Fernie’s French speaking community increased by more than 40 last week when students from Montreal arrived for their part of the French exchange program at Fernie Secondary School. Fernie Secondary French Immersion grades 7, 8 and 9 take part in the exchange, which kicked off with a welcome dinner for families and school officials on Sunday evening. Fernie’s Mayor, Mary Giuliano, also attended.

Horror smash leaves driver in critical condition

T

he driver of a truck that collided with a jackknifed semi on Highway 3 Sunday night is in critical condition in hospital.

The collision happened about 3 km west of Sparwood near the

Olsen Overpass around 6 p.m.

Sunday night.

A semi travelling westbound jackknifed and collided with another semi travelling eastbound.

The driver of the eastbound semi suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Foothills hospital in Calgary. He is a man in his 60s

from the lower mainland. The other driver was not hurt.

East Kootenay traffic services are now trying to piece together what caused the incident, but Sgt. Will Thien from the Elk Valley RCMP said the road conditions were poor at the time.

there was blowing snow,” he said.

“Also the road was quite icy.”

Highway 3 was closed both ways for several hours for investigation and later re-opened to single lane alternating traffic at around 9 p.m.

It was not fully open until Monday morning.

Elementary kids get creative for Pink Shirt Day

ith this year’s Pink Shirt Day just around the corner, children at Isabella Dicken Elementary School had some tiedye fun last Thursday.

With a little help from his mom, grade three student Trey Hobb brought in all of the necessary supplies so that all of his classmates would have a pink shirt to wear on February 27.

Pink Shirt Day, aka Anti-Bullying Day, is held during the last Wednesday of February. Originally started as a protest

against a bullying incident at a Nova Scotia high school, students across Canada wear pink to take a stand against bullying.

Trey’s mom explained that after getting teased for wearing a home made pink shirt last year, Trey wanted to make sure that all of his classmates participated in Anti-Bullying Day, happening on February 27.

“We made his shirt with pink food colour-

ing because we didn’t have a pink shirt. He came to school on Pink Shirt Day, he took his jacket off, and the first thing that happened was he was bullied,” said Trish Crawshaw, Trey’s mom.

“I explained to Trey that luckily he could take that pink shirt off and his bullying worries were over, because he doesn’t have to wear that shirt again. But there are kids who are getting bullied all the time about anything;

being too fat, too skinny, wearing the wrong clothes, or having glasses or braces.

“So Trey and I took it upon ourselves to buy everybody the supplies to make a pink shirt.”

With plenty of white shirts, fabric dye, rubber gloves, and elastic bands at the ready, the kids in Trey’s grade three and four split class had a blast creating their very own pink shirts.

Sizzling their way to provincials

he Elk Valley Wild Bantam Rep hockey team was sizzling hot dogs at the weekend to raise money for a trip to Provincials in March.

The hot dog sale outside Overwaitea in Fernie on Saturday and Sunday meant the team, made up of kids from all over the Elk Valley will be getting a shot at the title at provincials March 16 to 23 in Houston, B.C.

Have a voice in the future of Fernie

T

he City of Fernie is revamping the Leisure Services Master Plan and it needs the help of Fernie residents.

The plan was last updated in 2004 and it guides the City’s decision making when it comes to recreational programs, services, and facilities.

Leisure services covers everything from the community centre, arena, and pool, to parks, playgrounds, and community trails.

The update process relies heavily on community input and will include public open houses, as well as interviews with key users of Fernie’s parks and facilities. The hope is that the revised plan will reflect the values and needs of the community, and provide the City with direction for managing and developing

Fernie’s leisure services over the next 10 years.

“We want an opportunity to engage residents to tell us what they desire as far as programs and services and facilities go,” said Cam Mertz, Director of Leisure Services.

“Based on the engagement that we have from them, it will allow us to start putting the pieces in place to evolve our programs, build new facilities, or make decisions about current facilities.”

The City has hired LEES and Associates, a landscape planning and design firm, to guide the development of the Master Plan. Currently gathering information and assessing the needs of the community, the company will be in Fernie on February 26 to meet with key community groups and organizations. They will then host a facilitated open house on February 27 to give residents the chance to have

their voices heard.

