Darryl Gagnon awarded scholarship Included in the 320 University of Alberta Augustana Campus students to receive a 2012–2013 scholarship is Darryl Gagnon, of Quesnel, a third year Bachelor of Arts student, who was awarded $500 for hockey, funded by an Augustana Faculty Award in Hockey.

More than $519,000 was provided by the University of Alberta and Augustana Campus in recognition of excellence in academics, fine arts, athletics and leadership.

Support comes from generous donors, investment earnings on endowments and from faculty-funded awards.

Low down on high efficiency woodstoves

This article is the second in a threepart series on how to Burn it Smart, brought to you by the Quesnel Air Quality Roundtable. The first article in this series discussed well seasoned firewood; this article reviews new wood stove technology and the final article will outline proper fireburning techniques. id you know that residential wood burning is a major contributor to poor air quality in Quesnel? Most of us blame industry and automobiles for bad air. The fact is, smoke from residential burning is a major contributor to particulate matter in the air we breathe.

Particulate matter (also known as pollution, PM10, or PM2.5) are tiny particles 200 times smaller than raindrops. Once inhaled, these particles can affect the heart and lungs and cause serious health effects.

There’s an old saying, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire”, but that isn’t true anymore when talking about burning in a high efficiency wood stove. In fact, if wood is well seasoned and burned properly in an EPA certified stove, there should be little to no visible smoke coming out of the chimney.

You can identify a high efficiency appliances because they are certified

as “clean burning” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A label on the appliance will confirm it is EPA certified. There are big differences in efficiency and performance between conventional stoves and the advanced models. On average, advanced stoves are about one-third more efficient and produce about 90 per cent less smoke than conventional stoves.

Using a higher efficiency wood stove saves time, money and has less negative impact on the air we breathe.

In recent years, wood stove technology has made great advances from the classic basement wood furnaces or simple black wood stoves. New wood heating instillations are attractive stoves and advanced technology fireplaces located in the main living areas.

The technological advances include: • New firebox designs: capable of burning the wood more completely, cleanly and at higher efficiencies.

• A new type of door glass can withstand the heat and a technology keeps the glass clear for days at a time, allowing efficient heating to be combined with viewing of the fire.

• Pellet stoves that use compressed wood and other biomass wastes are capable of

providing at least 24 hours of unattended heating.

Reliable installation safety standards provide clear guidelines for safe installation.

Training and professional certification programs for installers and inspectors mean that you can get dependable advice and service.

Currently in the Cariboo, the Wood Stove Exchange Program is running for the sixth year in a row. Cariboo residents are being offered a cash incentive of up to $550 to upgrade their old wood stoves as part of the Cariboo Wood Stove Exchange Program.

There are only 25 rebates in total.

Therefore, it is on a first come, first serve basis that residents who replace older inefficient models with more efficient and clean-burning appliances can receive the cash rebate.

Although the timber supply does not exist to allow the Burns Lake sawmill to be rebuilt without negatively affecting other mills, communities, and jobs on Highway 16, the government has chosen to ignore this reality and appears intent on getting the Burns Lake mill rebuilt at any cost.

“Any cost” includes the commitment to introduce legislation this spring that will enable Cabinet to give Hampton Affiliates, an American company, exclusive rights over specific areas of our public forests in the Lakes Timber Supply Area in a manner that will open the door to the broad-scale privatization of our public forests.

In their dying days, the BC Liberals will introduce enabling legislation that will allow politicians to give forest companies exclusive rights over our public forests without the checks and balances of governing laws or regulations, or the guaranteed scrutiny of a transparent public process.

The Social Credit Party attempted a similar “rollover” of replaceable volume-based licenses to area-based tenures in 1988. The Socred Forests Minister of the day estimated their legislation would put over 60 percent of BC’s public forests under the exclusive control of private companies. The NDP Forest Critic at the time dubbed the legislation “privatization on a massive scale,” and it was squashed by significant public backlash.

Twenty-five years later, our forests are under assault by pests, disease, and fire. As the Auditor General pointed out, we have an appallingly weak forest inventory. And only a few large companies now hold replaceable volumebased timber licenses. Yet with the BC Liberal Party on the verge of losing the May election, they’re going to ram legislation through the BC Legislature that will do what Social Credit could not obtain the social licence to do in 1988.

