Huge resource tax-dollar potential Proposed industrial projects could almost double regional district of Bulkley Nechako tax base WALTER STRONG Franca Petrucci of Spectra Energy led a delegation to the Jan. 24, 2013 board meeting of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako (RDBN). His presentation concerned the recently announced joint proposal of Spectra Energy and the BG Group to build a liquid natural gas (LNG) pipeline from Northeast B.C. to Prince Rupert.

The proposed pipeline would be

similar in capacity to the proposed Transcanada Coastal Gaslink project which is currently working on its provincial environmental assessment.

The pipeline would connect shale gas fields in the Fort Nelson and Fort St. John areas to proposed LNG terminals in Prince Rupert via a pipeline running westward more than 140 kms north of Burns Lake.

The Spectra BG Group proposal

is the fourth proposed LNG pipeline that would cross RDBN areas. A fifth pipeline, the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline has also been proposed to transport modified bitumen from Northern Alberta to Kitimat, B.C. Any of these pipeline projects would contribute to the RDBN annual tax base.

As reported last week in the Lake District News, a water-therapy pool would help meet the short and long-term needs of Makereth’s daughter, who will undergo a series of operations in the treatment of her cerebral palsy. She suggested that the pool would also be beneficial to the general physical therapy needs of residents in the Lakes District.

Jared Lalick, a registered physiotherapist with Total Physio out of Houston and Burns Lake, agreed with Mackereth. He said it would be an asset to the region and that it would be kept very busy meeting local needs.

Michael McMillan, Chief Operating Officer for Northern Interior Health, expressed scepticism of the idea that a therapy-pool could be added to the hospital design at this late a date in the bid and construction process.

“It would be a very challenging proposal now, given where we are in terms of the approvals the government has given us,” McMillan said.

“At this point it would be exceptionally difficult to add it [the pool] to the project.”

Northern Health is in the final days of selecting one of three design and build teams that had been shortlisted for the project. A final selection is expected before the end of March 2013.

McMillan said the three

proposals under consideration are very detailed, including engineering, structural, electrical, and architectural plans. Full construction costing is included in the three proposals, without allowance for significant change from the detailed request for proposals at the base of the construction bid process.

Kitimat: A safe option There’s no mistaking the importance of Kitimat, B.C., to the Gateway project.

It’s where the pipeline ends, and it’s where marine operations begin.

I’d like to set the record straight on why we chose Kitimat, at the head of the Douglas Channel, as the site for Gateway’s marine terminal. The answer took thousands of hours of research, planning, engineering, environmental science, oceanography consultation, weather monitoring, and simulation. The Douglas Channel is one of the widest and deepest inland waterways on North America’s west coast.

Government research had already determined Kitimat to be among the safest ports in B.C., and about 1,500 tankers carrying petrochemicals have docked safely at Kitimat over the past quarter-century.

Strategically speaking, Kitimat provides the lowest environmental risk for all aspects of Gateway operations. It offers a safer endpoint for the pipeline route, from a geotechnical perspective. The marine terminal at Kitimat also provides safe approaches for tanker traffic — with a suitable turning basin in Kitimat Arm, and natural deep-water berths that are sheltered from open-water wave conditions.

At its very narrowest, the Douglas Channel is 1.4 kilometres wide — three times wider than Transport Canada’s recommended width for two-way tanker traffic. Water depths in the marine channels are up to several hundred metres.

As an added measure, full simulations of vessel traffic in the Douglas Channel were carried out at a world-leading facility in Denmark. It tested the largest proposed vessels in environmental conditions that tankers would experience in the marine channels. The result was a thumbs-up on the shipping route, endorsed by both government departments and the British Columbia Coast Pilots.

It’s spring somewhere You know that spring is just around the corner when tree planters start to return to Vancouver Island to take advantage of the first region in the province to come into planting season conditions.

I’ve heard that some folks are hanging up their skis and airing out their planting gear to head out from the B.C. interior — still very much in winter mode — to the Island.

