Attendance by the public at Colwood council meetings is an ever fluctuating presence.

Go on a night with a hot-button issue such as Solar Colwood or sewage treatment and you might find council chambers nearly full.

But go on a night of regular city business and there might be one or two audience members, or none.

To make council meetings more accessible to the public Colwood is taking part in a six-month trial of live streaming its meetings online.

Granicus, a company that specializes in online applications for governments, offered Colwood a six-month free trial.

The only cost to the city is the purchase of an encoder, at $2,723.

If the city decides to keep live streaming after six months, council will have to decide on the level of service.

“As long as it’s giving people good service and it works into our system OK, then we’ll probably keep it,” said Michael Baxter, acting chief administrative officer.

Mayor Carol Hamilton said council will wait to see how the trial works out before making any decisions.

Ted Truscott and his wife Pam Truscott-White are celebrating a 20-year anniversary.

They have been a couple much longer but they have operated the Yama Neko Dojo for two decades as of Jan. 1.

The small dojo is located behind the couple’s home in Langford on Happy Valley Road and has a small following of about a dozen students spanning from children to adults.

“My main focus was to teach my family,” said Truscott, a fourth degree black belt in Shorin-Ji Karate.

Truscott has two children and Truscott-White has one, all three are adults now, but grew up at the dojo with their friends.

Karate drew Truscott in when he was 25 years old and wanted to learn self-defense.

“The No. 1 thing I got from training was emotional stability and focus,” said the 66 year old.

“That was a surprise because I got into it for the physical fitness. I love it, I’d rather be doing this than most other things.”

The dojo was built in a garage on the property and Truscott prides himself on keeping his classes traditional.

“We don’t spar here. Good karate will help you with sparring, but sparring will not help with good karate,” he said.

Tyler Baldwin has been a student of Yama Neko Dojo for about five years for the fitness but has learned the importance of patience through his practice. Now he teaches the children’s program.

“With six to 12 year olds you need to keep it quick with different versions of drills and games,” he said.

Andrew Krumm has been a student of Truscott’s for 12 years. He started when he was 17 and now he is a third degree black belt.

“We have watched him grow up,” said TruscottWhite, a first degree black belt. “I never would have thought we’d still be doing this for 20 years.”

Volunteers battle to reclaim Portage Park

UVic student Amanda Evans is helping the Town of View Royal to fight invasive species in Portage Park.

ortage Park, the largest natural park in View Royal, is under attack and the city is rallying the troops to defend it.

The enemy is invasive species of plants, particularly English ivy and daphne, and the best strategy to stop them is work, diligence and a lot of elbow grease. With this in mind the city is asking anyone interested to come out as volunteers and help.

Invasive plants, especially ivy, take over ground space and can choke native plants out of their home turf.

These plants have no natural predators in these ecosystems and proliferate.

Working with View Royal town staff, Amanda Evans, a student with the UniKyle Wells versity of Victoria’s Restoration of NatReporting ural Systems program, wrote a report over the summer on the park and has come up with a plan to stop the spread. “(We’re) hoping to improve the ecological integrity,�

Evans said. “Not to completely restore it but to improve the ecosystem health.� “It’s in desperate need of some restoration work,� said View Royal Coun. Heidi Rast. “We’ve never really done this type of project before, so it’s well situated to be a pilot project to see if what we do with this can be expanded to other native parks.�

In December volunteers helped to clear one small area of ivy. Evans said they made a good dent, but it’s only a

small portion of what needs to be done.

For years an unofficial group of volunteers from the neighbourhoods surrounding the park have worked to clear away some invasive species of plants. Evans said this effort is helpful, but their work will be even more effective when under the guidance of experts. “They are passionate about actually helping restore the park,â€? Evans said. “But without any structure, without any guidelines ‌ their hard work might not show a successful end result.â€?

