It’s late Tuesday afternoon, the sun is shining and it is a big day for Campbell who’s fortunate to be alive.

Back in December she was found by the roadside in Campbellton, injured and emaciated.

“Maybe she was feeding on road kill and got bumped or maybe she got bumped first by a car…anyway, she was very, very skinny,” says Westcott, an animal technician and educational outreach worker with the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS).

City council likes the idea of raising chickens at home but stopped just short of approving backyard poultry at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Coun. Ryan Mennie has heard from several people who want to legally grow their own food on their residential properties.

“I continue to hear support from the community and it’s great to see,” Mennie said.

Council chambers were full of poultry advocates there to support a presentation

by Morgan Ostler and Dylan Klassen.

The pair, part of a local agriculture suppor t g roup, asked

council to consider its request to allow residents to keep female chickens in their backyards – no matter where they live.

“There are on Vancouver Island, many, many communities that have approved the poultry issue,” Ostler said. “We’re the minority now in British Columbia of not having poultry in our backyard.

“As council knows, when the Sustainable Official Community Plan went through about two years ago it also included support for poultry, as well as bees, and the hope was by having poultry we could continue with our vision of eating closer to home.”

Klassen said there are several benefits to

raising chickens.

“It’s being in control of where your food is coming from and not being worried about the price, just being wor ried about the upkeep,” said Klassen who noted chickens will reduce the amount of pests in the soil, eliminating the need for pesticides.

On top of that, Ostler said raising chickens can help cut down on the amount of waste going into the landfill.

“We have a serious problem with the amount of g arden waste going up to the dump,” she said.

While Ostler and Klassen listed all the benefits of backyard poultry, some members of council still had concerns.

said he’s worried about complaints.

“One of my concerns would be staffing time and that would be dealing with complaints of the neighbours ranging anywhere from untidiness to people who aren’t properly looking after their chickens,” he said.

Ostler responded that those interested in raising chickens would be encouraged to take an educational program.

Still, Mayor Walter Jakeway is worried the SPCA could wind up having to deal with chickens abandoned by an owner who no longer wants them.

“I’m for chickens but I don’t think we should expect the SPCA to absorb orphan chickens – there will be

or phan chickens – they don’t have enough capacity in their terrible building they’ve got now to cope with or phan chickens,” Jakeway said. “I think the chicken community needs to find a way to deal with people who don’t know how to look after animals properly.”

Klassen said he’s

confident that with the proper education people will be responsible.

Jakeway also suggested that the chicken coops be subject to setbacks similar to what homeowners follow when building a house.

He said that way there would be “a buffer between neighbours who might not want to have chickens poking

Film focuses on Cortes Island logging dispute with Timberlands

A Vancouver filmmaker has turned his camera onto the ongoing battle between Cortes Islanders who want sustainable logging and the corporate interests which intend to harvest private lands.

“This is not an antilogging film,” states Daniel Pierce, during a phone interview from his Vancouver office.

It was a year ago when the 27-year-old Simon Fraser film grad was hired as videographer to cover the story on Cortes for a Vancouver publication.

It was a story that captivated Pierce who kept returning with his camera to shoot more images of the forest, to interview the local people involved, and to document last November’s confrontation between Islanders and Island Timberlands.

“It’s an ongoing story and I plan to follow it,” he says.

The film, “Heartwood: Forest Guardians of Cortes Island,” follows a group of Islanders who have a common vision of healthy forests and thriving communities.

One of the film’s subjects is Sabina Mense, a Cortes resident who’s fighting the corporate logging interests. “(Pierce) has been

very supportive and helpful,” she says.

“These stories need to come out…and our government is divesting itself of all responsibility.”

As for the standoff in late November, Island Timberlands loggers left the island, says Mense, but promised to return to log “their

land.” She says the two sides agreed to meet for further talks, but that never happened.

“Since then there’s been zero communication,” she says.

Mense adds there’s a group of residents who call themselves “Island Stance” and keep watch for the loggers’ return.