Now, even north Vancouver Island is a southerly destination from Burns Lake, so nobody’s calling it spring yet around here. It just feels a little bit like spring is right around the corner because we’ve had so much mild weather re-

Stage set for B.C. senate election Cannon will roar across the Inner Harbour on the morning of Feb. 12 to mark the opening of the 2013 legislature session.

Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon will inspect the troops and present her inaugural Throne Speech, setting out the B.C. Liberal government’s goals for the coming year.

This ritual will kick off a legislative session that is expected to run until March 14, where the official Parliamentary Calendar shows a three-week break for Easter.

Debate is unlikely to resume in April, as the election campaign will be in full roar by then.

This means there will be a grand total of 19 sitting days to push through a budget and a raft of legislation.

Here’s my unofficial preview.

The pre-election budget will be presented Feb. 19

by Finance Minister Michael de Jong. Premier Christy Clark has decreed that it must be balanced, and the government has made extra efforts to armour itself against what will likely be the loudest debate ahead.

First, de Jong held a pre-budget meeting of the government’s blue-chip forecast council in public. This provided a visual record of what happens every year, when the finance ministry solicits the same sort of independent advice as most competent democracies, and bases its numbers on that.

Then the finance ministry hired former Bank of Montreal chief economist Tim O’Neill, who will act as an unofficial version of the parliamentary budget officer in Ottawa. Now that we have simultaneous oversight of child welfare and the police, the next step is to extend it to finance bureaucrats.

Regardless of party, the government has to produce a three-year set of forecasts to replace the current one.

about who is better at predicting the future.

Another new law to be given high priority is one setting up senate elections, to be run in connection with the May 14 provincial vote. Alberta pioneered this, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recent round of senate appointments included Calgary lawyer Doug Black, who won an Alberta senate election held last year.

There was no one appointed to replace Gerry St. Germain, who bid an emotional adieu as a Conservative senator for B.C. last year. St. Germain was instrumental in uniting the splintered federal Conservatives, but he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75, having been appointed by Brian Mulroney in 1993 after losing his seat as an MP. Why would this senate reform be so urgent for the B.C. Liberals now? Well, turnout for the 2009 election fell to around 50 per cent, a record low for a provincial vote. If that downward trend is reversed this year, it will be in large part because people are still mad enough about the harmonized sales tax and a range of other issues to get off the couch and kick some B.C. Liberal butt.

Electing senators remains a popular notion, especially with older, conservative-minded voters in B.C. who identified with the Reform Party. The first-ever senate election looks like the best available shot at boosting turnout among people who are not likely to vote NDP, and who may also be disengaged from provincial politics.

And then there is the provincial sales tax bill. Another kick in the slats for the movie business, for one, and don’t hold your breath for NDP leader Adrian Dix to produce a solution in the wake of his recent trip to Tinsel Town.

The performance of the governing party and the opposition will be scrutinized as never before.

The early start to winter didn’t help our perceptions either. The Omineca Ski Club was able to have their trails in great shape almost a month earlier than usual, so it’s felt like a long winter.

On the other hand, we had a late start to the professional hockey season, which really threw perceptions off for a lot of Canadians. Normally the hockey season would have been well-underway before the start of the ski season, but instead it’s only just started.

One joker said that, with the late start of hockey this year, the Stanley Cup final game should happen sometime within the first week of next season.

Speaking of seasons, what happened to the downhill ski season? Not that it’s much of a concern in Burns Lake, but the early and heavy snowfall didn’t amount to much west of Burns Lake. The ski hill in Smithers has about half the snow pack it had last year, if you can trust the giant snow level ‘ruler’ painted onto the front of a chairlift post.

As for the famously cold Burns Lake winter weather, there hasn’t been much of it. Sure, we had a couple of cold weeks where nighttime lows consistently dropped to minus 27 degrees Celsius, but from what some old-timers have told me, that’s nothing.

Back in their younger days, minus 27 would have been a daytimehigh in the winter that they could only have hoped for. T-shirt weather.

Apparently.

It’s a good thing things are warming up around Burns Lake. With pending reductions to Greyhound bus services coming up soon, there won’t be as many opportunities for people to get away.

This early warm weather and the snow melt it brings might help bring the bike trails into condition earlier this spring. Maybe it’ll be a bumper year, with 2012-13 having an early ski season and an early bike season.