As last summer’s Timber Supply Committee found out, the social licence still doesn’t exist to support the wholesale rollover of renewable forest licenses to area-based tenures. That’s why the Committee did not recommend this action. Instead, it gave some cautionary provisos to government for consideration “if conversion to more area-based tenures is desirable.”

Warehouse One needs your help DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Warehouse One is proud to, once again, help those in the community.

Between Jan. 27 and Feb. 10, the jean store is accepting pants and offering a discount to those who bring in donations.

If you bring in one pair of pants, Warehouse One is offering a 10 per cent discount. You earn a 15 per cent discount for two pairs and 20 per cent off a purchase for a donation of three or more pants.

In the last eight years, Warehouse One has been able to to donate 71,000 pairs of jeans to shelters across Canada and this year, the bar has been raised.

“In this ninth year of the event, we hope to collect more than 13,500 pairs of jeans,” Warehouse One president, Neil Armstrong, said.

The Quesnel store is aiming to collect 200 pairs and they’re well on their way, with more than 150 already collected.

If you wish to make a donation, but don’t have any gently used jeans laying around, you can still help.

Warehouse One is accepting all types of pants, as long as they are wearable and not too worn, including dress pants and yoga pants.

Don’t feel limited by gender either, Warehouse One is more than happy to take men’s, women’s, kid’s and baby’s pants off your hands.

There are even options for those who aren’t willing to make the trip down to the store.

KSO presents Marie-Josée Lord in A Joyful Noyse, Feb. 9

Soprano soloist Marie-Josée Lord joins the Kamloops Symphony on the Sagebrush Theatre stage for A Joyful Noyse, Feb . 9, 7:30 p.m.

Lord was born in Haiti and adopted by a Canadian couple in rural Québec at the age of six. Early music studies in piano and violin eventually led her to discover her voice and embark on the path that brought her to a professional opera debut as Liù in Opéra de Québec’s Turandot in 2003.

Marie-Josée performs Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights), Op.7, a song cycle by the French composer, Hector Berlioz. It is a setting of six poems by Théophile Gautier about love, desire and longing.

The texts are resplendent with the characteristic imagery of the French lyric of the 1830s. It is romantic poetry of far-off places and climes.

Originally written for voice and piano, the work was later adapted for soprano voice and orchestra, resulting in the version to be performed in February. The title of the song collection is a nod to the French title of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by Berlioz’s beloved Shakespeare.

In addition to the vocal piece,

October, by Eric Whitacre (born Jan. 2, 1970) opens the program.

He composed October with the intention of evoking a peaceful musical representation of the month he has called his favourite, and the feelings this month evokes for him. A distinguished conductor, broadcaster and public speaker, he was described by the Daily Telegraph in London: “Whitacre is that rare thing, a modern composer who is both popular and original.”

The finale is Gounod’s Symphony #1. Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was one of the most brilliant French composers of the 19th century. Gounod had a bent for both music and painting, both of which he inherited from his parents. However, one fateful day, Charles Gounod went with his mother to a performance of Rossini’s Othello, which fomented his passion for music and consequently tempted him into choosing music over painting. The entire gamut of Gounod’s work includes numerous operas, oratorios, symphonies as well as several chamber music compositions.

What’s My Retirement “Number”?

There’s been a lot of talk lately about how everyone needs to hit a certain “number” before they can retire comfortably — a number that is, frankly, intimidating to many Canadians. Is it true?

First of all, your so-called “number” or retirement savings threshold won’t come from a simple formula. Contrary to what some may think, the same number doesn’t apply to everyone and will likely change as our lives evolve. Also, we all have different lifestyle goals for our retirement years.

Advocates of the “number” often refer to a 2010 C.D. Howe study that suggested most Canadians who want to retire at age 65 and replace 70% of their working incomes, must save 10%-21% of pre-tax earnings every year for 35 years. That can be a daunting goal for many people who find it challenging to save even 10% of their paycheque each year.

As others have since pointed out, a 70% income replacement goal is a “gold standard” and many can be quite comfortable having 50%-60% of their income in retirement.

That said, smart savings and investment choices today are critical to ensuring you have access to a secure post-retirement income. It is also true the longer you delay saving for retirement, the more money you will need to set aside in later years. So, how do you take the first step toward figuring out what your retirement savings goal should be?

