It started in September 2007, when two teens at a Nova Scotia high school stood up for a younger student. David Shepherd and Travis Price, both in Grade 12, heard about a Grade 9 student at their school who had been bullied and threatened for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of school.

They decided they should do something about it and bought 50 pink shirts and tank tops to wear to school the next day.

They also went online to round up support for their anti-bullying cause, which they dubbed a “sea of pink.”

It worked. The next day, dozens of students were outfitted with the discount shirts, but even better, hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some from head to toe.

The bullies were reportedly never heard from again.

This year, Feb. 27 is Pink Shirt Day in B.C. and other parts of Canada, an annual anti-bullying event that started after the now-famous 2007 “sea of pink” campaign.

The need for awareness and action against bullying remains as strong as ever say those involved in the pink event, including l d llocall radio d station CKNW, Black l k Press, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, and London Drugs, where people can buy the official pink shirts for 2013.

“Awareness of what bullying is and understanding that it hurts is important,” says Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver president and CEO Carolyn Tuckwell.

“It isn’t just a rite of passage. It doesn’t have to happen. And it’s relevant to everyone,, whether in school,, after school or in the workplace.”

According to www.bullyingcanada.ca, as many as 25 per cent of children in Grades 4 to 6 have been bullied and approximately one in 10 children have bullied others, while a 2004 study published in the Medical Journal of Pediatrics found that about one in seven Canadian children aged 111 to 16 are victims of o bullying.

It is important mportant to recognize what bull bullying is, and that s, it happens in many forms –

verbally, ally, socially, physically and online (cyber bullying), ullying), says Tuckwell.

“By wearing pink, people l show they’re making that commitment, to not let bullying happen,” she says.

The provincial government has taken steps to address bullying in recent years, including a Ministry of Education resource brochure for parents in 14 languages that can be found online at www. bced.gov.bc.ca/sco.

Bulletin earns nominations Outstanding work by Nanaimo News Bulletin employees has not gone unnoticed by the British Columbia Yukon Community Newspapers Association.

The News Bulletin earned four nominations in the BCYCNA Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards.

Rachel Stern’s Hornet happenings is among the top three finalists in the Sports Photo Award for a paper with more than 25,000 circulation, and Chris Bush is up for the Telus Spot News Photo Award in the same circulation category with his Hot spott photo.

Donna Blais, News Bulletin classifieds manager, is a finalist for the New Car Dealers Association of B.C. Classifieds Award, and ad representative Chantal Richard is up for the Metro Creative Graphics Ad Campaign Award collaborative for her Summer Savin’ Days ad.

Winners will be announced at the Ma Murray Awards gala April 20 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.

Library marks free reading All branches of Vancouver Island Regional Library are celebrating Freedom to Read Week until Saturday (March 2).

Terri Doughty, professor at Vancouver Island University, will be giving a presentation at the Nanaimo Wellington branch on Thursday (Feb. 28), 7-8 p.m., entitled Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book? Censorship and Children’s Literature.

Nanaimo will be awash in a sea of pink Wednesday (Feb. 27) as hundreds of people don the colour to take a stand against bullying for Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day started after two Nova Scotia high school boys encouraged their peers to wear pink to school one day in 2007 in support of a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied for wearing pink.

The two senior students bought 50 pink shirts and distributed them at school one morning.

Now it is observed across the country, with people dressing in pink to show their support for creating a society where there is no tolerance for bullying.

Students and teachers say bullying is still happening in local schools.

Members of Empathy NDSS, a student group formed at Nanaimo District Secondary School to shape the school into a safe place where students can be themselves, get reports from their peers about name calling, teasing and cyber bullying.

But members feel their efforts to raise awareness and the peer mentoring they do are making a difference.

Member Hannah Payne said some people are starting to realize how hurtful words can be – the group supported two students who felt they were being bullied and it turned out they were complaining about each other.

“Our goal is to challenge the mindset at our school and I think we’re making a difference,” she said.

Pink Shirt Day is a big deal for the group – members collected orders for pink shirts bearing the group’s name and they plan to do workshops with Grade 8 classes.