“That’s an opportunity for citizens to drop in and share their knowledge, or their desires and expectations, with the consultants,” remarked Mertz. “The public consultation part is mega important because I don’t want this document to sit on a shelf. I want it to be meaningful, I want it to have realistic expectations, so we can actually use it.”

LEES and Associates will take the feedback they receive at the open house, along with background information provided by the City, and bring back their initial recommendations at a second open house in the spring. A final document is expected to be presented to council by the end of June.

Mertz commented, “The plan might change, this is a living document, but at least we can communicate outwardly to the community, that this is what the City is planning.”

He went on to say, “The overall goal is to get some direction. If we do our consultation properly and really get what the people want, then we can put that into a plan. We get what the people desire, we get council to endorse that as the direction we want to go in, and then we get a plan that can work in that direction.”

lk Valley families enjoyed an afternoon of free swimming thanks to donations from Teck Coal.

In celebration of B.C.’s first ever Family Day,

Teck sponsored free public swims at the Fernie Aquatic Centre, Sparwood Pool and Leisure Centre, and Elkford Aquatic Centre on Friday.

With no school in session, residents in all three communities came out to swim, play, and spend an afternoon with family.

wo new doctors got a warm Fernie welcome on February 1.

A potluck dinner was held at the Seniors’ Centre to welcome a husband and wife team, Dr.

Deena Case and Dr. Mike Stuckey, who will be sharing one position.

The couple are from Australia and will be here for two years. They have two young sons, Arden and Isaac, and will be working out of the Sparling East Medical Centre. Both

will work in surgery and obstetrics and one will also practise anesthesiology, after being recruited by Interior Health and Dr. Michaels.

The two doctors said they are happy to be here and look forward to getting to know the community.

Fernie Child Care Society receives provincial funding

he Fernie Child Care Society has received an $11,600 Community Gaming Grant from the B.C. government.

“The Fernie Child Care Society is extremely thankful to be receiving the Community Gaming Grant,” said MariePierre Castonguay with the Fernie Child Care Society.

“The contribution will greatly assist the society in fulfilling its mandate of providing affordable, quality child care to the families of the Fernie area.”

Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett presented the grant to society board members and employees on February 8.

“We are happy to announce the allocation of the Community Gaming Grant funds to the Fernie Child Care Society,” stated Bennett. “This nonprofit society, formed by parents in the Fernie area, is a sustainable solution for young families to access quality day care.

Their work is integral to strengthening our community and we are proud to support them in any way we can.”

Community Gaming Grants give non-profit organizations the opportunity to apply for provincial gaming revenues. Throughout 2011 and 2012, the B.C. government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants to eligible community programs and services across the province.

Workshop tackles bullying

T

he Canadian Red Cross is holding a bullying prevention workshop in Fernie and Elkford.

The workshop, called ‘Beyond the Hurt,’ is for any parent, coach or adult who works with children and youth, to help develop a better understanding of the issues behind bullying and learn how to develop and implement successful prevention strategies.

“For too long, bullying has been dismissed as a normal, harmless part of growing up,” explained facilitator Jodie Parker. “But something that causes longterm misery and deeply scars so many lives cannot be dismissed as just ‘kid stuff.’ The solution isn’t simple but there are ways to help young people make better choices and stop the cruelty and the suffering.”

The six-hour workshop will be held on two evenings, Tuesday, February 26 and Thursday, February 28 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the College of the Rockies in Fernie.

It will be also be held on Saturday, March 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Elkford Community Conference Centre.

You might not think leisure services are important to you. You don’t use the pool or ice rink, so that’s all there is, isn’t it?

You might be surprised to realise that leisure services encompasses a whole lot more that just an arena and swimming pool.

Leisure services covers everything from the community centre, arena, and pool, to parks, playgrounds, and community trails.

Every time you catch a hockey game at the community centre, that is because of leisure services. Every time you take your dog to the park, pick up a book from the library, ride your bike on the trails, take your child to the playground, get some air at the mountain bike park, enjoy an hour of drop in curling, visit the seniors drop-in centre, or have a leisurely free game of disc golf, that is because of leisure services.