More significantly, an early spring might allow some major construction to get underway around Burns Lake sooner than expected. The arena expansion, the hospital replacement, and of course, the rebuild of the Babine mill.

That’s a lot of activity all at once in Burns Lake. Maybe that’s part of the anticipation for an early spring, just to see these projects finally get underway. For workers whose employment benefits have run out, the spring construction season can’t come soon enough.

McMillan added that the addition of a therapy pool, even a small one, would mean something else would have to be sacrificed to accommodate it.

Miller acknowledges Northern Health’s concerns for making significant changes or additions to the detailed design and

construction guidelines already in hand.

But he remains optimistic that something can be done.

“You’re going to need quite a bit of public support to get something like this moving forward,” Miller said. “We’ve asked RDBN staff to find out

whether there is still an opportunity to have this kind of input into the design and construction of the hospital.”

Miller expects to hear back from staff before the next health board meeting scheduled for Feb. 14, where he expects some discussion of the proposal.

Editor: Although the timber supply does not exist to allow the Burns Lake sawmill to be rebuilt without negatively affecting other mills, communities, and jobs on Hwy. 16, the government has chosen to ignore this reality and appears intent on getting the Burns Lake mill rebuilt at any cost.

“Any cost” includes the commitment to introduce legislation this spring that will enable Cabinet to give Hampton Affiliates, an American company, exclusive rights over specific areas of our public forests in the Lakes Timber Supply Area in a manner that will open the door to the broadscale privatization of our public forests.

In their dying days, the BC Liberals will introduce enabling legislation that will allow politicians to give forest companies exclusive rights over our public forests without the checks and balances of governing laws or regulations, or the guaranteed scrutiny of a transparent public

process.

The Social Credit Party attempted a similar “rollover” of replaceable volumebased licenses to areabased tenures in 1988.

The Socred forests minister of the day estimated their legislation would put over 60 per cent of B.C.’s public forests under the exclusive control of private companies. The NDP Forest Critic at the time dubbed the legislation “privatization on a massive scale,” and it was squashed by significant public backlash.

Twenty-five years later, our forests are under assault by pests, disease, and fire.

As the Auditor General pointed out, we have an appallingly weak forest inventory.

And only a few large companies now hold replaceable volumebased timber licenses.

Yet with the BC Liberal Party on the verge of losing the May election, they’re going to ram legislation through the BC Legislature that will do what Social Credit could not obtain

the social licence to do in 1988.

As last summer’s Timber Supply Committee found out, the social licence still doesn’t exist to support the wholesale rollover of renewable forest licenses to area-based tenures.

That’s why the Committee did not recommend this action.

Instead, it gave some

cautionary provisos to government for consideration “if conversion to more area-based tenures is desirable.”

I plan to oppose this legislation when it is introduced this spring.

Then, decide for yourself whether it ought to be supported or opposed.

He returned another time to look for the Mom, and luckily captured her, too. We all believe Smor will get adopted even before her kittens, as she has an absolutely sweet, gentle, kind, loving nature, not to mention her good looks. Corner ommunity Forest

On September 24, 2004 Burns Lake Community Forest Ltd. became the first organization in British Columbia to be offered a Long-Term Community Forest Agreement. This agreement provided the Lakes District with long-term operational certainty in how the forest resources surrounding Burns Lake would be managed for at least the next quarter century.

While much has changed since Burns Lake was awarded its first community forest pilot agreement, Burns Lake Community Forest Ltd. remains committed to its founding principles, the most significant of which is its pledge to manage “the community forest for the benefit of all residents of the community as a whole.” This philosophical keystone continues to guide the company’s operations, and is considered so important that it has been written into the Burns Lake community forest license document itself.

It’s been 72 years since Burns Lake has been my town

In my Jan. 23 paper I wrote the story about the four horses and a sleigh load of timothy seed that went through the ice on Francois Lake. I guess I did not finish it off. Yes, Billy Bickle did go down with the his load and his four horses but on the way down he noticed the hole in the lake so he swam out of the hole onto good solid ice. He was well known in the Lakes District and was a very good friend of our family for many years. He told me this story. Sorry I slipped up on finishing the story.

