Do you have a sheltered, semi-shaded or even shaded area in your yard or on the balcony and are you looking for that one plant that will give you a spectacular display while being easy on the wallet?

Don’t despair, the perfect plant has just arrived!

Admittedly, right now begonia tubers don’t look like much. They are brown, wrinkled disks, almost resembling shriveled up prunes. With a bit of care, however they will sprout the most amazing plants and their vibrant blooms in all shades will flower all summer long.

Begonias are perfect for hanging baskets and raised containers. Some varieties can also be a colourful addition to a shade bed in the yard.

Begonias are not winter hardy in our growing zone as they cannot tolerate any exposure to frost. Once the growing season is over, however, you can dig up the tubers to keep for next year. Let them dry, layer them in peat moss or vermiculite and store them in a cool, dry spot. That way you can get many seasons of enjoyment out of the original tuber.

You should start the tubers indoors about six weeks before planting them outdoors. Make sure you get them right side up. The tuber’s top has an indentation and if you look carefully, you can see where last year’s fine little roots were growing at the bottom. To encourage sprouting, mist the tuber with water and place them in a warm, dark place.

Once you see activity, you can plant them indoors.

Fill a good size, clean pot with sterilized indoor potting soil, to about two inches from the rim.

Following recommendations, mix in a small amount of 16-10-10 controlled release fertilizer.

Place the tuber on top of the soil surface and gently press into the soil, cover with just enough soil to protect the tuber from light. Deep planting can kill this shallow-rooting plant and it makes it easier to see the buds coming out. Once the sprouts grow more, you can add a little bit more soil if needed.

Put the pots in a spot with indirect or diffused light, at a temperature of about 15ºC and keep the soil moist, but not too wet. Begonias can develop rot if water is pooling on the tuber or mildew if they have water on their foliage. When the initial flower buds begin to form, pinch them off. This is hard to do, but it maximizes the energy that goes to the plant. In the long run, this creates a stronger plant.

Once all danger of frost has passed, you can carefully transplant the begonias to their intended container or spot. You can make little wire crutches to support the shoots that come out of the soil. The blooms of some tuberous begonias are so abundant and heavy they cause the stems to droop and break, so a little support is beneficial.

Fertilizing with a diluted, balanced fertilizer every two weeks will help in producing best bloom and growth.

Begonias come in many shapes and sizes. There are pendula varieties, perfect for hanging baskets.

New this year are the novelty wave begonias, plants with cascading ‘waves’ of blooms. There is a ‘Golden Wave’, ‘Pink Wave’ and the exclusive ‘Champagne’ begonia - ensuring the perfect colour for every space.

The begonia is a stunning plant, sometimes it is also referred to as ‘summer shade queen’. Begonias will bloom all season with just a minimal effort needed to care for them. What they have not been known for up until now is a pleasing fragrance.

However, this changes with three novelty begonias ‘Angelique’ ‘Pink Delight’ and ‘Red Glory’. Not only will they be a feast for the eyes, they also fill your garden with a wonderful, sweet fragrance.

How could you go wrong with that?

So make begonia the queen of your shade garden this summer and enjoy their display for many seasons to come.

Avalanche claims life of German skier

On February 18, Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment was advised of a fatal avalanche accident that occurred east of Jumbo Mountain. A group of skiers were heli skiing with RK Heli ski company with a heli guide.

The area where three males were caught in an avalanche described as 150 meters wide, that ran down the mountain for approximately 300 meters.

Three adult males were caught up in the avalanche. A heli guide assisted by other skiers in the group using beacons, recovered one male buried who received non-life threatening injuries. A second male was partially buried was rescued.

The third male, identified as Gotz-Thilo Ries, aged 34, of Karlsehie, Germany, was found buried and unresponsive. This male was

immediately flown to Invermere Hospital by RK Heli ski helicopter where attempts to revive him failed.

The males, all friends from Germany, were on their sixth run of the day when this occurred.

Weather conditions at the time were reported to be good.

All skiers are trained to properly use a beacon before heading out on the ski adventure. Assistance by the guide resulted in the quick recovery of the one person that was buried and survived. The cause of death for the deceased is unknown at this time.

The friends skiing with the deceased assisted in notifying the next of kin in Germany.

The investigation is now led by the BC Coroners Services, media inquiries for further information are to be directed to the BC Coroners Services.

Skiers from around B.C., Alberta and the U.S. compete for cup

Over 100 competitors participated in the 2013 Teck Kootenay Cup cross-country series.

Submitted The final cross country ski races of the Teck Kootenay Cup Series were held at the beautiful Kimberley Nordic Center at Kimberley, B.C. on February 16 and 17, 2013.

There were 110 rac-

ers who competed in the exciting two person team sprint event on Saturday and 143 raced in the classic technique distance race on Sunday.

Teams and individuals came from all over the Kootenays, Northern U.S.A. and Alberta to take part in the event.

