spring 2013

Today is a bittersweet day as I am announcing that I have resigned my treasured position as the Success By 6 regional coordinator. My journey has been rewarding, challenging and one that I am most proud of. It is now time for me to hand this cherished position over to a successor as I am moving on to a new position with the Cowichan Communities Health Network. This is not really good bye as I will be as active in our community as I have ever been. When I look back at where Success By 6 started over seven years ago I am amazed at what has taken place in a relatively short period of time. In 2005 no one knew what Success By 6 was. Today we are a name that is recognized not only in the Cowichan Region but across the province. Hard work and a dedicated team of community partners and agencies have supported building the Success By 6 movement that shows no sign of letting up. How did we get there? We have distributed over 440,000 Cowichan Kids Magazines with our message of the importance of early childhood development finding its way in to every home and every business. We have honoured and celebrated dozens of Champions for Children who dedicate their lives to making a better world for our children and families. We have worked with Government, School Districts, Business, Health and community organizations to collaborate on a number of projects including our Understanding Children Conference, Mother Goose programs and the up and coming Whales Tales Early Learning Centre. We have a great website where parents and community members can access information on programs and services as well as links to information that they may require We have shared conversations with hundreds of community members and organizations to find ways where we can work together and make a better world for our children We have funded programs and play elements in parks such as the delightful water park in Crofton Are we done?? NO WAY! Because the Cowichan Valley cares for kids and has a vision of how to ensure that every child is healthy and happy and succeeds in school and in life. You will march on.

The 5 Steps to Positive Parenting By Professor Matt Sanders

What is Positive Parenting? Positive parenting aims to promote children’s development and manage children’s behaviour and emotions in a constructive and non-hurtful way. It is based on strong, nurturing relationships, good communication and positive attention to help children develop. Positive parenting involves emphasizing the positive and planning ahead to prevent problems. It also involves using everyday situations and creating opportunities to help children learn and to motivate them to do their best. Children who grow up with positive parenting are likely to develop the skills they need to do well at school work, build friendships, and feel good about themselves. They are also much less likely to develop behavioural or emotional problems when they get older. Parents who learn to use positive parenting skills typically feel more confident and competent in managing daily parenting tasks, are less depressed, less stressed, and have less conflict with their partners over parenting issues.

The 5 Steps to Positive Parenting are: 1) Creating a Safe, Interesting Environment • Teach Your Child Road Safety Rules • Provide Safety Equipment • Be Safety Conscious Near Schools • Teach Your Child About Personal Safety 2) Having a Positive Learning Environment • Spend Time With Your Child • Speak Nicely • Chat and Listen Often • Share Your Own Experiences • Be Affectionate

• • • •

Use Descriptive Praise Give Your Child Attention Use Incidental Teaching Get Involved in Your Child’s School

3) Using Assertive Discipline • Prepare in Advance • Arrange Activities so your child has something interesting to do • Set Some Ground Rules • Praise Good Behaviour • Watch and Supervise • Use Planned Ignoring for Minor Misbehaviour • Use Your Voice Effectively – stay calm, get close to your child and use a firm voice • Use Directed Discussion to make sure your child knows and understands the rules • Give Clear, Calm Instructions • Take Away a Problem Activity • Back up Instructions with Consequences 4) Having Realistic Expectations • Consider your Expectations of

• • •

Your child Check What Other Parents Expect Check What Your School Expects Consider Your Expectations of Yourself

5) Taking Care of Yourself as a Parent Parenting is easier when parents’ personal needs for support, companionship, intimacy, recreation and time alone are being met. Being a good parent does not mean that your child should completely dominate your life. If your own needs as an adult are being met, it is much easier to be patient, consistent and available to your child. Here are some ideas to help you look after yourself: • Balance Work and Family • Talk Back to Negative Thinking • Work as a Team Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program in Australia. Cowichan Kids