Rast has volunteered her time to work in the park before, and said it’s rewarding and at the same time fun. “It’s excellent. (Evans) has it really well organized, so she knows exactly what areas to target,� Rast said. “They’re a fun group.�

The most sensitive areas of the park, and the ones that will be focused on, are five rock outcrops, home to such native species as Garry oaks and licorice ferns. Evans said it will likely take more than three years to tackle these areas.

Upcoming work parties are scheduled for Feb. 9 and 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shifts will start with a training session. Evans said volunteers do not have to stay for the full three hours, but that it’s important to be there at the start, for the training.

Evans does ask volunteers to leave their dogs and children at home.

The city already has $16,000 for webcasting, approved in the 2012 budget.

General improvements to the city’s website are also in the works. A request for proposals is out for an individual or firm to update “the visual identity� of the municipality. This will include development of a new city logo, expected to still centre around Hatley Castle. “It’s been a long time on the horizon of requests by the community to get fixed,� Hamilton said. “I would be a lot happier if we put all of our efforts into making (the website) top class.�

Money set aside from last year’s budget is still available for website work.

Langford Coun. Denise Blackwell said her city is similarly accustomed to overlapping provincial representation, and can only benefit by doubling its voice in the House of Commons.

The commission will issue a final report in June after soliciting non-binding MP feedback.

Nationwide, federal electoral districts will increase to 338 from 308.

The population of B.C. has jumped half a million to 4.4 million since the last redistribution in 2002.

Langley man charged in cigarette thefts Christopher Sharafi, 46, faces 13 charges ranging from mischief to possession of stolen property after a rash of cigarette thefts.

Staff Sgt. Gary Schenk of the Greater Victoria Regional Crime Unit believes Sharafi watched small business owners as they purchased large amounts of cigarettes in Costco stores, followed them and broke into their vehicles.

Police discovered 28 nearly identical incidents

in Saanich, Langford, Nanaimo, Burnaby, Abbotsford, Coquitlam and Kamloops. More than $100,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen over the last six months, police say.

Given the amount of cigarettes stolen, along with “past experience and street-level intelligence,” Schenk said RCU members believe the smokes were being sold on a black market. editor@vicnews.com

Langford Fire Rescue is sounding the alarm and educating kids on burn awareness.

“We want to make sure that kids are aware that it’s not just fire that can burn people,” said Lance Caven, fire prevention officer at Langford Fire Rescue. “What we’re teaching the kids, especially the younger kids, is to remember that hot liquid can hurt you

as much as a fire can.”

Statistics show scalds, not fire, are the most common cause of burns to children says the Langford fire prevention officer. Many kids and parents don’t realize the hazard exists and is the basis for next week’s BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund’s 17th Annual Burn Awareness Week Feb. 3 to 9. Langford Fire Rescue is among the departments spreading information to youth in the community including the

popular poster contest boasting $6,000 in prize money.

“I’ve gone around to all the schools and provided the schools with the information … we usually have a couple kids that win,” Caven said.

Cheer squad recruits spirit

ive me an “R,”give me an “E”, give me a “B-E-L-S.” The Westshore Rebels are recruiting cheerleaders for the upcoming season.

Cheerleading coach, Laura Jaundrew is building her squad to cheer at both home and away games from August to October.

While dance and gymnastic experience is an asset it is not required. Some people have made the cut without any previous experience.

Juandrew cheered on the squad for four years and this is her second year coaching. Former cheerleader Carly Champoux is assistant coach.

“My favourite part of Charla Huber cheering is the stunting,” Reporting said Juandrew explaining the squad performs onelegged lifts, tossing and pyramids. “It’s really fun and it’s a good workout.”

So far seven are committed to the team.

Bad driving, or seamanship in this case, in Portage inlet drew attention of police Sunday morning.

West Shore RCMP hailed the $50,000 vessel from shore in the 100-block of the Island Highway.

View Royal Fire Rescue and RCMP boarded the vessel that they determined was crippled with a damaged propeller. The man aboard was injured when the boat halted suddenly because of a line wrapped around the propeller.

