Local student places in regional writing competition Castlegar News Reporter

A student from Grand Forks has taken second place in a writing competition. The Kootenay Literary Competition is a region-wide event. The contest is based out of Nelson but covers Golden, Cranbrook, Sparwood, Naksup and everywhere in between, so when

15-year-old Grand Forks Secondary School student Megan Chapman won second place in the Kootenay Youth Creative Writing category, she knew she had gone up against a fair share of competition. Chapman wrote the story “Broken Promises” as part of a regular assignment for English class without any thought toward contests.

City of GF approves emergency plan Grand Forks briefs Grand Forks City council has approved an Emergency Management Agreement (EMA) between the City of Grand Forks and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. The EMA allows streamlined cooperation between individual municipalities and the regional district, including the sharing of resources, manpower and equipment, in times of disaster or emergency. All participating municipalities agree to contribute resources to other municipalities or the regional district on request, while reserving the right to maintain adequate resources for their own anticipated needs.

Trails Society gets grant The TransCanada Trail Association has awarded the Grand Forks Community Trail Society $56,000 to put toward work on the trail from Grand Forks to Christina Lake. In a presentation to city council on Feb. 4, society treasurer Mary Ann Westaway said the money was earmarked for the engineering work that would be required in preparation for paving the 17.5 km. trail. Event The art gallery will host a Venetian-style masquerade party on Sat., Feb. 23 from 8 p.m. until midnight. Tickets $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Mad Dog 20/20 will perform. Call 250-4422211 for more details.

“My teacher submitted it for me,” she said, noting that her teacher is also her mother Lisa. The story is about a boy in Nazi Germany who is on the run. Throughout the story, he flashes back to when he lost his parents. Chapman isn’t sure how she chose the topic. “It just came to me,” she said. The student does love writing. English

is her favourite subject. Chapman’s story was added to an anthology available at ko otenay litcomp. com. She won a copy of the anthology and $100. Her work was critiqued by a professional writer and she said she got a lot of positive feedback. Chapman wants to keep writing, possibly as a future career choice.

Sports Major media sporting event coming to area Nelson staff West Kootenay Advertiser

With the contest window opening this weekend, 13 of the 16 chosen riders are preparing to drop into the updated Red Bull Ultra Natural course located at Baldface Lodge just north of Nelson. In total, eight riders will join the top finishers from last year on the ultimate snowboard run, complete with more features and options than previously imaginable. The event is being touted as something that will redefine what is possible in snowboard competition on a single day during the February 1521 holding period. Travis Rice, Gigi Rüf, Nicolas Müller, Lucas Debari, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Jake Blauvelt and David Carrier-Porcheron return as the top finishers from 2012. Last year’s fourthplace finisher John Jackson, who is currently injured, will sit out the competition but attend as an on-camera personality. In Jackson’s place, Eero Niemela, who finished in ninthplace last year, will round out the top eight finishers from 2012. The first four new rider spots were selected based on standout film parts

and contest results in the last few seasons. The incoming riders including Torstein Horgmo, Pat Moore, Bode Merrill and Mikey Rencz are pushing all aspects of snowboarding today. Horgmo’s made an incredible impact on the sport over the past few seasons, as documented in film parts and contest riding with big air and slopestyle titles that will be a force on the Red Bull Ultra Natural course. Moore, who continually makes a mark in quarterpipes and with standout video parts, was invited in 2012 but bowed out with an injury. Now he’s healthy, strong and ready to drop in. Merrill’s creative lines, innovative tricks and high impact video parts stand out on film. This year he’ll have his chance to see if his skills on camera translate to

the one-day event. Rencz is a longtime Canadian rider who has paid his dues in the B.C. backcountry. His double-song, closing segment in 2012 exemplified the style of riding that will stand out at Red Bull Ultra Natural. A repeat slope-

Variety helps family during crisis Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser

