It was early Saturday morning, and the Abbotsford Police’s patrol division had just begun the day shift. Two officers in separate cars were driving in the 2000 block of Clearbrook Road near Highway 1 when they spotted a suspiciouslooking man. He was standing in a parking lot beside two medium-sized duffle bags, and he didn’t appear to be connected to any vehicle. The man looked nervous, and kept picking up the bags and putting them down. The officers pulled over and asked the man a few questions, but he didn’t give any clear answers about what he was doing there and what was in the padlocked bags. A search of the bags led to the Abbotsford Police

Department’s (APD) largest bust of its kind. Within the two bags was a total 60 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of

between $1.2 to $1.8 million, according to APD spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald. The 24-year-old man was arrested, and police have

recommended a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking. He cannot be named until charges are formally laid. MacDonald said the man does not live in Abbotsford but in another Fraser Valley community which he would not name. The suspect is not known to police for gang or drug activity, and police are now trying to piece together which gang or organized crime group is involved and the destination of the coke. Police believe he was waiting for a ride and, because of his proximity to the freeway, may have been headed out of the community. The second largest cocaine bust in Abbotsford’s history was 40 kilograms, found in a berry field in the area of Mt. Lehman Road and Zero Avenue in 2009. Two men were arrested nearby.

A new trial has been ordered for one of the two men convicted of murdering 14-year-old Chelsey Acorn of Abbotsford in 2005. Dustin Blue Robert Moir, 27, has won his application for an appeal, with the three-judge panel in agreement that a new trial should be granted. The ruling, made Wednesday in the B.C. Court of Appeal, comes just nine days after Moir’s father, Jesse Blue West, 60, was convicted of firstdegree murder in relation to Chelsey’s death. naked, and an autopsy determined that her skull had been crushed with a large rock sometime in the fall of 2005. West, a former long-haul trucker from Surrey, and Moir, from Mission, were charged with her murder in 2007. Both went on trial in November 2009, but West’s proceedings were severed from Moir’s two months later. Most of the Crown’s case in both trials was based on evidence gathered in separate “Mr. Big” operations in which undercover police officers posed as members of a criminal organization. West and Moir were each videotaped confessing to the “boss,” but both testified at their trials that they had lied to win favour with the crime ring. Moir testified that his father strangled Chelsey, and his only involvement was in helping to bury her body.

Council approved the request and amended the city’s sign bylaw to include a new section outlining rules for non-profit charitable organizations to display signs. Auto theft plummets in city

Figures released by ICBC show there were 86 per cent fewer thefts of vehicles in Abbotsford in 2012 compared to 2003, when the provincial bait car program was introduced. The figures also indicate there were 85 per cent fewer breakins of cars in that same period. In 2012, there were

42 per cent fewer vehicle thefts and 24 per cent fewer break-ins compared to 2011. ICBC released the figures last week as part of Auto Crime Enforcement Month. Provincially, auto theft dropped 73 per cent from 2003 to 2021. Bait cars are used by police to capture car thieves. After a bait

car is stolen, the location, speed and direction is monitored by dispatchers through GPS tracking. Everything that takes place inside the bait car is caught on audio and video. The car’s engine can be disabled at the click of a mouse, allowing police to move in and arrest the suspect.

Cannon bylaw worth support

Abbotsford council is entering the “war zone” of berry cannon controversy. A draft municipal bylaw has been created by a farm bylaw committee – a group of city councillors, farm representatives and members of the public. The legislation would put significant new restrictions on the cannons, which are currently regulated by the ministry of agriculture. Blueberry farmers use the cannons to scare birds away from their crops. Emitting loud blasts, which can be in the range of 100 decibels or higher, and potentially firing in excess of 100 times per hour, with multiple shots, the devices are considered extremely invasive by many people who live nearby. Residential development has been allowed to expand up to agricultural land in this city, and others. Meanwhile, the issue has dramatically increased in profile in recent years, as many farms have switched from other crops to the lucrative blueberry. Once quiet residential neighourhoods

are now inundated with cannon blasts for the duration of the growing season, which can stretch over three months or more. While an entire ban on the devices would end the problem, it’s unlikely the provincial government would agree to that at this time. That makes this draft bylaw an important tool for this city’s councillors to find some middle ground between berry growers and frustrated residents. As it now reads, the legislation would stipulate that the devices do not exceed 60 decibels, and face away from neighbouring homes. Use would be prohibited on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and statutory holidays. Little doubt some farmers will oppose any further restrictions, particularly those who rely entirely on cannons to protect their crops, rather than other available alternatives such as nets and reflectors. Nevertheless, this draft bylaw suggests reasonable measures. All that’s required now is a courageous council to support it.

