Police looking for senior citizen mugger On January 28th shortly before 6 p.m.

Cranbrook RCMP officers responded to a fight in progress in the

neighbourhood of 4th Street North and 17th Avenue. Upon arriving the police determined that the fight turned

out to be a 74 year old man being assaulted by a male suspected to be in his 30’s. The assailant fled on foot before police arrived.

The RCMP has determined that the victim had been walking along 4th Street North

headed towards Victoria Avenue. The victim noted the suspect behind him walking at a faster pace. The suspect caught up to the victim and introduced himself as Gordon or a similar name. The assailant then punched

the victim in the face and continued to punch and kick him in the head and face. The assailant threatened to throw the victim into nearby Joseph Creek.

During the assault, three vehicles drove by

with the victim trying to flag the drivers down for help but they didn’t stop. While being assaulted, the victim was successful in getting the attention of a home owner who phoned police. The victim was

dragged away from a nearby house where the assailant rifled through his pockets in an attempt to rob him of his possessions.

injuries to his facial area and body as a result of the attack. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male approximately 6 ft tall with short brown hair, slim but muscular build and brown short hair.

The assailant was unshaven (had stubble), and was wearing a black jacket and possibly a ball cap.

The police are asking for public’s help in solving this cowardly attack and ask for anyone who may have witnesses this assault

Assaulted driver hits vehicles to escape On January 30th at 12:30 a.m., Cranbrook RCMP were called to a parking lot in the 2200 block of 3rd Street South where a brown Dodge van with a ladder on top, was seen to collide with multiple vehicles in that lot then drive away.

The police located the driver who reported to police that he was being assaulted by two stocky males who flagged him over then repeatedly punched him. The driver of the van escaped the assault by driving his van away while being assaulted and collided with other vehicles in the parking lot, while attempting to escape.

The victim suffered minor injuries and was not

hospitalized.

One attacker was described as a Caucasian male, 36-38 years old; husky or stocky build; short dark brown hair.

The second attacker was only described as being a Caucasian male with a similar hair style as the first attacker. The police are looking for anyone who saw this incident or may have information.

Wolfe Creek line reloCation ProjeCt CommenCement BC Hydro will be making system improvements and re-locating the power line in the Wasa—Wolfe Creek area to improve reliability for customers along Wolfe Creek Road.

Work will begin March 2013 and is expected to be completed by November 2013. The project will include vegetation clearing work, followed by construction activities and the use of heavy equipment, which could result in higher than normal traffic activity in the area.

Women’s Resource Centre to benefit from the Vagina Monologues Submitted Cranbrook’s V-Day celebration comes to Key City Theatre just in time for Valentine’s weekend, Friday, February 15, 2013. The show starts at 8 p.m. and there will be live music in the lobby starting at 7 p.m.

The ladies on stage will bring the house down with passion, purpose and the powerful words of Eve

Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues.

Tanya Laing Gahr is once again taking on directorial duties of the play. She’s bringing in a cast of more than 15 women representing diverse backgrounds and experiences.

“You’ll walk out of this event feeling energized,” Laing Gahr said. “The excitement, the performers and the message are going to combine into an eve-

ning that inspires, provokes and entertains.”

The performance will be the second that Laing Gahr and producer Susan Hanson have done as a fundraiser for the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre. Their production last year raised nearly $8,000 for the centre, which has been serving women in Cranbrook for 41 years.

Centre helps hundreds of women—and their children—every year,” Laing Gahr said. “Our theatre company, Drama Queens, has chosen to support the resource centre because we believe in the work it does—and we believe in the women who use it.”

The Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre is one of the last centres of its kind in the province.

Government funding

cuts have led to centres shutting down, and the Cranbrook centre was shut down for several months during 2011.

This year, the overall fundraising goal for the centre is $50,000.

The Friends of the Women’s Centre are working on several projects to raise funds, but The Vagina Monologues has a special place.

“Opera for Heathens” promises a fresh take on opera and classics “Opera for Heathens” is a post-modern operarock cabaret for the 21st Century. Kevin Armstrong is a versatile and unorthodox performer.

He has forged a career in both Canada and Europe, performing everything from traditional

opera and musical theatre, to one-man-shows where he pairs his 4-octave vocal range with his skills as a guitarist.

Kevin performs a wide range of music, from opera arias and musical numbers, to grandiose, vocal-oriented music

by Meat Loaf (in German), Queen, Styx, and others. “Opera for Heathens” is being presented at Centre 64 (64 Deer Park Ave. Kimberley) on Sunday, February 10th. Tickets are $15, and the show will begin at 2 p.m.

Kevin grew up in the richly artistic community of Nelson, British Columbia, where he was exposed to all types of music, visual art and theatre. Kevin started music lessons by age 10, and by college, had already studied classi-

cal, jazz and rock guitar, drums and voice. After completing a Master’s degree in vocal performance at McGill University in Montreal, Kevin moved to Zürich, Switzerland, where he did an apprenticeship at the Zürich Opera house.

Cranbrook CFUW coming initiatives Submitted The Cranbrook Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women is continuing their mission on educating themselves and their surrounding communities on various issues in our society.

