Simpcw sees positive future for their youth

Solid waste management has come a long way over the past few years.

Regional Districts throughout the province are working towards closing landfills and opening environmentally responsible Eco-Depots in their place.

On Jan. 28, of this year the Barriere Landfill was closed for good, and on the following day a brand new Eco-Depots opened in Louis Creek.

The Louis Creek depot can be found just off the Yellowhead Highway, at 4077 Agate Bay Road.

On-site you’ll find staff person Barbara Klima (pictured), who greets each vehicle on arrival, and explains the facilities recycling program. She says the depot’ has had really good response from users to date. “People are happy it’s so close to Barriere.”

The recycle facility takes items such as oil and filters, batteries, tires, fridges, freezers, and yard waste like brush and grass clippings.

Klima notes folks can pay for disposal of their refuse with a pre-purchased Eco-Card or by cash.

She encourages new depot users to, “Come up and have a look around, and see what our Eco-Depot is all about.”

Simpcw First Nation buys land next to Raft River

Title should be transferred this week as Simpcw First Nation acquires 20 acres of land next to Raft River, according to Steven Patterson, the band’s land manager.

“Simpcw First Nation is a very progressive community and this is their first community-owned fee simple lands,” Patterson said. “They will be a taxpaying landholder just like everyone else, and it is a key move towards getting away from the strained relationship with the

federal government and moving towards independence.”

The area was a traditional fishing site and was a gathering point for families as they migrated north and south throughout the seasons.

Patterson said it is too early to say exactly what the plan is yet, but he believed the intent is to keep it as fee simple as opposed to converting into reserve. He noted that if the land is given reserve status it then would be subject to the rather archaic terms of the Indian Act. This area is lo-

Chief Rita Matthew has said she would like to hold a celebration at the site once the ground is dry enough.

People alive today remember members of the band using the Raft River area as a base for berry-picking and fishing in the region.

The shoreline of the property was until recently seen by many local residents almost as a public beach.

However, previous landowners blocked access. Simpcw First Nation apparently plans to develop the property in cooperation with District of Clearwater, but what direction that development will follow is not yet clear.

Land sales focus of pre-budget debate

By Tom Fletcher Black Press Finance Minister Mike de Jong rejected NDP criticism of his government’s sale of Crown land last Thursday, and promised an update on the disposal of up to 100 properties when he presents his pre-election budget on February 19.

De Jong’s comments came after NDP leader Adrian Dix and finance critic Bruce Ralston visited one of the few properties whose location is known, a large vacant lot in Surrey that was bought in 1998 as a possible future hospital site.

Ralston said the government has counted on raising $475 million in 2013 and more than $200 million the following year through asset sales, to help balance a 2013 budget after the current one ends in the red by $1.4 billion.

“Over $700 million to fill a short-term hole in the budget,” Ralston said. “It’s not sustainable. It’s not good public policy.”

De Jong said the Surrey property is an interesting choice, since a new Surrey Memorial Hospital is under construction adjacent to the old one.

“It just makes eminent sense that the Crown would divest itself of that asset, and place it back in the private sector and allow it to begin generating economic activity and jobs,” de Jong said.

De Jong added that asset sales are nothing new to the B.C. government, where old school sites are often sold in order to finance new schools in new locations.

He repeated his promise that the next budget will be balanced, and said an update on asset sales will be released then.

surpluses from Crown corporations such as BC Hydro will be used to give the appearance of a balanced budget, which will not be fully debated before the legislature adjourns for the May 14 election.

De Jong confirmed that the legislative session will run for 19 sitting days, starting with a throne speech on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and adjourning on March 14.

Legislation to be presented includes a lengthy bill to reinstate the provincial sales tax on April 1, measures to allow a senate election, and legislation to create a new senior’s advocate.

Wiegele assists at snowmobile accident

An accident involving a snowmobiler with an apparent broken leg has Blue River heli-ski operator Mike Wiegele once again asking for tighter standards for the snowmobile industry.

“Giving consideration to the time, the location, the injury and the lack of emergency rescue equipment by the sledding group, it was fortunate that the injured sledder came out alive,” Wiegele said.

The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19, in the Smoke Creek drainage southeast of Blue River.

The injured sledder had been snowmobiling with a group when he and his machine apparently rolled down into the forest below.

A SPOT emergency device was activated to request help via satellite.

RCMP passed the request onto Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing in Blue River.

“I requested two helicopters to the site, with one as a backup because the rescue call came late in the day (15:20). There was a lack of details as to the nature, type and location of the accident,” Wiegele reported.

When they arrived at the scene they found that it was a narrow open area or meadow, adjacent to a steep south-facing upwards slope of approximately 50° plus.

The meadow was near the top of the tree line at approxi-

mately 7,000 feet elevation. The weather was overcast with flat light, and the injured person was in a steep area of obvious avalanche terrain and high danger in poor snow stability. According to Wiegele, the sledders were high-lining in what he described as exceedingly hazardous terrain.

The rescuers found the injured sledder wrapped in blankets but showing the early signs of hypothermia. He apparently had not been moved in about two hours.

With the light fading, the procedure was “load and go,” said the heli-ski operator.

The rescue crew made a trail about 100m up the hill to where the injured man was, stabilized his injuries, then slid him down to where he could be evacuated.

The injured man was flown by helicopter to the medical clinic in Blue River, where he was treated by a doctor who was a guest at the resort.

He was then transported by ambulance to hospital.

According the Wiegele, the snowmobilers had no equipment (such as a leg splint) to administer first aid or to transport the injured person to a pick-up location. They had no method of communication other than the SPOT device, he said. Apparently the sledders did little or nothing to help during the rescue and, in fact, some continued to high-line the adjacent slopes.

“It is the observation and opinion of

our safety committee that a catastrophic accident with multiple injuries and fatalities, of similar or larger magnitude as the Revelstoke shootout two years ago, will occur,” Wiegele said.

Such an incident could involve 50 or more fatalities and would tarnish reputation of all winter recreational activity operators and of B.C. tourism as a whole, he felt.

The snowmobile clubs and organizations within the North Thompson Valley are not adequately prepared for emergencies, he said. According to Wiegele, the latest incident was the third emergency rescue MWHS has been called upon to perform so far this season. He said not one rescuer from the snowmobile community was seen at any of those three rescues, or at similar rescues the heli-ski company has performed over the past few years.

“Appropriate government authorities must take immediate action by initiating and implementing Worksafe BC law of safe travel in the back country,” Wiegele said.

Six Wells Gray Search and Rescue members also responded to the SPOT emergency call. They were stood down at the SAR Hall in Clearwater when it was determined that Mike Wiegele helicopters had arrived on the scene and had evacuated the injured snowmobiler.

Independent MLAs have a dream

VICTORIA – Imagine a province where party leaders are chosen in an independently supervised vote, with 12-year-olds, dead people and pets prevented from voting.

Imagine a province where roving gangs of influence-seekers aren’t allowed to join multiple parties, and the rule is actually enforced. One where corporations and unions have to advertise in their own name instead of financing political parties and then disclosing millions in donations months after the election is over.

Imagine a province where elections are held based on audited financial statements, not a collection of election promises that will be dismissed as a work of fiction by the new regime if the incumbent party is defeated.

A cat joined the B.C. Liberal Party to support Christy Clark. Adrian Dix won the NDP leadership with the help of bags of $10 bills stapled to new memberships. As parties go to online voting, multiple PIN numbers may be activated from the same phone number or the same address.

These and other glaring problems with our party-based political system were highlighted last week in a set of reforms proposed by three independent MLAs. Vicki Huntington broke the party choke-hold on B.C. politics by getting elected as an independent in Delta South in 2009. Bob Simpson was kicked out of the NDP caucus shortly after winning re-election for the party in Cariboo North, because he dared to criticize then-leader Carole James for a lack of policy specifics.

They were belatedly joined by Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen, who quit the B.C. Liberals in an orchestrated move to the B.C. Conservatives, and then quit that party soon after. Van Dongen does not have the credibility of the others to speak on integrity, given his self-serving party antics and his questionable decision to hire his fiancée and pay her one and a half salaries to serve as his constituency assistant.

Leaving that aside, there are some good ideas in the independents’ reform package. One is to give backbench MLAs a meaningful role in policy-making.

Simpson gave the example of Prince George MLA Shirley Bond’s term as education minister, where she had to reverse ministry policies that didn’t make sense in rural school districts. The all-party standing committee on education could have prevented this error, he said, but it didn’t because it never meets.

The party voting irregularities described above could be addressed by giving Elections BC authority to supervise party leadership votes, the way it does elections and referenda. There are unknown costs for this, and other problems. For instance, should the Marijuana Party be subject to this, or the Work Less Party, should either one muster enough organization to stage a leadership contest?

The independents had high hopes for one fundamental reform, moving B.C.’s set election date from the spring to the fall. This would take a simple amendment. The idea is for the government to table the annual budget, present the audited public accounts for the previous year, then have an election that rests on tested financial statements and initial results for the current forecast.

Both the B.C. Liberal Party and the NDP have expressed support for this idea. The independents suggest that this brief three-week legislative session is a good time to do it, so the next government can implement it.

I asked Mike de Jong, the B.C. Liberal finance minister and house leader, if he would consider it.

He allowed that it is interesting, but it’s not contemplated for the pre-election session. That will be dominated by returning the provincial sales tax, and the usual jousting over untested spending and revenue proposals. * Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

$5 bill squabble showcases benefits of small town life To the editor; After 17 years of business in Barriere, I can honestly say we’ve had some entertaining moments, many of which highlight the unique qualities of small town living.

A case in point, last week: a younger

gentleman was just leaving my store having picked-up his Purolator package.

