Charges laid in Bacon murder Three men also charged with attempted murder of Maple Ridge woman

Three men are facing charges for a brazen gang-style shooting in Kelowna that killed Red Scorpion kingpin Jonathan Bacon and paralyzed a young woman from Maple Ridge.

Charged with first degree murder are Jujhar Singh Khun-Khun, 25, of Surrey, Michael Kerry Hunter Jones, 25, of Gibsons, and Jason Thompson McBride, 37, of Hadden-Watt North Vancouver, police announced Monday.

There was one other suspect, now dead, who police would not name.

The three were arrested Friday and also charged with the attempted murders of Hells Angel Larry Amero, now jailed in Montreal, Independent Soldier James Riach, Maple Ridge’s Leah HaddenWatt, as well as Lyndsey Black.

Police allege Bacon, Amero and Riach were in Kelowna that weekend as members of a recently formed criminal alliance known as the Wolf Pack.

“This was a targeted, organized attack by the highest level of organized crime in our province,” Chief Supt. Dan Malo, with the RCMP’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, said in Delta. see Charges, p8

Guilty plea in drunk driving death Trevor Livingston to be sentenced in May

A Maple Ridge man has pleaded guilty to drunk-driving in a crash that killed his girlfriend almost four years ago.

Trevor Livingston entered the

plea to one count of impaired driving causing death Thursday in New Westminster Supreme Court, several months before a trial was set to begin.

He will return to court for sentencing in May. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

“I can’t go into the specifics of sentencing at this point,” said Crown spokesperson Neil MacKenzie.

‘Open arms’ for community gaming centre New facility on Lougheed to have 150 slots, bingo, off-track betting

Great Canadian Gaming bought the Maple Ridge business community lunch on Monday afternoon at The ACT, and explained what the new Community Gaming Centre is going to mean to the district.

The facility could be a significant windfall for the coffers at municipal hall.

There are presently 100 slots at the Community Gaming Centre on 224th Street, and they generated $787,000 as 10 per cent of the district’s share of the gaming profits.

With 150 slots, housed in new $15 million facility on Lougheed Highway, the gaming revenue generated for the municipality could be considerably more.

“It all depends on consumer acceptance and excitement,” said Jim Lightbody, the vice president of casino and community gaming for the B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC).

He was one of the three main speakers at the Monday luncheon.

Flanked by poster-sized artist’s conceptions of the new 30,000-square-foot building, Mayor Ernie Daykin said the new facility will change the face of the area.

It is to open by the end of the year.

Lightbody said people can get a sneak preview of the building by seeing the new Chances Chilliwack facility.

“You’ll truly be amazed,” he said.

The facility will offer bingo, off-track betting, a lounge and a “great array” of slots.

It will be a venue for bands and other entertainment on weekends, and there will be patio seating.

Lightbody addressed the criticisms of the province’s gaming venues. He said the B.C. government conducted a 2004 study, which found that crime did not increase after casinos were added to Vancouver, Cloverdale and Langley. He credited on-site security and

“So far, it’s been open arms,” said Lightbody, adding that city staff “really have a can-do approach.”

“We want to be part of the community, and we want it to be a great place to go,” he said.

The research also found that the incidence of problem gambling in those communities did not increase, which he admits is “probably a surprise to some people.”

However, he explained that about 4.6 per cent of the population is at risk of developing gambling problems, and because of this “social responsibility is part of our DNA.” Howard Blank, vice-president of Great Canadian, said his company endeavours to educate gamblers about gaming, the house ad-

vantage, and other factors that empower them to make responsible decisions.

“We don’t want to make money off people who can’t afford to be there,” he said.

Lightbody said the province made $1.1 billion in gaming revenue last year. About 80 per cent of that went into the provincial budget, paying for health care, education and other government services. About 20 per cent was given as grants to arts groups, sports organizations and school parent advisory councils.

The Coldest Night of the Year will serve up a lot of warm meals for homeless people in Maple Ridge.

