It all started with Mick, a dog Linda Rohdin had never set eyes on.

Rohdin and her husband Eric had settled in Port Alberni for retirement, bringing their mastiff Finn along with them. When Finn died, Rohdin started looking for a rescue dog. She felt she had the time, funds and heart to help a dog that might not have a good chance of adoption.

She started searching on the Internet for Canadian dog rescue sites and hit it off with the owner of one place in Battleford, Sask.

Since Eric was visiting the area at the time, she made the decision to take Mick— who was suffering from a shoulder injury and hip dysplasia. She asked Eric to bring the dog home before either of them had even met him.

Less than two years after David Whitworth brought Puddle Duck racers to Port Alberni, the Alberni PD Racer Club has won the rights to host the 10th annual world championship.

The worlds will come to the Alberni Inlet June 29–30, 2013.

Chris Finlayson has been named the world championship event co-ordinator.

Waterfront meetings set

The groups running the Waterfront North Study are holding two public information gathering sessions next week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the public is invited to drop in at the Hupacasath House of Gathering on Beaver Creek Road between 4–9 p.m.

A second session is planned for Thursday, Feb. 21 from 4–9 p.m. at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

Uptown eyes new sign plan

Merchants in the South Port area have pitched a sign plan to city staff that could see a combination of way finding signs and fixed signs designating the uptown shopping district.

Kevin Wright of Steampunk Café and Coffee House says merchants would like to brand the district with the catch phrase, “Shop.

Eat. Discover.”

Wright was to present the sign plan to city council at a special meeting on Wednesday night, after the News went to press.

Trustees voted unanimously at Tuesday’s trustee meeting before a crowd of more than 100 people at the Alberni District Secondary School theatre.

“This isn’t over.

But we’ve bought some time to make a decision,” trustee chair Larry Ransom said.

Trustees didn’t shy away from making a tough decision, John Bennie said. “We made the best decision for the educational soundness of our district,” Bennie said.

“We’re going to find another way. It’s important for the educational stability of our district.”

No detailed plan was laid out about how trustees will make up the $300,000 they would have saved by closing a school.

The district is also still facing other cost pressures such as pension fund payment increases as well as replenishing the contingency fund.

Listening to people in public engagement sessions gave trustees sober second thoughts about closing a school, Ransom said.

One factor that tipped the balance was the possible domino affect of closing a school.

The provincial election is in May, and at least one parent wondered if trustees were hoping for breathing room if an NDP majority is elected.

“I’m not going to bank on it,” Ransom said.

“Whatever provincial government is in power, they can only do so much with what money they have.”

If there was anything that could have been done differently it would

have been getting the public involved sooner, Ransom said. “We could have engaged earlier, but the logistics of it just weren’t there at the time and we were tied up with the opening of the new ADSS,” Ransom said.

Wood school parent Jessie McKay says she’s “happy” but “optimistically cautious” at the announcement.

The process pitted parents and schools against one another, something the community needs to address, McKay said.

“It caused a divide that hopefully we will heal from now,” McKay said. “Next time we need to band together and support one another sooner.”

The development was a victory for kids, but parents too should have learned something.

“Inform yourself, go to meetings and hold trustees accountable for the decisions they make that affect us,” said Gaelle Frey, a Wood school parent who is running for a seat on the school board in Saturday’s by-election.

“We set out to stop a school from being closed and we accomplished that.”

According to Pinkerton, a marshaling program will be instituted that will scale back the walk limit for students while still providing the same service, he said.

Presently in SD 70, kindergarten to

Grade 3 students have to walk up to four kilometres to catch a school bus.

Students from Grades 4-12 have to walk five kilometres.

SD 70 has thus far abided by the regulation, Pinkerton said, even though the cookie-cutter policy didn’t exactly apply to

the Alberni Valley’s rural areas. But that’s about to change.

In September, marshaling areas will be established for students to group at and be picked up by a school bus. The new areas will require students to walk an average of one to two kilometres.

