Royals honour military at Canadian Forces Appreciation Night

The Victoria Royals look forward to honouring local military members and their families Saturday.

By Jennifer Blyth The Victoria Royals players, staff and fans will be showing their appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices of local military members during the second annual Military Appreciation Night Feb. 23. In addition to terrific hockey as the team takes on the Kelowna Rockets, special features include interactive displays in the concourse, a 50/50 draw hosted by the Military Family Resource Centre, and the always fun Chuck-A-Puck benefitting area Cadets. A highlight of the night is sure to be the opportunity to bid on game-worn jerseys right off the players’ backs in a live jersey auction following the game. (See more about this on the back page) The Victoria Royals have forged a strong connection with local military members, visiting the base earlier this year for a fun game. “CFB Esquimalt is excited to have been invited to be honoured and recognized during the Victoria Royals hockey game on Feb. 23,” says Capt. (N) Bob Auchterlonie, Commander, CFB Esquimalt. “Events like this highlight the strong relationship between the local defence team and the community. The Victoria Royals and the base have a strong history of working together, including their support of our annual charitable campaign hockey challenge and on-going CF Appreciation events.” For Royals with a military connection, the night is extra special. A veteran of last year’s inaugural event, 6’5” Royals defenceman Keegan Kanzig takes the opportunity to reflect on the work of his grandfather, who served in Germany in the 1950s as a member of the Queen’s Own Rifles. “I think it’s really important – it’s good to show your appreciation for what these men and women do. They put everything on the line for us and that’s something that can’t be forgotten,” Kanzig says. The event is a particularly special night on the calendar for assistant coach Ben Cooper, whose family tree boasts numerous military members. His great-grandfather was a brigadier general who served in the Boer War, and both the First and Second World Wars.

His grandfather, who lost two brothers in the Second World War, also served his country in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was part of the historic D-Day landing on the beaches of Normandy, and today has a street named after him in Holland after participating in that country’s liberation. Even Cooper’s father played a role in the conflict, surviving in a German Prisoner of War camp following service in North Africa. More than 60 years on, the sacrifices the Canadian military members make each and every day are just as appreciated. “The work they do is incredibly important and probably doesn’t get enough recognition,” Cooper says. The atmosphere at the Save-onFoods Arena promises to be exciting

At CFB Esquimalt earlier this season, Honourary Captain (N) Cedric Steele drops the puck for Base Commander Capt. (N) Bob Auchterlonie and Royals Ryan Gagnon and Brandon Fushimi. Saturday

night, he notes, recalling last year’s inaugural event, when the arena was filled with military members and their families and members repelled from the ceiling to the ice for thrilling puck drop. “It’s really special because I personally have a strong connection. It takes me back and makes me reflect about all the sacrifices they made,” Cooper says. It also serves to highlight the efforts of today’s service members. “How can you not support the night, with all they do?”

IN THE KNOW Keegan Kanzig looks forward to his second Canadian Forces Appreciation Night this Saturday.