Call before you dig Firefighters were called to a gas line break Wednesday morning on Petersen Road where contractors had excavated the road in order to install services to a new condominium development. With the help of Fortis BC, the break was quickly fixed, but the stench of natural gas was particularly heavy around 16th Avenue and Maple Street. The fire department evacuated nearby businesses and residents for a short period while the break was fixed.

A Petersen Road resident has 30 days to remove “unsightly” debris and garbage from his property or else the city will do it at the owner’s expense.

At Tuesday’s meeting, council used its “remedial action tool” for the third time since October to order a property into compliance. In this case, a home at 555 Petersen Road is being cited for unsightly premises.

Bylaw enforcement officer Karl Read said t h e s eve n - h e c t a r e

property, which fronts Petersen and continues along Old Petersen, is full of garbage, building debris and an old mattress.

“There is an accumulation of discarded items including garbage in several areas of the property visible from Old Petersen Road,” Read said in a report to council.

“There is a utility trailer behind the dwelling full to overflowing with bags of garbage. In an area beside the house in front of a collapsed shed are piles of garbage and building

debris. Near to that are some standing sheds with open fronts containing discarded mattresses and a pile of burning debris.”

Read said there are two homes built on the property which are rented out.

The property owner, who does not live in Campbell River, was sent a letter from the city on last October requesting the garbage be removed. How-

ever, there’s been no response.

The property is one on a list of about 20 properties the city has ordered owners to clean up. Most owners complied. But in early October, remedial action was taken for homes on 7th and 8th avenues, as well as for five vacant lots on Oribi Drive.

on Hilchey Road, asking the owner to cut back a hedge on the corner of Alder and Hilchey which was blocking the view of motorists in that intersection.

In the same month, the owner of a property on South Alder Street was ordered to trim back overgrown blackberry bushes, weeds, alder and long grasses growing on the vacant lot.

Pursuant to section 227 of the Community Charter, Council for the City of Campbell River gives notice that Council proposes to adopt Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption Amendment Bylaw No 3501, 2013.

The reason for the bylaw is to expand the “Special Commercial Area” to promote greater revitalization of the downtown shown on the plan below (the “Special Commercial Area”) through the development and redevelopment of commercial buildings in City Centre Downtown (as defined in Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption WORK WITH US Bylaw No. 3392, 2009). The amount of the tax exemption that would be provided for the development or redevelopment of commercial buildings within the Special Commercial Area is 100% of the municipal property tax as a result of the land value improvement as determined by the British Columbia Assessment Authority. The maximum term of a tax exemption within the Special Commercial Area is 5 years.

Tourism strategy must be regional Efficiency is a buzzword around government these days, as it is in the private sector. In B.C. that scenario isn’t expected to end any time soon, regardless which party settles into office after the May provincial We say: Need to election.

With sluggish economies prompting with less people to spend less on travel, local tourism promoters must get even more creative in marketing the area to potential visitors.

Time will tell whether the Liberals’ creation of Destination B.C. is just pre-election window dressing or a serious effort to enhance the marketing efforts of the many regional and community destination marketing organizations in the province.

In the meantime, local and regional groups can take steps to improve their own lot by teaming with neighbouring organizations to market Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland better.

Rather than waiting for the post-2010 Olympics ripple to come, why not work together to remind the visitors who came to Vancouver and Whistler, but were focused on the Games, how great our region is?

At a time when gaining a share of people’s limited travel budgets is becoming more difficult and competitive, a consistent, joint action plan – perhaps one that casts the net farther – could attract new visitors and provide enough stimulus to help get everyone through the lean times.

We can’t expect government to lay all the groundwork for the industry and create a perfect environment for entrepreneurship.

That has to be done by businesspeople who see opportunities and work hard to create a place for themselves in an industry that continues to be one of B.C.’s biggest economic generators.

Think globally if you really want to make any change Re: Letter by Catherine Slater (“How can you in good conscience promote fossil fuels?” Mirror, Feb. 20) While I fully agree with the right to say what you want, I strongly suggest that you send your letters and protests to the countries that create the climate damage.