Transportation by water taxi still remains an issue, Pinkerton said.

The cost to take a bus to school is roughly $1,100 per student per year. The cost to take a water taxi to school is $6,500.

he society overseeing construction of a new shelter on Eighth Avenue is reaching out to neighbours who are opposed to the plan by drafting a “good neighbour” agreement.

It is just one step in moving forward to making the shelter a reality, Port Alberni Shelter Society spokesperson Myron Jespersen told city councillors last week.

The society commissioned geotechnical and environmental surveys, both of which find that the Eighth Avenue location is suitable for a new shelter, Jespersen said.

As well, meetings are scheduled with the project architect, Victoria’s Jensen Group, who will work on concepts that will shape a schematic design and site plan.

“It basically approves of our intention to build a new shelter on the land and commits to proceeding toward a final agreement,” Jespersen said.

“The MOU is what triggered us to proceed with the plan.”

While Jespersen said progress is being made with neighbouring residents, some feel the shelter still overshadows their concerns.

“No one considers what the people in our neighbourhood have to deal with,” said Lesley Silverstone, whose Eighth Avenue house will face the front door of the proposed shelter.

More than 150

residents have outlined concerns dealing with drug use and selling, theft and property invasion which stems from some shelter residents, Silverstone said.

Also a concern to residents is the number of social services wedged into the area.

“There’s the Salvation Army, several group homes, Service BC, seniors facilities and an elementary school loaded into the area,” Silverstone said.

“No place else in the city carries that kind of load.”

Silverstone has raised her concerns with VIHA and with city officials and intends to keep the heat on them by sending letters of concern about the development from more than 150 residents.

“We’re asking them to reconsider their decision,” she said after making a presentation to

council on Monday (Jan. 28).

Silverstone was invited to participate in the shelter process but declined, Jespersen said.

Residents may have little recourse and a new shelter may be a forgone conclusion, City Manager Ken Watson said in December.

The land the shelter wants for a new facility is owned by VIHA, not the city., Watson said.

The site is already properly zoned, therefore no public process is required.

City councillors already approved the plan shelter officials brought to them.

All that remains is a building permit application, Watson said.

As I lay my hands on newborns to ninety year olds, I look for signs from that person that my adjustment is having an effect. And across the board, the younger the patient, the more immediate the effect.

A few years ago, I began providing care for a wonderfully alive and sensitive three year old I’ll call Amy. As she relaxed on my adjusting table, facedown, my hands migrated repeatedly to a subluxation (spinal bone out of alignment pressing on a nerve and shutting off life) in her midback. Although I’m used to being drawn to different parts of the spine that need care, the effect my extremely light pressure was having on my young and very sensitive practice member was truly unique to the very young. As my fingers reached the point of nerve interference, she lightly and steadily began to peacefully undulate and writhe. I held a light touch on each subluxated vertebrae and the reaction was the same. She was doing the twist! A moment later I would return to the same spot but she wouldn’t move. It was so inspiring to see that her body, through its inborn wisdom, was using my light pressure to adjust itself.

Because babies and young children are so new to their bodies, subluxations are acutely felt by them. The same subluxations in older kids and adults which have gone uncorrected for years don’t produce the same eager sensitivity.

The “older” subluxation has “buried” itself more deeply in the spine and like a bad smell in a bathroom, the body doesn’t recognize it after the passage of time.

After checking hundreds of infants, babies and kids, I know that Chiropractic health care is not just about making them “feel better.” It’s about turning on their innate capacity to heal by using the spine as a way of waking up the nervous system in order to silently and powerfully support health. City councillors adopted the new process at their Jan. 14 meeting.

The process will see

a new 10-minute time period added to the start of each council meeting.

A maximum of five speakers will be given two minutes each to address council on agenda items or issues relevant to council.

“There are some restrictions but it’s basically a free-forall,” Douglas said.

The new agenda item is not meant to replace question period at the end of council meetings.

