Beachcomber Hot Tubs, Flaman Fitness & Culligan Water Celebrating 40 years in business

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Come down and visit our huge showroom. Just look for the Running Man.

Proudly serving the East Kootenays for 40 years, Culligan Cranbrook’s mission has been to deliver highquality water treatment products that will benefit every part of our customers’ lives. We hope to raise the qual-

ity of life by purifying its most essential element: water. For 26 years we have also been selling Beachcomber hot tubs and servicing all makes and models. We are proud to say that Beachcomber is Can-

ada’s number one selling hot tub. Beachcomber has been in business since 1978, when the first hot tub was handcrafted in a garage in White Rock B.C. Beachcomber hot tubs are now manufactured in Surrey, BC,

but still hand-crafted and it has grown into one of the biggest hot tub companies in the world. The Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, and United Kingdom are only a few of the countries that enjoy these great hot tubs. The last two years in a row Cranbrook has won ‘Store of the Year’ for Beachcomber world-wide for communities with a population of 50,000 and less. We have 16 hot tubs on our show room floor and have the best selection and prices in western Canada. We thrive on providing quality and professional service for our customers at reasonable rates. We launched the worlds first Hybrid Hot Tub in 2007 and have been recognized

as one of the worlds most energy hot tubs with our 12 key features and to help with our environment. We have power smart covers that not only meet the R 12 rating they exceed it; and our energy efficient hush pump is also very quiet. If you want to listen to music, no problem, we have a Quintessential Surround Sound Stereo system where the tub is the actual speaker. Ozone and UV lights also help with the sanitizing duties in the hot tub. We have seven different sanitizing systems to choose from on our shelves to ensure your needs are fully met. We even have a computerized lab that is here to help you with any water treatment

needs you may have at no charge. In February 2009 we took on a new business venture by starting the first fitness equipment store in the Kootenays. Flaman Fitness just celebrated the second anniversary and has become the home for the famous running man. Flaman Group of Companies is a franchise that celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2009 and is also Canada’s fastest growing fitness company. Flaman offers the best names in home and commercial exercise equipment, like Nautilus, Bow Flew, Schwinn, Freemotion, Progression and many more. There are two floors of fitness equipment with everything you could imagine for

fitness equipment. We also have Finnleo Far infrared saunas starting at $2595 for a single. Up to an eightperson Far infrared saunas, wet saunas and steam rooms are also available. Murray and Sherri Floyd are the local owners and have been since 2003. We employ a staff of 15 and are proud to say most of them have been here for 10 years or more; one has been here for over 20 years! Staff are the backbone of any good business, and we feel fortunate to have such a great staff to take care of our customers. Visit www. culligancranbrook.ca to see the many great products we offer.

A non-traditional job Auto mechanics, like many other typically male trades, has seen sparse representation by women up to now. But contrary to many young men, who often take up the trade for lack of other ideas, plenty of women are actually passionate about it. There are more than a few women who have proved their stuff in the military’s vehicle shops, for example. Nevertheless, for them and all the others like them, it takes a lot of courage and determination to be taken seriously, and they can encounter prejudice

even today. Women wanting to become auto mechanics are good problem solvers, and they are dynamic and tenacious as well. They love to take things apart and put them back together again, and the challenge of convincing male coworkers of their expertise is a motivation to excel. At the local auto service centre, women mechanics might have to make a special effort to reassure prejudiced clients that they are competent and efficient, but once their work speaks for itself, there is little to hold them back! This

will change with time, as more women put on the overalls and show the world that they are skilled with motors and electrical systems. Other skills required for mechanics are a mastery of car electronics, an analytical and technical mind, and an ability to communicate with clients about their automotive needs. Women who are passionate about this trade and who are ready for the challenge of proving themselves to be skilled will enjoy their work and meet with success.

Increasing leadership roles

NO JOINING FEE!

*Price reflects minimum 6 month commitment, billed monthly, only at participating locations.