Fit Families = Healthy Tomorrows

Although we are fortunate to live in a place where children have the opportunity to play outside for 365 days of the year, this is not necessarily the case for what happens for some children in the Cowichan Region. The winter blahs have kept many children and adults inactive and in doors. Fitness levels have waivered. But do not fear, the rain is soon to end and the call to be outside is loud and inviting. With obesity levels skyrocketing now is the time to become active with your children. Being active does not hurt- As a matter of fact being active with your children can create some of the best memories they will take away from their childhood. The quality time that you spend with your children engaging in fun and energetic activities benefits everyone! It benefits the heart, body and mind. The first thing you need to do is turn off the television and the computer. Go ahead- just do it! Research is showing that it is not specific skills that matter, but the introduction to a number of skills such as jumping, throwing a ball, catching and running that builds the foundational skills for success in future sports, or dance. Don’t feel rushed to teach the specific skills to a specific sport when the children are young... just playing is all that they really need. Being active does not need to cost a lot of money and does not require that the children are registered into sports or community activities. Being active can be as fun as chasing each other through a forest trail, riding bikes to the mail box or jumping over mud puddles. The more you do with your children the more you can help them develop a lifelong love of being active and fit. If your children have the good fortune of participating on community sports teams or other programs don’t let their activity level stop at the end of the practice or lesson. Have the children show you what they have learned when they get home. Play with a soccer ball in the back yard or dance your hearts out in the living room. Your excitement and participation in this play is the catalyst for the lifelong love of being active and is the reinforcement for their behaviour. It is difficult for children to experience success when they are afraid of falling or can’t catch a ball or don’t have the stamina to run down the field or dance for an hour. This is where being active every day benefits children immensely. It does not always need to be adult oriented or directed play but let your children play with neighbourhood children or set up play dates... to PLAY. As parents we worry more about what we heard on the news from a town in Alabama and don’t allow our children to be outside for a fear that something could happen to them... What matters more is what is happening in your own home here in Cowichan and that our children are becoming inactive and unengaged. Let them be outside and active. Being healthy and active is a choice and sadly one that is being overlooked by many families. Don’t let your family fall into the” stay in front of the television family” category.... There is a whole world of fitness and fun just waiting on the other side of your door. Try it... you will love it and your children will thank you! Meals Your Toddler Will Love Ellyn Satter, in her bible of feeding children “How to Get Your Kids to Eat but Not Too Much” reminds parents that when it comes to feeding kids you are responsible for: • Providing a variety of healthy options representing all of the food groups. • Providing quality foods. • Introducing your child to as much variety in tastes, textures and food combinations as you can in the first two years of life. • Serving food in age appropriate ways your child can handle. • Allowing eating methods your child can handle. Eating with fingers and hand should be allowed! • Setting a reasonably structures pattern of meals and snacks. • Making family meal times as comfortable, calm and relaxed as possible. • Maintaining standards of behaviour at the table. It is important to keep in mind that your child in ultimately responsible for what he or she eats and how much. As long as you have adhered to the guiding principles above, chances are your child will be on board with accepting a variety of different foods. To further enhance your child’s interests in eating, consider these strategies: 1. Involve kids in meal preparation. Toddlers can help scrub potatoes, tear lettuce for a salad, arrange vegetables on a platter, shape cookies or stir pancake batter. Involvement like this builds self esteem. 2. Allow kids to serve themselves at the table from the healthy choices you have made available. 3. Eat meals at the table with the TV turned off. The fewer distractions at meal time the better. 4. Allow kids to help with the clean up be it clearing the table or washing certain childproof dishes. 5. Limit the amount of junk food stocked up in the house.

6.

Instead keep healthy crackers and cheese, cut up fruits and vegetables and healthy cereals on hand. Don’t expect your kids to eat what you won’t. If Dad hates vegetables or Mom does not drink milk, it will be hard to get your child to eat these foods. Be a good silent role model.

