Volunteer makeup artists, hairdressers, estheticians and manicurists provide their services four nights a week at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. The Beauty Night program is set to come to Burnaby and New Westminster for one night a month, and is seeking help to make it happen.

A new hairstyle or a relaxing foot massage might seem the furthest thing from the mind of a woman worrying about where her next meal might come from, or how to escape an abusive relationship. But they can be the first steps to restoring hope, says Catherine MacGillivray, the founder and executive director of the Beauty

Night Society. “And when they have hope, then they start to believe change is possible.” For 12 years, MacGillivray and her pool of hundreds of volunteers have been providing makeovers, hairdressing, manicures, pedicures, relaxing massages and an empathetic ear to women who are homeless, addicted, abused or just elderly and alone for four nights a week at Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. Now she’s hoping to recruit volunteers to help provide similar services once a month in Burnaby

and New Westminster. MacGillivray was serving meals at a drop-in centre when she first saw the transformative powers of a bottle of nail polish, or a hair brush. A distressed woman came in, but she didn’t want food. She just wanted to feel clean. MacGillivray says she was able to direct her to a shower at the centre, and then to a cache of donated items. The woman picked out a curling iron, but her arms were so weakened she couldn’t lift them to use it. MacGillivray, an actress by 4x1.25_book_drive_ad_final.pdf profession, helped curl her hair.

“She gave me a huge hug,” says MacGillivray. “When she walked out of the centre she had an extra bounce in her step.” After that, every time the woman visited the centre, she asked MacGillivray to do her hair. So did others. A light bulb went off. MacGillivray used her connections in the theatre and film industry, as well as email, to get the word out for volunteer makeup artists, hairdressers, manicurists. Her first beauty night attracted 73 women. 1 12-03-05 1:20 PM Please see BEAUTY, A3

The proposed redevelopment of the Burnaby Value Village site at the corner of Kingsway and Edmonds Street could yield a new childcare centre for the community. Cressey Developments purchased the threeacre property last May. In July it started the rezoning application process with a preliminary proposal for a mixed-use multifamily residential and commercial project with three high-rise apartment towers and a shorter office building on a twostorey retail podium, according to a city staff report. The developer wishes to use the city’s density bonus provisions which city hall estimates would yield about $14 million as a community benefit if the rezoning goes ahead. After assessing the community’s needs, city staff are recommending that roughly $5 million of that be used to build, furnish and equip a licensed group childcare centre on the site, the report said. see NEW CHILD, A3

Optimism around Heights shuttle compromise Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

TransLink is considering alternatives to its controversial proposal to reduce community shuttle services in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. In the last couple weeks, TransLink officials have met with representatives of the Heights Merchants Association (HMA) and Seton Villa seniors residence about potential options. Isabel Kolic, HMA executive director, said TransLink officials presented two alternatives. The first, which Kolic said the association didn’t favour, involved retaining the every-30-minutes frequency in peak periods and ending the loop at the Safeway

MacGillivray says the simple act of extending her feet for a pedicure or allowing her hair to be cut can help a woman going through abuse or a difficult time rebuild her trust in others. “It makes people feel good, feel safe,” says MacGillivray. “That makes people feel validated.” Each of the volunteers brings their professional experience, but they’re also trained to recognize the warning signs of abuse, addiction and even health issues like diabetes and depression. creative writing, drama, arts and crafts, and baking. After all, says MacGillivray, the beauty nights are about fun. “Makeovers make people feel good,” says MacGillivray. “We listen to them and as we get to know them, we learn about them. They just want to be heard.” • MacGillivray is looking for Beauty Night volunteers in Burnaby and New West, as well as space near SkyTrain to be able to train them. She’s also available to speak to community groups interested in getting involved. To learn more about Beauty Night or to fill out a volunteer application, go to www. beautynight.org.

to use the bus they’ll simply drive. The recent meeting with TransLink was a positive development, she said. “It shows us that they’re earnest at registering and taking into account what our community has told them and we really appreciate that.” Fran McDougall, executive director of Seton Villa, was also hopeful a workable alternative would be found. “We just appreciated that our requests have been heard, they’ve been acknowledged and they’ve taken the time to say maybe we can come up with a compromise.” TransLink spokesperson Patricia MacNeil said staff are expected to make their recommendations sometime in late winter or early spring.