This community is so lucky to have such great facilities, and we should all be so proud of the thriving arts and culture scene, and all the sports and recreation options we have here, but the City needs to know that residents are getting what they want. The City of Fernie is in the process of revamping its leisure services plan, and needs community input to make sure they are giving residents what they need.

Perhaps you would like to see more signage on the trails, more places to let your dog off leash, another playground or a mini golf course. How about some art around town, maybe more murals or sculptures representing Fernie’s history?

Whatever you want to see in Fernie, there is no point just complaining to your friends because it’s not available to you, tell the City, and you just might actually get it!

There is an open house on February 27 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Seniors’ Drop-in Centre to give residents the chance to have their voices heard. Or just fill out the online survey at www.fernie.ca up until March 8. Sometimes it feels as if the needs of the community are not acknowledged, but this is a real opportunity to be heard, so make sure you take advantage of it and exercise your right to have a say in how your tax dollars are being spent. Fernie is already way ahead of many towns in terms of facilities, let’s keep it that way.

Say no to new subdivision

Letters to the Editor Blame owners, not breeds I would like to reply to the letter from Heather Dean in the issue of The Free Press entitled “Why choose a pit bull?”

I want to start by saying that I too was once against pit bulls, thinking that they were all “unpredictable dogs” who’s only purpose in life was to fight. Then I started seeing a woman who had a pit bull, and my opinion of them totally changed.

Emma the pit bull was five when I met her, at the physical prime of her life, and right up until she passed away last summer of cancer, I never saw her display signs of unprovoked aggression to either another dog or person. In fact, our biggest problem when walking Emma was other dogs approaching her, exactly like what happened to Heather Dean, and instigating an encounter with her. Ms. Dean might be surprised to learn that Emma was exactly like her Portuguese water dog, she would do anything to avoid a fight.

What I would really like Ms. Dean to consider is that the reason she had that unpleasant encounter in Elkford was not that she encountered a pit bull, but that she encountered an irresponsible dog owner. We have to negotiate irresponsible drivers every time we’re on the roads, and unfortunately irresponsible dog owners are also a part of our world.

The reason Ms. Dean knows what to expect from her dog is not that it is a Portuguese water dog, but rather that she is a responsible dog owner. If she had been fortunate enough to have met Emma she would have known a friendly, intelligent and obedient dog, who just happened to be a pit bull.

We are opposed to the proposed rezoning application by 0816595 BC Ltd. There is no consideration being given to the wildlife in the area. The property immediately across Dicken Road from White Spruce Park has been dedicated as an elk sanctuary. The elk have their calves in these bottom fields every year, then move up onto the hills. It makes no sense to build a subdivision in their already hindered corridor, it's bad enough there.

One of our new neighbours has left their garbage out on more than one occasion, and they have had a bear. They seemed to find it amusing with no regard to the extra habituation said bear now has to people and garbage. Now add 37 more potential neighbours.

Aside from the fact there is no proposed source of water for this possible subdivision, the strata fees which were mentioned in the letter from the RDEK will have to be implemented to deal with the sewage issues. "Strata Fees" and "affordable housing" do not belong in the same sentence. This property is bordered

by Baldrey Creek and Bean Creek, with Bean creek being the source of water for White Spruce Park. Even the thought of the remote possibility of contamination from sewage, be it from a leaking holding tank, or a pumping accident, needs to be taken into serious consideration.

The people who have actually lived here for any length of time can also tell you what the run off situation is here in the wet weather, with little springs in this hillside turning into torrents.

These springs have caused many issues in the trailer park in the past, and disturbing this hillside could potentially cause a slide.

The next issue is Dicken Road, a secondary road that is barely maintained. We are lucky to see a new layer of asphalt when the road is broken down to almost gravel, which is the situation now. People try to enjoy walking their dogs, riding their bikes, pushing their kids in strollers, jogging, horseback riding, with an already fairly heavy traffic stream. All the potential construction traffic and the increased traffic flow in general will definitely impact people's enjoyment of their laid back life style out here. It is also my

understanding that the roads and streets in this potential subdivision will be under the care of the Ministry of Transport (Mainroad). The maintenance of the streets in West Fernie or the road down into Cokato will attest to the MoT's ability to look after these outlying areas.

