Central Alberta dancers get experience of a lifetime Students from Dancer’s Edge Studio set to perform on Caribbean cruise

hirty-seven Central Alberta dancers and three dance instructors are on the trip of a lifetime and will have the opportunity to perform on a cruise ship this week.

The troupe, from Dancer’s Edge Studio, ranging in age from seven- to 19-years-old, set sail aboard the Carnival Glory on Feb. 3 from Miami, Florida.

They will return Feb. 10.

The Caribbean cruise will travel to Mexico, the Grand Caymans and Mahogany Bay. While on board, the dancers are set to perform a 30-minute number with eight dances in total entitled 6 O’clock News for hundreds of guests.

Their performance includes tap, jazz, musical theatre and lyrical.

Heather Buelow, owner/operator and dance instructor at Dancer’s Edge in Blackfalds and Lacombe said she has been looking for an opportunity like this for her dancers.

“This is the first time our studio has had the opportunity to do something like this. I was looking for something and came across this program called ‘Dancing at Sea’.

“There are a few similar programs to this one but what attracted me to this particular program is that we dance on the actual main stage,” she said.

“The dancers will also have the chance to watch all of the other shows on the ship as well just to get an idea of what the professionals do and what they could possibly do if they are interested in turning their dance into a professional career.”

Family members are also traveling with the dance troupe.

In total 112 people including parents and grandparents of the dancers are on board which makes the performance all the more special.

“The dancers are so excited to go and they were vibrating (before we left).

“It’s a great opportunity for them.”

Buelow said the dancers will also board the ship in their matching track suits, something that they had to fundraise for, to also help create excitement of their performance.

They are also hoping to perform a flash mob at some point on the ship to get interest building amongst the guests for their show.

“We do also get a stage rehearsal which will be great. That will help the dancers feel more confident as well.”

During their week at sea while on the ship they will also get to meet the captain.

They will also have the opportunity to have a workshop with

some of the professional cruise ship dancers who regularly perform on the vessel -- something that Buelow is hoping will have an impact on her students.

“THIS WILL GIVE THE DANCERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE DANCE WORLD AND TO HELP OPEN THEIR EYES TO THE POSSIBILITIES AND TO SHOW THEM WHAT IS OUT THERE. ALSO BEING ABLE TO WORK HARD AT SOMETHING, PERFECT IT AND PERFORM IT IN FRONT OF A LARGE CROWD – IT WILL REALLY GIVE THEM SELFCONFIDENCE.” HEATHER BUELOW “This will give the dancers

an opportunity to see the dance world and to help open their eyes to the possibilities and to show them what is out there.

“Also being able to work hard at something, perfect it and perform it in front of a large crowd – it’s something will really give them self-confidence.”

She added she hopes her dancers come away from the experience with some new perspectives.

“I hope they come away with a sense of adventure and knowing that there is more than just our tiny little studio out there.”

Buelow said she is looking forward to seeing her dancers shine on stage.

“To see the dancers on stage is going to be amazing. I will probably be bawling. They are all my kids and to see them do that will be something that is so special,” she said.

“Some of my senior dancers could have this as a job potentially – it’s a first step for them. I will be extremely proud.”

This is the first time the studio has traveled to perform and Buelow is already looking ahead to future opportunities.

“We are now hoping to plan something like this every two years because the families do have to pay for their own trip,” she said.

“Our next future trip is to dance Disney World in two years which will be exciting.”

In addition, the dancers will be performing the number they are set to showcase on the cruise ship, called 6 O’clock News at the upcoming Central Alberta Family Expo at Westerner Park.

Council says no to plebiscite on ward system

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Red Deer City council has opted to not hold a plebiscite on a ward system in tandem with the fall municipal election.

“I WOULD LIKE THE PUBLIC TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMED. I’D LIKE A BIT MORE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS IT WITH THEM THEN TO JUST PUT IT TO A PLEBISCITE.” COUNCILLOR LYNNE MULDER Councillors Frank Wong, Buck Buchanan and Chris Stephan brought forward a Notice of Motion at this week’s meeting regarding holding a plebiscite on the issue.

“I have my own personal opinion on the ward system. I’m not necessarily sure that it’s the best system we could have, but I’m certainly not adverse to asking the public what their thoughts on it are,”

said Buchanan, adding that if it’s what voters want, council must consider it.

“We don’t have to be afraid or concerned about it. It’s just to see what people want.”

Councillor Dianne Wyntjes said she had mixed feelings on the issue.

She also questioned what was different now than back in April when council opted to maintain the atlarge system.

“For me, the question right now is this the time?

In four or five years, we might be there. I guess if it were to go to plebiscite, I would show my cards and I would tell the citizens from my discussions with councillors in ward systems, I prefer representation atlarge,” she said.

“I see us as looking at our City as a whole. I like that we don’t see it as ‘my area’ or ‘my territory.’ We make our decisions representing the City.”

Councillor Lynne Mulder said she wasn’t convinced a plebiscite was the way to go.

“Let’s give people the opportunity to say ‘Yes we do’ or ‘No we don’t.’ If they don’t, that’s fine.

“I’m absolutely comfortable with that,” he said adding there are many communities smaller than Red Deer that have that kind of system.

“Give the people that opportunity. Have some faith in the public,” he said.

Harmonizers offer ‘singing’ Valentines

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, four gentlemen will sing two love songs, present a rose and special picture memento for just $40.

It’s become something of a favourite local Valentine’s tradition and a fundraiser for the group,” said David Crozier-Smith, who has been a member of the Harmonizers for about 10 years.

Several quartets will out and about, popping up across Red Deer and area on Feb. 14.

Virtually no place is off limits -- the guys are game to show up at homes, hospitals, jobsites, restaurants and banks – you name it. It’s always a load of fun, with reactions ranging from tears to just a touch of embarrassment.

“The highlight is the reactions that we get from the recipients,” explained Crozier-Smith.

“It ranges from total shock and embarrassment to often tears – people are often overwhelmed and surprised. It’s the best thing – those reactions. It’s such a unique way of saying ‘I love you’ and of bringing that message to a special person.”

It’s not just for the ladies – women are encouraged to

arrange a Harmonizer visit for their husbands and boyfriends as well. And it’s also not just for couples. CrozierSmith said the Harmonizers can be sent to friends and family members such as grandparents from their grandchildren, too.

“We’ll sing to anybody, and we will sing anywhere.”

Anyone interested in booking a serenade for their sweetheart should book as soon as possible.

The Wild Rose Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus regularly visit nursing homes, seniors’ lodges and care centres and also perform at a variety of community functions.

Crozier-Smith said it’s all about the joy of singing and of sharing it with the community.

“We have a good time together – it’s almost like a little family,” he said.

“And singing is such a great way of expressing emotion, and bringing emotion out of other people whether it’s enjoyment or whatever it might be. That’s what I really find is the best thing about it – the enjoyment we bring to other people.”

Much of what the Harmonizers do is centered around learning the craft of Barbershop singing, the roots of which come from songs in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

City council passes anti-smoking bylaw

Council adopts motion to form capital fund

City council adopted a Notice of Motion about forming a process of dealing with the flow of capital financial requests that are regularly brought forward.

The City will now explore establishing a Community Capital Fund to respond to these types of requests.

Over the past several years, City council has received substantial requests for grants or loans from such local organizations ranging from Red Deer College to Central Alberta Theatre.

“I have a growing concern about the number of capital requests that council gets from the community,” said Councillor Tara Veer, who put the motion forward.

“When are these grants allocated? How are those grants prioritized? I think we can think outside the box a bit in terms of how they are adjudicated,” she said.

“I think ultimately what we heard tonight is that the

Red Deer City council passed its tougher anti-smoking bylaw at this week’s meeting.