Border crossings are up so much we just hit a 15-year high in the number who sally south of the line to get gas, groceries and other perceived bargains. Close to 14 million people on the Lower Mainland lined up at the four crossings serving our area to spend their dollars and ultimately deny our economy a substantial cash-flow – money that keeps people employed on this side of the border, money that in taxes helps support our social network which includes health care and education, money that might, should local merchants see it, actually end up lowering prices here. To make things easier, the pro-

vincial government has erected big reader signs on the freeway and near crossings indicating wait times to cross –and many times I see 20 or 30 or even 60 minutes of idle time on those signs. If it takes that long to go through U.S. customs, it must take equal minutes to get back home. So how much is your time worth? Figure on a busy day, two hours to negotiate the back and forth across the border, at least an hour’s driving time, probably $20 in fuel, to save $50 on a $300 grocery buy in B.C. Lest you think I’m above reproach, I must confess that until the turn of the new millennium, I frequently killed an afternoon shopping for fishing, hunting and camping gear in Bellingham and environs. They had cool stuff you couldn’t get here, at very reasonable prices. Also, back in the ’80s when I had a truck that got nine miles to the gallon, empty or loaded, city or highway, I did occasionally buy fuel across the line. But never did I buy groceries, or big box items. It was too much hassle to deal with duty

that would often result in a bargain “gone south.” Recently, however, the federal government provided a bonus to crossborder shoppers, greatly increasing the duty-free limits. Of course, you have to spend a few more days, and

And that again brings up the question: how much is your time worth? Convenience and similar quality keeps me and my money on this side of the line, and I can’t justify wasting hours to theoretically save a couple of bucks. I won’t argue against people trying

to hedge their budgets, and if you combine the “savings” with a family outing, then perhaps it makes sense. But that “sense and savings” comes at a cost to where you live. Because, for every loonie spent outside our country everything will continue to get more expensive here, thanks to the demands we make on our government to maintain the quality of life we are accustomed to. We want to be paid more, we demand faster (and free) health care, and we want a protected environment. Much of that comes from retail cash flow and taxes to our government. None of it comes from an American merchant or the U.S. government. Admittedly, on one of my only two trips south since 9/11, I did buy a puppy from Oregon and I’ve also purchased online a couple of unavailable-up-here products. Is it my place to tell you not to shop for presumed savings in the U.S.? No, but you might pause to wonder why there are often vehicles with Washington State plates in the Costco parking lot in Abbotsford. markrushton@abbynews.com

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has been ordered to turn over records related to allegations that a former RCMP officer and hockey coach sexually abused a teen boy in the 1980s. The APD conducted an investigation on the matter between 2004 and 2009. At the time of the allegations, Donald Cooke was the coach of the Abbotsford midget league hockey team on which the alleged victim, now in his 40s, played. No criminal charges were laid. The complain-

ant was seeking the police records, through the Supreme Court of Canada, as part of a civil suit against Cooke. Also arguing for their release was the Abbotsford Hockey Association, which has been named as a defendant in the civil suit. The association said it needs the documents, which contain information about other people who allege they were sexually assaulted by Cooke, for its defence. Cooke argued that the records should be withheld because they contain “irrelevant and embarrassing infor-

The judge ruled that the records be released because they likely contain “very relevant information for one or more of the parties.” Further, the plaintiff has already given detailed onthe-record statements, and would not likely be able to adapt his evidence based on what was in the documents, the judge stated. Cooke was investigated by police after four B.C. men alleged that he sexually assaulted them at the time they were playing

minor hockey in the 1980s. Crown counsel concluded there was not enough evidence to charge Cooke. In his statement of claim in the civil suit, Cooke said false allegations of sexual abuse were made by four people whom he kicked off the hockey team because they were in possession of stolen equipment. Cooke filed his own lawsuit in Ontario in 2010 against the RCMP, claiming mistreatment by the force over the allegations and the investigation. He is seeking $13.5 million in compensation.