While the Victoria man was being treated for minor injuries RCMP officers learned the vessel was stolen.

Police recognized the man as a person of interest from another nautical caper – a Jan. 27 boat break and enter captured on video by an Esquimalt resident.

Darrell Martin Tychuk, 23, faces charges related to boat theft and for breaching several court ordered conditions, including a prohibition on operating a motorized vehicle. dpalmer@vicnews.com

The two new high schools to be built on the West Shore now have principals, principles and, in the case of the school in the Glen Lake area, a shortlist of designers.

At a public meeting at Isabelle Reader Theatre on Tuesday officials from School District 62 revealed a series of significant steps propelling forward the construction of the new schools.

District superintendent Jim Cambridge announced the principals for the new schools. He explained having principals in line for the new schools, even though they won’t be open until 2015, will help with the planning of programming for the schools.

As previously announced, the new principal of Belmont secondary school in the Glen Lake area will be a current Belmont vice principal Ray Miller.

The new principal for the high school at Royal Bay in Colwood will be current Millstream elementary school principal Windy Beadell.

Beadell was interviewed the day before the meeting and found out she had the job about 20 minutes before the announcement. She has worked for the district for more than 23 years and has been an administrator for the past eight.

“I’m excited. Ever since I found out about this opportunity, it’s always felt like this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my career,” Beadell said.

“The vision I have of where we’re going with education, it so comes alive when I think of [the new school].”

The land Belmont sits on is estimated to be worth about $30 million.

The agreement for the new schools was signed in December 2012.

EllisDon Corporation and Kinetic Construction Ltd. (Vancouver), Heatherbrae Builders Ltd. (Nanaimo) and Yellowridge DesignBuild Ltd. (Port Moody) are the three companies chosen to submit designs for the new school in the Glen Lake area.

“They all have great experience with design-build and they all have had in some way dealings with building schools,” Hobbs said.

Those companies will now have four months to each come up with a design incorporating everything on the school district’s wish list. Only one design will be chosen, but the other two will become the property of the district and elements from them may be rolled in to the ultimate design.

The company with the winning design will also be the company to build the school.

The shortlist of builders for the school at Royal Bay will be

announced in March.

The total budget for the two schools are $50.8 million for Belmont and $38.6 million for the school at Royal Bay. Assistant superintendent Dave Betts laid out some of the basic principles and features of the two new schools.

Belmont at Glen Lake, which will house 1,200 students, will be geared towards more traditional learning models.

The high school at Royal Bay will feature an educational model that is more flexible and will allow students to have more choice about how, when and where they learn.

“We will not have two schools that are identical. We will have two schools that are a little bit different,” Betts said. “We want to provide an option for students who are going to school in our district to chose a learning style that best suits their needs.”

Here comes the tax, man The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives released a report this week that says if the province returned to 2000 tax levels it could wipe out the deficit, estimated at $1.47 billion, in one year.

That’s something to think about.

B.C.’s finances are tight because of several cuts to both personal and business taxes that have thinned the Tough choices budget steadily over the last decade. If the ahead for any province collected the government same amount in tax revenues as it did in 2000, it would have $3.5 billion more in public funds, no deficit, and the ability to invest in enhanced and even new public services.

While raising taxes doesn’t sound like a great idea on the surface, there is no evidence that lower taxes have stimulated our economy. In fact, the opposite appears to be true.

When the Liberals came in they gutted the public service and got the province out of the red. But the economy was in a different place then. At the time our resources were selling well globally, the U.S. housing market was booming and the economy was generally in good shape.

Where our taxes come from has altered, too.

We are taking less from corporations and more from families, less from higher income earners and more from the middle class.

British Columbians now have to decide what they value more: services or disposable income – or find a balance between the two.

Experience says cut taxes to create jobs, but in poor economic times governments are not anxious to take those kind of risks.