Participants will be chosen by show of hands at the start of each meeting.

Alberni man nets sex crimes sentence Speakers WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A Supreme Court Justice has sentenced a Port Alberni man to 22 months in jail for two counts of sexual assault involving young girls.

Justice Lauri Fenlon handed down the sentence to William Rennie in the Port Alberni Federal Court on Tuesday morning.

Fenlon further sentenced Rennie to one year’s probation, a 10-year weapons prohibition, and to have no contact with his victims or their mother.

Rennie was also ordered to supply a sample of his DNA to the federal data bank, to not hold a position of authority with children for 20 years, and to register as a sex offender for life.

It is Rennie’s first

conviction for a sex charge but he gets a lifetime sex offender registration because the incident involved two victims and two separate sexual assault charges, Crown prosecutor Christina Proteau said. Rennie was originally convicted of the offenses in October 2012.

The Crown sought a 24-month jail sentence and three years’ probation.

Rennie’s lawyer asked for 12 to 18 months incarceration at a provincial institution for sex offenders where there is treatment and no threats of violence.

Pre-sentence and forensic assessment reports read aloud in court noted that Rennie had a history of lying, substance abuse, and mental health issues which required a psychiatric

stay in hospital in 2009. The report also noted that Rennie was considered a moderate to moderately high risk to re-offend.

Rennie was convicted of spousal assault in 2010 after slapping a girlfriend across the face twice and threatening to take her daughter to Parksville with him.

In her reasons for judgment, Fenlon noted that both of Rennie’s victims were minors (under age seven at the time of the offenses). She also found that the position of trust he was in when left with the girls was an aggravating factor in the offense.

In a statement of facts to the court, Proteau said the matter came to light after one of the victims disclosed her ordeal to RCMP over two statements

starting in February 2011. The second victim described the same experiences over three different statements beginning in March 2011.

The disclosures had a common theme: the mother leaving them alone with Rennie, whom she had an intimate relationship with, while she went to work. Rennie then sexually touched and kissed, and on one occasion displayed full frontal nudity to the girls as he walked to the bathroom.

The girls’ and their families’ lives have been disrupted, Proteau said. “They should have been in school and just living the lives of regular six-year olds,” she said. “There may have been no threats or violence. But the sexual assault of a child is inherently violent.”

Not all liked Family Day Monday marked B.C.’s first Family Day statutory holiday, which for most people breaks that long three-month stretch between New Year’s Day and Easter.

B.C. residents now enjoy 10 stat holidays (11 if your employer is nice enough to throw in Boxing Day), which ties us with Saskatchewan as the most generous province for the coveted long weekend.

While many families took advantage of the extra day off, there were many who greeted the day with trepidation, knowing they couldn’t afford it.

When Premier Christy Clark announced the creation of Family Day in October 2011, she expected that by now a better economy would balance out the extra costs to businesses.

But many small retailers and companies are struggling as the economy remains flat at best. They are paying out more due to a higher minimum wage, and all are now contemplating the cost and hassle of returning to the GST/PST system.

Having Family Day on Feb. 11 while other provinces recognize it on Feb. 18 has also been problematic for businesses needing to make out-of-town orders; effectively tying up two Mondays in a row.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business estimates a small business with five employees shelled out about $1,135 for Family Day and it will cost small and medium sized businesses $42 million in lost productivity.

Municipal and provincial governments will also shell out more for essential service employees and the hundreds of thousands of people on the public payroll.

This holiday can be seen as rather blatant pandering to the electorate by the the B.C. Liberals, or an attempt to give hard-working B.C.ers a break – perhaps it’s a bit of both.

Independent MLAs have big dream TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

ICTORIA – Imagine a province where party leaders are chosen in an independently supervised vote, with 12-year-olds, dead people and pets prevented from voting.

Imagine a province where roving gangs of influence-seekers aren’t allowed to join multiple parties, and the rule is actually enforced. One where corporations and unions have to advertise in their own name instead of financing political parties and then disclosing millions in donations months after the election is over.

