Simpson says ‘fundamental shift in forest policy’ AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter A proposed “fundamental� shift in forest policy has Cariboo North’s MLA raising the issue of transparency. “The minister of forests claims he’s acting on an explicit recommendation of the timber supply committee to convert major licensees’ volumebased tenures to area-based tenures,�

Bob Simpson said. “I can’t find that recommendation anywhere in the committee’s report.�

Simpson pointed to West Fraser, Canfor and Tolko as the top players in the Gold Pan area, currently holding replaceable forest licenses.

The conversion, he said, would mean a switch to area-based – a change, he stressed, that could lead to “the majority of B.C.’s public forests coming under the control of a few major forest companies.�

However, Simpson said, in West Fraser’s case he’s not saying companies should not be rewarded for high standards with more land. The issue, he said, lies with the process. “The problem,� he stated,� is the way government is going about it.�

Simpson said public dialogue and consultation is first and foremost, adding, “government does not have the social licence to support the monopolization and privatization of B.C.’s largest public asset.� “Put it in a platform and put it to the people who own [the resource],� he said. “Do the necessary work and bring legislation in to new government with a new mandate.�

Build your fire to produce minimum smoke

Got firewood? Know how to use it? This article is the last in a three-part series on how to Burn it Smart, brought to you by the Williams Lake and Quesnel Air Quality Roundtables. The first article talked about the importance of well seasoned firewood and the second article discussed new wood stove technology. This article will review how to build a fire that produces minimal smoke. id you know that residential wood burning is a major contributor to poor air quality in Quesnel? Most of us blame industry and automobiles for “bad air.”

The fact is, smoke from residential burning is a major contributor to particulate matter in the air we breathe. Particulate matter (also known as pollution, PM10 or PM2.5) are tiny particles 200 times smaller

than raindrops. Once inhaled, these particles can affect the heart and lungs and cause serious health effects.

The three necessary ingredients for efficient and environmentally friendly wood heating that minimizes particulate matter are: 1) well-seasoned firewood, 2) a certified wood stove that is properly installed, and 3) good fire-burning techniques.

This article will explain the importance of starting and keeping a fire going with minimal smoke.

How to start a fire with little or no smoke: • The kindling should ignite quickly to heat up the chimney and create a strong draft. Fast ignition also heats the brick and steel of the firebox quickly and creates a good environment for even burning of larger wood.

• Kindling pieces need to

be finely split to produce many edges where the fire will first catch.

• Use cedar, pine and spruce for kindling because they ignite more readily than hardwoods.

• In preparing to build a fire, remove excess ash from the firebox. Ash should never be allowed to build up to more than 5 cm (2 in.) in thickness.

• Next, locate where the main supply of combustion air enters the firebox — that’s where you want the fire to first ignite. Open the air control fully.

The two most useful strategies for building fires that don’t collapse and smother themselves are: the “two parallel logs technique” and the “top-down fire technique.”

Two Parallel Logs • Place two split logs parallel to each other in the firebox with a space between.

• Fill the space with crumpled newspaper and fine kindling and place several larger pieces of kindling crosswise on top.

• Light the paper.

• Leave the combustion air inlet open at least until the firebox is full of flames, the surface of the wood is charred black and the edges of the pieces are glowing red.

Top-Down Fire • Place two or three standard-sized pieces of wood in the firebox.

• Add a few pieces of heavy kindling.

• Add some fine kindling.

• Roll up single sheets of newspaper, tie a knot in each and place four or five on top of, or in front of, the kindling.

• Light the paper.

• Leave the combustion air inlet open at least until the firebox is full of flames, the surface of the wood is charred black and

the edges of the pieces are glowing red.

If done properly, the topdown strategy can provide two or more hours of effective heating without having to open the door to add wood or adjust the fire.

For those who own small stoves oriented east-west, you may have some trouble using either of these methods. One way to make lighting fires easier in small, east-west stoves is to cut kindling to 20 cm (8 in.) long.

A kindling fire of small, crisscrossed pieces should light easily if the wood is dry enough.

SkyFest 2013 moving forward DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter

The Quesnel SkyFest Society are one step closer to SkyFest 2013, having formally asked council for the use of the airport.

The letter explained the success of past events and their readiness to host a bigger show this year.

“After hosting a one day show in 2010, a two-day show in 2012 and having worked very hard to procure the attendance of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and CF-18 Jet Demo team, the society feels ready to host a significant show in 2013,” the letter said.

“Each year our society continues to grow with enthusiastic, community-minded people.

“The society is presently comprised of some Quesnel Flying Club members and some new members that are dedicated aviation enthusiasts and community-spirited people.”

The society feels having the event at the local airport demonstrates its ability and showcases the airport on multiple levels.

“One of the goals of the 2010 and

2012 air shows was to raise awareness in the community and the region of the importance our airport plays in the community,” the letter explained.