“It’s really a day to remind people our school doesn’t stand for bullying,” said Payne. “The point is see-

Susann Young, principal at Frank J. Ney Elementary School, said the school’s student council group is organizing a Pink Shirt Day assembly, during which students will act out the story of how the day came about.

To combat bullying at the school, Young is training Grades 5 and 6 students as playground buddies for the younger students. The buddies act as positive role models, involve students in activities and help them deal with conflicts.

“There’s definitely been some incidents over the years and it’s something that needs to be addressed,” said Young. “It’s an

And Pink Shirt Day is not just happening in schools.

The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association is inviting people wearing pink to a group photo shoot at noon at Diana Krall Plaza.

Then at noon, people can join Skaana Community Resources at the Woodgrove Centre water clock to walk the centre in support of this cause.

Nanaimo residents can buy T-shirts at London Drugs, proceeds of which support the CKNW Orphans’ Fund and the Boys and

Girls Clubs of B.C., and the Central Vancouver Island Boys and Girls Club is selling pins for $5 each at its Fifth Street location.

Linda Thomas, the organization’s manager of fundraising and community relations, said a staff member from the Nanaimo office came up with the idea for the pins.

“The pin is something you can wear year-round and you can put it on your purse or the pill of your jacket,” she said.

Coastal Community Credit Union employees have bought more than 370 of the pins to wear on that day.

Nanaimo Mounties arrest suspect in alleged sexual assault incident One man has been arrested for allegedly groping a woman near Vancouver Island University.

The sexual assault happened Thursday at about 11 a.m. when a 23-year-old university student was walking along a foot path near the Rotary Bowl running track

and noticed a man standing over a bicycle. As she passed by the man struck up a conversation and started walking with her. When he allegedly grabbed her buttocks and chest, she fled and reported the incident to campus security.

Base on a description provided by

the victim, police were able to find and arrest the suspect less than an hour later. Daniel Raymond Sasseville, 38, was charged with one count of sexual assault Friday and was being held in custody until his next court appearance Monday.

“This incident is being looked

at in relation to other sex assaults that were reported in the past year and no arrests were made,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “It is, however, too early in the investigation to say whether this incident is related to those or not.”

2013-3503 Sometime overnight on Feb. 10, PetSmart at 6950 Island Highway was broken into. The front door lock was drilled through and an office was entered. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

2013-3619 On Feb. 12, a trampoline in the backyard of a home in the 1700 block of Latimer Road was set on fire. The homeowner chased off three or four youth responsible for starting the fire.

The only description obtained of the suspects was a tall female with blonde hair.

2013-3676 On Feb. 12, a break and enter was reported at Island Terminal located at 900 Phoenix Way near Duke Point.

Suspects cut their way through a chain link fence then made off with some tools, flashlights and welding wire. Staff reported ATV quads have been seen in the area late at night and may be associated to the incident.

2013-3760 On Feb. 13, a teacher at Wellington Secondary School reported the driver’s window to his convertible BMW was smashed with an

unknown object. The vehicle was parked in the rear lot of the school and the incident most likely occurred between 3-4:30 p.m.

2013-3997 On Feb. 16, a bicycle locked outside London Drugs at Port Place shopping centre was stolen. The bike is a black and blue Rocky Mountain with a racing seat.

2013-4073 On Feb. 17 at approximately 12:50 p.m., a homeowner at 478 Hewgate St. came face-to-face with a male attempting to steal tools from his shed. When confronted, the thief dropped the items and took off running toward Bruce Avenue. The suspect is described as a white male, 5’10”, with dirty blonde hair and 20 to 25 years of age. He was wearing black jeans, a brown sweater, blue jacket and gloves.

2013-4084 Sometime between Feb. 15-17, a 3.6-metre Lund aluminum boat with a 9.9 horsepower Mercury outboard motor was stolen from moorage slip No. 12 at 10 Wharf St. The boat was secured to the wharf by a heavy duty cable and the motor was bolted to the boat.