Imagine a province where elections are held based on audited financial statements, not a collection of election promises that will be dismissed as a work of fiction by the new regime if the incumbent party is

defeated.

A cat joined the B.C. Liberal Party to support Christy Clark. Adrian Dix won the NDP leadership with the help of bags of $10 bills stapled to new memberships. As parties go to online voting, multiple PIN numbers may be activated from the same phone number or the same address.

These and other glaring problems with our partybased political system were highlighted last week in a set of reforms proposed by three independent MLAs. Vicki Huntington broke the party choke-hold on B.C. politics by getting elected as an independent in Delta South in 2009. Bob Simpson was kicked out of the NDP caucus shortly after winning re-election for the party in Cariboo North, because he dared to criticize then-leader Carole James for a lack of policy specifics.

They were belatedly joined by Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen, who quit both the B.C. Liberals and B.C. Conservatives, and then quit that party soon after. Van Dongen does not have the credibility of the others to speak on integrity, given his selfserving party antics.

That aside, there are some good ideas in the independents’ reform package. One is to give backbench MLAs a meaningful role in policymaking.

Simpson gave the example of Prince George MLA Shirley Bond’s term as education minister, where she had to reverse ministry policies that didn’t make sense in rural school districts. The allparty standing committee on education could have prevented this error, he said, but it didn’t because it never meets.

The party voting irregularities described above could be addressed by giving Elections BC authority to supervise party leadership votes, the way it does elections and referenda.

The independents had high hopes for one fundamental reform, moving B.C.’s set election date from the spring to the fall. The idea is for the government to table the annual budget, present the audited public accounts for the previous year, then have an election that rests on tested financial statements and initial results for the current forecast.

Both the B.C. Liberal Party and the NDP have expressed support for this idea. The independents suggest that this brief three-week legislative session is a good time to do it, so the next government can implement it.

Mailbag: Feedback on city tax rates, school closures and potential conflicts of interest Residents hit hard by tax rate increase PETER FINCH Guest shot

Though we as taxpayers must definitely discuss whether city hall has good ideas, or not, on how to spend our taxes, the real question is whether the city is already taxing us enough to fund the right ones.

From 2008 to 2012 Port Alberni tax rates increased by 42 per cent—this during a period of very low cost of living increases, job and wage losses, and economic turmoil.

Now the city proposes to increase by 13.7 per cent, ,ore than five times the cost of living.

This increase will move our total tax rate increase to 61.5 per cent since 2008, (good old compounding interest).

Countries around the world have been driven into bankruptcy and financial ruin by these kinds of spending increases.

Some of the 200812 increase was to cover the transfer of $2,125,000 from the industrial tax base to residential tax base, which is now complete.

However, 42 per cent is way in excess of that.

If you include the 2013 increases to sewer and water, which are taxes, the proposal is really for a 2013 tax increase of 19.5 per cent for the average home.

It is not just our local government that has it wrong.

Municipal governments as a whole are the worst of the worst when it comes to taxation increases and lack of spending control, and they still continue on their over-spending and over-taxation ways.

Only you and I can “force” city hall, the mayor and council to get with the program, stop raising taxes by unjustified amounts, and getting spending under control.

Make your opinion known to the mayor and councillors who, after all, work for us.

QUESTION of the week Students being sacrificed To the Editor, Re: School closure debate.

The sacrificial lambs are the elementary school children, not just at the school closed but also at the schools into which they are fed.

The reason for this sacrifice is not primarily finances. ($100,000 lease cost saved with VAST building closure), it is to find space for VAST students.

The smoke screen has been “financial need”. This is the bill of goods openly peddled. But it’s the VAST factor driving this decision. And for the most part, it has been veiled in the background.

So 200-300 elementary school children would be relocated, bused, split up from classmates, friends, and teachers to accommodate VAST secondary/ adult students, many of whom drop in,

This is the priority that our school administration/ trustees have chosen?