“This was accomplished by showcasing the Quesnel Regional Airport and demonstrating the possibilities and opportunities that exist because of this community asset.

“We feel this goal was accomplished on more than just a regional level, but also on an international level.”

This recognition was accomplished in the form of different television programs which featured the air show.

“In 2010, Quesnel was featured in two different episodes of The Aviators, which are still airing today on several cable TV channels,” the society said in the letter.

“In addition, the Quesnel community and airport were featured in multiple episodes of the newly created West Coast Escapes television show.”

The air show society contributes much of its success to its successful promotion of the event, not only in Quesnel, but across the Cariboo and

the rest of Western Canada.

“In 2012, thanks to the support of Quesnel Community Futures, we were able to double their $5,000 contribution and realize $10,000 in prime time TV advertising on CFJF Kamloops, CKPG Prince George and Global television,” the letter read.

The Quesnel SkyFest society also advertised in many print ad forms from Prince Rupert to Kelowna and promoted themselves through social media, where they garnered interest from across British Columbia and Alberta.

“With this increased exposure comes a promise of an economically viable airport that can potentially become home to much-needed new business in Quesnel,” the letter read.

The society also hopes to help promote the area as a tourism destination and expanding the tourism industry in Quesnel to include aviation tourism.

“We will continue to work at our goal of creating a destination event by attempting to work with other community groups to give the out-of-town and local airshow

attendees other fun events to attend over the weekend,” the society explained.

In addition to the revenue generated from ticket sales, the society feels the airshow will boost the local economy with fuel sales and food sales.

“The team requires that the show organizers provide housing for the team, but they do buy all of their meals, incidentals and fuels and oils for their jets,” the letter read.

“With 24 Snowbirds team members and nine CF-18 team members, the additional revenue to the area restaurants and the city’s fuels sales will be substantial.”

The letter addressed the need for additional space, specifically a large field north of the airport and that council should consider the projection for a larger attendance than has been previously projected.

“We ask that while considering the 2013

airport promotional and advertising budget that the additional revenue this event will bring to the city of Quesnel and the community will be taken into consideration and that the city will consider a larger participation than has been budgeted in past years,” the letter explained.

Part of this extra draw will be due to extra events centring around the attendance of the Snowbirds for no less than six days. “[The Snowbirds] will be able to attend some prearranged events, make presentations to sponsors and meet with our local cadets and veterans,” the letter said.

Council approved the use of the airport for August 3 and 4.

Decisions regarding budget, and space will come at a later date.

Ritchie, heading the town’s committee for the new building, advises councillors that he had secured tentative costs on three types of buildings: 1. The Kwik-lok prefabricated building at a cost of $5,280 for labour and $7,982 for materials a total of $13,262.

2. A cement block building at a cost of $4,394 for labor and $7,460 for materials, a total of $11,854 3. Democratic Reform Agenda This week Independent MLAs Vicki Huntington, John Van Dongen and I called on the leaders of BC’s major political parties to commit to a reform agenda that would go a long way to making BC politics more democratic and more effective after the May election.

We believe that the upcoming pre-election session is an ideal time to make practical but significant changes to BC’s electoral process and the way the legislature functions.

We’ll introduce legislation this session to move the next fixed election date after May 2013 to the fall, beginning in 2017. We can’t continue to have a political budget every four years that isn’t properly scrutinized or passed into law before people go to the ballot box.

We’re also calling on the government and opposition to support our upcoming bill to ban corporate and union political donations and impose a BC residency requirement for individual donors. These changes would be in place for the next election.

Party leadership contests are also in need of reform, and we’re writing to the Chief Electoral Officer for advice on how Elections BC could provide oversight for leadership races. There were irregularities in memberships and questions about voting practices in both the 2011 Liberal and NDP leadership contests. Party leaders can become premiers, so the public must have confidence that the selection process is beyond reproach.

We’re also demanding the re-instatement of the secret ballot process to elect the Speaker of the House. The current practice allows the governing party to designate the Speaker, which diminishes the office’s direct accountability to all MLAs. We’ll also be introducing a motion to change the nature of legislative committees. Currently BC’s legislative committees rarely meet, if at all, but some simple changes will allow every MLA to have a legitimate and effective role in governing our province.

Finally, we’re calling on the leaders of all political parties to allow their representatives to have the freedom to vote their conscience and in the best interests of their constituents, rather than simply forcing MLAs to vote along party lines. As an Independent, my votes are always free votes, and party MLAs should enjoy similar freedoms.

Together these reforms represent practical and achievable steps to start reforming our legislature and restore our representative democracy. Sharing a table means sharing your day, sharing your undivided attention and sharing conversation. It is a chance to give extra attention to your children and teens. Family meals foster warmth, security and love, as well as a sense of belonging.

The way that you act at the table becomes a model for your children. They learn from your appreciation of the meal and your social skills - especially when outside the home. Table manners are social skills and leading by example makes it easier for parents to teach without lecturing.

