Women’s conference offers diverse potpourri of sessions

By Treena Mielke Diversity, the theme of this year’s Rimbey’s annual women’s conference, is reflected in the choice of as well as the variety of vendors and fascinating keynote speaker who will be in attendance.

The conference will be held Feb. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre and promises to provide a day well worth attending with an interesting potpourri of sessions and shopping opportunities.

Following registration and refreshments, the day will kickoff with a welcome and presentation by keynote speaker Noreen Olson whose talk entitled, That’s My Story and I’m Sticking To It, will be sure to set the mood for a great day to follow.

Olson, who was raised west of Ponoka, is a farm wife who wrote a biweekly column for the Didsbury Review for 26 years. She has also written several books in which she combined humor with nostalgia, warmth, social comment and love of her family, animals, birds and the country. She is a long-time member of Alberta Women’s Institute and active in the Sons of Norway and Parkhills Women’s Guild and past chairperson of the Alberta Rural Childcare Pilot project.

Following the keynote speaker, the ladies in attendance will have the opportunity to take part in three concurrent sessions.

Kerry Huber, a nutritionist with Alberta Health Services in Wetaskiwin, will offer the session, Healthy Eating Starts Here; Cooking with Beans and Lentils.

Those who wish to enhance their creative side may wish to take part in a session led by storyteller and author Mary Hays.

Hays learned the art of storytelling as a child at the kitchen table but notes the creative art is not just for the young and people of all ages delight in the stimulation and enjoyment of listening to a fine story. Her storytelling has taken her across Canada to Brazil and to London, England.

Tea for two: Pam Scott and Valerie-Ray St-Jean enjoy a late afternoon cup of tea and a visit. St-Jean held her first ‘high tea’ event last weekend at My Special Teas. High tea is an afternoon event where a variety of teas and an assortment of specialty foods is served. St-Jean plans to serve a high tea the last Saturday of each month.

Happenings at the Rimbey Seniors Drop-In Centre

have been president of the Rimbey Senior’s Drop-in Centre for almost a year now and have enjoyed it very much.

Our senior’s drop-in centre is a very busy place with lots of events, floor curling, pool, carpet bowling, card games (crib, whist, bridge, 500) and there is also a dance every Tuesday night. The Centre is also rented out for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Christmas parties, meetings, etc. Memberships are now due for the 2013 year. Our membership has increased over the past year but we would love to see more seniors out. Please come out and join us and see what we have to offer. The successful Tenderer shall be the Principal or Prime Contractor for the Project pursuant to the applicable construction safety legislation and shall have primary responsibility for the safety of all workers and equipment on the Project in accordance with such legislation.

I had a really, really bad day Wednesday, which I blame totally on the government.

At the risk of sounding like my dearly departed father, who used to blame the weather, the condition of the roads, the loss of his favorite hockey team, the price of sugar, gas and coal Treena Mielke on those unseen bad guys On The Other Side who ran our country, I’m sticking with that theory.

“Damn government,” I muttered when I discovered my car battery had zero life. And later, it seemed to make perfect sense that the government was responsible for the gale force winds, the icy roads and the guy who almost rear-ended me because of all of the above.

Being a reasonable person, I wouldn’t have blamed the government for all the ills in my life, if it weren’t for the penny.

I found a lucky penny in my driveway. The reason I know it was lucky is it was facing heads up, a clear sign that lady luck was smiling at me.

I picked the penny up, rubbing my mittened hand across its surface just to double check it was facing the right way and stuck it in my pocket confidently. I even sang a few bars of some kind of happy song, just under my breath, of course, so the neighbors couldn’t hear me and think to themselves, “Weird, she is really weird.”

But, despite the lucky penny find, it turned out my luck ran out before it even got started that day, as things seemed to go from bad to worse, so I, in my misery, turned into my dad and blamed the government and immediately felt better. No wonder my penny wasn’t lucky, the government has totally changed the rules about them.

They are not even being made anymore. No doubt, any sentimental ritual about finding them is nul and void, as well.

I self-righteously toss my lucky penny back into the snowbank and decide to make better use of my luck by purchasing a lotto ticket.