That’s right, I, too, have an opinion and my opinion is that the countries that use coal and oil to power their plants will continue to do so as long as their countrymen demand goods and electricity.

They will get their oil and coal from other countries willing to sell to them and those countries will make profits and create jobs for their people while we languish in our “holier than thou” attitude.

You will never convince anyone to change when all you want to complain to is your politicians.

It’s a global problem so you will have to start thinking that way if you really want to make any change.

Is it me or does anyone else think Campbell River deserves more from Rivercorp CEO Vic Goodman?

How about a lot more?

I try to remain positive about the potential a well-functioning economic development agency could do for this city…and then I sigh as Goodman’s latest e-mail hits the desk: “WooHoo!!!”

Pardon me? Did I just read that?

No, not just me, but just about every media outlet on the B.C. coast read this too. And not just measly “ink-stained wretches,” as our company lawyer so eloquently describes reporters.

Nope. Goodman’s response to the one of the biggest economic announcements to ever come Camp-

bell River’s way was also read by city, regional district, provincial and First Nations politicians, high-ranking civil servants from all levels of government, business leaders, and too many more to even count on the CC list.

The news, you will recall, is BC Hydro’s announcement that $940 million – that’s almost a billion, Vic – had been approved to facilitate a massive five-year project to replace the John Hart generating station.

Again, I give you the very first response from our city’s business and economic development ambassador: “WooHoo!!!”

Call me a stickler, but I think it should have been two words and there’s never any point to using more

than one exclamation mark.

Maybe it was just too late on that Friday afternoon when the announcement came in and Goodman, still drowsy from lunch, just hit the “reply all” key by accident. I doubt it, and it pains me even further to think that if it were an accident, we have Rivercorp CEO who struggles with the basics of simple e-mail.

To be fair, I know Vic is excited about new economic development, but why does he have to come off sounding like a 16-year-old who just scored his personal best on a video game? The English language does offer enough words to express excitement in a more formal manner.

So, giving Vic the benefit of the doubt, I visited the Rivercorp website

to see if he cared to elaborate.

Sigh.

The “latest news” is dated May 2012 and tells us the tourist season has begun. I do note on the website that Rivercorp has an impressive 2012 tourism guide...produced in Nanaimo, I should add.

Not much there, so I thought back to Goodman’s 2012 plan to hit the city up for $800,000 to hire more Rivercorp employees to do who-knows-what in an office that already employs seven people.

The city, faced with a $3.5-million shortfall, tossed Goodman’s plans in the recycling bin.

Now, a year later, we get “WooHoo,” which isn’t much from a guy earning $107,000 a year.

Clark’s preelection throne speech proposed a resource fund similar to Alberta’s Heritage Fund that would be reserved for debt reduction and major projects, rather than spent on programs, which tends to happen under the political pressure of fouryear election cycles.

The Kitimat-Prince Rupert region now has at least five proposed terminals, with investors including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil and state players from China and Korea.

All this is happening as shale gas is developed across the United States as well. As with oil, Canada is a captive of the U.S. market, and the flood of new gas supply has the North American price at rock bottom.

At least B.C. hopes it’s the bottom. Gas royalties passed forest income to the B.C. treasury many years ago, and now as the forest industry struggles to recover, the province faces tumbling revenues from gas.

Why would B.C.’s shale gas be seen as a priority for new global investment in LNG? For one thing, we’re a stable democratic country with a mature industry and competent regulation.

Secondly, the shipping advantage of the Kitimat and Prince Rupert ports to the Pacific Rim has finally been recognized internationally, as coal, forest products, grain and container traffic has climbed in recent years.

B.C. has another advantage that appears to be increasingly important. The shale gas deposits are deep, under a kilometre or more of solid rock, and most are in remote, sparsely inhabited locations.

That adds cost to the pipeline system, but it has a benefit. At the beginning of the year I predicted that the international protest movement that dishonestly targets Alberta oil would soon turn to demonizing natural gas.