When the United Nations signed its charter in San Francisco in 1945, it became the first international body to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right. Since that time, the UN has helped to create strategies for equality and establish norms and programs around the globe in order to improve women’s lives. Its fundamental principle is that women and girls everywhere have the right to live without discrimination, violence, or poverty and that gender equality is essential in order for them to flourish. International Women’s Day on March 8 is

the perfect occasion to review the status of women around the world. Women have been sidelined for far too long, in politics, in protection from war violence and domestic violence, and in access to public services. They must now be allowed to take their place as leaders and agents for change. Sadly, even in the Western world, women are still under-represented in many areas, such as in politics, in public and private sector research and development, and in executive boardrooms. Women tend to leave these fields during their professional lives because of

their sense of isolation in male-dominated surroundings and because of the difficulty of reconciling work with their roles as mothers. Adequate policies and programs must be put in place in order to increase recruitment, promotions, and the recognition of women’s leadership in these areas. Other measures, such as mentorship programs, affordable daycare, and decent maternity leave are also necessary for women in order to succeed professionally today.

2013 Kootenay Women’s Show A look at what the local CFUW is working on this year The Cranbrook Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women is continuing their mission on educating themselves and their surrounding communities on various issues in our society. As has been in the news for the last week, the BC Liberals have finally hired much needed Nurse Practitioners through BC including the East Kootenay. BC Council of the CFUW to which the Cranbrook Club belongs to, and is involved with, was part of the pressure put on the government to hire these much needed nurses.

At our provincial CFUW BC Council AGM in April 2012, a resolution was passed (below) which asks for a language change in the first step in educating the public, policy makers and agency staff that the use of the term “child pornography” does not reflect the current reality. The CFUW position is that images of this nature are representations of the crime of child sexual abuse, and our view is that “child pornography” should be replaced with the term “images of child sexual abuse”. Further, referring to words that accurately

resonate with its gravity and impact, that is, “images of child sexual abuse”, is important. There is data that indicates that the crimes of child exploitation occur in all communities, and that the Internet is the primary distributor of its evidence. We recommend this small but meaningful change as a significant step forward in educating the people in BC about this matter. Letters from all BC CFUW clubs have gone to police detachments to make them aware of our policy and rationale in hopes they will review it and consider support-

ing it when our Abbotsford Club presents a motion to endorse our policy at the upcoming Association of Chiefs of Police on February 21st, 2013. CFUW BC Council represents 2000 women graduates, associates and students members in 23 clubs in BC. We place our education and training at the service of our communities, take an interest and participate in public affairs, advocate for human rights and improvements to the status of women and girls. On that note, we encourage everyone to join One Billion Rising

to End Violence Against Women on Thursday, February 14th. A new twist to Valentine’s Day will see men and women around the world standing up, dancing and singing to say NO!! to gender based violence. Check it out at www.onebillionrising.org for information about events and other resources. The CFUW Cranbrook Club encourages women to take action. There is a “take Action Section” linked to our website at www.cfuwcranbrook.com which highlights federal legislation CFUW is tracking, ongoing and up-

The CFUW Cranbrook Club has recently donated two bursaries for the Practical Nursing Program at the College of the Rockies. The Canadian Federation of Women Cranbrook Club is very pleased to announce they are able, this year, to donate two more bursaries to the College of the Rockies. Financial and Scholarship Committee members, Barb Szalanski and Ann Rice, said, “The membership voted unanimously to give two five hundreddollar bursaries to the Licensed Practical Nursing Program for the year 2013-2014”. The small club of only eleven active members have been able to raise enough funds this year for a one time extra

donation to the women students at the College of the Rockies. The Practical Nursing program at the College of the Rockies is a two-year program. The eligibility requirements for one of these two bursaries will be presented to a mature female student (over 19 years of age) who is enrolled in full-time studies at the College of the Rockies in the Practical Nursing Program and continuing to a second year. Students will be selecting using the criteria based on a combination of demonstrated financial need and aca-

demic achievement. “We are very proud to be able to offer these two bursaries,” said Cathryn Henley, President of the CFUW Cranbrook Club. “We are continuing our mission of education here and worldwide in many of our projects, but being able to help the women at home is of utmost importance,” she added.

coming campaigns (like One Billion Rising) organized by a variety of organizations, and important international days, among other opportunities. Our clubs also raise a significant amount of money for scholarships and bursaries and other

charitable causes. The Cranbrook CFUW Club is adding to their annual scholarships to the College of the Rockies this year and will make an announcement soon as to how much and what programme we are helping out.

