Good old-fashioned campaigning and being vested in the community resulted in Lucas Banton being elected to the ACRD Alberni Clayoquot Regional District, he said.

Banton won Saturday’s byelection with 134 votes.

Mike McDowall took the next highest number of votes with 77.

“It’s only been a day and it’s a bit early yet. But the responsibility to the people of Cherry Creek is going to be my focus,” Banton said.

“And I take that responsibility very seriously.”

Bob Vandermolen, Wade Nicklin, Derek Wong and Graham Hughes also were runners up.

Banton replaces former director Glenn Wong, who died suddenly last September.

Going door to door in Cherry Creek and just listening went a long way in helping clinch the win, Banton said.

Gaelle Frey lobbied School District 70 trustees not to close a school in the Alberni Valley and now she’s on the other end of the decision making.

Frey was elected as a school board trustee last weekend after taking 206 out of 694 votes in a byelection. Her next nearest competitor—Nav Sharma— took 143 votes. Results were to be made official by the ACRD after the News’ press time.

Frey will sworn in at the end of the month.

“I’m surprised by the margin I won by.

I knew I had a lot of support but I didn’t think it was that much,” Frey said. “I appreciate everyone’s support and belief in me.”

Former trustee Kelly Hepp, Cathy Braiden and Mike McLeman were runners up in the byelection.

The school board position became vacant in September following the sudden death of longtime trustee Glenn Wong.

“A lot of people, parents and staff at Wood Elementary School know me, and they know I’m dedicated, hard working and that I never give up,” Frey said.

After three years advocating to keep schools open in the Alberni Valley, Gaelle Frey will see the picture from the other side of the school board table.

“And I like to think I have my finger on the pulse of what’s going on in schools.”

Now that she’s in, Frey says she’s going to familiarize herself with the obligations and responsibilities of a trustee.

She isn’t unfamiliar with public bodies, having been involved with community politics for some time.

She’s a board member on Alberni Valley Minor Soccer, is involved with Wood school’s PAC, and coaches three soccer teams.

Frey didn’t have a campaign platform per se during the election; she instead spoke consistently against school closure in the Alberni Valley.

“I don’t think that is going to go away and we need to work towards a positive solution,” she said.

She was also one of the first to speak against the idea of school closure when trustees first broached it three years ago.

Another critical issue Frey wants to devote time to is educational assistants in school. She volunteers to help students with math and English, and sees first hand how overwhelmed teachers are.

When Jim Lawson and his son Shawn agreed to be hosts for Team Russia during the World Under-17 Hockey Championship in Port Alberni in 2009, they had no idea what they were in for. What began as a rocky relationship has now translated into an international goodwill hockey tour.

Lawson said team members were wary of their hosts at first, thinking they were in place to make sure the team didn’t misbehave while in Canada. What they didn’t know was “Shawn and I were prepared to cause as much

And this April, he will bring a “veteran” team of players ranging in age from 23 to 51 to play four games on Vancouver Island.

The Tropic Ice Hockey team from Tula, Russia, will play in Parksville, Duncan and Campbell River in addition to Port Alberni from April 5–9.

The team will play an allstar team of oldtimers from Port Alberni on Saturday, April 6 at 6 p.m. at the AV Multiplex.

Tickets will be $5 and proceeds will go towards KidSport.

Players for Port Alberni’s team will be

invited to try out for the squad. Committee member Ron Paulson said they are looking for “character” players: “A combination of skill and goodwill,” he said.

“This is a goodwill tour.

They’re coming here to play hockey. We want to win, but we don’t want to win at all costs.”

Paulson said one of the highlights of the U17 tourney for him was the relationships forged with other Island communities.

Each community will have time to take visiting players around to showcase their respective regions.

Alberni District Secondary School civic studies students lobbied voters to get out to the polls in the last municipal election and now they want to do the same with the provincial one.

Dubbed “If voting doesn’t matter to you, then clothes shouldn’t either� the initiative seeks to increase voter turnout during the next provincial election in May. ADSS teacher Anne Ostwald’s Civic Studies 11 class has already undertaken several initiatives to launch the project.

They’ve written a letter outlining the plan to school district superintendents.

Students have also written to Port Alberni city council asking them to provide free transit on voting day so more voters can get to polls.

And in a lighthearted move, they’ve written to BC milk companies asking them to write

Cancer cruise draws closer The Canadian Cancer Society and Lady Rose Marine Services of Port Alberni have joined forces again in the battle against cancer.