Whether we have a Liberal, NDP or other government, tough decisions on taxation are going to have to be made.

A huge deficit is a job killer. It leads to consumer pessimism and an economic slow down.

Raising taxes will not be an easy sell for any government, but we may have no other choice if we want to see services maintained.

One of our reporters wrote a story a few years ago that examined a family who tried to avoid radio frequencies by living deep in the woods and who refused to own a microwave oven or cordless phone. That unleashed a surprising tirade derision and incredulity toward the family from readers.

That led me to believe that there’s a normally quiet population out there that: a) realizes you can’t possibly avoid radio frequencies, even out in the woods; and b) is happy to live with cellphones and wireless technology, and possibly smart meters, without worrying about ill effects.

When it comes to wireless smart meters and WiFi, people shouldn’t be forced to have the devices at home if it scares them, although WiFi signals are almost unavoidable in an urban area. And no matter what kind of gross exaggerations are asserted by anti-WiFi groups, people with cellphones or who have smart meters aren’t going to start dropping like flies.

Personally I’d be more concerned about getting cancer from the sun.

This being Victoria, I don’t have to worry much about that either.

Re: Victoria revs up speed limit debate (News, Jan. 25) I would like to provide a clarification for your readers regarding Esquimalt speed limits. The article provides good comment from Esquimalt engineering manager, Will Weiler. He provided some explanation to the speeds posted along Esquimalt Road.

The speed limit within the Township is 50 km/h unless otherwise posted. This is consistent with the provincial act. The speed limit is varied from this standard based on schools, playgrounds, parks, road geometry and visibility.

The speed limit on the Island Highway in View Royal is 50 km/h. It is then 40 km/h along Craigflower Road in Esquimalt, then 30 km/h along Craigflower in Victoria.

The speed limit along our portion of the road was changed from 50 to 40 km/h approximately two years ago.

This change was done in the interests of traffic calming and to help provide a safer corridor for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Discussions were held with VicPD about this change and they were in agreement that it would help.

The speed limit along Esquimalt Road within Esquimalt is 40 km/h, whereas within Victoria it is posted as 50 km/h. This was also done in the

same manner and for the same reasons Craigflower Road was changed.

Consistency of speed limits within a corridor, across municipal boundaries, to the degree it is possible, would be helpful in understanding the expectations of all using the road.

Lower urban speeds benefit everyone Re: Victoria revs up speed limit debate Reducing the residential speed limit by 10 km/h is an idea whose time has come.

Most vehicle accidents occur in urban centres and the connection between urban vehicle speed and citizen safety is profound.

Multiple studies show a significant reduction in the probability of death for pedestrians or cyclists, as the speed of impact is lowered.

Kudos to Victoria City Council for pushing for a provincewide urban speed limit of 40 km/h.

Communities around the world are lowering urban speeds with huge positive results.

Benefits to drivers include fewer and less severe accidents, no impact on travel time, reduced fuel and vehicle operating costs and lower car

insurance rates.

Benefits to children, pedestrians, cyclists and neighbourhoods include increased safety, cleaner air and less noise.

Plus when streets are safer, more people walk and ride instead of drive, resulting in healthier citizens who need less from the health-care system.

Benefits to governments and taxpayers include lower costs associated with signage and carnage. Implementing a general ruling on urban speed is far cheaper than dealing with one road at a time, and reducing accidents means less police time spent on attending crashes and doing the related paperwork.

Also, slower urban vehicle speeds reduce greenhouse gas emissions – a huge component of the B.C. government’s commitment to sustainability and action on climate change.

There are no downsides to the resolution Victoria city council is planning to put before the Union of B.C. Municipalities this fall. Drivers get where they are going in the same amount of time, and citizens have safer streets and more travel choices.

It is a total win-win.

Now it’s our job to get behind council to make sure it gets passed.