It clearly is not what the community wants.

But the driving reason for an elementary school closure is to find room for VAST. It is not simply about balancing a budget.

Cut should start with city To the Editor, It’s about time that some of the people are starting to wake up and realize what the management of our so-called city hall team is doing to this town. They are taking everything they can and making sure their owns pockets are full, and putting

the taxpayer at risk of not having a home anymore or at all.

Our city hall persons should have had a plan to help out the south end of town, since Zellers is closing.

Unless there is a plan and they haven’t told us about it.

If everyone else has to cut back, so does city hall and councillors too— nobody should get a raise. If the city were to cut back and absorb some of that proposed 13 per cent tax rate increase, maybe the normal taxpayer will be able to exist too.

A lot of us are on pensions, and that’s fixed income.

We have been saying all of the above for years: it’s about time everyone else realizes that management up at city hall should be helping Port Alberni and not taking more from the people. They should be cutting back big time. Wake up, Port Alberni.

City councillors in conflict

To the Editor, Any city councillor who is a business owner and voted for this preposterous 13 per cent increase in private property taxes but froze business property taxes are in a conflict of interest.

Fixed income pensions received less than a two per cent cost of living increase for 2013.

Many forest industry retired workers don’t even get a cost of living allowance.

The cost of food is going up four to five per cent. BC Health care has been increased.

City councillors took care of themselves and now it’s time for taxpayers to boycott places owned by any business owner who represents city council.

Send a strong message that this increase isn’t acceptable.

Note to IOC: don’t take away wrestling from Olympics I

SUSAN QUINN Quinn’s Quips thought I was still asleep and dreaming when I heard the news Tuesday that the International Olympic Committee has recommended dropping wrestling from the official list of Summer Games.

Especially a few days

after Port Alberni hosted around 600 wrestlers for the 30th annual Alberni Wrestling Invitational.

This is the community that rallied around Travis Cross when he aspired to compete in the Olympics; Port Alberni sent the largest fan delegation to the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing just to cheer Cross on.

“It’s mind-blowing,” says Alberni Wrestling tournament director Tom McEvay.

“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing, and I mean from people around the world.”

It was a bittersweet morning for him, coming down so abruptly from such a high following the tournament. Some of the high school athletes who excelled on the mats at the AV Multiplex could potentially be in the 2020 Olympics—including Alberni wrestlers like Nolan Badovinac or the Wagner twins.

McEvay might be reluctant to pit sport against sport, but I’m not. The seven other shortlisted sports for inclusion in the Summer Games are baseball/ softball, karate, roller sports (really? I mean, derby is great but does it belong at the Olympics?), sport climbing (where they will no doubt have to build an artificial facility), squash, wakeboarding and wushu (excuse me, did someone sneeze?).

I have a great respect for all sports, but some of them just aren’t suitable for the Olympics. BMX cycling, for instance.

(I would target archery, however, I happen to own a recurve bow and a couple of provincial medals so I’ll admit my bias in favour of this sport.)

Wrestling is represented on the world scene in 180 countries, and crosses both economic and social boundaries. This might be its saving grace, McEvay

says. “I’m a cup-half-full kind of guy. They say the grieving process is shock, anger, sadness and resolve. I think probably the wrestling community has gone through all these stages very quickly and is at resolve.”

Wrestlers are fighters, he adds. “And there’s a battle now.”

Let’s hope the IOC pays attention.

As a photographer, archival storage and rapid retrieval of photographs are both of prime importance.

When I started shooting in digital format I decided that the best way to store the mountain of images that were rapidly filling my computer hard drive would be to burn them onto CDs or DVDs. The difference between a CD and a DVD is that a CD would give me a burn of 700 Megabytes whereas a DVD would give me 4.7 Gigabytes.

Because retrieval of photos on a CD would be quicker than photos stored on a DVD, I decided to burn most of my photo files onto CDs. I made sure to use only quality archival CDs and DVDs that would at least last long enough to carry me over until the next technology change.