Working with an advisor can help. Rather than worry about achieving a single large number, an advisor will take a structured approach to figuring out what you need to be comfortable at various points in your life. His or her questions will range from “How will I generate income in retirement?” to “How will inflation and taxes affect my lifestyle?”

To figure out what you need to save now, an advisor will help create a customized plan to reduce your risk for the years to come. For many, the simplest step is to open an RRSP or TFSA, and apply a structured approach saving a little each month.

Your advisor should also help educate you on managing money after or as you near retirement. Idle No More gaining ground

T

he Idle No More movement continues to pick up steam.

But is all of the drumming and chanting doing any good?

A Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll done earlier this month found that only four in 10 Canadians is sympathetic to the goals of Idle No More. But the same poll found that fewer than four in 10 Canadians were familiar with the aims of the movement.

To us, that’s a big disconnect and a sign that supporters aren’t piquing the average citizen’s interest with demonstrations. That doesn’t mean we don’t have plenty of work to do to resolve systemic problems in the relationship between First Nations and government. Getting key players on both sides to sit down and talk about those issues is a good start.

Assembly of First Nations national chief Shawn Atleo, who met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Jan. 11, says his organization will pressure the feds to continue working toward improving that relationship.

Atleo and Harper met a year ago in what the prime minister’s office called “a historic meeting.”

No doubt, work has since been done to clarify goals around governance, access to education, community self-sufficiency and other areas.

Idle No More emerged, nonetheless, which makes one question whether Harper and company were paying lip service to First Nations last January.

Despite the seeming disconnect with the majority of Canadians, the grassroots protest movement has restoked the fire in First Nations and is slowly getting non-aboriginals to pay more attention to grassroots aboriginal issues.

But progress won’t come through noisy demonstrations. It’ll be achieved through First Nations leaders working together with government using a focused, unified, businesslike approach.

What’s that awful smell?

M

y son’s room has an odd odour. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s clean – which is rare – or a pigsty, which is common. Whatever state I find it in, the unpleasant stench remains.

Strangely enough, I’m the only one who seems to notice. When I open his door I’m immediately assaulted by the stink, but whenever I ask about it, no one else has a clue what I’m referring to.

“I don’t smell anything,” my 12-year-old son will say as he takes a whiff while playing video games with his friends.

“Yeah,” his pals will agree, looking at me with concerned expressions as though I’m a confused old lady.

“We don’t either.”

Even my husband barely notices it and will say it’s so subtle that it’s nothing. Yet for me and my keen sense of smell, it’s not nothing, and although I can’t pinpoint what it is exactly,

On A Brighter Note I find it offensive. It’s like a weird mixture of stale air, sweaty socks and mouldy something or other.

I’ve tried sniffing it out, tearing his room apart, sweeping everything from under his bed and cleaning out his closets. But even after I’ve changed his sheets, washed his floor, thrown out his garbage, opened the windows and put my eager nostrils to everything I can find, I’m still left wondering what it is.

His backpack, thankfully, is far more obvious. Last week I opened it and the reek was overwhelming.

“What in the world?”

I asked as I pulled out

couple months, I decided to check out the lost and found at Sam’s school. It was like a store in there.

Unclaimed shoes, jeans, shorts, t-shirts, sweaters, hats, gloves, hoodies, coats and bags filled several large bins.

As I went through the huge piles, I wondered if other parents knew about this crazy corner of the school where lovely presents go to die.

If their kids are anything like mine, maybe they’ll luck out and recover some of their valuable items in there.

I, unfortunately, did not.

I’m still on the hunt for his misplaced jacket and hoodies.

The true mystery that I’d like to solve, though, is the culprit behind the nasty smell in his bedroom.

“What else is in here?”

Dumping the contents of the bag on the floor I also discovered a punctured orange, another bruised apple, an open tube of yogurt and a stack of wet homework that had disintegrated into pieces.

Revolted, I looked at him like I’d found a dead body.

“This is a brand new backpack,” I scolded “This is exactly how the last one got ruined.”

Apologizing and promising to put his leftover lunch in the fridge in the future, he meant well, but I knew this would happen again.

It’s not that he’s a bad kid, he’s actually a terrific one – he just can’t seem to remember to take care of his stuff. Apparently it’s not all that uncommon amongst his peers.