During the month of March, participants will be able to travel for a reduced rate aboard the MV Frances Barkley down the scenic Alberni Inlet from Port Alberni to Bamfield.

The cost of return fare is $50 for adults for March, and $15 from each adult paid fare will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

(Fares are half price for children under 15 for all of March).

These scheduled return trips will take place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays to Bamfield only.

The ship will depart at 8 a.m. and return to the dock at 4 p.m.

by Dr. Carl Weber, BPE (Hon), DC Shift Happens I’ve been getting adjusted every second week since I was a kid. It’s something I literally grew up with, like any good health habit. I believe there is nothing (legal anyway) that can affect the entirety of a person more powerfully and quickly as a Chiropractic adjustment. To this day, after receiving my biweekly adjustment, I am struck by two things.

Firstly, by how free my movement is. It’s like gravity has been suspended. I feel lighter. My spine has been ‘flossed’ and despite a lifetime of aggressive sports habits, the steady, progressive and silent encroachment of spinal decay has been suspended once again. Secondly, my mind seems to receive a similar benefit. My thinking seems clearer and I feel more peaceful.

I always wondered why and how I could feel so quickly freshened by an adjustment. Especially since I am a hyper, no pain no gain, Type A person. But then years ago I stumbled on an article from the study of Psychoneuroimmunology that helped frame my observation. The article clearly explained that the nervous system is responsible for our experience of life. It literally serves as the interface between what goes on ‘out there’ and our reality ‘in here’. And that since our nervous system establishes our experience of life, any interference to it makes our experience of life less than ideal.

It makes me think of what a colleague once related to me. He explained that he wasn’t a natural student and by the 2nd year of Chiropractic school, he was ready to drop out. “The only thing that kept me going was the feeling of clarity I got every time my neck was adjusted. I just wanted to be able to do that for people.”

I am so fortunate to be able to help people become ‘lighter’, both physically and mentally. If people stick to their care plan, it becomes almost inevitable, across age groups.

It just goes to show you it’s never too late for shift to happen.

In the supermarket the other day I was asked what I had given up for Lent. This simple question brought me back to my first job as a teenager. I started in the office around this time of year and all the staff could talk about was what they were giving up for Lent. Smoking, swearing, eating or drinking too much were high on the list. That afternoon I asked the office manager what he was giving up. He told me that for him Lent wasn’t only about giving up but it was the season of reflection leading up to Easter. He said that we are invited to go on a Journey of Hope as we travel with Jesus to the cross, discovering along the way that Hope can be found even as we encounter some of life’s most difficult circumstances. What he told me that day helped me to shift the emphasis from “giving up something” to really “doing something positive” Let us pray for each other on this journey to Easter joy.

City councillors have shaved some projects and saved others in an effort to reduce the proposed residential tax rate in Port Alberni.

After the smoke cleared at Monday’s special budget meeting, councillors wrestled the tax rate down to 11.5 per cent.

They originally proposed a 13.7 per cent tax rate increase for 2013.

The rate is based on an average single family residence with an assessed valued of $183,200.

Several big ticket items were cut from the budget.

Council nixed

$300,000 earmarked for repair work to the McLean Mill dam and re-allocated the money to road repair instead. Council okayed $245,000 carried over from 2012 for dam safety work with any money left over to go to road repair.

City manager Ken Watson apprised council of a letter from provincial dam official John Baldwin.

The city is the dam owner, Baldwin said, “...and will be held responsible for any damages that might result from the failure of the licensed works.”

Baldwin asked to be notified of the city’s intentions regarding the dam within 30 days.

Also cut was $250,000 in upgrades to the Kitsuksis road bridge on Gertrude Street. Engineer Guy Cicon proposed that the bridge deck and walkways be widened.

The money was instead moved to the road construction budget.

Councillors also trimmed the Port Alberni Fire Department’s budget.

They nixed $41,000 for replacing a pickup truck, and made $2,600 in administrative savings.

Councillors requested a report on the pros and cons of not spending $40,0000 this year to revamp the fire department’s record management system, as well as a report on not

replacing its 1970s-era pumper truck.

Council voted against spending $27,000 for infrastructure to webcast city council meetings. Instead, it chose to spend $3,000 to rebroadcast Shaw channel 4 for Internet streaming.

Council’s paperless $8,000 initiative involving iPads for councillors, as well as $8,000 for computers for the engineering department will go ahead.

