Simpson intros legislation to move future election day

Bob Simpson, Independent MLA for Cariboo North, introduced legislation recently to move future fixed election dates to the fall after the May election, beginning in 2017.

“British Columbians have rightly lost confidence in pre-election budgets,” said Simpson.

“Pre-election budgets are never debated, never subjected to the scrutiny of opposition members and BC’s Independent Officers and never passed into law.

That needs to change.”

Moving the fixed election date is part of the Independent MLAs’ six-point agenda for democratic reform, released earlier this

month by MLAs Simpson, John van Dongen and Vicki Huntington.

“Spring fixed election dates mean that every four years government ministries and dependent agencies do not get spending authority until halfway through the fiscal year and the Ministry of Finance is forced to prepare multiple budgets,” Simpson said.

“This adds a high and unnecessary degree of uncertainty to the functioning of government every fourth year.”

How Did We Forget How to Feel?

You see we get it, humans are intelligent.

So intelligent, that we have found a way to systematically change the natural evolution of human emotion, to align with our intellectual and materialistic pursuits. The intellectual, materialistic world has no use for feeling. To feel is to slow life down. A fast paced, power based world is hindered by cumbersome feelings and emotion.

So, how did we change the human? Much the same way that some water animals developed legs and learned to live on land - adaptation.

Adaptation occurs when it would be more advantageous to the survival of a species if it were to change to accommodate its’ environment. A physical adaptation of a species takes a long time, say a million years. An intellectual or emotional adaptation, such as suburbanized raccoons, can take no time at all. Similarly, children learn very early to adapt to their environment by modifying behavior to ensure their safety or “survival”, while others learn that certain behaviors favor reward or avoid punishment.

The basis of everything we are is feeling and it is how we navigate through life. For example if we feel rejected it may be an indication that we have done something socially unacceptable.

The problem is that many of the tings we feel rejected for are merely feelings. When I begin to notice that exposing certain feelings tends to elicit negative reactions, I may choose to suppress those feelings and expose different ones that elicit a more pleasant response. This is how we form the habit of suppressing feelings. Sounds simple enough, just feel your feelings, but; you weren’t conscious of suppressing them and forgot that you forgot. When we are removed from our authentic feelings, it will always seem as though something is missing. There will be an unexplainable emptiness because feeling is the very substance of being and the result of this missing part of us is the basis of what we call depression.

As McLeese Lake and area residents celebrated a Winter Fun Day this month, everyone was grateful Mother Nature co-operated by supplying the best possible weather for the event. It was definitely a great time with many activities for the more than 100 people who attended the fun-filled day. Activities included ice fishing, snowmobile runs, hay rides, socializing around the campfires and enjoying a tasty lunch.

by Jackie King, roast beef and beef dip made by Greg Foster, cook your own hot dogs and marshmallows over the camp fire, brownies supplied by Howie Chamberlin, coffee and hot chocolate.

The occasion was sponsored by the McLeese Lake Recreation Society, with several people working hard to make the day a huge success.

A big thank you to the cooks and to Maj Sutherland and Jackie King for serving the guests all day and to Howie Chamberlin, Daniel Jalbert, Greg Foster and Mark Ralph for their help with the ice rink. This event would not have been possible without the generos-

ity of Rob and Jim Swaan for the use of their property and tent.

Rob Chamberlin and Gail Parish did an awesome job running the snow machine runs all day as well.

Finally, a huge thank you goes out to Jeremy Kishkan for bringing his sleigh and horses for the hay ride.

This was one of the biggest hits of the day.

The local community was so supportive, first of all by attending and participating in all the events and secondly by donating $150 and more than 300 pounds of food to the Williams Lake Foodbank.

The society needs your support too. Attend the annual general meeting being held at the McLeese Lake Hall March 20, 7 p.m. In order for the committee to continue sponsoring events such as the Winter Fun Days and the Annual Christmas Supper and Auction, they need your help. It only takes very few hours of your time each month to help with organizing.

Budget planning begins DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter

Quesnel city council started preliminary budget planning at last Monday’s council meeting.

Issues arising included the consolidation of certain surplus accounts into the general capital budget.

Since some surplus accounts are very restricted in their usage, emptying them into the general capital budget would increase its usage and free up the monies to be spent on other projects.

Two surplus accounts tentatively being consolidated are those for a gymnastics facility as well as funds set aside for a dike project.

Finance manager Kari Bolton explained just because these funds may be consolidated into the general capital reserve account does not mean the projects are scrapped.

The dike project surplus account is currently sitting with $444,223 and the gymnastics project surplus account has $207,666.

Liberal candidate Coralee Oakes said she’s concerned the bill will take away the ability for MLA’s to communicate.

“There’s a cost to communicate,” she said.

“It may change the ability to do that.”

NDP candidate Duncan Barnett said the spending of “millions of dollars on partisan ads” by current government is the reason British Columbians are “ready to change government.”

“The legislation that Adrian Dix has introduced would ensure that taxpayer dollars aren’t spent to promote any political party,” he said.

“That’s just plain wrong.

The legislation applies to government advertising, not things like columns that MLAs write to communicate with constituents. It’s an example of the practical approach we’re putting forward and that’s why I would like to be part of an NDP government that can deliver results for the Cariboo.”

After NDP leader Adrian Dix introduced a bill that would end the practice of governments using taxpayer dollars to fund partisan ads, Cariboo North’s candidates are speaking out.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Independent MLA Bob Simpson said.

“But the critical point is if they will implement it if they form government.”

Under the Government Advertising Act, the Auditor General would review all government advertising—television, radio, print, online, indoor and outdoor—against clear criteria designed to protect the public interest against the narrow political interests of the governing party. If the advertising fails to meet the criteria, it would not be allowed to run.

In addition, no non-essential government advertising will be allowed in the four months prior to the fixed election date.