WF silent auction a huge success West Fraser’s annual silent auction has become a much anticipated event in the West Fraser main Quesnel office over the past 19 years. All items are donated either by employees, contractors, customers or local businesses.

This year (2012), the silent auction raised $17,084.89. All money raised has been donated to Good Cheer.

s I grow older and older the list of things I can not do is getting longer.

One of the things on that list is pole vaulting. Just the thought is rattling my bones. When I was a kid we went pole vaulting over ditches and small canals and looking for pike along the ditch lines. The poles we used were willows that grew in very wet places and were between 15 and 20 feet long. The only thing we had to look out for were bulls in the meadows. Catching a pike was pretty tricky and took a lot of patience.

We caught pike with a very thin looped wire that we let down very slow in the water and slower yet towards the pike. As a rule, pike sit very still

The trick is to get the loop just at the beginning of the pike’s head and than yank the loop closed as fast as you can and swing the fish away from the ditch; even then the loop will most likely be halfway down the pike’s body.

Olympic pole vaulting is something else; these people launch themselves

20 feet in the air and land on three feet of foam with out their pole.

Heck, if we lost our pole we were very wet and muddy when we got home. The reason being the pole getting stuck in the middle of the ditch and slowly sinking deeper. The end result was having to let go of the pole and swim across.

Coming home without a fish, soaking wet, muddy and without a pole was a miserable experience because one had to find another pole and there was no welcoming committee when standing at the door wet and muddy.

Life has changed since I was a child, but change has happened since the beginning of this earth. The changes

affecting humans were not as fast or abrupt as the changes after the industrial revolution, but there never was a time without change. It is the increasing speed with which change occurs that makes me wonder if we are mentally capable of adapting to these rapid technological changes. In my observation, children and adults were more physically active and ate healthier, mostly locally grown food up to the late 1950s.

At this point in time, I do not know how or where my food was grown or what additives or poisons were used to grow it. I do know that herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers are leaking into rivers and lakes which makes them unfit

for drinking water and impossible for fish to survive. Obesity was not common 50 years ago, but looking at the amount of adults and children who are obese now; something has gone wrong.

Whether the reason is what we put in our mouths or how much time we spend looking at TV, or are influenced by fast food ads is a question mark to me.

Electronic gadgets take a lot of our time, cell phones ring anytime and anywhere, tunes are played from early morning to night, people are texting everywhere without attention to their surroundings.

Our homes, with all the music and movies we want, have become

places where we isolate ourselves more than ever. I am wondering how anti-social we have to become before our society falls apart. I look at the empty and boring playgrounds and wonder what happened to the inter-action between children and ask myself is technology shaping us, or are we shaping technology?

Personally I am glad I played active games and went pole vaulting with friends; these are still happy memories.

How many happy memories can there be when the answer is I sat on my rear end and played violent electronic games?

Each picture has its own Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Perryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fifth book, two of poetry, a memoir of his childhood hockey days and a book of photographs and words about Barkerville. This one, however, will be his first to rely on the photographs to carry it.

Perryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always had a camera with him, though he started getting serious in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;81, when he opened Perryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Picture Place. The idea for the book Gordon Perry holds up his most famous pic- has been around for ture.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;As far as I knew there had never been one done, a photo book of Quesnel. So, with the encouragement of Chris Harris and a couple others, I got it done,â&#x20AC;? he said.

And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wide array of images and stories that he has captured in his effort to sum up Quesnel in photographs.

A sunset through wildfire smoke, in dramatic black and orange with a pink sun sunk half below the horizon, took him 15 seconds of furious snapping to capture, while a shot of a rainbow over Dunrovin Park Lodge sat in his brain for two years before he managed to capture it.

The range of pictures in Quesnel the Beautiful, from past to present, film to digital or from the dramatic to the mundane, does well in capturing Quesnel The book has already had a small, unintended pre-production run during the Christmas Market.

Perry had printed out some copies to show people so he could take orders for when

the real thing came out.

The book, however, proved popular enough that people wanted to buy the book and send it to loved ones for Christmas.

It has since had an addition of old photos of the arena, along with a new photo of the fundraising efforts for the new arena.