Originally introduced two weeks ago, the bylaw bans smoking within 10m of playgrounds, sports fields, spray parks, seasonal skating rinks and skate parks.

At that meeting, Councillor Paul Harris said he felt the bylaw didn’t go far enough and had noted he would like to see it extended to all public events.

This week, he said he wanted to see the bylaw broadened to include a ban on smoking at other events such as parades, public markets and children’s festivals.

Council chose not to make such amendments at this week’s meeting, however.

They opted to pass the original bylaw and consider changes in three month’s time.

Ultimately, Harris said he was pleased the bylaw was now in place and also that its scope could be widened in just a few months. “I’m pleased the bylaw is going through, and I’m pleased

we’ve got these three months and a more definitive timeline,” he said.

“My biggest concern two weeks ago was that we didn’t have a set timeline for this to come back,” said Harris.

“Because there was no timeline on it, it could have been pushed off as other priorities sat in the way, so it could have always been on the wings.”

Harris said with the suggested amendments, the bylaw would significantly move Red Deer forward in its anti-smoking stance.

“It would make the bylaw the toughest in the province. We’re behind Calgary and Edmonton – we used to be the leader with our smoke-free bylaw, but we’ve gotten behind. This takes us up to the standards of the big cities.

“I’m hopeful that what this does is provides a way to self-enforce and selfpolice, and I think that’s the key to it.

I recognize that there is no number of bylaw officers we could ever put in place that could ever (fully) enforce this, but I do understand that it gives us a moral responsibility to help one another to have a better place in our community. That’s where we can go, really, with this bylaw.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

City needs to adopt a broader financial sustainability plan,” said Veer. “And then move forward on how we are dealing with capital grants and loans to our community.

City Manager Craig Curtis recommended that the discussion over a capital fund be part of an dialogue on financial sustainability.

Ultimately, Veer said she appreciated that council ad-

opted the motion because it puts on the public agenda “An issue that we have been grappling with for years – especially the past year. We’ve had numerous requests – substantial financial requests for capital grants or loans, and we don’t really have any process in how we treat these loans.

“I think it’s important that we’ve identified it as an issue that we need to come up with some answers for.”

Council has given direction to City administration to develop, within the overall discussion on financial sustainability, how Council will “fairly and equitably” deal with these types of requests that come to council.

“Instead of dealing with it on an ‘ad hoc’ basis, we would have some sort of process put in place for it. It will be long time before we see the first steps of it, but I think we took an important first step in at least recognizing we have an issue we need to deal with.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION Global awareness This community is full of people from all walks of life.

Sometimes it takes someone to share their story in order for us to appreciate what we have and where we live. We often go about our days and forget about those across the globe who maybe don’t have it as easy.

One City man has reminded us of just that.

Monybany Minyang Dau, a native of Sudan who now lives in Red Deer, has recently launched a project in hopes of giving back to people in his homeland.

The Atar Water Project includes the goal of digging 10 water wells for 10 communities in South Sudan that will ultimately benefit 90,000 people. The project is in partnership with the Lacombe-based humanitarian organization A Better World.

As part of the launch which was held at CrossRoads Church just last weekend, the documentary The Ladder of My Life was screened. The film tells the unbelievable true story of Dau. Although he and his family, which includes his wife Susan and their two young sons, have called Red Deer home for several years now, he is burdened about the severe struggles facing his homeland.

South Sudan, which had been through years of conflict with its

northern counterpart, declared its independence in July of 2011 – but the obstacles have hardly diminished. Making things worse, is that northern Sudan is still trying to wield its power and influence over land, resources and people of South Sudan.

But by building awareness, Dau is confident that things can improve. People here at home can also support non-governmental organizations that are already working there including A Better World. Helping to provide clean water for villages like Atar is also a literally life-changing step via Dau’s project. Deaths from contaminated water are constant.

People like Dau remind us of how lucky we really are to live in a city like Red Deer where we have easy access to necessities such as water and food. Although there are some in our community who do struggle, we are fortunate compared to those in other parts of the world, like South Sudan.

Of course it is important to help those in need in our community, but we shouldn’t be limited to that. It’s something that can be achieved as there are frontline workers already living and making a difference in these places.

With our support, they can continue to make significant changes in such broken and often wartorn communities.

Taking time to volunteer is good for your soul I am not one to really make New Year’s resolutions because I think most of the time you are setting yourself up for failure. I am sure many resolutions that were set last month have already been broken.

Before the New Year I was reflecting on how great 2012 was. In addition to getting married, I continue to have good health, I have a roof over my head, I have a job that I love, I have a husband who works so very hard and I have great friends and family who surround me. I am very lucky.

When Jan. 1st rolled around I wanted to make a point of being more grateful for my life and to really appreciate how lucky I tru-

I have never had to use a House myself and I don’t even know anyone who has had to use one either, but my interest started when it was announced one would be built in Red Deer.

As I followed the progress through writing stories for the paper and attending press events, including the grand opening, I heard the inspiring stories from those who benefited from the facility. I quickly realized what the people at the facility did was very special and I wanted to be a part of it somehow.

Groups of up to eight people can cook a meal for the guests who are staying at the House. Sounds simple – and it really is. But something so simple is something that is so appreciated by those on the receiving end.

A couple of weeks ago my mom, mother-in-law and myself cooked our first meal at the House after attending an orientation. Our group, called The Fabulous Foodies, made tortellini soup for all of the guests.

As we were cooking some of the houseguests came to the kitchen and told us how good it smelled and how ex-

cited they were for dinner.

We were able to eat with the guests as well which was really neat. Although we sat with the other volunteers who were at the House, it was so nice to see the guests enjoying the meal that we had cooked.

They even thanked us after as well.

It felt so rewarding to be able to do something for the families who have so much on their minds as all of their energy is spent on their children who are in the hospital.

Often cooking goes by the wayside as they spend their days with their children.

Most of us have the luxury of having a home-cooked meal each and every night.

You have no idea what goes on in the lives of others, and one small action can mean so much.

We have since cooked another meal last Friday and the experience was just as special.

I actually enjoyed it more the second time and I know I will continue to enjoy it even more.

I am looking forward to continuing with the Ronald McDonald House throughout the year. Our group has signed up to cook a meal at the House once a month.

I have volunteered before, but this has been a reminder of how much I enjoyed it. It really is good for the soul. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

‘Fairer tax system’ needed

CitySpeak TARA This week, Express reporter Erin Fawcett has asked Councillor Tara Veer questions regarding the Notice of Motion she put forward in hopes of establishing a community capital policy.

You recently presented council with a Notice of Motion requesting the establishment of a community capital policy and reserve designation. What do you hope to accomplish for the community through this policy and funding plan?

“There are a few key objectives for establishing both a formal policy for grants and loans (which I previously advocated for and is currently under review) and a formal mechanism for responding to these requests.

“My hope is to help ensure process fairness and timeliness for community organizations and institutions making capital requests of the City; transparency and accountability of council in our decision making to the public we serve and planning for the financial sustainability of the City in both the short and long term by better managing the balance between making necessary investments in our community without placing onerous financial expectations on our citizens,” said Veer.

“By establishing clear policy rationale to help inform grant and loan allocations and consolidating and designating specific reserve funds, council will be able to give timely responses to community requests and our citizens will have a clearer sense of what council is or is not able to invest in any given budget year without financially overburdening the general public.”

What prompted you to identify this as an issue that council needs to address?