As Saturday’s event started, some 110 participants in the first such charity walk met at the Salvation Army Caring Place, 22188 Lougheed Highway, just as many clients who would benefit from the event were arriving to have their dinner.

The canvass by the walkers, who did five- and 10-kilometre walks, raised $15,000, which will mostly be put toward the Sally Ann’s local food program.

There were Coldest Night walks in Charlottetown, Montreal, Thunder Bay, Edmonton and a total of 38 cities across Canada that night. Put on by various social services agencies, they are all intended to “support the hungry, homeless and hurting across Canada.”

Considering February temperatures on the Prairies, “we definitely had one of the nicer places to do a walk,” said Norrie.

Still, the walkers were appreciative of the hot chocolate and coffee stations along the route. They mostly came from

churches, school groups and agencies, including Fraser Health, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and staff from the Salvation Army.

“There was a great energy – lots of community members out supporting the event,” said Norrie.

At the end of the walk, which took about two hours for the 10-km participants, they had hot beverages, chili and fellowship.

The top fundraising team was the ministry’s Ridge Racers, who brought in almost $4,000, and who will be treated to a team dessert by Salvation Army chef Tim Sarsfield.

Norrie said the fundraiser will be revisited in 2014.

“It’ll be back in February of next year – we definitely plan to do it again.”

Bride suffers cuts to head and leg three weeks before wedding Vancouver police are investigating a weekend bar fight in Yaletown that sent a bride-to-be from Pitt Meadows to the hospital with injuries.

Around 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 23, police were called to the Bar None Night Club on Hamilton Street.

When they arrived, they found a 29-year-old woman suffering from cuts to her head and leg.

It appears that the woman, there for her stagette party, was involved in an altercation inside the bar with two different groups of people.

Police are working to identify all the people involved in the fight and will be reviewing video to establish what exactly went on inside the club.

Rather than advocating for minimum sentences, MADD Canada believes the penalties must reflect the gravity of the offence, the offender’s behaviour and the irreparable harm that results from a drunk driving death.

“Looking at sentencing for impaired drivers is very important for MADD because impaired driving for some reason has somewhat been taken lightly when it comes to the courts,,” said Dubyk.

“Victims are left often wondering what in the world is happening.

You feel that there are certain sentences that should come down and they don’t. Over the years, we’ve seen some lenient sentences.”

MADD Canada plans to track Livingston’s case and its final outcome.

Maple Ridge pizza place, sub shop, target of robbers

Ridge Meadows RCMP are looking for possibly two suspects after a pair of food establishments were the target of robberies this past weekend.

The first robbery took place Friday around 9 p.m. at a Subway restaurant on Lougheed Highway near 228th Street.

A man walked into the restaurant, demanded money from the employees and ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police said he fled in a white car, possibly a Honda Civic.

He is described as a white man in his 20s, approximately six-feet tall with a medium

A day later, Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to a Domino’s Pizza in the 22500-block of Lougheed Highway.

Just after 9 p.m. on Saturday, a lone man walked into the store, pulled out a weapon and demanded money.

When the staff refused to follow his instructions, the man left.

He was seen getting into a green minivan, that drove west on Lougheed Hwy. He is described as a white man, 5’10’’ with a thin build.

He was wearing a dark coloured hooded

“At this time police aren’t sure if this was done by one or two suspects,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are alerting residents to a scam involving home theatre systems.

On Saturday, an 18-year-old man bought a home theatre system from a “friendly” salesman at Meadow Town mall. When the young man got home, he found out the system did not work.

Police said the man who sold the system was working out of a van and investigators are trying to find out who he is.

Not another day Today is not just another day.

It’s not a holiday, not a day marked by cards or flowers or candy, not even a day off school or work.

It’s more important – a day to right wrongs, to admit mistakes and pledge not to repeat them, a day to recognize that while we are different, we are the same – we all have feelings, likes and dislikes, we are all human; we all deserve respect, and compassion, second chances.