Now, with the book laid out and ready to print, comes Perryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s least favourite part of the process. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s awesome to do it, but then marketing it, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the difficult part,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s currently only selling it directly, though he has ideas for marketing, like a book siging he is trying arrange, to help spread the word about the book.

With Quesnel the Beautiful's final iteration to be released in weeks, Perry already has his mind on his next project: a photography book for the casual, pointand-shoot photographer.

Quesnel the Beautiful, when it comes out within the next few weeks, will retail for $24.95, including taxes.

CHIP program helps people be healthy by choice, not by chance ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

W

ith lifestyle diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol wreaking havoc on today’s population, it’s sometimes difficult to know just how to either avoid or modify these conditions.

One program speaks common sense about these conditions, as well as such killers as heart disease, stroke, certain adult cancers, gall bladder disease and others.

CHIP, Complete Health Improvement Program, is an affordable, lifestyle enrichment program designed to reduce disease risk factors through the adoption of better health habits and appropriate lifestyle modifications.

Delivered locally by Dr. Keith Corbett, CHIP also relies on the expertise of program founder and scientific presenters Dr. Hans Diehl, Dr. Darren Morton, who makes the scientific information practical and Dr. Andrea Avery, who makes the information personal.

Corbett presents the educational program

through live feed programming from the experts via the Internet.

“This way the information is absolutely the most up-to-date,” Corbett said.

In preparation for the program, Corbett is holding two free information sessions to allow people to make up their mind if this is the right program for them.

Participants have a health screen with hospital personnel where lab test results determine risk factor levels.

There are 16, two-hour sessions where participants learn how to reduce the risk factors through diet and lifestyle changes.

“This program is an intensive first month and anybody can do just about anything for 30 days,” Corbett said.

“Especially when it involves perhaps prolonging your life and improving your quality of life. It’s like a lifestyle bootcamp.”

Participants are encouraged to discuss and share their results and work closely with their personal physician regarding their need for medication as they modify their lifestyle.

“I don’t expect people who take this course, will,

in 30 days, make all the changes and sustain those changes,” he said.

“But I do expect and I know it’s attainable for each and every graduate to move in a direction that will improve their health.

“Baby steps are better than no steps and sustained baby steps over a period of time can make an incredible difference.”

Once completed, CHIP graduates are again screened for changes in lifestyle, clinical outcomes and medications.

The CHIP lectures include valuable information from the three experts. Corbett supplements these lectures with interactive heart-healthy recipe demonstrations and samples, question and answer time, power point presentations and lots of fun.

Participants receive a textbook, workbook, notebook, various publications, a pedometer, CHIP tote bag and water bottle.

The CHIP program began with a growing interest in resort-based lifestyle changing centres where change was proven possible. Dr. Diehl investigated a small, but appar-

ently successful, program run by Nathan Pritikin.

Once he analyzed the results of the four-week, residential intervention program, he was convinced to join the Longevity Centre.

Diehl wondered how such a program could be applied in a communitybased approach.

Not only would it be considerably less expensive, but also would be applied directly to participant’s lives, thus improving the success rate.

Diehl’s first four-week, community-based program was successfully delivered in 1986 in Creston, B.C., with more than 400 residents responding.

Many astounding successes were recorded with a majority seeing continued good results after several years.

The CHIP program has been carried out in several communities since, with equally good results.

This program is now offered in more than 350 cities across North America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand and has more than 50,000 graduates worldwide.

Corbett has been deliv-

ering the CHIP program in Quesnel for five years and more than 100 people have participated.

“The program teaches the fundamental information about nutrition, food values and other healthy options,” Corbett said.

“All with the goal to maximize benefits and minimize harmful effects – all with baby steps in mind or giant steps if that is what one wants.

“Everyone is different and we encourage people to exercise their freedom to do as they see fit and best for themselves.”

The program also includes an exercise component and Corbett said fresh air and exercise, coupled with a positive attitude, are important elements for any lifestyle change.

“I recognize that not all people are able to establish an exercise regime but we encourage everyone to do what they can, again baby steps,” he said.

“It’s amazing what the body can do, given a chance.”

Some of the Quesnel participants were jubilant about the program and their results.

“In just four weeks my cholesterol dropped

about 30 per cent, I’ve lost 10 pounds, my blood pressure has returned to normal and my doctor thought the blood work was in error so we had it done twice.