“Over the past few years council has received more frequent and more substantial financial requests from community organizations and institutions for capital grants and loans. Council recognizes that the City has a role to play in supporting notfor-profits in delivering necessary services and programs to our community, and in the absence of formalizing this role there is a lack of clarity regarding when and how these requests are considered on the public agenda,” said Veer. “Over the years council has, for example, approved loans to the SPCA and Gymnastics Association and capital grants to the Westerner, Red Deer College, the Curling Centre, and the Museum and Art Gallery, and has denied other requests, with little to no formal policy or governing principles to help adjudicate when council says ‘yes’, ‘no’, or ‘not yet’.”

She added other major requests in areas of sports, recreation and culture have been discussed by council, but the City has not yet taken a formal position, other than on an ad hoc basis, on the role that the City has to play in respect to the City’s partnership with our community.

“My goal is ultimately to articulate the City’s role in a community capital plan and then find a balanced, reasonable means of implementing that plan in such a way that does not compromise the affordability for people to reside in and own a business in our community,” said Veer.

Are there any other general thoughts that you would like to share regarding the necessity of a community capital plan?

“I view this motion as complementary to other motions that I have introduced either at council or advocated for as audit committee chair with respect to grants and loans criteria, establishing a debt limit ceiling, and a review of the City’s reserve position,” said Veer.

“Given that the City has limited debt capacity and that there are limits to the amount of reserve contributions that we can reasonably expect our citizens to finance through their taxes and user fees and charges, we need to find a means of transparent planning for community capital over time while being responsive to our community’s various pressures within the City’s fluctuating financial capacity.”

She added council recognizes that they have a role to play in community infrastructure investment beyond the core infrastructure that the City provides as part of its’ basic mandate.

“This investment is especially important when some municipal ‘up front’ commitment is required for community organizations/institutions to access federal and provincial dollars. By way of example, if the City can invest $1 million to leverage $10 million from the provincial or federal government, this saves the City from eventually needing to make the full $10 million investment down the road,” said Veer.

“While I am a firm believer that there is only ‘one tax payer’ in that municipal, provincial and federal dollars all belong to the public, if the provincial or federal government have indicated that they are spending those infrastructure dollars regardless, my preference is to see those funds be of maximum benefit to Red Deerians instead of those dollars being allocated elsewhere.

“In summary, my hope for Red Deerians is to have a comprehensive community capital plan in place so that the City partners with our community to establish a joint, long term vision for community development in a pragmatic and financially achievable manner.”

Albertans have recently heard Premier Redford and her ministers reporting on the lower income position of the Alberta government.

There has been no mention of the specific actions they will be taking to balance the budget, while there have been repeated statements saying there will be no new taxes.

This leaves concerns that the shortfall will be used as an excuse to reduce education and health care and human services funding.

The 2012 Premier’s announcement of poverty reduction strategies and the merger of several departments into human services have been positive changes.

The present downturn in income from resources must not give rise to a return to past policies of cutting funding for education and healthcare.

Having used the 2012 Alberta Government online budget tool, http://www.budgetchoice.ca/2012/index.php?s=r I believe a 2% integrated harmonized provincial sales tax (excluding food and heating fuel) is fair, and the 10% flat tax should be replaced by a progressive and graduated income tax.

The Environics Institute ‘Income inequality and tax fairness’ report gives good advice. It can be found at http://www. taxfairness.ca/sites/taxfairness.ca/files/ resource/keith_neuman.pdf.

Although the report is on the nationwide Canadian perspective, there are similarities and differences for the province of Alberta.

Due to large but fluctuating income from resource industries the province has been shielded from the need to come to terms with sufficient tax income and taxfairness. Ideological anti-tax rhetoric has been continually used by the present and past government to stay in power.

The 10% flat tax was introduced to further that policy.

A more positive approach would be to look at graduated taxation and tax fairness, putting our province’s income on a more stable footing while allowing resource income to flow to the Heritage fund.

Premier Redford should use the support given by progressive voters at the 2012 election to build a fairer, more ethical tax system and budget.

Local smoker speaks out The non/ex-smokers have mostly won their battle.

We smokers are on the run for sure!

I am 76 years of age, a law abiding citizen, have never driven drunk in fact I don’t drink, do not ‘do’ drugs, don’t speed while driving, raised a family, earned my retirement, pay all my taxes and bills on time etc.

But I do enjoy smoking a cigarette which apparently is now a criminal offence.

We see no smoking signs everywhere.

Is it about time we are told where we may smoke?

Patients and visitors to the Red Deer Hospital are forced to go a considerable distance into the cold winter weather or rainy days. (Hospital staff can be seen out there too).

This same situation is seen at Calgary hospitals.

Considerable fines are now in a bylaw for smoking offenders.

These fines are to be imposed on a complaint basis. If a complaint is made against me will I be able to meet my complainer face to face or is this another opportunity to complain anonymously?

Although it does not appear to be the case, smokers have rights too.

Most of us try to respect non-smokers and live with the present difficult position we are placed in. Some ashtrays placed out for us in a designated smoking area would be appreciated and leave much less mess around.

Non-smoker defends smokers The City of Red Deer is going too far with the new smoking by-laws. These fines and bans go far beyond a reasonable public policy. I am a non-smokier and I ask for reasonable actions that respect the rights of smokers. Some of the biggest victims of modern discrimination are smokers. In a free society, people should be free to make their own life decisions.

When the smoking issue first arose,

smoking areas were established and this was reasonable. Areas for smokers should be reestablished and clearly marked as well as no-smoking areas.

Your column has performed a good public service by informing the public of the toughening up of the current smoking bylaw and fines that are to be imposed.

Trial adjourned

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express An upcoming trial has been adjourned for a man charged with drinking and driving. The crash killed a 13-year-old boy on Canada Day in 2010.

Rodney Arens, 35, of Red Deer is charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, three charges of refusing to provide a breathalyzer sample and breach of recognizance. He has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

On Monday, the Court of Queens Bench heard that Arens no longer had a lawyer. He had previously obtained Will Willms of Red Deer.

His trial was scheduled to take place from March 25 to May 17. Now that it has been adjourned, it is not likely another one will take place until next year.

“I have a couple of counsels that I have been trying

to get a hold of. I have only had three days to come up with something,” he told Justice Monica Bast.

Bast corrected him and said he has had seven work days to find a new counsel since informing the court he was without a lawyer.

Arens will return to court on March 4. “You will have to have counsel here then,” said Bast.

In 2010, police said Anouluck ‘Jeffrey’ Chanminaraj, 13, was riding in a Honda Civic with his 18-year-old brother Jamie and 20-yearold sister Stephanie, who was driving, at about 11 p.m. on Canada Day in 2010 when a Dodge Ram pick-up truck crashed into the passenger side of the car.

Their car was turning left through the intersection of Taylor Dr. and Kerry Wood Dr. when it was allegedly struck by a drunk driver operating the pick-up truck. The siblings were on their way to see the Canada Day fireworks.

Utility rates going up Fees for garbage collection, recycling, landfill, water and wastewater services as well as electricity rates will go up March 1.

City council approved a new utility bylaw on Monday and rising provincial costs are the main contributor to electricity rate increases.

The result will be an average utility bill increase of about $4, which will total approximately $98 per month, or $3.25 per day.

There are two components to the rise in cost of electricity – for the costs of operating Red Deer’s distribution system and for the costs associated with the provincial transmission system. For a typical household these changes will mean an increase of roughly $1.50 per month for the province’s transmission system and about $0.60 per month for the City’s distribution system.

The McKenzies – a Red Deer pioneer family One of the most remarkable of Red Deer’s pioneer families is also one of the oldest.

DAWE The McKenzie family came to Red Deer from the Red River country of southern Manitoba more than 130 years ago.

The McKenzies were a very old fur trade family before their arrival in Central Alberta.

Their father, Captain David McKenzie, worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company in the Columbia River country.

Their mother, Mathilde Bruce, was a native of the Red River settlement.