Great Snacks

 A self made parfait made of layers of yogurt, fruit and granola  Homemade fruit popsicles  Celery topped with cheese or peanut butter  PB and jam sandwiches cut into 4 sticks or neat shapes with cookie cutters  Bread sticks with dip  Cheese strings  Chocolate milk  Applesauce or fruit cups  Rolled up lean turkey slice  Fruit with pits removed

Wondering if your child eats enough? Healthy amounts of food from each food

group groups per day are as follows. Milk products: 4 servings/day based on ½ cup serving Vegetables and fruit: 4-5 servings a day base on a ¼ -1/2 cup serving. Aim to make at least 2 of these vegetable servings per day. Grain Products: 3-4 servings/day with a ½ slice of bread or ½ cup of pasta or rice counted as 1 serving. Meat and Alternatives: 2 servings/cay based on a 2 ounce serving, e.g. 1/3 cup baked beans, ¼ cup tofu, 1 Tbsp peanut butter, ½ egg or ½ cup cottage cheese. Meat portions the size of your child’s palm are appropriate, just like your palm is a good measure for you. Toilet Learning Potty training, toilet training…. In our politically correct world it has been renamed “toilet learning.” Whatever you call it, it seems to strike fear in the hearts of parents!!! Fear not. Unless your child has sensory or special needs, toilet learning is a process which needs to be approached systematically and with consistency. This means that across all settings (e.g. daycare, preschool, extended family) everyone needs to be toileting the same way. It seems that parents feel pressured these days to have their child toileting early. Whether this is to accommodate a caregiving situation or because family members have given them false information (i.e.” back in the day, your mother was trained by 14 months old”… P.S. as we get older our memories can be faulty), parents are approaching toileting with anxiety.

Typically developing children will learn toileting between 18 months and 3 years. There are actually six phases of toilet learning (yes, six!) and prior to that there is a period of preparation or readiness. The signs of readiness include: staying dry for 2-3 hours in the daytime; child is aware of being wet or dirty; child has regular bowel and bladder movements; child shows an interest in the toilet; child is able to follow short verbal or visual instructions; ability to sit for short periods of time; social and emotional ability to cooperate. Begin by teaching the toileting language that your family uses. If you are comfortable, have your child watch a same sex adult use the toilet. Help your child learn to tell you when they are peeing or pooping in their diaper by noticing it (i.e. “oh, you are pooping in your diaper.”). Start encouraging your child’s independence – dressing,

helping with chores, etc. Buy or borrow a potty chair or an insert for the toilet seat and stool. Buy a dozen pairs of waffle weave training pants or regular underwear, expecting that there will be accidents and clean-up to be done. Put the potty in the bathroom and explain to your child how to use it and let them practice. If necessary, read toileting books with your child. Avoid using Pull-Ups on your child as children simply see them as a continuation of diapers. In the daytime, dress your child in easy to remove pants. Sit your child on the potty first thing in the morning. Have your child use the potty regularly after meals, before leaving the house and at bedtime. If you think your child needs to go to the bathroom, say “let’s go to the potty” and then take them there. Practice and routine are important so praise all attempts. The six phases are broken

down into: day bladder training including trip training and self-initiation training; day bowel training with the same two phases and then night training with urine training and bowel training. Let’s begin with Phase One – Daytime Bladder Training. Figure out how often to take your child to the toilet AT HOME. When it’s time, TELL your child, “It’s time to go to the bathroom.” Encourage your child to tell you what is going on (i.e. “going pee”). Have your child sit or stand to pee. You can try two things at this point: child stays seated until they pee; child sits for 7 minutes, off for 20 minutes, back on for 7 minutes. Move to phase two when the child urinates when taken to the toilet regularly and stays dry between daytime trips. Phase Two is Self-Initiation Training. At this phase, children begin to initiate trips to the toilet on their own. They may grab

themselves and do the “peepee dance”, use the speech you modeled for them in the readiness stage or take your hand and lead you to the toilet. If these things happen, don’t ask your child if they need to go, tell them “you need to go to the bathroom” and take them there. Phase Three is Bowel training in the daytime. Make sure your child’s diet includes plenty of fibre, water and whole foods. Bowel movements generally happen on a schedule. Begin by recording your child’s schedule over a period of a week. Find the common times they tend to go and 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time, take them to the toilet. Praise successes and help with wiping and washing hands. Do this until most of the bowel movements are occurring in the toilet for 2 weeks. Phase Four is Bowel Self-Initiation. Most children begin to initiate on their own