In reality the government’s plan to phase out the penny is probably a good one. And, it seems charities are coming up with ways to make good use of all those pennies that take up space in our wallets, on our dressers and in large Texas Mickey bottles hidden in the corner of the bedroom.

Yes, it’s good to get rid of the penny, but, as with anything that is no longer there, its demise brings certain nostalgia.

I remember looking at my sister standing under the glare from a bare light bulb in her living room.

“Your hair shines like a new penny,” I said, admiringly.

And I remember the general store of my childhood. It, too, had bare light bulbs and oiled floors, and spread out, in tempting display, on its counter, was an assortment of candy, most of which could be purchased for a penny, which I usually had stuck in my grubby little hand. There were suckers that were all the colors of the rainbow and jawbreakers and bubble gum and, best of all, these little black candies we innocently called nigger babies. They were three for a penny, so if you had two pennies you were rich, indeed.

The store is gone now, existing only in the yellowed, dog-eared pages of my memories along with party telephone lines and my sister’s beautiful copper coloured hair.

And, now the penny, that humble coin that made kids like me feel rich in days gone by, is to go by the wayside as well.

I sigh and think about the way we were and then I think about that Texas Mickey bottle full of pennies I have.

It is so heavy I can hardly lift it. I decide we must have been collecting pennies, ever since we were very, very young and had aspirations that one day, we would use these pennies to buy a new car or put a kid through university.

Well, that’s not going to happen.

Damn government!

The Little Englanders win big The real problem is continental drift: Brussels, the capital of the European Union, is getting further and further away from England. Or at least that is British Prime Minister David Cameronís line.

Cameron made his long awaited speech promising a referendum on continued British membership in the European Union and he placed the blame squarely on plate tectonics: “People are increasingly frustrated that decisions (are being) taken further and further away from them...”

The “frustrated” people in question are English, of course. Hostility to the European Union is mainly an English thing but that matters a lot in the United Kingdom, where 55 million of the kingdom’s 65 million people live in England.

The “Little Englander” glories in the notion of England being unencumbered by foreign ties and commitments and the phrase is now used to describe strongly nationalist, even xenophobic people on the right of English politics. Those people, always present in significant numbers within Cameron’s Conservative Party, have now won the internal party debate.

Every Conservative leader has had to deal with these people. They always managed to contain them in the past but things have changed. The long recession and relatively high immigration of recent years have increased the popularity of the extreme right in England, and the Conservatives are losing their more right-wing supporters to the anti-EU, anti-immigration United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).

Cameron’s promise of a referendum on EU membership is first and foremost an attempt to steal UKIP’s thunder and win back the defecting Conservative voters. He doesn’t really want to leave the EU but he really does want to win the election that is due in 2015.

His reluctance to be the man who took Britain out of the EU was clear. The referendum would not

take place until after the next election, and only if the Conservative Party won enough seats in 2015 to form a government on its own. (Its current coalition partner, the Liberal Democratic Party, opposes the whole idea).

Cameron says he will spend the next two years renegotiating the terms of Britain’s EU membership to “repatriate” many powers from Brussels to London and to make various changes in the way the EU is run. Then, if he is satisfied with the outcome, he will support EU membership in the election and in the subsequent referendum, which will be held by 2017. But he had no satisfactory answers to the hard questions that followed his speech.

What if the 26 other EU members refuse to tie themselves up in knots just to ease Cameronís local political problems? Would he support continued EU membership in the promised referendum if he didn’t have a “new deal” to offer the voters. He simply wouldnít answer those questions.

So for the next four years, all those foreign companies that use the United Kingdom as a convenient, English-speaking centre to produce goods and services for the European market will be rethinking their investment strategies. If the United Kingdom may leave the EU by 2017, is this really the right place to put their money? It will probably be a long dry season for the British economy.

How did an allegedly grown-up country talk itself into this position? It’s an attitude that was summed up in an apocryphal English newspaper headline of the 1930s: “Fog in (the English) Channel; Continent Cut Off.” Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Public school trustees busy with meetings

By Amelia Naismith Within the next several months Wolf Creek Public School trustees are going to be kept busy as they attend event after event and meeting after meeting.

Threat and risk assessment follow-ups On Jan. 24 and 25 trustees Lorrie Jess, Bob Huff, Trudy Bratland and Barb Walker were to attend a meeting geared to discuss threat and risk protocols in schools. Leading the meeting is Kevin Cameron from the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and the Trauma Response.