Yamasaki has published numerous articles and several books, including Remember Lot’s Wife and Other Unnamed Women of the Bible (FaithQuest) and Making Disciples: A Manual for Baptism and Church Membership (Faith & Life Press). She has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of British Columbia, and a master’s degree in Christian studies from Regent College in Vancouver. She has taught college-level courses in Bible a n d English, adult enrichment c o u r s e s yamasaki on prayer and journalling, and seminars and retreats on Christian living. A third-generation Canadian of Chinese descent, Yamasaki was born and raised in Vancouver and lives in Abbotsford with her husband Gary, who teaches biblical studies at Columbia Bible College. Yamasaki will sign copies of her book on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at House of James, 2743 Emerson St. in Abbotsford.

Youth worker Ruth Neveu, the aboriginal youth services worker at Abbotsford’s Robert Bateman Secondary, is the architect of the new Equestrian Program officially launched this week. The program, initially for aboriginal students, is a first for the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland. Eleven students from Grade 9 to 12 are currently enrolled in the independent-study course, and plans are underway to introduce a full equestrian curriculum this September. Neveu has been around horses her whole life – her dad taught the RCMP Musical Ride – and she wanted to share that experience with young people. About two years ago, she was helping out a barn in Abbotsford, and she thought it would be a great place to take some of the students from the school. She saw how the interaction with the animals helped to boost the kids’ confidence. Most of them had never been near horses before, and they developed interpersonal, teamwork and goal-setting skills as they learned how to care for and ride the animals. Neveu approached, among others, Perry Smith, district principal of aboriginal education, with the idea of creating a full semester program. Smith loved the idea. “We saw it as a great opportunity for aboriginal students to build healthy selfesteem … and build a sense of mastery – that they can be successful at something.” Some programming was offered last summer, and the program began in September. Students visit the barns twice a week, and they are matched with the horse of their selection.

Van Dongen: ‘Disappointed’ Abby MLA accepts lost bid for BC Rail bills

Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen said he is disappointed, but understands why B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman dismissed a petition for information related to the case of two ministerial assistants convicted for their role in the sale of BC Rail operations in 2002. Auditor General John Doyle made a bid for detailed defence lawyer billings in the case, but Bauman found that Doyle was seeking a “sweeping invasion of solicitor-client privilege” in the case and dismissed his petition to see the documents. Van Dongen had been granted intervenor status in the case. He said he could “provide insight and analysis” on some of the issues raised in the lawsuit, due to his “extensive experience” as an MLA and former government minister. Doyle went to court in an effort to complete his review of the BC Rail sale, in which Dave Basi and Bobby Virk pleaded guilty to breach of trust and accepting a benefit for their role in bidding for BC Rail assets. Van Dongen said he was pleased to be a part of the process as an intervenor and respects the decision. “I learned much throughout the court process and gained significant new knowledge about the issues.”

Seven years of pretrial manoeuvring came to a sudden end in October 2010, when Basi and Virk pleaded guilty to providing bid information to a Colorado-based railway company, in exchange for a trip to Denver for a football game and other rewards. The B.C. govern-

ment’s decision to abandon efforts to recover $6 million in legal fees for the pair sparked a political battle. The court documents state that van Dongen has been seeking answers from the government since he first learned the legal fees had been waived.

“The applicant was deeply troubled by the government’s decision to ignore calls for a public inquiry into the Basi-Virk legal fees indemnity waivers,” the documents state. In a statement issued after he filed the notice, van Dongen said full disclosure by the government is crucial.

you can do. One may have been a highly skilled person “back home.” However, you need to demonstrate your skills and wait till someone recognizes that he or she needs a person of your skills. Getting a job is not easy here. If you are not getting a job of the same level, try lower. There are several immigrant support organizations in B.C. It is my considered opinion that one should join a program like Skills Connect in the early part of the journey in Canada. These programs open windows for a new immigrant. One needs to be supported and advised of informational interviews and their values, networking and what it can do for a new immigrant in terms of human capital, alternative careers, goal-setting, where to volunteer, and internships in connected field, etc. Then there are mentors one could connect with. They can suggest where one can find people who are willing to give time. On the side, one must keep oneself very busy. And lastly, one must keep humour and jest in the new life intact, because this journey is stressful. The key to success is to not give up against all odds. The learned in the immigrant support organizations do say that a new immigrant settles down comfortably in Canada only after 24 months. I would say the struggle subsides at 24 months, but the journey continues. Consider life to have just begun. Now a resident of Abbotsford, Ajit Sinha has specialized in human resources. Four heavyweight battles this season between Canada’s top two women’s college volleyball teams has settled absolutely nothing. But wow, has it ever been fun to watch. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, No. 1 in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings, hosted the No. 2-ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners on the weekend, and split the two-game set. The Mariners won Friday’s opener in four sets (25-21, 2519, 18-25, 25-20) at the Envision Athletic Centre, but the Cascades came roaring back for a wildly entertaining five-set triumph (25-23, 2515, 16-25, 19-25, 1511) on Saturday afternoon. The two teams had split a pair of games in Nanaimo back in November, and it’s not hard to envision them adding a couple more chapters to their rivalry at the