Another round of special meetings is tentatively slated for next Wednesday, Feb. 27, 6 p.m. in council chambers. Council will hold its regular public meeting on Monday, Feb. 25. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Water will be critical issue for Cherry Ck: Banton From / A3 “I told people what I thought about issues such as the fire department and water, and I asked them what their issues were,” he said. “I think people appreciated the personal touch. It was a good investment of time.”

Banton is no stranger to the workings of the ACRD. He’s already

involved with the water board. “People want to know that you’re vested in, in the community.

That really helped credibility-wise,” he said.

Water is going to be a critical issue in the district, he said. “People want to continue having their own water system and I think this is going to be a big issue,” he

said. Property use bylaws are another important issue on the horizon, he added.

A business analyst by trade, Banton works with governments and businesses, he said.

He is used to dealing with facts and figures, so says his work at the ACRD is cut out for him. The budget process and strategic planning will soon be

underway. And there’s reading to familiarize himself with issues.

“I’ve got a lot to get up to speed on,” he said.

“It feels great knowing that I was supported by the people who live around me,” he added.

Special Occasion Licences - Public Events If you plan to serve alcohol at a community event or public celebration in the City of Port Alberni, you need to obtain a Special Occasion (Public Event) Licence from the City. The City is now accepting applications for Special Occasion (Public Event) Licences for 2013.

An information session will be held on February 28, 2013 at 6 pm in the Committee Room at City Hall. This session will provide clarification of the Special Occasion (Public Event) Liquor Licence application process.

In order to be considered, applications must be submitted on a prescribed application form available at City Hall. Applications are to be submitted to the attention of Davina Hartwell, City Clerk, not later than 4:30 pm, Thursday, March 14th, 2013.

Special Occasion (Public Events) are recognized community or public celebrations or events conducted by bonafide organizations or societies.

As VIHA Central Vancouver Island medical health officer Dr. Paul Hasselback points out, “crime rates are often interrelated with addictions and/or a lack of adequate income supports.

Alberni also has more non-cannabis drug offenses (261 per 100,000) than VIHA (127), according to 2011 figures.

The 2011 health profile reveals Alberni’s serious crime rate is 16.1 per 1,000, higher than B.C. (13.5) and significantly higher than VIHA (6.5).

Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said more serious drug offenses here are mainly related to crack and cocaine addiction and trafficking, but added marijuana grow ops are routinely linked to more serious drug offenses and organized crime.

“These can all be linked back to addictions,” Allan said. “From streetlevel dealers all the way to complex organized crime rings.”

If addiction appears to be a problem for a suspect, police highlight it in their report to Crown to ensure judgment includes conditions such as treatment, curfews and abstaining from illegal substances and/or alcohol.

A key tool police can also employ is a Local Crisis Response Team, a group of professionals who are on-call to visit prisoners in cells.

They reach out to people in crisis, at a time when they may be most open to admitting they have a problem.

“This is a huge help,” Allan said.

“This isn’t the uniform who maybe wrestled with them in the back lot.”

Experts agree the overall health of this community is key to deterring negative outcomes like addictions and crime.

“The whole of the addictions issue is often related to lack of vitality in a community,” Dr. Hasselback explained.

He added that, “health services tend to get involved when there is already a problem.”

Tax boosts give NDP nod Province’s gas boom is real, all right The BC Liberal government’s plans to boost income taxes on business and highincome earners takes a page out of the NDP opposition’s plans, and makes sense.

The NDP plan had called for the corporate tax rate to go to 12 per cent, where it stood in 2008. The BC Liberals are boosting the corporate tax rate to 11 per cent on April 1.

The provincial government also will impose a higher personal income tax rate on individuals with incomes of $150,000 or more.

Their provincial income taxes will rise 2.1 per cent to a rate of 16.8 CP POOL PHOTO per cent, as of Jan. 1, 2014.

Both of these tax increases are necessary at this time, given the financial shackles the province is in. It has been running large deficits, at least partly because of much lower natural gas prices, which have affected government revenues.

The province is claiming it will balance the budget in 2013-14, largely because it plans to sell $800 million in surplus property despite a soft real estate market.

This budget is crafted with the May 14 election in mind, and while its revenue assumptions may be sound, as economist Tim O’Neill asserted on Monday, it is very much a political document.

It is designed to convince wavering voters that the BC Liberals are competent money managers. Over the course of the past 12 years, the Liberals have been sound money managers much of the time, but in recent years their record has been more mixed.

By adopting part of the NDP platform, the Liberals may have unintentionally telegraphed that the NDP too has good fiscal ideas.