Outside near the sidewalk he found a $5 bill on the ground.

He came back into the store to see if it belonged to the older gentleman at the front counter buy-

ing some wood pellets. The gentleman didn’t think so, but was handed the bill anyway.

So after he completed his purchase, he handed me the $5 bill and said it wasn’t his.

Where else would this ever happen?

town Canada would strangers essentially squabble over not claiming found money! Is that awesome or what?

So if you lost a $5 bill, it is still here waiting for you!

NT Communities Foundation ready to mark 10th birthday To the editor; The North Thompson Valley Communities Foundation will celebrate it’s tenth year birthday during 2013.

Throughout these years we have continuously supported the various communities of the valley with grants to support the development of groups and organizations such as the Challengers program at YCS, the Redneck Rodeo 4H Club, and a wide variety of sports and outdoor groups.

We have contributed to the ungrading of Community Halls in the Upper Clearwater, Blue River, and the Sportsplex in Clearwater. We have supported festivals; for example the Wildfire Dragon Festival in Louis Creek, and we have helped purchase ski equipment for Barriere youth. The list is long and varied.

The Foundation began when the Weyerhauser mill closed. We partnered with the Vancouver Foundation to double our funding in the beginning; but we have also invested with the Interior Savings Credit Union locally.

cal families, these local investments are growing steadily.

Investing in the future of your community is a forward thinking and progressive way to contribute to your community and the lives of all who live within.

Following a recent community planning session at Simpcw First Nation (SFN), members of the Simpcw Council expressed optimism that the youth of their community will have opportunities for improved living conditions, cultural renewal and economic success. In recent years, the Simpcw leadership has pursued policies and projects to lay the groundwork for substantial improvements in the quality of life for Simpcw families.

The long term goal of the SFN is to promote development of independent, contributing Simpcw people through education and employment. These initiatives include: Protocol agreements with neighboring municipalities and regional development agencies in the Robson and North Thompson Valleys, with a goal to provide mutual support for common development areas; Impact benefit agreements with corporations doing major natural resource de-

velopment projects in Simpcw territory, to ensure that Simpcw First Nation obtains jobs, revenues, and contracting opportunities; Forestry tenures that create business and employment opportunities for Simpcw members and also for non-aboriginal contractors and workers in Simpcw territory; Establishment of a community trust fund to support community improvement projects; An active Simpcw language and culture program in both Neqweqwelsten school and in the community of Chu Chua; A proactive strategy of researching, documenting and mapping Simpcw traditional resource values throughout Simpcw territory to confirm historical Simpcw aboriginal use and occupancy; An active land acquisition strategy of purchasing land throughout Simpcw territory in locations that have economic or cultural value to Simpcw First Nation.

though we appreciate the fact that Idle No More has drawn national attention to historical injustices and the modern-day struggles of many First Nations communities, the Simpcw view is that we take responsibility in our own traditional territory for improving the prospects of our community through sound financial management, building strong business and community relationships with our non-aboriginal neighbours, and pressing the provincial and federal governments for a balanced, sustainable approach to economic growth, one that creates businesses and jobs while protecting the natural environment for the benefit of future generations.”

Chief Matthew went on to point out that Bill C-45, the recent federal omnibus bill, is a threat to sustainable economic development and also to First Nations rights and aboriginal title because it removes regulations that protect clean water, fish and wildlife habitat and environmental values important to the quality of life of future generations. “Our response to Bill C-45 will be to play an even more active role in ensuring that companies and government agencies respect the long-term integrity of the natural ecosystems in the areas in Simpcw territory where economic development projects are carried out.”

Simpcw First Nation People have evidence of occupancy in the North Thompson and Robson Valley region since at least the end of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. Their traditional territory includes the North Thompson drainage basin from McClure northward, as well as the Robson Valley area from McBride

to Jasper. The western boundary of Simpcw territory borders on the Bowron Lakes in the north and takes in part of the Bonaparte Plateau in the south, while the eastern boundary includes parts of the Columbia and Peace River drainage systems.

Originally, the Simpcw had active villages and a network of trails throughout this vast territory. During the 19th century, however, many Simpcw villages were virtually wiped out by epidemics of smallpox, measles and influenza. The survivors re-grouped at Chu Chua, the main Simpcw reserve community of today, but Simpcw people continue to travel throughout their territory and continue using their traditional resources through a seasonal round of hunting, fishing and gathering activities.

In its modern-day context, Simpcw First Nation has an efficient government system consisting of a Chief and Council, Band School, Education Authority and a Health Board, as well as the Simpcw Resources Group, a group of band-owned companies that has active partnerships in forestry, power line construction and environmental management.

Among the over 600 Indian Bands in Canada, Simpcw First Nation is one of the highest ranked in terms of effective financial management. Any surplus revenues gained by Simpcw through its business ventures is re-invested in the local economy, and the Simpcw workforce, ranging between 60 and 100 workers (depending on seasonal fluctuations) supports local non-aboriginal businesses through purchases of goods and services.

Grad rates: Boys falling behind girls

By Dale Bass Kamloops This Week Statistics show male students continue to lag behind females when it comes to graduating from high school — and Terry Sullivan said government needs to put more money and resources into addressing the issue.

“Everyone knows it’s an issue,” said Sullivan, superintendent for the KamloopsThompson school district and head of the provincial body of school superintendents.

“It’s something everybody talks about. It needs some leadership provincially and nationally.”

The most recent completion study showed 81 per cent of boys will leave Grade 12 with a Dogwood certificate, compared to 86.6 per cent of girls — and the trend is reflected in similar statistics throughout the province.

Scott Sutherland, a spokesman with the provincial Ministry of Education, agreed with Sullivan that the lower completion rate is wellknown and documented Sullivan said the school district has employed some tactics in addressing the issue and the fact boys learn differently than girls.

It is also reflected in the foundation-skills assessment tests and in Grade 12 English exams, Sutherland added.

He noted that, despite the lower percentage for completion, “B.C. boys are doing very well” and pointed to the government’s education plan as a document that, while acknowledging successes, “is all about improving performance.”

Sullivan noted male students are “overrepresented in special needs, in dropouts and in discipline situations” as well. He said the education system needs to make changes to its methodology to be more boy-friendly in everything from understanding they have difficulty sitting for long periods of time to rethinking

the books chosen for them to read.

Sullivan said the Kamloops-Thompson school district has tried some innovations to address teaching boys, including separating boys and girls in math and English classes in some schools.

“We’ve seen some positive results,” he said, noting he is not advocating a return to completely segregated schools for many reasons, including the need for socialization. Increasing the number of male teachers would also help, he said, noting the percentage of men at the front of a classroom is small.

“We have some great teachers,” Sullivan said, “but, any mother of boys knows what I’m talking about.”

One of the steps the school district took was to have a conference a few years ago to talk about the gender issue. Sullivan said it was scheduled for a Sunday night — during a raging snowstorm.

“The Henry Grube Centre [location] was packed and most of the people there were mothers. So, that tells you something,” he said.

Sutherland said the government has made some specific moves to address the issue in education, including the creation of two new positions — one to address aboriginal achievement and one looking at reading. The government has put $10 million into supporting reading for children in kindergarten to Grade 3, and has addressed the reality many boys stream into trades through its Industry Training Authority and Secondary School Apprenticeship Program.

Those programs are not exclusive to boys, Sutherland added, noting there is a “huge push” to see more women move into trades education.

Sullivan has seen successes come from the initiatives his district has started.

“And we can try different things in our little corner, but it needs leadership beyond here.”

District gets project updates

By Margaret Houben North Thompson Star/Journal The District of Barriere held a Committee of the Whole meeting on February 5, to get updates on several of the projects currently underway.

Eco-Tek representative, Kim Rink, spoke first, going over some minor adjustments to the building design for the water reclamation building - things like replacing a bay door with regular double doors. The design work is nearly done, and should be able to go to tender in March.

Dave Underwood spoke next, with an update on the overall wastewater project.

The concrete has been poured for the Septage

station, and the construction of the facility is on track. Two more wells will be drilled for the effluent disposal system, probably at the end of February or early March. The electrical control systems for the wastewater treatment plant are cur-

rently being worked on.

There was a discussion about where the pipes will be placed, with a few sections to be added should the finances allow. One such portion is a line down the alley from Kamloops to Lilley (in behind the Lions

Community Hall).

There will be an open house to discuss, among other things, the road design for Barriere Town Road, on February 26, at 6:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting and give their input.

SD73 grad rates: Pilot project

By Dale Bass Kamloops This Week A pilot project to better track student graduation rates appears to be more accurately reflecting the reality in school districts.

Scott Sutherland, a spokesman for the provincial Ministry of Education, said in the five districts using the new system — which removes from the total student cohort those who will never receive a Dogwood certificate — indicates the actual figures are about five per cent higher than when the analysis is done using the system that has been in place for years.

Every student who takes a course at a public school receives an identifying number. Those numbers have traditionally been used to define the size

of the student population and, from that, completion percentages were determined.

However, Sutherland said, there are often times when students are in a school system for a short period of time. This could include exchange and international students, others who move out of the district, those who die and those with disabilities who are not expected to receive a Dogwood certificate.

Districts involved in the pilot project include Kamloops-Thompson, Victoria, Rocky Mountain, Boundary and Comox.

The project was launched in a “concerted effort to get everyone more accurate and useful data,” Sutherland said. “If it proves itself, it will be adopted” by the ministry.

Mayor says municipality continues to grow

Thanks for a JCP job well done The final day for the Job Creation Partnership program between the government and the North Thompson Fall Fair & Rodeo Association took place on Jan. 25, with a wrap-up potluck luncheon at the Barriere Employment offices. Those who completed the program received certificates, congratulations and good wishes from Employment Services staff and others in attendance. NTFFRA president Jill Hayward thanked the supervisors for a “job well done”, and the participants for the efforts they put forth in learning a trade, while helping with numerous carpentry projects at the fall fair facility during the past six months.