The centre would be about 7,000 square feet in size and located on the fourth or fifth level of the development’s office building with an adjacent protected outdoor play area of about 5,275 square feet on top of the commercial podium. The centre would serve about 70 children, ranging in age from infants to five years old. Burnaby city hall would own the facility, which would be leased to a non-profit childcare provider which would be responsible for its operating costs. There is currently a “significant need” for childcare in both the immediate neighbourhood around the site and the southeast quadrant of Burnaby, the report said. The two existing cityowned childcare centres, Hanna Court and Taylor Park, are both full and have extensive waitlists. The proposed centre would also help address the

vulnerability, from a child development perspective, of kindergarten children in the Stride, Middlegate and Edmonds areas. Staff recommend the remaining $9 million be taken as a cash-inlieu contribution to the city. Under Burnaby city policy, 80 per cent ($7.2 million) would be deposited in the Edmonds Town Centre community benefit fund for use on future offsite amenities and 20 per cent ($1.8 million) would go into the city-wide housing fund designated for affordable or special needs housing initiatives. Prior to the Cressey contribution, the Edmonds fund was at $3.47 million while the housing fund has a current balance of $7.2 million. On Monday, council referred the proposal back to the Community Development Committee for further discussion.

Edmonds town hall on Tuesday An Edmonds town hall meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Edmonds Community School. Along with updates from Burnaby city staff of developments in the area, the event will include community information displays and activities to determine what the community wants to see in the neighbourhood and the Edmonds Business and Community Association. Refreshments and childminding will be provided. Childminding must be booked in advance by contacting Luci at 604-2574456 or luci.baja@sd41.bc.ca. got hobbies? We’ve got space for you.

Art may just be a hobby for Wendy Hu, but the Grade 12 Moscrop secondary student showed recently she’s got the right stuff. Hu, 17, was the winner in the 13-17 age category, and one of only three nationwide, of a design-your-own-coin contest sponsored by the Royal Canadian Mint. Her father told her about the contest, knowing she has an interest in art. “Ever since I was young, really, just finding ways to doodle on little scraps of paper or on the walls or in my notebook,” she says. “I’ve never taken art lessons. Just taken art in school, just a side hobby of mine.” The design won’t be appearing on a Canadian coin any time soon, but Hu’s prize includes a visit to her class from one of the Royal Canadian Mint’s engravers to talk about their craft, a large model of the coin design, a silver $10 coin, a Canadian coin set and a coin collector toolkit. The contest was part of the 2012 Culture Days celebrations and entrants were asked to design a coin along the theme of “community and culture.” Hu’s winning design shows four arms from people of different cultures reaching out to form a peace sign. “There’s a little plant coming out of the earth and

When she learned she’d won, “I was ecstatic and I was just really happy that someone appreciated the work I put into it. I actually had a lot of fun designing the coin so regardless of the outcome I was very happy.” The focus of the contest was to get kids interested in the mint, coin collecting and what goes into coin design, said Alex

Dix open-minded on future of Burnaby Hospital Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

BC NDP leader Adrian Dix is open to suggestions on what should be done with Burnaby Hospital should his party form the government after the May provincial election. The Opposition leader answered reporters’ questions while he was in Burnaby last week as part of a tour of high tech companies in the Lower Mainland. When asked his position on a Burnaby city hall proposal to build a new Burnaby Hospital on the site of the former Willingdon youth detention centre site at Willingdon and Canada Way, Dix said, “I think we have to look at it, I think we have to be open-minded about these things.” However, he stressed that there are “significant health capital challenges” in the region, not the least of which is Royal Columbian and Burnaby hospitals. “It’s been abundantly clear over time the government has neglected both those hospitals. Really, Royal Columbian ought

to have already been started a decade ago. Instead all they did was close St. Mary’s Hospital and little else.” Dix said Fraser Health has the lowest level of acute care beds per population of any health authority in Canada and its health care workers are forced to do more with less. The problem started when the population in Fraser Health grew between 2001 and 2005, unlike in the other health regions, while at the same time the government cut acute care beds. “We’re playing catch-up in a very serious way now,” he said. If if forms the next government, the New Democrats “absolutely” would be willing to look at what city hall is suggesting. “We’re open-minded about it but there’s a big health care deficit caused by 10 years of Liberal neglect and we have to try and address these problems one step at a time ... What the best solution is for the taxpayer and for patients, still has to be worked out.”