It is more than a day just marked by pink shirts – a message, a symbol, a reminder that bullying won’t be tolerated, not in this province, not anywhere.

Bullying hurts, and harms.

The scars of those who have suffered from it run long and deep, and are everlasting. They map out lives damaged by episodes of ridicule and isolation, physical and emotional abuse.

Often the discovery and understanding of such acts occurr after the fact, when the victims are young, after the damage has been done, and sometimes there is no repairing that.

No matter what happens to the bully.

That is why Anti-Bullying Day is so important, because it seeks to create awareness about the cause and effects of such behaviours, to educate us all in an effort to prevent and end bullying – at school, at home, at work, in person or from a distance.

Take time this day to think about that.

It’s not enough to just not be a bully.

We need to stop others from being one, too, to step in and speak up.

That requires courage, and we need more of it.

That is how this day started, after two Grade 9 boys in Nova Scotia stuck up for another who was being harrassed for wearing a pink shirt.

Suzuki the Don Cherry of TV science VICTORIA – He has a white beard and a bully pulpit on CBC television, but he doesn’t use it to promote hockey fighting.

Instead he sucker punches the oil and gas industry at every opportunity, with increasingly flagrant disregard for the rules B.C. Views of science.

Public broadcasting Tom Fletcher referees keep their whistles in their pockets, wary of offending a legend.

He’s David Suzuki, and he has evolved from geneticist to TV celebrity to his current role as the Don Cherry of Canadian science, an angry curmudgeon lashing out at his enemies.

Earlier I wrote about Suzuki’s hit piece on the Alberta oil sands, featuring selective pollution studies and a celebrity turn by movie director James Cameron, who toured the alleged carbon crime scene in his personal jet helicopter.

Suzuki’s latest Scud missile of misinformation was launched Feb. 7 on The Nature of Things. It’s called Shattered Ground, and it borrows heavily from earlier shock docs that target hydraulic fracturing for shale oil and gas.

While clearly aimed at the surging shale gas industry in B.C., this hour-long program offers little about B.C.’s long history of gas development. Suzuki’s voice-over refers briefly to B.C.’s Oil and Gas Commission, insinuating it was set up as a pet regulator protecting the industry from

stricter oversight.

Mostly the show focuses on places like Dish, Texas and Dimock, Pennsylvania.

The Texas segment talks about traces of neurotoxins in residents’ blood samples, blaming this on gas drilling and “fracking,” the new swear word of professional environmentalists.

The evidence shows some people have these traces in their blood, but others don’t, which suggests that more likely sources are cigarettes or exposure to disinfectants.

Pennsylvania and Colorado are key stops for the anti-fracking crowd. For centuries there have been places known for methane dissolved in groundwater, typically from shallow coal seams.

This is where you can find a rustic fellow to shake a jug of well water and touch his Bic lighter to it, producing a brief blue flame. The standard sequence moves to a sink and faucet, where a more impressive methane fireball is generated.

Suzuki’s voice-over notes that this is the scene that really gets media attention.

There’s no evidence that drilling caused it, but hey, it’s TV. Science, meet Hillbilly Handfishin’.

Protest sequences take up much of the program. Moms rally against a gas well near a school in Erie, Pennsylvania, forcing evil Canadian corporation Encana to back off. An elderly Quebec woman sobs on camera, convinced that a nearby gas well will trigger a relapse of her cancer.

One bit of local content is a segment on fracking-induced earthquakes, presented with sombre alarm by Ben Parfitt, go-to researcher for the anti-industry left in B.C. These are detectable by sensitive

instruments, as is the case with some mining and other industrial activities, but according to the Oil and Gas Commission, they don’t do any actual harm.

It should be noted that Suzuki doesn’t do much beyond reading a script on these shows. He has people to load up the propaganda weaponry, just as his ghostwriter in Toronto cranks out the relatively innocuous weekly columns that run in some Black Press publications.