The City of Quesnel invites interested parties to submit tenders for the cultivation of an area of agricultural land comprising 29.5 square hectares for hay cultivation only at the Quesnel Airport.

The term is from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2019 (6 years) with one six-year renewal option.

Successful bidder will: - Cultivate land, harvest crops on an on-going basis; - Remove hay bales from property in a timely manner as required by the City; - Acquire applicable airside operating permits; - Abide by all airport regulations; - If required – participate in the application of bio-fibre that includes plowing and re-seeding leased area.

Sealed tenders marked “QUESNEL AIRPORT AGRICULTURAL LAND TENDER” must be received at the City of Quesnel, 410 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, BC, V2J 7J5 PRIOR TO 2:00 PM LOCAL TIME, TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 2013.

NORTHERN HEALTH

NH successfully recruits 55 new physicians Northern Medical Program a great resource for attracting doctors to the north Northern Health has successfully recruited nearly a dozen Northern Medical Program (NMP) graduates to include in a total of 55 physicians recruited since Jan. 1, 2012 from around the province, country and world.

While most of the students in the NMP are still in residency or their fiveyear specialty training programs, Northern Health has begun to see the program meeting the needs of communities and families of northern B.C. Members of the first graduating class are just completing specialty residency training this year.

In addition to those recruited from the NMP,

Northern Health has also recruited 24 physicians since 2010, all of whom completed their residency in the north but were not from the NMP. Northern Health remains in contact with graduates of the NMP who have not reached the point of selecting a permanent home and expects many of those to establish practices in northern communities in the future.

“Although the Northern Medical Program has been admitting students since 2004, we are only now beginning to see graduates settle in the region and begin to practice,” Northern Health Board Chair, Dr. Charles Jago said.

“As physicians complete their residencies and specialties, and as they take the time to determine where they want to practice permanently, we will begin to see more and more settle in northern B.C.” The NMP is benefitting the north even beyond the training of new physicians.

The program also contributes to the recruitment of physicians from around the world to Prince George and surrounding communities by providing the opportunity to practice and teach.

“Between the NMP and small community practice, physicians get to experience a very broad range of

Taking a page from NDP

T

he BC Liberal government’s plans to boost income taxes on business and high-income earners takes a page out of the NDP opposition’s plans and makes sense.

The NDP plan had called for the corporate tax rate to go to 12 per cent, where it stood in 2008. The B.C. Liberals are boosting the corporate tax rate to 11 per cent on April 1.

The provincial government also will impose a higher personal income tax rate on individuals with incomes of $150,000 or more. Their provincial income taxes will rise 2.1 per cent to a rate of 16.8 per cent, as of Jan. 1, 2014.

Both of these tax increases are necessary at this time, given the financial shackles the province is in. It has been running large deficits, at least partly because of much lower natural gas prices, which have affected government revenues.

The province is claiming it will balance the budget in 2013-14, largely because it plans to sell more than $600 million in surplus property.

The provincial government is also boosting MSP premiums again next year. This is completely unfair to moderate income earners, who do not get the exemption from paying the premiums that goes to low income people.

This budget is crafted with the May 14 election in mind. It is designed to convince wavering voters that the B.C. Liberals are competent money managers. Over the course of the past 12 years, the Liberals have been sound money managers much of the time, but in recent years their record has been more mixed.

The Liberals were hoping for a big boost in revenue through the HST, but that was torpedoed by voters because of the bumbling way the government brought in the tax. That hurt their reputation as competent managers.

By adopting part of the NDP platform, the Liberals may have unintentionally telegraphed that the NDP too has good fiscal ideas.

The Don Cherry of TV science H

e has a white beard and a bully pulpit on CBC television, but he doesn’t use it to promote hockey fighting.

Instead he sucker punches the oil and gas industry at every opportunity, with increasingly flagrant disregard for the rules of science. Public broadcasting referees keep their whistles in their pockets, wary of offending a legend.

He’s David Suzuki and he has evolved from geneticist to TV celebrity to his current role as the Don Cherry of Canadian science, an angry curmudgeon lashing out at his enemies.

Earlier, I wrote about Suzuki’s hit piece on the Alberta oil sands, featuring selective pollution studies and a celebrity turn by movie director James Cameron, who toured the alleged carbon crime scene in his personal jet helicopter.

Suzuki’s latest scud missile of misinformation was launched Feb. 7 on The Nature of Things. It’s called Shattered Ground and it borrows heavily from earlier shock docs that target hydraulic fracturing for shale oil and gas.

B.C. Views surging shale gas industry in B.C., this hour-long program offers little about B.C.’s long history of gas development. Suzuki’s voice-over refers briefly to B.C.’s Oil and Gas Commission, insinuating it was set up as a pet regulator protecting the industry from stricter oversight.

Mostly the show focuses on places like Dish, Texas and Dimock, Pennsylvania.

The Texas segment talks about traces of neurotoxins in residents’ blood samples, blaming this on gas drilling and “fracking,” the new swear word of professional environmentalists.

The evidence shows some people have these traces in their blood, but others don’t, which suggests that more likely sources are cigarettes or exposure to disinfectants.

industry left in B.C. These are detectable by sensitive instruments, as is the case with some mining and other industrial activities, but according to the Oil and Gas Commission, they don’t do any actual harm.

It should be noted that Suzuki doesn’t do much beyond reading a script on these shows. He has people to load up the propaganda weaponry, just as his ghostwriter in Toronto cranks out the relatively innocuous weekly columns that run in some Black Press publications.

In fairness, most episodes of The Nature of Things are in the original spirit of the show. A recent program on an ancient Egyptian aquifer, voiced

by Suzuki over National Geographic video footage, would be appropriate for a high school classroom.