Auto thefts up, but long-term trend positive There was good news and bad news about auto crime in Burnaby last year. Burnaby was among a few B.C. communities that saw an increase in auto crime, possibly due to the work of a few active thieves in the city, said ICBC. There were 13 per cent fewer vehicle theft incidents but 21 per cent more break-ins in 2012 compared to 2011. The positive track record is significantly better when the 2012 numbers are compared to those in 2003, when the provincial bait car program was launched. In that case, there were 84 per cent fewer vehicle thefts and 52 per cent fewer break-ins in 2012 compared to 2003. Provincewide, auto theft has decreased by 73 per cent since 2003, with a seven per cent drop in 2012 compared to 2011.

PuBLISHED & PRINTED BY BLACK PRESS LTD. at 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Doyle’s departure The B.C. Auditor-General, John Doyle, will not accept an extension to his term, as offered by a legislative committee which initially said it did not want to renew his contract. He has instead accepted an appointment as auditor-general of the Australian state of Victoria. Doyle rubbed the Liberal government the wrong way on many occasions. One such Liberal was MLA Eric Foster, whose expenses in regards to renovations of his constituency office in Vernon were not properly accounted for. The building was owned by his constituency assistant’s husband, and even though Foster was being audited, he chaired the committee which recommended Doyle not be re-appointed. Doyle also dismayed the government by looking into the $6 million in legal expenses paid by the government after Dave Basi and Bob Virk agreed to plead guilty in the B.C. Rail corruption case. Not only was this reimbursement against government policy, it came about in mid-trial, just as former finance minister Gary Collins was set to testify. While B.C. Supreme Court has ruled that Doyle cannot have access to the detailed expenses billed by Basi and Virk’s lawyers, this information will come out eventually — perhaps through a public inquiry, which other political parties have pledged to call, should the Liberals be defeated in the May election. Doyle said Tuesday that he was prepared to stay in B.C. for a full second term of six years. However, the committee only offered him two more years and he wasn’t prepared to take that, given how political the entire issue had become. An auditor-general is expected to ask thorough questions and act as an advocate for taxpayers. Doyle has done that very well, and he will be sorely missed. —Black Press

NDP’s fortunes take hit in riding re-draw The term “gerrymander” was coined in 1812 by the Boston Gazette to describe the manipulation of electoral riding boundaries to benefit one party over another. It was a response to thengovernor Elbridge Gerry’s re-draw of the state senate election map to benefit his party, a map so bizarre one riding was said to resemble a salamander. Get it? Gerry-mander. Fears of map manipulation have been around as long as there have been ridings to win or lose. And federal politicians are apt to cry the “G” word every 10 years when the Electoral Boundaries Commission re-draws the maps, which this year includes creating 30 new ridings, six of them in B.C. If the proposals are approved, the lines in Burnaby and New Westminster will change significantly. In Burnaby, a new riding will be created (Burnaby South), and the current Burnaby-Douglas riding will be trimmed in Burnaby and a chunk of North Van will be stapled onto it to

Chris Bryan editor@burnabynewsleader.com

create Burnaby North-Seymour. With the re-draw, New Westminster will be consolidated into one riding. Today it’s split in two, sharing one riding with Coquitlam and the other with Burnaby. The changes will create a single riding that includes all New West and a slice of east Burnaby. So who will benefit, and who will lose from these moves? The NDP’s Kennedy Stewart won Burnaby-Douglas by just two per cent of the vote in 2011. He says if everyone voted the same again in the newly imagined Burnaby North-Seymour, he’d lose by seven per cent to the Conservative candidate. North Van tends to be much bluer than Tommy Douglas’s old stomping ground. Score: Tories, 1; NDP -1. In New West, the new riding

7438 Fraser Park Dr., Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9 newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com burnabynewsleader.com | newwestnewsleader.com

would easily go to the NDP. But the future of NDP MP Fin Donnelly (currently New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody) will be more uncertain should he run in the new riding that drops the chunk of lefty New West, and adds Anmore and Belcarra. Donnelly only won by 4.5 per cent in 2011, and the additions to his riding come from Tory MP James Moore’s riding, where the Conservatives stomped the NDP by a 26 per cent margin in 2011. Score: Tories, 2; NDP, - 2. The electoral commission’s mandate is to aim for about 105,000 residents in each riding, while seeking to respect natural and historic boundaries. Population growth explains the creation of Burnaby’s new riding—Burnaby South’s main population centre being the Metrotown area. Is this area more Conservative leaning? Will Burnaby will finally get a Tory MP? A re-vote today would give NDP the seat (but demographics in the riding are shifting). So then: Tories, up 2 and the NDP down 1.