In the spring of 1882, Roderick McKenzie, with other family members including Magnus Brown and William Beauchemin, came out from Headingly, Manitoba to settle along the Red Deer River, between the mouths of Waskasoo Creek and the Blindman River.

Although their first winter was a hard one, with the cold claiming several of their cattle, they went back to Manitoba and returned with eight families of relatives and friends.

The trip was an epic one.

They traveled more than 1,600 km (1000 miles) crosscountry, with no roads to follow or bridges to cross.

They brought with them with several cartloads of household effects, supplies, a steam boiler and engine, a threshing machine and a complete sawmill outfit.

A later group made a similar trip, but in the middle of a bitterly cold winter.

The McKenzies and the other Headingly settlers planted their crops and built up their livestock herds.

In order to make some cash income, they put their sawmill into operation and began selling lumber to the other settlers for $35 per 1,000 ft.

When Fort Normandeau was built during the Riel Rebellion in the spring of 1885, they sold supplies and provisions, first to the soldiers and later to the North West Mounted Police after the police took over the fort.

The spot where the old Calgary-Edmonton Trail crossed the Blindman River was notorious as a dangerous ford.

Consequently, the McKenzies created a new secondary trail, dubbed the McKenzie Trail, to the mouth of the Blindman where they built a ferry.

The McKenzies were devoutly religious.

In 1883, Roderick McKenzie hosted Rev. A.B. Baird, a Presbyterian minister.

The first formal church service in Central Alberta was conducted in the McKenzie home.

On May 1, 1887, the McKenzies invited Rev. Edward K. Matheson, an Anglican missionary and an old friend from the Red River, to hold a service. Nearly 50 people attended and 15 took communion.

The next day, Roderick McKenzie led the organization of an Anglican congregation. Church wardens and vestrymen were elected.

It was a remarkable instance of a group of Métis settlers organizing a grassroots congregation.

The fledgling congregation was able to persuade Bishop Cyprian Pinkham to periodically send Rev. Edward Paske-Smith to minister to the group.

Paske-Smith was later replaced by Rev. Henry Collier who took up residence in the community.

Rev. Collier also opened a school by the McKenzie’s farm.

Unfortunately, the McKenzies, and many others, found out that they had settled on land that the federal government had sold to the Saskatchewan Land and Homestead Company.

Although they had legitimate legal claims, by way of squatters’ rights, the government was oblivious to their petitions and protests.

Finally, in 1890, they gave up in disgust and moved north to Beaver Lake, near the current town of Tofield.

The McKenzies did make a return trip to Red Deer.

In 1894, David and Roderick got the contract to build the first traffic bridge across the river.

Although they did not have formal training, they built quite a serviceable bridge.

Five years later, government engineers built a replacement bridge. It washed out a few months later with the spring flood.

POLICE BRIEFS RCMP INVESTIGATE ARMED ROBBERY RCMP are on the lookout for a man who allegedly robbed a liquor store.

On Feb. 1st at 1:50 a.m. Red Deer City RCMP responded to a robbery with a weapon at the North Hill Liquor Merchants on 71 St. It is alleged that a male entered the liquor store with his face covered. He brandished a knife and demanded money. The employees complied and the suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured during the robbery.

The suspect is described as an Arabian male who spoke with accent. He was about 5’3” tall and was wearing a black jacket, black toque, blue jeans and black runners with a white and red strip down the side.

Charges pending after altercation

In the late morning hours of Jan. 31st Blackfalds RCMP were called to a rural residence in Red Deer County where it was reported an altercation between an adult male and an adult female involving a knife was taking place.

The complainant to that incident indicated he had a firearm and had discharged it at some point during this altercation. Members from

On Jan. 30th at 11 p.m., the Red Deer City RCMP responded to a call of a robbery at the Dominos Pizza located on 50 Ave. and 45 St. It is alleged that two males entered the store stating they were only there to warm up. Shortly after, one of the males went behind the counter and told the male employee to leave.

The employee had attempted to call 911 when one of the suspects began choking him. The employee attempted to flee the store

when he was physically assaulted by both of the suspects. The employee was eventually able to escape and contact the police.

The RCMP located both male suspects who had left the store on foot.

Police have charged David Fehr, 44 and Ernest Bedore, 42, with robbery, forcible confinement and overcoming resistance to commission of offence.

MAN DIES AFTER COLLISION WITH TRAIN A 21-year-old Benalto man has died as a result of a collision with a CN train on Jan. 30th. The crash happened about 7 km west of Sylvan Lake at 2:20 p.m.

Sylvan Lake RCMP along with Sylvan Lake fire and ambulance responded to a collision between a full size Ford pickup and a CN train on Twp. Rd. 385 and short distance east of RR 23.

On arrival of emergency crews, the man who was the lone occupant of the pickup was located trapped inside the vehicle.

Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to extract

the driver. STARS was dispatched, however the driver died as a result of his injures at the scene prior to their arrival.

Police say it appears the pickup had been traveling on the township road and struck the front of the southbound train as the train crossed the roadway.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene and assisted with the investigation.

The name of the deceased is not being released.

GRAFFITI INCIDENTS RISING IN THE CITY Recently there has been an increasing amount of graffiti tags observed throughout the City of Red Deer.

Graffiti is vandalism. Its presence can increase people’s perception of crime and invite additional graffiti if it is not removed.

The City of Red Deer’s Community Standards Bylaw defines graffiti as the defacement or disfigurement of any property or object using paint, ink, stain, whitewash, scratching and etching.

A Red Deer man has been charged after police stopped the vehicle he was driving.

On Jan. 15th at 4 p.m. the Red Deer City RCMP street team were on patrol in the Village Mall parking lot when they recognized a man driving a vehicle. Police knew the man was a suspended driver.

A traffic stop was initiated and he attempted to flee from police.

In doing so the suspect vehicle struck a civilian vehicle, causing both vehicles to stop. The man was arrested and a subsequent search revealed he had several grams of cocaine in his possession.

Ricky Joseph Severin, 31, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, driving while disqualified and three counts of failing to comply.

He was released on a recognizance with several conditions and will appear in court next month.

Strike ends for health care workers after agreement reached

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Employees of the Symphony Senior Living facility in Aspen Ridge are back to work after reaching a collective agreement this past Saturday.

About 130 seniors care employees walked off the job at the 154-bed centre located at 3100 22nd St. on Jan. 28th.

The members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees ratified the agreement in a vote last Saturday. A tentative agreement between the union and employer was reached last Friday.

The strike began after AUPE representatives negotiated with the employer, but talks failed when Ontario-based Symphony Senior Living who operates Aspen Ridge, de-

manded the right to terminate any employee without cause, officials have said.

“Unfortunately our members had to go on strike to obtain industry standard wages. That is becoming more and more common in seniors’ health care as the government closes beds in public facilities and contracts the services to private, for-profit companies,” said AUPE staff negotiator John Wevers.

AUPE was able to improve compensation and working conditions. Wages will be brought up to the industry standard by the end of the agreement, increasing compensation for Licensed Practical Nurses by 18.4%, Health Care Aides by 38.3%, and support employees by 17.2 to 18.2%, depending on the classification. LPNs and HCAs will receive a $1,500 signing bonus while support employees re-

ceive $1,200 (both bonuses prorated to hours worked).

“These disruptive labour disputes are an obvious side effect of the Alberta government’s policy to privatize seniors’ care and Alberta Health Services’ refusal to make contractors spend the money they are given for employee wages on wages,” said AUPE President Guy Smith. “Health care employees shouldn’t be paid less simply because they are working for a private contractor – Albertans’ medical needs demand the same level of experience and professionalism whether it is a private or public facility.”