The stadium area was crowded with more than 100 spectators on Saturday and 150 on Sunday.

The Blackjack CrossCountry Ski Club from Rossland, BC won the Teck Kootenay Cup as a result of their great performances and num-

Second place went to the Kimberley Nordic Club and third place to the Nelson Nordic Ski Club. Also attending the event were teams from the Toby Creek Ski Club in Invermere, B.C., the Hills Nordic Ski Club

from the Slocan Valley, the Canmore Nordic Ski Club from Canmore, Alberta, the Glacier Nordic Ski Club from Missoula, Montana, the Banff Ski Runners from Banff, Alberta and the Foothills Nordic Ski Club from Calgary, Alberta. Rob McKeever, a former Olympian and National Ski Team member also participated in a 20 km classic ski race on Sunday.

The ages of the participants ranged from 4 to 65+ which just shows that cross-country skiing is truly a family sport for life.

The Valley Go-Go Sisters, affectionately known as “the Grannies,” have booked the Invermere Community Hall for Saturday, May 18th and they are now seeking donations.

“This is a great way to recycle your old items, and know that the money is being used for a good purpose,” said member Val James.

The Grannies want all craft supplies in useable condition, including but-

tons and ribbon, knitting needles, paper and paint, Christmas craft items, how-to books, magazines and patterns. The sale will offer a Quilter’s Corner, a Christmas Cache and much more.

To minimize their workload, please donate only items that are clean and ready to sell.

If donating yard goods, it would be helpful to measure the width and length of each piece, and pin a note to the fabric. The Grannies will accept all sizes of quilting cotton, but for other types of fabric, please donate a minimum size of one metre.

Square foot gardening Submitted With spring approaching, and with many persons ready to get into the garden, a “SquareFoot Gardening” Seminar is being held on Monday, February 25th at 7 p.m. at the Baynes Lake Hall.

This new approach to gardening take 1/2 the costs, 1/5 the space, 1/10 the water, 1/20 the seeds and 1/50 the work.

This gardening system is ideal for families, children and seniors. as there would be no more hoeing weeds, no more heavy digging, no more chemical fertilizers and no more wasting of seeds, and water. The gardens take only a four foot x four foot space but produces great yields in such a small space.

The garden can also be elevated to make it easier for seniors.

The seminar is taught by a certified teacher, Doug Lyon of Jaffray who is associated with the of the Square-Foot Gardening Foundation of Utah. Square-foot Gardening is a great way to introduce the whole family to the fun of gardening.

It started in September 2007, when two teens at a Nova Scotia high school stood up for a younger student. David Shepherd and Travis Price, both in Grade 12, heard about a Grade 9 student at their school who had been bullied and threatened for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of school.

They decided they should do something about it and bought 50 pink shirts and tank tops to wear to school the next day.

They also went online to round up support for their anti-bullying cause, which they dubbed a “sea of pink.”

It worked. The next day, dozens of students were outfitted with the discount shirts, but even better, hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some from head to toe.

The bullies were reportedly never heard from again.

This year, Feb. 27 is Pink Shirt Day in B.C. and other parts of Canada, an annual antibullying event that started after the nowfamous 2007 “sea of pink” campaign.

The need for awareness and action against bullying remains as strong as ever say those involved in the pink event, including local radio station CKNW, Black Press, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, and London Drugs, where people can buy the official pink shirts for 2013.

“Awareness of what bullying is and understanding that it hurts is important,” says Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver president and CEO Carolyn Tuckwell.

“It isn’t just a rite of passage. It doesn’t have to happen. And it’s relevant to everyone, whether in school, after school or in the workplace.”

According to www.bullyingcanada.ca,

as many as 25 per cent of children in Grades 4 to 6 have been bullied and approximately one in 10 children have bullied others, while a 2004 study published in the Medical Journal of Pediatrics found that about one in seven Canadian children aged 11 to 16 are victims of bullying.

It is important to recognize what bullying is, and that it happens in many forms – verbally, socially, physically and online

“By wearing pink, people show they’re making that commitment, to not let bullying happen,” she says.

Tuckwell and others emphasize that the pink shirt is secondary to raising awareness about bullying and getting people involved.

B.C. is no stranger to tragedy related to bullying. From Surrey’s 14-year-old Hamed Nastoh, who jumped off the Patullo Bridge and killed himself after leaving a note

behind blaming the constant bullying he endured at school, to Mission’s Dawn-Marie Wesley, 14, who committed suicide by hanging herself after relentless bullying, to Port Coquitlam’s Amanda Todd, 15, who killed herself after posting a video on YouTube talking about her experiences with cyber bullying, there are countless told and untold stories that remain horrific.

The provincial government has taken steps to address bullying in recent years, including a Ministry of Education resource brochure for parents in 14 languages that can be found online at www.bced.gov. bc.ca/sco.