I labeled quite a few of them, making sure to use archival acid-free labels that would not attack the thin aluminum information foil underneath.

Last week I was looking for a photo that I had taken in late 2004 or early 2005 so I waded through a mountain of CDs. (Actually they are neatly arranged by date in a three-drawer storage thingy on wheel casters that have long since fallen off.)

I pulled out a CD that looked like the right date in 2004, put it into the CD tray on the HP, sat back and waited. Nothing…

Nada…Zip….so I removed the CD from the HP, put the same CD into the MacBook Pro slot, waited, gave it a good few minutes and the Mac came up with a dialog box saying “CD has been through WWII therefore cannot retrieve information” or something like that.

I decided to see how bad the damage was, so I started checking every CD in the computer. So far I have weeded out 34 unreadable CDs all

and see if he could recover any files.

Now the question of the day is: “Is there any safe archival way to store digital images?”.

Jim Kermeen, in his first exhibit ever, is the featured artist at the Rollin Art Centre Gallery. Kermeen is showcasing a mix of colourful acrylic paintings in ConglomerART. Book sale needs books The Community Arts Council is accepting gently used books for its annual book sale. Please drop

off any gently used books, puzzles and even CDs in the box located under the stairs at the Rollin Art Centre.

Unfortunately we will not be able to take encyclopedias, text books or library books.

This is one of the Community Arts Council’s biggest fundraisers and the council appreciates the public’s support, both with donations and purchases.

Learn to market your own artwork If you’re an artist who’s thought about selling your art professionally, then L7 Picture Framing has the perfect starter workshop for you.

Officials from the frame shop and gallery are hosting a workshop to teach business and marketing basics to help artists get their art out into the public.

“There are good artists out there who produce great pieces but don’t know how to market them,” says

Rebecca Terepocki.

The workshop will teach artists how to price, target to a specific market, produce a web plan, and develop a portfolio, among other things. Artists will get to take ideas home and put them to paper to make a plan.

“A lot of artists just want to produce their art but this will give them some business and marketing tools that will help them,” Terepocki said.

Officials are also

producing a workbook that artists can take home to use for future reference. There will be charts and formulas to calculate how much to sell a piece for.

“It won’t just be us speaking to them. They’ll have something tangible to use and plan and work with,” she said.

The event will take place at Char’s Landing on Argyle Street on Monday, Feb. 18 from 7-9 p.m. Cost is $20 and includes

Alberni wrestlers dominate home event 30TH INVITATIONAL: | Local athletes earn 29 medals, win numerous team awards and gain respect from visiting wrestling teams.

The 30th Annual Alberni Invitational Wrestling Tournament was another great success both on and off of the wrestling mats.

More than 600 wrestlers from more than five age categories gathered at the Alberni Valley Multiplex last weekend.

The invitational now comprises five different age divisions from the introductory elementary program through the middle school ages, to the high school wrestlers in Cadet and Juvenile to the open aged grappling divisions.

On the mats, the vaunted Alberni Wrestling Program did not disappoint the hometown fans.

EJ Dunn Middle School won both the boys and the girls School Age (12-14 year olds) divisions in convincing fashion with Neill Middle School coming in second in the School Boys division.

ADSS won the Cadet Girls ( 15-16 year olds) with Ucluelet finishing second and Penticton third.

In the Cadet Boys ADSS were fourth behind WJ Mouat, Guildford Park and Abbotsford Traditional.

In the Juvenile Divisions (17-18 year olds) ADSS was third in boys behind WJ Mouat and Carson Graham and fourth in the girls behind Carson, Maple Ridge and Cowichan.

In the overall club standings the Alberni Valley Wrestling Club had 292 points.

Second place Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club at 141 points.

The Campbell River Club were third.

Individually, Alberni wrestlers captured 29 medals, 11 of them gold and finished with 49 top six placings.