As a matter of interest as this I slipped up on. A reader was asking if there were any deaths through drownings through the

ice. I only know of three; Alec Fergeson, Frank Walters and Tommy Juster. There may have been more I don’t know. With all the traffic during the winter months it’s a surprise there wasn’t more.

Little tid bits On the news today there was a question that came up. “Would you use year round schooling for your child?” Lots of questions on that one. I would guess the parents would have something to say on that one. This would no doubt throw a kink into the family summer holidays. I think it’s just talk to even think about doing away with the summer holidays, but then funny things have happened.

Another thing that has come to my attention and that’s on the front of the local paper. Penny going out of circulation what else will they think of next. My thoughts on the matter “musing but confusing.” Things are confusing enough now so this will no doubt add a bit more. I wonder if the U.S.

of A will follow suite.

Big Changes I have seen so many changes in our whole Lakes District. We made our home here and it was good. September 1941 was our arrival, it’s hard to realize how time flies.

We unloaded our box car and stored our furniture etc. in Mat Nourses feed store.

Our home was to be Ootsa Lake and the location would be Marilla.

Mother and Brother Peter took the mail stage from Burns Lake to Ootsa Lake landing and then by boat to what was to be our new home.

My dad and I loaded up our two wagons with a cow and a calf and mother’s dogs and chickens and two geese and a black cat for luck. We also had five horses for the wagons. The first days we made Mrs. Peterson’s here at the landing.

The next day we made Bennett’s stopping house then the third day onto our new home to be. Three long hard days on horses.

It wads dark when we made Henson’s, mother

and Peter met us. As the road was very rough we left our cow and calf with the Vantine’s. We stayed in the Henson store but the deal mother and dad had made went sour so we loaded up and headed back to Ootsa landing.

The Vantine family are very kind and asked to stay with them. We then stayed with the Bergan’s in a new log house. There was nothing suitable for us so we left for Francois Lake and then on October the first 1941 we took over the Francois Lake store from Vern Taylor and we spent most of our life here.

It’s now over 72 years ago. Francois Lake was our home and Burns Lake was our town. I have written a story of our trip and called it Moving on. It’s in much more detail. The store was in a financial bind and the farmers institute had taken it over so it was very fortunate for our family to be there at the right time. Dad had made plans to go back to the prairie and this turned out to be just right for our family. We called it a

miracle.

The store building was ideal for our family, half the building was store the other half was residence.

The post office was a lean-to on the west side also a cool room and next to it a place for a power plant. In the residence there was a kitchen, living room and two bedrooms.

The bathroom was the great outdoors. We hauled up our water from the lake in a barrel. The shop was next to the store joined up by a walkway and the hand gas pump was in front of the store.

A big drum heater kept the store warm. We had counters and the groceries were on shelves. We stocked everything from fresh meat, dried fruit, tin heaters, rifle shells, rubber boots, jeans, horse shoes, you name it we had it. Fishing gear, nails and we were known for our bacon. All our groceries came by truck from Vancouver every week.

It was a general store and big time.

The mail came from Burns Lake by Andy Anderson. All the mail for

both the Francois Lake west and the Southside so it was a busy office.

I think mother got $35 a month. Everard Hickey hauled the mail once a week to the west end offices.

Colleymount, Clemretta, Noralee and Nadina. Norman Schreiber hauled the mail to all the Southside post offices. He used a pickup truck with racks on the sides with hooks that he would hang cream cans on for Anderson’s vehicle to take to town and shipped to the creamery in Telkwa. The empty cans were handled the same way. Shipping cream was a bit of an income for the farmers on the Southside.

Of course this is a bit of history I will try to pass on. I have a photo of the mail being transferred in front of our old store and post office.

The post office wicket came from Evesham, Sask. We had it shipped out here. How well I remember as a kid picking up our mail and now to realize I would be giving mail out through the same wicket at Francois Lake.

Shopping has changed so much in my lifetime.