ICTORIA – Whether Christy Clark’s government survives the May election or not, the natural gas “Prosperity Fund” idea floated in last week’s throne speech is a useful one.

B.C. is poised to join Alberta in the upper rank of energy producing jurisdictions, with an expanding network of natural gas collection, refining and processing into liquid (LNG) for export. Clark’s preelection throne speech proposed a resource fund similar to Alberta’s Heritage Fund that would be reserved for debt reduction and major projects, rather than spent on programs, which tends to happen under the political pressure of fouryear election cycles.

Opposition politicians and media commentators have dismissed this as

a pre-election stunt.

They note that the LNG industry in B.C. doesn’t exist yet, and may never produce the hundreds of billions of dollars projected over the next 30 years.

I returned for a visit to B.C.’s northeast earlier this month, and I can tell you the gas boom is real.

My parents homesteaded east of Dawson Creek near the Alberta border in 1962, and I recall when our farm was drilled for gas by Gulf Canada 40 years ago.

Many more gas wells have been drilled since then, and country roads have been widened and numbered for industrial traffic.

Hydraulic fracturing, already in use when our farm was drilled, has been combined with directional drilling to open up huge new supplies.

A farming community

called Montney is the latest hot play, yielding not only shale gas but petroleum liquids, which are valuable for diluting heavy oil among other things.

B.C. has never seen this kind of international investment interest before.

Initial projects have been joined by global players such as British Gas, and Mitsubishi, a key player in Japan’s replacement of its devastated nuclear power program.

Spectra Energy, which operates one of North America’s biggest gas processing plants at Fort Nelson and has another one under construction nearby, has begun work on a third plant near Dawson Creek.

Spectra and British Gas have also proposed the latest of several pipelines, to move all this gas to an

The Kitimat-Prince Rupert region now has at least five proposed terminals, with investors including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil and state players from China and Korea.

All this is happening as shale gas is developed across the United States as well.

As with oil, Canada is a captive of the U.S. market, and the flood of new gas supply has the North American price at rock bottom.

At least B.C. hopes it’s the bottom.

Gas royalties passed forest income to the B.C. treasury many years ago, and now as the forest industry struggles to recover, the province faces tumbling revenues from gas.

Why would B.C.’s shale gas be seen as a priority for new global investment in LNG? For one thing, we’re a stable democratic country with a mature industry and competent regulation.

Protesters’ focus turns to pipeline From / A8 Secondly, the shipping advantage of the Kitimat and Prince Rupert ports to the Pacific Rim has finally been recognized internationally, as coal, forest products, grain and container traffic has climbed in recent years.

B.C. has another advantage that appears to be increasingly important. The shale gas deposits are deep, under a kilometre or more of solid rock, and most are in remote, sparsely inhabited locations.

That adds cost to the pipeline system, but it has a benefit.

At the beginning of the year I predicted that the international protest movement that dishonestly targets Alberta oil would soon turn to demonizing natural gas.

That pseudoscientific attack has begun, right here in B.C. I’ll have more on that in a subsequent column.

Only two of six completed contracts have been legislated on teachers under provincial bargaining (Three were concluded with out strikes).

The first in 2002 was due to the illegal stripping of class size and composition clauses. It comes as a surprise and you blame the BCTF for not signing that year? The second in 2005 was over the same illegal contract stripping. Are we to assume that when the government acts illegally the BCTF should just say thank you and sign whatever is presented?

What the two legislated contracts had in common, is both happened under the “Fiberals”.

From his opinion piece “….have convinced the BCTF to stop misrepresenting costs.” It was in fact the BCPSEA that costed the benefit requests as if every teacher was going to use every benefit to the fullest every year.

Time to give up ‘niceties’ for taxes To the Editor, The guest column written by Peter Finch (Residents hit hard by tax rate increase, Feb. 14), and letters by Peter and Pat Rueschmann and Carole Walker (Feb. 14), make a resident reflect on the expectations we have in our mayor and councillors.

We the residents elected a group of citizens to assist with the management of

our community. I’m sure we would want our city run similar to our home.

Being responsible with finances is an important role and is the reason we have the mayor and council. In theory they are our voice in city hall. With saying that, sometimes people have to put the niceties on hold to finance the necessities.

Most people know that using the treasury

board’s guidelines to cost of living increases is two per cent per year. An increase of almost 20 per cent, all in taxes, sewer and water, cannot be justified.

I recently had a conversation with the mayor about considering options at the mill which is owned by Port Alberni and located in Beaufort District.

The mill has cost

the residence of Port Alberni millions over the years and I don’t understand why the residents should continue to put money into an investment that is in fact a liability.