For three weeks, life was a bumpy and emotional road. Trail resident Kelsey Smith was recalling the journey she and partner Pete Burgie, endured following the birth of their first child, Grace. Baby Grace was born full-term on July 31 of last year, and appeared to be completely healthy at birth. Within hours, however, her temperature began to drop. To keep the newborn warm, she was placed in an incubator on the maternity ward at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH). Laboratory blood tests soon revealed the newborn had neonatal hypoglycemia, a condition that refers to low blood sugar (glucose) in the first few days after birth. Babies need glucose for energy, most of which is used by the brain. Within 24 hours, a neonatal specialist was flown to KBRH from Vancouver Children’s Hospital to as-

sist pediatrician Dr. Henry Upkeh confirm the diagnosis, and decide the safest course of treatment. “We didn’t have the proper technology in Trail to gradually bring up her blood sugar,” said the baby’s mother “So we were flown to Surrey Memorial Hospital where she received one-on-one care for three weeks.” To provide temperature support and receive specialized intravenous feedings, Grace lived in an incubator in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. “We could only put our hands in to touch her,” said Smith. With the family’s medical expenses mounting, Variety -The Children’s Charity, stepped in to help the first-time parents defray costs that were accumulating during their stay in Vancouver. Smith said the charity stepped in and covered the expense of the medi-vac flights, both to and from Vancouver. In addition, the charity helped lessen the parent’s stress by paying for Smith’s

lodging in a hotel near the hospital, and by providing a daily stipend to cover the cost of food. Smith said “It was all about Grace” during those tumultuous three weeks. “It was incredible to see how much they cared about our baby.” As she nears seven months, Grace is a happy, healthy child, said Smith. “She is perfectly fine now, without any issues,” she added. “When I look at her I know how precious life is and how quickly it can change.” The weekend of Feb. 16 and 17 marks the 47th Annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon.

Last year, more than one million viewers tuned in to watch the event, said the charity’s press release. Almost $7 million was raised, and all the money “raised in B.C. stays in B.C. to go to the families and organizations who need help.” The telethon will feature 23 hours of performances by entertainers and inspirational stories about the children Variety -The Children’s Charity has helped. The telethon begins next Saturday at 7 p.m. on Global BC. To donate, call 310KIDS or visit www. variety.bc.ca.

Environment Rossland -Trail bear numbers down this year TRAIL STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

The 2012 Bear Aware season was slightly quieter overall than previous years in Trail, according to the recent report released by the Rossland Trail Bear Aware committee.

“People in both communities are calling more often to report garbage problems such as unsecured dumpsters...”

programming in those communities, prompting the goal of seeking financial support from Warfield and Montrose,” said Weider. The issue of gar-

bage was highlighted in Trail in September with the shooting of a bear family by a conservation officer in West Trail. Wieder said Trail’s current waste man-

agement bylaws are ineffective at keeping garbage inaccessible to wildlife on private property, mostly due to garbage pick‐up occurring in laneways. “City council

is reluctant to pass stronger bylaws as they feel the region and province should do more to manage bear related problems,” she said in her report.

-Sharnon Wieder The number of problem wildlife occurrence reports (PWOR) in the city rose by one to 124 for 2012, but far below the six-year high of 189 in 2010. And the number of black bears destroyed in the city was down as well, with four bears compared to six in 2011 and 13 in 2010. Sharon Wieder, Rossland Trail Bear Aware community coordinator, said a very wet spring with cooler than normal temperatures affected bear activity. But the common theme of unsecured garbage continued unabated in 2012, she said in her report. “People in both communities are calling more often to report garbage problems such as unsecured dumpsters and residential garbage issues such as outside storage and putting garbage out too early before scheduled pick up,” she said. However, Montrose wildlife reports rose from two in 2011 to 33 in 2012, Warfield jumped from eight to 21 and Fruitvale from 21 to 36, all communities without a Bear Aware program. “This increase appears to indicate a need for Bear Aware

Sports Master curlers put on a show in Castlegar WKA Contributor

The eight rinks in the final draw of this three-day annual event had lots to offer last Saturday in the way of sports, entertainment and good fellowship. The third day of the Verzuh-Clay Memorial Bonspiel(dedicated to the memory of two avid curlers) gave onlookers plenty to enjoy. Coming from various towns in south-eastern B.C., they were: Sheet #1, Skip Carr from Vernon vs. Skip Garner of Nelson; Sheet #2 Skip Chartres of Beaver Valley vs. Skip Mason of Nelson; Sheet #3 Skip Farrell of Castlegar vs. Skip Horan of Trail; and Sheet #4 Skip Tyson of Trail vs. Skip Venturini of Beaver Valley. Halfway through the final draw, both Trail teams were looking very strong as were both Nelson rinks. But by the sixth end Venturini of Beaver Valley was sitting with four rocks counting because Tyson’s last rock had sprouted wings and flew right past B.V.’s back rock. As the last Venturini rock was sliding down into the house it shot its own rear rock out, but still counting four. This was an exciting end to watch. By the end of the 6th end, Castlegar’s