Overall in the two cities, the Tories seem to benefit most. But is there manipulation going on? In each province the electoral commission has three members. It is chaired by a judge appointed by the chief justice of the province, and the two members are appointed by the Speaker of the House of Commons. Are the commissioners nonpartisan? I have no doubt. They are B.C. Appeal Court Justice John E. Hall, former schools superintendent Stewart Ladyman and J. Peter Meekison, chancellor of Royal Roads University. Do people participating in the public process seek to influence the commissioners’ decisions in a way that would favour one party over another? Of course—they’d consider themselves remiss if they didn’t. MPs have a few weeks to voice their complaints, and then the new map is set to be approved this summer. I doubt local NDP members will be celebrating. twitter.com/chrismbryan

Mayor demonstrates inability to adapt Re: Mayor Corrigan has his say on the homeless shelter issue (Column, NewsLeader, Feb. 1) Mayor Derek Corrigan’s disdainful comments about his city’s homeless constituents reveals both his failure to adapt to the changing realities of local governance around social issues and a troubling prejudice he has for Burnaby’s most vulnerable. His stubborn refusal to build a permanent shelter in Burnaby limits the city’s ability to address a growing social problem and creates further barriers for those struggling to find housing. It also further stigmatizes homeless people and removes a possibility to build bridges between people of different classes and create healthier communities. It’s very easy to call shelters a bandaid solution, just as it’s very easy to do nothing at all. But the reality beckons Mayor Corrigan to take charge and start working on creating solutions. His refusal to do shows an inability to adapt and lead on this issue. However, even more troubling, and incredibly revealing,

are his comments about the nature of homeless people. To claim that homeless people and those struggling with addiction are beyond hope and are so ruthless that they would steal the gold fillings out of a dying person’s mouth is hateful. It appears his years as a probation officer, prison guard and criminal lawyer have tainted his views on marginalized people and made him extremely cynical. Perhaps it is the position of power he has that has made it difficult for him to empathize. Whatever his motives, the city’s homeless are suffering because of them. Corrigan should apologize for his comments and the residents of Burnaby should demand action to address the city’s homelessness crisis. Sean Condon Executive Director Megaphone

(Megaphone is a magazine sold on the streets of Vancouver by homeless and low-income vendors.)

CITY HALL’S DONE WELL Re: Let’s get moving (Letters, Jan. 30) Burnaby has taken steps to balance the need to keep traffic

moving as well as the needs for residents to have safe residential streets. On Hastings Street, if you do the posted speed limit you will ride the “Green Wave,” a synchronization of the controlled crossing signal lights, that will keep you moving between Boundary and Kensington. While traffic calming measures introduced on residential streets in the Heights and Capitol Hill fall short of what many residents wanted, they are intended to reduce the speed rat runners can attain on our residential streets. New curb bulges on Albert Street are already making it much safer for pedestrians to cross during the peak commuter rush hours. For that I think our mayor and council should be thanked, not ridiculed. Peter Cech Burnaby

RIDING RE-DRAW QUESTIONED Re: Burnaby-North Seymour riding to go ahead in next federal election (NewsLeader, Jan. 30) Not long ago, Canada went through a process of revising the electoral riding boundaries. Here in

Burnaby-Douglas, the proposal involved putting a major water barrier right through the middle of the riding. Not surprisingly, there was huge public opposition to the proposed new boundaries. One of the main points was that, no matter where the MPs office is located, most of the people in the riding would not be able to reasonably access it, especially if they use public transit. Many detailed, workable proposals that would avoid running a river down the middle of the riding were submitted. Essentially, no good reasons were presented as to why this ridiculous change should take place. At the public hearing I attended, about 50 citizens spoke against the proposal. Only one person spoke for it, and the best that he could come up with was to insult the rest of us. Now the Electoral Boundaries Commission has submitted its final proposal, and it is identical to the initial one. The citizens of Burnaby who spoke against the proposal were valued at nothing. All of the good reasons

against the proposal were valued at nothing. The public process appears to have been a sham. With all the smart, experienced professionals on the

commission, do they expect us to believe the best solution they could think of was to run Burrard Inlet down the middle of the riding? The only concrete

reason that remains to explain the choice of boundaries is an attempt to alter the electoral outcome in this riding. Victor Finberg Burnaby