Net proceeds benefit the CKNW Orphans Fund in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC. The Boys and Girls Clubs offer programs that foster self-esteem, social engagement, academic success, inclusion, acceptance, respect for self and others, and connection to community. The CKNW Orphans Fund is committed to enhancing the lives of children with physical, mental and social challenges living in BC communities. The fund includes children who are bullied under the scope of the fund’s work, because these children will need extra support for their development.

Sweeting: R. Gordon Feb. 5, 1949 - Feb. 16, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Gord Sweeting announce his passing away at Ft. Steele, BC. Gord leaves his loving wife, Fern, sons Trenton and Daniel; parents Art and Lorraine, and brother David (Marilyn).

He was predeceased by his sister Trudy. Gord was born in Gull Lake, Sask. After receiving his radio repair certificate he joined the Armed Forces. Later he joined the RCMP as a civilian member, in the capacity of a communication technician serving in Prince Rupert and East Kootenay Sub-Divisions.

Gord was heavily involved in Search and Rescue, loved the outdoors camping, and fishing. He relaxed making band boxes and doing scroll saw work. He was always so joyful and never saw his cup half empty even though MS caused him great struggles in life. He will be remembered for his hilarious humor and warm bright smile. He will be missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 9, 2013 at 1:30 pm, at the Cranbrook Alliance Church. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Gord are asked to consider making a donation to the East Kootenay MS Support Group, 401-2nd Street North, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3L4.

Jacob Smaldon May 4, 1976 – February 22, 2007 We do not need a special day to remember you, Jacob Kyle, but after all, it is your ‘Angel Day’.

The night we received the news that we had lost you in that terrible accident, I prayed for a peace that passes understanding and was granted that. The good Lord saw that I needed strength as it made me strong for all others that grieved so painfully and at times are still struggling. I know this would not be your wish for them. Help them to know you are okay, and to understand that we show our love for you by living our life to the fullest every second of every day. This should be our tribute to you, the lesson to live in the present and never to waste the gift of time, of family, and of love. The pain does not go away but we made room for it. You were a joy in our lives and I do not want anything, not even your death, to change that.

I still find my cheeks wet with tears when a smell or a song takes me unaware or ill-prepared, but I celebrate these moments and feel so close to you. These episodes wash over me, sometimes lingering longer than others, but then reality sets in, and I go take on my day knowing you were there. The pain does not go away but I make room for it.

Please watch over your little nephews, Charlie Jacob and Benjamin Jordan.

Dear Lord how you would have loved to tease them. Sometimes I think maybe you are. You would be so proud of everyone that loves you, Jake.

Going forward in life, raising a family, achieving goals, knowing that you are there holding our hands. Thank you for all the times you let us know you are beside us and happy. The dreams, the strange little coincidences that make us know it is you. The sunsets, the lone birds flying, circling over us for such long times, the fleeting feelings of warmth unexplained.

Please, please visit more often.

When I thought of the pictures going into the paper this year I wanted to add different ones. I wanted your baby picture or a photo of when you were 3 and 5 and 10 and 16. I wanted everyone to know that I lost my baby, my little boy, my teenager, my young adult, my son. I lost the chance to meet the person you would one day marry, your children, Christmases, birthdays.

I miss what could have been, what should have been. But alas, it is what it is and I cannot change that. What I can do is tell you that the day you were born was one of the happiest days of my life. It goes without saying that February 22, 2007 was the saddest day of my life. The angels cried but for a moment, and then took you in their arms and rejoiced.

A little bit of you lives in all of us.

What are your plans May 9th-12?

Mount Baker Grade 12 Students & DNA Biotechnology Processing Biology students at Mount Baker were exploring the concepts of biotechnology, by experimenting with gel electrophoresis. Gel electrophoresis is exploring the function and structure of DNA and RNA. It is the understanding of the task genes play, by inserting genes into existing cells and how DNA and RNA can be separated on the basis of size and charge. This experiment helps students develop skills with high-end laboratory equipment, lead to a wide variety of fields in biology, and broadens the understanding of each student.

Well, “As the good book says, when a poor man eats a chicken, one of them is sick”. So come and attend the latest Mt Baker Theatre production, Fiddler on the Roof. Based, on the prolific story of Tevye the dairy man who in 19th century Tsarist, Russia must adapt, while in the process of marrying off his three eldest daughters.

The team itself will include Mary Hamilton as the Director, Scott Martin as Musical Director, and Paul Kershaw as the set Designer. Former Graduate Student of Mt. Baker, David Popoff , along with Jacqueline Morrow will Choreograph. While Angus Leidtke (You Can’t Take it With You, Wedding Singer) leads an All-Star cast as Tevye.

The show will take place at the Key City Theatre May 9th – 11th at 7:30 pm and May 12th at 2:00 pm. Tickets will be $15.00 ($12.00 for students and seniors). For more information, please call the Key City Theatre Office at (250) 426-7006. We hope to see you there!