Gender equity needed in Doyle’s criticisms I was surprised that the usually very precise Auditor General John Doyle made a glaring error when he referred to the B.C. Liberal government, in their handling of his reappointment, as a “Mickey Mouse” operation.

Doyle should have said that the manner in which Christy Clark and her administration dealt with this issue was that of a Minnie Mouse operation. In these politically correct times, it is important to be accurate with such delicate matters as the gender of mice.

Institutions need not be frightening places Re: Mental illness costs sizeable (Our View, Jan. 23) You don’t advocate “a return to the days of institutionalizing people with mental disabilities simply because they can’t function at a high enough level to live on their own.”

Is it better to let them be “free” to wander the streets, often unaware of goings-on around them, or perhaps being taken advantage of by others who function on a “slightly higher level?” Institutions do not have to be ugly, frightening and depressing places.

But this star player is as modest as he is talented.

“I hope to keep it up, but I don’t try to focus on it too much,” said the 17-year-old.

“In high school basketball anyone averaging 20 points a game is impressive and noteworthy,” said Belmont coach Kevin Brown.

Spaven started playing basketball when he was six years old, learning the Canadian-born game from his father Curt Spaven.

“My dad was my coach all through elementary and middle school. He still helps me,” said Spaven.

Spaven spent the last couple weeks on the sidelines after suffering a concussion during a game on Jan. 18.

“I dove for a ball and hit my head, then a team mate tripped over me and pushed my head down,” explained the star player. “It was totally an accident.”

Despite the injury Spaven is so far ahead he could still have the most baskets in the league when the season ends in February.

All three years at Belmont, Spaven has played on the senior team.

“I am glad my coaches saw potential in me,” he said.

Spaven hopes to play for the Camosun Chargers.

International award reflects shop’s transformation Joel Luyt has long been invested in the boarding sports – the snow and skate variety.

But it wasn’t until last year, when he bought Sanction Boardshop from supplier Brad Richmond that he got a chance to mould his vision of a successful Don Descoteau business Biz Beat involving his passion.

Luyt, 32, spent 13 years in Abbotsford before moving his family to the Island in 2012. In buying his own business – the shop has locations on Herald Street downtown, and Langford – he brought experience in both financial planning and youth services to the table, both valuable assets for his new choice of work.

Almost from the get-go, Luyt and his staff have worked to shed the traditional model of skateboard and snowboard shops: boards and trucks and black T-shirts only.

“You cannot stay stagnant, you have to evolve and know what is trending,” he says.

His expansive, high-ceilinged downtown shop is all about colour: the main floor is filled with clothing while the upper level features a wide enough selection of boards to appeal to any rider.

While he recognizes that certain customers will be stereotypical boarders and hipsters, he has also tried to appeal to “the average Joe

in need. Among them, Country Grocer raised more than $10,000 for Help Fill a Dream through its sale of dream bouquets and other items. Long and McQuade Music customers in Victoria and Nanaimo donated $2,400 for the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s music therapy program.

To further broaden his customer base, Luyt distributed an eight-page minicatalogue targeting parents shopping for their kids for Christmas. It was a big hit and brought new faces into the stores. “That, in this industry, has not been done.”

These days, he estimates the clientele is an equal mix of teenagers and young adults, and parents.

In a town where owneroperated board shops such as Sitka, HTO and Coastline have developed loyal followings, Sanction has grabbed a chunk of the market and flourished.

“We basically doubled what (the previous owner) did in sales in a year and a half,” Luyt says.

The company’s turnaround didn’t go unnoticed. Sanction Victoria was recently named Canadian region shop of the year at the 2012 TransWorld Business awards in Long Beach, Calif.

“(Wining the award) feels incredible. I mean, we’re in Victoria, not downtown Vancouver or Whistler,” Luyt says. “This speaks volumes about our staff and our building and how accessible we are.”

The store on Jacklin Road will be expanding soon, moving two doors down to a space that will effectively double its selling space.

Luyt’s longer-range plans include expanding to Nanaimo and perhaps the B.C. Interior.