A new regional sales tax adding up to 0.5 per cent to the cost of local goods is being proposed by Metro Vancouver mayors as

one of the new tools they want to help fund TransLink. At 0.5 per cent the tax – tacked on top of the seven per cent PST on transactions within Metro

Vancouver – would raise an estimated $250 million, according to a technical analysis that examined potential new sources. But mayors’ council chair Richard Walton said 0.5 per cent is the “absolute limit” of what he thinks might be proposed, adding just 0.1 or 0.2 per cent would generate “very sizable contributions” of $50 to $100 million. “We expect opposition to come from everywhere,” Walton said. “We’re not expecting the government to say yes right away. We’re not naîve.” The proposals are spelled out in a Jan. 31 letter from the Mayors Council on Regional Transportation to Transportation Minister Mary Polak and sales tax isn’t the only idea being advanced. The mayors still want the province to enable an annual vehicle levy – an

average of $38 per vehicle would generate $50 million – as a short-term option. And road pricing, which could include various forms of tolling or per-kilometre charges on motorists, would be pursued as the favoured long-term transit funding revenue source, embraced by all of the region’s mayors. Other options include either a reallocation of future carbon tax revenue or the implementation of a new regional carbon tax for TransLink. Existing sources like the 17 cent a litre gas tax and TransLink’s property tax are already maxed out, Walton said. He said mayors like the idea of reducing the existing gas tax over time and as other sources come on stream. A regional sales tax would have one advantage over the others – it could be introduced very

quickly. “We’re moving back to the PST anyway,” Walton said. “So this is a logical time to look at it.” Tourists and other B.C. residents who live outside Metro Vancouver and come into town for entertainment don’t contribute as full a share to TransLink’s costs as local residents who pay property tax, he said. With a regional sales tax in place, he said, Abbotsford hockey fans who fuel up outside the region and drive in to catch a Canucks game would still pay towards TransLink through the tax on their tickets, he said. Walton said using sales tax to fund the transit and road system is defensible. “The more efficiently people, goods and services move, the more effectively the economy works,” he said. twitter.com/jeffnagel

Lakers go to Church Grant Granger

sports@burnabynewsleader.com

Monday evening, Paul Rowbotham went to Langley and did a bit of gambling, but not at the Cascades Casino. His first roll of the dice wasn’t too risky as the Burnaby Lakers general manager selected Robert Church of the Minto Cup champion Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs fourth overall in the Western Lacrosse Association draft. Although Church, who is heading into his senior season at Drexel University, is only fivefoot-10, his skill is sky high. He demonstrated that with 21 goals and 48 points in just eight playoff games last season. He also ran the powerplay for the senior Adanacs during two post-season games. “What I like about him is he’s a good lacrosse player, but what I really liked about him is he was playing as a junior [in the WLA playoffs TYLER DIGBY when], as soon as you walk on the floor there’s pressure on you, and he ran the power play like he’d been doing it all year,” said Rowbotham. “It didn’t seem to faze him. I would have been scared. Here you are setting up the power play to go to the Mann Cup, and it never seemed to bother him. His biggest attribute is between the ears. He’s a smart kid, and then to back it up, he’s got good soft hands, he can move the ball and he can shoot.” The big gamble came two picks later when the Lakers took six-foot-three, 225-pound New Westminster native Tyler Digby. He had 94 points in 17 games for the Jr. Salmonbellies in 2011 but was injured in 2012. Digby is heading into his senior season at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh where he plays on the field lacrosse and football teams. He told Rowbotham he’ll wait until the CFL draft on May 6 to see if he gets selected or if he’s able to get a free-agent tryout if he doesn’t. “It was a chance we took,” said Rowbotham. “He’s a big body, he’s got really good hands, he can shoot and he can do all that stuff.”

New Burnaby bench boss The Burnaby Lakers have announced former player Rory McDade will take over as head coach replacing Bob Johnston, who had led Burnaby into the Western Lacrosse Association playoffs for the first time since 2008 but had too many time commitments to continue. Lakers general manager Paul Rowbotham said he was impressed with McDade when he coached the Surrey Stickmen in the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League and also helped out as an assistant with the Lakers. “He did a good job, so it was kind of a natural progression,” said Rowbotham of McDade’s work with the Stickmen. “He was well-respected in the room. When he spoke the place went quiet, and that should carry over into the coaching.” McDade, who played for the Lakers between 2003 and 2011, is still working on securing his assistants for the seasons.