“Marcus was friends with the accused and after the tragedy and the murder of the young girl, he was with the accused and in fact got involved with the knife that was believed to be used in this case and disposed of it,� he said. “Mr. Parry was named as a murderer in this matter and wasn’t even present when the young victim was killed, wasn’t even there. A projected funding shortfall of $5 million for next year’s budget has prompted Nanaimo school officials to claw back supplies and services budgets by $1 million this year.

With no mention of more money for district operating grants in the provincial budget tabled Tuesday, Phil Turin, the district’s secretary-treasurer, expects that cuts will be necessary to balance the books.

He said the district’s funding protection grant – given to districts with declining enrolment – is scheduled to decline by about $2 million, the $1.6-million surplus used to balance this year’s budget is gone and benefits are

expected to increase by more than $1 million, amongst other things.

To help with the situation, officials have cut about $1 million from supplies and services budgets across the district.

The list of cost saving measures include: waiting a period of time before replacing some personnel, holding off on some equipment replacements and postponing special projects.

“It’s tough to do a claw back at the end of the year, but we have to do it,” said Turin.

Combined with a $500,000 surplus carried over from last year and another $500,000 surplus from this year’s budget, the result of the unanticipated enrolment drop and switching over to a new accounting method, he hopes to finish the

year with $2 million to put toward next year’s budget.

“It’s better than going into a $5-million problem with nothing,” he said. “Schools are going to have to do more with less. There’s going to be less money out there to do things.”

Donna Reimer, district spokeswoman, said the district will know more when the Education Ministry announces operating grants on March 15, but it doesn’t appear likely that there will be any new money coming to the rescue. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo school officials are considering three changes to the traditional school calendar and want to hear from the public.

A public consultation process was launched Wednesday to gather feedback on the proposed changes, which are: organizing two inservice days for all employees, during which students would not attend class; starting school one hour later on Wednesdays to allow school staff to meet to discuss teaching strategies; and extending spring break next March by five days as a budget strategy to save about $400,000.

People can provide input on these strategies by completing an online survey at www.sd68.bc.ca, by e-mail at CalendarConsult@ sd68.bc.ca or by making a presentation at a special board meeting on March 13. Deadline for input is March 22 and trustees will make a decision on March 27.

Donna Reimer, district spokeswoman, said legislation changes mean that districts are responsible for setting school calendars for the first time this year – in previous years the Education Ministry issued a standard school calendar – and districts must now provide a minimum number of instruction hours instead of a minimum number of instruction days, which provides more flexibility.

The first two proposals are intended to boost student achievement levels.

The two in-service days on Sept.

3 and Jan. 31 – the first day of school, when students typically only attend for about an hour, and the last day of semester one for secondary students – would allow the district to bring all employees together to learn about and discuss district-wide strategies to improve student learning.

“It’s a good way to start the year with everybody getting the same information, having the same discussions,” said Reimer.

The second proposal allows for educators to meet at the school level every week to discuss how to improve student learning.

The final proposal is strictly a money-saving measure, said Reimer.

“We’re facing a $5-million shortfall potentially next year and that would save $400,000,” she said.

In 2011, a two-week spring break saved the district about $500,000, mostly in support staff wages, utilities and employee replacement costs, but trustees voted to keep the break at one week in 2012 and 2013 due to concerns the extra time off would create economic hardships for the district’s lowestpaid workers and for low-income families.

Reimer said interest in the proposed calendar changes is high so far.

“We have already had 427 people respond, and that’s in less than 24 hours,” she said. “We’re looking forward to getting input from anybody who wants to give it to us.”

Wetlands need cityy protection p The perception is we take care of our local water courses. That streams, rivers and wetlands, because they have a small sign saying so, are protected from development, toxins and other threats.

The reality is many fish-bearing streams and wetlands aren’t that much better off now than when environmental concerns went mainstream in the 1980s.

Current accepted practice across the province and country is to permit urban storm run-off to drain unfiltered into sensitive ecosystems and wetlands.

That means whenever it rains, whatever is on our roadways – oil, gas, paint, pesticides – gets flushed straight into the environment unchecked and eventually in the ocean.

Nanaimo is no different. When a development begins, one of the first acts is to direct run-off drainage into the nearest creek, ditch or stream.