That pseudo-scientific attack has begun, right here in B.C. I’ll have more on that in a subsequent column. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

History grows at the museum “History in B.C. grows profusely and luxuriantly, but with odd undergrowth,” observed historian J.M.S. Careless many years ago.

Back by popular demand for a fourth season, Campbell River’s provincial Wood Stove Exchange prog ram will help residents replace older wood stoves with wood, pellet or gas heating appliances certified to national standards.

Beginning March 1, the city will offer 36 $250 rebates on a first-come, first-served basis until April 30.

Since this program began in 2009, 114 wood stoves have been exchanged. With newer cleaner-burning appliances in place, a total of 8,240 kg of fine particulate air pollution is no longer in the airshed.

Conventional noncertified wood stoves have an average emission rate of 88.8 kg per burning season.

The BC Lung Association and the Provincial Health Officer note that the miniscule size of fine particulates makes them easily inhaled and allows them to penetrate deep in the airway and lungs.

Cpl. Smith, from Campbell River, where his mother Barbara still resides, joined the Air Reserves in 2003 as an Aviation Systems Technician, later transferred to the Regular Force in August 2005 and made a career change becoming a Flight Engineer in 2010.

He has been a member of 440 “Vampire” Transport Squadron in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories flying in CC-138 Twin Otters since September 2010.

“While our squadron was involved in a joint Canadian Forces exercise in the Northwest Territories we got the call that a family of hunters went missing. Our crew immediately went from a training exercise into

a real-time life and death search. The Twin Otter I was in had searched a large area which narrowed the search field down considerable when the Hercules aircraft joined the search. In the end the family was found after spending five days adrift at sea – alive but showing signs of hyperthermia.”

Now, Corporal Smith and members of 440 Squadron are taking part in a Canadian Forces winter exercise in Northern Ontario.

This is the first time that a Twin Otter has participated in a Trillium Response exercise providing cargo lift and personnel transport.

If so, consider spending time with a young person who needs a big buddy.

Currently, there are 64 boys in the Campbell River area who need a mentor.

The boys, ages 6-18, are all on the waitlist for KidStart, a volunteer-based mentoring

program offered by The John Howard Society of North Island (JHSNI).

This award-winning program connects vulnerable children and youth ages 6-18 with positive adult role models in Campbell River and the Comox Valley.

Mentors spend three hours per week with their young mentees, having fun and providing opportunities for their mentees to increase their selfconfidence.

“I do believe being with my mentee has helped with his self-esteem and confidence. We have had some great outings together and I look forward to seeing him every week,” Smythe said.

Getting the message out about bullying Pink Shirt Day is coming on Wednesday and Timberline Student Advocates are doing several things to support the Antibullying message.

Pink Shirt Day started as a protest against bullying incident at a Nova Scotia high school. Supporters wear pink to symbolize a stand against bullying.

Not all, says Nagle, but enough that real problems ensue that can have accidental consequences.

“We need to clear the air and learn how to handle all that stuff,” he says confidently.

Nagle, the owner of Out-

door Addictions in Campbellton, is well-known in the city for his super-positive attitude towards fitness.

From his gung-ho group workouts at the Sportsplex to his individual accomplishments as a triathlete, Nagle knows how to break a sweat.

And as a triathlete, he’s well-versed in the perils of running and cycling in busy urban areas. He also has a soft spot for drivers – he must – as his past career was selling cars.

Now he’s combining all

that knowledge to write a new column on cycling for the Campbell River Mirror.

“I want to target roadies and commuters and people going out for fitness,” he says.

His column will focus on great places to ride, safety, rules of the road, riding tips, and training advice for competition. So watch for his new column which begins on March 1.

“The key thing is we all have to share the road,” he says.

Campbell River Salmon Foundation pays whole shot for Pinks for the Pier KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A local organization has come forward to foot the entire bill of a program aimed at increasing the survival rate of pink salmon in Campbell River.