The Job Creation Program (JCP) supports projects that provide eligible individuals with meaningful work experience to help them obtain ongoing employment. Projects must benefit the participant, community and the local economy. At the end of the participation with the JCP, participants have recent work experience and additional skills to add to their resumes, increasing their chances of successfully finding longterm employment.

I heard that someone said Barriere is “suffering”. It is unclear where this person got their facts from to make such a statement, but the statement is patently false.

Barriere is slowly growing both in population and in its economic base.

All you have to do is look at the number of young children around town and watch the new construction at some of our local businesses, as well as the new residential units being built, to see that we are a healthy and sustainable community.

To ensure that this continues, Barriere must be able to access resources outside of the District boundaries that will allow us to prosper and grow. As healthy and vibrant as we are we must not isolate ourselves. It is essential that a network of contacts be built both in the government and private sectors, that can be called upon to support and bolster our plan for social health and economic prosperity.

A few moments spent giving ill conceived comments about Barriere in public can put at peril many months of building relationships and planning.

Barriere Council has shown a dedi-

cated willingness to work with our neighbouring communities for the betterment of all. The recent successful infrastructure grant that was filed by the TNRD was a result of Barriere, Clearwater, and the surrounding electoral areas recognizing a need, and working together to secure the funds to go ahead with needed improvements to our septage processing facilities.

When our need for support goes beyond the local government level, my experience has been that I have had no problems getting access to our local MLA, Minister Lake, as well as any of the other ministers or their staff.

Short notice meetings were accommodated, email inquiries and phone calls returned promptly, and any sort of information was forwarded as quickly as possible.

As an example, last week I had the opportunity to speak with Minister Steve Thomson, the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. I pitched my personal plea for assistance to get at least long term leases on the land within our District boundaries that was not transferred to the District when we incorporated.

Despite being busy and having a number of others waiting to speak with him, Minister Thomson took the time to explain to me who it was I should contact, and asked that I check back with him on the progress of the applications.

The need for facilities that allow our seniors to stay here in the valley near their families and friends will grow dramatically in the next few years. The time to plan for this need was yesterday, but today will have to do.

Barriere has space to allow for a number of such projects to be built. Any private investor group the District works with will want the land to be owned by the District, or leased on a long term basis from the Province.

That is why I approached Minister Thomson as a first step in the process.

The next step is to gain consensus of our First Nations neighbours. By being transparent in these matters and recognizing the need to consult, I hope that

the process will go smoothly. There are a number of private entities that will help with these projects, but in all cases the projects will require properly zoned and serviced land.

Our new wastewater system will provide one of the needed services, and by upgrading other facets of our infrastructure, we will be on track to making such a project happen.

We have a need to improve the safety of all our residents that use Barriere Town Road. Another Town Hall Meeting will be held on Feb. 26, at the Ridge. The time is being worked on as we want the meeting held so that a good number of residents can attend to give their views on the subject. There will be an ad in the newspaper.

The topic will be the design of Barriere Town Road as it relates to increased safety for drivers, pedestrians and mobility devices. I was told that they are not all scooters, but that the term mobility devices worked. No rocks will be harmed during the process.

This is Heart Month - Make Health Last Get motivated now Heart and Stroke Foundation The Heart and Stroke Foundation is launching Make Health Last to help motivate and support Canadians to live the lives they want in their later years.

According to the Foundation, Canadians have the power to Make Health Last and shrink the 10-year gap between how long they live and how long they live in health by addressing five controllable behaviours that can affect heart disease and stroke risk: physical inactivity, smoking, stress, poor diet and excessive alcohol consumption. By making lifestyle changes in these areas, Canadians can change their future and gain health and quality of life in their later years.

Physical inactivity results in nearly four years of quality life lost. Everything counts, even gardening, housework or dancing with your kids or grandkids, getting off the bus or subway a stop early, taking the stairs. The rec-

ommended amount is 150 minutes of moderate- to-vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, and it can take place in bouts of 10 minutes or more. Moderate intensity activities include brisk walking or bike riding. Vigorous intensity may mean jogging or cross-country skiing.

Eating a poor diet equals nearly three years of quality life lost. By following the recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide you can be sure that you’ll meet your daily requirements for vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, which will reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Keep a food diary, eat out less, eat smaller portions, eat more vegetables and fruit, cut back on sugar-sweetened drinks.

Excessive stress can cost nearly two years or more of quality life.

Identify the source of your stress and what is bothering you. Share your feelings, talk to friends, family or professionals. Be physically active, take time for yourself and take breaks to get away from it all. Laugh more and try relaxation techniques. Check out the

Quitting smoking can add two and a half more years of quality life. Within one year of quitting, the risk of dying from smokingrelated heart disease is cut in half; within 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is cut in half, and after 15 years, the risk of dying will be nearly that of a non-smoker. Tips to quit include considering why you smoke, list your reasons to quit, put more time between your cigarettes, set a quit date, designate smoke-free areas or seek help from your physician. Supportive resources can be found on the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s website.

Excessive drinking costs Canadians two years of quality life.

If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to no more than two drinks a day, to a weekly maximum of 10 for women, or three drinks a day, to a weekly maximum of 15 for men. If you drink excessively consider your triggers, alternate alcoholic drinks with water or juice, monitor intake, sip drinks and switch to non-alcoholic drinks.

Enjoy your golden years, get healthy Heart and Stroke Foundation Canadian baby boomers have big aspirations for their golden years, but their current lifestyle choices could keep them from making these dreams a reality.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s 2013 Report on the Health of Canadians titled Reality Check warns that without immediate action, baby boomers may spend their last years in sickness, disability and immobility.

Although Canadians are living longer, according to Statistics Canada, on average, there’s a 10year gap between how long we live, and how long we live in health.

This gap is mainly due to heart disease, stroke and other chronic conditions.

A new Heart and

Stroke Foundation poll found that while almost 80 per cent of Canadian boomers think their doctors would rate them as healthy, their self-reported lifestyle choices show otherwise.

A huge majority of boomers reported not eating enough vegetables and fruit (85 per cent), more than 40 per cent are not getting enough physical activity each week, one in five (21 per cent) smoke, and one in 10 (11 per cent) are heavy drinkers. While the large majority of boomers said they feel stressed at least sometimes, almost 30 per cent flag they are often or always stressed.

Despite these lifestyle habits, more than a quarter of Canadian baby boomers don’t feel concerned about how healthy they will be later in life. And a shocking

three quarters (74 per cent) don’t know that they can reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke by up to 80 per cent with lifestyle modifications.

“The lifestyle choices that Canadian boomers are making directly contribute to living the last 10 years of their lives in sickness. This should cause boomers a lot of concern,” says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson. “The good news is that if lifestyle changes are made now, many Canadians can considerably reduce the effects of heart disease and stroke. It is possible for us to take charge of our heart health, reduce hospitalizations and immobility, significantly improving the quality of our lives.”

Brian Campkin knows first-hand what

it feels like to have a close call. Six years ago, at the age of 46, after feeling terrible shortness of breath on the tennis court, Brian was diagnosed with blocked arteries and underwent life-saving triple bypass surgery.

“I was stopped in my tracks. Literally. I had to face the fact that I wasn’t healthy – and that was a shock, but it really shouldn’t have been,” says Campkin. “I didn’t take care of myself and

I was a slave to some of life’s common stressors.

I put everything else in my life before my health.

I actually set myself on a path to sickness.”

Since then, Brian has made it his mission to turn his life around.

“I’ve taken control of my health and made a lot of healthy choices like changing my diet, so I can have the quality life I want in the future.

I’ve lost 20 pounds and feel better than ever,” Campkin adds.

The Barriere & District Riding Club wrapped up a busy and exciting 2012 season with their Year End Banquet and Awards on Oct. 27, at the Fall Fair Hall.

Approximately 100 members and their families turned out for this event. A delicious potluck dinner was enjoyed before the Awards were handed out.

Trophy Buckles and bronc-style halters (for the novice gymkhana classes) were awarded to the High Point winners; embroidered saddle blankets to the runners-up, halters for third, embroidered saddle covers for fourth, and a set of polo wraps for fifth in all age divisions for the horse shows and the gymkhanas.

First Nations educators network on teaching the Secwepmectsin language Little Moccasins Head Start Program Simpcw First Nation Little Moccasins Head Start staff, Angie Rainer and Arlene Mitchell, along with language teacher Kye7e Mona Jules, Roberta Haller, Charli Fortier, Therese Ritchie and student Marisa Eustache enjoyed a day at Tk’emlúps immersed in “SecwepmectsínWel Me7 Yews…Wel Me7 Yews (Excellence Through Mentoring), a language learning workshop held on Friday, Feb 1.

Ideas, thoughts, songs and games were shared with other programs on how to enhance and build on the Secwepmectsín language in our classrooms, daycares and homes.

Our group brought a game called. ‘Mr. Mouse, Mr. Mouse Under Which Color House?’ The game consists of different colored houses being laid down, and a mouse is then hidden under one of the houses.

The teacher instructs the children to “Ctseptsipsem-cwiye” (All of you close your eyes.) The mouse is then hidden under a house and the teacher asks: “Ts’kenmefqw tek tsitcw k w7ec-wes re kwékwtne?” (Which color house is the mouse in?)

The children guess which house while learning the various Secwepmectsin words and sentences.