The same cannot be said for this anti-fracking screed, which is plainly and recklessly calculated to twist public opinion against a crucial B.C. industry.

Colorado are key stops for the anti-fracking crowd. For centuries there have been places known for methane dissolved in groundwater, typically from shallow coal seams.

This is where you can find a rustic fellow to shake a jug of well water and touch his Bic lighter to it, producing a brief blue flame. The standard sequence moves to a sink and faucet, where a more impressive methane fireball is generated.

Suzuki’s voice-over notes this is the scene that really gets media attention. There’s no evidence that drilling caused it, but hey, it’s TV. Science, meet Hillbilly Handfishin’.

Protest sequences take up much of the program.

Moms rally against a gas well near a school in Erie, Pennsylvania, forcing evil Canadian corporation Encana to back off. An elderly Quebec woman sobs on camera, convinced that a nearby gas well will trigger a relapse of her cancer.

One bit of local content is a segment on frackinginduced earthquakes, presented with sombre alarm by Ben Parfitt, go-to researcher for the anti-

Week two was also a thriller, for Elvis was in the house. Andy did a wonderful version of It’s Now or Never, followed by Better all the Time and has now become our second finalist.

I am seeing that there is some very good talent out there in Quesnel, so don’t be shy. If you can sing, come on down to Begbies and nail your spot in the finals.

Thanks Quesnel Editor: Thanks to the generous support of many individuals and business owners in the community, Petsafe Coalition of Canada raised just over $2,200 with its recent silent auction and dinner held Feb. 16 at the Smokey Oak Lounge and Restaurant.

The society exists to provide emergency shelter in the event of a local disaster, such as fire or flood and also to provide temporary foster care for pets whose owners are dealing

with domestic abuse.

This money will go a long way to help with costs of volunteer training and purchasing the necessary nonperishable supplies required in order to provide immediate response should the need arise.

The directors would like to thank everyone who helped achieve such a successful result, including volunteers, donors and the Smokey Oak for hosting the event.

A remarkable career

uesnel has many old timers, some recent arrivals and many who lived an interesting life while working in the province and especially here in the Cariboo.

Roy Reierson qualifies by virtue of his age alone. He’s 78 and amazingly is still hand falling (the oldest person certified by WorkSafe BC.) To meet WorkSafe BC conditions, Roy calls his wife Sharon by cell phone every two hours to say, “all is OK here,” from the worksite. The common practice is to have two people on site.

Roy, the first son of his parents, was born in Canyon Creek, Alberta in 1935 (180 miles north of Edmonton.)

He wanted to start an auto wrecker’s business, but at 16 years, in 1957, his dad said it was time to go to work and he boarded a train for Salmon Arm, B.C. He saw apples for the first time there.

His first job was at a Tie Mill (cutting railway ties) at a time when a crosscut saw was the common tool. Horse logging was also the common method of skidding logs to the mill.

In the early 1960s, he started falling, self-taught with little help from others then. There were no lessons for the most dangerous job in the woods.

He moved around a lot, simply following job openings.

At Horsefly, he worked with Quesnel contractor, John Travers, for 40 cents a tree, falling 100 trees a day. John was an early pioneer in using

In 1965, young brother Ed encouraged him to come to Quesnel as there was lots of good timber here. Western Plywood started their mill in 1951 – 52, the first large scale woods mill in the area.

Large fir trees were plentiful then. He fell big fir trees called “old vets” at Bluestone Road off the Nazko Road. The old mill site sawdust pile is slowly decaying while a new forest grows around it.

In 1977, he was falling a pine tree that had two poplar trees leaning against it. The plan was, once the pine started to fall, he would run out of the way, but he slipped and the poplars broke three vertebrae.

He passed out and on coming to, found all his finger tips were bleeding from trying to dig the earth away. He did get out.

He was able to move so he headed for his truck, but couldn’t find it as he was confused, but he finally did.

He had some tea, then set off for town while the pain was increasing. He drove all over the road till he got home in

a dazed state. He sat on his steps but couldn’t reach the phone and he passed out.

On waking he found his head faced one way and his legs the other. Then his wife took him to G.R. Baker Hospital.

In a short while, he was surprisingly mobile (after a fashion.) He didn’t like the bedpan routine so “held it” until late at night when he shuffled his way to the usual toilet.

A nurse saw him and, knowing he was determined to go, watched him as it took one and half hours for the round trip.

Later, the doctor mentioned to his wife about an operation. He heard and getting his wife to bring clothes, went home. He actually had three broken vertebrae, cracked ribs and several cuts and bruises.

Miraculously, he healed and now, while his back tires, he still works at selective falling and skidding at 78 years of age, with a 1974 Deere cable skidder on small holdings.

As a hobby, Roy has a collection of more than 100 power saws, including a battery starter on a McCullock, at his Red Bluff home.

It’s interesting to note that grapples on skidders replaced chokers such that new chokers can only be found in Prince George.

An amazing career.

Canadian Cancer Society is in full spring fundraising

his year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Cancer Society. Established in 1938, the society changed its name in 1946 and held its first door-to-door fundraising campaign. Held in April of that year, this month has become the time thousands of volunteers raise funds in the battle to beat cancer.

In 2012, during Daffodil Month, volunteers raised more than $13.2 million.

By the 1950s, Canadian Cancer Society activities were taking place in all provinces. During this time in the Toronto area, afternoon teas were a popular way to raise funds for the society and attract new volunteers.

One year, daffodils were used to decorate the tables and soon the teas became known as Daffodil Teas.

In 1957, bunches of daffodils were sold in Ontario to raise funds for the society and eventually daffodil sales were held across Canada. Daffodils grew to become the organization’s symbol of hope for those touched by cancer.

Finally, in 2000 the Canadian Cancer Society adopted a new logo featuring its symbol of hope – the daffodil.