What’s more, Nanaimo is one of few municipalities that doesn’t employ an environmental assessment officer, one who can oversee developments to ensure developers are adhering to already slack environmental protocol.

It’s an important omission at a time when senior government downloading results in municipalities taking on environmental responsibility.

However, environmental responsibility is one of the four pillars of the city’s strategic plan, a document intended to guide commitments and decisions for decades to come. Nowhere does the plan prioritize development.

Recently, city council admitted it struggles with decision-making when it comes to riparian areas simply because it doesn’t have the information required.

One only has to look at the size of the city’s development department compared to the size of its environment department to understand why.

If Nanaimo is serious about environmental responsibility, it must take a proactive rather than reactive approach to protecting environmental resources.

Consultation between the developers and nearby house owners would go a long way in reducing poorly-placed windows and other privacy infringements that can help ease the stress of the homeowner being affected while making the new house more appealing to potential buyers.

I headed down to the city’s planning department on a few occasions more than a year prior to construction to try and get a sense of what development we could expect. Initial plans suggested there would be three homes, not four, and the initial application said no trees would be cut down.

The plans changed several times, and no solid answers ever came forward from the city, even when house footings were poured five feet away from our property line.

I suspect the idea of the new zoning bylaw was to reduce urban sprawl. But when people suddenly find themselves surrounded by rapid, poorly-planned growth, places like Nanoose, Coombs, Lantzville and other rural areas become attractive, and the cycle of urban sprawl and further poor planning begins anew.

Infilling can work, but the city needs to create policy on how to inform homeowners how their neighbourhood is changing.

Gas prediction all hot air

To the Editor, Much has been written about the folly of predictions, and most of us remember Yogi Berra’s classic : “It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.”

While politicians try to impress the voters with their visions of what to expect in the future, most such visions end up as broken promises.

However, as our B.C. government could most probably be headed for the Opposition benches after the upcoming election, please allow me to play politician and make a prediction of my own.

Should Premier Christy Clark taste defeat in May, and is looking for employment, Prime Minister Stephen Harper would come to the rescue.

He rescued disgraced Premier Gordon Campbell by setting him up as High

Commissioner to the Court Of St. James’s; I foresee an appointment of Senator Christy Clark, who will be a perfect fit into Ottawa’s Red Chamber of Misfits.

Who knows, her visions through rose-coloured binoculars of a utopian B.C. may just come to pass in about 30 years time, just as she retires from the Senate at age 75.

Since taking over in Victoria two years ago, Clark has pathetically fumbled and stumbled in Campbell’s inept footprints; the latest straw she’s clutching at is bringing huge reserves of natural gas to market.

B.C. will form a prosperity fund eventually capable of paying for every citizens’ needs. The extraction process is by hydraulic fracturing of shale rock with a technology using high pressure water and chemicals to release the

natural gas that is at great depths.

This relatively new process is known as ‘fracking’; it has already been embraced in several parts of the world, notably in the U.S. where fracking produces huge volumes of natural gas, and greatly reduces that country’s dependence on other forms of energy.

Of course our B.C. politicians are far more adept at talking the talk than they are at walking the walk; with natural gas production spiraling in Poland, Australia and many other countries around the world, it will naturally result in huge reductions in the price of the commodity.

To put it quite bluntly, by the time B.C.’s natural gas comes on line for export to the world markets, it may well be too late.

Compost not a tourist attraction

To the Editor, On Feb. 17, I took my visitor from Sera Leon, West Africa to the Duke Point ferry terminal.

While passing down Duke Point, my passenger got troubled with sudden wave of stench that engulfed us. Disarray of rotting, decaying stink hit us like a club.

I explained a composting plant is located here. It welcomes and gives farewell to anyone using the ferry. In addition, depending on weather conditions, it suffocates anyone working or residing in about a 10-kilometre radius.

I clarified to my visitor that this was a city plan, apparently successful, to divert waste from Nanaimo’s landfill. He thought I was joking and commented that Sera Leon city garbage dumps are flourishing almost like ours during some seasons.

Though there is much less food waste overall.

On my drive back I was greeted with the same horrible stench.