In fairness, most episodes of The Nature of Things are in the original spirit of the show. A recent program on an ancient Egyptian aquifer, voiced by Suzuki over National Geographic video footage, would be appropriate for a high school classroom.

The same cannot be said for this antifracking screed, which is plainly and recklessly calculated to twist public opinion against a crucial B.C. industry.

While I wholeheartedly support your recent article, I would like to comment briefly on a statement by Mr. Don Emond.

“Emond said the average yearly salary in the business is about $110,000.”

It might have been for him – it sounds, since he drives production vehicles, like he’s a Teamster. However, the public should not get the impression that this represents the average yearly salary across the board.

I have been a professional actor for almost 37 years. I belong to all the unions. As an actor, unlike a member of a film crew, who might be on the set every day for the duration of the project, I am usually hired for a day or two, maybe – if I’m extremely lucky, a week or more. And that could be all I get for several months, depending on the roles available.

A principle actor’s rate (six lines or more) is roughly $634/day.

The rate for an actor with five lines or less is $418. Extras, (if they’re union, make $22.26 an hour, and if they’re non-union, minimum wage. On a TV series, unless it’s a recurring character, you can’t get hired back for many episodes. Nationally, most actors make substantially below $10,000 a year with most having to keep up a nonacting job to make ends meet. And that’s in good years.

Actors, because they are considered self-employed, are also not eligible for EI. The film industry in B.C. reached $1 billion in 1999. Since then, it has had an estimated 21 per cent yearly growth rate.

Until now. Virtually every province – and U.S. states – that has cut its film incentives has seen the industry, and its concomitant revenue, evaporate. The film industry is not on the brink of leaving. It’s on the verge of being driven out.

Silver Valley plan not working Editor, The News: Last week I participated in the second workshop of the Environmental Management Strategy, organized by the District of Maple Ridge.

I was impressed by the huge attendance (double the first meeting). It seems Maple Ridge residents are getting more concerned about their environment, as they should be. They and attending district staff are passionate about protecting the amazing natural resources that make Maple Ridge a special place.

The opening presentation by district staff, talked of the vision in the OCP to build a sustainable future that embraces our natural wonders. We then sat in groups and discussed the details of how to succeed in the goals of the OCP and the district’s Vision 2025. All useful and very necessary stuff with a lot of great ideas coming from the participants.

It, however, struck me during the event that what we were really doing was cosmetic surgery on a patient that is in desperate need of a triple bypass.

None of the things we were working on mean anything if when we continue to build unsustainable communities in Maple Ridge. The fact is, we have a policy of urban sprawl disguised as a sustainable progressive plan.

in the Vision 2025 statement are a fiction. She explained how new residents bought into the Silver Valley Area Plan because they believed in the plan and Vision 2025. They wanted a better place to bring up their kids and to live in a sustainable community.

But the plan has evolved into a pure marketing document and the reality of sustainability is now a distant dream.

I am not saying that was the intention.

I believe it was well intentioned, but the fact is it just isn’t working.

Silver Valley/Ridge does not contain one single service that does not involve driving three to eight kilometers: • no schools and no prospect for schools; • no sidewalks to schools; • no stores, not even a coffee shop within walking distance; The closest bus is one to three kilometres away.

There is only one road access to Silver Valley – a recipe for disaster.

Most of Silver Valley, according to MLS, has a dismal Walkscore of five out of a possible 100, which means totally car-dependent.

This is the very definition of a sprawl development, not a sustainable development.

In my business career, I have written and tried to implement many business plans. When the business plan starts to go wrong, as almost all business plans

do, the right course of action is not to blindly keep following the plan.

The right course is to examine why it is failing and to make changes.

This may involve fine tuning or a completely scrapping the plan.

The Silver Valley plan is going very wrong, but still we keep doubling down.

We need to step back, admit it is not working and do a complete review, with public input.

If it is determined that the plan cannot be made to work, then we need to stop, lick our wounds and move on.