The reason there is no longer any affordable housing available in Fernie is because a lot of home owners did not like what they could see coming with the ski hill expansion, and they sold, and they sold high, and sold to a lot of seasonal people. There is still no guarantee that these proposed lots will be sold to locals, and in my mind, these lots will not be what many would consider to be affordable.

In addition, an Open House was held, where staff was available to answer any questions from the public. The Zoning Bylaw received its first two readings during the January 28, 2013 Regular Council meeting. Following the Public Hearing the bylaw will be submitted for the third reading and adoption on March 25, 2013.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering a new Official Community Plan and an extension of the South Country Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw to cover the Lake Koocanusa area located within Electoral Area B. The Official Community Plan is a long-term strategic planning document that will establish policies for land use in the Lake Koocanusa area. The Zoning Bylaw is a regulatory document that assists in limiting incompatible neighbouring land uses and provides certainty to land development opportunities.

Bylaw No. 2432 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Lake Koocanusa Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 2432, 2013”.

New funding program for the Elk Valley

brand new f u n d i n g program will support initiatives that provide socioeconomic benefits to the Elk Valley.

Columbia Basin Trust has committed $200,000 a year for the next three years to go towards the Elk Valley Community Directed Funds (EVCDF) program.

An EVCDF Committee will oversee the program and will be led by Chair Mary Giuliano.

The committee is made up of Regional District of East Kootenay Elk Valley Directors Lois Halko, Dean McKerracher, and Mike Sosnowski, along with community

members Dan Savage, Michael Hepher, Troy Tobin, and John Baher.

T

he Jaffray community has been rallying together to support their neighbour who needs a double lung transplant, raising over $18,000 to help her.

Kelly Guenther has Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a condition in which the body does not make enough of a protein that protects the lungs and liver from damage. The condition can lead to emphysema and liver disease. This causes Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, (COPD).

“It’s totally irreversible,” said Guenther. “I need a double lung transplant to save my life now.”

While she has had this condition for most of her life, Guenther spent many years being misdiagnosed before a doctor found the real cause of her illness seven years ago.

“They would tell me I had panic and anxiety. I told them they would panic too if they couldn’t breathe.”

The procedure will take place at the University Hospital in Edmonton. Guenther has just learned that she has been accepted for a six-week physiotherapy regimen that she must undergo to strengthen her body for the operation.

After the operation however, she will need to stay in Edmonton for three to six months to recover.

“They are very strict about having someone there with me,” said Guenther. “My husband’s work will accommodate him as much as they can, but he may have to leave from time to time.”

Because of the extended stay in Edmonton, Rick Lightburn, Guenther’s father, said that the family could use any funds possible to help. While the operation and anti-rejection drugs

Fernie’s castle is revealed after a long awaited makeover

A

well-known downtown Fernie building has been given new life.

The freshly renovated Castle on First has been redeveloped into condominiums and commercial space, and after years of construction, is finally ready to be revealed.

Originally built as a warehouse for the Coal Creek mine, the building went on to serve as a tire shop before falling into disrepair. Longtime Fernie resident Heiko Socher purchased the building in 2007 with the intention of giving it a complete overhaul.

“It was just a framed structure when I bought it,” said Socher. “It turned out

to be a much bigger project than I anticipated. It has taken two years longer than I thought it would.”

The original owner of what is now Fernie Alpine Resort, Socher has had a hand in many different projects that have helped the community evolve.

“I’ve been very involved in Fernie development, but this will be my last project I think,” he commented. “It’s been a challenge, but I’m happy we’re at the stage we’re at now.”

Socher hopes to sell the condos and has plans to lease out the commercial space once it is complete.

• In Elko at 3:47 p.m. there was a report of a possible dog poisoning. The complainant’s dog came back home shaking and vomiting. Blue liquid, which was suspected to be Drano, was seen in the area. Police are looking for information from the public on any tips about this incident.

• In Fernie at 8:48 p.m. an ‘open liquor in public’ ticket was issued.

