Block party — The months

of June, July and August are commonly a prime time for birthday parties, graduations, and Canada Day and general social occasions among friends and neighbors. A block or neighborhood party can be a distinctive way to have a good time and share celebrations on a group level.

Who hasn’t walked or driven by a neighborhood and felt a tinge of envy when he or she came across a block party in full swing? Laughing neighbors spilled out onto front lawns, children enjoying the freedom of prancing in the street, barbecues smoking and coolers overflowing with ice and drinks are just some of the elements to assail the senses.

There’s bound to be a deejay or some amusement-type rides to complete the picture, too. Chances are the celebrations continue into the evening hours.

Although a block or street party may seem like it can simply be thrown together with a few conversations among neighbors, there is actually a good deal of planning that should go into executing a neighborhood event.

Block party basics • Refreshments: Again, homeowners may want to stock their own coolers. Though alcoholic beverages are commonly found at social events, they shouldn’t be the cornerstone of the celebration. All it takes is one inebriated individual who gets out of hand for law enforcement to close down the party. Expert tips for special occasion hair styles Special occasions and parties crop up over the course of a typical year. Be it weddings, birthday parties or anniversary galas, friends and families often gather to celebrate especially momentous events.

Part of the excitement of these events is donning formalwear or cocktail attire and enlisting the help of beauty experts to look your best for these memorable events. Experienced hair stylists and makeup artists can transform your look from basic to glam in a short amount of time, and women often rely on the professional expertise of cosmetologists to help them create the perfect party look.

Preparation and party countdown Once the decision has been made to use a professional stylist to work on your hair for a special occasion, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure success. The first step is finding a stylist with whom you will have a good rapport.Ask your regular salon stylist if he or she does special occasion work, or ask for a referral from a friend or family member who has used someone in the

past.

Avoid taking drastic measures with your hair within two to three weeks of the event. Try not to schedule a cut or colour right before the party, otherwise you may be stuck with a color or shorter cut than what you wanted.

Once you get your gown, schedule a trial run so that the stylist can walk you through different options.

Hair styles are usually based on the type of dress you are wearing, and the stylist can suggest different things. If you choose a style that requires more or longer hair, the stylist can often adjust by using temporary hair extensions that are not easily detected.

Women with short hair need not worry about having a hairstyle that looks formal and fashionable. Short hair is easy to style – use side parts and maybe some height at the crown. Using fun, stylish clips, curls, and headbands are additional ways to dress up the look.

not being ready for the stylist or using products on your hair that are not conducive to keeping the hair set.

Hair should not be washed any less than one day before the appointment. It is essential that the hair be completely dry before the stylist gets there in order to make the process run more smoothly. He or she cannot spend extra time blowdrying the hair, and if it needs to be done, it could incur an extra cost.”

It is advisable to use mousse or hair spray in the hair because they will help set the hairstyle.

Avoid the use of hair serums or frizz-fighting oils that can cause hair pins or curls not to hold well.

In most cases, a stylist will come equipped with the items he or she needs. If you have discussed any special hair accoutrements, such as rhinestones, beads or clips, have them at the ready.

It can take about an hour to do a hairstyle, and if the stylist is working with more than one person for the party, it is important to be on time for your appointment, or be home if the stylist is coming to you.

Make your Cake and Eat it too

If

you have ever watched a cooking network show and thought, “I can make a delicious, scratchmade cake with fancy decorations,”then you may be right. However, you may not need to have all of the expertise of master bakers or do everything homemade.

Many times you can create delicious meals where a portion of the ingredients are pre-packaged or pre-made. Others won’t know you took short cuts for success. The same can be said for desserts. Having a good cake recipe that can be made partially from a boxed cake mix can save you time and money when it comes to catering birthday parties, holidays and other special events that call for cake.

We Won’t Tell Cake Recipe 1 box white cake mix 1 box instant pudding mix (4 serving size) 4 large egg whites 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup sour cream 1/2 cup water 1/3 cup oil Preheat the oven as indicated on the box, generally to 350 F. Grease and flour your pans.

Mix on low for about 30 seconds until all the ingredients are incorporated. Then mix on medium speed, scraping the sides of the bowl, for 2 minutes.

Pour batter into pans and bake as directed for the size of your pan. Allow to cool before frosting.

This cake will have a good texture and is very moist. It also holds well together when cutting.

To make the recipe even more special, experiment with fillings between layers before frosting.

- Make your own “custard”by mixing a package of vanilla or chocolate instant pudding with a pint of heavy cream. Blend until thickened and then refrigerate.

- Use your favorite flavor fruit jam, which you thin out by heating and adding a little water to spread between layers. Add chunks of fresh fruit for extra appeal.

- Whip up a batch of homemade whipped cream or meringue.

- Make your own chocolate ganache. Simply melt chocolate chips or baking chocolate over a double-boiler or in the microwave until just melted. Fold in heavy cream.

Zebra cakes - This will replace the marble cake for 2013. Endless mixtures will be created.

Eclairs - The cupcake of Paris. The more glamorously decorated the better.