as they have learned from the bladder training (e.g. doing the “dance”, using speech, taking your hand). Many children like to go and hide or crouch down at this phase. Keep your eye out for these behaviours. Again, don’t ask your child if they need to go, tell them “you need to go to the bathroom” and then take them there. Phase Five is Night Time Bladder Training. In order to prepare for this, put a mattress protector on the bed, give no liquids after 6:00 p.m. and do not use diapers, Pull-Ups or plastic pants at bedtime. Take the child to pee just before bed. Wake the child 2 hours

later to try to pee again and do this once more 2 hours later. When the bed has been dry for 1 week, stop night waking your child at the trip that is not needed. Phase Six is Night Time Bowel Training. There is usually not an issue here unless your child’s routine includes a night time bowel movement. If this is the case, repeat Phase Five. Just remember, before you begin toilet learning with your child, you must have the time, willingness, patience and consistency to make this a successful learning opportunity. If there have been any recent changes or stressors

in the home, this might not be the best time to initiate toilet learning. No matter what happens, be careful not to turn this experience into a power struggle. If the child is not successful at any stage, either stop, continue for a longer period in the stage or return to an earlier stage. As in all learning, repetition and consistency will ensure success. No matter what you call it, it will happen. After all, we’ve been doing this for thousands of years! Written by Shelley Rattink, Family Resources Consultant and Jenny deVries, Occupational Therapist at the Sundrops Centre for Child Development. Adapted from “Toilet Training for Everyone: It’s Never Too Late” – Pat Mirenda, PhD. BCBA, Dept. of Educational and Counselling Psychology & Special Education at UBC.

Support for Teen Parents Did you know that there is a program in Duncan that will be celebrating 20 years of providing quality child care for children birth to three years and parental support? The name of the Program is Growing Together Child and Parent Society. It is a nonprofit society with a mission to provide a safe place for young parents to leave their children while they attend school to finish their basic education. Growing Together is the only designated Young Parent Program between Victoria and Nanaimo. Growing Together is situated on the grounds next to the Cowichan Valley Open Learning Cooperative on Cairnsmore Street in Duncan. This puts the program in exactly the right place for mothers who are nursing their babies, to walk across the path to feed their child as needed. Parenting support and a part-time support worker are just a few of the services offered on site. Young Parents who are attending school (anywhere in school district 79) and gave birth to their child before they turned 20 may qualify for a fully funded child care space. All staff at Growing Together are fully qualified Infant and Toddler educators. Developmentally appropriate activities are provided in one of the three childcare rooms in the program. The Centre has an open door policy for parents to observe

Bubbles

Cowichan Kids

Bubbles are like tickles captured in wet kisses. The creation of bubbles, the glitter and strange texture of bubbles, the freedom of dancing bubbles and the popping of escaping bubbles are fascinating activities for children who love bubbles. Bubbles at the bottom of a waterfall, along the river or in a fish tank are nature’s own special treat for bubble lovers. Bubble play is fun anytime. Inside, outside, sunny days and rainy ones too. They can be made with your breath, by a breeze or running water. They can be messy but they always make cleaning up more fun.

Bubble Recipes

Basic bubble Recipe Equal parts dish soap and water (some soaps work better than others)

For Stronger Bubbles

2 cups dish soap 6 cups water ¾ cup corn syrup Mix well. Allow to settle for at least 4 hours before using ( over night is great). The corn syrup helps make the bubbles stronger and not pop as easily.

Things to blow bubbles with

Straws 2- sided can (Take both ends off – make sure there are no sharp edges) 6 pack of pop holder Tops of mason jars

The Bubble song

1 little, 2 little, 3 little bubbles 4 little, 5 little, 6 little bubbles 7 little, 8 little, 9 little bubbles 10 little bubbles go pop, pop, pop Pop those, pop those, pop those bubbles Pop those, pop those, pop those bubbles Pop those, pop those, pop those bubbles 10 little bubbles go pop, pop, POP!