In 2011, the society launched its

cross-Canada Daffodil Day, April 27 and encouraged Canadians to wear its new daffodil pin to show support for those who have survived cancer and in memory of those who have died.

In Quesnel, volunteers will soon be canvassing businesses and industry, by phone and e-mail, taking orders for fresh daffodils to be delivered on Daffodil Day, April 27.

Helping with this year’s daffodil campaign are two relatively new volunteers.

Tamara Turner signed up as a volunteer because cancer has affected her family.

“I was aware of the daffodil campaign and was glad to be joining the team,” she said.

Long-time society volunteer Cathy Briggs was excited about what Tamara brings to the campaign.

“She’s a doer and very good with

people,” Briggs said.

“Tamara brings such energy and enthusiasm.”

Together with first time volunteer Ivana Topic, they co-chair the daffodil committee.

“They’re so organized and Ivana brings such a willingness to help and is so good with our other volunteers,” Briggs said.

Ivana moved to Quesnel to go to school. Previously from Prince George, she had participated in that community’s Relay for Life.

However, since moving here, Ivana employs her writing skills for the Canadian Cancer Society in its monthly column Cancer Clips, takes a shift in the office on Front Street and will now add the Daffodil Campaign to her list of responsibilities as well as a Relay for Life mentor.

“Quesnel is awesome. I wish every single community had what we have here,” Ivana said.

“It’s great to see people stepping up to do something for others.”

Briggs went on to say how great it is to have young blood on the team who bring such enthusiasm and new ideas.

“They energize everyone,” she said.

“This year, I’m very proud to be a volunteer with Canadian Cancer Society which does such good work and I know every volunteer is valued.”

With her extensive experience with the society, Cathy admitted she just happens to bring useful baggage to her volunteering.

“Everyone has skills they bring to their volunteering and that’s a good thing,” she added.

So when you receive notice it’s time to order bunches of daffodils, remember to give generously in support of our local Canadian Cancer Society branch. Deadline for pre-orders is March 15.

“In the north, the daffodil is one of our sure signs of spring,” Briggs said.

“It reflects renewal, hope and life.”

These are the public signs of a service -oriented life. But beyond what we are accustomed to seeing, there are many more small acts of kindness, community spirit and vision, lived out quietly and consistently each day.

Mike was a railroader from 1937 to 1985 and loved his work. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity for 60 years and proud of it.

Marian Olive Patchett December 29, 1921 - January 1, 2013

Gone but not forgotten, Marian Patchett passed away peacefully on January 1, 2013, at the age of 91.

Marian was born in Quesnel, delivered by Dr. Baker Dec. 29, 1921 to Rebecca and Horace W. Warden. She was the second of three children, with an older brother Philip, and a younger brother Geoff.

Marian graduated from high school in Quesnel in a graduating class of 12 students. She worked for a short time at the telephone office before marrying Cyril Patchett in 1943.

Through the next several years, Cy and Marian welcomed three boys; Ron, Don and Terry.

Marian’s home in north Quesnel became a central gathering place first for friends of her children, then later, friends of her grandchildren.

Marian spent many hours knitting for her children, grandchildren, and for many other grandchildren, nieces and nephews, she was often seen with knitting needles in her hands. Marian volunteered for many organizations throughout her life, including the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Good Cheer, Quesnel Rodeo, Quesnel Fall Fair, Quesnel & District Museum. For over 50 years she spent many hours with friends making layettes for the new born babies at GR Baker Memorial Hospital.

Throughout the years she was often seen cheering for her husband, children and grandchildren at many sporting events including baseball, hockey and team roping. Marian also enjoyed swimming, baking pies and chocolate chip cookies, or whipping up a batch of her mustard.

In the later years she moved to Maeford Place, just down the street from her home of 65 years, where she had many friends new and old.

Having been born and raised in Quesnel, Marian was a wealth of knowledge as far as the history of Quesnel was concerned, and often could be caught telling the history of a particular family or building.

Marian will always be remembered by her sons; Don (Jean), Terry (Nancy), daughter-in-law Anna, 7 grandchildren; Stacey, Trevor (Ryane), Trina, Nicholas, Carrie, Mark (Lisa) and Tina (Graham). As well as 3 great grandchildren; Quentin, Mya and Alex.

Marian was predeceased by her husband Cyril, son Ronald, brothers; Philip Warden (Beatrice) and Geoff Warden.

The family would like to thank everyone that made her stay at G.R. Barker Memorial Hospital comfortable. A very special thank you to the staff at the Hospice House and Dr. Walker for all the great care as Marian lived out her last days. Thank you to all her dear friends who came and made her life so much brighter, with kind words and reminiscing about days gone by.

New Gold Inc. is proposing the construction, operation, and decommissioning of an open pit gold and silver mine located approximately 100 kilometres south of Vanderhoof, British Columbia. As proposed, the project would produce 60,000 tonnes per day of gold and silver ore, over a mine life of 17 years.

As part of the strengthened and modernized Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012) put in place to support the government's Responsible Resource Development Initiative, the Agency is conducting a federal environmental assessment of this project.

This project is being assessed using a science-based approach. If the project is permitted to proceed to the next phase, it will continue to be subject to Canada’s strong environmental laws, rigorous enforcement and follow-up and increased fines.

This Thunder strikes twice

Peewee and midget Thunder beat P.G. to make Championship JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Two levels of Thunder hit the Prince George T3 Cougars, creating shock and awe that sent the peewee and midget Thunder on to the playoffs.

Both peewee and midget teams played a double header Saturday, with peewee teams leading off at 9:30 a.m.

The Thunder took off as soon as the whistle blew in their first game, netting a trio of goals within the first period, putting them three points out in front of the P.G. team.

In the second, the Cougars tried to pull themselves together, cracking the ice at the mid-point of the period with a goal. The Thunder made the goal moot five minutes later with one of their own, finishing the second still three goals ahead.