I noticed rows of steaming, wet mixture of dark, soil-looking stuff and white plastic or paper chunks.

Previously the unsuspected tourists were welcomed only by the stink of logs bathing in the river estuary and an

occasional pulp mill’s whiff. The composting plant has added a new tourist attraction: agonizing awful stink.

According to a recent Regional District of Nanaimo publication, it is going to get even “better” with adding fast food restaurants waste collection to this chowder.

If industrial food waste composting was meant to increase stink levels and force citizens to keep home windows shut, it is doing exceedingly well.

Tax increase can only help To the Editor, I feel compelled to write as I have heard so many people commenting on the provincial budget introduced Feb.19.

I am normally the first person to look for ways to reduce taxes, especially for the under privileged in society. However, I fail to see how a two per cent increase on those earning more than $150 thousand and a one per cent increase to big business is going to hurt them or the province.

As B.C.’s economy gets better, and provincial revenues increase, these specific tax increases should be the first to go.

Time to move on from marina To the Editor, Re: Basin issue needs two-way communication, Letters, Feb. 23.

It really is time to wake up the Nanaimo waterfront by stepping back and looking at the potential.

The industrial docks and multiple ferry terminals that dot the waterfront of Nanaimo make no sense and is disorganized.

Pushing the current truck traffic ferry to its designed location at

Duke Point is the first step to reorganization.

Reshuffling the waterfront usage would solve all the problems.

Its current layout between the boat basin and the rail yard needs to be reshuffled and redeveloped to include affordable public launch, parking and dock access.

And Nanaimo’s ugly, redundant waterfront industrial dead zones need to go.

The Gabriola ferry terminal would be better served by moving it to the current industrial truck terminal across from Port Place shopping centre. The current ferry terminal location is a better place for docking the resident traffic that is currently using the boat basin.

Add to this conversation a suggestion of dredging the historically industrial polluted Millstone estuary and make it another useful area. The Millstone estuary is a diamond in the rough sitting behind fenced blackberry bushes. It currently serves no purpose but could have many tourism and recreational uses.

Start thinking outside of the boat basin box. The ink is dry on that deal, so it is time to move on, redevelop and build newer and better things.

arts Musical offers emotional journey

A

l o ve t r i a n g l e turns deadly in the musical tale Oklahoma.

Set at the turn of the century, in wide-open country where cattlemen and farmers are fighting over water rights, the musical follows the rivalry between Curley and Judd and their love of Laurey.

Oklahoma comes to the Port Theatre for two performances Saturday (March 2) 7:30 p.m. and Sunday (March 3) 2 p.m.

It takes the audience on a trip into both the best and darkest aspects of relationships.

The musical, presented

by The South Island Musical Theatre Society, offers an emotional journey. The love triangle is only one of the relationships that form the core of the musical.

“In Oklahoma there isn’t one star, all the leads are equally as powerful,” said Cathy Schmidt, president of the society.

Dave Ehle plays Judd in the production. It’s the first time he’s acted on stage.

“He does an amazing job.

He plays the character very well,” she said, adding that Judd has many emotions ranging from confused, to hurt, to angry.

His darkness is explored in many ways, including a dream sequence.

In one scene Laurey, played by Sarah Lane, falls asleep and enters a dream world. She starts by hav-

ing an “amazing dream” said Schmidt. Laurey is having a fantastic time with a person she believes to be Curley, played by Graham Brockley, but it changes and she is instead with Judd.

“Her dream turns into

a nightmare. It ends on a bit of a dark note,” said Schmidt. “Judd does everything wrong and hurts people and scares people.”

Emotions are heightened with the addition of a live orchestra, conducted by Hilary Coupland.

“The music itself is amazing. It truly is what live musical theatre is all about,” said Schmidt, about the addition of the orchestra instead of actors singing along to canned music.

She said at first it’s

challenging for both the actors and the orchestra to mesh.

During initial rehearsals the orchestra isn’t present but when it is brought in later Schmidt said you can see the impact in the actor’s eyes during those

first songs sung together.

Play examines the challenges of middle-aged dating

Val and Andy are looking for love.