AUPE also negotiated important workplace rights for employees including just cause provisions, access to a grievance procedure, and seniority rights (calculated according to date of hire) that will provide structure and fairness in the workplace.

“The workplace will now have rules to ensure hours are awarded fairly by a process that is transparent and understandable. That was a top priority our members identified and I’m happy to say AUPE delivered on it,” said Wevers.

Art of Friendship is an eight-week course designed to help people who feel lonely or isolated learn and practice the skills that help people make and keep friends.

Both an evening and a day time course will be offered this winter.

The first course begins Feb. 28 and runs weekly through April 11. The classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dawe Branch of the Red Deer Public Library at 56 Holt St. The RDPL is a cosponsor of the February course.

Wedding ‘fairy godmother’ comes to Red Deer

BY TANIS REID Red Deer Express World-renowned celebrity wedding planner Jane Dayus-Hinch, host of TV reality show Wedding SOS recently made an appearance in Red Deer at With this Ring Bridal Gala where she did a ‘Plan Your Wedding In A Day’ workshop.

Dayus-Hinch has been a wedding planner for 28 years and has done numerous weddings. “When I got to 1,000 weddings I stopped counting.”

In addition, she took 15 years worth of other courses relating to weddings. “I trained to be a photographer, I trained to be a florist, I trained to be a cake decorator, I did calligraphy. I did every single aspect of a wedding event so that if something goes wrong I can pick up a camera and do it, I can do the cake, I can do everything.”

After working for the Phillip Morris company organizing their grand prix each year she decided to switch gears and start to focus on weddings, however, the real reason she became a wedding planner came much earlier in her life.

When Dayus-Hinch was four her mother worked for a large company called Rubery Owens. Sir Alfred Owen was a large industrialist. Princess Margaret was coming to see the factory and Dayus-Hinch’s mother was asked if her daughter would present a bouquet to the princess. Mother agreed.

When Princess Margaret arrived she was instructed to curtsy before the princess and to give her the flowers. Four-yearold Dayus-Hinch looks around the room.

Her mother nudges her, ‘give the princess the flowers’.

She continued to survey the room. Her mother then realized what was happening.

‘Give the flowers to the lady.’

Dayus-Hinch had been waiting for a true princess with the full gown, the tiara and the sparkles. She had been greatly disappointed.

Growing up, Dayus-Hinch lived across the street from a church. One day she and her mother set off across the street as a wedding was ending. A ‘princess’ came out, and it was a bride. “And that was it. I was hooked,” she said.

Dayus-Hinch worked in the UK as a wedding planner for many years before she was headhunted to host the Canadian show Wedding SOS. When she agreed to do the show she was surprised by some of the details. She did not know that the show was in Canada, she did not know that she would only have 10 days to move to Toronto and she thought that she was only coming for six months.

The show was in production for five years but has now stopped filming.

Dayus-Hinch took a year off but she has now filmed a pilot for a new show and the networks are currently considering it.

In addition to her television shows she has started up two ventures.

She has recently launched her new company JDH Weddings & Events. This is her launch for Canada, as apposed to being all UK-based. Here, brides come to her and she can do whatever it is that they need her to do.

“And now we have the décor in Calgary so my second office will be in Calgary but this will be further down the line.”

CITY BRIEFS ANNUAL CHUCKWAGON TARP AUCTION The 15th annual Pony Chuckwagon Tarp Auction takes place March 13 at the Sheraton Hotel - Red Deer in Bellinis Sonic Lounge with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the auction to follow at 7 p.m.

CENOTAPH DESIGNATED HISTORIC RESOURCE A treasured monument honouring the service and sacrifice of the soldiers of Central Alberta has been designated a provincial historic resource.

‘Where’s My Tribe’ geared to local artists

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express A new initiative is aiming to bring together local artists of all persuasions for opportunities to connect and build community.

The Red Deer Arts Council is hosting ‘Where’s My Tribe’ on Feb. 22nd from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Scott Block’s Centennial Stage.

This mixing and mingling event is free and is designed for members only, but new members are welcome, said Diana Anderson, the Council’s coordinator.

Red Deer Arts Council memberships may be purchased at the door.

Anderson said one of the goals is to get a discussion going on the arts in Red Deer and what they do for a community.

“It’s basically about how do we get everybody together? From visual and performing artists to literary artists, it’s about getting them mixing and mingling.

We actually have a fairly substantial arts community, but a lot of people work in isolation so they don’t a get chances to visit with each other.

“We also want to see how we can support each other, and how we can raise the profile of the arts in Red Deer.”

Two speakers are lined up for the evening - Liz Taylor from Tourism Red Deer and Janice Shimek of the Downtown Business Association. They will talk about their organizations and how they are using arts and culture to create excitement in their programming and marketing efforts.

Shimek will also be

touching on how artists can connect with local businesses, as many artoriented events and festivals take place in the downtown core.

‘WE ALSO WANT TO SEE HOW WE CAN SUPPORT EACH OTHER, AND HOW WE CAN RAISE THE PROFILE OF THE ARTS IN RED DEER.’ DIANA ANDERSON Taylor will be discussing how local artists can get involved with providing entertainment or an artistic element to local events and conferences for example. “We’ve got some great performers here in town – just fabulous – so it’s about making use of local talent.

We’ve got some very creative folks here.”

Overall, the hope is that these kinds of strategies will help spread the word further across the province and beyond that Red Deer has a very vibrant arts community.

“I think it’s a closely guarded secret,” he adds with a laugh. “But we have internationally-renowned artists here.”

The ‘Where’s My Tribe’

event is also a chance for artists to showcase their talents by bringing an item – examples include painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, CDs or books. Anderson said that although they are not in a position to sell, artists can ensure their contact information is included.

“I just think it’s going to be so much fun - to mix and mingle with folks that have a lot in common. I think it’s exciting.”

Meanwhile, the evening will also include door prizes and other giveaways.

In the spring of 2010, three organizations, the Red Deer and District Allied Arts Council, Cultural Charter Partners of Red Deer and District and the Cultural Development Association of Red Deer (Culture Link) merged to form the Red Deer Arts Council.

Their objective has been to develop the artists, the arts and a culture delivery system, arts and culture engagement and audience development.

Alberta cancer rates trend downwards Lacombe County Council has given first reading to Bylaw No. 1172/13 and Bylaw No. 1173/13, the purpose of which are to amend the general regulations and policies in both the County’s Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Development Plan. The amendments are being proposed to provide greater clarity to the regulations and address any issues which have arisen since the adoption of the documents in 2007. Examples of some of these amendments include: addition of “city” to policy 3.10 (a)(i) clarification of the definition for front lot line; inclusion of maximum site coverage regulation for the Country Residential “RCR” District; the Country Residential Estate “R-CRE” District; and the Residential Conservation Cluster “R-RCC” District; and the addition of setbacks to the Higher Density Lakeshore Residential “R-HDLR” District.

The rate at which Albertans are being diagnosed with cancer or dying from the disease is continuing to decrease, according to newly released data from Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Alberta’s cancer rates have steadily declined by about 1% per year between 2002 and 2010. Mortality rates have also decreased over the past 20 years, falling by 2.8% yearly between 2004 and 2010.

“Directly or indirectly, cancer affects the lives of almost every Albertan, which is why the Alberta government remains committed to providing worldclass cancer prevention and treatment,” says Fred Horne, minister of health.

“It’s clear that the efforts of our researchers and clinicians are making a difference: the proportion of Albertans developing cancer is going down and the proportion of Albertans who survive cancer is going up. These are encouraging trends.”

Dr. Paul Grundy, AHS – Cancer Care senior vice president and senior medical director, concurs.

“The data suggests our public health efforts in areas such as tobacco cessation, sun safety and can-

cer screening are having a positive effect. And the steady reduction in mortality rates is a tribute to the leading-edge care available in the province and the hard work and expertise of our oncologists and the health providers who support them.