In the third, the Thunder hit the score board at the midpoint, to which the Cougars responded seconds before the end of the game, with a final of 5-2 in favour of the Thunder.

“Once we were able to finally get a couple past the P.G. goalies you could feel the energy come out of them and we cruised on to win both games,” –midget coach Rick Izzard

The midgets took to the ice next, at noon.

The Cougars opened up the scoring, but the Thunder responded quickly and then doubled it in the dying seconds of the first.

The Thunder did one point better in the second, putting three past the Cougars goaltender, while the Cougars reprised their first period performance with a single goal midway through the period.

The pattern continued into the third, with the Thunder doing one better than their performance in the second, with four points and the Cougars adding a single point to their tally, to finish the game, 9-3 for the Thunder.

The peewees took back to the ice hours later.

The Thunder got off to a slower start, with a single goal in the first two minutes of the period the

only mark on the score sheet through twenty minutes.

The game picked up in the second, with the Thunder hardly letting three minutes get by without availing themselves of another goal, with the Cougars netting their lonely point half way through.

The third was placid as a lake on the scoreboard, the Cougars hampering themselves with penalties and the Thunder content to sit back and win the 7-1 game, putting them in the championships.

“We have been in a bit of a slump the past five games, so it was good to see the kids come out and rise to the occasion and clinch a spot at provincials,” peewee coach Dustin Peacock said.

The midget Thunder finished their double header in the evening.

The game got off to a slow start, with the Thunder posting the only goal in the first.

In the second the Thunder found their legs and netted three goals in six minutes. The Cougars only found a single point in the second, as the seconds counted down they made their impact on the scoreboard.

The Thunder continued to make headway in the third, scoring early at 18:51. The Cougars responded three minutes later, but the Thunder were having none of that, putting in another to finish 6-3.

“Our guys kept their composure and once we were able to finally get a couple past the P.G. goalies you could feel the energy come out of them and we cruised on to win both games,” midget coach Rick Izzard said.

Midgets are off to Port Alberni and Peewees are off to Creston for Provincial Championships during Spring Break, with the Quesnel Bantam Tier 3 Thunder competing in Dawson Creek for their championships during the same week.

Two Rivers Boxers get experience in Vancouver JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

Two Rivers boxing club took a trio of young men down to Vancouver to take on the southerners last weekend.

Joey McKerricher, Kyle Tessier and Zayd Jalifi made the trip down to test their mettle.

McKerricher, the most experienced of the trio, was up against Vernon boxer Jake Stuckberry.

Stuckberry was taller, with a longer reach, which he used to tag McKerricher with a hard right early on in the first. McKerricher stumbled and covered up, causing the ref to give him an eight count.

Before the first was done, McKerricher took another eight count from a hard right.

With two eight counts, the ref called the contest.

The club’s coach, Wally Doern is now looking to tweak McKerricher’s style to get rid of the flaws the bout highlighted.

“Joey, we’ve got to change his style a little bit. He’s dropping his left hand too much which was his downfall,” Doern said.

Tessier took on Vancouver boxer Oozman Shaharu in his match.

Tessier, who had watched a few of Oozman’s fights on Youtube, came to the bout with a plan.

“I came up with a plan to

put him on the ropes with body shots,” Tessier said.

His plan to pepper Shaharu with body shots worked, keeping Shaharu on the ropes for much of the bout.

Despite Tessier’s seeming success, he lost the bout by judge’s decision.

The plan, it turned out was flawed because the judge’s didn’t count most of the body shots, while Shaharu’s few shots were mostly to the head, where the judges could clearly see and as such were all counted.

“He fought his heart out basically, but we have to make some changes there too. Amateur boxing’s not much on the body attack.

We’re going to have to go away from the body a bit and go to the head more where the judges can see it,” Doern said.

Jalifi went down to take on Steve Schos from Vernon in an exhibition round, in which the judges don’t keep score.

“It was good for Zayd.

Actually, for a beginner like Zayd, a great way to start is an exhibition,” said Doern.

“This way they both got a taste of it, got in the ring in front of a good crowd, and it turned out well. Both boxed very well.”

The club is back in action in March, back at Bouchie Lake Hall hosting another Rumble for their hometown crowd.

Locals find success in P.G. leg of championship

Eight Quesnel athletes from the Cariboo Ski Touring Club’s biathlon team competed at the BC Cup Championships in Prince George on the Febr.

23–24 weekend.

Teams from across B.C. attended with the senior athletes vying for berths on the B.C. Team that will be competing at the National Championships in midMarch at Whistler Olympic Park.

The wet, snowy weather on Sunday provided some

additional challenges, especially after the clear sunny skies of Saturday, but the team continued the success of previous B.C. Cup races, with strong performances by all.

The results of the sprint races on Saturday were: in midgets, Claire Elden took silver; in junior boys, Tristan Langan found gold with Ryan Elden right behin, taking silver; in junior girls, Kyra Teetzen took gold and Anni Kurta bronze; in senior girls,

Madison Roll finished fifth; in senior boys, Konrad Teetzen came in seventh; and Chris Elden made bronze in masters men.

Super League

The Super League playoffs rolled on for most teams last week, with teams scrabbling for a foothold in the ice-slippery ranks of the winners.

Frank's Supermarket and Sky-Hi were only two teams to take a rest from the retrace, postponing their struggles for a later date.

JAR Transportation and Karin's Deli were locked in a desperate battle, with JAR ending one up, at 8-7.

With the hammer in the extra end, JAR didn't have to use their last rock to score the win.

This weekend was the last of the official provincial race season, but there are several more regional races still to come, including one in Quesnel on Sunday, March 10. chool District #28 kindergarten registration for the 2013-14 is well underway. Up until March 15, parents of five year olds will be visiting their neighbourhood schools to register for a September start.