• In Sparwood at 9:45 p.m. police attended to a domestic dispute. No criminal offence took place and the people involved were separated.

• In Sparwood at 9:46 p.m. a cell phone was reported stolen.

• In Sparwood at 9:52 p.m. there was a report of a pos-

• In Sparwood at 12:02 a.m. police responded to a domestic assault. One person was charged with assault.

• In Fernie at 3:37 a.m. police attended to a domestic dispute. Alcohol was involved.

• In Sparwood at 6:46 a.m. a residential panic alarm was received. Police attended and no one was home, but the door was unsecured.

• In Fernie at 7:31 a.m. a complainant reported a possible plane down.

Search and rescue, and the military were deployed. An extensive search was made in the area it was reported and nothing was found. There were no other reports from flight centres of any missing planes in the area.

In Fernie at 8:40 a.m. a motor vehicle was taken without the owner’s consent by a known family member.

Thursday January 17

• In Fernie at 5:58 p.m. a wallet was found and turned in.

• In Elkford at 6:56 p.m. a single motor vehicle accident occurred when a vehicle hit a deer.

Friday, January 18

• In Sparwood at 12:13 a.m. a train operator passed and witnessed a group

of youths climbing on railway equipment. When members attended the youths were gone.

• In Fernie at 8:57 a.m. harassment was reported.

• In Elkford at 11:30 a.m. there was a theft from three vehicles, all left unlocked.

• In Roosville at 12:26 p.m. there was a report of harassment between neighbours.

• In Elkford at 12:30 p.m. a vehicle was reported to have been gone through overnight. It was left unlocked, and loose change was missing.

• In Hosmer at 4:22 p.m. a missing person was reported.

Police investigated and it was a runaway teen.

She was located safe and sound.

• In Hosmer at 4:51 p.m. there was a report of a disturbance where two people were pushing each other onto the road.

Sports Riders playoff schedule

T

he Fernie Ghostriders head into the playoffs with a game against Columbia Valley Rockies in the first round. The Fernie Ghostriders ended the regular season with 74 points which earns the team first place in the Eddie Mountain Division and second in the KIJHL behind the Castlegar Rebels.

The Riders had a tough night with a 2-1 win Sunday for their final regular season game against the Columbia Valley Rockies. The Riders started the game with a shortened bench and Solecki in net but the game started getting ugly from the mid point of the first period. Solecki made 10 saves on 10 shots in the first but was replaced by backup Pierce Dushenko in the second and third periods. Pierce Dushenko had one of his best nights saving 21 of 22 shots with the one goal completely out of his reach.

By the end of the third period the Ghostriders only had 10 players rolling two lines with many players out mainly for precautionary reasons. The big turning point in the game was a five-minute penalty to Derek Chudyk, which the team played mostly in the Columbia Valley Rockies’ zone. This was done with big efforts by Tyler Gonzales and Connor Lowe-Wylde who seemed to dominate the play all night.

With two minutes left in the third period, still tied at one, Will Lightfoot got two minutes for high sticking which led to a bad giveaway from ex-Fernie Ghostriders’ top scorer Brendan Burge to Fernie's captain Josh McKissock for a shorthanded breakaway goal with less then four seconds left in the third period.

Playoffs start on Saturday, February 23 against Columbia Valley Rockies.

Falcons bury the competition

G

reat team and individual performances by Fernie Secondary skiers and snowboarders resulted in an overall win for both teams at the 2013 East Kootenay Alpine Zone Championships on February 13.

Over 125 young athletes from seven different schools in the region attended the event, competing in giant slalom and ski/board cross races. The Falcons took first place in four out of the six categories: girls ski team, boys ski team, girls

snowboard team, and girls snowboard team board cross.

A few standout Fernie competitors qualified for provincials with their individual performances; Montana Andreola came in second and Thea Gimard took third place for the girls’ giant slalom, with Kyle Maclean placing second for the boys’ giant slalom race.

The Fernie Falcons ski and snowboard teams are now switching gears and will spend the next few weeks hard at work practising and fundraising in preparation for the The FSS snowboard team. Fernie Mountain Film Festival returns

T

he Fernie Mountain Film Festival is back for another year. Taking place this weekend, the seventh annual small town festival will entertain audiences with adventure-filled films for three nights at the Fernie Community Centre.