Once the mouse is found, the child says with excitement “Penmímen re kwékwtne!” (I found the mouse)

FIS Speed Skiing World Cup is coming to Sun Peaks Submitted Does skiing down a steep and icy mountain chute at over 170 km/h sound like a good time to you? Well it does for 50 of the world’s fastest skiers, as racers from 10 countries will converge on the Headwalls Speed Skiing Track at Sun Peaks Resort for the 2013 FIS Speed Ski World Cup presented by the Zimmer Autogroup, to be held from Feb. 28 to Mar. 3.

These daring men and women put the extreme in extreme sports and think that to turn is to admit defeat. Dressed in skin tight rubber suits, wearing eight foot long skis and ‘Darth Vader’ looking helmets, these intrepid souls compete in the fastest non-motorized sport on earth and there is only one way to the bottom - straight down. In its 22nd year, this unique and extremely fast ski race is the only event of its kind outside of Europe, and Sun Peaks Resort is the only ski resort in North America to host a FIS Speed

Ski World Cup event.

“In the mid-1980’s there was a bunch of local skiers competing in recreational speed skiing events around B.C. and Alberta, and they decided to host a race at Tod Mountain. Back in the early days, we would prepare the course with only shovels and rakes, and basically race each other for bragging rights and beer,” says Adam Earle, event organizer and long time speed skier. “The World Record on skis is 251.4 km/h (155 mph), but we won’t hit that at Sun Peaks. The record at Sun Peaks is a relatively slow 177.21 km/h (110 mph). Unlike the long steep flat concave tracks in Europe, our course is shorter than most and is convex with two blind rolls and a very short finish area. Racers will go from 0 to over 170 km/h in about eight seconds and then back to 0 km/h in another eight seconds.”

Floor curling at Senior Games

By D. Mark Crown Special to KTW Curling on ice is a well-known sport with a large audience in British Columbia and Canada. There is, however, another version of the game that is very popular with seniors— and one that doesn’t require a winter coat.

Floor curling is played indoors on a smooth surface such

as hardwood or linoleum. It is very similar to ice curling because it shares the same scoring rules and the teams are formed in the same manner.

Each team consists of four players who throw their rocks in the same order in each end. The team with rocks closest to the center dot score points.

Schneider used to compete in ice curling, but has now transitioned to floor curling because of how convenient it is.

“And, this is ideal for people who are kind of worried about slipping on the ice,” he said. “There is no sweeping, but the idea is essentially the same.”

There are a few differences in the game that make floor curling unique.

First, because there is no ice for the rocks to slide on, the curling area is covered with shuffleboard wax or cornmeal. This reduces the friction on the rocks and allows them to slide across the floor.

Another difference is the rocks are delivered from a standing position. The person throwing the rock uses a specially designed stick, which cups the rock. This allows them to push the rock from a standstill with one hand.

Players are not allowed to move when throwing their rocks and there is no sweep-

ing because it would remove the wax from the floor.

Schneider encourages curious seniors to try floor curling for themselves.

“There is no great big learning curve,” he said. “The camaraderie is important. We play a game that takes about an hour and then we stop for coffee and socialize.”

The BC Seniors Games Society is a volunteer non-profit society funded by the provincial government and in co-operation with the BC Games Society, which event manages the Games.

Small gestures add up to big romance (NC) – Valentine’s Day is here, and men everywhere are breaking into a cold sweat.

They’ve bought into the fallacy that romance equals money. But it’s not too late, and when we think of the most romantic and breathtaking stories of romance, they almost never involve flying off to Europe or drinking the most expensive champagne.

It’s usually small gestures like holding hands, kissing in the rain, or simply stargazing that we remember.

Opportunities for romance exist just about anywhere, and this Valentine’s Day, you can spoil your loved one without spending a fortune, like this: 1. Be savvy, not cheap.

Buy flowers that are in season or shop around for deals and avoid delivery charges by buying locally.

2. Write your loved one a romantic letter and place it under their pillow. Or, write multiple love notes and post them throughout the house.

Write something romantic on the bathroom mirror too.

3. Make “love coupons”.

These are really up to your imagination. You can include coupons for a passionate kiss, a favourite meal, breakfast out, or a massage.

4. Take a walk down memory lane and visit some of the special places from your early days of dating.

5. Recreate your partner’s favourite romantic movie scene.

6. Pretend you’re going on a first date. Show up at the door with flowers, dressed up, with your car washed and cleaned. Re-live the first time.

7. Prepare strawberries with fondue chocolate.

8. Cook a romantic dinner together or enjoy take-out by candlelight.

9. Hold hands and walk to a scenic area that has lots of pretty lights.

Thoughts on portrait photography Photographers have been making portraits since the first camera was invented. In spite of the popularity of landscape, wildlife, and sports photography, I believe that most of the pictures that have been made, and still being made, are portraits of people.

Peter Bunnell, in Creative Camera International Year Book 1977, wrote, “There is no single form or style of portraiture. Portraiture means individualism and as such means diversity, self-expression, private point of view. The most successful images seem to be those which exist on several planes at once and which reflect the fantasy and understanding of many.”

I like that, because I recall being bothered by my college photography instructor’s contention, that we should always follow what he referred to as rules for portraiture. Guide lines possibly, but rules? When I examined the great portrait photographers like Irving Penn, Arnold Newman, Bert Stern, Richard Avedon, Eve Arnold, and Annie

Leibovitz, to name a few, in my opinion they are anything but rule followers.

One might be able to recognize the photographic work of Penn, Avedon, or Leibovitz and casually use the words “that’s their style”. However, what marks their work, as Brunnell says, is “individualism .…..selfexpression, (and a) private point of view.”

That is a lot to aspire to for mortal photographers as we struggle to make our portraits something more than mere documentaries.

When I approach portraiture I try to create portraits that are, well, creative.

Sometimes everything works and sometimes it doesn’t.

I want something different in each.

Of course, one must be aware of how a person sees themselves and the circumstances and conditions under which the portrait is made, and I always (using a word coined

by Minor White) previsualize the final portrait. In Ansel Adam’s writings on photography he defined previsualization as, “The

John E n ma n ability to anticipate a finished image before making the exposure.”

I know that for a successful portrait the person I am photographing needs to be the main point of interest. I am aware that a way to capture the attention of the viewer that one could fill the frame with the subject’s face, so there’s really nowhere else to look.

Sometimes it’s the expression on a subject’s face that makes the image. And to get that expression the photographer and subject may need to experiment with different moods and emotions. Portraitists spend much time putting people at ease and making them comfortable in front of a camera. I think it’s all about gaining a person’s trust that we are going to help them look the best they can.

Some photographers get stuck in a rut by only shooting either horizontally, or vertically, or always from the same angle.

To them I suggest mixing up framing in each portrait session so there will be a variety of images.

The internet is packed with “How to” advice on portraiture photography.

Some of it is worth thinking about and some is bewildering. Those serious about bettering his or her portrait photography will select what works best and is the most comfortable.

Everything comes down to one’s personal definition of what a portrait is.

According to Wikipedia, “it is a picture of a person, a description. It can be a photograph, a sketch, a sculpture, but a portrait is so much more than that. It is col-

laboration between the subject, and in this case the photographer.”

Collaboration is the key word for me in that description, and in my experience those portraits I have made that I think are the most successful, is because the person who was in front of the camera was willing to work, or collaborate, with me towards the final image.

Following up on last week’s column there has been lots of discussion by the photographers that attended the strobist meetup. What lens worked, thoughts and suggestions on the lighting, and on posing models. We have been looking at each other’s pictures from that day, and a good critique among friends on what worked and what didn’t is always

You don’t have to lose consciousness to sustain a concussion which causes a change in the chemistry within brain cells, which can impair brain function. Don’t take a ‘knock in the head’ for granted. To discourage Australians to quit smoking, the government started a mandatory new packaging law on December 1 last year. The packages are blank on the back and have antismoking messages on the front like ‘smoking causes blindness’ or ‘smoking causes cancer’ with appropriate graphic pictures accompanying them. The price of a pack of 25 in Australia is around $20... another motivation to quit.

Historically, people died from maladies we don’t hear much of today. Typhoid fever, lead poisoning, bubonic plague and anthrax are examples. Measles and smallpox killed 95% of native South Americans in the 1500s. Thanks to clean water supplies, immunization and antibiotics, our lives are much safer.

Cook on low for 4-5 hours if you prefer to slice you flank steak, or 5-6 hours if you prefer it shredded.

Last fall, 30 Grade 6/7 students from Barriere Elementary went to the ME to WE conference in Vancouver. They returned to our school with enthusiasm and ideas on how to make the world a better place. This past week, in conjunction with the ‘end’ of our penny, the students collected 36 600 pennies ($366) for the “We Create Change” project for Free the Children; one of the many projects that help children around the world. The students went from class to class each day, collecting pennies and filling many bags!

Each bag provides enough money to ensure a permanent source of clean water for a child in a developing country for life. March 1, 1988 – January 25, 2013 Donnie Nicholson was born in McBride, B.C., on March 1, 1988, to his mother, Jo’Ann Kivari, and his father, Don Nicholson.  He passed away suddenly on January 25, 2013.  He leaves behind his parents and sister, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.

He had one sister, Lindsay. Â The family relocated to the coast from McBride, eventually ending up in Barriere when Donnie was only two-and-ahalf years old.

Don was always outgoing and happy during his life; rarely

was he seen without a smile.  He got along well with everyone he met, and made numerous friends along the way.  He was very smart, graduating at the top of his class from Barriere Secondary in 2005.  In his last year of high school, he made it onto the principal’s list for having a report card of straight A’s.  He quickly became enrolled at the Kamloops University, taking a course in plumbing.  Once he obtained all of his qualifications, Donnie worked installing fire sprinkler systems out of Salmon Arm, B.C.,

Apart from being a happy, confident and hardworking man, Donnie was also extremely talented. Â He got his first drum set and guitar when he was 12-years-old and never looked back on his love for music. Â Playing guitar was his favourite pastime, and it was a joy to hear him play it. Â Donnie also took a liking to piano, and he was quite good at that too.