After we became settled we had an auction sale. We had brought a plow, a mower, a hay rake and the two wagons plus other stuff. I hated to see our two teams sold. Jack Jones of the J.P. Ranch bought the horses, I kept my saddle horse. Some farmer from the Southside bought the farm machinery.

Bill Durban had the machinery loaded and had an accident driving off the ferry on the southside dock. The ferry was not tied up and it slipped out and dropped Durban’s truck with the machinery part way into the lake.

Another truck pulled Bill out so it all ended up just fine.

Just had my grandson Richard and Dimitra drop in and show me their wee little new born daughter, born on Jan. 24, Zya Josephine Ora Neave. I’m so proud to be a great grandpa again. She is a little beauty.

You might not notice until you start to look around, but cheese and gravy laden deep-fried french fries are a ubiquitous sight at the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena. Plans to reuse the existing kitchen fixtures in the multi-use facility expansion of the arena may mean that the deep-fryer has to go. The engineer’s report is not yet in, but it doesn’t look like the grill and fryer range-hood will meet current code requirements in the new kitchen.

Walter Strong Gooey fries could be off the menu in the new concession facilities planned for the Tom Forsyth Multi-Use Facility Expansion.

While clogged arteries might not miss the deep-fried delight, concern was raised at last Tuesday’s Village of Burns Lake Committee of the Whole Meeting that some user groups might miss the moneymaking opportunities of a deep-fryer.

The issue is that the current range-hood in the arena kitchen does not meet the latest code requirements regarding the size of the hood relative to the size of the range burners and deepfryer.

If the kitchen were never moved, then the size of the hood is fine, ‘grandfathered-in,’ so to speak. With the plan to move the kitchen and concession area to the other side of the arena, the kitchen, once it’s put back together again, will fall under new code requirements.

The exact cost of a new range-hood and the related electrical upgrades is not known

because planning has been proceeding under the assumption that the old fixtures would be reused as a cost-saving measure.

Village chief administrator officer Sheryl Worthing pointed out that deep fried goods are not a universal option at arenas across Northern B.C., and she suggested that there might be some benefit to encouraging more nutritious snack choices.

“A few years ago we had a healthy food choices study done and one of the recommendations was to remove the gooey fries from the menu,” Worthing reminded the committee of the whole.

Councillors Frank Varga and John Illes both expressed concern

about the elimination of the deep-fryer.

Illes’ concern was the potential backlash from the Burns Lake Minor Hockey Association (BLMHA). According to Worthing, the BLMHA had already been brought up to speed on the possible menu change and was okay with it.

For coun. Varga, it wasn’t just outraged hockey fans that concerned him, but the financial bottom line.

“We want to provide healthy choices,” Varga said. “But we don’t want to restrict opportunities associated with a concession stand. We need to factor that [the cost of a new hood] into the long-run.”

Surrey-Whiterock MLA Gordon Hogg’s office just released information that is being welcomed by the many thousands of British Columbians opposed to the forced installation of wireless smart meters.

Mr. Hogg’s office reports that recently, energy minister Rich Coleman advised that individual home owners who continue to refuse installation of smart meters will not be forced to have one, “…if you say no and do not consent – that is the end of it….You will not be forced into having one or be in fear of it being installed when you are not at home.”

Policies for multiple family buildings and strata units have yet to be clarified.

The office advises that anyone who has a smart meter and suffers an existing medical condition should contact BC Hydro (smartmeters@bchydro. com), with a copy to Honourable Rich Coleman at emh.minister@gov.bc.ca, asking that the meter be replaced with a non-radiating analog. Individual MLAs should be copied, and it is expected that any further assistance would be available from them.

"I hope this will help to clarify the confusion regarding the refusal of a smart meter.

Last Wednesday, Minister Coleman advised me that individual home owners, who had not yet had a smart meter installed on their home, would not have to have one, says Gordon Hogg, "For those home owners who have had a smart meter installed and have an existing medical condition, we are suggesting that they contact BC Hydro smartmeters@bchydro.com (Cc to Honorable Rich Coleman emh.minister@gov.bc.ca) and ask that consideration be given to have their smart meter removed. They may also want to copy their MLA on the request.