“At Wolf Creek School Division, we strive to put a continued effort into the treat and risk assessment procedure,” said Amber Hester, assistant superintendent of student services, in a letter presented to the trustees at their Jan. 15 meeting.

Following a gun threat made against Ponoka Composite High School on Dec. 21, the trustees are also meeting with Jeff Johnson, minister of education, to discuss that situation and how it’ll affect the future.

“Would you like to highlight safety in the schools in light of recent incidents?” Joe Henderson, secretary treasurer, asked the board.

“I think that should be a high priority item because it speaks to the safety of the students and it speaks to the safety of the staff,” added trustee Karin Engen.

Engen feels if the board is going to approach funding for safety precautions in schools then they need to provide Johnson with as much information as possible.

The trustees will also lobby Johnson for a new school in Blackfalds. Jess believes Blackfalds should be a top priority at the meeting.

Testimonials, as well as facts, are going to be brought forth in hopes of getting Johnson to support a new school.

Provincial Skills Canada The provincial Skills Canada competition is being held in May. On May 15, the first day of the competition, Engen will attend the competition in support of its endeavors and any students competing for Wolf Creek.

Conferences of choice

As a result of discussions that took between the trustees, two other conferences they were invited to have been declared conferences of choice.

The Rural Education Symposium, March 3 to 5 was made a conference of choice, as was the invitation the board received to attend the Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance short luncheon and session.

Mental health and substance abuse can be connected

By Amelia Naismith While substance abuse is on the rise, as are the number of mentally ill cases treated, society has been slower to become educated and enlightened about mental health advancements.

According to the August 2008 annual National Report Card on Health Care for the Canadian Medical Association, only 50 per cent of people would discuss a mentally ill family member with friends or co-workers, while 72 per cent would discuss a can-

When a person suffers from both a mental illness or disorder and substance abuse problems, it’s a concurrent disorder, which leads to an increased number of challenges and obstacles for the sufferer.

Mental health and substance abuse have many connections and, concerning concurrent disorders, contribute to one another. “One might be creating the other,” said Pat McNulty, manager of Alberta Health addictions services in Red Deer.

Some people self-medicate to relieve symptoms of mental illnesses such as insomnia or anxiety.

Substance abuse can also be a risk factor for mental illness; the substances or withdrawal can worsen psychiatric symptoms, such as depression or hallucinations.

The Canadian Mental Health Association, British Columbia division, says concurrent disorders, due to their cycles similar to substance abuse and mental illness, can often lead to poverty and homelessness. Because of the prevalent socio-economic situation and behavioral issues, people with concurrent disorders are more likely to come to the attention of police and other authorities.

Since it’s easier to spot substance abuse than mental illness, which can also be masked by substance abuse and mistaken for substance abuse, many sufferers of concurrent disorders are criminalized rather than treated, says the association’s article.

It’s been difficult for those with concurrent disorders to receive treatment because the disorder could be misdiagnosed as a single disorder due to the commonality of symptoms. Also, in some cases, mental illness treatment programs may reject someone with substance abuse problems and addiction treatments may refuse a mentally ill person.

ior stems from the fact that treatments used to treat one half the disorder is in appropriate for the other half.

The British Columbia division says in some cases substance abusers needed a confrontational approach to their treatment, which could disturb a mentally ill person.

However, the model of treating the two sides of the disorder separately is no longer frequent. “I think that’s old, that idea is old. Years ago, in addiction it was the chicken before the egg,” said Carla Prediger, care manager with community addiction and mental health, central zone.

At one time there were debates about whether the mental health issues needed to be dealt with first or if it needed to be the other way around.

“You’re always treating both, no matter what, nothing is not discussed.

You’re working simultaneously to deal with the issues that stem from both those problems. It’s by far the best way to treat mental health and addiction issues,” said Prediger.

Treatments can be performed by a single clinician trained in both mental health and addictions issues or by a mental health therapist and an addictions counsellor working together. Patients can also be met on an outpatient basis.

“Sometimes it’s important to give a patient intensive interventions, perhaps including detox and stabilizations,” said McNulty. “Sometimes it’s not necessary for that level of intervention.”