Don excelled and put 100 per cent into everything he ever did. Â His schooling, his company, his jobs, absolutely everything was done tremendously well. Â He was unbe-

lievably talented.

Donnie was extremely loyal to his family and friends.  He liked to help people and he liked to give.  He was caring and thoughtful.  He truly was one in a million.  He loved life and loved the people in it.  There wasn’t a lot of people that he didn’t get along with, he had no enemies.

In the last few months of his life, Donnie was planning on buying a house in Airdrie, Alberta.  He was working towards a prosperous future and he was so close.  The accomplishments he had were that of a man in his 40’s.  U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Donnie was taken from his loved ones much too soon, at the age of 24.  He will be dearly missed by so many people.

Christian women ready for World Day of Prayer North Thompson Star/Journal The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions, and from over 170 countries and regions, who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year, and who have a continuing relationship in prayer and service.

Through the World Day of Prayer, women around the world affirm their faith in Jesus

Christ and share their hopes and fears, their joys and sorrows, and their opportunities and needs.

Every year, a different country is chosen to pick the theme and the prayers to be used in the services celebrated around the world.

This year (2013), the theme and prayers for the World Day of Prayer were chosen by the women of France.

The theme they chose: “I

was a stranger and you welcomed me”.

The celebration of prayer is held on the first Friday of March each year.

This year in Barriere, it will be hosted by St. George’s Catholic Church, on Barriere Town Road.

New Parent Library now open Learning & Literacy Learning & Literacy, in partnership with Barriere Elementary School has developed a library of books for parents.

Feedback from parents, teachers and health professionals led to this library being created.

The books are located in the library at the elementary school, and deal with sensitive health issues such as talking to your children about keeping private parts private and what are private parts.

Drunk driver passes cop on blind corner North Thompson Star/Journal The Barriere RCMP say they would like to remind everyone of the dangers associated with impaired driving, and remind those who continue to drive while under the influence, of the penalties.

On Feb. 7, a member of the Barriere RCMP was travelling Northbound in a marked police vehicle going the speed limit. The truck travelling behind the police officer was travelling far too close, and eventually pulled out and passed the officer when going into

a blind corner.

Upon speaking to the driver, it was determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. Breath samples were obtained, and indicated that the driver was over the legal limit.

The driver now faces a lengthy vehicle impoundment, loss of his drivers licence, driver re-training, and other sanctions under the motor vehicle act.

These penalties are minor compared to the potential loss of life that was caused by his poor decisions that evening.

Premier launches LNG ‘Prosperity Fund’

VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark kicked off the pre-election legislature session Tuesday with a pledge to establish a new fund from natural gas exports to support social programs and pay down debt.

The main purpose of the “British Columbia Prosperity Fund” will be to pay down debt, starting in 2017 when the first liquefied natural gas facilities begins to ship LNG for export from the northern coast to Asian markets. It will be funded by a tax on LNG exports, as well as gas producers’ corporate taxes and traditional natural gas royalty revenues.

The new fund is patterned after Alberta’s Heritage Fund, set up in 1976 as a legacy for Alberta’s oil and gas revenues. The B.C. fund would receive an estimated $100 billion from LNG revenues over 30 years, based on an assumption of five LNG production facilities exporting gas from the Kitimat-Prince Rupert region.

The plan was presented in the throne speech delivered Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon, to open a four-week legislature session leading up to the May 14 provincial election. The key task for the B.C. Liberal government in that session is to pass legislation returning the provincial sales tax to B.C. effec-

tive April 1, and the speech hinted at relieving that tax as one use for the new fund.

“Whether it is eliminating the provincial sales tax, or making long-term investments in areas like education or vital infrastructure that strengthen communities – these are the kinds of opportunities the B.C. Prosperity Fund can provide,” the speech says.

NDP leader Adrian Dix said the government’s focus on LNG development is at odds with its heavily advertised jobs plan, with little mention of forestry, mining, tourism, film and TV production or high technology. The government missed its natural gas revenue targets in a budget update six months ago, so projecting LNG revenues many years in the future is questionable at best, he said.

The government estimates that if B.C.’s LNG mega-project develops as expected, and all of the fund’s revenues are directed to debt reduction, B.C.’s $56 billion debt could be paid off within a decade. The province currently pays about $2.5 billion a year in interest on the debt.

There has been a rush of international investment interest in northeastern B.C.’s shale gas deposits. Companies include Mitsubishi Corp., Shell Canada, China National Petroleum Corporation and Petronas, a trans-national gas player owned by the government of Malaysia.

Canadian Cowboy Country Magazine and BCCHS offer scholarships NEW for 2012 The BCCHS and Canadian Cowboy Country magazine are now offering two additional $500 student scholarships in memory of Mike Puhallo.

These are for Cowboy Poetry and are available in both the US and Canada. The entries have all been received

and viewed by the three judges; Rod Miller, Shar Puhallo, and Dave Longworth.

The first winner was picked unanimously and is “Across the Valley” written by Taryn Yoneda in Victoria, BC. The judges had to put a little thought into a second winning poem as at the start they

all picked a different poem.

After some discussion it was decided that “Ode to a HalfRemembered Past”, written

by Nicholas Guerreiro also of Victoria, would be the second winner.

Congratulations to you both and thanks to the others for submitting your entries.

Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC The recipient for 2013 will be saddle maker Don Loewen!

The BC Cowboy Heritage Society is proud to be able to once again present the Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC. The Society's mandate is to promote and preserve cowboy heritage in the province of BC and this award is an excellent way of recognizing anyone that participates. Don undoubtedly fits the requirements of this award.

The award will be presented on Saturday, March 9th during the evening main feature show at the Calvary Church. Join us to help honor Don Loewen, the 2013 recipient.

Last year the award went to a very deserving Mike Puhallo.

family of six children have lived in the Nicola valley for over twenty two years.

My journey as a cowboy, saddle maker, and teacher began at a young age hearing the stories of the wild but romantic life of a Douglas Lake cowboy from my father and uncle. As a young boy of 12 I got my first leather craft kit from Tandy's. It started a passion in me for leather work. By the time I was fourteen I built my first saddle which I took to Douglas Lake Ranch at the age of sixteen.

One year later I went to a saddle school in South Dakota for six months.

After that it was back to Douglas Lake for another five years of living at the Raspberry and Dry Farm cow camps, getting up at three o'clock in the morning to run the horses in and saddle a bronc in the dark ... that is blowing snot in your face. The only horse whispering going on was me praying I wouldn't get killed, but that's what a young man's memories are made of. This is the backdrop that determined many of the decisions and career choices I made later in life such as becoming a logging contractor and high production tree faller, as well as dangerous snag faller on many large forest fires in the interior and in the East Kootenays. I seem to thrive on that high

risk environment. In 1995 an opportunity came my way to return full time to the risky place of a saddle shop where the worst that could happen was cutting myself with a razor sharp head knife or sewing my lips together on the harness stitcher while setting the timing.

That year I provided the BC High School Rodeo with 16 trophy saddles. I repeated this order for the next five years, all of which I built in my shop in Merritt. This meant that my family would help me out as much as they could.

I had my first student, Jerry McKay from Princeton, in 1997 and then my son Benjamin built four saddles over the next few years. Ben went on to enter and win the 1st BCCHS cowboy craftsmanship student scholarship award.

Please note all workshops and seminars will be held at the Calvary Church and there will be no workshops on Sunday. Workshops are free with admission (except the cost of the Harmonica in Gary Allegretto’s workshop).

We are lucky to once again have some of the top performers in the Western Music industry in our lineup again this year and we’re pleased that they are willing to share some of their thoughts with us in the form of a workshop. If you’re interested in songwriting then be sure to check out the workshops by Gary Fjellgaard, and Dave Stamey, If poetry is your interest then look up Doris Daley, Carol Heuchan, and Rodney Nelson - three completely different types of workshops on poetry.

John Cunningham will do a workshop on “Dialing in Sound” and his wife Eli Barsi will do one called “Art of Showmanship and Live Stage Per-

formance”. Don Loewen, the Joe Marten Award recipient, has agreed to talk about saddles and will gear it to what the participants would like to hear.

Cowboy Hats - yes ... back by popular demand will be Cowboy’s Choice and a workshop geared to what participants would like to hear.

This year we have Gary Allegretto doing a workshop called “Learn to Play Cowboy Harmonica Instantly” which sounds totally amazing! This award-winning “Harmonicowboy” teaches complete beginners to play 4 Western songs instantly - guaranteed! You do have to purchase a ticket for this workshop for $20 which covers the cost of a brand new harmonica and a songbook. Tickets will be available in advance at 1-888-763-2221 and at the General Stores at the Festival while they last (numbers are very limited).

BC Cowboy Heritage Society student scholarships

Scholarships provided by BCCHS have helped many promising students to fulfill their dreams and contribute to society. In the process those who enter increase their awareness of our BC cowboy heritage and the role of the cowboy and ranching in our history.

This year we had forty three qualified entries. Entries can be in any of three categories: original art; cowboy crafts; and the written word. Up to three scholarships are awarded.

This might be one in each category or all in a single category. This year’s judges are Scott Mann, Sherry Carrol and, the Chair of the committee, Doug Halliday.

There are some excellent entries this year. The winners of scholarships are: - Rachelle Hancock of Quesnel for a painting - Cleo Bisanz of North Vancouver for a short story - Kelsey Merkeley of Cranbrook for a bolo tie.