The Campbell River Salmon Foundation will pay $6,451 (minus other donations that may come along) to fund the Pinks for the Pier program, set to launch March 25 and continue until April 30.

This will be the third straight year the Salmon Foundation

has contributed to the costs of running the program.

“For the past several years the city and more recently, the Campbell River Salmon Foundation, has provided financial support for the Pinks for the Pier project,” said City Clerk Peter Wipper.

“Prior to 2011 the Wei Wai Kum First Nation supported the project by providing one out of every $10 generated

by Discovery Harbour boat launch.”

This year the Salmon Foundation will fill the void with a $1,014 payment in early March to

pay employee salaries for pen set-up at rearing locations and a second, $5,437 payment on April 1 to pay employee salaries for fry feeding, pen cleaning, fry release and pen takedown and cleaning.

The Pinks for the Pier project involves rearing 700,000 pink salmon from the Quinsam River in ocean net pens which Wipper said “increase early marine survival and helps to ‘home’ adults back to the rearing area which provides targeted fishing opportunities for residents and visiting anglers.”

Mayor Walter Jakeway said the program ensures that “in August there’s plentiful pink salmon for people to catch off the pier.”

How it works is the Quinsam River pink salmon are taken

from incubators at the hatchery and transported to an ocean rearing site near the downtown fishing pier.

The fry enter the pens at approximately .2 grams of weight and are raised to .5 grams

in two to three weeks.

Then they begin their migration to the open ocean.

The fry imprint on the rearing site, in this case near the pier, and the adult pinks from the release return in

the early summer in search of their home, which could lead to fishing oppor tunities those fishing off the pier. Fish returns from the project are expected in July and August 2014.

Bird rescuers get a charge out of BC Hydro BC Hydro boosted Mountainaire Avian Re s c u e S o c i e t y ’s (MARS) budget with a $14,000 contribution.

The funding came in two parts. In the fall of 2012, MARS submitted a video entry to BC Hydro’s Community Champions program, which recognizes nonprofit organizations that are making a positive difference through environmental leadership. Through public voting and judges’ selection MARS was one of five winners of the Community Champion pro g ram and awarded $10,000.

An additional $4,000

was provided as a donation to be directed towards the ongoing education programs MARS provide and upcoming Eaglefest, held at the Maritime Heritage Centre in Campbell River on Saturday.

BC Hydro’s involvement with MARS began in 1998 with a donation of a 4X4 vehicle to assist with wildlife rescue. Since this time, BC Hydro has contributed close to $60,000 to MARS. “Mars provides a wonderful service for bird rehabilitation in our community, and because of their tre-

mendous volunteer efforts, BC Hydro’s relationship with them goes back many years,” said BC Hydro’s Karla Louwers. “This has ranged from vehicle donations to annual donations, and for the eight consecutive year since its inception, a main sponsor for the Eagle Festival in Campbell River.”

“BC Hydro has been a valuable contributor to MARS,” said Maj Birch, senior wildlife rehabilitator and manager of MARS. For more information on MARS and Eaglefest visit their website at www.wingtips.org.

Drive Smart BC Where is Our Traffic 2X14 Enforcement?

Having spent 20 years in traffic enforcement I’m always curious if I will see any of it being done when I travel on our highways.

Unfortunately TYEE CHEV I have to say that I very rarely see a police vehicle in my travels, much less one stopped at the side of the road dealing with a driver. The erratic driver I saw this morning brought the question to mind “where’s a cop when you need one?”

At my last posting we typically had three dedicated traffic enforcement personnel on shift at any one time, assuming no one was taking time off, sick or in court. We three could be anywhere on literally hundreds of kilometers of highway within our patrol district. It’s not a surprise that you could drive and not meet up with one of use on any given day.

The Ministry of Justice’s documents show 396 dedicated provincial traffic policing positions in 2010. What isn’t shown is whether these positions are actually filled with officers who are fit for duty and on the job. If they are not full, this may explain why I’m not seeing active traffic enforcement around me when I drive.