“I definitely want to become the shop on the Island,” he says. “I want to work on boosting the Sanction brand in future.”

A bite with the Wolves Eat with Wolves on Wednesday.

The junior B Westshore Wolves will be at the Colwood McDonalds from 5 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 6. Fans are welcome to meet and eat with the Wolves players.

“It’s really important for us to set a good example in our community and reach out to the kids,” said team captain Josh Bloomenthal.

The players will sign autographs for children and the Wolves mascot will be there for some fun.

Bloomenthal said it’s also nice for the team to know the youth that are

moving up through the Juan de Fuca hockey system.

“It’s something that kids can do that’s productive and teaches them the values that we look for in citizens,” said Bloomenthal. “It’s fun for us too, we like it. We like to help out and joke around with these kids.”

That night the Wolves play the Saanich Braves at 7:30 p.m. at Bear Mountain Arena.

A Norwegian shipping company has been slapped with $70,000 in fines after one of its tanker ships dumped fish oil into the Pacific Ocean, 220 kilometres off the west coast of Vancouver Island two years ago.

Crown prosecutor John Cliffe and Champion Shipping A/S lawyer David Jones presented a joint submission in provincial court last week agreeing to the $70,000 penalty for the 2010 incident.

The vessel Champion was observed by a Transport Canada surveillance aircraft with a hose dangling off its port side, discharging a “brownishcoloured oily liquid” into the ocean. It was later discovered the ship had stopped at a Vancouver port carrying about 3,800 tonnes of crude Mexican fish oil for delivery to the Mainland.

After the oil was unloaded and the ship left for China, the ship’s master decided to clean the tank.

In total, 938 litres of a substance partyl including the fish oil, was discharged into the ocean, leaving an oil slick estimated to be more than 56 kilometres long.

“The fine is consistent with other disposal at sea cases in the country and is a good deterrent,” said Environment Canada enforcement officer Jarrett Brochez.

A positive outlook, good physical and mental health along with Ånancial security are the keys to active aging, says a report from the National Seniors Council.

The May 2010 report on volunteering among seniors and positive and active aging found the two are closely related.

“The most difÅcult challenge to meet for people who are aging is isolation and loneliness and how to break that cycle,” said Sidney councillor Marilyn Loveless, who sat on the National Seniors Council for three years. “Volunteering is a way to do that.”

Productive, active participation in all aspects of economic, social and community life; self-reliance; recognition as an actively contributing member of society; a positive

outlook about self and future; good physical and mental health and ability to function; mutually supportive social relationships; Ånancial security a safe and supportive environment to live and work; and the availability of adequate services and support were all found to be instrumental in keeping those past retirement age happy and healthy.

One of the best ways to achieve these goals is to volunteer, the study found.

“One of the facts that interested me the most in the study is a recognition that trying to pigeonhole people into groups based on age does not necessarily provide the best service to those people. And that applies

“I am old enough to know better but young enough to do it again,” says 62-year-old Brock Emberton. He has lived on the Westshore for 11 years, but has worked in the area for 37 years, setting up his own law firm in 1976.

Highlights of his life include being involved in the revival of Victoria Plywood as a worker co-operative after Canadian Pacific closed the mill.

An avid curler, Emberton also rose to the ranks of the provincial finals in competitive curling.

Ballet Victoria, choreographer collaborate for Dance Days Travis Paterson News staff

This week Ballet Victoria will premier a short piece commissioned explicitly for them by renowned Canadian choreographer Joe Laughlin.

Dance Victoria, which runs Dance Days, hired Laughlin with the purpose of debuting it during the annual festival and Ballet Victoria couldn’t be happier.

“This is our first time having Laughlin do a piece for us so it’s very exciting,” said Ballet Victoria artistic and executive director Paul Destrooper. “It’s hard to bring in choreographers because of the cost, and he’s very well-known.”