Final results from the Master’s Bonspiel:

First Section A Place: Dan Horan Rink from Trail. Second Place: Bill Carr Rink from Vernon. The Alex Bojey rink from Castlegar placed in the prizes at the Annual Verzuh/Clay Memorial Bonspiel held this past week at the Castlegar and District Curling Club. Farrell was trying to add to the three points he got in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ends, but Trail’s Horan was still leading on the scoreboard at 6-3. At this point of finishing the 6th end, the Carr rink of Vernon was leading the Garner rink of Nelson 5-3. Pulling up the rear at this point, the Mason rink of Nelson was leading Skip Chartres of Beaver Valley 7-3. As the teams were getting ready to get to the next end, Paul Phipps dropped by to say hello and chat about the game. “People from the host town put their name in a hat stating the position they like to play,” said Phipps, “and that’s how teams are put together.” So the hosting town doesn’t necessarily have an edge over the out-of-town competitors, whose teams are deliberately put together. Continues

Paul, “Each team pays a fee to enter, then there’s money to win after each game and again at the end of the bonspiel, when their overall scores are tallied.”

“People from the host town put their name in a hat stating the position they’d like to play, that’s how teams are put together.” -Paul Phipps Back to the game - By the 8th end Beaver Valley’s skip Venturini is sitting 8-7 over Trail skip Tyson; Horan from Trail was sitting 6-4 over Castlegar’s Farrell. It was 7-3 for Nelson’s skip Mason over B.V.’s skip Chartres, and Vernon and Nelson were tied at 6. After the completed eight ends, Trail’s Horan had skip Farrell’s number. Chartres and Mason end-

ed at 12-5 with the Nelson rink winning. Not quite finished on sheet #4, Beaver Valley was sitting shot with four Trail rocks surrounding it. The last rock by Trail sailed down the ice only to hit its own further back, and then pushing the single B.V. right on the button. Beaver Valley didn’t mind this a bit - like the third from the Castlegar team said, “That’s TV stuff !” In the end, sheet #2 finished with skip Mason of Nelson winning over Chartres of Beaver Valley 12-4. It took a while to find out who won the Nelson/Vernon game because everyone looked so happy - but it was Garner of Nelson over Carr 7-6. Keep a watch out in the near future for Spurling and Sturling bonspiels, introducing the ‘stick’ in its various capacities for the first time in

First Section B Place: Earl Mason Rink from Nelson. Second Place: Bob Menin Rink from Trail. First Section C Place: Dave Chartres Rink from Beaver Valley. Second Place: Alex Bojey Rink from Castlegar.

First Section D Place: Don Matthews Rink from Beaver Valley. Second Place: Ron Garner Rink from Nelson.

Good curling, good sportsmanship and fun were the highlights of the bonspiel.

The Castlegar Master’s Curling Club takes to the ice Monday thru Thursday each week at 9 a.m. at the Castlegar Curling Rink. Anyone interested in curling with this club is invited to drop by the rink in the morning and learn more about Masters’ curling or they can contact Paul Phipps at 250-365-5128.

furniture. It was produced by New Denver druggist Charles F. Nelson and dates to about 1910. Three other copies have sold in the last decade, for $114 in 2005, $107 in 2006, and $52 in 2008. The card is featured in British Columbia 100 Years Ago: Portraits of a Province by Fred Thirkell and Bob Scullion, published in 2002. They write: “One cannot help but wonder about the man and his pack train. He appears to be leaving Sandon as he passes under a flume and alongside some pioneer’s cabin. But where is he going, and what about his freight?” A seller of one of the other copies of this card suggested it was household effects bound for the Slocan Star mine, a major producer between 1893 and 1917.

they have kept these things.” She says she wants to create an environment that welcomes donations and celebrates donors “for allowing history to be conserved in a professional manner.”