When I consider that I am more likely to suffer financial loss, injury or death in the operation of my vehicle than I am through all other criminal causes combined my perceived lack of enforcement is distressing. Yes, I may just be in the wrong place at the wrong time to not see policing in action. Not seeing it on a continual basis cannot be a good thing.

A weekend to celebrate eagles M

ountainaire Avian Rescue Society is holding its 10th annual Eagle fest in Campbell River this weekend.

Once a year the society celebrates these magnificent birds, hoping to raise public awareness about their ever changing environment that ultimately impacts their future survival. “Haliaeetus leucocephalus” translated from Latin and Greek literally means “white headed sea eagle.”

Bald eagles are the largest local raptor and top of the food chain. They are significant indicators of the overall health of all our wildlife species, which are all interdependent on each other.

We are very fortunate in the Comox valley and Campbell River areas to have ideal conditions that support healthy eagle populations. Bald eagles need to live close to water and are especially at home along the shorelines

any kind of construction near these nest trees is forbidden during the nesting season. Usually eagles produce two eggs, four days apart, and incubation takes up to 36 days. Both parents will take turns although the female does most of the shifts and her mate will provide her with food.

Keeping an eye on easily visible nests can be really interesting and sometimes sad as the eagle nest cameras have shown. Survival does not come easy for any wildlife but eaglets are “sitting ducks” high atop the tree and are under constant threat from predators such as crows and ravens.

Fourteen weeks after hatching the eaglets are rid of their baby down and have grown their flight feathers making them ready to attempt their first try at flight. I have spent many an hour watching an eagle’s first flight which sometimes necessitates the parents trying to bribe

them from the nest with food rewards; once I watched as the parents systematically removed branches from the nest so the young bird had nowhere to perch, hence the need for annual nest repairs.

Once flight is achieved the first landing then becomes the task at hand and often it is a very inelegant performance as the eaglet crashes through the branches trying to close its wings at the same time as trying to grasp on to a branch.

MARS has already admitted nine bald eagles this year and the majority of these birds were immature and were still learning their hunting skills.

The Campbell River Women’s Centre is gearing up for its sixth annual Public Art Exhibition: “Celebrating Women 2013”, which will be held in the Tidemark Theatre Gallery February 20 to March 12.

“Celebrating Women” is a themed, non-juried art show that aims to celebrate women and to explore their many and varied connections to the world around them.

This year’s show will also, in a sub-theme, explore the concept

of “transformation”.

The show has been designed to be inclusive and accessible, so submissions in a wide variety of media and from artists of all ages and genders will be displayed.

The Centre is inviting artists and members of the greater community to come together to express and share their creative vision by submitting original art for this dynamic exhibition that not only celebrates women but also showcases the creativity of our com-

November 1, 1943 – February 16, 2013 After a brave struggle with ALS, Ruth passed away peacefully at her home.

Ruth was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan and moved to Campbell River in 1966 with her husband Mike, of 44 years, until his passing in 2010. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Ruth is survived by her daughters; Irene (Mike), Mary-Ann (Jim), Lorianne (JP), Kim (Ewan) and her nine grandchildren Mariah, Alisha, Shae, Billy, Callum, Angus, Ella, Emily and Kiera. Ruth is also survived by her siblings; Lorna (Henry), Irene (Gary), Cheryl and Paul.

We would like to thank Dr. R. Sutherland, Home Care (Barb and Marlene) and the Caregivers for all their support. We would also like to thank the ALS Society and the Red Cross who made it possible for Mom to remain at home.

John Lewis Ebert, a business owner, passionate steelheader and avid outdoorsman, died suddenly February 18, 2013.

John was a long time Campbell River resident who was an active volunteer in the community.

He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Beverly; his children, James, Catherine and Elizabeth(Vasey), son-in-law John Vasey and grandchildren Madison and Cooper.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

our Vancouver Island communities – Parksville, Port Alberni, Duncan and Campbell River – will host a Russian oldtimers’ hockey team for a four-game Goodwill Hockey Tour, April 5-9.