Prediger and McNulty say concurrent disorder treatment has improved since mental health and addiction assistance began working together. “I think mental health and addiction services are an integral part of every community. And I think what has probably been a challenge and is truly an asset for us now is the ability for us to work together,” said Prediger.

Also, treatments for concurrent disorders have become more personalized. “It’s very individualized.

What any good clinician does is they

try to meet the client, understand who the client is, what is the mix of their concerns, what is the mix of their strengths or assets and try to individualize their treatment,” said McNulty.

“I think it’s really based on where the person is at. We’ve got people coming in for many reasons, and with many different backgrounds and histories. So I don’t think there is any one specific modality,” Prediger added.

McNulty says for people just concerned about concurrent disorders there are plenty of people to talk to in Ponoka.

An addiction counsellor from Red Deer comes to Ponoka, to the Mental Health Centre, on Wednesdays.

The office is open Monday to Friday and offers a range of services, including a children’s mental health program, adult short-term therapy services, a seniors’ mental health nurse, and a community mental health assertive outreach program. Which is for the more persistent, severe mentally ill, said Prediger.

The Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury also offers a concurrent disorder inpatient program staffed with mental health and addictions personnel.

“But frequently, for a centre like Ponoka or some of the other rural places, the resources that aren’t available locally the local professionals can help the client get connected,” said McNulty.

Ponoka has both the mental health and addictions office. Lacombe has a mental health office and is serviced by an addictions counsellor from Red Deer, as is Rimbey and Rocky Mountain House, who also have their own mental health offices. Wetaskiwin and Drayton Valley each have a mental health office and an addictions office.

Police respond to domestic dispute and break and enters Last week the Rimbey RCMP responded to 43 calls for service. The calls for service included assaults, break and enters, fraud and other property related crimes.

Car owner is responsible for drivers A 43-year-old resident of Rimbey was stopped and found to be driving with a suspended licence. He was charged and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for 30 days. The vehicle belonged to his girlfriend who knowingly allowed him to drive it while he was suspended. The girlfriend a 46-year-old resident of Rimbey was also charged for allowing this offence to happen. It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure anyone who drives their vehicle is properly licenced.

Flashback The Rimbey RCMP were called to a sudden death, however upon arriving it was found the complainant was suffering from dementia and was remembering the prior death of his brother. The elderly male was transported to the hospital for an assessment.

Woman charged in domestic dispute In the early morning hours RCMP responded to a domestic dispute. A 25-year-old woman had fled the residence after damaging walls, breaking several windows and assaulting her common-law husband with a stick.

Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident. The woman has been charged with mischief and assault with a weapon. Children Services and the Victim Services Unit are assisting on this file.

Smash and dash Shortly before 7 a.m. on Jan. 19 someone broke into the Side Street Liquor store. The suspects entered from the rear alley. If anyone saw anything suspicious at this time please contact the RCMP.

Lacombe County Council has given first reading to Bylaw No. 1172/13 and Bylaw No. 1173/13, the purpose of which are to amend the general regulations and policies in both the County’s Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Development Plan. The amendments are being proposed to provide greater clarity to the regulations and address any issues which have arisen since the adoption of the documents in 2007. Examples of some of these amendments include: addition of “city” to policy 3.10 (a)(i) clarification of the definition for front lot line; inclusion of maximum site coverage regulation for the Country Residential “RCR” District; the Country Residential Estate “R-CRE” District; and the Residential Conservation Cluster “R-RCC” District; and the addition of setbacks to the Higher Density Lakeshore Residential “R-HDLR” District.

Drag teen in B&E In another incident a Rimbey teenager is facing break and enter and breach of probation charges stemming from an early morning incident. The 17-year-old entered a residence through an unlocked door while the family was sleeping inside.

He dressed himself in clothing belonging to a female occupant and subsequently passed out.

Missing man needed a break Rimbey RCMP investigated a missing person. A 27-year-old resident of Red Deer was on a work crew that stopped at

a convenience store for refreshments. The man placed his items on the counter and said he would be right back but subsequently disappeared. He was located two days later and advised he just needed a break.

Full complement of teams at Bentley bonspiel

By June Norvila Not all bonspiels fill up these days but once again Bentley attracted a full complement of 32 teams in their recent Bentley Seniors’ Bonspiel.