They don’t want a casual fling, but something more meaningful – a connection that will lead to a lasting relationship.

Andy decides to put a personal ad in the newspaper, which Val answers. The two agree to meet on a blind date, but coax their two friends, Nina and Matt, to tag along for moral support.

The four, all in their mid-50s, are the central characters in Norm Foster’s comedy Looking.

The play opens Thursday (Feb. 28) at Cedar Community Hall, and is being presented by the Yellow

Point Drama Group.

Director Armand Dos Santos said the play is a mixture of genres.

“It’s written a bit like a British farce,” he said. “There are four scenes. There is not a lot of space between each scene. It is quite seamless.”

The play introduces the audience to the pitfalls of middle-aged dating and the challenges of finding someone and where to meet them. It stars Gordon MacInnis as Andy; Brian March as Matt; Moira Steele as Nina and Barbara Metcalf as Val. Dos Santos said it’s been great working with an experienced cast of actors.

The Yellow Point Drama Group is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The group formed in 1952 and produced its first play in the spring of 1953.

“It’s a bit of a miracle in some way, it’s in the middle of farmland,” said Dos Santos, adding the members manage to somehow keep the group going and people continue to come to the productions. He said one of the keys to the group’s longevity could be the style of theatre. The hall is set up in a cabaret style where people sit at tables rather than in rows.

The group is planning to host a celebration performance in April with a night of performances and historical displays. Dos Santos said details are still being worked

out and the group will make an announcement about the event closer to April.

Looking opens Thursday (Feb. 28). Opening night tickets are a special price, $12, and the show starts at 8 p.m. The play runs March 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16. Tickets are $17 adults/$12 youth. rnie passed away peacefully on February 7, 2013 at the age of 102 years, at Stanford Place in Parksville, BC. He was predeceased by his wife, Margery (nee Knight) in Parksville; his sister, Sadie; brothers, Frank (Ethel), Tom (Linda), and sister, Edith (Ted) Hubbard all in England.

Born in Walthamstow, England, Ernie grew up in the Highams Park area of London becoming a Boy Scout and meeting Baden Powell. At the age of 18 he apprenticed to the Hudson’s Bay Company and travelled to Canada, begininning as a clerk in Northern Ontario in the fur trade. He and his future wife, Margery met at Dinorwic, Ontario. After managing many posts across Northern Ontario, Ernie and Margery moved to BC and ďŹ nally retired on Vancouver Island from Kitimat, settling ďŹ rst at French Creek and then moving to Pym Street in Parksville.

Always interested in the outdoors, Ernie is remembered as an avid ďŹ sherman, in earlier years, along with camping and lake boating.

He and Margery were early members of the Arrowsmith Naturalists, participated in Brant counts and were always strongly interested in the environment around us.

Ernie and Margery were supporters of St. Anne’s St. Edmund’s Anglican Church in Parksville, with Ernie being a longtime member of the choir.

Ernie is lovingly remembered by his only son, Tom and daughter-in-law, Lorraine of Nanoose Bay, BC; granddaughters, Terri (Rundle) Williamson of Canmore, AB; Laurie (Bart) BatesFrymel of Vancouver, BC; Edie (Cliff) Richard of Edmonton, AB; also great-granddaughters, Serina and Kyla Williamson and Lexi and Alina Richard; additionally, nephews and nieces, Barrie Bates, Gaynor Foster, Graham Bates, Neil Hubbard, John Hubbard in England and overseas and Jane Closs and John Closs of Ontario, George Bell and Ian Bell of Alberta.

We thank the staff at Stanford Place in Parksville for their ongoing care and attention for Ernie.

In particular thanks to Vicki, Carla and Heather and all the many others who cared for and supported Ernie through these last few years.

We would also like to thank the Rev. Andrew Twiddy of St. Anne’s and St. Edmund’s Anglican Church for his ongoing support for the family.

Cremation has taken place. A service and celebration will be held July 15, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. At St. Anne’s St. Edmund’s Anglican Church, 407 Wembley Rd., Parksville when family and friends are best able to gather. In lieu of owers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be most appreciated.