Port Alberni hockey enthusiast Jim Lawson has maintained a relationship with Russian interpreter Oleg Norchenko ever since Lawson and his son Shawn played host to Team Russia during the World Under-17 Hockey Championships in Port Alberni in 2009.

Lawson said he sent an invitation to Norchenko on behalf of his own oldtimers’ hockey team to come back to Port Alberni to play “and darned if they didn’t accept.”

The Tropic Ice Hockey team from

Tula, Russia, about 200 kilometres south of Moscow, boasts players from the ages of 23 (a goaltender and a defenceman) to 51.

The same four communities hosted teams during the World Under-17 Hockey Championships in 2009, forging a cooperative relationship that has carried over to this Goodwill Hockey Tour, Port Alberni organizer Ron Paulson said.

Strathcona Gardens facilities services manager Yves Bienvenu and fellow Campbell Riverite Les Ready both volunteered during the U17 tourney in 2009.

Bienvenu said the communities forged such a great relationship back then that when the opportunity came up to host the team from Tula in 2013, “how could we say no?”

The communities

are only now beginning to organize for the upcoming tour, which includes deciding how they will field their own oldtimers’ teams.

In Parksville, the Grumpy Old Men are hosting a tournament at the same time so the host team will play the Russians. In Port Alberni, an invitational team will be assembled.

“This is a goodwill tour. They’re coming here to play hockey,” Paulson said. “We want to win, but we don’t want to win at all costs.”

Campbell River organizers Bienvenu and Ready held a meeting Feb. 20 to start organizing their city’s participation in the Goodwill Hockey Tour.

Bienvenu said they would be making a call-out to ex-volunteers from the World Under-17 Hockey

Championship and other resources, including First Nations.

The Tropic Ice Hockey team will only be in Campbell River for about six hours before game time, so Bienvenu is looking for ways to showcase the community during a quick turn-around time.

No information was provided on how Campbell River would select their oldtimers’ hockey team.

Warriors earn berth after shootout C RYS A Wa r r i o r s lived up to their name Sunday in Ladysmith, prevailing 2-1 over the Mid-Isle Highlanders in a game that went to shoot-out to resolve.

Jack Crosby opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game, with a high ball from 20 yards that tucked neatly just below the crossbar and behind the Mid-Isle keeper, who apparently thought the ball would fall safely behind the net – 1-0 Warriors.

Seven minutes later,

defending in their 18-yard area, a handball foul was called against Warriors mid-fielder Tanner Kempe, while he was blocking a shot at close range with his shoulder. Mid-Isle forward Declan D’Eath was efficient in the penalty kick, selecting the left side just past warriors ‘keeper Brodie Comerford’s reach.

Both teams continued to challenge, but the Warrior’s forechecking in mid-field and superior passing eventually carried the

play, with Mid-Isle forays into the Warriors half occurring less often.

Mid-Isle’s best opportunity in the second half, a break-away, was foiled by keeper Gary Thiara, who charged out to slide-tackle the ball away from the onrushing attacker, while Warrior mid-fielder Jonah Shankar raced back to the Warrior’s goal line prepared to clear any shot on goal had Thiara’s gamble not worked.

The 70 minutes of

regulation time ended with shots on goal favoring the Warriors, although the score line was tied 1-1.

A brief break provided the chance for Wa r r i o r s c o a c h e s to encourage their players, then into 20 minutes of overtime play, in which neither team having any real chances. As overtime wound down, both coach’s thoughts turned to the shoot-out ahead.

The Tyees have played the Grizzlies well but haven’t quite climbed the mountain in terms of believing in themselves and their capabilities. Both teams played in Division 1 in the regular season.

JDF won the regular season with a record of 6 wins 4 losses and 2 ties while the Tyees finished tied for third at 6 wins and 6 losses.