Iris That headache you feel may be a sign of computer eye strain

There isn’t much research on the long-term effects of computer use when it comes to your vision. Most of us can’t imagine what we did without our computers at work and in home, but it has only been 20 years since these devices have become such valuable tools, and too early to tell exactly how our eyes may be impacted. Too much of a good thing? Optometrists are seeing more and more patients who complain of headaches, eye aches, or just plain “tired eyes” after using computers for extended periods of time. What to do if you are experiencing computer eye strain? Here are a few tips to minimize the factors making your eyes uncomfortable: When you look at something up close like a computer, our eyes turn in instead of being pointed straight like when we are looking far away. If we let our eye muscles flex to turn our eyes in for hours on end on the computer, it can tire them out or make our distance vision blurry. To help, we have the “20/20” rule: after 20 minutes of

computer work, look far away (down the hall or outside a window) for at least 20 seconds before resuming our computer work. This can serve as a break for our eye muscles. When we look at the computer, we tend to stare and not blink as much as we normally do. This can cause dryness on the front of the eyes, which can sometimes lead to headaches, burning, or redness. For dry eye, there are many treatments including using artificial tears and taking omega-3 fish oil supplements. Computers emit a lot of high energy “blue” light. This can cause strain on our eyes as well. Nikon has come out with a new antireflective coating called the “See Coat Blue” that blocks high energy blue light and helps our eyes feel more relaxed when using the computer. Invest in a pair of glasses specifically designed for your computer and desk top environment. Home and Office lenses in a properly fitted frame will give you great vision for your near and mid-range

2013 Kootenay Women’s Show Remember, the fight is not over on International Women’s Day International Women’s Day is an important occasion to stop and think about women’s fight for gender equality, for better working conditions, and even for the right to vote and participate in political representation. This special day is all the more important as past challenges, which we

tend to believe were won and done with, continue to resurface in the political arena. Birth control, representation in decision making processes and in business management positions, and work and family life balance: so many obstacles are still relevant even after many decades of fight-

ing for women’s rights. That makes March 8 an important date in the collective search for solutions that will improve women’s conditions around the world. In 1977 the United Nations adopted a resolution inviting all countries to celebrate the rights of women.

It was at this moment that March 8 became International Women’s Day. Once again this year, communities around the world are organizing many activities around this theme. Non-profit organizations, women’s groups, unions, and community groups are planning walks, parties, and other

The aim of this event is to put an end to inequality between the sexes and to promote the rights of girls around the world. Today, more than ever, is the time to unite our voices so that girls can be assured of their right to an education and safety from domestic violence and forced sex labour.

2013 Kootenay Women’s Show A look a women politicians for International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day, held on March 8 every year, is an occasion to highlight the progress we’ve made in the fight for gender equality and the contribution to society made by women around the world. Among the advances in equity,

women’s right to vote is, without doubt, one of the most important. Although women didn’t even have the right to vote in North America at the beginning of the twentieth century, they now represent an important part of the electorate, one that

politicians no longer ignore. In fact, women voters have a major impact on the subjects debated during an electoral campaign as well as on the election results themselves. More and more women are also choosing careers in politics. Over the last

few years, many of them have been able to demonstrate that their leadership skills are equal, if not stronger, than their male colleagues. Think about Alison Redford, Christy Clark, Kathy Dunderdale, Elizabeth May, and Eva Aariak. These women have

made a place for themselves by promoting their ideas for a better world, a scenario that would have been unthinkable even a century ago. Even though complete equality between the sexes has yet to be reached, important progress now allows women, at least in North America, to vote and to be able to make political choices that correspond to their values and convictions. This in itself is a major advance for women’s rights. On this International Women’s Day, take the time to think of those who fought for women to become full citizens in society, enabling them to express their opinions by choosing the political candidates of their choice.