We cannot, in good conscience, keep selling a myth to new homebuyers and the public.

If council truly wants to build a sustainable community, members need to go back to the drawing board and recognize the hard truth.

Malo added the Bacon shooting was one event in a “cascade of violence,” which began with the fatal shooting of Gurmit Dhak in October 2010 in a parking lot at Burnaby’s Metrotown shopping centre.

“There have been several homicides that have occurred through the last 18 months, with the flashpoint being that of Gurmit Dhak, that caused groups to align, groups that we had not seen align in the past, and a sustained conflict among those gangs,” Malo said.

Khun-Khun was critically injured in that shooting, and was also shot at in Surrey one month after Bacon’s killing.

Since Bacon’s death, several other high-profile gangsters have been killed or targeted, including Sandip Duhre, who was gunned down in a Vancouver restaurant in January 2012.

Sukh Dhak died in November 2012 after being shot in the lobby of the Executive Inn Hotel and Conference Centre in Burnaby. His bodyguard, Thomas Mantel, was also killed.

The recent arrests and murders of high-profile gangsters doesn’t mean gang activity will stop or even abate in B.C., warned police.

“It would be naive to think that the removal of some central figures in the recent rash of violent activity will mean the end of it,” said Assistant RCMP Commissioner Wayne Rideout, referring to police efforts as a sustained campaign against organized crime.

“This is going to go on for some time and we are doing everything we can to reduce that risk and to identity and arrest and disrupt those involved.”

Healthy Living Officials deny union claim of deleted patient reports Backlog of medical transcription requests a concern

Fraser Health is being accused of deleting some doctors’ voice-dictated reports for patients because of a huge backlog in medical transcription services.

The Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU) says it sometimes takes too long to get the audio files from physicians transcribed and Fraser Health has a policy of purging certain files that have been in the system more than 60 days.

The files that can be deleted are those that are “on hold” because the doctor failed to include certain information that’s needed before the transcription can be finished.

“It leaves people with incomplete medical charts,” said HEU spokesperson Margi Blamey.

She said the purging practice puts patient safety at risk.

A patient might have a pre-anesthetic consultation with the anesthesiologist, who would later dictate a report and send it for transcription. But Blamey said some of the reports never get transcribed in time.

“They may actually arrive at their surgery without the information being in their file,” Blamey said.

But health authority officials reject the union’s claims.

“There’s no risk of patients losing their information through a purging process,” said Yoel Robens-Paradise, executive director for Lower Mainland health information management.

He said the “on hold” dictations that are deleted make up a “fraction of a per cent” of the overall transcription volume and said it’s

Injured? In Pain?

The B.C. government’s proposal to create a new seniors’ advocate office is being criticized as a pre-election gesture to create a position that won’t have the authority to hold government accountable on problems faced by seniors.

Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid tabled legislation last week to create the new position. Unlike the

“frightening” and “unfortunate” that the union would suggest all backlogged recordings are at risk.

No files that can be processed are ever deleted until they’re transcribed, he said.

The accusation is the latest volley in the HEU’s fight against plans by Lower Mainland health authorities to contract out the 130 remaining unionized transcriptionists based in Vancouver, New Westminster and Abbotsford.

The move is expected to save $3 million per year on an annual transcription budget of $14 million.

About half the medical transcription in the region is already outsourced to Ontario-based Accentus, which uses home-based subcontractors.

Hospitals at UBC, Vancouver and Richmond had more than 16,500 backlogged reports awaiting transcription last week, according to the union.

Robens-Paradise said transcription work has been steadily growing and he conceded a significant backlog does exists.

“It’s not meeting my service level expectations,” he said, adding it can take a few weeks for some requests to be processed.

Doctors can prioritize transcriptions to make sure urgent ones are done fast.

Robens-Paradise predicts the backlog will be cleared this spring as work begins to shift to newly selected provider MModal.