The Grizzlies have two offensive threats who rival the Tyees’ Josh Coblenz and Sage Lim in their ability to read the play and each other to create high quality scoring chances. The Tyee defence of Matt Barker, Brendan Hoff, Dustin Kew, Olivia Knowles, Liam Rivett and Marcellus Wilson know what they’re up against and have shut them down at times. Now they need the forwards (Cory Bukauskas, Coblenz, Maddison Devlin, Tyler Dickson, Dawson Frank, Lim, Lukas Lund, Will McLean and Darian Swift) to continue to

forecheck and back-check. This team approach to defence will help to limit the scoring chances and allow goalies Dominik Bellefleur and Kyle Franceschini to clearly see the puck. The Tyees hope to pack our barn for this key game against a strong opponent.

Simple ways to save on your wedding According to a 2012 report in Brides magazine, the average Canadian couple spend slightly more than $23,000 on average for their big day. Clearly couples, can expect to invest a substantial amount of money for their weddings.

While many couples find the cost of a wedding is well worth it, others would like to find ways to save so their big day isn’t a budget-buster. Such savings aren’t always easy to come by, especially for couples with a very distinctive picture in mind of what their wedding should be. However, even couples strongly committed to a certain wedding style might change their minds once they realize how much such a dream wedding will cost. For those couples as well as couples who simply want to save some money, the following are a few ideas to avoid busting your budget without venturing too far from your dream wedding.

• Trim the guest list. The guest list is perhaps the easiest place to begin saving money. Many reception halls will charge by the head, so consider if you really need to invite 150 guests or if 100 will do. Such trimming can save you a substantial amount of money. For example, a banquet hall that charges $200 per guest will cost couples with a guest list of 150 $30,000 for the reception alone. Cutting that guest list to 100 reduces that cost by $10,000. When putting together the guest list, remove those candidates who would best be described as acquaintances. This can include coworkers with whom you don’t socialize, as well as old college friends to whom you rarely speak. Distant cousins you haven’t spoken to in years can also be cut from the list.

• Don’t go overboard on the gown.

Keep this in mind when shopping for a wedding dress, which can be made in the same design as the one you try on but with cheaper fabrics that are a fraction of the cost.

The disparity between gown costs in the United States and Canada should paint a good picture of how easily brides can save money on their gowns. According to a survey of wedding trends conducted by Weddingbells, an online resource for Canadian brides, the average Canadian bride in 2011 spent just under $1,800 on her wedding gown, while the average American bride spends roughly $1,100 on her gown. Though the reasons for that disparity are unclear, it’s safe to say there are savings to be had for brides who don’t want to break the bank paying for their wedding gowns.

• Get hitched in the off-season. Many couples prefer to get married sometime between the months of May through October. During these months, venues and vendors, including limousine services, caterers, photographers, musicians, and deejays, are more expensive. If you are willing to switch your wedding date to the off-season you can save a substantial amount of money. In addition, you likely won’t face as much competition for the best venues and vendors as you will during the peak wedding season.

• Trim your beverage budget. The bar tab at the end of the reception can be considerable, but there are ways to save money while ensuring your guests can still toast you and yours with a few libations. Rather than offering a full bar, limit the choices to beer and wine, which will be perfectly acceptable to most guests anyway. In addition, rather than paying the caterer for the wine, buy your own and you’ll save a considerable amount of money. You may have to pay the caterer a fee to pour the wine, but that fee is negligible compared to what you’d pay the company to provide the wine.

• Choose a buffet-style dinner over waiter service. Many guests will no doubt prefer a buffet-style dinner instead of waiter service, so take advantage of that and choose a more affordable buffet-style dinner that allows diners to choose their own entrees and side dishes.

When it comes to trimming wedding costs, couples will have to make compromises.

But those compromises don’t have to come at the cost of a beautiful and memorable event.

Tips for trying on wedding gowns Many brides-to-be look forward to the day when they visit a bridal salon and are able to try on gowns for the first time. There are certain tips that can make the day go much more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown.

• Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available.

• Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean.

• Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding.

• Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts.

• It’s best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing.

• It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes.