Before their children start Kindergarten, parents often ask how they can help their children to have the best start possible. There are many things parents can do at home that will support school success and some great information will be available at the time of registration.

In fact, the earlier you start language activities at home, the more likely it is that your children will be strong readers at school. And if your child is a strong reader by the end of Grade 3, the chance of them graduating successfully from school and having a productive future is more than 95 per cent.

Here are two things to work into your regular routines.

You have probably already heard this one, but it is really important so well worth repeating.

Read books to and with your children!

Children who are exposed to books develop print awareness, often before they come to school. They develop a concept of how text works and that text can provide meaning.

They hear words, many words, and get a sense of how words are put together. This is important for a child’s developing phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they need to become more aware of how the sounds in words work.

“One of the most compelling and well established findings in the research on beginning reading is the important relationship between phonemic awareness and reading acquisition.”

We used to make up silly nonsense word games doing this type of thing whenever we were in the car. We also used to play a lot of “I Spy” everywhere we went, spying things that started with specific sounds.

There are many, many ways to incorporate fun activities that support this learning.

Using language is also really important for reading success, so talk, talk, talk!

Talking seems pretty straightforward, but children from language rich homes where there is a lot of verbal interaction come to school having heard and/or spoken up to thirty million or more words than some of their classmates.

Parents, relatives, friends and siblings have many conversations with the child – from answering simple questions to carrying on longer conversations about many things.

Over the first

five years, those conversations add up.

Sing to and with your child, recite rhymes together and talk about words.

This can be very simply done; you are not actually teaching your child phonics, but helping them to identify sounds – for example, can you make the sound your name starts with? Not the letter name, but the sounds.

Another example, take a simple word like not: What am I trying to say? (nnnnnnn-oooooo-t); or, what is the first sound in not?; what is the last sound in not?; Can you tell me all of the sounds in not?

Again, simple sound awareness activities that are easily worked into regular routines can be turned into fun games for your child that will ultimately help them to become strong readers.

Community Arts Council

The Quesnel and District Community Arts Council (QDCAC) facilitates the growth and development of arts, heritage, and culture through advocacy, education, promotion, and communication. The purpose of the QDCAC is to increase and broaden the opportunities for Quesnel and District citizens to enjoy and participate in arts, cultural and heritage activities.

The council is currently comprised of 10 member groups, several independent members, representatives from the city and a school district liaison. These members may also serve on the Council’s Standing Committees. The council meets on the last Monday of the month, from September through May at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at the Recreation Centre. It’s AGM and elections are held in May. QDCAC has two pianos available for rental: • the grand piano, is stored at the Chuck Mobley Theatre within the Correlieu secondary school. It is used primarily for concerts held at that location; • the upright piano is stored and used, primarily, for functions at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre.

Arrangements for the rental of either instrument can be made through the Art Gallery at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre. The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., or a message can be left at 250-992-8200.

Quesnel & District Community Arts Council, 7th Biennial Award, Gallery of Honour, will issue a call for nominations in 2013 for “those who have made significant contributions to the community through the arts over many years, as artists, educators, friends and as advocates for the arts.”

Two bursaries are awarded annually to local graduating students who are going on to post secondary arts education. To date, more than $20,000 has been awarded to local students.

The Quesnel Art Gallery, formerly the Quesnel Arts Society, has been dedicated to the cause of promoting the work of talented, home-grown local artists since 1968 and offers residents and visitors the chance to view some of the most unique and original art exhibitions in the Cariboo. Exhibitions are held regularly throughout the year, and feature a variety of mediums and styles by artists from B.C. and around the world. Mayor sees 2013 as another great year

As 2013 begins, Mary Sjostrom is well into her second term as Mayor of the City of Quesnel, and says the city and the community are getting a lot of good work done.

The city took large strides in sustainable planning in 2012. The development of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan is nearing completion; the community has played a large role.

Another great project was the well drilling, drain installation, and storm drain improvements in the West Quesnel Land Stability Study area. This phase of dewatering is expected to run until spring 2014, when the city will evaluate the results and determine the next steps.

Air Quality Roundtable Living in our city forces us to wrestle with the issue of air quality’s affects on health. At the same time, some of the problems with air quality directly result from the jobs that allow many of us to live here. However, we can’t simply point the finger at industry for causing all pollution. Each of us contributes to air quality through the choices we make on a daily basis. At the centre of this concept of “air quality” lies “quality of life” and “quality of economy” – creating a complex web of circumstances.

Addressing this complex web are the individuals on the Air Quality Roundtable (AQRT). This multi-stakeholder group began developing the Airshed Management Planning process in 1999. Due to the efforts of the AQRT, Quesnel’s air quality is monitored seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The aim is to continuously improve the quality of our air by tackling all sources of pollution, from back yard residential burning to large industrial sources.

Baker Creek Enhancement Society Today BCES continues to do stream restoration, but carries out many other projects as well. Chinese exhibit builds bridges In a ground-breaking exhibit that fuses cutting-edge technology with history, Chinese citizens have the opportunity to identify ancestors who journeyed to Barkerville, British Columbia during the gold rush of the 1860s.

Who Am I? Bridging the Pacific from Guangdong to Barkerville and Back is about to embark on an 18 month tour to Hong Kong and Guangdong Province in China.

The exhibit recently closed a month long run at Sun Yat-Sen Gardens in Vancouver. This innovative collection invites visitors to explore Barkerville’s extensive historic photographs of Chinese immigrants.

At the kiosks, visitors have the opportunity to fill in the blanks by identifying their ancestors as they swipe through the collection of 1,400 images using a unique iPad interface. The exhibit has already resulted in some positive identifications via descendants of Barkerville residents now living in the Lower mainland.