For Ballet Victoria, Laughlin has spun a winter tale, one which could help break the maddening routine of Victoria’s dark days.

It’s a short piece called the White Waltz and it’s about 13 minutes in length, with two distinct parts.

Part one is set to the Blue Danube by Strauss, part two is set to Chopin’s Nocturne.

“It captures that early magic of winter, the crisp air, the anticipation of the first snowfall, and the crystallizing of the ice, which comes through the piano,” Destrooper said.

White Waltz uses 10 dancers in all and isn’t without humour, which Laughlin is known for.

Roller blades will help bring alive the charm of a frozen lake.

The dance then moves to a pas de deux (duet) with Destrooper and Andrea Bayne, BV’s principal dancer.

White Waltz will run with as part of Laughlin’s 25th anniversary as a choreographer, along with three of his favourites, Harold, Billy, Stan and Jack, Left, and Dusk.

Show times are this Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 6 and 7), 7:30 p.m. at McPherson Playhouse.

Laughlin, who runs his own company, Joe Ink., visited for two weeks in October to work with the Ballet Victoria dancers for the White Waltz.

“It was a unique experience,” said Bayne, a Haligonian now in her fifth year with BV. “It was my first time working with him and although there is always a new vocabulary with every choreographer, his movements are very specific.”

Laughlin is known for his gymnast-inspired stylings of contemporary and neoclassical ballet, which is to be expected. His ability to share his vision with the dancers also impressed Bayne.

“He has a way of making you realize that the movement is beyond just repeating and comes from a deeper meaning.”

For Bayne it was a story Laughlin put in her head, one for viewers to keep in mind.

“During the pas de deux I am stuck in the past, and Destrooper’s character tries to bring me into the future, but I don’t want to come. To present that, I fall on the end of notes, but he tries to bring me up to speed with action at the beginning of the notes.”

During its 10-day span the interactive festival offers a series of shows and dozens of free workshops throughout Greater Victoria.

More than survival How We Survive is a Victoria-based band which originated from Chasing Shadows, a rock duo featuring Brody Reid on drums and Eric White on guitar/vox.

Once Chasing Shadows had run its course, Reid and White wanted to move onto something a little different, so they created How We Survive with third band member, Zach Bird, on bass.

With a heavier style, and a few shows under its belt, How We Survive decided to record its first four-track EP in March 2012. Self-released,

wo of Victoria’s hottest jazz musicians, Richard Moody and Quinn Bachand, are teaming up to recreate the magic of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli for an epic night of Gypsy Jazz music.

It’s all happening at Hermann’s Jazz Club tonight (Feb. 1) starting at 8 p.m. Joining Moody and Bachand are Joey Smith on bass and Reuben Wier on rhythm guitar and vocals.

A veteran of the Canadian music scene and considered by some an underground legend, violinist Moody has delved into almost every style a string player can try. Still in his teens he moved to Montreal and joined the gypsy jazz group Swing Dynamique.

Several years later, after a classical music education at the University of Manitoba and the Conservatoire Nationale de Musique in Caen, France, he cofounded the acclaimed folk rock group Acoustically Inclined, garnering a huge national following.

Because of their recent success the two are now in the running to compete for Team B.C. at the 2015 Canada Games. Like Jolley, Alexander wants to compete for Team B.C. and will have to decide if he can fit in any other sports.

Both won gold at last year’s Edmonton International in the U15 category and gold

at the 2012 B.C. Winter Games in Vernon, although there wasn’t much competition for Alexander.

“Not a lot of guys my size are 14,” he said.

The two will compete at nationals in Vancouver in early July.

Brain injury survivor works to give back Ted Hill News staff

Are you still a genius?

The question lingers in my mind as I ponder a riddle set out by Greg Goldberg. I’m not feeling like a genius and my grey matter isn’t serving me especially well, but I’ve got nothing to complain about.

Seated around Goldberg are four guys whose brains betray them on a daily basis. They tend to forget things, struggle with problem solving, and can have fits of anger and impulsiveness.