Gold, Shirley J. (nee Piper) (later Shirley Hamilton) Nov. 6, 1926 – Feb. 15, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Shirley, on Friday, February 15, 2013, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Catherine; her first husband and the father of her children, James Seggie Gold; and her second husband, William Thomas Hamilton.

Shirley is survived by her four children, Robert (Linda), Anne (Donald MacMillan), Barbara (Paul) Peachey, and David (Tracey) and her six grandchildren, Erik, Jamie, Cassandra, Mark, Shannon, and Alan.

Shirley was the younger of two children born to Joseph and May Piper in Nanaimo. She spent her childhood mainly in Nanaimo with carefree summers at the family property at Piper’s Lagoon.

She became a teacher and taught in School District #68 her entire career. She married Jim Gold and raised four children at the family home on Windsor Avenue. Large family dinners were a favourite time, and she actively supported her children’s involvement in sports and various other activities. In later years, Shirley especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren and also enjoyed playing the piano, knitting, reading, and travelling. She was devoted to her family and will be dearly missed by many.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at First Memorial Funeral Services at 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo.

In lieu of owers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Shirley’s memory.

Predeceased by her husband, Ronald (1990); lovingly remembered by her 5 children “Marilyn (Ron) Simmons, David (Linda), Colleen (Hans) Vanderhorst, Janet (Mark) Winkelmans, Barbara (Ron) Breault; 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and her special friend “adopted daughter,�

Marlou Mullin. She also leaves her 2 sisters, Irene and Dorothy; and 5 brothers: Ivan, Ed, David, Dennis, Allan and their families.

A longtime resident of Ladysmith before moving to Parksville. Mom loved to walk with her family and with the many dogs she had adopted over the years.

Her love for people and her servant’s heart was demonstrated by her many hours of volunteer work at the Parksville SOS and soup kitchen. Her heart was always for the less fortunate whether people or animals.

Many thanks to the staff of Lakeside Gardens for their care of Mom over the past 5 years and all the nursing staff at Nanaimo General Hospital Pallitive Care.

In lieu of owers, donations can be made in her name to Parksville SPCA or the Parksville SOS. A Celebration of Life for Joan will be held at Maranatha Church 6553, Portsmouth Road, Nanaimo, BC on Saturday, March 2 at 1p.m.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Doreen Loretta Grant in Victoria’s Royal Jubilee Hospital on February 16, 2013. Her family is deeply appreciative of the efforts made by firemen, paramedics, doctors and nurses to resuscitate her following her sudden heart attack on February 13th.

Doreen was born on April 18, 1950 in Niagara Falls, Ontario and moved to Calgary in 1969 where she soon fell in love with both her husband and the outdoors. She became an enthusiastic camper, angler and hunter. Doreen then discovered Labrador Retrievers and fell in love yet again, training a succession of furry friends over her life. Doreen came to Nanaimo largely because of the climate. As well as an enthusiastic angler, she became an avid hiker, gardener and baker, always generous with both her production and knowledge. She loved the renewal of spring and her flowering bulbs have spread throughout much of the neighbourhood. Doreen worked part time as a clerk in Medical Imaging in NRGH for 25 years.

Her own health decline was gradual but sadly, seemingly relentless over the past year.

Doreen is predeceased by her father, Bill Kemp. Doreen’s immediate survivors are her husband, Bill Grant; mother, Dorothy Lorie; sisters, Diane Kemp, Debbie Kane, Patti Maracle, Pam McGowan; and brother, Bill Kemp Jr. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, most within the Niagara Falls region of Ontario. Other family includes, Esther Grant, Barbara Morck, Ronald Grant and Donald Grant. Doreen also has nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. In addition, Doreen all but adopted the beloved children Julia and Jeffrey Geiger, her “bright spot” through both pleasant and difficult times.

Flowers gratefully declined. Doreen would have much preferred a contribution to the Salvation Army, an organization to which she did not belong but tithed. A personal cremation will occur followed by a celebration honouring Doreen at a later date.

The Nanaimo Clippers have been good at righting the ship after a loss, and they did it again this past weekend.