Using family meals as a way to sample new menus can be both fun and a great learning experience. By giving family members input and the opportunity to choose the menu, it becomes an ideal way to expand their horizons on a wider range of foods and cultures. It also can lead to healthier choices as well as developing an open mind for experiencing new things.

A way to get more out of a family meal is to engage the family in menu selection, shopping and preparation.

You can begin this at a very young age giving children age-appropriate tasks like stirring ingredients, washing vegetables, tearing lettuce and setting the table. As your children grow they can take on more key responsibilities and the pride that comes with preparing a special family meal. This teaches your children cooking skills, nutrition and appreciation for the effort of meal preparation. It can also provide a great source of accomplishment and sense of self-sufficiency.

Plan to make your Family Day special by including all those who make up your family. Pay tribute by making your meal special and so memorable you’ll want to ensure you do it more often.

Explore together ■ There is no better province to explore than British Columbia and no better family bonding experience than sharing the thrill of a new discovery or experience. Day trips can create remarkable family memories. They offer a wonderful way to spend time together and learn more about where you live.

The variety of experiences available to families is different in each region of this spectacular province - you might decide to explore close to home or venture to one of the other regions in B.C. over the Family Day weekend.

Whether taking SkyTrain, BC Ferries, driving, or hopping a flight, there are many ways to invest in a day of discovery. Travel is just one aspect. To maximize the experience families should involve everyone in the planning.

By planning ahead you and your whole family can experience a worthwhile outing and make every aspect fun. Create a list of activities or venues and assign a rough budget for each. Allow family members to weigh in on their preferences and discuss what they would like to see, do or learn at each.

You might decide to stay in a hotel and be a tourist in your own hometown. Kids or youth can map out the sites and activities, creating a

family agenda including selecting the points of interest, lunch and shopping as well as enjoying the amenities your hotel might offer. It’s the perfect way to free up everyone from everyday tasks and roles.

Researching history, attractions, museums, parks and markets can teach valuable lessons and it helps children to plan within a budget. This way they are part of making important decisions, appreciate both the effort and cost of outings and will be more enthused about an agenda they helped develop.

Be sure to capture your family time by taking photos, saving literature or purchasing a memento. This can lead to great family discussions about what each individual enjoyed or learned and starts you planning for future family explorations.

Experience as a Family ■ Try something new this Family Day. It might be as simple as agreeing that everyone observe a no-technology or TV day.

If you find your gatherings often involve all the adults sitting around visiting while the youngsters play among themselves and the teens segregate away from both you and the little ones, you’re probably not alone.

A family gathering can be a wonderful opportunity for family to hear the latest on jobs, trips, hobbies and health, but if you find your gatherings following the same tedious patterns where one or two family members dominate with the same old stories, this is the year to change it up.

Consider adding new experiences to the plans, and making a new and fun tradition out of them. Here are some ideas to get started: Get out and enjoy our beautiful outdoors – no matter what your weather. If you live in a snowy region of B.C., organize a hayride, snowshoe trek, sledding time or ice skating at a community rink.

If you don’t have snow in your area, you can travel to find it or consider planning a bike ride, a hike or even hitting a minigolf course or a driving range. The idea is to bring everyone together in a family activity you’ve never done before.

Plan a meal away from the house – Instead of cooking for the gathering, plan a formal brunch or dinner at a new

restaurant. Not only do you experience a new menu together but everyone in your group can sit together and enjoy the meal. B.C. has a widely diverse cultural make up and ethnic restaurants are part of that.

Make your Family Day gathering a retreat for all – consider getting your family out of the house and turn your gathering into a festive retreat. Many venues have activities for all ages to enjoy, from winter outdoor fun to refreshing spa services. Think of how much fun it would be for your whole family group to take a yoga class together.

Host a family talent show – Everyone has a special talent in your family, so encourage them to bring their talent to your gathering. If you’re really ambitious set up an area to be used as a stage and arrange chairs for audience members. Many living rooms have dimmer switches so play with lighting and lamps so the performance area is in the spotlight. You might want to rent a popcorn machine or ask family members to bring along some treats and snacks. By bringing new activities to your family gathering this year, you’ll be creating many new memories to share in the future, as well as making the event much more enjoyable.

Play together ■ There is nothing like the fun and innocence of childhood. Whether it’s a game of kick-the-can with the neighbourhood children or building a tree fort in the backyard, some of our best memories are playful.

Board games are a great indoor activity, and Family Day is a great time to dig out some of your old favourites like Monopoly and Clue, and maybe try out a few new ones that are geared towards family fun. Your local toy store will have a wide range of options, along with other family-friendly entertainment such as puzzles and books. Set up a card table, get your

favourite puzzle out and spend hours putting together the pieces. Finishing a complicated puzzle will also give your kids a sense of accomplishment.

If you’re looking for something a bit more high-tech, your game console or computer is a good place to start.