There were four draws a day, only one game a day and no evening curling, which the seniors like. There were cash prizes.

In the A event, the undefeated champions were the Jim Bruns rink from Lacombe with skip Ed Rice, second Arnie MacAskill and lead Ann Rice. They defeated the Ken Brown foursome in six ends, making the Norm Crossman rink third and the Cliff Knutson team fourth.

The B event was won by Bill Samuel from Red Deer with skip Earl Carson, second Bill Edmonds and lead Nancy Carritt. The Rainy Creek Doug Culshaw team ran out of rocks in the eighth end so the Dave Neufeld team ended up third, and Dwight Homan’s team was fourth.

With the modified draw, there were two winners in the C

event. They were the Gary Sparrow team with Jim Morris, Terry Widdifield and Monna Sparrow and the Merlyn Wilson group with Gail Wilson, Clem Arnold and George Weenink. Sparrow defeated John Stol in the last end after being tied 5-5 coming home, and Wilson defeated Ralph Scarlett who he ran out of rocks in the eighth end.

The D event was played out to the fours, so there were four teams who shared the cash prizes. They were the teams of Chris Jensen, Lorne Stewart, Merle Craven, and Ken Cookson.

Rimbey seniors head for Alberta 55 plus Winter Games

By Treena Mielke More Rimbey seniors than ever before have qualified to complete provincially in the Alberta 55 plus Winter Games.

Rosella Snopek, zone 4 publicity director, said 145 competitors from zone 4 will attend the Games to be held Feb. 13 to 16 in Calgary.

This year 11 Rimbey competitors will attend the provincial meet.

“This is the most competitors sent from Rimbey,” Snopek said.

Barbara Patey, Lorraine Jarl, Bernard Wolkowski and Monty Haslam will complete in five-pin bowling in the 70 and over age group.

Patey said this will be the third time the bowling team has attended the Games. Four years ago they won gold and two years ago they missed out on the medals, placing fourth.

But when or lose, the experience is wonderful, said Patey.

“Two years ago Lorraine Jarl and I carried the flag for zone 4. It was such an honor.”

Attending the Games is an opportunity to meet people from all over, she added. “You meet like minded people. People who enjoy sports. Enjoy life.”

Brenda Restall, Vern Browne and Robert Stuart will compete in five-pin bowling in the 55 and over age category. Kay Osbaldenston also qualified but won’t be able to attend.

Browne, who has bowled for a number of years, but has not attended the Games before, is pleased to have the opportunity. “I’m very much looking forward to it.”

Anna Ledieu, Mikki Collis and Deb Retzlaff will compete in ice curling.

Gladys Wilson, who has won a gold medal and two silver medals at the Games previously, qualified for the Scrabble competition. She said she is looking forward to the event.

A roll of pennies can make a difference in Somalia

By Treena Mielke A roll of pennies, soon to be considered of no monetary value in Canada, could make the difference between hunger and starvation in Somalia.

In that famine-ravaged country, a roll of pennies can feed a child for a day.

Emily Falk, founder of BRITE (Bringing Relief and Inspiration Through Education), a chapter of The Global Enrichment Foundation, is encouraging the public to support the foundation’s Hungry for Change Penny Drive to help feed the hungry in that war torn country.

The drive is a fun and easy way to help end the hunger for children in Somalia, she said. “It’s pretty amazing a roll

of pennies can feed a child for a day.�

To make a donation, take rolled pennies to the bank, mail a cheque to the Global Enrichment Foundation or go online to Food For Hope. Donations may also be dropped off with Don Falk at Rimbey Co-op or at the Rimbey Library.

Funds raised from the penny drive will support Food for Hope, a school-based food aid program that supports more than 800 young students living in an internally displaced people’s camp outside the war-torn Somali capital of Mogadishu. Children attending the Waqaf-Dhiblawe School have survived war, famine and extreme poverty and due to food shortages, and often come to school hungry.

Through Food for Hope, the Global Enrichment Foundation, working in partnership with the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation and Hope for the Nations, will provide every student with one nutritious and supplement-packed meal per school day, helping each child build a better future for themselves and their families.