The reply I received from the mayor was he supports the mill.

We need to see some leadership in city hall and some good solid decisions made.

As part of the series on awareness on homelessness issues, this article will focus on the definition of a tenancy agreement.

A tenancy agreement is a contract between a landlord and tenant.

The BC Residential Tenancy Act and the BC Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act are the laws governing tenancy agreements.

writing and it must contain terms that outline the rights and responsibilities of both parties, including standard terms that are required under the tenancy laws.

The standard terms cannot be omitted from a tenancy agreement.

A landlord is responsible for ensuring that any tenancy agreement entered into or renewed after July 1, 1996, complies in all respects with residential tenancy law including the applicable Regulation.

The Regulations state that standard terms, whether included or not in the written tenancy agreement, form part of the agreement.

Sometimes, potential tenants are surprised when a landlord wants to do a credit check and question whether this might be an invasion of privacy.

However, the BC Business Practices

and Consumer Protection Act allows a landlord to obtain a credit report for a person entering into or renewing a tenancy agreement, with the tenantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s written consent.

If the person does not consent to the landlord obtaining a credit report, the landlord may choose not to enter into a tenancy agreement with that person.

Similarly, a landlord may ask a tenant for his or her social insurance number if a social insurance number is necessary to prove the tenantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s identity or to conduct a credit check.

However, a landlord must not, as a condition of renting to a tenant, require a tenant to consent to the collection, use or disclosure of personal information beyond what is necessary to provide the service.

Reefer invades Port Alberni There’s reefer in town but we won’t be reading about a police takedown of a grow-op this weekend as a result of it.

Reefer Madness: The Musical is based on the 1936 cult classic of the same name, and it is set to blaze up the Capitol Theatre stage in February and March with a live band, singing, and dancing.

The show is for adult audiences only, with advisories for: satirical pokes at race, religion, violence, sexuality, drugs and rock and roll.

As the play opens, the audience learns of the new drug menace “Marihuana,” which threatens the American way of life.

Action must be taken immediately, before the Good Ol’ U.S.A. succumbs to the Demon Weed.

Jimmy Harper and Mary Lane are a lovable pair of teens who hold hands, sip hot cocoa and think pure thoughts while studying Shakespeare.

However, hold on to your hats, as we witness the seamier side of life at The

Reefer Den, populated by drug-addled Denizens of the Night.

We meet Mae, the den hostess, who is abused by her slick, pusher boyfriend Jack. She’d leave him, but Jack keeps her supplied with the marihuana she craves.

Finally, we visit the local Five-and-Dime store, a teen hangout where wholesome kids indulge in the risqué rhythms of swing-jazz” music, as performed by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie.

Stars coming to dinner The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society, owners of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, have invited former National Hockey League greats Marcel Dionne and Gerry James and Olympic swimmer Scott Dickens to headline the first annual sports banquet and auction on Thursday, Feb. 28.

The event will help the PAJHS fulfill its obligation to raise $300,000 in its first year. The society has raised $220,000 so far.

The Van Isle Ford Midget A Bulldogs are hosting the midget rep hockey provincials this spring, from March 16–22, and they’re looking for volunteers to help pull this B.C. championship off.

different regions, some as far away as Yukon Territory, will converge on the Alberni Valley for the tourney, spokesperson Roxanne Leyland said.

Although the Bulldogs and a handful of other teams have already clinched spots, the remaining teams won’t be known until early March.

The provincial event kicks off Alberni Valley Minor Hockey Association’s 50th anniversary, Leyland said. Up to 400 players, coaches, support staff and family members will be in the Alberni Valley for the week.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas. Arrangements are being made to

have a local host for each visiting team.

Since teams will only play one game per day, they will have a lot of free time to explore the community, Leyland said.

To keep up with the team’s plans for the provincials, Leyland has created a website at www.avhockey. net. Once the tourney

starts, live scores will be posted for each game, and more details about the participating teams will be available.

It started in September 2007, when two teens at a Nova Scotia high school stood up for a younger student. David Shepherd and Travis Price, both in Grade 12, heard about a Grade 9 student at their school who had been bullied and threatened for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of school.

They decided they should do something about it and bought 50 pink shirts and tank tops to wear to school the next day.

They also went online to round up support for their anti-bullying cause, which they dubbed a “sea of pink.”

It worked. The next day, dozens of students were outfitted with the discount shirts, but even better, hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some from head to toe.

The bullies were reportedly never heard from again.