Video games have come a long way from the classic Super Mario and Donkey Kong, and you may discover that your kids have a much larger technical knowledge than you do. They might beat you at Wii Sports but it will make for a great story!

Getting outside for a game of tag or basketball will check off two things on your list: play and exercise. Taking a trip to a local playground or field will give you hours of entertainment for a low cost. Pack a picnic as well for an entire day of fun. Practicing your batting or pitching will also get you ready for the upcoming sports seasons, or maybe compete to see who can run the fastest to the swings.

This year, Family Day is a time to make memories, spend time together and maybe learn a thing or two. Whatever the weather is like outside, you have plenty of options for having fun at all ages.

Gold Pan City featured on website

A new regional investment attraction website, Invest Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast BC, has been launched to promote the exciting investment opportunities in British Columbia’s central interior and coast.

Invest Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast BC is an interactive website that showcases where the best investment opportunities and major projects are located in this stunning region of Canada’s western-most province.

Northern Development Initiative Trust has partnered with communities throughout the central interior and coast to develop an online portal designed to attract new investment to one of the province’s most historic and well-travelled regions.

The portal, uniquely branded around the region’s ties to the forestry sector, is the first of its kind to promote investment opportunities in the Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast. The site features an interactive map that identifies key major projects and investment

opportunities throughout the region, including specific details about each project.

In addition, the website includes comprehensive profiles of regional communities and relevant information to showcase the Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast as a preferred place to invest.

“I applaud the work Northern Development Initiative trust is doing on behalf of our community and region to spur economic development,” mayor Mary Sjostrom said.

“By collaborating on innovative initiatives such as this one, we strengthen our individual economic diversification programs, while broadcasting the area’s investment opportunities to the world.”

Municipal economic development offices throughout the region played a critical role in the development of Invest Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast BC, developing content for community profiles and working with business and industry partners to develop profiles of key investments.

“The Invest Cariboo

Chilcotin Coast web portal offers great opportunities for investment and economic development within the central B.C. region,” Cariboo Regional District Chair Al Richmond said.

“This site will also provide so much needed awareness to our region and its importance as an economic driver for the province of British Columbia’s economy.”

Invest Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast BC is the fourth and final investment portal of its kind developed to showcase the incredible amount of economic activity underway across central and northern British Columbia.

“Partnered initiatives like this project benefit local economies and foster greater regional collaboration,” Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook said.

“A regionally based web portal is an effective marketing approach to connect potential investors with Cariboo Chilcotin Coast opportunities and educate those circles

Create together ■ One of my favourite memories was creating an enormous piñata in preparation for a multi-family holiday.

We blew up a huge bouncy ball and covered it with papier mache. Our children and those of our friends were young so after my young sons painted the ball white, I drew a score of cartoon characters, shapes and funny animals all around it.

Filled with age-appropriate, small toys, puzzles and treats, the big white ball became a major activity for everyone in our three-family group. Every age took turns colouring in the shapes through-out the day, knowing when it was completed the ball would be strung up. The anticipation and excitement was heightened because the reward came with activity and was not immediate.

Creating something as a family can mark an important time in your family history. It captures the age and ability of your children, your interests and a point in time.

By working together on a project your family can develop new skills, collaborate on something truly memorable and enjoy what each family member brings to the endeavor.

Think about all the things a family could create together – a family album complete with stories, mementos and funny or poignant memories. Your family might be old enough to handle something more ambitious like preparing a garden, building a dog house or designing and painting a family recreation area in your home.

Technology puts an amazing array of tools in the hands of today’s families. You can plan, write, film and edit a movie with your everyday computer and smartphone technology and software. Even more fun is sharing your family creation with friends around the world.

You might even suggest a film festival by inviting families to create their own film and have a “popcorn premiere” to show them all.

Searching online will uncover an astounding number of crafts and projects you could tackle as a family. It can be as simple as building and flying a kite.

Or you may look for something you can recycle or re-purpose into a creative new item – whether a work of art or function. It’s bound to make your family members proud environment stewards as well as treasuring your time and project as a family.

Share together ■ Bringing together your extended family can create a highly memorable and valuable life event. They say “it takes a village to raise a child” and many would agree especially in today’s world of working parents and latch-key kids. The support, experience and interest of your extended family can have a significant impact on your immediate family. Regardless of your definition of ‘extended’ family, bringing together those with whom you share history with can have lasting benefits not just for you and your children but for those you invite to share your day.

It is common in today’s world to have older children in nuclear families reach their teens before meeting extended family members. Geographical isolation is common for middle-class families who move based on occupational opportunities while family branches retain their independence.

Family Day is the ideal occasion to hold family reunions to re-establish and integrate a stronger family connection. This allows your children to connect with extended family members and to share a better sense of their heritage and belonging.

Don’t forget to include senior members of your family. Family reunions and relationships inspire seniors to stay active and pursue their well-being. Studies have found seniors feel revitalized when they spend time with families. Your children will benefit from hearing their oral history and that’s an inspiring experience that won’t always be available to them.