Gold medal winners in School Age were Seth Price (36 kilogram Neill), Matt Grimston (61 kg Dunn), Summer Wass (49 kg Dunn) and Morgan Dagenais (53 kg Dunn).

In the Cadet Age group, ADSS wrestlers Dean Leyland (70 kg) , Remi Wells (54 kg), Michel Kurucz (60 kg) and Micaela Dick (69 kg) were all champions in the weight classes.

ADSS wrestlers Jesse Wagner (51 kg), Nolan Badovinac (74 kg) and Jordie Bodnar (43 kg) took first in the Juvenile weights.

In the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers, EJ Dunn’s Morgan Dagenais was named the Most Outstanding School Girl at the Invitational Remi Wells of ADSS meanwhile was named the Most Outstanding Cadet Girl.

“All of our gold medalists had an outstanding tournament but Morgan and Remi certainly stood out,” said coach James Messenger.

With the 30th Invitational now over the local wrestling program turns its attention to final preparations for the Island Secondary School Championships in Ucluelet this weekend. The Islands are a grade 8-12 competition so for most of the Dunn and Neill wrestlers the competitive season is now over.

For those wrestlers in Grades 8-12 who the coaches feel are ready for the next level the Islands are the qualifying event for the BC’s in Duncan Feb. 28 to March 2.

Heading into the Islands ADSS is the defending team champion in both the boys and girls divisions.

Ucluelet Secondary are set to give ADSS a battle in the girls division while Esquimalt will challenge ADSS in the boys. The ADSS boys have won the Island title 29 of the past 35 years. The ADSS girls have won the Island team championship 12 times in the 18 years.

The Alberni Airborne Volleyball club brought a team to an under-13 play day in Victoria at the beginning of the month, and coaches Lindsay Devine and Jay Dyer were impressed with how the girls played.

“The girls did amazing,” Devine said. “Both Jay and I were so impressed, not only with how we the girls played, but with their teamwork, how positive they were (and) the energy

“This being their first ever play day, they really learned a lot—physically and mentally.”

Devine and Dyer also appreciated the parents who drove the 11-member team to Victoria and volunteered as scorekeepers and linespeople.

When the seizures started again, Kayla Aolick thought her independence was over.

Aolick, now 20, still suffers from the effects of a brain tumour she had removed when she was 12.

Her seizures became more frequent over the past year.

“This summer I had a really bad period with them. I had 43 (seizures) in two weeks,” Aolick said. One of her doctors in Vancouver suggested she apply for a guide dog; the Aolicks had never heard of seizure guides dog before this. Kayla applied for and was accepted into the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides program.

trained to get help for Kayla when she has a seizure. “If he sees me shaking he can bark for help and someone wil come, or he can go and get somebody for help,” she explained.

“He can grab the phone if I was able to call 9-1-1.

He can push those LifeLine buttons.”

This is Kayla’s first experience with a dog, and Shadow has to be with her 24/7. When he is in his harness, he is working. Kayla is required to keep up with Shadow’s training, walk him at least twice a day and ensure he maintains a certain weight.

But the rules are a good tradeoff, both Kayla and her mom agree. “It gives me peace of mind,” says Sheila.

“It’s kind of making things a little bit better. He gives me a lot of independence now,” says Kayla.

“They say dogs are a man’s best friend. He’s always beside me; if I’m having a bad day he’s always there to make me feel better.” editor@albernivalleynews.com

From / A1 That experience led Rohdin to start a nonprofit organization called Air Angels, which organizes air transportation for rescue dogs.

“The rescues come in and I have to ensure the people dropping (the dog) off and picking it up are going to be there in time,” she says.

“The need for it is to encourage people right across Canada to take a rescue dog. And it works.”

In order to get the dogs from airport to airport, Rohdin relies on WestJet employees who fly on their days off, and use their staff discounts to arrange for the dogs’ transportation (the rescue societies pay these fees, never the WestJetters, she stressed).