But on this night, they’re concentrated on brain-bending cognitive exercises while recording an Internetbroadcast game show called Are You Still a Genius?.

Goldberg lays out the question: Make “new door” one word. The four men chuckle as I struggle. The answer is “one word.” Goldberg smiles.

“We try to use all areas of the brain for cognitive ability,” he says. “This question is the logical going against the spatial.”

Goldberg hosts his game show at Mary Cridge Manor, a nondescript apartment block on Yates Street that houses a dozen brain injury survivors, and is operated by the Cridge Centre for the Family.

The men enjoy an easy-going camaraderie – they have dinner, chat and tell off-colour jokes. For the broadcast, Goldberg records their answers and stitches together a video using the men’s photos and slides of the questions. Now finished its second season, the game has a dedicated

“Are You Still a Genius? has caught fire. Last year we had 30 or 40 (online) visitors. Now it’s up to 150 to 160. Last week it was over 200,” Goldberg says.

“It forces you to think outside the box.

A lot of people who watch the show think it’s easy to compete against brain injury survivors. I get emails saying ‘they do a lot better than me.’”

“You come here and realize you’re not the only one with problems,” says Peter Brozik, 62, who suffered a stroke.

“It’s fun. I like to laugh. It’s fun to see how different guys relate to this kind of thing.”

Goldberg, 45, a resident of Oak Bay, developed the game as part of the Blue Sheet Club, his free volunteer service to help brain injury survivors and their families cope with long-term changes to their lives. The B.C. Brain Injury Association estimates about 22,000 people in B.C. suffer brain injuries each year. A 2011 study by the Cridge showed at least half of the homeless population in Victoria have brain injuries, and most of those suffered the injury before becoming homeless.

“Changes after a brain injury are significant. It effects relationships, controlling anger, maintaining a job, basic life skills,” says Geoff Sing, manager of brain injury services at the Cridge Centre. “Personal relationships break down, you lose your job. There is significant loss. A brain injury … can have a huge cost to society.”

Goldberg suffered a traumatic brain injury after a gravel truck slammed into his car in 1998.

“Life can be altered in a flash,” he says. “I made a promise that if I got healthy again, I’d do everything I could to give back to brain injury survivors and make the journey as smooth as I can.”

A shift in supply and demand expected to hit B.C. in 2016 means employers are expected to have a difficult time finding well-educated people to fill positions.

This ominous jobs deficit forecast, put out by the Research Universities’ Council of British Columbia this week, comes with a call to action from the presidents of six B.C. universities asking for better funding from the provincial government. They say that’s the only way a deficit will be avoided.

“It’s simple: we’re not educating enough people,” said Allan Cahoon, president of Royal Roads University. “B.C. has historically made up for that deficit with in-migration from other provinces, but that’s in decline. We’re also going to see an increase in the number of people retiring, and there’s a shortage of talent coming out of our universities.”

In 2016, 5,900 jobs will go unfilled in B.C. due to a skills deficit, they say. By 2020, that number is expected to balloon to 18,800.

David Turpin, president of the University of Victoria, says the deficit will span many sectors.

“It’s going to be all across the board. Some of the big ones are areas such as supervisors, nurse supervisors, registered nurses, teachers, auditors, managers in retail, all types of engineers,” he said.

The RUCBC is calling on the government to take three steps immediately to reverse the forecasted gap: secure space for 11,000 new students in universities, colleges and trades schools over the next four years; improve financial assistance programs; and commit to improve B.C.’s research and innovation potential.

“Moving up into election environment, it’s absolutely critical that this province be able to educate the young people so that they can succeed in the new economy,” Turpin said.

RONA hosts exclusive contractor event RONA Langford and the RONA Youth Foundation make community donation RONA’s Vancouver Island stores hosted the 2013 Contractor Show on January 29th. Over 700 commercial contractors attended from the entire Island.
