing also helps improve manual dexterity.

These factors can be beneficial for seniors looking to stay sharp.

Using the Internet as a form of communication is a growing trend among the 50-plus demographic. It enables them to stay connected with family and the world in a variety of ways.

Although some seniors dread the conversation about leaving home and moving to a retirement community, there are many advantages, including improved safety, transportation and the chance to make new friends.

When’s the right time to leave ‘home’?

Few people like to admit their age is affecting them.

However, as we age, certain abilities become compromised, and it may no longer be practical for aging men and women to remain in their homes, or at least live there alone.

Comfortable living alone may be a signal to an older adult that he or she still has independence.

Taking away a license or suggesting a move may cause feelings of animosity.

But at some point in time, friends or family members of an aging man or woman might need to broach the topic of moving to an assisted living facility.

Such a discussion can be difficult, but having some evidence that a change is necessary may make the news easier to process.

Sometimes the older adult may have already made the decision that a move is necessary, which will make the process even easier.

Moving should never be a knee-jerk reaction unless there is a sudden medical emergency that necessitates fast action.

Under normal circumstances, moving should be a gradual process that begins even before a parent, grandparent or other relative really needs to change residences.

Here are some steps to keep in mind: • Make sure to develop a strong relationship with your loved one.

This relationship should be consistent and keep you in frequent contact so you can best assess his or her living situation.

• Talk things over with other siblings or relatives to see if others feel the same way you do.

Perhaps they have a different point of view.

• If there are problems at home, make your case by pointing them out. Show the elder adult how day-to-day life has grown more difficult and how certain burdens may be lifted by changing living situations.

• Indicate that access to health care and a safe environment are some of the key benefits of moving to a senior community. Point out other benefits, such as companionship with similarly aged people, activities, transportation, and the presence of a maintenance staff to ensure nothing falls into disrepair.

• Do your research and have the names and amenities of different residences available to discuss.

Request brochures from senior communities and offer to make trips to view the homes together with your senior relative.

• If the idea of a “home” is not what your loved one has in mind, discuss the options of moving in with a relative and if this would be a more comfortable situation.

• You may need a mediator or help with finding the right fit for a loved one. Consider hiring a geriatric care manager to help you organize your thoughts and priorities regarding a senior living transition. These individuals provide services that include helping families locate appropriate housing and care services for their loved ones.

Not every senior needs to leave home, but the topic should be broached if assistance with dayto-day activities is needed.