Another way to celebrate Family Day is to gather your extended family and friends around something you care about. It might be a shore clean-up, a family walk or a garage sale. You might volunteer at a foodbank. Food is often central to gatherings and with everyone contributing to a family meal afterwards, it becomes a great way to share B.C.’s first Family Day.

Spend some quality time

he dog days of late winter - who hasn’t longed for the relief of a nice long weekend right around the time we’re finally going to have one to take advantage of?

Family Day... what could be a better theme for an overdue stat?

If the love and value of family isn’t idealized... what can be?

It’s like the whole festive season is making a one-day curtain call... setting the stage for us all to bite down hard as we set our sights on Good Friday on the 29th of March, while paying the appropriate respects to Valentines Day, of course.

There are people living in far more senior locations than us (Germany’s a good example) who benefit from a relatively benevolent vacation structure, and their economies seem to be doing just fine as a result.

It’s not just slackers who thrive with a day off work from time to time, just think of the added employment opportunities generated just by the need to cater to all those folks taking a day off work?

Then there are those of us who can go to work and feel like its a holiday just because the phone isn’t ringing quite as much.

Whether your family is big or small, near or far... here’s hoping our February stat holiday finds you making the most of it, in whatever way suits you best.

I was born to be blonde

W

hen people ask me what my real hair colour is, I usually tell them it’s grey.

The truth is, I was blonde when I was young, but as I got older, my hair darkened.

By the time I was in high school, it was considered “dirty blonde” – no matter how often I washed it.

I hated my hair back then. It didn’t fit into any categories. It wasn’t curly or straight, and it wasn’t blonde, brunette or red. To me it was nondescript and in-between.

Regrettably, I had no appreciation for my thick, natural waves, its fabulous long length, or the fact that it required no styling products to look great. All I could see was boring and bland, so I decided to do something about it.

Against my mother’s wise advice not to spoil my virgin wash-and-go locks, as soon as I graduated from high school I bought myself a box of Sun-In so I could get beautiful, sun-kissed highlights like the models in seventeen magazine.

Unfortunately my hair didn’t end up looking anything like theirs. It turned a weird yellowish orange, and believe me,

On A Brighter Note back in the ’80s this was not a cool hue to have.

My mother was not pleased.

Despite her disapproval, I experimented a lot with my hair over the next decade.

Dark brown, light brown, auburn and several shades of blonde were all tried out on my slow learning noggin at some point.

My self imposed struggle also included a few bad perms and too many horrid haircuts for any insecure young woman to enjoy.

By the time I reached my 30th birthday I realized how good I’d had it in my youth and wanted to revert back to my natural unprocessed state so I wouldn’t have to spend valuable time taming the fried-out, frizzy, cavegirl hair I now had.

But by then I had too much grey and I was unwilling to embrace my

“Just needed a change,” I explained, shrugging.

I knew he was right, I wouldn’t be able to stay a redhead for long.

Not just because red fades fast and is hard to maintain, but because, as much as I love red hair, I don’t really feel like me when it’s attached to my head.

Luckily, now that it’s washed out to more of a strawberry blonde, the red is so subtle it’s barely noticeable.

“Nice orange hair!” my daughter’s nine-year-old friend just exclaimed as she climbed into the back seat of my VW Beetle. “You’re the exact same colour as your car now. ” Awesome. I look like my car and a clown at the same time. Precisely the sweet, subtle style I was hoping for.

I found a dark blonde colour, slightly lighter than my natural “dirty blonde,” that suited me best and was easy to maintain.

No more colour experiments for me.

Sixteen years later, I changed my mind.

“Do you think I should dye my hair red?” I asked my husband a couple of weeks ago.

“No,” he said. “You’re a blonde, not a redhead.”

Three days after that, as he was on his way home from a work trip, I sent him a text with a picture of my bright red hair.

My text said: Don’t freak out. His reply simply said: I am.

Entering the house he looked at my face, then my head, and then he started to laugh.

“What’s so funny?” I asked, imagining a picture of me as Ronald McDonald in his head.

“You asked my advice, but you didn’t take it,” he said.

“Again.”

“The cashier at Walmart thought it was a great idea,” I replied.

“Well, that’s nice,” he said, scratching his big, shiny bald spot.

It’s time to start your fundraising

W

ith only sixteen weeks until the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life, it is time to get moving on your fundraising activities.

Relay For Life is the revenue-generating event for the Canadian Cancer Society and the funds raised are used for the many services and initiatives supported by the Canadian Cancer Society.

Many teams and individuals are already fully involved in their fundraising efforts for the 2013 Relay For Life. As of Feb. 4, Quesnel Relay For Life participants have raised $5,510.

the top fundraiser and his team, the West Fraser Walkin’ Wonders, have already exceeded their fundraising goal of $1,000.