As has been in the news for the last week, the BC Liberals have finally hired much needed Nurse Practitioners through BC including the East Kootenay. BC Council of the CFUW to which the Cranbrook Club belongs to, and

At our provincial CFUW BC Council AGM in April 2012, a resolution was passed which asks for a language change in the first step in educating the public, policy makers and agency staff that the use of the term “child pornography” does not reflect the current reality. The CFUW position is that images of this nature are representations of the crime of child sexual abuse, and our view is that “child pornography” should be

replaced with the term “images of child sexual abuse”. Further, referring to words that accurately resonate with its gravity and impact, that is, “images of child sexual abuse”, is important. There is data that indicates that the crimes of child exploitation occur in all communities, and that the Internet is the primary distributor of its evidence.

We recommend this small but meaningful change as a significant step forward in educating the people in BC about this matter. Letters from all BC CFUW clubs have gone to police detachments to

make them aware of our policy and rationale in hopes they will review it and consider supporting it when our Abbotsford Club presents a motion to endorse our policy at the upcoming Association of Chiefs of Police on February 21st, 2013.

CFUW BC Council represents 2000 women graduates, associates and students members in 23 clubs in BC. We place our education and training at the service of our communities, take an interest and participate in public affairs, advocate for human rights and improvements to the status of women and girls.

Discretionary spending Many Canadians are taking a carefree approach to spending, acknowledging in a new poll* commissioned

by Edward Jones that they keep track of fixed expenses, but when it comes to discretionary spending, they aren’t paying as close attention. One in three Canadians only keeps track of fixed expenses, such as mortgage, rent or car payments. A further 32

percent of Canadians do not keep track of their expenses at all.

According to Statistics Canada, Canadian household debt-to-income ratio reached a new high of 164.6 percent in the third quarter of 2012, which means for every $100 in aftertax income, Canadians owe $164.60.

Laurice Pamela Mosley "Ma" 1956 - 2013 Laurie passed away in Kimberley on Thursday, January 24, 2013. She was always a mom first. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a beautiful woman inside and out.

Her smile could light up a room. She was caring and had a heart of gold. She always enjoyed the little things in life and it was the little things that mattered. She loved the outdoors, camping with her grandkids, fishing and 4x4ing with her son. Laurie was born March 25, 1956 in Fernie and was raised there too. She loved the mountains. No matter who was around, she was the boss - and we loved it! She was the best mom, daughter, grandmother and partner we will ever know.

Laurie is survived by her daughter Deeanna Mosley; son Danny Mosley; grandchildren Sean, Alexis, Tyson and Braydon; daughter-in-law Nichole; son-in-law Cory; her partner Billy; sister Heather; brothers Glen and Tommy; brother-in-law John Polacik, sister-in-law Karen; sisterin-law Deb; nieces Jayreen, Shelley, Breanna, Nadine, Amanda, Vieanna, Nobalee; and nephews Troy and Cody.

She was predeceased by her loving parents Walter and Doreen Mosley better known as Papa Jack and NaNa; brothers Timothy and Wesley, sister Maureen and her son Chad Polacik.

A memorial service for Laurie was held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Fernie at 2:00 pm.

Obituaries OBITUARY

Agnes Frances Owen 1918 - 2013 Agnes Frances Owen of Kimberley, B.C. passed away gently on January 30, 2013 at the age of 94. She was born, Agnes Aikman, in 1918, on a farm outside Lacombe, Alberta. She moved to Canmore as a young girl and eventually came with her family to Kimberley in the early 1930’s. Agnes always spoke fondly of this mountain city and genuinely enjoyed the people she came to know in Kimberley. In 1941 she married her favourite dance partner, Art Owen, and saw him embark to war the following year. When Art returned from overseas they started a family and raised two daughters in their home in Townsite. Along with her parents and brothers, she and Art owned and operated Aikman’s Café and Aikman’s Camera Shop for a number of decades before retiring to a life of gardening, grand-parenting and gourmet cooking.

She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and cross country skiing but, most of all, loved spending time with her family.

She leaves her daughters Gerry (Jack) Wessel of Abbotsford and Bonnie (Brian) McKenzie of Kimberley as well as four grandchildren - Peter (Ana), Jana (Marco), Andrea (Jesse) and David (Kate). Four great grandchildren survive her - Finnegan, Anna, Sophie and Matthew. She was also close to the families of her nieces and nephews and shared a special bond with her niece Louise Archibald. Agnes is predeceased by her husband Arthur and grandsons Steven and Ian. Agnes was a gracious, caring, generous person with an infectious laugh and a twinkle in her blue eyes. She was wise and always knew the right thing to say to touch your heart. She was a breath of fresh air to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered here on earth but will be dancing with joy in Heaven.

Agnes’ family wishes to thank the wonderful individuals who make up the staff of the Kimberley Special Care Home for their dedication to the people in their care and for the compassion they show in their day to day tasks.

A memorial service for Agnes will be held on Saturday, February 9th at 3:00 pm at the Kimberley United Church, located at 10 Boundary Street. Reverend Christine Dudley will be officiating.