Burnaby didn’t have a second-round pick, but took Hamish Brindel of the Delta Islanders with the first selection of the third round, 15th overall, and then Nathan Klein from Coquitlam with the last pick of that round, 21st overall. The Lakers’ other picks were Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam), Brock Whitely (PoCo), Brian Gillis (Langley), faceoff specialist Andrew Bromley (PoCo), Sean O’Neill (Delta), Emerson Scharnberg (Coquitlam), Nicholas Kozuback (Delta) and Jamie Malanfant (Delta). • The first Burnaby Jr. Laker taken was David Beaumont by the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the seventh round. Lots to do in Burnaby on Family Day It may be a new holiday on the calendar, but there will be plenty of family activities in Burnaby on Family Day, Feb. 11. Burnaby Village Museum and all of the city’s recreation centers will have special programming from badminton to Zumba. Burnaby Village Museum will be holding Family Day at the Carousel, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each $6.50 admission per person includes unlimited rides on the historic C.W. Parker carousel as well as the opportunity to stroll the streets, shops and homes of Burnaby as they might have appeared in the 1920’s. There will also be art activities and heritage games for the kids. Go to www. burnabyvillagemusuem.ca for more information and to preregister.

Bonsor Recreation Complex kicks the day off with all-ages badminton at 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Other activities throughout the day include a Zumba party for kids 5 years of age and up, accompanied by an adult, family yoga and gym as well as family swim. Cameron Recreation Complex will have familyfriendly activities like parachute games, face painting, riding toys and open play 4:30-6:30 p.m. Kensington Arena will have a special family skate from 12-3 p.m. For more info and a detailed schedule of events at Burnaby’s rec centres, go to the Festivals and Events link at www. burnaby.ca/Things-To-Do.html Lougheed Town Centre will host two free shows by beloved kids’ entertainers Bobs & Lolo, followed by a meet and greet. The performances are at 12 and 1:30 p.m., near London Drugs.

The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre won’t have special programming on Family Day, but they’ll be putting on their ninth annual Jan Ken Pon! Family Games Day on Saturday, Feb. 9. Kids will try traditional Japanese games like tops and cup & ball, as well as constructing sumo wrestlers and beanbags. The highlight of the day will be the rock-paper-scissors tournament. Admission is $5. For more go to centre.nikkeiplace.org. Unfortunately reading won’t be on the agenda for Family Day, as all branches of Burnaby Public Library are closed Sunday, Feb. 10 and Monday, Feb. 11. Families with energy to burn may want to check out the bowling at Revs Burnaby. The centre has a $40 holiday family special for 90 minutes of bowling, including shoes, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit revs.ca.

PREPARED FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE BY THE

The decision to have children is loaded with questions. About finances, the strength of the parents’ relationship, where they are in their lives. Rarely, though, do they give much thought to their own mental health. Nisha Sikka is trying to change that. She’s a youth member of the Transition to Parenthood team at the FORCE Society For Kids’ Mental Health that has embarked on a special project to get people thinking and talking about their mental health as they take on the challenges of parenting. Until Feb. 11, Family Day, Sikka and other members of the team will be stationed in the downstairs lobby of the Cameron Recreation Centre with special posters inviting visitors young and old to share their thoughts to complete the statement “As a parent I want…” The ideas expressed on the posters will eventually form the basis for a video exploring the issues surrounding mental health and parenthood. But as people read some of the

entries and contribute their own with a coloured Sharpie, Sikka says she hopes it will spark a dialogue. “A lot of people are scared, they’re worried about how to handle the challenges of parenthood,” says Sikka. “It’s important for them to know they’re not the only one.” Like the parent who finished the statement by writing they wanted “a gold medal.” Or another who requested “more resources.” That’s something Sikka says she’s heard a lot. “There are lots of programs to help parents once they become parents, but we need to

be more proactive before they become parents.” That’s especially important when it comes to mental health, which encompasses everything from a person’s emotional well-being to the state of their relationships with family and friends. “Mental wellness is a part of a healthy lifestyle,” says Sikka. “To teach mental wellness as a parent, you have to be mentally well yourself.” To learn more about the Transition to Parenthood project or to download a toolkit to become a part of it, go to www. forcesociety.com