Many thousands want their smart meters removed due to increased electricity bills, to the risk of fire, or to concern for security and the Coalition is gathering names. Greyhound to eliminate one Burns Lake run Reduction in service approved; twice daily trips will soon be reduced to once per day Walter Strong

The anticipated reduction in services provided by Greyhound Canada Transportation ULC (Greyhound) between Prince George and Prince Rupert has been finalized and approved by the B.C. Passenger Transport Board (PTB). Within approximately one month, the night time service between Prince George and Prince Rupert that included Burns Lake will no longer run.

Currently, 22 trips per week run between Prince George and Prince Rupert. When the route reduction comes into effect, there will be 14 runs between the two cities, or one round-trip run per day.

This leaves Burns Lake with one daily trip in either direction.

The local routes cited for elimination in the Greyhound’s submission to the PTB are route 5052, eastbound daily, except on Wednesday, departing Prince Rupert at 9 p.m. and route 5039, westbound daily, departing Prince George at 10:30 p.m.

Citing unsustainable losses, including $14.1 million during the 2012 fiscal year in B.C., Greyhound blamed reduced ridership, high fuel and maintenance costs, inflexible regulations, and unregulated competition from pro-

A parent and student meeting will take place in the library on Tuesday, February 12th at 6:00 pm for this year’s Grade 8 students and 6:30 pm for this year’s Grade 9, 10 and 11 students. It is important to know what each course is about, so we encourage parents to attend the evening meeting. Everybody cuts Footloose at LDSS Musical production brings together talented stage vets and promising newbies for a stellar show Walter Strong The Lakes District Secondary School Mainstage production of Footloose the Musical had its opening night on Jan. 31, 2013.

It ran for two more nights and was the fruit of countless hours of choreography, practise, rehearsal and stage production involving more than 50 students in three different classes.

Rayanne Charlie, drama teacher and production director, was pleased with opening night.

“We had a great turn-out,” she said. “The kids were very excited to get the response they did.”

The two-hour production was handled with apparent ease by the actors, dancers and singers. Charlie said that there was not only a lot of experienced players on stage, but also a lot of new participants who faced some challenges to get as good as they have so quickly become.

While those on stage basked in the glamour of it all, Charlie wanted to call attention to all the people that work backstage, man-

said McPhail. “Talking to the kids at the school, we are able to pass along our passion for the sport and also our love of Canada. Many of the kids we talked to were fascinated with our country and wanted as many details as they could get.”

You might expect that a love for hockey this deep naturally started at a young age, but not for Cherie McEntire, who is back for a second trip.

“My love of the game started with my kids,” McEntire said.

“Watching them play inspired me to try. I was hooked right away.”

This trip to Denmark and Sweden on Feb. 18, 2013 might be tougher on ice than the Iceland trip.

“I expect the hockey to be a lot faster and more intense in Denmark and Sweden than it was in Iceland,” said McEntire.

Janette Derksen, another returning player, expects a faster game as well. But she found things pretty fast the first time around.

“My most memorable moment on the Iceland tour was facing up to a full line of the men’s Iceland national team,” said Derksen. “I played goal and they didn’t hold back on me. They played their game and I played mine.”

Derksen highlights that not only are there six players from Burns Lake going overseas, but another two players on the team are former Burns Lake residents and former Women’s Vortex Hockey Team.

“I find it amazing that our small town of Burns Lake is providing the majority of the women’s team for this tour,” Derksen said. “Way to go Burns Lake; small-town girls can have worlds of fun.”

The Burns Lake Bruins took third place over the weekend in a Pee Wee A tournament at the Tom Forysth Arena in Burns Lake. The winning goal in the hard-fought battle for third against Fraser Lake was scored by Devan Anderson making it 3-2 for Burns Lake. It was an improbably tight shot that Anderson flipped up and over the Fraser Lake Goalie’s left shoulder from within a few feet of the net.