Donations of pennies to go toward food bank

By Treena Mielke Pinching pennies may be a thing of the past, but the use of any pennies still in circulation can continue to make a big difference.

Servus Credit Union has teamed up with the Rimbey Food Bank to collect pennies to help those in need.

By collecting the soon-to-be obsolete pennies for the Food Bank, Servus is doing its part to step up to the plate to help those less fortunate. “It’s a good way to give back,� said branch manager Lance Lewis. “If everybody gives back it can add up quickly. We all have a few pennies kicking around.�

Peggy Makofka, executive director of Rimbey Community Home Help Services, a registered non-profit charity, is always amazed and pleased to see how the people in the community step forward to support the food bank.

“The need for food hampers is year-round,� she said, “and every penny helps.�

She noted there is no government funding provided for the food bank, which runs under the umbrella of RCHHS, and entirely on donations.

The last penny was struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg May 4, 2012. As of Feb. 4 the mint will stop distribution of the penny. While the penny will remain legal tender for some time, the mint will turn its focus to the collection of the coins from financial institutions.

Pennies can be dropped off at the Rimbey branch at 5046-50 Ave. Pennies will be collected from Jan. 23 to March 4.

The food bank is in the basement of the Nazarene Church and its services may be accessed by calling FCSS at 403843-2030.

MILLER LauraLee Jan. 30, 1960 - Jan. 12, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a special wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, aunt, niece and friend, Laura Miller. After a courageous battle with cancer, Laura passed peacefully with her family by her side, at the Red Deer Hospice on January 12, 2013, at the age of 52.

She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 36 years, Tom, their daughters Tanya (Robert) Blades, Becky (Ian Sambrooke), grand-daughter Kassandra Blades, father Leon Brown, mother-in-law Hilda Miller and countless family and friends. Laura is pre-deceased by her mother Donna Brown, father-in-law Earl Miller, brothers-in-law Dennis Miller, and Ron Miller. There will be no funeral service at Laura’s request. A celebration of Laura’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the: Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer, Alberta T4R 3S6. Also, from the family, a very special and heartfelt thank you to all the staff at the Red Deer Hospice Society for their excellent and compassionate care, the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, Dr. Graham, Krista and to our caring Community for all their love and support.

Glenda Elaine Pogadl January 12, 1938 ~ January 22, 2013 Glenda passed away peacefully in her home at the Bethany Care Center in Sylvan Lake, AB on Tuesday, January 22, with her three daughters at her side.

Glenda was born on January 12, 1938 in Bentley, Alberta and raised on the family farm (Pierson) 1/2 mile east of Bentley.

Glenda attended and graduated from Reeves Business College in Red Deer, Alberta in 1957.

Glenda married Edward Pogadl on October 28, 1961, and together raised 3 daughters, Marlis, Marcine, and Monica while residing in Red Deer, Tees and Sylvan Lake.

Ed and Glenda celebrated 50 years of marriage before Ed’s passing in 2012.

Glenda always enjoyed working and spent her early years at the Red Deer Court House, Sylvan Lake News, and the UFA in Sylvan Lake. Glenda loved people and enjoyed any work that involved interaction with people.

Glenda loved music and played in the Ray Ferguson Band for many years. She was also a choir member and pianist at the Sylvan Lake Presbyterian Church for decades.

Glenda was very involved with all her daughter’s activities including Brownies, Girl Guides, and the Sylvan Lake Figure Skating Club.

LeRoux Jules “JB” Bernardin LeRoux of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the age of 84 years.

JB was born in St. Denis, Saskatchewan on January 21, 1929.

Throughout his life, he loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing and camping to name a few. JB also took great pleasure in gardening, and greatly enjoyed tending to his beautiful flowers. He possessed a talent for whistling and was a great singer. JB treasured his family and friends immensely, and loved to tease and bring smiles to many faces. He will be deeply missed.

JB will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Rose; his four sons, Bernie (Laurie) LeRoux of Stony Plain; George (Jo-Ann) Newbert of Calgary; Robert (Juanita) Newbert of Red Deer; and Ronald (Leticia) Newbert of Mazatlan, Mexico; and his two daughters, Wendy LeRoux of Edmonton; and Annette McBride of Spruce Grove. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by eleven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; his sister, Sally (John) Hoppe of Ottawa, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews. JB was predeceased by his parents; his son-in-law, Chris; two brothers, Stan and “X” Francois; and three sisters, Elise, Jean, and Terry.