Pack train postcard fetched $112.50. Submitted

“No one knows the real story the picture is telling,” Thirkel and Scullion wrote, “but it does seem to say something of toil, of discomfort, and of dreams yet to be fulfilled.” • Last week’s column brought a phone call from Robin LoweIrwin, operations manager with the Princeton Museum and Archives. Last year they received a large collection of very old mining records from the son of a former government agent, who had been hanging on to them since 1972.

Lowe-Irwin stresses that people don’t need to explain their reasons when presenting artifacts to the museum. “In collection of historical items, I think that there are instances of questionable integrity, but I would hesitate in vilifying any individual for their motives, as long as the items do eventually make it home,” she says. “Many people hang onto things for different reasons, but we need to be very careful that we aren’t creating a fear of being questioned about why

Other noteworthy recent auctions: • A slide of the Castlegar train station in 1974 — the building was then white, not red — went for $45 US. Today the building is a museum. • An envelope with a 1908 postmark from Waneta went for $39 Cdn. The post office was in business from 1893 to 1950. • A 1943 postmark from Ross Spur, between Fruitvale and Salmo, sold for $15 Cdn. The post office existed there from 1915 to 1951 with a brief closure in 192021.

Entertainment/Environmental Awareness Change Agents: One-of-a-kind local movie makes film history Submitted

The local Kootenays film The Change Agents is back by popular demand to screen on Saturday February 16 at the Amnesty International Film Festival in Castlegar. The movie has made Canadian film history as the first feature length film produced by a high school. Since its premiere in November, there have been

numerous requests for screenings around the Kootenays, B.C., Alberta, in Eastern & Northern Canada, Europe, China, Indonesia and in the U.S. Shot in Krestova and Nelson, the film is the coming of age story of 17-year old Doukhobor, Carly Dutoff, who is vocal about the impacts of climate change, especially the impact of the tar sands devel-

opment on Canada’s fresh water supply. Amidst family difficulties, she and her peers set out to speak up for a planet in distress, eventually inspiring their community to change. A Doukhobor theme of making positive change through hard work and action is woven through the inspirational film. And movie-goers have been blown

Rossland Rotarians gearing up for annual wine fest Arne Petryshen West Kooteany Advertiser

For the 24th consecutive year Rossland Rotary is preparing for its annual wine festival. The festival is an opportunity to try some of Canada’s best wines, as there will be dozens on display from the Gewurtztraminer or after-dinner port. There will also be hors d’oeuvres to complement the large selection of wines to

sample. “We’ll be featuring wines from the Okanagan and the Kootenays, as well as tapas by Gabriella, chocolate from Mountain Nugget, a silent auction and door prizes.” said Tina Kenyon, Rossland Rotary president. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras, so she hopes everyone will come dressed for the occasion. “We’re really excited about this,” she said.

“We’ve got a really great crew of volunteers, some fantastic food and almost 30 wineries booked.” In past years, Rotary has held the event during Rossland Winter Carnival, but Kenyon said this year there were just too many coinciding events. So the club moved the event to the Feb. 23 date. Money raised from the festival supports local and international Rotary projects.

Custom facility helps start-up winery La Dolce Vita Getting a new winery up and running is a daunting challenge. But the establishment of Okanagan Crush Pad in the last few years is easing the burden for newbies. The benefits were obvious when we opened a bottle of Harper’s Trail Riesling last week. Harper’s Trail Estate Winery is home to the first commercial vineyard in the Kamloops area, which is north of what we normally consider to be grape country. The area gets plenty of summer heat and sunshine, though, so a vineyard with the right microclimate and orientation to the sun just might make sense if the right grape varietals are selected. Obviously, the growing season isn’t going to be as long as it in Osoyoos, for instance. A Kamloops business couple, Ed and Vicki Collett now have 18 acres of limestone-streaked land planted to grapes. Being a first in a new region means a lot of experimentation has to take place. The first seven acres of plantings included Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon

Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir and Cabernet Franc. The following year, a further 11 acres were planted, all Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Three years later, the Merlot, Pinot Noir and Gamay were all pulled out and replaced with more Cabernet Franc. The bottle of Riesling came to my attention when I went down to the cellar to choose a wine for dinner. On the stove was a pasta pot with linguini on the boil and a covered wok heating a batch of spaghetti sauce I made last summer from our abundant tomato crop (sauté onions, peppers and garlic, add whole unpeeled Roma tomatoes, spice it up, then cook down until the tomatoes break up and the sauce is nice and thick—pour it all in the blender when it cools, then package in plastic zip locks and freeze). After choosing the wine I laid some thawed filets of sole on top of the simmering sauce, some of which I then ladled over the fish. Back on went the cover until the fish was just cooked through. I took the fish out, drained the linguini, adding maybe a Continued on P. A23