“The CHIP program really works.”

Others reported they had increased energy, weight loss and one even said they weren’t hungry all the time anymore; however, the best result for this participant was they sleep much better at night.

“This program is not a medical cure but a healthy lifestyle based on baby steps,” Corbett emphasized.

“In the program you gain the information you need to learn the ‘why’ about food choices.

“This is a complete lifestyle examination and provides options that work for the participant.”

The next CHIP program is slated for March.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The barking overwhelms everything else. It's like a wind, a constant plucking at your consciousness that drowns out other sensations with it's pervasiveness.

As one dog's bark dies in its throat, two rise to replace it, without any room for quiet in between.

Everything changes as soon as the dogs are let loose. Complete silence descends as the dogs strain at the leads and the sound of the runners on the snow is a whisper you can hear clearly.

Sandy Burke, who took me out for a ride, had a busy year and hasn't had the time to train his dogs or race them. Seeing those dogs out there, running circular troughs in the snow, he decided if he wasn't going to race the dogs, he should find some way for the dogs to pay their way, so he decided to give tours.

During a season of racing, taking sight seekers out

would be detrimental to the dogs' training, they bulk up when towing heavy weights and sleek down when racing; so this year, without the races, turned out to be the perfect opportunity for Burke to introduce people to this ultra-Canadian sport.

Rocketing out of Burke's driveway, we take a right onto the road at speed, the sled itself sweeping wide in a lurid tail slide.

The air is nice for the two of us on the sled, hovering around the zero mark, but to the dogs, who are in constant motion, it's warmer than they like.

The road is wide and fast, until we hit a cul de sac, crest a small berm and dip down into a winding trail through the trees and down a slope.

It's fast through the trees, cutting through the cool, shaded air, and feels all the faster as we slide past trees centimetres away.

The speed, said Burke, is to keep the sled from tracking straight behind the dogs, which would have

us at the back of the train cutting corners, at the apex of which stand trees, which would be disastrous.

It’s a section which Burke will cut at request, so as not to scare anyone.

Once out of the trees, we hit an old, disused road and find a more sedate pace over the sun dappled snow.

The ride, suspensionless as it is, can be bumpy, but the road is smooth and without drama. We slide through endless pines, near black against the superwhite snow, interspersed with small fields of flowing white.

A jaunt over train tracks, over a berm with a quick succession of corners adds a bit of excitement to the ride, before the sled dips back into the kilometres of trails.

Burke rarely calls out to his dogs, they know the route for the most part, but at certain junctions, where he is as likely to go one way as the other when he is off by himself, he yells quick commmands to the dogs so they don't get confused.

Burke hasn't had a lot of time out on the dogsled this season, so the dogs are out of shape, or so he says; their stamina still seems superhuman, though they struggle over some steep hills. He stops the sled after a while, the dogs getting a little tired from hauling their load.

Still, he has to anchor the sled in the snow to stop the dogs from pulling, and once stopped they take up their howls and barks once again, breaking the stillness of the winter air.

Burke stops the dogs a couple times during the trip, though he says as they get fitter they will require fewer rests, or none, depending on the load.

The dogs don't rest long, minutes later Burke pulls up the anchor they have been pulling at and we're off.

Standing on the back of the sled is a different experience from cocooning in the sled. It's more active as the sled sways underfoot

and the bumps threaten like a bucking horse. It's a bit like walking the deck of a ship on a choppy sea, if the deck consisted of small strips of wood with snow running under foot. And when the going gets steep, Burke hops off, hitting the snow running and paces the sled, allowing the dogs a small break from the harsh toil.

Burke, having done this for half his life, is a source of near-endless knowledge about the sport, its history, the events and his dogs.

Burke breeds his own dogs, with regular influxes of new blood from the territories or Alaska. He knows their bloodlines and what their strengths are along with their weaknesses.

All this has been useful over the years, tackling a variety of race lengths at the Caledonia Classic in Ft. St. James, including many podium finishes, along with a race in Wyoming.

The ride lasts for an hour, with endless, gorgeous winter scenery.

Coming back into the driveway after the ride, the dogs still have energy to run, which turns into baying one again, but they calm down when Burke pours a 'soup' (a meat broth with bones and chunks of meat) in the snow in front of them to refuel.