Healthy Children, Healthy Futures Facilitator Training

Since 1996, the CAPC coalition sites at the Friendship Centres in Duncan and Port Alberni have offered the Healthy Children, Healthy Futures (HCHF), a parenting group for parents of children 0 to 6 years old. This year the Duncan HCHF team hosted a 2 day Facilitator Training to a team of 7 participants. This peer facilitated, modular based parent education and discussion program trains a combination of parents and staff from local agencies, to facilitate the 14 module parenting education and discussion program for parents/caregivers of children 0 to 6. On November 19th and 20th, Hiiye’yu Lelum (The House of Friendship) Society offered this two day training program to a motivated group of 7 moms, dads and grand moms. The training was delivered by Greta Pearson, a long time HCHF Facilitator and Program Coordinator Mark Turner. The Healthy Children, Healthy Futures Program All of those who facilitate have taken the Facilitator Training. While more than two sites deliver the 14 modules, they customise the delivery, length, and content of each module specifically for the group of parents and caregivers of children 0 to 6 years old attending. The module topics are: • The Big Picture: How past experiences impact our worldview or approach as a parent • Pre and Post Natal Care • Caring about Children in Care • Living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) • Daily Living – Food, Fitness and Fun • Abuse Awareness and Prevention

spring 2013

• Child Safety and First Aid • Relationships and Communication • Anger and Conflict • Stress Prevention and Recreation • Goal Setting and Problem Solving • Discipline and Responsibility • Challenging Behaviours in Children • Community Resources and Peer Support The two-day training session has been developed to mimic an extended version of the group setting, the facilitators will be working in after training. Instead of a two + hour-long group time we are following a similar model just spread out over two days. The first day started with check

ins, get acquainted and group rules, we always include energizers and breaks offer participants a chance for selfcare and then we offer training on how to facilitate the Healthy Children Healthy Futures program through discussion and interactive exercises allow them to practice their new skills. “We do a soft closing the first day as if we are just taking a short break and start new the next morning like we do on a smaller scale in our groups.” Then we work towards more in-depth discussion/topics and as the second mid day comes to an end we discuss more superficial topics, begin to close the work, prepare our usual evaluation collage, do a final recap of the training

and the learning, hand out recognitions and closed the training. The Healthy Children Healthy Futures modules themselves are written so they are easily adaptable to any community, as the program’s style and topics build on local knowledge and encourage participants to share their personal valuable ways on being a parent and living in community. If you interested in discussing hosting HCHF for your organization, call Mark. For More Information If you would like to know more about attending a Healthy Children Healthy Futures group please call the Coordinator Mark Turner at 250-748-2242

Time Is The Best

Valentine Being a parent is sometimes like herding goats blindfolded. The valuable time spent with your child before and after school, activities and bedtime, is usually spent directing your children to their meals and basic responsibilities. Schedules and work can sometimes overtake valuable time with your children. Paying bills and raising children are two of the biggest responsibilities parents dwell in. Spending time with your child shouldn’t mean you have to spend money. Costly experiences can sometimes make parents feel better for lost time spent with their children. Replacing an experience or promise that was missed due to parental responsibilities is not always the right choice. Families can still feel connected without spending any money. 5 Ways to connect with your child without spending money: Reading- Take Out Some Library Books, sit together and have a quiet moment. Vancouver Island Regional Library http://virl.bc.ca/ Walk together- Discover New Local Trails-Breathe Together www.northcowichan.ca (Click on VISITORS, then Parks and Recreation, then under Quick Links click OUTDOORS) Have a tea party- Place down a tablecloth in your living room Invite all their favorite Toys to come join you. Use Mugs filled with warm water. Hide and go seek stuffed animals - Hide all your kids’ stuffed animals around your home, count to 10 while your child finds them. Neighborhood Treasure Hunt- Cut out pictures of things you wish your child to seek, or just write them down on a list. Take a neighborhood walk and discover a few new creative things that live in your neighborhood. Being a parent is both challenging and a compassionate responsibility.

As, Valentine’s Day draws near, please connect with your inner child. Give yourself time to grow as a parent and take care of yourself. You are the best Valentine gift you could give your child.