The festivities kick off this evening with Local Film night, giving Elk Valley natives a chance to show off their movie making skills.

Friday night’s feature film is Congo: The Grand Inga Project.

Watch legendary kayaker Steve Fisher and his team battle the Congo River in their attempt to be the first explorers to survive the Inga Rapids. Hold on to your seat as they navigate Central Africa's maddening politics and face their worst fears while accomplishing the greatest challenge of their lives.

Come back on Saturday night to experience Where the Trail Ends.

The feature film tells the story of the world's top free-ride mountain bikers as they trek around the

world in search of the biggest and most insane terrain. The cast of colourful characters attempt the most progressive and ambitious mountain biking while learning about new cultures and pushing themselves to their limit.

Both Friday and Saturday evenings will also include a variety of short films, jam-packed with action and inspiration.

A new addition to this year’s festival is the Fernie Mountain Social.

With the community centre doors opening at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, festival goers are welcome to come early to enjoy tasty snacks from a variety of Fernie restaurants, as well as beverages from Fernie Brewing Company.

Keeping in mind audiences of all ages, be sure to bring the whole family to Saturday afternoon’s free Kid’s Fest, happening at 4 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Elementary students know science

ocky Mountain Elementary School (RMES) in Elkford held their annual science fair last month.

The primary science fair on January 23 featured eight projects and 10 students participated from grades 1, 2, and 3. The five top projects received a ribbon.

Winners were Eddie Chamberlain and Maria Jeneau (Water Fun), Declan Cook and Celtie-Rae Auger (Fancy Flowers), Quintin Haagsman (Lava Lamps), Samantha Sutton (Air Pressure) and Taylor Smith (Facts Chicken and Their Eggs).

The intermediate science fair on January 24 had 76 students participating.

There were 61 projects.

The top five of each class (grades 4,5, and 6) received ribbons.

Winners were Volcanoes (Levi

Rice) and Steam Engines (Justice Merrill and Hayley Kniert) in grade 4.

Bubblebrains (Vanessa Smithies), Processing Coal (Gracie Beranek and Annabelle Scott), Submarines (Michiel Spittael), Nessie-Fact or Fiction (Erin Mills) and Solar Energy (Tanner Barclay) in grade 5.

Parents were welcome to view all of the projects in the afternoon.

Awards were presented by Karen Alexander, Science Fair Coordinator and Ms. Shirley McGale, Principal of RMES. All participants are invited to attend the Regional Science Fair in Cranbrook next month.

Addressing the community’s concerns

T

here are only 21 months left in this council’s term to accomplish the many goals being established during strategic planning.

A lot of concerns have been expressed over snow removal.

Our workers do a good job with the equipment available.

It is difficult to clear the entire town in one day when a snow event happens. Weekends are more difficult as fewer workers are on duty due to financial constraints and lack of manpower. Making changes to allow for more workers and equipment means increasing the snow removal budget presently at half a million dollars.

It’s also difficult to do a good job of clearing the streets when vehicles are parked. Please con-

tact the City to find out when alternate days are for moving vehicles to the different side of the street for snow clearing.

There has been a lot of negative comment regarding the small lot subdivision which came about to allow for more affordable housing. Most of the homes built on these small lots are not deemed affordable however a modular home would allow for home ownership at a reasonable price range. The City owns 30 buildings, some of which are in need of repair.

A facilities master plan will be conducted to address these issues.

Some people are asking why council meetings are no longer televised. The person doing the filming resigned and as the city doesn’t have the equipment needed until an investment is made they will remain untele-

vised. This isn’t due to council not wanting this action but to the length of time it takes for the process to make such an action happen.

As mayor I continue to attend workshops, seminars, meetings and events. I answer all emails and phone calls and do my best to find solutions to concerns but sometimes it is difficult to do so.

Regardless, I appreciate all correspondence and want to thank everyone for all comments. Jim Hendricks is officially the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Fernie. Council extends sincere congratulations to Jim and thanks him for the many hours of service as acting CAO, deputy clerk and chief financial officer. In Mr. Hendricks’ new role as CAO, council feels confident goals will be achieved under his capable management.