Barkerville’s collections have an increasingly important role to play in building bridges between cultures and linking our past to our future. The buildings, photographs and archival material tell stories that have been lost on the other side of the Pacific.

Quesnel Youth Soccer

The Quesnel Youth Soccer Association is a volunteer based organization dedicated to providing recreational and developmental soccer to Quesnel and area. Q.Y.S.A.’s indoor facility boasts a 64 x 61m artificial turf surface, allowing for year round programming.

The outdoor facility consists of four full size fields plus two super eight fields.

Both the indoor and outdoor fields are situated conveniently in West Quesnel along the Fraser River.

Youth soccer programming includes spring and winter house seasons with U5 to U18 age divisions. The spring season consists of a two-game-per-week schedule running from May – June. The winter schedule runs from early October – February. A toddlers program is also offered for younger children as well.

Q.Y.S.A.’s rep and developmental teams are most active during the spring and summer. Teams also attend tournaments throughout the province until the end of summer.

Adult leagues also use the outdoor fields during the summer months as well as the indoor fields during the winter.

The indoor facility is also utilized by others sports and recreational groups, including cricket, softball, schools, birthday parties and walking groups, just to name a few.

River City Music Association Quesnel Regional Airport The River City Music Association (RCMA) is a non profit society comprised of musicians residing in Quesnel and the surrounding areas. The RCMA strongly endorses live music as an essential part of our healthy community.

The RCMA holds monthly jam sessions where all ages are welcome to play, sing, dance or listen to great live music of all genres performed by local musicians. Check the Observer or posters around town for the date and location of the jam nights.

RCMA dances are being planned where two or three bands will take turns entertaining. The RCMA is a new member group of the Quesnel and District Community Arts Council and we look forward to having a web page soon.

Salvation Army stands ready to serve The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world. In Quesnel, this mission is lived out through our programs at The Warrior’s Song Café at 374 McLean Street and our Thrift Store and Church at 246 St. Laurent Avenue.

The Warrior’s Song Café, open 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tuesday – Friday, offers a warm and safe place for coffee, conversation and a hot meal. All are welcome. The food bank and family services operate Tuesday – Thursday, three weeks/month and offer food hampers, clothing, etc., as well as Christian support and prayer.

The Thrift Store provides a unique retail operation in Quesnel and also supports the programs at The Warrior’s Song Café.

Come for the freshness, stay for the fun This season marks the 25 consecutive year for the Farmers’ Market in Quesnel. Back in 1988, in the treed site where the Quesnel Seniors’ Centre now stands, a handful of young vendors offered a modest amount of produce and some crafts for one Saturday that year.

Over the years, the market was moved from a dusty parking lot to a paved one, and then to the Legion and now on the grassy field of Helen Dixon School. The Quesnel Farmers’ Market has grown into one of the most successful markets in all of B.C. Nowadays, with strong consumer interests for healthy, fresh, local, natural and organic foods, agriculture is enjoying a resurgence. Ski Hallis Lake for the best cross-country experience With an enhanced rental shop, the Cariboo Ski Touring Club members and drop-in guests have been taking advantage of every snow day through Christmas break and weekends.

The kids’ programs are bursting with enthusiastic youth trekking through bush trails and taking off down the adventure park jumps while night lessons and guided ski tours buzz with the bustle of new skiers or improving skiers taking advantage of instructors and guides.

The ski school has 260 students, each booked for three sessions, totalling 780 on snow days this season for elementary aged youth in and around the community.

Still to come this season are the elementary school races, more evening (under the lights) and weekend lessons, social events at the lodge, guided ski tours Wednesday nights, contests like the 75km Ski Challenge and many more activities with a full rental shop to fit any size, from two year olds and up.

And with a new grooming machine, the 75km of trails including lit tracks and dog loops are keeping everyone smiling, skiing in the winter wonderland at Hallis Lake.

The Quesnel Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Since it opened its doors in 1963, there have been several additions, so that the museum’s impressive collection is now displayed in three galleries. Exhibits feature many of the early businesses, the predominant industries of mining, agriculture and forestry and room settings providing a glimpse of an earlier lifestyle.

The remarkable portraits taken by C.D. Hoy and C.S. Wing in the early twentieth century capture the strong personalities of the First Nation, Chinese and European settlers who resided in the area. The multicultural character of the community was further enriched since the middle of the century with a growing Indo-Canadian population.

Representatives of each of these communities tell their stories through short videos integrated into the exhibits.

Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library (FoL) was formed in 2007 and incorporated in 2010. The goals of the FoL are to have the library be a focal point of the community and a centre for learning and education; and to represent the community as an advisory and advocacy group.

SD28 committed to each and every student The Quesnel School District is committed to meeting the needs of each student in a safe, caring, and inclusive environment. Over the past 12 years the trend in our completion rates has been steady improvement and we have been at or above the provincial graduation average.

All of our schools have identified the development of social responsibility as an important goal for improving the culture of their schools. The Board of Education is committed to keeping class sizes small in all schools. There are 14 neighbourhood K-7 elementary schools.

Our Grade 8-9 junior secondary school is modelled on a middle school philosophy: students divided into smaller groups, a focus on core subjects, and enhanced social emotional programming. The Grade 10-12 secondary school provides comprehensive course offerings. Specialty programs such as French Immersion and Distributed Learning are available to students in grades K to 12. The McNaughton Centre Alternate Program supports secondary students through social emotional programming and academic courses. 2 Rivers Boxing Club Quesnel Wordspinners 2 Rivers boxing Club started in 1998, with a brief hiatus from 2004 to 2009. Since forming, the club has hosted a total of 26 boxing competitions with clubs from all over B.C. and Alberta attending.

2 Rivers Boxing features recreational and competitive participants for all ages and gender. Boxing teaches fitness, training, discipline, self confidence and respect.

It is a great workout for the competitive as well as the non-competitive.