Premier Christy Clark.

Women do business differently than men, with more emphasis on networking. For many years business women had to sublimate their personalities and strive to think like men in order to be accepted in the business world. Nowadays, however, they are able to follow their own creative drive and be successful without having to betray their own values. This can be attributed to the efforts of past generations of successful female entrepreneurs. But what is meant exactly by “feminine” ways of doing business? A good example is networking and communicating. Indeed, in this era of globalization centred on knowledge and communications, business can no

longer be conducted as it used to be. Networking is vital in order to meet the new challenges facing entrepreneurs, both men and women. Women do not have the same way of exercising their power either. Unlike the pyramid type of hierarchy so representative of masculine values, women wield their power less authoritatively and give fewer orders, preferring to implement their power in a more indirect manner. In this way, when a conflict situation arises, many women will try to bring the parties closer together in order to find a win-win solution.

Kootenay Therapy Center Are we there yet??? – and other things to say when you can’t wait to go As women, we have often patiently packed up the car to venture out with young kids – maybe around town for the day, a trip to Creston, or a summer holiday in the car. Do you remember just getting going and then a little voice in the back seat groans out “Are we THERE yet? – I need to …....!!!”. Then there were the times that you wrapped your little precious one in layers of clothing to send them out to play in the snow. No sooner do they hit the cold then they run back in – only to anxiously tear their snow pants down to their ankles, grab themselves and plough down everything and everyone in their way – on a mission to the bathroom! Funny – yes? Did you ever think you might see the day when YOU were that child – now clothed in adult sized apparel?! We laugh because we can relate … We laugh because we’d otherwise cry … We laugh because we don’t know what else to do ….

See our presentation on the overactive and urgent bladder 12:30 pm

An urgent bladder, an overactive bladder and a leaking bladder are very common – The Canadian Continence Foundation estimates that 1.5 million Canadians are incontinent. Adult incontinence occurs in young and old BUT it is NOT A NORMAL PROCESS OF AGING. Incontinence, urgency and frequency of the bladder affects many aspects of life – work, social activities, recreation, travel, sex, quality of life and self- esteem. This treatable condition limits life choices and prevents sufferers from taking on new challenges. Childbirth, lifestyle, hormone changes, certain medical conditions and surgery are some events that can bring about these changes in the pelvic floor muscles that help to manage bowel and bladder function. Physiotherapy is a non-invasive treatment for incontinence, overactive bladder and urgency. Regardless of the cause, treatment of the pelvic floor muscles can help to successful manage symptoms. Alternate medical

interventions include medication, pessaries and surgery. Physiotherapy treatment focuses on rehabilitation of pelvic floor muscle control, strength, endurance and the ability to coordinate these aspects into everyday activities. Treatment is tailored to the individual patient. Treatment varies according to the type of symptoms and the individual’s unique needs. Those needs are determined through an extensive interview and physical exam of the spine, abdominals, extremities and the pelvic floor muscles. This assessment is performed by a physiotherapist with special postgraduate training in pelvic floor rehabilitation. Successful pelvic floor rehabilitation is central to conservative treatment of incontinence. Research has demonstrated that with only verbal and/or written instruction 35-50% of women are unable to correctly perform a pelvic floor muscle contraction (Kegel exercise), even when they think they have mastered the skill. In addition, not all people and conditions

Urgent and overactive bladders are common, as is the stress they can produce.

are appropriate for Kegels. Not only is correct pelvic floor function important to maintain continence, it is also required for pelvic organ support, to maintain correct posture and to perform pain-free low back

movements. Whatever the cause, with physiotherapy treatment, incontinence can often be improved, resolved or managed successfully.