LITTLER, BRENDA ELIZABETH: JUNE 02, 1939 – FEBRUARY 9, 2013 It is with much sadness that Brenda passed away at the Kelowna General Hospital on February 9, 2013 following a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her parents Tom and Elizabeth Littler and her loving companion of 20 years Arthur Lindquist, also many aunts, uncles and several cousins. After graduating from high school in Michel, B.C. and Mount Royal Collage in Calgary she became a legal secretary.

Over the years she worked in Vancouver, Baltimore, Vernon and Kelowna. She made her home in Westbank. Brenda loved to travel and had visited many countries. Leaving to mourn her loss are several cousins, their spouses and families and an uncle, many friends especially her very dear friends in Westbank who were always so very thoughtful, caring, kind and spent much time with her.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. At Brenda’s request there will be no funeral service. Her ashes will be buried with her parents in Fernie, B.C. at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the S.P.C.A. Special thanks to the staff on 4-B at the Kelowna General Hospital for their kindness given to Brenda.

ROSS WILLIAM GIBBONS: Feb. 9, 1940 – Feb. 7, 2013 Ross William Gibbons of Sechelt, B.C. passed away on Feb. 7th with his family by his side. He was born and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He attended Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Sask. He then went on to work for the C.N. Railway in Regina, Sask. Later achieving his journeyman millwright ticket at Fording River in Elkford, B.C. He dedicated much of his life to his family, who adored and loved him dearly. He was always there for them, spending time motorbiking up the Elk Valley with his son Chad and snowmobiling with Chad, Cindy and family.

He also travelled to baseball games in the States and the Grand Canyon with his family.

He had an amazing ability to mend and fix anything that needed attention. He has made many happy memories for his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter Cindy, son Chad, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, sister Ila and numerous nieces, nephews and good friends. He was sadly preceded in death by his daughter Pamela. A funeral service was held in Sechelt at the St. Johns United Church on Feb. 16th.

he Free Press is one of the oldest business in Fernie. Almost as soon as people were settling in the area and starting to build the town, they wanted a community newspaper to spread the local news, events and everything else

that was happening, and so, out of a tent, The Free Press was born.

In August 1898 Mr. G.G Henderson arrived in Fernie.

Although the town didn’t look like much back then, Mr. Henderson had a hunch that it was going to grow into something amazing, so he and his brother Mr. R.L. Henderson bought a lot

with the intention of starting a newspaper business. The Free Press is still in the same lot, on Second Avenue.

He then went east to buy the plant and stock necessary to build a first class newspaper and job printing office, returning late in November of the same year.

Kelvin’s Kitchen gives back to local seniors

“I came to Canada for the people and the country is so good,” said Kelvin. “When I came here I said this town is good, we’ll stay here. I like small towns.”

Shortly after, they opened up Kelvin’s Kitchen and it has been going strong ever since. It is the owners’ appreciation for their customers that really sets the restaurant apart from others in town. Every spring Kelvin and Elain host a free dinner for the local seniors. They began the tradition the first year they were open and seniors from Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, and even the

South Country come out for the special meal.

“When you’re doing anything from your heart people know it.

When you come to the restaurant you’re supporting our small town. I thought I can do good for the seniors, so why not?” explained Kelvin.

“Without the seniors, Fernie wouldn’t exist. They gave us the future. We want to appreciate and thank the seniors for what they have given us.”

Kelvin and Elain supply the place and the food, and a group of loyal customers volunteer to help with the serving and clean up.

Jim Booth and his wife Alice are regulars at Kelvin’s and have been helping out at the annual seniors’ dinner for years. “One way

of showing appreciation for Kelvin and the community and the seniors is to come and help,” said Jim. “It’s a pretty big endeavor that he takes upon himself by supplying the meal. He wants to appreciate the seniors for what they’ve done in the past, and reward and recognize them by having this dinner.”

The dinner is generally held in April, shortly after the snow has melted, and is free for anyone over the age of 65. Following the seniors’ night, Kelvin and Elain host a thank you dinner for all of the volunteers.