provincial and national championships. “We’re one and two in the country right now for a reason, and there’s not much between us except an early mishap by them at the start of the season,” UFV coach Dennis Bokenfohr noted afterward, alluding to VIU’s loss to another Abbotsford squad, the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, in October. “We’re well aware that they’re a very strong team. It’s

Pondering his team’s performance during a three-games-in-threenights road jaunt last week, Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward expounded on his philosophy of motivation. “I always believe that patting you on the back is the best way to motivate,” he said, a smile beginning to form at the corners of his mouth. “But with me at times, the pats go a little lower on the back and sometimes they get a little firmer, that’s all. It’s still a pat on the back.” Ward delivered one of those lower-back pats – some might call them spanks – to his team on Friday morning in the aftermath of a 4-1 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on Thursday. The Heat were outshot 34-17 in the game – their first following the AHL’s all-star break – and while they were tied 1-1 heading into the third period, the Monsters pulled away in the final frame. “At the end of the day, we didn’t put in the work in at all,” Ward said. “It was uncharacteristic of how we play.” Ward’s charges bounced back in a big way on Friday, blasting the Monsters by that same 4-1 score. The Heat put together another solid performance on Saturday, outshooting the Grand Rapids Griffins 32-23, but the Detroit Red Wings affiliate blanked them 1-0. Goalie Petr Mrazek posted the shutout, while Adam Almquist scored the lone goal of the game. “We had really good structure, played really hard, did some nice things,” said Ward, while noting that too many of his team’s shots came from the perimeter. “But you’ve got to give them (the Griffins) credit defensively. I thought they did a nice job.” The Heat return home for four games at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre this week – Tuesday (10:30 a.m.) and Wednesday (7 p.m.) vs. the Rochester Americans, and Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (4 p.m.) vs. Lake Erie. Tuesday’s contest is the team’s second annual school day game – a partnership with School District 34 and Fraser Valley Distance Education which will see thousands of students bused to the rink. The team is providing students with workbooks to reinforce school district curriculum and engage them in learning activities throughout the game.

UFV hoopsters find Heat are no pushovers For a first-year Canada West program, the UBCOkanagan Heat posed an awfully stiff test for the University of the Fraser Valley’s nationally ranked basketball teams on the weekend in Kelowna. The No. 4-ranked Cascades women managed a pair of victories over upstart UBC-O, and both were hard-earned. UFV held a slender three-point lead at the half on Friday, but pulled away after the break for a 73-58 win behind 18 points from Nicole Wierks. Saturday was an even bigger struggle for the Cascades – they trailed by 15 points after the first quarter and by seven at the half. They dug deep and rallied, though, winning 69-62 with Kayli Sartori setting the pace offensively with 20 points. Head coach Al Tuchscherer called it a “character win” for his charges, who lead the Pacific Division at 15-3. “Although I didn’t like our start, I really like the poise we had in coming back,” he stated in a press release. “UBCOkanagan shot the ball incredibly well this weekend. Really impressed with the energy and fight they brought to the game.” The UFV men, ranked No. 9 in the nation, had to rally for an 85-80 overtime victory on Friday, and they struggled

Avalanche call for Abby’s Van der Gulik David Van der Gulik is back in the NHL. The 29-year-old forward from Abbotsford was recalled by the Colorado Avalanche last Friday, and suited up for Saturday's 3-1 home win over the Edmonton Oilers. Van der Gulik was summoned after Avalanche star Gabriel Landeskog, the NHL's reigning rookie of the year, was placed on injured reserve. A former member of the Abbotsford Heat during their inaugural 2009-10 campaign, Van der Gulik accrued 25 of his 38 games of NHL experience last season with the Avalanche. He posted one goal and five assists, along with a plus-3 rating, during that stint. Prior to his recent recall, Van der Gulik registered 12 goals and 13 assists with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters this season.