The winners will each receive $500.00 towards future education and the awards will be presented at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival during the main evening feature show on Saturday, March 9th, at the Calvary Community Church.

Flag one down, ask a volunteer, or ask at the information desk at the main door at Forster's or at the church. There will be four shuttle buses running all weekend long. The Horse Barn will once again sponsor the larger shuttle bus which will run between the Festival (at the convention centre) and the Horse Barn.

The Horse Barn will be open on Sunday this year, too, 11:00 AM - 4:00PM. The regular shuttle vans will be available all weekend for hops between the Calvary Church and the Convention Centre, the Horse Barn when necessary, and to the Downtown Businesses including Caffe Motivo (formerly Cowboy Coffee). They will also do pickups at the airport, bus depot, and RV park ... if you know when you’re going to need a lift let them know and they’ll gladly pick you up. Or phone 250-819-7076.

The Country 103 Rising Star Showcase 2013 CJKC, Country 103 will once again sponsor the Rising Star Showcase.

Each year we’ve found new, extremely worthy, main stage entertainers for the following year’s Festival. That gives a pretty good indication as to the quality of performers that

enter this competition.

There are two different categories - one for Cowboy Poets and one for Western Musicians. The two categories are judged separately and there are separate cash prizes $1000 for first place and $500 for both second and

third place in both categories.

This year we’ll be using the same two stages one in the Festival Trade Show area and the other in the Fireside Room at the Church. Sunday the three finalists from both categories will perform on the

main stage in the Dinner Theatre at 3:00 PM. This is a special Rising Star Showcase.

Introducing the 2013 Hall of Fame inductions The Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Kamloops will be Friday evening during the main feature show at the Calvary Community Church. The show starts at 7:00 PM. There will also be a Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Williams Lake on Sunday, April 21st during the intermission of the Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo. The following biographies and photos are of the Kamloops inductees.

Mike Puhallo - Artistic Achievements Mike Puhallo was instrumental in starting the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame and spent many years as president of the BC Cowboy Heritage Society. One of his first jobs out of high school was cowboying for Douglas Lake. For many years he rode out at Big Creek where he was a partner in Twilight Ranch. In recent years he spent hours in the saddle riding for

ranchers in the range above his own home place in Westsyde.

Mike was not only a cowboy and a rancher, but an artist, a horse trainer, a historian, and of course we all know him as a cowboy poet.

He performed far and wide attending gatherings and festivals all over North America and in numerous other venues … always spreading the word

and educating people on the cowboy way of life, the culture and history of the real west. Mike was Canada’s most published Cowboy Poet with six books and three CDs to his name. He was nominated for and received several awards from the AWA and Artscan, as well being presented with the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal.

Stephen “Hyde” Archacan - Working Cowboy

Pooley Ranch - Century Ranch Pooley Ranch - Century Ranch Will Pooley settled at Nicola in the early 1870s.

His cousin Jim Pooley followed and settled on property in the Nicola area in 1885. While searching for more sheep and cattle range, Jim discovered and subsequently homesteaded the current day ranch around 1900.

After his accidental death in the fall of 1911, William John Pooley sailed from England, (almost booking passage on the Titanic) and continued his brother’s dream of creating this fine Ranch. William John had 5 children, 3 of which became heirs to the Ranch ... Gladys, Harold and Bill. Harold passed away in 1976, Gladys in 1979, and Bill in 1998. The first 40 years of the ranch was primarily raising sheep, with cattle being phased in around World War II. 40 years later the cattle operations peaked at 500 mother cows and 15,000 acres. In 1985 Harold’s son Mark purchased the Ranch from the remaining partner Bill and has been the owner ever since, and is operating the ranch as contract grazing for yearlings. Mark is now in the planning stages to pass it on down to his son.

Stephen “Hyde” Archacan - Working Cowboy Stephen Mark Archachan aka Steven aka Hyde was born May 5, 1934 at Quilchena Creek in a willow bush. He began his first job at age 16 in 1950 in the winter time where he worked for Guichon Ranch feeding cows and cowboyin’.

Hyde also broke horses for his family, and for others, for $10 a head. In the 50’s Hyde was one of the fastest calf ropers around, no matter what horse he was on. He has worked at Douglas Lake Ranch.

John Lauder’s Ranch, Blue Ridge Ranch in Lillooet, North Kamloops (Westsyde), and at Lake Jamison.

From 1964 -1968 Hyde took a break from the saddle, moved to Washington to do some logging, but went back to what he loved the most, cowboyin’ in the Nicola Valley. From 1993-2010 Hyde would hang his cowboy hat at the Nicola Ranch. Like a true cowboy he knows the cow inside and out, and has even been known to rope a bear from time to time.

While in his 70s he has won 2 saddles. To this day Hyde is still active in team roping and still works for Judy Guichon and John Lauder.

Sammy Pozzobon Family - Family

Sammy Pozzobon Family - Family Sammy Pozzobon was born in Kamloops in 1927, 26 years after his father Sam Pozzobon Sr left Traviso Italy to start a new life on a homestead in Pinantan, BC. Sam Sr and his wife Assunta had five children. All of the Pozzobon boys were bitten by the rodeo bug.

At age 15, Sammy entered his first rodeo in Falkland. In 1972, thirty years after entering his first rodeo, Sammy became a lifetime gold card member of the Cdn Pro Rodeo Association.

Sammy married Lillian Cherriman in 1956, and they had three children, Cheryl, Keith and Kevin. Sammy passed on the love of fast horses and rodeo to all of them.

Sammy and Lillian later lived on property on Pemberton Range which they purchased in 1966. One of the first things built at the new place was an outdoor arena followed by an in-

door arena. Sammy still competed himself, but once the children were old enough the kids became his priority. All his children went on to compete at amateur and professional levels of rodeo, and worked on the ranch alongside Sammy and Lillian, both cowboying and farming. With the marriages of their children, new talent and skills were integrated into the family, and eight grandchildren gave Sammy a new batch of kids to coach. Sammy passed away in 2008, yet Lillian and their children’s families continue to live and work on the place at Pemberton Range.

Keith has assumed the majority of operations of the ranch.

The four Williams Lake Inductees are: Larry Ramstad (Working Cowboy & Horseman), Archie Williams (Competitive Achievements), Frank Teer (Ranching Pioneer), John Dodd (Working Cowboy).

This Year's

Abe Zacharias An award-winning vocalist and songwriter who has performed in many parts of Canada and the US. His 1993 appearance on the stage of the Grand Ol' Opry and his 1997 Golden Heart Award (Country Gospel Male Vocalist of the Year) are two of his career highlights. Abe has gained a legion of fans through his more than 35 years of making music. He was especially pleased when one of them, country star Paul Brandt, credited Abe as being one of his important musical influences.

Recently one of Abe's songs Prairie Homestead from his Songs of the Sage and Saddle album has been receiving extensive airplay by the European Country Music Association. In December 2009 it went to #10 in the Netherlands and #8 in Belgium.

Then in January of 2010 it went to #2 in Norway.

Alan Moberg Born in Pender Harbour, BC, he has worked on the sea as a fisherman and on the land. His songs reflect the affinity for people who live close to the land, including the Native Indians. Alan Moberg has received an Award from BMI Canada (Socan) for "an outstanding contribution to Canadian music" as well as three from the BC Country Music Association during his long musical history. He has written, and sung, about BC in general, for well over 35 years! One of his best known songs

is The Williams Lake Stampede. Alan Moberg seems to be reinvigorated with new recordings and a return to concert stages. He does for BC's interior ranchland and coastal rainforest what Ian Tyson does for Alberta cow country and Stan Rogers did for the Great Lakes. Moberg's melodic voice reaches into people's souls. Alan sings and listening hearts respond. Audiences love him. Alan was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2008!

Allen Christie In a similar style to Ian Tyson or Tom Russell, but not without his own unique inflections, Allen Christie is poised to carry high the torch of North American Cowboy Music. His warm report and solid delivery of self-penned gems that are earmarked to become classics in this genre make Allen an act that's well worth getting out to see. Allen Christie has been touring North America with a driving acoustic sound that has been getting a lot of attention.

By blending elements of alternative country, western, and bluegrass music, Allen has taken his roots based sound to new levels. He has recorded 4 albums, all featuring songs he wrote reflecting his rural Alberta upbringing.

Songs that paint vivid pictures of what life is like on the Prairies - you get to share the hopes and dreams of the people that work the land along with their special moments, successes and failures, and ultimately, their ability to not just survive rural living, but to celebrate it. His talent as a songwriter has not gone without recognition. Allen's songs have made it to the big

screen as part of movie soundtracks, TV documentaries, and TV and radio commercials.

Bryn Thiessen Bryn is self described Rancher/Poet/Cowboy and an extremely unique individual. He was raised with 4 sisters and says that he never learned to talk before going to school because he couldn't get a word in edge wise. In an attempt to make up for lost time Bryn began to write and recite poetry.

Although Bryn is mostly known as a cowboy poet he says he'd rather rope a cow then talk about it. He raises commercial cattle and ranch horses as well as hiring out to neighboring outfits. No matter what he's doing he continues to find something to feed his slightly deranged mind. Bryn's first tape was made in 1990. It was followed by a book in 1994. Next, was a video in 2000, with the combined efforts of Chris and Sharky Schauer. From this video Bryn also produced a CD. Bryn lives with his wife and three kids at Helmer Creek Ranch, in Sundre, Alberta.

Bud Webb Bud began his professional career in the music industry in the late 60's touring throughout Canada with his band "Bud Webb & The Outriders".