Memorial Service details will be announced at a later date. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. McElroy It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Doris Belle McElroy. She was laid to rest in her saviours arms the morning of January 18, 2013 at the age of 89 years with her family by her side. Doris was born on April 26, 1923 in the Rimbey District (Lockhart) at her parents’ home to Paul and Clara Marie Pierson. She spent her entire life in the Leedale and Rimbey area.

She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Helen Alberta Adams, Barbara Elaine Munday, John Robert McElroy and Gary Owen McElroy. Doris was predeceased by her loving husband, Owen Jr. McElroy in 2002, a sister, Dorotha and two brothers-in-law. She is survived by one sister Lila Meyer of Villeneuve, Alberta Doris was not only a homesteader, neighbor, friend and caregiver but also contributed greatly to the compiling of family and community history, was a writer of a book outlining her own younger years and wrote a weekly news article for the Rimbey Record.

A celebration of her life was held on January 24, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre. A Private family interment service followed in the Bradshaw Cemetery at Leedale, Alberta If friends so desire, memorial contributions in memory of Doris McElroy may be made directly to Rimbey Long Term Care (Area 3).

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting of the Rimbey Senior’s Drop-In Centre will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 3:30 p.m.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Fred Glanfield of Rimbey, Alberta on Sunday January 20, 2013 in the ICU of U of A Hospital in Edmonton at the age of 85 years.

Fred was born in Garstang, Lancashire, England on September 2, 1927. He was the first son born to Fredrick and Anne Glanfield, Fred and three sisters along with their parents moved to Canada when he was two years old. They travelled on the Duchess of York, then by train to Erskine, Alberta. With a yen to own land of their own the family moved to the Hoadley-Winfield area to homestead.

Life in the Winfield hills was very hard, but Fred told stories of fun and music among the neighbourhood. Another son Oliver joined the family. Their father joined the army in the early forties, with the hope of being sent (home) to England, but he died in Ontario and never came home to see his new baby son Brian. Fred became the man of the family. Life was very hard, their mother passed away when Brian was twelve and Fred took him to live with his family.

Fred was married to Iona Nelson in 1951 and raised four children on their farm at Hoadley. Iona passed away in 1978.

Fred will be sadly missed by his loving wife Doreen, his son Rick (Dianne) Glanfield, daughters; Susan (Fred) Fawcett, Louise (Stan) Lawson and Debbie (Murray) Kreiser, his four step-children Garry (Joanne) Marek, Sharon (Ken) Le Lacheur, Melanie Quaife and Robin (Garry) Chubey, as well as eleven grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Two brothers; Oliver (May), Brian (Joan) and his sister Peggy Mann and his special friend and brother-in-law Clifford Nelson will forever treasure his memory. Fred was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Iona, and by two sisters Ruth Rauchert and Lucy Banks and by a grandson Dale Fawcett and by three brothers-in-laws; John Rauchert, Cecil Banks and Bob Mann. He also lost (his wife Doreen’s) father and mother, brother-in-law Robert Schmidt and sister-in-law Doris Schmidt.

Fred farmed in the Hoadley area for many years, and was very active in the community. He was president of the Hoadley Hall board for many years, overseeing the many improvements to the hall, the Farmers Union and was an active member in the Anglican Church. Fred was an excellent carpenter, singer and guitar player. After his marriage to Doreen they made their home in Red Deer, where Fred worked for fifteen years for Red Deer Transit. Driving was one of the greatest jobs for him. He was a kind and considerate driver as many persons on (Route 4) will remember.

Fred built a cabin on his old farm in 1986 (the old Pep place) which was the site of many happy gatherings for family and friends. After his retirement in 1993 Fred and Doreen built their dream home there and spent many happy years developing a beautiful yard and making great memories for their families. In 2002 they retired to Rimbey. Fred’s passions in life were his family, reading, crosswords and gardening. His sudden passing will leave a void in a great many lives.

A memorial service was held from the Rimbey United Church on Saturday January 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Interment of Fred’s cremated remains followed in the Hoadley Cemetery.