The team with the top fundraising so far is Family Fun. This team of 15 has already raised $3,295 towards their goal of $15,000.

With 46 participants currently registered on 10 teams, there is still a long way to go before we meet or beat last year’s 346 participants on 34 teams.

Remember. until March 1, the cost of registration is only $10, after which the cost increases to $20. So register early.

are currently accepting new members from the public and more are sure to come as teams continue to register.

Society would like to invite all those who have or are fighting cancer to join us for the victory lap that begins Relay For Life on May 25.

There will also be a survivor tea held in April and at Relay For Life to celebrate survivors’ strength and courage and to help connect survivors with services and other survivors who may understand what they are going through.

Lawyers call for list of reforms

The B.C. branch of the Canadian Bar Association released a report Tuesday calling for more judges, more court services staff, more legal aid money and more mental health services.

Kerry Simmons, president of the Canadian Bar Association B.C. branch, released the report at a news conference in Victoria Tuesday.

Simmons said the association wants to put justice issues on the agenda for the May provincial election and it has been received with interest by the B.C.

Liberal Party and NDP. The bar association, representing 6,900 B.C. judges, lawyers and law students, is seeking a long wish list of reforms, including longstanding demands for legal aid funding for family court disputes and a return to the 2005 level of staffing for provincial court judges.

The B.C. government announced the hiring of nine new judges a year ago and Attorney General Shirley Bond also launched a review of the court system.

Brendan Kennedy 1947 ~ 2012

A long-time resident of Nazko and Quesnel, Brendan Kennedy passed away peacefully on the morning of 31 December 2012 in Prince George.

Brendan was born in Woolton Village, Liverpool, England in 1947 and moved with his family to Toronto in 1955. He came west in the 1960s with a determination to be of assistance to remote native communities. Eventually he settled on the Nazko Indian Reserve where he served as a community development worker in Nazko and Kluskus for the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs and subsequently as manager for the Nazko Band. After moving to Quesnel in the 1980s he became administrator of the Quesnel Community Law Centre and was elected to Quesnel City Council.

Throughout his career he was widely acknowledged

as a tireless advocate for the least advantaged members of the community. He particularly championed the cause of social justice for First Nations and did pioneering work on the issue of native land claims at a time when governments of all stripes denied the legitimacy of such claims. Mostly he was known as someone to call upon if you needed help.

Brendan is survived by his dear wife Edith and his brothers Vincent, Desmond and Gerard and family.

Friends and colleagues will be welcome to join in celebration of his life in early summer.

W

hether large or small, every community benefits from a healthy arts and cultural component. Quesnel formalized its arts and culture groups under the umbrella organization, Arts Council in 1973 through the efforts of Brenda Smith, Branwen Patenaude and other interested community members.

This year, the Arts Council celebrates 40 years of service to the community with a celebration at the Arts Centre at the Recreation Centre on North Star Road, Feb. 16, 1 – 4 p.m. in the West Fraser Timber Room.

One of the founding members was the Arts Society, which had been in existence since 1946. Close to 10 community groups joined the Arts Council at its inception.

“The Arts Council formation also allowed access to government funding for various projects and events,” Arts Council member Bernice Heinzelman said.

One of the biggest projects involving the Arts Council began with a referendum in 1988 regarding an Arts Centre addition to the Recreation Centre, a second ice surface at the arena and the Alex Fraser Park agri-plex.

“The Arts Council members went door-to-door seeking signatures and support,” Heinzelman said.

The Arts Centre was completed in 1990 and the Arts Council realized the organization couldn’t run all the programs.

“The Sub-Regional Recreation Committee (composed of City of Quesnel and CRD members), headed

by Mary Glassford, designed a position, with considerable input from the Arts Council, for an arts co-ordinator,” Heinzelman added.

Maggie Ferguson-Dumais was the first to hold that position in 1991, where she remained until her retirement in 2011. Responsibilities for programming included dance, pottery, painting, youth programs and various events, projects and other arts and culture interests.

“This freed up the Arts Council to pursue other endeavours,” Heinzelman said.

Professional potter Pat Wahlstrom, who joined the Arts Council in 1983, said the council devised such creative projects as the Art Walk which showcased local art in community businesses; the Holly and Ivy, a show and sale of fine arts and crafts; Art in the Park, where the public could see working artists; and many cultural events.

The Arts Council has played an integral part in the coordination and stimulation of artistic endeavours within the community.

With its established network of local arts organizations, the Arts Council has

The goals of the Arts Council has always been to increase and broaden the opportunities for local citizens to enjoy and participate in cultural activities; to coordinate activities and information among community groups; to establish and maintain networks among community, provincial and federal arts organizations; to stimulate and encourage the development of cultural projects and activities; to bring to the attention of civic, provincial and federal authorities the cultural needs of this area; and the acquisition and disbursement of monies for cultural development in this area.