“There’s still a great deal of work that remains to be done across the entire spectrum of cancer care, but we’re headed in the right direction.”

AHS – Cancer Care is working on a number of major projects to improve cancer control across the province – from prevention, screening and research through to treatment and survivorship.

This includes the ongoing expansion of the Alberta Radiation Therapy Corridor. Radiation therapy is now available in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge, and new radiation therapy facilities are being constructed in Red Deer and Grande Prairie.

It also includes the development of the patient navigator system in all community and associate cancer centres in Alberta.

Other projects and initiatives include increased funding and development of the clinical trials program, and the provincial rollout of the Screening for Distress program which aims to reduce the distress many Albertans feel after they are diagnosed with cancer.

Also, there are the two reports recently released which include the 2010 Report on Cancer Statistics in Alberta (http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/1774. asp).

This is a bi-annual look at trends in new cases of cancer and deaths due to cancer over the past 20 years.

This report provides detailed information on prevalence, projections, the chances of survival, lifetime risk of developing/dying from cancer and potential years of life lost from all cancers combined, top 12 cancers and childhood cancers.

The second report is the 2009 annual cancer registry report (updated in 2010), which includes annual counts of cancer diagnoses and cancer deaths occurring among Alberta residents.

This information is used as a quick reference for clinicians, researchers and program planners who require annual counts and rates of Albertans developing and dying from cancer.

Along with the falling incidence and mortality rates, the new statistics show that about one in every two Albertans will develop cancer in their lifetime and approximately one in four Albertans will die from cancer.

The reports also show that the increase in new cancer cases over the past 20 years is mainly attributable to population growth and an aging population.

AHS – Cancer Care encourages all Albertans to be conscious of the variety of lifestyle choices – including diet, tobacco use, physical activity and time spent in the sun – that can affect the likelihood of developing certain cancers.

Sirens for Life campaign falls short

BY TANIS REID Red Deer Express Red Deer’s Sirens for Life campaign for 2013 has come to an end and although donations fell short the Canadian Blood Services are still pleased with the results.

Sirens for Life is a partnership between the City of Red Deer Emergency Services and the local RCMP to see how many blood donations they can bring in during the month of January.

This year’s goal was to bring in 304 blood donations. The 2013 campaign ended last Thursday and 167 blood donations had been collected – 80 of those came from Emergency Services and the RCMP and the remaining 87 units

came from the community.

This is the 11th year that the Sirens For Life campaign has been running. Since its start in 2003 it has helped bring in over 82,000 blood donations across the province.

Each donation can save up to three lives.

In total, more than 500 local hospital patients were positively impacted throughout this challenge.

“We did receive tremendous support from the City of Red Deer Emergency Services and the RCMP,” said Tanya Paul, community development coordinator for Canadian Blood Services. “Ultimately we are really happy and it is the local hospital patients who truly benefit from each and every unit that was brought in. We are really grateful for that.”

Canadian Blood Services reminds Red Deer residents to continue donating blood for hospital patients in need.

“The need for blood is always constant. That is why we need people to step up and donate whenever they can,” said Paul.

Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. Much of the blood that is transfused every year is done under emergency or trauma situations. In Canada, hundreds of thousands of people each year receive blood components or blood products following accidents, during surgery, burn therapy, hemophilia, cancer treatments and other blood-related diseases.

Each month the Red Deer area needs between 900-1,000 units of blood. The average cancer patient in Red Deer will need five units of blood per week. Leukemia patients require up to eight units per week.

ENTERTAINMENT Red Deer College stages literary classic Dracula Bram Stoker’s legendary tale unfolds on the Arts Centre’s mainstage

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express The timeless terror of Dracula will be hitting the Arts Centre mainstage, opening Feb. 7.

Additional shows run Feb. 8-9 and Feb. 12-16 with curtain at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances also run Feb. 9 and Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.

The story, which was written by Bram Stoker in the late 1890s, is being brought to life by Calgary based director/actor Haysam Kadri, who is thrilled to be making his directorial debut at RDC. “There’s always been an intrigue -- with people of all demographics – about this creature,” he says of Dracula. The creative team selected Steven Dietz’s script. “This is the closest to the actual novel. He’s really stayed true to Stoker’s storytelling.

“It’s a classic tale for a reason, because it transcends time. He’s a compelling figure.”

The play features a ‘stylish villain from 1910 London who transforms from an old, decrepit man to a virile youth’ via his taste for blood. Of course, capturing the essence of a novel, which Stoker wrote in 1897, and fitting it into the constraints of a two-hour production is an immense challenge.

“You can get into real trouble when you adapt a novel like that into a two-hour play because you are trying to find the heart of the story. You have to create these nuanced characters from less of a template. It’s very challenging, but that’s why this version is one of the better ones.”

Kadri has worked as a unit and session instructor at RDC in the past, but Dracula marks his first time directing one of the season’s major productions. He said it’s been an absolute delight, and given him the opportunity to connect with staff and even some of the students he’s taught and gotten to know over the years.

“It’s fantastic. I have a special interest in student development, education and mentorship so this is right up my alley.” As for being at the helm of a production, Kadri counts the collaborative process as one of the key highlights of the experience. “I really appreciate actors more when I’m sitting on the other side of the table,” he explains. “I love the process, and I love investigating these stories and finding a common ground. I also like to be a part of a moment when an actor ‘gets’ something.”

Sharing from his own theatrical experiences is also a joy for him. “I love seeing that and being in the process, and I love the energy that the students bring.

“I love to put it in their hands and ask ‘What do you think this

play is about?’ That’s where the dialogue happens and it becomes a democratic process and not a regime about me telling them ‘You go there, you stand there’ that’s not really creative.”

He also encourages the young actors to make bold choices as they interpret their roles.

“We’re not talking about everyday, ordinary stuff. This is an extraordinary tale, extraordinary characters in extraordinary circumstances. “The way they lived back then, and the sensibilities of the world and the language was way different from what we do.

So part of it is about immersing them in that world and asking them to put themselves into those situations. They do starting to invest in and buy into the world

picture we are trying to create.”

The design team of Carrie Hamilton, Cindy Zuby, Patrick Beagan, Sui-Fan Wong and Jeremy Spencer have created a stunning, eerie atmosphere that includes a chandelier made of bones, bats, blood and coffins all brought together with a stunning, brooding soundscape – original music written specifically for this production by the Calgarybased Spencer.

“I read the script and I was thinking this is epic in its scope.

I really wanted to push the envelope in terms of what we could do with the show, and I knew this was the place to do it with the creative team and staff here.

Hamilton, via her usual extraordinary design creativity, makes Dracula larger than life. Dracula is a stylized version of 1910 London transforming from an old, decrepit man to a young a viral one - revitalized by his consumption of human blood.

“There are a lot of themes people can tag onto with this play,” he adds. “It’s not just about a guy who bites people’s necks and sucks blood – there’s a true person under that cape. There are a lot of questions that many people will identify with and ask themselves, but also it’s about the idea of exploring the dark side of your soul. I think everyone has that dark side. So how does that affect the world, and do we get out of that dark side?

“There are so many avenues you could go with this play – there are so many themes. There’s the archetypal good versus evil.

There are many things that will provoke thought. That’s what we are discovering too, is what is this play about?”

Meanwhile, Kadri is an actor and a sessional instructor who has taught Theatre Arts at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.

For six seasons and more than 20 productions, he has been a company member with the Stratford Festival of Canada. Kadri is also the artistic producer for The Shakespeare Company and an education coordinator for Shakespeare in the Park in Calgary.