For dogs as energetic and seemingly wild as they are, each is shy when approached and friendly once you’ve properly introduced yourself.

Rides are limited in capacity to what the sled can fit, around two adults, or more with smaller children. Burke encourages riders to bring glasses or goggles to protect their eyes from the snow the dogs kick up and warm clothes.

Roy Douglas McKitrick

on January 27, 2013.

Roy was born in Vancouver on March 21, 1918. He met his wife Catherine on a blind date, and never looked back.

They married and eventually moved to the Wells/Bowron Lake area where he worked as a supervisor at the mines in Wells for a few years while helping his Parents at Bowron Lake.

Roy eventually bought Bowron Lake Lodge from his Mother, and with the help of his family, he built and operated the resort for 60 plus years.

He is predeceased by his Wife, Katherine and his Son, Doug.

Roy is survived by his Children; Jim (Candice), Ron (Peggy), Bill (Janice), Judy (Rick), fourteen Grandchildren and eleven Great Grandchildren,as well as many Nieces, Nephews, and extended family.

There will be no service as per Roy’s request.

Those wishing to honour Roy’s memory may do so by donation to a charity of their choice.

Begin every journey by praising God

A key moment in the history of the nation of Israel, was when God spoke to them about entering their Promised Land. They had delayed their inheritance some 40 years before, wandering around the desert.

In Deuteronomy 1, God says “You have stayed long enough at this mountain … I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land…”

For those who have accepted Jesus Christ into their lives, the Bible tells us that we share in a wonderful inheritance. Whilst this may not be real estate in the Pastor Brian Dean Middle East, we have been born Lakeview Church again into a new life, both now and eternity.

Yet many, despite Jesus’ promise of freedom, peace, joy and liberty, seem to be camped in a desert place. Imagine eating quail and wafers for almost 40 years.

The first few months may have been great, but one menu does become quite monotonous after a while. For some, our walk with God has become like that – same food, same mountain, same hot sand.

But God gave them a directive on how to break camp, pack up and move into their inheritance.

I believe there is God-given strategy in this for us today.

The tribes went in a specific order which is helpful for us. Judah, which means praise, went first.

When we tackle any issue, praising God before all else corrects our relationship with Him. Even Jesus taught us to pray by starting with praise before all else. “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”

Complaining, strategizing, sending in spies, weighing up options and so on are too often our first response.

Let our initial reaction be to praise God first.

Then God is where He should be – in control, and we are where we should be – following His lead.

The ‘Roos controlled the game, going up 3-1 in the first and continuing to score in the second and third, while clamping down defensively to ear a 7-1 win. “It was a good game right from the start,” coach Brian Kozak said.“We played as a team and got the little things right.” The series continues Saturday here in Quesnel at 7:30.

Cold saddles don’t deter serious riders JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter It may be winter, with snow covering most of Alex Fraser Park, but with the indoor arena, rodeo doesn't need to stop and they haven't.

The ropers are still at it, competing in the Winter Saddle Series through to April.

Last Saturday, the park was filled with the trucks and horse trailers of ropers and riders intent on getting themselves to A team chases down a calf at Saturday’s Winter Saddle Series event. the top.

There was a total of 69 teams competing in the Hancock, paying $311 each.

Twelve teams competed in the #6 event.

A big sale in Kamloops on January 22, with 885 head of cattle trading through the scale ring. Quality bred cows and bred heifers made up a large part of the volume and sold to a capacity crowd with keen interest.

Finlay Farms opened the bred trade with an outstanding group of Red Baldy heifers which sold to 1440.00 their Char X heifers reached 1450.00.

Al & Lorraine Sanford of Quesnel had top red cows reach 1390.00 their Black heifers traded to 1390.00 as well. 8 Mile Ranch Red Angus heifers sold to 1390.00. Stephen and Yolanda Jontz of Six Mile Creek Ranch saw the dispersal sale of their young Bred 2nd calvers hit 1410.00 their top bred heifers reached 1400.00 and 1380.00. A good supply of feeder cattle sold with Robert Pasco’s 658 lb heifers trading to 129.00 the 475 lb s/c brought 141.00. Dan and Marilyn Moss 583 lb s/c hit 141.00 the 590 lb brought 129.50. Bear breaks out of slide; Blue Collar stays undefeated in 2013

T

wo teams heading in different directions met this week in a battle for the basement of the FHL, with the Blue Collar brothers edging Serenity 3-2.