Although the faces around the Arts Council table have changed over the years, the goals have remained the same. Organizations have come and Observer file photos gone. Today there are approximately 10 groups under the Arts Council umbrella.

In recent years, the Arts Council has pursued grants for such events as the B.C. Parks celebration in 2010 at Ten Mile Lake, where the organization partnered with the Friendship Centre.

“The Arts Council’s mission was to have arts and culture elements in all community events,” Heinzelman said.

In 2012 the Arts Council launched Hullabaloo, a two-day children’s art and music festival.

As a legacy to the community, the Arts Council, in partnership with Quesnel Leisure Services, maintains and adds to the Quesnel Artrium, a collection of original art donated by visiting art instructors and local artists. Currently there are 57 pieces hanging in the Arts Centre.

The Arts Council also honours its own. Since 2000, the Gallery of Honour has recognized those who have made significant contributions to the arts.

There are three categories, adult, youth and posthumous. Selections for the Gallery of Honour are made every two years however, the public is invited to submit nominations at the Arts and Rec Centre at any time.

The celebration on Feb. 16 includes music, signing and piano performances by some very talented members of the community. Member groups will have displays and some demonstrations making this an ideal time to discuss how you can get involved. Snacks and drinks will be provided along with a very special birthday cake.

The church needs forgiveness I

always believe in purpose. I guess it’s the same as fate but the source is always God. If you are reading this today, I suspect God has brought you here. I don’t know why. I don’t particularly believe I have anything inspirational to say. But I do have something.

I once heard an inlaw say something that has caused endless frustration for me as a Christian.

“You Christians think you are better than everyone else.”

I have often wondered why people get that impression? The very fact I am a Christian is because I don’t think I am better, in fact I consider myself a failure and I desperately Pastor Ken Cyr Maple Park Alliance Church need a Saviour. But as I consider the large number of people who have left the church I am prompted to reach out, as best I can, to them. Maybe “them” is you. There have been many people that have been hurt by the church. Maybe it was a pastor, or a Sunday School teacher, or an elder, or me. Maybe it was a criminal act done against you or just an uncaring word or attitude. You see the problem with the church is that it is made up of people. People will always fail us. They may not mean to do it, but they do. Even when we try to do good, our humanness taints the good. Not an excuse but a reality. I am just one minister, from one church who wants, on behalf of all those times you felt you have been hurt by the church, to say “I am sorry” and I ask you to forgive me and forgive the church for not being what you hoped I, or it, would be.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter A pan-B.C. team, including local Alison Duddy as the lead, won the provincials for wheelchair curling.

Duddy was in Surrey with her team for the last weekend of January to take on two other teams for the right to represent B.C. in the nationals.

The team consisted of skip Gary Cormack from Surrey, third Frank LaBounty from Prince George, second Vince Miele from Richmond and of course Duddy.

Joining the Cormack rink in Surrey was the Austegarden rink, hailing from Kelowna and around the Okanagan and the Green Rink, who hail from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

The Cormack rink started the round robin against the Austegarden rink, where the Cormack rink started what would be their calling card for the tournament, taking five points in the fifth end. The Cormack rink was down early on, coming back to take the lead by getting five points in the fifth. They would struggle through the next couple ends, leading to a tie going into the final end. The Cormack rink pushed through for a solid seventh end, taking three points, to take the round 10-7.

Next up, the Cormack rink faced off against the Green rink. Duddy's team struggled to find their rhythm in the first few ends, with the Green rink slowly gaining a lead of 5-2 after the first three ends. They would turn the table starting in the fourth, with the added push of five in the fifth end, to double the Green Rink's score at full time, 12-6.

With two wins in the round robin, the Cormack rink was given a by into the finals, while the Green Rink and the Austegarden rink battled it out for a berth. Green would lead his team to victory in that game, for a rematch with Cormack.

The finals started with a bit of worry, as Duddy, in the pre-game practice, had a bit of an accident.

"There was actually a delay of game, because when we went out to practice, I pulled a really good one and went over backwards in my chair and bounced my head off the ice pretty hard," Duddy said.

"So, we had to wait for the paramedics to come and check me out. My biggest concern was there has to be a female on the ice and I was the only female on my team. So, I was concerned that if I wasn't able to play, my team would have to forfeit the game."

Despite a jostled brain and a bit of

whiplash that still bothers her, Duddy was able to continue.

The Cormack rink started slow once again, going down 5-2 by the fourth, but came back with their trademark five in the fifth to take the lead, which they didn't relinquish for the rest of the game, leading them to a 9-8 win.

The rink will now be headed east to Ottawa to represent B.C. in the nationals in Ottawa, March 24-31.

Though a small tournament, Duddy said she was happy with the turnout; it being a somewhat niche sport.

Duddy is thankful to the volunteers made the tournament possible. The volunteers take and even more active role in the tournament, helping competitors do small thing like clean their rocks, which can at times make them feel almost like part of the team.