By the mid 70's they had two albums under their belt and many successful tours including working with Marg Osborne and Don Messer of the "Don Messer Show". Today,

Bud has settled in Lake Errock, BC. In 2002 Bud was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame. He continues to stay active with live performances and annual Santa Claus appearances.

He has released three CDs: "Cowboy-Ography", "Enjoy a Seniors Moment", and "I Just Don't Look Good Naked Anymore". The latter was live from the Merritt Mountain Fest. Now enjoying his eighth decade he'll be back to perform a few sets throughout the weekend.

Carol Heuchan Australian Champion Bush Poet, seven times Laureate winner and also the winner of the richest prize in poetry writing history - a thirty-four thousand dollar tractor!! (which she reckons she can't drive for nuts). A fair dinkum Aussie horsewoman, she has been riding, competing, and working with horses all her life - including in 'Man from Snowy River' country. She is an International horse judge and horse events commentator. But poetry has taken over, with four books and four CDs (award winning) to her credit. A new CD, 'Partners' is to be released for 2013. Needless to say, her heart is in horse poetry. But it sure doesn't stop there. Her writing runs the gamut from true life experiences, from quaint to quirky, from heart wrenching to hysterical! 2013 will be her fourth US performance tour and this time on to Canada! Boy, she is champing at the bit!

Dale Justin a 17 year old cowboy in the making with a desire to sing country and western songs, lives on a ranch, and one day, have his own cattle and horses. He loves to play his guitar, fiddle and mandolin and to sing. Dale's love for music started when he was very young as he grew up listening to Wilf Carter, his Grandmother and his Great Uncle sing old country songs. In January, 2008, Dale started playing the guitar with his Grandmother. After a few months he wanted to play the mandolin so she taught him how to play it and in August of the same year, he taught himself to play the fiddle. Dale always liked cowboy songs with yodels in them. Now his desire is to learn to yodel and sing songs just like the cowboys. Dale plays in a family band playing with his Grandmother and mother at local music festivals, community events and Senior Citizen Centers in Fort St. John and surrounding areas. Dale, under the name Dale McEachern, played the Annual 100 Mile House Cowboy Concert in February, 2012 and won

the Country 103 Rising Star Showcase at last year's Kamloops Cowboy Festival.

Dave McClure Living on a working cattle ranch homesteaded by his grandfather, Dave McClure has lived the cowboy life and uses the experience to shape his cowboy poetry and songwriting. He can make you laugh and cry with the stories he portrays of the cowboy way of life and at the end of his performance you will either be glad you are a cowboy or wish you were one. He has, these last few years, melded his love for composing piano music in with his cowboy poetry. He claims it is only because he wanted to prove that cowboys can play instruments that have more than six strings. At 43 years old he and his wife Joy and their two children, Andrew 10,

and Rachel 13, enjoy all that the life of raising cattle and riding horses can give. Their home is North Central Washington State on the Colville Indian Reservation near the town of Nespelem, about 30 miles east of Omak. He has performed at the Lewis and Clark Western Music Festival in Lewiaton, Idaho, the Dollar Watch Cowboy Jamboree in Winthrop, Washington, the Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering in Ellensburg, Washington, and recently attended and performed at the annual awards banquet of the Western Music Association in Albaquerque, New Mexico.

Dave Stamey Dave has been bucked off and stomped by many horses. He has been stepped on by mules and dragged around branding pens by cattle of many sizes.

He is an entertainer now, and makes his living inflicting himself upon innocent people at music festivals, agricultural banquets, and backyard barbecues. He finds he prefers this. He has been voted Entertainer of the Year, Male Performer of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year by the Western Music Association, and Male Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists. He lives in Nipomo, California.

He bets you don't know where that is.

Doris Daley Doris has been an emcee and featured performer at every cowboy festival in Canada as well as several in the United States, including Texas, Califor-

nia, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Montana and Oregon. In 2004 she was named Best Female Cowboy Poet in North America by the Academy of Western Artists, the first time any Canadian, male or female, has won the cowboy poetry category. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 she was named one of the Top 5 cowgirl poets in North America by the Western Music Association, with other Top 5 nominations for best collaboration and best cowboy poetry CD. At the November, 2009 WMA Awards Show, Doris won top honours for Best Female Cowboy Poet and best cowboy poetry CD. As with her AWA Will Rogers Awards, she's the first Canadian to bring home top honours in the cowboy poetry categories.

Eli Barsi Driven by her passion

for music, committed to giving her best, and strives for excellence on and off stage. For the past 22 years Eli has been working as a professional musician. Early in her career she performed mainly in the provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. After a few years of nonstop shows, she moved to Nashville Tennessee, where she honed her craft as a songwriter. Following several years of roadwork both sides of the border, she started to record albums, release radio singles, and moved on to the bigger stages. Eli was hired to perform with the legendary Sons of the Pioneers in the year 2002, and since this show, she has been based out of Branson, Missouri.

Eli is a diverse artist that can include a large variety of genres in her shows such as, Western Roots, Gospel, New Country, Bluegrass, Classic Country, Folk, and Cowboy.

With a 3, 4, or 5 piece band or on stage alone with her guitar, Eli is a crowd pleaser.....

Frank Gleeson This Williams Lake rancher is known as the fastest, funniest, cowboy poet in the west.

His original poems are delivered in an easy going, humorous style.

Frank has entertained audiences across Canada and the US. One of the highlights of his career was an invitation to perform his poetry at a Farm Aid Concert in Atlanta, Georgia alongside famous singing stars.

Regrettably he wasn't able to attend, but just being invited was an honour.

Numerous dignitaries have been entertained by Frank, including the Lieutenant Governor of BC, the Premier of BC, mayors and council members.

He was recognized by the 2003 city council when he was declared "official poet of Williams Lake". On several occasions, Frank has been nominated by the Academy of Western Artists to receive the Will Rogers Award for male cowboy poet of the year. In 2003, he placed in the top five.

His songs and poems have been played on radio and television throughout Canada, United States, and Europe. He has been a feature entertainer many times at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada and the Kamloops Cowboy Festival. In March 2010, Frank was inducted into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame in the artistic category. Frank writes all his own material and has five books of poetry and has recorded four CDs of his poems and songs.

Gary Allegretto American Cowboy Magazine call's Gary "Amazing. You've never seen - or heard anything like him". Indeed, Gary is quite simply one of the best harmonica players you'll ever see or hear. As if

that wasn't enough, he is also a truly remarkable singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His talents have earned him five Western Music Association Award nominations, including Outstanding Entertainer and Outstanding Instrumentalist. He has been honored with a Best of the West Award and two Grammy Award considerations for his unique brand of songwriting and music. His jaw-dropping performances have captivated audiences at concerts and festivals around the globe. His music draws from the very roots of Western music and his imaginative and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny songs paint pictures from his diverse life experience (including work as a ranch hand, forest firefighter, and bouncer in a couple rough honky-tonks).

Gary Fjellgaard Gary was honoured with the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Award September 11th, 2005. Born on the Canadian Prairies in Rose Valley Saskatchewan, Gary moved to Prince George as a teenager.

In 1970 music became a full time occupation. He has entertained at Cowboy gatherings from Calgary to Tucson. He now lives on Gabriola Island, on Canada's West Coast with his wife Lynne. They have four daughters and many grandchildren! As busy as Gary's schedule might get, he still finds time to help the budding song writer at seminars and workshops from the Yukon to Montana! His shows range from small theatre to the main stage of some of Canada's top festivals like the Big Valley Jamboree, the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, Canada

Day Celebrations on Parliament Hill, and of course the Kamloops Cowboy Festival! He looks back on a rewarding career and gratefully acknowledges with fondness, the hundreds of towns and cities, and thousands of listeners who have been touched by his music.

The Gordie West Band You may have seen this dual at one of many cowboy festivals in BC and Alberta or promoting the Calgary Stampede throughout North America. Gord West and Mike Dygert (aka The Gordie West Band) are a couple of guys with a thirst for the folklore of the west and a yen to play good, old cowboy music!

Gordie West, who lives o short drive north of Kamloops, began playing in country bands in his teens, spent close to 20 years touring overseas where he released 5 albums and now combines a singing career with the wandering life of a Tour Director. He has a voice range that can showcase the ballads of Marty Robbins and the yodel stylings of Wilf Carter. Mike Dygert hails from Three Hills, a small town northeast of Calgary, Alberta. When he's not with Gord, he's usually off playing with "Horsefeathers", a country dance band.

He has a dry wit that will leave you wondering "where'd he come from" and "how'd he get there"! Together they make the music come alive with song and good humour.

Hugh McLennan Hugh and his wife Billie live the life they love - shared with their cattle and horses in some beautiful country! Hugh has spent a lot of years training horses for the public and specializes in starting colts and developing them for ranch work. He spent many

years working in radio and TV but his heart was always in ranching and cowboy life. Sixteen years ago Hugh started the Spirit of the West radio program with the objective to bring the livestock industry to the general public using the real words of the people on the land along with the music and poetry of the west. As well as many other awards, Hugh's show was named Canada's Best Agricultural Radio Program in two different years. His speaking engagements take him all over North America. We're happy to have Hugh back this year after the position of a judge for "Road to the Horse" took him away last year.

Jill Gunnarson Aka Gypsy Jill, hails from Grand Forks, BC. With a natural passion for performing and visual arts stemming from a family of artists, Jill has written poetry since childhood as a way to expand her creative talents.

Jill moved to Kootenays in 1985 from her farm homestead in Aldergrove to a small hobby farm where she enjoys the company of her critters and her overriding passion for dog rescue specializing in rough collies. Having performed as a singer, musician and clown, she has recently found her niche as a western / cowboy poet. Many of her poems, written since 2006, are centered on the gold rush era and the experiences of women during that time.