BROOKS, Kathleen Eleanor April 1, 1930 January 23, 2013

Kathy Brooks (née Gubbins) of Cultus Lake passed away at The Cascades Hospice in Chilliwack, BC, in the early hours of Wednesday, January 23rd.

DOERKSEN Hertha Hertha Doerksen (nee Klassen) passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the age of 93. She was born in Rosenthal, Russia on April 15, 1919 to Heinrich and Katharina Klassen. She is lovingly remembered by her children Dave, (Marilyn), Les (Clara), John (Trish), daughter-in-law Edith and their families. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Jacob, her son Robert, daughter-in-law Rose, granddaughter Brandi and sister Hilda. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. She will be deeply missed and remembered by her sister Patricia Hanson, her daughter Julie and grand-daughter Esmé, her daughter Jennifer, her son Joe and his wife Nancy, for whom she was a most beloved mother-in-law. She also leaves behind her niece Kathy, and nephews Karl and Jim, as well as many cherished friends. Kathy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and moved in her late teens with her family to Vancouver. Years later, she would settle in the Fraser Valley, finding her special place at Cultus Lake. She spent eighteen years as a teacherlibrarian at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School before retiring to enjoy writing, quilting, and other social activities through Probus and the Elder College. Kathy loved music and animals. Her piano lessons and the cats she rescued were an integral part of her life. She thoroughly enjoyed contributing to her community at Cultus, sharing her love of birds, nature, and especially the Lake, with her neighbours. Her free-spirited enthusiasm for life was a treasure to those who knew her and will be greatly missed. A celebration of Kathy’s life will take place at her home on the weekend of her 83rd birthday, March 31st at 1:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. If desired, a donation can be made to Mom’s favourite charity, the SPCA. Her children would like to express their very sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff and volunteers of Cascades who eased the last weeks of Kathy’s life with their support and respect. Doris Amelia Love Harding (nee Carter) gracefully passed away at the Amherst Private Hospital on January 27, 2013 at the age of 91. She was born on April 10, 1921 in Port Arthur, ON. Her working life included being a bank teller at the Bank of Montreal where she met many lifelong friends. After moving to Abbotsford, she settled into the life of a homemaker, but was also continually involved with charity organizations like the Stroke Club at the local hospital, which she ran for many years. Anne Bell (nee Friesen) (January 4, 1927 - January 29, 2013) We will miss our dearly loved Anne, survived by her husband John Gordon, daughters Cindy van der Eijk, and Carol Bell, and sons-in-law, Otto van der Eijk, and Karol Roseman. Anne was treasured by her siblings and their spouses, as well as all of her nieces and nephews. Anne was born to John and Elizabeth Friesen in Blumenfeld, Manitoba. Later on the family moved to Abbotsford, B.C. Anne quit school when she was 13 years old, due to her Mom’s poor health, to help look after her 10 younger siblings. Anne had always wanted to become a nurse, and at age 23, she completed her high school diploma, and was accepted into the Nursing Program at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. After graduation from Nursing School, Anne worked for a year at Kelowna General Hospital. Then she decided to move east to London, Ontario, to take a Psychiatric Nursing Course. While in London, Anne met her husband, Gordon, and they were married at South Abbotsford Church in May 1959. They settled in London, Ontario where they had two daughters; Cynthia Heather, and Carol Anne. Anne worked at Victoria Hospital for 26 years, mostly as a Clinical Nursing Supervisor. Anne also served in many different capacities at Wortley Baptist Church. Anne and Gordon both retired in 1985, and moved out to Abbotsford, B.C. During Anne’s retirement, she was very involved serving in both community, and church activities at South Abbotsford Church. Both Anne and Gordon loved to entertain, so were always having family and friends over for meals in their home. Anne was an exceptionally good cook and baker, and loved both activities. She always put others ahead of herself, and was generous with her time and energy. Anne loved to serve others, and to give gifts. She was extremely thoughtful and caring to her family and friends. Anne loved poetry, music, flowers, and the great outdoors. Anne and Gordon travelled extensively, which they loved. Anne’s family is comforted by the knowledge that she is now rejoicing in heaven with her Lord and Saviour. A private memorial service was held at South Abbotsford Church on Huntington Road, on Monday, February 4 at 12:00 p.m. You are invited to leave a fond memory or message of condolence at the Family’s on-line guest book at www.myalternatives.ca