This will be Duddy’s fourth trip to nationals and she hopes it will be her most successful.

“If we play like we did at provincials, where we all stepped up and played fantastic, not just individually but as a team, I think we can be contenders,” she said.

Though she is impressed with her team this year, she said she has noticed the other teams maturing and progressing during her years attending the

tournament.

“A lot of the other provincials teams have been together longer and have gotten to know each other better and know each other’s games, so the level of play has, in the last three years, increased phenomenally,” she said.

The sport is a particularly difficult one, more difficult than able-bodied curling, Duddy thinks. The difficulty comes in delivering the rock, as the teams are without sweepers, so the shots have to be perfect without help from anyone down the line.

They often get comments at the shot making from curlers who can’t believe it.

A coach was provided to the team after winning the provincials. Duddy has yet to work with her this year, as the team hasn’t been able to beat the distance that separates them to make a practice.

She will be there later this month at the practice they’ve organized in Surrey to provide pointers. She will also help them coordinate their trip to Ottawa allowing the team to focus on the game.

Now, though, she is focused on fundraising to help allay some of the cost of getting to Ottawa.

She has some plans for the fundraising, as well as some businesses she had been funded by before.

To be eligible to attend, a student MUST turn five years of age between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.

There are NO exceptions. To register, you will need to bring your child’s Birth Certificate, BC Care Card, and proof of residential address (i.e. Hydro bill) at the time of registration.

Children will not be registered for school without showing legal proof of age and residence in BC. Kindergarten Registration Forms, Kindergarten School of Choice Request Forms and additional information/forms are available online starting February 8, 2013 but may not be submitted to your neighbourhood school until February 12th. All neighbourhood schools will also have forms/ information needed when you go to register.

With the exception of French Immersion at Ecole Baker, ALL students must first register at their neighbourhood school. School of Choice forms will be available at that time should a parent/guardian wish their child to attend a different school. (Please note: Non-catchment students will be placed in their school of choice based on criteria laid out in Policy 310.4 – Student Registration, Enrolment & Placement. Bussing may not be available to non-catchment schools.

Delicious Mexican party potato salad C

anned cream-style corn gives this potato salad a delectable creaminess, without the usual mayo.

Perfect for potlucks.

Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes 3 lb (1.5 kg) Yukon Gold potatoes, scrubbed and cut in ¾ (2 cm) cubes 1 can (540 mL) PC Blue Menu Black Beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup (250 mL) diced red onion 1 ½ ci[s (375 mL) diced sweet red pepper ¾ cup (175 mL) finely chopped green onion ¾ cup (175 mL) chopped fresh coriander 1 can (398 mL) PC Blue Menu Cream-Style Corn Quarter jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (optional)

3 tbsp (45 mL) fresh lime juice ½ tsp (2 mL) salt Bring large saucepan of water to a boil over medium-high heat.

Add potatoes; once water returns to boil, reduce heat to medium.

Cover and cook for about 10 minutes or until tender. Drain; transfer to baking sheet to cool completely.

Meanwhile, in extra large bowl combine black beans, red onion, red pepper, green onion, coriander, corn, jalapeno (if using), lime juice and salt.

Add cooled potatoes; toss to combine.

Makes 10 servings.

This salad can be made and refrigerated one day ahead. For added flavour, top with your choice of shredded cheese.

anadians and Americans love their gas barbecues, but some feel that grilling over gas loses some of flavour associated with charcoal and smoke. Well worry no more. There are numerous grilling planks and wood chips available (GrillPro for example has a full line of flavours), combined with the cooking power of a Broil King barbecue, backyard chefs can taste the smoky flavour of wood and cook with the convenience of gas. Tender, smoky ribs, roasts and seafood can be achieved with ease. Smoking with wood chips When you smoke a cut of meat, give it plenty of time and smoke so it can absorb the flavour. Start by soaking the wood chips in water for at least half an hour and then drain them. Use a stainless steel or cast iron smoker box placed under the cooking grids so the chips will smolder and smoke. There are several different types of GrillPro wood chips available.

Hickory is used most traditionally in the southern barbecue belt, and gives a strong hearty flavour to meats. Try hickory with beef or pork. Mesquite is a great choice for beef, lamb, or even turkey. Fruit Wood (such as apple or cherry) is great for lamb, poultry and fish. Whatever type of wood chips you choose you’re sure to get unparalleled taste.

Planking is a great way to impress your guests Cooking meat or seafood on a wooden plank is sure to get great results and wow your dinner guests! The process is just as simple as smoking.

Just soak the plank in water, juice, or beer for an hour and pat it dry. Place the seasoned meat on the plank and then onto a medium-low temperature grill. Cook it to its desired doneness, and serve. It’s that simple. GrillPro offers cedar, maple and alder grilling planks. Cedar is ideal for salmon but don’t be afraid to try other meats on it. Pork goes great on a maple plank and lamb is ideal for alder.