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

February 15, 2013

Tip of the Week: Questions concerning the start date of the Age of Aquarius abound where discussions about Astrology occur. There is debate as to which Age we are in. From the standpoint of synchronicity and the ‘signs’ of our times, the Age of Aquarius has certainly dawned. Aquarius and its ruling planet Uranus are symbolic of revolution. Well, we are experiencing revolution on every front of modern civilization. Common characteristics for Aquarius include science, technology, innovation and invention, rebellion and revolution, friends and friendliness, clubs and networks, hopes and wishes, humanitarianism and democracy, individuality and eccentricity, fame and popularity. Yes, the ‘signs’ of Aquarius are very evident in the world. People often look to Aquarius in a very positive light. Other signs are perceived to be darker or of lower vibration. Such attitudes are inaccurate. Every archetype just like people has its light and dark sides. As a Fixed Sign, Aquarius is linked to the other signs of Fixed Modality, which includes Leo, Taurus and Scorpio. As an Air Sign, Aquarius shares affinity with Gemini and Libra. These are the primary connections but the list goes on. So, to gain a full spectrum understanding of Aquarius, it is necessary to look to the positive and negative poles of each these signs as well. Now looking to the human condition with its numerous revolutionary challenges, dramas, crisis and horrors we can gain a whole and balanced perspective on Aquarius. Many hold great hopes for the Aquarian Age and it helps to understand it in its full light.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Quality time shared with friends verses yielding to an inward pull are the source of conflicting desires. Alternations between curiosity of and anticipation for the future are making you feel temperamental, in an emotional flux. Solutions: Take command of your emotions; let go of the illusion of control of outer situations; and ride those turbulent waves, gracefully!

Are you getting all the attention you want, or is it too much? The balance can be delicate, like now. We all need, want and deserve recognition and privacy, from time to time. Timing is a key factor and our desires can be out of sync with outer circumstances. The flip side is to acknowledge others and decipher if they need some time out. Exercise social grace.

Your sense of individuality has been getting a lot of stimulation. Some of this has come from philosophical reflection. Ideally some has come from travel and/or cultural activities. You still may not be sure where you belong exactly, but you could be learning and progressing all the same. Now it is time to pay more attention to your dreams, literally.

Whose genius do you require to activate your own? This question will linger a little longer. Ironically, at least half the answer is that it is your own genius that you seek; the proverbial diamonds in your own backyard. However, these are likely buried beneath habitual perceptions, attitudes and behaviour patterns. Soar with imagination to gain a fresh perspective.

Satisfying social exchanges continue yet will shift somewhat this week to fulfill a need for sanctuary. But do not expect to be passive. A passionate urge to dive deep may even lead you to confront some long standing fears. Sharing this time with someone you love could satisfy a festering appetite. As romantic as it sounds, you mean business!

Gaining awareness of what you truly need verses simply want continues. Implied is the nudge to be open to and acknowledge any blind spots. Everyone has at least some. To be open to receive and able to accept and, above all, act upon constructive criticism, is a true reflection of the wisdom of humility. You have no problem giving it, but can you take it?

The last licks of a playful cycle are available now. Perhaps the tone has been more dramatic than lighthearted. Either way, you will be more willing to work the angles. Desires for fun are still lingering. Direct your imagination to contribute but keep it away from the worry jar. If you go too far you may fall in. Be selective with your associations and aim for uplifting entertainments.

A lot has been shifting and shaking close to home and this will continue. At the most literal level, home is where your heart is, literally. Wherever you go there you… project what is within attracting people and circumstances without. Positively, you are moved to create beauty around you. Practically, you want to make improvements. Romantically, you dream on….

A flood of fresh ideas are flowing in. These are producing inspirations to make changes in your space. Cleaning, decorating, renovating… they all apply. This trend will continue for the next several weeks. However, when Mercury turns retrograde on the 23rd, and even leading up to that date, your resolve could dissolve. Take initiative now to create momentum to see you through.