From that point on Burns Lake held onto their lead despite a lot more scoring chances on both sides. Bruins goalie Cameron Peterson held off a

one man-advantage after Fraser Lake pulled their goalie at the close of the third period. Fraser Lake rushed their goalie back out to net when Gracie Janzen broke away from deep in the Bruins end to almost make it to the empty net. Her defensive play, as well as Peterson’s and Braden Puglas’ play in net drew loud cheers from the hometown crowd all weekend.

Friday’s opener saw Burns Lake tie Prince George 1-1. Saturday afternoon had the Bruins beat Terrace in a lopsided 8-2 game. Despite the score it was a tough game. Terrace never backed-off and barely kept their aggression in check as they

refused to give up.

Saturday evening Burns Lake played Prince Rupert. It was a long way to travel for Rupert to pulloff a 3-3 tie, and they were lucky to do that. The first period was played mostly in the Rupert end with Burns Lake scoring two unanswered goals.

Rupert picked up their game in the second period, with a wild shot getting past Burns Lake just before the period was interrupted for ice maintenance.

Rupert kept up their momentum and took the lead, until Steven Strizich scored on a fast breakaway to tie the game going into what would be a scoreless third period.

This year's Tweedsmuir Park Rod & Gun Club annual wild game banquet will be Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.

The wild game banquet is an event that has become ingrained into the Tweedsmuir Park Rod & Gun Club (TPRGC). The club itself was started in 1954, and the founding members and original directors were John Shelford, Bruce Thompson, Francis John Wilds, Arthur Ager, and William Richmond were committed to the development and interest of the community, hunters and anglers while promoting proper, moral and legal conservationist efforts.

The Tweedsmuir Park Rod & Gun Club's constitution states, "It is the purpose of the Tweedsmuir Park Rod & Gun club to unite all Sportsmen in the Lakes District of British Columbia primarily of the conservation and preservation of fish and game and sport shooting in all areas if British Columbia."

The wild game banquet supports these words, providing the opportunity for all sportsmen and women to be united in an area where they can truly appreciate the atmosphere of those who are passionate about hunting, angling and nature.

The earliest confirmed date places the beginning of the wild game banquet in 1961. What might have started as an awards ceremony, has grown into a social event to include other forms of entertainment, such as a silent auction, a draw, and a dance with a live band. It also gives the opportunity to the members to enter and win contests in regards to best animal hunted, the largest fish caught and best photos taken within the region.

Previous years for the banquet have seen many different types of wild game prepared for people to taste and enjoy. These different types of wild game have been everything from cougar, beaver and lynx to ruffed grouse and rabbit to various types of fish. Today

the banquet still offers an odd assortment of game, as well as fish, including caribou, elk, moose, deer, bear, buffalo, salmon, trout and char. Generously donated by our local hunters and anglers, one can always look forward to what may be served.

The members of the TPRGC encourage everyone to join in this event to help make it more memorable than the last.

"Being a member of this organization is not just about throwing lead out there but working with people that like to laugh and have fun, but that also have a genuine passion for what is right on the land and in the waters of our community. It is a combination of the experience of the long standing members and the enthusiasm of the new young members that will allow the Tweedsmuir Park Rod & Gun Club to grow and have a voice in how we manage our natural resources in the area," said Bob Fowler president of the club.

Week of culture in Burns Lake

Les Miserables has two showings left this week; Swan Lake arrives next Tuesday CONTRIBUTED The Beacon Theatre is presenting Les Miserables, a classic French novel by Victor Hugo that was turned into a musical in 1985, and is now a movie in 2013.

The musical became a global phenomenon in 1985, with numerous international productions. It ran on a Broadway stage in New York for over 6,000 performances, and at the time it closed, it was the second longest running musical in Broadway history.

The London stage production has run continuously since 1985, making it the second longest running stage production in world history. The stage show celebrated its 25 year anniversary in 2010 with three London productions running simultaneously.

And now as a movie, it was filmed on locations in Paris with all songs sung and recorded live in one take.

The film has had good reviews, with some calling it one of the greatest films ever made.

It has been nominated for eight Academy Awards including, Best Picture, Best Actor (Hugh Jackman) and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway). Shows on Wednesday and Thursday are at 7:00 p.m.

Swan Lake Ballet The fifth production in the Arts Council's Magnificent Seven season takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Lakes District Second-

ary School (LDSS) Multi-Purpose Room (MPR).