Over the years, he has made it a priority to establish a foundation for classical work by entertaining audiences through producing and performing of classics, developing and cultivating the talents of emerging artists and focusing on student education via performances, workshops and classes.

Former City actor/dancer performs at library Wilmari Myburgh presents a lively, love-themed musical show

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Local residents will get the chance to see an outstanding former Red Deerbased ‘triple threat’ perform Thursday at the Red Deer Public Library downtown.

Originally from South Africa and a Red Deer native, Wilmari Myburgh, 22, is performing a one-woman cabaret at noon as part of the First Thursdays in the Snell Auditorium concert series.

“I think the thing I love most about it is that it’s an unconventional way of making a difference for people,” she explains. “I’m a lot more drawn to comedic things now. I love to laugh, and I love to make people laugh. Life can throw such crazy things at

you that if you can’t find a reason to laugh, what’s the point?”

Music, acting and dancing have a power to lift spirits and point to differing perspectives as well, she said. “It can bring joy to people.”

She will be performing an original cabaret entitled Love Stories: The Anatomy of Falling in Love, comprised of new and old musical theatre show tunes and personal anecdotes. She’ll be accompanied by Deb Protsack.

“I kind of made it to have a Valentine’s theme, but it’s not really your conventional Valentines concert. It’s more about the struggles and the funny things that happen as you are trying to find love.”

for music and for performing in general. She started singing at a very young age and competed in her first music festival at age three.

From then on, she was hooked and started taking voice, piano, and dance lessons.

Growing up, Myburgh remained heavily involved in the arts through participation in dance competitions, music festivals and community theatre. Locally, she appeared in Ignition Theatre’s productions of tick, tick….Boom! and The Vagina Monologues among others. She was only 17 when she landed the role in tick, tick…Boom! thanks to Matt Grue, who was the artistic director of the professional company.

In 2008, she had the opportunity of being cast in the TV series Triple Sensation II in Canada. She was chosen from hundreds of hopefuls across Canada to be a finalist on the show, ultimately landing in the top 12. “It was the craziest, most amazing two weeks of my life – the things I learned and the people I got to work with. It was definitely an enriching experience.”

While filming, she had the honour of working with theatre legends from Marvin Hamlisch to Patsy Rodenburg. Following filming, she moved to New York to round out her world travels and to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance (Music Theatre) at NYU Steinhardt.

“I was thinking if I had to study somewhere else and then move to New York, it would be a hundred times scarier,” she explains.

“This way, I got to ease into it a little bit. It’s totally a monster on its own to tackle.

It really inspired me to ‘run’ to New York.”

Since graduating from NYU, Myburgh has been working on theatre projects all over the U.S., her

most recent credit being at the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin where she played the role of Mrs. Fezziwig in Scrooge the Musical.

Of course, living in the competitive world of New York theatre has its challenges – producers don’t always find you right for a part. It’s an intrinsic part of the business, but it never gets easy.

“I think the important thing is to keep trying. As long as you believe in yourself, other people will even-

tually see that too.”

She is thrilled to have been given the chance to perform in Red Deer while she is here visiting her family, and she is excited to give back to the community that gave her her start.

‘Theatrical rock’ with Incura Canadian hard rock fans will soon have the chance to experience Incura’s ‘theatrical’ hard rock via a show at The Vat Feb. 7.

The Vancouver-based band is currently on a headlining Canadian trek, and will be making their first-ever appearance at this year’s Canadian Music Fest in Toronto in March. Their self-titled debut disc is set for release on Feb. 26.

It offers their first taste of new music since an EP in 2009. Incura is described as wielding a dramatic sound that is “as much Iron Maiden as it is Queen.” Influences run the gamut from metal to progressive rock with elements of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera thrown into the mix as well – lead singer Kyle Gruninger’s roots are in professional theatre.

Rounding out the band are Jim McLaren – keys; Jon Olson (bass); Royce Whittaker (guitarist) and Phil Gardner (drummer).

Looking back, there was something that clicked creatively amongst the guys from

the get-go. And it was this intensity and energy that brought them to the attention of fans and industry professionals alike.

Creating their moniker by combining the name of a previous band with that of a spell from the Final Fantasy games, Incura was formed in a small Canadian city in the prairies a few years ago and has already toured with the likes of Stone Temple Pilots, Shinedown and Apocalyptica.

These days, they refuse to hide behind studio wizardry or pre-recorded tracks.

Each member delivers a level of musical complexity that is exhilarating to watch.

Incura spent two years writing songs that would come to life on this new selftitled six-song release. They’ve tried to maintain a message - be a leader not a follower. ‘Always question why. Be your own person.’ As the guys point out, it’s this positive projection of passion and tenacity that unites the band with their devout fans.

Six ways to boost your metabolic rate One of the most important things that you need to be thinking about as you go through your fitness program is how you can supercharge your metabolic rate and burn more calories each day.

WHEELER Those who are able to boost their metabolic rate are going to see faster fat loss success because of the fact that they are burning up more calories minute per minute compared to those who aren’t using the same techniques with their diet and workout program.

The first way to boost your metabolism in your workout program is to add some interval training to the mix. Interval

training, where you alternative bouts of very high intensity exercise with lower intensity active rest periods is going to do more to get you in top shape than most types of cardio training and is going to help you accelerate fat burning for hours after the workout is finished.

These workouts only take 20 minutes or so to complete, so they’re a fast and easy way to get in and out of the gym in record time.

Interval training is very demanding on the body however, so only perform this style of workout a few times each week.

Second, you also need to make sure that you’re focusing on getting more protein in your diet.

Protein is the a nutrient that will cause your body to burn up more energy just to break it down, so you can see fat loss success.

For every 100 calories or so of

protein that you consume, you’ll burn up around 25 of those calories just digesting it. Add on top of that the muscle building and muscle recovery properties and you have a really nice addition.

While this may not seem like much, it will add up over time.

Moving along, drinking green tea rather than coffee is a great way to boost your metabolic rate and see faster results.

Green tea is high in certain compounds that will help to stimulate the metabolism so that you burn more calories each minute throughout the day.

Furthermore, green tea will also provide antioxidants to help keep free radical damage down, so this too can reduce your risk of health problems.

Cayenne pepper is one spice that you may want to consider using more in your diet plan. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin,

which is going to help to stimulate the body to burn up more energy as heat, increase your metabolic rate and furthering along fat loss.

If you aren’t a fan of cayenne pepper, you could also consider adding chili peppers to your dishes for the same effect.

As an added benefit, those who are consuming these spicy foods tend to eat fewer calories overall, so you’ll also reduce your calorie intake as well as boosting your metabolism. When you’re going about your workout program, if you want to boost your metabolic rate, make sure that you consider using shorter rest periods as well.

Doing weight lifting exercise without much rest between your sets is going to force your body to do more work total in less time, which creates what’s called the ‘after burn’, which means you’ll burn more calories for hours after the workout is finished.

This will also provide some cardiovascular benefits to your program as well, so that means you’ll have to do fewer cardio workouts in your fitness program.

Finally, last but not least, make sure that you get enough sleep as well. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest killers of fat loss success yet most of us are not sleeping enough each night.

Getting at least eight hours of sleep at night will boost your metabolism and help you make a fast recovery from your workout sessions as well.

So there you have the primary points to remember if you want to boost your metabolic rate and see faster weight loss results with your fitness program.

Stay committed, use these tips, and you will be seeing results faster than ever before.

Just how safe is your seafood selection?

“You should eat more fish,” is a remark I often make to patients.

But I find that recently more patients reply, “But are fish safe to eat?”

They worry about the amount of mercury and

PCBs that may be in fish.

So today when it appears that everything has a touch of contamination, how safe are fish to eat?

A report from the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, published in

Environmental Science and Technology, analyzed seafood inspection data from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan.