She has performed as the mistress of ceremonies with a traditional cancan dance troupe at Kamloops Cowboy Festival, Williams Lake Stampede, Rock Creek Fall Fair, BC Cattleman's Association annual meeting, an event at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, and many smaller events.

Les Folles Jambettes This high spirited act has been kicking up their heels since 1997.

Cowboy Times March 7 - 10, 2013 11 Based on the historical dance of the boomtown mining days of BC, Les Folles Jambettes present the traditional Cancan and bring it into the 21st century. The 10 member group sets the stage for their colorful dance numbers with their unique character and energy. Lose yourself in their ruffles and feathers - step back in time to the Wild West with the Crazy Legs Dancers!

Mag Mawhinney Award-winning, western roots poet who was recently named the 2012 Cowgirl Poet of the Year for the Will Rogers Awards, sponsored by the Academy of Western Artists in the US. She has been a featured performer at every major cowboy festival and other events in Western Canada and into the US. Her recitations have also been aired on TV and radio.

Her passion for writing extends to freelancing and she's been published internationally in numerous magazines, anthologies, newspapers and web sites. In recent years, Mag has turned her hand to songwriting and her fourth poetry book, "Western Spirit", released in 2012, contains poems, songs and photos. The book also includes a 13 track music CD in which eight musicians from Canada and the US sing the melodies they've composed for her lyrics. Mag resides on Vancouver Island.

Matt Johnston Matt's song writing talent and love of the cowboy culture have produced some wonderful songs. Matt has been writing and performing at Cowboy Festivals, concerts and gatherings for over a decade.

In 2002 and 2003 he was nominated for the "Rising Western Star Award" by the Acad-

emy of Western Arts in Fort Worth and again in 2010 for the "Male Western Vocalist". His debut recording features eight of his original songs and is put together with twenty three poems by Canada's Cowboy Poet, Mike Puhallo. After focusing on his homestead and family life for a few years Matt is shifting his energy back towards music and is currently working on a new Album. Matt hangs his hat in Upper Clearwater which is surrounded by Wells Gray Park. Matt and his wife Ursula are both farriers. He divides his spare time between family, homestead, horses and working in his saddle shop. Busy guy, hey!

Matt Robertson Quote, "I want to influence people with my music that is why I write songs", and that he does. Cowboys and cowboys-at-heart, from age 3 to 83, are able to personally connect to the poetic tunes of Matt Robertson. Matt is a singer/songwriter whose lyrics are shaped by real life experiences gained from rodeo, cowboying, horse training and ranch work in Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, and Alberta. Matt recorded his first CD 'Old Roan Horse' after winning the 2008 Rising Star competition at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival.

This album includes fun songs about going down the rodeo trail in his '1985 Lincoln Town Car' riding 'Them Broncs' while 'Chasing Those Dreams Made of Gold', along with songs that reflect his time on the range, like 'Call Me Cowboy' and 'Old Vaquero'. Since then he has performed at various venues and Cowboy Festivals throughout western Canada and the United States. In 2012 Matt release his second CD, 'The Voice'. This album is a compilation of easy-listening, heartfelt songs ranging from almost gospel to ballads of the western lifestyle.

Through songs like 'Horseman' and 'Kickapoo' he describes the

close bond between horse and rider, while songs like 'Good Times' and 'Cowboys Wife' describe a cowboys desire for 'Living the Dream'.

Mereline Griffith Mareline writes original cowboy poetry. A lifetime spent in a ranching environment, gives her a wealth of memories and real life experiences. Much of hers work features horses - "big or small she loves them all" and they all find their way into her poems. Mereline has two self published books of original cowboy poetry.

She also claims bragging rights to a few recorded songs. "Wagon Trails to Glory" was recorded in 1995 by Billy Melville (who wrote the music). It was recorded again in 2008, by her grandaughter (in-law) Tiffany Dowhan. This song has been getting it's fair share of air time on CFCW in Alberta.

Mereline's poem, "He Rode the Cyclone", tells the true story of the great bronc rider Tommy Three Persons. Recorded by Latigo, it has been used several times in the Calgary Stampede Grand Entry. Her work has been published in Canadian Cowboy Country magazine and a big highlight was winning the Country 103 Rising Star Competition in 2008, at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival.

Naomi Bristow A 14 year old cowgirl with a great love and talent for singing country music. In the past few years Naomi has travelled across the countryside in Canada and the United States performing for thousands while being rewarded with kindness and admiration from folks of every age.

Naomiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love for old

tyme traditional country music lead her to self taught yodeling. When Naomi was 8 years old she saw a little girl on television yodeling and decided it was something she would like to try, so she sent away to Nashville for a tape and booklet of "Margo Smith Learn to Yodel".

For the past four years Naomi has spent endless hours practicing and improving her yodeling techniques. She has been adopted by the Queen of Yodeling "Janet McBride" whom has offered immense support and greatly appreciated direction.

Naomi was featured in the top 200 across Canada for the Canada's Got Talent 2012 season.

She gained exposure and notoriety from the amazing experience.

Also among the many accolades received the past years Naomi cherishes the "Fans Choice Award" from the Havelock Jamboree, the "Country 103 Rising Star Award" at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival and The Western Music Association "Youth Yodeler of the Year". On Canada Day Naomi received awards from Municipal, Provincial, and Federal Governments for her outstanding achievements in music.

Rob Dinwoodie and Dixon Zalit The cowboy Team of Rob & Dixon provide a cornucopia of music from traditional cowboy to western swing.

Most of the material the duo performs are Rob's originals accompanied by the multi-instrumentalist Dixon Zalit on mandolin, guitar, Spanish guitar and yes even a ukulele. Songs of the historical BC west about the BX Express and Val Haynes will keep audiences toes tapping the entire evening from Rob's new CD "Hands Up" ...a tribute to Billy Miner.

The two-some regularly entertain audiences at the Historic O'Keefe Ranch, Vernon during the summer at the ever popu-

lar "Cowboy Dinner Show" and throughout BC where-ever songs of the west are sung.

Rodney Nelson Raised on a ranch on the Mouse River near Towner, North Dakota, Rodney Nelson, the missus and their two children have lived on the Sims Creek ranch near Almont, North Dakota, since 1984. In addition to ranching, Rod works as a parttime brand inspector, horse trainer and aging rodeo performer.

Audiences throughout America know Rod as a popular rural humorist, entertainer, banquet speaker, and columnist.

Rodney Nelson's regular Up Sims Creek column appears bi-weekly in the "Country Living" section of Farm and Ranch Guide.

Shirley Field An exceptionally talented yodeller, Shirley is a musical treasure.

At the age of nine she announced that "I'm gonna be a Yodeller"!

Shirley wrote a book with Rudy Robbins called, How to Yodel the Cowboy Way, which has inspired yodellers around the world. She has performed with the likes of Loretta Lynn and Marty Robbins. In 1962 she sang at the Grand Ol' Opry. Shirley was inducted into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame in March 2000.

See the Hall of Fame Photo Album. She has a book and CD on how to yodel and over the years has taught many of our feature performers to yodel - some of them at her workshop on how to yodel, at the Festival. Shirley was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

Sons of the Louisiana Hayride The Cowboy segment of the Louisiana Hayride Live Stage Show has been hugely popular. Now, the Cowboys will be coming to the 17th Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival.

The audience will be absolutely delighted with such great 'cowboy' songs as: I'm An Old Cow Hand; Tumbling Tumbleweeds; Cool Water and Happy Trails. Come out and see them on stage March 7th and 8th!

Tiffany Dowhan Tiffany is a down to earth Alberta girl with an honest, yet unique vocal style. Tiffany and her husband, Chris reside on their family ranch which was established in 1931, near Goodridge, Alberta. Training quarter horses for roping and riding is their passion and Tiffany loves to share their roots & life experiences through her music. She has released over 5 singles to Canadian radio. Her 2nd single "Hey Cowboy" hit #1 on 790 CFCW Radio in 2007.

Tiffany also released "Wagon Trails to Glory" a tribute song to the late and great World Professional Chuckwagon Driver, George Normand in 2008. Her single,"That Hat" hit #2 on 790 CFCW Radio in 2011 and was added on over 30 radio stations Canada wide!

Her latest single and title track of her latest album, "High Heels & Spurs" has also been added across the country. "High Heels & Spurs" truly portrays Tiffany, "Glamour on the outside, Cowgirl on the inside!" Tiffany is a true cowgirl at heart!! Tim Hus Tim has a voice sweeter than a Husqvarna chainsaw, a wit that is sharper than rusty barbed wire, and a list of songs longer than a Saskatchewan fence line! Following his acclaimed CD Bush Pilot Buckaroo comes the highly anticipated fifth album (his 2nd for Stony Plain Records) Hockeytown joining Corb Lund and the legendary Ian Tyson on the label. Hus comes at his audience like a runaway rig, while firing off image-laden lyrics with the intensity of a western gunslinger.

Tim Ross A singer/songwriter/ guitar slinger who hails from Wycliffe, in the East Kootenays of BC. His day job as a range management consultant, which translates to "cowboy with a degree", grants him the privilege of riding the range and making a living in the saddle. His night job is playing in bands of all sorts, but his true love is "Western" music. His songwriting influences range from rock-androll and blues to rockabilly and cowboy songs, but his subject matter is the West. The songs on his first CD, "Blue Sky, Green Grass" are set in the Kootenays, the Cariboo-Chilcotin and the Canadian prairies. These songs, and those on his new CD, reveal his humour, and his love of the land, people, dogs, horses and cattle that make up the New West. Tim and Tracey also raise grass-fed beef, and spend lots of time with their horses and border collies.