Ballet Jorgen Canada presents Swan Lake, one of the world's most popular ballets. Ballet Jorgen's production is on a seven province, 33 city coast-to-coast tour across Canada. This is a fully staged production, with sets, costumes, props and magnificent dancing.

The play’s artistic director Bengt Jorgen said, “We have increasingly moved to not only recreate our classics in a way that is respectful of tradition, but also in a way that is engaging for our modern audience. We’ve really shifted towards trying to speak about Canada and reflect Canadian identity in our work. This version of Swan Lake will be set in and around the Fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, and so people in our audiences will see Canadian heritage intrinsically reflected in the piece.”

Tickets are still available at Process 4 Circle Arts Gallery (250-6923434). Tickets are selling fast, so sales at the door may be limited. The LDSS doors will open at 6:45 p.m.

We expect the MPR doors to open at 7:00 p.m. The performance will start at 7:30 p.m. sharp, and latecomers may not be seated until an appropriate time in the production. Plan to give yourself plenty of time to park and to get into the high school, and into the MPR. A full house is expected.

Cook together ■ If you ask any adult about some of their favourite memories of childhood, you will invariably hear something related to food. Whether it’s baking with Grandma or grilling hamburgers for a cookout with Dad, cooking is always an important part of growing up.

Oracle has just released another critical update for its Java software suite, and this one over two weeks ahead of schedule.

The rush to release the new update appears to be a response to several vulnerabilities in the software that are being actively exploited. In total the patch will resolve 50 security vulnerabilities, of which 44 are web browser plugins threats which could potentially allow someone to remotely access or control your computer without your permission. To prevent this sort of attack, be sure to update your version of Java as soon as possible. This can be done by going to www.java.com, clicking on the Free Java Download button, and following along with the instructions.

Elvina Gertrude Peterson passed away on January 30, 2013 at Kelowna General Hospital after a short battle and complications with pneumonia, at the age of 79. Elvina is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her husband and soul mate, Serge Stefanovic. Predeceased by first husband Charles Floyd (Tiny) Peterson in 1989, she also leaves her indelible mark on 5 loving sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mourning her loss are eldest son Dwight (Karen) of Boston Bar; son Kevin in Peachland; son Kelly (Helen) from Burns Lake; son Dee (Karen) in Dawson Creek and son Lyndon (Fanny) from Prince George. Grandchildren Jacob, Trevor, Anita, Kalen, Charles, Timothy, Taylor and Turner will remember grandma fondly in their memories.

Great grandchildren Lucas, Nyah, Chelsea, Cameron, Ashley and Max will learn of great grandma through memories shared by those who knew her.

Strict marine safety standards will ensure we respect our neighbours above, around and below us.

Although tankers have been safely navigating the north coast and its channels for decades, marine safety remains a top priority for British Columbians. We have been planning the Northern Gateway Project for over a decade, with a particular focus on protecting the environment. We have added specific safety requirements to our marine operations plan to help make the waters of the north coast safer not just for tankers serving the project, but for all marine vessels.

Tankers will reduce speeds in the channels…

Qualified BC Coast Pilots will board and guide all tankers… To prevent spills, all tankers serving the project will be modern and double-hulled, and will be vetted by independent, third party agencies before entering Canadian waters.

Once strict safety and environmental standards are met, they will be guided through the Douglas and Principe Channels by qualified BC Coast Pilots.

Tankers travel slowly, but to make sure that marine species and their habitats are respected, tankers will be required to reduce speed as they pass through certain sections of the channels. Even their escort tugboats will have quieter engines to reduce underwater noise.

Powerful tugboats will escort tankers…

Additional radar and navigational aids will improve safety for all vessels…

Tugboats have been shown to significantly reduce tanker incidents worldwide. Powerful tugboats that have been specially commissioned for Northern Gateway will assist in the safe arrival and departure of tankers.

All tankers will be attended by a close escort tug. In the channels, laden tankers will have two tugs–one tethered at all times. These tugboats will have emergency response equipment on board and will be capable of assisting any marine vessel.