It states that today 85% of seafood used in North America is imported and much of it is farm-raised (a practice called aquaculture) in Asia and elsewhere in the developing world.

One negative is that other nations have varying standards for aquaculture.

For instance, they may use drugs which are banned in North America.

But the big negative is that most overseas farms are not inspected by North American officials. This means that only a fraction of imported seafood is tested for drug residues, microbes and heavy metals.

In fact, on the world stage, U.S. inspection leaves much to be desired.

For example, the Hopkins report says the FDA (Federal Drug and Administration) in the U.S. checks only a mere two percent for these contaminants.

This compares with 20 to 50% in Europe, 18% in Japan and 15% in Canada.

JONES Moreover, Europe tests for the presence of 34 drugs and the U.S. 13.

There was more bad news for me. I love shrimp, but according to Hopkins’ researchers, shrimp and prawns were the fish that most often exceeded drug residue limits. Crab, basa (a kind of catfish), eel and tilapia were other problem fish, many of which are farmed.

Vietnam was the country that had the most drug violations, followed by China, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Taiwan and Malaysia.

The question is, how much of a problem are drugs that are used to control diseases when fish are so crowded in farm operations? The greatest hazard is for farm workers. For the rest of us, no one knows

how much damage chronic low-level exposure harms us. There’s also concern that bacteria may develop resistance to antibiotics.

So, if like me you enjoy fish, how can you eat it without becoming depressed? Dr. David Lowe, author of the Hopkins study, suggests trying to locate domestic farmed seafood which has a greater chance of being inspected.

And if you’re lucky to live in Canada, there is no history of export violations. The Seafood Watch Program in the U.S. lists the following fish that are high in omega-3 fats, low in mercury, PCBs and pesticides; oysters (farmed), Pacific sardines (wild caught), rainbow trout (farmed), salmon (wild caught from Alaska), freshwater Coho salmon (farmed in tanks in the U.S), albacore tuna from the U.S. or British Columbia and arctic char (farmed).

It’s best to select small fish which are less likely to contain contaminants and have higher amounts of omega-3 fats. But since larger fish eat these small-

er fish, they have a higher concentration of contaminants. Wild and canned salmon are always a good choice. A three-ounce serving of farmed salmon contains over 2,000 milligrams (mgs) of omega-3 fats.

Shrimp have only 250 mg.

If you’re looking for fish with high amounts of magnesium which protects against fatal cardiac arrhythmias, order tuna or crawfish. And if you’re concerned about blood cholesterol, boiled or steamed lobster has only 72 mgs per 100 grams compared to 75 for skinless chicken and two poached eggs.

Looking at the total picture, the health benefits of fish far outweigh the risks.

In fact, while I write this column, researchers report that people who eat fish regularly were 12% less likely to develop colon and rectal cancer.

Today, there are many risky contaminants in our air and water that are worrying. But I’m not losing any sleep over those in fish.

SPORTS Olympic medalist shares knowledge with local players

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express It’s been some months since Canada’s women’s soccer team was bounced from gold medal contention at the London Olympics with a controversial loss to the United States and the sting can still be felt by goalkeeper Erin McLeod.

“I do speeches all the time and I still cry when I get to that part about that game,” she said shortly before giving a clinic to young players with the Red Deer Soccer Association.

“But you know what, there’s something about that bitterness that we all carry that’s driving us forward and for that I’m very grateful because we got a bronze and we’re upset about it.”

The spotlight was on the team during those days in the summer and McLeod said the attention to the team and the sport is great but a little puzzling at the same time.

“It’s funny, we’ve been a top 10 team for a long time but now people are watching and tuning in and what ever their reasons I think it’s great,” she said. “But I also think it’s great we have young girls that have female role models and I think that’s one of the coolest things that has come out of this.”

She gives credit for the teams’ evolution to former coaches Even Pellerud and Caroline Morace who both had different styles which contributed to the success the women have had under John Herdman.

Pellerud had a kick and chase philosophy while Morace was more about possession, she said.

“Now we’re really focusing on tactics and we want to play like Barcelona, we want to keep possession, we want to be a more crafty team and I’m really looking forward to the future.”

“I’m saving peanuts but you do what you can and you do it because you love it and all that other stuff comes,” she said.

She plans on staying with the game until the next Olympics down in Rio de Janeiro and along the way take part in the World Cup. She gets plenty of enjoyment doing clinics like the one in Red Deer where she sees young players with that look in their eye,

just like she had when she was their age.

“It’s the same, it’s that passion,” she said. “It’s just that fun and that enjoyment and that’s why I do it, to give back.”

She feels young players are looking up to them and in her view they’re making a good choice.

“I can speak for my team only but I’m very proud of the people I work with and I think we’re a successful team because we all

have big hearts and we’re good people.” One of those is Christine Sinclair, who McLeod describes as a very humble person who has won basically every award you can win at their level and she is viewed as a strong leader.

She said it’s an honour to be a teammate with a player who has scored more than 140 goals in her career.

A new and unique exercise available in City

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express What do you get when you take the cardio from snowshoeing and team it up with the flexibility of yoga?

It’s called ‘snoga’ and anyone can give it a try right here in Red Deer.

“So people get out on the shoes and have an opportunity just to stretch and open up the body after vigorously doing some shoeing through some trails,” said Instructor Tracey Gall, who teaches the snoga program through Red Deer Colleges Be Fit For Life program.

One activity is moving and activat-

ing muscles while the other is just relaxing and softening the muscles after the workout, she said.

The idea to combine the two activities came during a brainstorming session to come up with something to keep people active during our cold and sometimes long winter.

“I don’t think I’ve heard of it anywhere else so I’d like to say Red Deer College and myself have come up with this niche little thing,” she said.

For those who don’t have a set of snowshoes there’s no worry as they will be provided and it’s not a pair of the bulky, hard to master ones you might recall, she said.

“Now we have the more modernized snowshoe, very simple to use, fairly inexpensive to purchase,” she said.

“They’re easy to use and not super heavy to walk around in.”

The basis of snoga is to get active.

There is a list of benefits from snoga including the social aspect of getting together with other people for about an hour and a half.

“The biggest component is becoming active,” she said.

“You’re getting up off the couch, out of your house and you get outside in the fresh air.”

You do need a certain measure of good fortune in order to defy the odds.

There’s a lot of information on the local & national housing situation; check online, attend seminars offered by real estate professionals. Check out books, magazines and web sites. #8: Do it yourself buyers.

Get a realtor, but get a good one. They are paid from the seller, and will work on your behalf. #9: Sloppy buyers. Get a home inspection. The inspector’s job is to check the property and tell you what defects if any need to be repaired or replaced. This will provide you with peace of mind. #10: Buyers who don’t do their homework - check the zoning for the surrounding area, and research possible restrictions.

You don’t want to see a shopping mall going up behind you. #11: The emotional buyer

- emotional buying can lead to disasters and losing control of your deal. You can end up paying too much, buy a poorly built home or end up with an airport in your back yard, if you end up letting your emotions control your buying decision. #12: Location. Location.

Location! -- did I mention location? Location is the key.

The value of your home is affected by those around you. The home may be perfect, but look carefully at the neighbourhood too. No home is an island (usually) and the value is affected by the homes that surround it. #13: Screwing up the offer - it’s not over once you’ve found the house you want.

Now you have to make an offer. Some common mistakes at this stage include; low-balling, paying too much, being afraid to negotiate, being pressured into a quick deal and not asking the seller to pay for extras.

Setting up a home office that fuels productivity One of the biggest mistakes businesspeople make is assuming that working from home will automatically result in a higher level of productivity.

The cost of outfitting a home office A basic home office setup can cost you under $500 if you already have a computer that you can relocate to your new space.