The change will bring state-of-the-art voice recognition systems that should more than double the productivity of existing staff, he said.

The union has asked B.C.’s Information and Privacy Commissioner to investigate whether patient privacy can be assured if medical transcription is fully outsourced to a national network of home-based workers.

The health authorities deny there is any security or privacy risk to further privatization.

Auditor General and the Representative for Children and Youth, the office would not be independent, but would report to the health ministry.

MacDiarmid said the new seniors’ advocate will monitor seniors’ services and work with policy-makers, senior care providers and others to identify solutions to “systemic issues” such as those faced by families navigating the province’s system of seniors’ care.

Katrine Conroy, NDP critic for seniors, said it has been six years since the opposition first called for a new seniors’ watchdog. Conroy said she is disappointed that the proposed office not only has no set budget, it is not intended to investigate individual cases.

Premier Christy Clark appointed West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan to a new Minister of State for Seniors position last fall.

or Caity Babcock, it's a dream job, a reverie she's inches away from.

Music is a passion, says the 21-year-

old.

"It's such a large passion of mine, that If I had any job that involved music I would be on cloud 9," says Babcock, one of hundreds of Canadians vying for a spot on the 2013 MuchMusic VJ Search.

The Maple Ridge secondary grad is already well on her way to T.V. stardom.

She currently hosts two shows for AndPOP. com called Making Waves and Small Talk, that play on taxi cab monitors across Canada and

in selected fast-food restaurants.

"MuchMusic in particular has always struck me as the perfect place to work. They are fun, edgy, and different, and I like to think I am all of those things," says Babcock.

"Knowing music from all generations helps too," says Babcock.

"Growing up listening to Nirvana, the Bee Jees, and all my grandma's jazz music definitely raised me to be a music lover from the beginning."

Her AndPOP gig has landed her interviews with Ed Sheeran, rapper T-Mills, Classified and Young The Giant.

"When I interview bands and musicians, my main goal is to make an interview that is different," says Babcock. She often asks questions they have never been asked before.

This is the second time, Babcock has auditioned for the VJ search.

At 18, she made it to the top 16 contestants before being cut.

Since then, Babcock moved to Toronto to pursue her passion, and ending up landing an internship at MTV Canada.

After interning and making her own videos, AndPOP approached her with a job.

Online voting will help MuchMusic narrow down the field to 20 contestants, who will become the cast of a reality TV show that air in April.

Pitt juniors take sixth Valley title The Pitt Meadows Marauders junior boys basketball reclaimed the Fraser Valley championship on Saturday – a trophy they have kept on hand for the past decade.

The Marauders beat familiar foe Heritage Woods 48-46 in overtime the championship game on Saturday at Walnut Grove secondary.

“They did a fabulous job,” said coach Rich Goulet.

“It was like playing Ridge in the old days – nobody would give an inch, and everyone knew everyone else.”

The Coquitlam team pulled ahead 37-30 with two minutes left in regulation time, but Graham Smith, the Marauders’ talented centre, sparked a comeback to force a fifth frame. In the overtime, a big three-pointer

Since 2002 the Marauders have been to the Fraser Valley junior championship six times, and have won it every time.

Pitt beat Abbotsford Junior 66-31 on Friday, and the Yale Lions, also of Abbotsford 62-43 on Thursday.

In the third-place game, host Walnut Grove beat Semiahmoo 59-50.

The Marauders now move on to the provincial championships, which will be held March 7-9 at Vancouver College.

With some of the best performances of her basketball career, Kolbie Orum led the Maple Ridge Ramblers to the Triple A girls Fraser Valley championship on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

The Ramblers trailed the tournament’s top seeded Brookswood Bobcats by 12 points with five minutes left to play, but came back to win 73-67.

Orum, who is the national program and on her way to the NCAA next season to play with Oregon State, had 40 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Jane Grisley and Devan Cousins had 10 points each in the final.