This year, Feb. 27 is Pink Shirt Day in B.C. and other parts of Canada, an annual anti-bullying event that started after the now-famous 2007 “sea of pink” campaign.

The need for awareness and action against bullying remains as strong as ever say those involved in the pink event, including local radio station CKNW, Black Press, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, and London Drugs, where people can buy the official pink shirts for 2013.

“Awareness of what bullying is and understanding that it hurts is important,” says Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver president and CEO Carolyn Tuckwell.

“It isn’t just a rite of passage. It doesn’t have to happen. And it’s relevant to everyone, whether in school, after school or in the workplace.”

According to www.bullyingcanada.ca, as many as 25 per cent of children in Grades 4 to 6 have been bullied and approximately one in 10 children have bullied others, while a 2004 study published in the Medical Journal of Pediatrics found that about one in seven Canadian children aged 11 to 16 are victims of bullying.

It is important to recognize what bullying is, and that it happens in many forms –

If the Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior girls are going to advance past the AAA High School Girls’ Island Basketball Championships then it comes down to one important intangible — consistency.

The Armada are seeded third going into the eight-team championships being played in Nanaimo’s this weekend.

Other teams playing in the Islands include Oak Bay, Claremont, Mount Doug, Stelly’s, Spectrum, GP Vanier

and Dover Bay. The top two teams advance to the AAA BC Championships in March. The third place finisher will qualify to play a challenge match against a Lower Mainland team to advance.

“We’ve beaten most of the teams in the draw and been beaten by them too,” Armada assistant coach Greg Freethy said. “But if we play like we are capable of playing then I think the wildcard spot in third place is a reasonable goal.”

Alberni wrestlers win Islands The ADSS wrestling team has won the Island wrestling title for the 14th year in a row.

The ADSS Boys Wrestling Team won the Vancouver Island Secondary Wrestling Championship in

Ucluelet on the weekend for the 26th, Alberni Wrestling Director Tom McEvay said.

The ADSS boys finished with 119 points, more than double the 45 points accumulated by

second place Dover Bay of Nanaimo.

Timberline of Campbell River were third with 43 points.

Other top 10 teams included Queen of Angles, Reynolds, Ballenas, Oak Bay and Francis Kelsey and

Gulf Islands tied for 10th.

It wasn’t to be a clean sweep for the ADSS Girls Team. The Armada girls finished second to the host team from Ucluelet, who had 36 points.

Grade 11 twins Jesse and Jordan Wagner won the 51 kg and 54 kg weight classes respectively.

Their teammate Christian Anderson won the 90 kg class while Grade 12 wrestler Cole Walton returned from injury to win the 110 kg weight.

In the girls division, Grade 12 Jordon Bodnar won her fifth straight Island gold medal at 43 kg. The four-time BC champion will now lead the ADSS girls into the BC’s in Duncan.

Grade 10 wrestler Remi Wells continued her outstanding season with an Island gold at 57 kg.

Up and coming Grade 9 wrestler Micaela Dick surprised no one in winning the 69 kg weight class.

Six local wrestlers brought home silver

with 21 points.

Other teams finishing in the top 10 were Queen of Angles, Dover Bay, Quamichan, Francis Kelsey and EJ Dunn Middle School.

“The continued dominance of our ADSS wrestlers on the Island scene is truly a remarkable accomplishment,” McEvay said.

“There are few teams in any sport at any level who can show this type of legacy over such a long period of time.”

ADSS wrestlers won nine of the 29 weight classes contested at the Islands.

On the boys side, Grade 10 wrestler Dean Leyland won gold in the 70 kg division and won the Most Outstanding Male Wrestler award ADSS Grade 10 wrestler Nolan Badovinac took gold at 74 kg and is expected to compete for the provincial

medals and five captured bronze.

ADSS captain and Grade 12 wrestler Jonathan Spencer took second at 74 kg while fellow graduating wrestler Bailey Durning was second at 64 kg on the girls side.

Both Spencer and Durning are considered to be medal threats in Duncan.

Grade 10’s Lauren Barker, Michel Kurucz took slivers at 57 and 60 kg as did another young ADSS wrestler Julia McGowan at 69 kg. Grade 8 wrestler Trevor Barker of Dunn was second at 38 kg.

Bronze medalists for the ADSS boys were grade 12 Sheldon Haddad at 60 kg and grade 10 Eryk McKenzie (Cardinal) at 70 kg.

Wrestlers are now focusing their attention on the B.C.s, which are Feb. 28 to March 2 in Duncan.