The costs for joining and participating are reasonable and affordable. Members practice three nights a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Quesnel Native Friendship Centre’s gymnasium at 319 North Fraser Dr. Cardio workout lasts about one hour, 6-7 p.m. and then sparring for the competitors goes from 7-8 p.m. If you are unsure about the training, come out for a free session and then decide.

QFPA committed to the arts The Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts is a nonprofit society dedicated to promote local talent. This year celebrates the society’s 30th anniversary. The goal is to provide a forum for students of the performing arts – music, dance, speech arts, and vocal – to perform in public before an experienced, skilled adjudicator, in order to receive training and opportunities above and beyond what they receive in their regular studies, by way of adjudications and critiques.

Every spring, over a period of about four to six weeks, participants aged five and up gain greater knowledge and appreciation for the performing arts through their participation. For each discipline there are trophies, artistic performance awards, scholarships and medals and the top performing participants between the ages of 10-28 years may be chosen to compete at the annual Provincial Festival of the Performing Arts. As a non-profit society, QFPA is run by a group of volunteers who are devoted to keeping and cultivating a life-long passion for the arts.

So come and support our community’s youth who are pursuing their passion for the arts. Adjudication begins March 7 and concludes April 6.

From its casual beginnings in 1975, Quesnel Wordspinners have evolved and amalgamated with other groups to become the strong organization it is today. Despite several name changes the commitment has remained – a deep interest in writing. Over the years, in addition to offering support to each other, the group have sponsored speakers, workshops and self-help sessions. Since 1991 the wordspinners have published twelve books of poetry and prose and includes two cookbooks – one in 1998 which sold out quickly and their latest publication ‘Mixing Words…and Appetites’ just out. Many of the members have their own books, or are working on future endeavors. Except for summer, Quesnel Wordspinners meet the first Wednesday afternoon of the month and mid-month in the home of one of the members for a readers’ meeting to provide incentive and encouragement. Waveriders, a thriving club The Quesnel Waveriders Swim Club is a not-for-profit, community based competitive swim club, affiliated with Swim BC and Swimming Canada. The Waveriders started in 2011 with six swimmers and now have more than 30.

This year, Waveriders happily joined with the Sea Lions summer swim club as they train in winter maintenance.

This brings the total to more than 50 youth in community swimming throughout the winter. The goal is to develop excellence in competitive swimming according to each individual swimmer’s potential. Waveriders strives to provide an atmosphere to enhance social development and emotional growth of each individual swimmer.

The club has wonderful community sponsors and very supportive, involved parents as well as a highly trained coach. In 2013, Waveriders continues to set goals for the club. Thanks to the generous support from Quesnel Rotary, a new scoreboard will be installed at the pool enabling the club to host sanctioned swim meets. In the near future, plans are in the works to give swimmers the opportunity to swim with Olympians for a weekend in the pool in Quesnel! The club promotes long-term goals such as university swimming and has the potential to put swimmers on an Olympic path.

Quesnel Quilter’s Guild Women’s Resource Centre

The Quesnel Quilter’s Guild is a diverse group of women of all ages and abilities who meet regularly to share their love of fabric and quilting, and to practice the art of quilting. At present, there are 59 members, some with years of involvement and some new to quilting and the guild.

Meetings are held in the lounge at the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre once a week.

Meetings are the first and third Tuesday, 10 – 11:30 a.m.

Bring some hand work to do as you socialize on these days. Evening meetings are the second and fourth Tuesday, 7 – 8:30 p.m. The second Tuesday evening meeting is a business meeting; the fourth Tuesday evening is a program or demo night.

Our members are committed to making community comfort quilts. These quilts are given to children and young teens in crisis. Each year the guild brings in an expert to teach us some new techniques. You must be a member of the guild to attend these workshops. Every three years we host a major quilt show and, having done one this year, the next one will be held in 2016.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Quesnel Big Brothers Big Sisters of Quesnel is dedicated to helping children develop their full potential through friendships and mentoring programs.

The screened and trained Big Sister/ Big Brother is matched with a child to provide friendship and to be a positive person in the child’s life. Our local agency funds many of the activities available here in Quesnel.

For all our children in the program, whether they are matched or not, we organize monthly activities. BBBSQ also offers four other diverse programs including Couples for Kids, Community In-school Mentoring, Teen In-school Mentoring and Go Girls/Game On. The Women’s Centre opened its doors 32 years ago in order to both provide women-centered services to local women and to promote the rights of all women. Our mission is to enhance the status of women by addressing issues of importance to women. The Women’s Centre is operated as a collective and is open to all women in the community. There are nine local women on the collective, volunteers and staff who together make decisions about the organization. Women are invited to drop in to the centre for information, referrals to other services or just for someone to talk to share their ups and downs.

The coffee is always on and the library is always open.

The centre provides a number of services including counselling services to women and outreach workers who provide information, advocacy, support and transportation for clients. Educational workshops and groups are also offered.

On Thursday afternoons, from 12 – 4 p.m., the Luna Women’s Wellness clinic is staffed by public health nurses. Women are able to drop in for a range of services.

Childminding is available during the visits.

An assault response line has been voluntarily carried by centre staff where anyone who has been sexually assaulted or abused can call 24 hours/day to access anonymous confidential support, information and on-going advocacy to deal with the assault or abuse.

All services are free of charge and can be accessed by calling the centre at 250-992-8472.

Quesnel Pipe and Drums

The Quesnel Pipes and Drums is a non-profit volunteer organization which has been in existence since 1953 and is dedicated to playing and promoting bagpipe music and Canadian Scottish culture. We perform at various community events throughout the year, including the Billy Barker Days parade, Remembrance Day ceremonies, Robert Burns Night, Canada Day in Barkerville, Rocky Mountaineer train arrivals, Relay For Life, and more.