The city’s B.C. Hockey League team won one of its two weekend games, losing 7-1 to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Friday at Frank Crane Arena, then defeating the Powell River Kings 5-2 the next night on the road.

Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach, said his team put together three good periods in Saturday’s road win.

“Way better focus, way better effort consistently towards our common team goals…” he said. “And we played harder.”

said. “That’s what we’re seeing quite a bit in our games lately. Our conditioning is kicking in and we’re playing well in the latter stages of most games.”

The previous night against Alberni, not much went right for Nanaimo

after Reid Sturos tied the game 1-1 midway through the first. Dun was pulled after the 4-1 goal early in the second period and Jayson Argue stopped 26 of 29 pucks the rest of the way as shots ended up 40-38 for the Bulldogs.

“We’re just trying to

smooth our game out a little bit…” Vandekamp said. “When we’re consistent with our game – we played such a strong team game [Saturday] night – it’s frustrating when we’re not doing that every game.

So that’s the focus right now.”

Mariners men make it to volleyball nationals

The VIU Mariners have made sure that their surprising season will last a little longer.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s volleyball team qualified to compete at nationals thanks to a silver-medal finish at the Pacific Wester n Athletic Association

championships in Cranbrook this past weekend. VIU’s men earned the trip to Welland, Ont., on the strength of a semifinal victory Friday over the Camosun Chargers, 22-25, 29-27, 25-23, 25-18.

“When you’ve got that win-or-gohome game and win it, it was a neat feeling,” said Abe Avender, VIU coach. “It was neat to see how we all came together at the end.”

The M’s dropped the first set, which the coach said was partly nerves and partly the fact that Camosun had won a quarter-final match the day before and were already warmed up, whereas VIU had had a bye.

“We found our way,” Avender said. “We passed really well and served quite solid. If we can serve and pass we can do a lot because we

can run such a great offence that way. Once we got our bearings that way it was pretty smooth.”

After that huge win, Saturday felt like a long day as the M’s awaited their night-time gold-medal match.

The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League club took a 3-0 lead in their bestof-seven quarter-final series on Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Kerry Park Islanders at Mill Bay. Wellington teams make provincials

DOVER BAY boys and girls extend seasons, as well.

The Wildcats have got their claws on a couple of berths to provincials. Wellington Secondary School’s senior AA boys and senior AA girls both advanced through this past weekend’s Island championships.

The Wildcats girls won the Island title, defeating St. Michael’s University School 63-52 on Saturday at SMUS. Welly’s boys were runnersup at Islands, falling 66-56

to Brentwood in Saturday’s final at the Wellington school gym.

Sara Simovic and Victoria Brown were top scorers for Wellington in the girls’ final.

In the boys’ final, Tyler Radelja led his team with 26 points and Ethan Schulz added 15.

“We would have liked to win the Islands because we haven’t done it for a long time at our school,” Radelja said. “We tried our best and we almost did it.”

Wellington advanced to the final thanks to a 77-65 win over Lambrick Park in the semis. Aaron Copley led his

team with 22 points in that one and Radelja had 19.

Also at the senior AA boys’ Islands, the Woodlands Eagles and Nanaimo District Islanders were eliminated after two losses each.

The Eagles boys lost 71-54 to Lambrick and then 82-72 to Shawnigan Lake. Aaron Halsall scored 29 points in the first game and Bryson Cox had 45 the next day.

The Islanders fell 57-35 to Mark Isfeld, then 95-45 to SMUS. Top scorers for ND in those games were Aidan Goodall with 16 and then Tyus Barfoot with 21.

Also this past weekend, the

Dover Bay Dolphins senior AAA girls hosted Island championships, where they placed third thanks to a 58-52 victory over Spectrum. Gabby Jeffrey led her team with 15 points in that game and McKenzie Nicks scored 13.

The Dolphins girls get to challenge Fraser Valley’s fifth seed for a berth at provincials.

That game is today (Feb. 26) at 3:30 p.m. at Oak Bay Secondary School in Victoria.

Dover’s senior AAA boys placed second at North Islands in Duncan, losing 70-62 to Cowichan on Saturday. Dover advances to the Island championships.