Last year, Rohdin helped transport 171 dogs on 101 flights with nine WestJetters.

In three weeks in January 2013, she helped transport 28 dogs from all over Canada and even the United States to new lives.

There have been a handful of highprofile transfers, too.

Chewy, a Samoyed cross from Barrhead, Alta., headed to Hollywood to work as a stand-in in a Disney production.

There have also been transfers from Bermuda and even Bangkok.

It’s no easy task: Rohdin started with a handful of volunteer WestJet staffers, and

that number has exploded to 60. She receives nearly a dozen requests every day.

Rohdin credits the popularity of the program to Jane Russett, WestJet’s new ambassador with Air Angels.

Russett, a flight attendant, has also flown numerous rescue dogs to their destinations, at first with Hulls Haven Border Collie Rescue and now with Air Angels.

She was introduced to Rohdin a year and

a half ago, and now assists Rohdin in flight bookings.

“She’s quite passionate,” Russett says of Rohdin.

Russett has always had rescue dogs in her family. “On my rescue we’ve got two dogs that we couldn’t let go,” she admitted.

One is from northern Alberta and one is from Kentucky.

Heather Graydon and her family have welcomed a new family member into their home for the next year.

Gabby is a golden Labrador puppy and is a guide dog in training.

The Graydons are training Gabby for her future job as a seeing eye dog.

“We sit in restaurants, we sit at the doctor’s office, we go to the pool,” she said. She also takes Gabby grocery shopping and to her children’s school.

When Gabby has her jacket and harness on, she is working, and Graydon asks people to refrain from petting or distracting her.

“We can stop and talk, but she can’t be distracted...When she is not wearing her jacket she knows she is just a puppy and she plays with our beagle.”

Vigilance, safety protocols and a call to dog owners to watch out for symptoms has kept a fast-spreading animal disease at bay in the Alberni Valley.

The canine parvovirus is a contagious disease affecting dogs and puppies. It causes severe vomiting, diarrhea and immuno-suppression, and it can result in death if the dog is not treated, Port Alberni SPCA Branch Manager Irene Towell said.

In 2012, the Port Alberni SPCA took in more than 600 dogs that were stray, abandoned, unwanted and sick, Towell said.

The SPCA also ships out more than 300 animals per yer to other facilities, she added.

There have been few cases of parvovirus locally in the last five years. The last one in the region was late last year from a dog brought here from the West Coast, Towell said. “We used to see more stray dogs brought in suffering from parvovirus but not anymore.”

The virus is spread through contaminated body fluids, mainly feces, Towell said.

A dog doesn’t have to come into contact with an infected dog to become infected.

An owner can touch an infected dog or track in some infected fecal matter then expose their dog, Towell said.

Symptoms of the disease include listlessness and displaying a depressive mood before the more severe symptoms appear.

Dogs brought into the SPCA facility with parvovirus are quarantined and a veterinarian starts them on a regime of hydration, intravenous drip and antibiotics.

Even with treatment the disease is quick and can be fatal.

“There’s about a 50 per cent success rate,” Towell said.

“That’s a good investment in prevention,” she added.

To serve and protect Police Dog Service teams have to be prepared for emergency callouts at all times of the day and night, and many of these teams have routines in place that ensure not a second is lost in responding to calls for assistance.

But sometimes, those routines are unavoidably interrupted.

Jarrod Trickett’s callout routine in early December was abruptly halted when he and his K9 partner Rook encountered a large black bear sow and her two cubs as Trickett was headed to his police truck outside his home.

Trickett was alarmed as Rook engaged with the three animals, battling them for “what seemed like an eternity,” he related.

After considering a number of intervention options, Trickett decided to simply yell for Rook to get in the truck—remarkably, the dog disengaged, ran to the police truck and hopped in, uninjured.

Rook was able to shake off his bear encounter and track a highprofile criminal over more than a kilometre of rough terrain and corner him in the bush behind Walmart.