The Ramblers beat the Riverside Rapids 73-57 in the semi-final, led by another stellar performance

by Orum. Her incredible stat line in that game: 46 points, 24 rebounds, and 72 per cent shooting.

Earlier tournament wins were 75-35 over Chilliwack and 73-34 over the MEI Eagles.

Flames facing elimination Game 5 in playoff series goes tonight

One more loss and the season ends for the Ridge Meadows Flames. The Junior B squad has slipped to a 3-1 deficit in their best-of-seven series against the Aldergrove Kodiaks.

Game 5 of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League series goes tonight (Wednesday) in Aldergrove.

The Kodiaks won 2-1 game in Maple Ridge on Friday, then blew the Flames out 9-2 on Saturday at Planet Ice. On Friday night, the Flames outshot the Kodiaks 26-16, but Adam Bartsch was the lone Flame to beat goalten-

“It was the best game we played of the series, but sometimes you just can’t score,” said Flames coach/GM Jamie Fiset.

The Flames had two good looks at open nets, but shot wide.

Special O swimmers medal at UBC The Ridge Meadows Special Olympics swim team medalled at the annual Ton Greenfield Memorial Swim Meet hosted by the Vancouver team at UBC on Feb. 24.

A total of eight Maple Ridge athletes, four male and four female, participated.

Barbara Keam, new to the team this year, impressed everyone with a third-place finish in the 25m freestyle event, clocked at 45.48 seconds, and a second place finish in the 25m breaststroke event, timed at 52.79 seconds.

Hard-working athlete Matthew Bueschkens posted a personal best in the 25m backstroke with a first place finish clocked at 24.99 seconds.

Curling club to host mixed doubles B.C.’s newest championship curling event is headed for Maple Ridge.

The Golden Ears Winter Club has been awarded the 2014 BC Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, which will take place from Jan. 16-19, 2014.

In fall 2012, Curl BC decided to establish a provincial championship in response to the Canadian Curling Association’s decision to hold a National Mixed Doubles trials to determine a Canadian champion in the discipline. The inaugural BC Mixed Doubles Championship was held at the North Shore Winter Club from Feb. 1-3, 2013.

“We had a couple of our long-time curlers go to this year’s event and the feedback that we got from them was fantastic, so we decided to go for it,” he said.

Teams are made up of one male and one female curler and the game is played over eight ends (instead of the usual 10).

“We’re going to start up a mixed doubles league on Thursdays and we hope that will generate interest in it,” said Mallett. “Sixteen teams entered last year so maybe we can get that to grow to 24.”

Mallett added that he hoped people from across the province would take an interest.

Kyle Jarrett took second place in the 25m breaststroke with a time of 34.81 and first place in the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:57.51. Kyle, who’s a natural sprinter, is learning to pace himself during longer races.

Marianne Borenko finished just out of the ribbons in her 25m freestyle and 25m backstroke events, timed at 49.53 and 1:02.19 respectively.

Nathan Baerg posted new personal bests in both events he swam, bringing home a first place ribbon for each.

He swam his 25m freestyle in 23.86 and his 25m backstroke in 31.94.

Nathan, Matthew, Jeramy and Kyle also came first in the 100m freestyle relay, which they completed in a time of 1:33.61.

Doris was welcomed peacefully into the arms of Jesus, surrounded by her family at McKenney Creek Hospice on February 23, 2013. She was born May 27, 1932 in Erickson, Manitoba. She moved to BC with her beloved husband Bill (predeceased in 2001), where they raised their 5 daughters: Laureen (Carlyle), Iris (Ned), Janice (Tom), Melanie (Craig) and CarolAnn (Blair). A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family takes comfort in knowing that there is a joyous reunion taking place in heaven, with her many family members and friends who have gone on before her.

Her family is so thankful for the numerous doctors and health care professionals who made it possible for Doris to enjoy an active last year, building long lasting memories with her family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Maple Ridge Alliance Church, 20399 Dewdney Trunk Road, on Thursday, February 28 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BC Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