The contest featured a goal tending display usually reserved for a Habs/ Leafs contest as (Magic) Mike Burke made scintillating saves on penalty shots and breakaways, rapier like southpaw glove grabs on point blank chances to go with several stops of the larcenous variety. Despite his heroics, it was a lucky deflection off the stick of Jimmy (The Greek) Sales that dashed the Builders chances.

Serenity actually had a one goal lead

at Zamboni time, thanks to markers by (Rockin) Rob Lentz and Doug (and his Slugs) Mack, with another early tally being waved Steve Dodge off after a quick PAPERBACK WRITER whistle when the puck was thought to be caught up in the BCS net minder’s paraphernalia.

Leading Blue Collar to its third win since the New Year was recent recruit Glen (Boom Boom) Boudreau, who scored a pair thanks to some excellent

work from his centreman Kevin (Baywatch) Hesslegrave to give BCS a reprieve from the cellar after 17 straight weeks minding the rutabagas.

The other contest in the rink where nose hairs are quickly becoming an endangered species, Bear received a couple of firsts as they outlasted the Buick Boys 4-2.

The first was a two-goal explosion in the game’s first shift by Steve (Stamkos) Dodge who lit the lamp twice for the first time since 2009 as he and his line mates went plus four.

Earning the HOM was (Handsome) Dan Lowndes, who dished out a gorgeous saucer pass in the prone

position that allowed Craig Prior (Consent) to score his first ever FHL tally.

Also having quality contests were separated at birth twins (Sugar) Shane Baker, who scored once and collected three assists as (BIG) Bob Merta got in on the action with a pair of helpers.

Adding some excitement for GM were Randy (Killer) Crofts who continues to find the twine like a good wine as Ian Hannah (Montana) scored on a wild scramble just after (Handsome) Dan exited the Bear sin-bin.

Wheelin’ and Spielin’ on ice been playing as a team in the bonspiel for the last three years.

After coming close twice, being narrowly defeated by the Carol Thatcher rink in 2011 and the Terry Shpak rink in 2012, finally made the win.

Philpot and Silver really enjoy coming to Quesnel for the annual bonspiel.

Playing for Warwyk was second, Linda Hanson and lead, Cindy Nikirk.

The B event was won by the Lori Freeman rink, all of Quesnel.

Freeman and her team mates, third Sherry Needham, second Carly Backer and lead Ang Curle, were down two after four ends of play, but picked up three in the fifth end, stealing one in the sixth and two in the seventh, beating out the Brenda Ernst

rink, 7-4.

On Ernst's rink were third Gay Carter, second Bonnie May and lead Katie Molloy.

The C event went to the Trudy Bentley rink, beating Doris Williamson's rink, 7-6.

Bentley was ahead 5-0 after four ends, but Williamson picked up one in the fifth end and a steal of four in the sixth to tie the game.

However, Trudy came back with two in the seventh and won the game.

Playing with Bentley were, third Linda Sales, second Marlene Brunt and lead Gail Inglis.

Ladies hit the sheets in annual tournament The Quesnel Ladies Curling Club hosted their 53rd annual Wheel 'n Spiel bonspiel, Jan. 25 – 27.

Twenty-nine teams entered the locally sponsored event, including five of out of town teams, most returning year after year for the fun event.

The action started Friday night with the close, tense three final games played 2 p.m., Sunday.

Bragging rights went to the Crystal Haller rink, beating out the Lori Warwyk team to win the A event.

The game was tied after four ends of play, with Haller pulling ahead in the next four ends, clinching the win 7-4.

The Quesnel School District will begin enrolling Kindergarten students (including French Immersion, located at Ecole Baker Elementary) in District Schools for attendance in September 2013.

What about your knowing glance Would I ever have a chance To see you try to hide your grin Beneath your grey and bearded chin?

To be eligible to attend, a student MUST turn five years of age between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.

There are NO exceptions. To register, you will need to bring your child’s Birth Certificate, BC Care Card, and proof of residential address (i.e. Hydro bill) at the time of registration.

Children will not be registered for school without showing legal proof of age and residence in BC.