Your energy levels are beginning to rise. That you want to harness them to make a break is your business. A disruption in our regular routine is a form of brain food. Satisfying the hunger of awakened desires is the key to offset the depression of repression. How to achieve satisfaction so that the repercussion does not accrue undue debt is a worthwhile question.

Sometimes it is good to play it safe while at others it is better to try anything once, like now. You are in as long as it does not require a lot of input. A growing urge to plod and graze is taking the fire out of your desire. Yet, you are curious enough to engage your imagination. Avoid over committing to people and situations now. Be strategic to get the most for the least.

Many thoughts and ideas have been brewing. Now you feel a growing determination to act on them. If you are organized and have assembled the appropriate tools and resources, your confidence levels will be up. If you have not made preparations, make them now. This includes a strategic outreach to key contacts. Stimulate friendships, inside and out!

La Dolce Vita column Continued from P. A15

...half-cup of pasta water to the sauce as a thickener, then dumped the pasta into the sauce and kept it on the heat for a few minutes to help the sauce be absorbed. The pasta was plated and the fish laid on top, along with a bit of sauce, and a sprinkling of freshly grated parmesan finished it off. With a side of mixed greens for a salad, the meal was simple, quick and healthy. The Harper’s Trail Riesling was a delight. A very nice full body was enhanced with a touch of the oiliness that sets the varietal apart. Apple, peach and honeysuckle notes and a

lovely aroma made us instant fans of this version. Kudos to winemaker Michael Bartier, who oversees all the Okanagan Crush Pad wines and says, unequivocally, that “Wine isn’t made; it’s grown.” Later, as I read about Harper’s Trail Estate Winery (named for a Kamloops pioneer) I was extremely impressed with the web site, a clean and information-packed site that is easy to navigate and a very helpful reference. And my thoughts once again turned to what a great asset Okanagan Crush Pad is to the B.C. wine industry. In the case of Ed and Vicki Collett, they have been able

to take the harvest from their new vineyard and put into the very capable team at OCP. Bartier is a very talented winemaker and the marketing team headed by Christine Colleta is as canny as they come. Colletta’s associate, Leann Froese, looks after media inquiries, but the web site is so thorough that all I had to do was message my Facebook pal and tell her how great the wine was. In the Kootenays, Nelson’s BC Wine Guys stock Harper’s Trail wines. They are worth checking out. – Lorne Eckersley, publisher of the Creston Valley Advance, a Black Press publication.

Change Agents in Castlegar Continued from P. A14

...writer/director Robyn Sheppard after a tearful exchange with a student who said “if everything being said about the environmental crisis is true, then why aren’t we doing more to change things. “It’s an emergency. We need to do more.” The result that came is what one small mountain community can creatively do to affect positive change. “We’ve been recording people’s responses to the film and we’re hearing an authentic voice of

youth speaking up for the earth. We’re discovering that just about everyone considers themselves a Change Agent and some have told us about the changes they’re making in their lives. This is good news,” says executive producer Jo Ann Lowell. Come on out and support this community project and hear what one generation is voicing about a planet in peril...inspiring us to change. One show only, the screening begins 7 p.m. on Saturday February 16 at the Brilliant Cultural Centre

in Castlegar, followed by a brief discussion with the filmmakers who will be present. Tickets available at the door, which open at 6 p.m., $8 students/seniors and $10 for adults. The trailer can be viewed at www.thechangeagents.net Contacts: Jo Ann Lowell, Executive Producer 250354-4481 , joannlowell@gmail.com Robyn Sheppard, Writer/Director 250352-2331, rpsheppard2001@yahoo.ca Alecia Maslechko, Assoc. Teck exceeds pH levels Continued from P. A5

...Teck did notify the Ministry of Environment and the Provincial Emergency Program, said Richard Deane, Teck environment, health and safety and public affairs manager. “We take each incident where we have

a misstep like this one and we want to respond to this and make sure we have addressed the potential causes of this incident,” he said. In last 15 years the company has reduced their discharge of contaminants, mainly metals, to the river by over 95 per cent,

Deane noted. A high pH solution is used to condition the boiler water, and it was accidentally deposited to a drain that discharged into the Columbia River before it could be treated. As a result, the pH of the discharge exceeded Teck’s permitted level.
