Mom, son commended for catching thief
An Abbotsford mother and son have been honoured for their efforts in capturing a thief last September. Matteo Rossit-Lavigne and Angelina Rossit received a commendation from the Abbotsford Police Board last Tuesday for the incident on Sept. 24. At about 1 a.m. that day, Matteo heard noises coming from a pickup truck parked in the driveway below his bedroom window. He looked out the window and saw a man rum-
maging through the inside of the vehicle. Matteo yelled at the thief, then quickly dressed and alerted his mom. The pair ran outside and yelled at the man, who fled from the vehicle. As Angelina called 911, Matteo chased the suspect and caught up to him. The pair struggled, and Matteo brought him to the front lawn of the home, where he restrained him until police arrived. The man was arrested and is now before the courts on several charges.

As one of the friendliest cities this side of the Fraser River, we look forward to welcoming athletes from across the province.” The city has budgeted $60,000 ($30,000 in both 2015 and 2016) and $50,000 in additional in-kind services and facilities to host the games. The 2008 games in Kelowna generated an estimated $2.6 million in economic benefit. Mark Taylor, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, said the economic spinoff could be

Up in flames
Two house fires took place in Abbotsford on Sunday morning, and neither residence had working smoke alarms, according to Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS). Firefighters responded to the first incident at about 6:30 a.m. at 28412 River Rd. Fire crews arrived to find a mobile home fully engulfed in flames. The two occupants were awakened by the sound of crackling and discovered that a blaze had started by their wood-fired stove. They attempted to put out the flames, but the fire quickly spread. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, but the mobile home was destroyed. The second fire occurred at 7:45 a.m. at 33562 Clayburn Rd. When fire crews arrived, the single-storey home was engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. The resident had awakened to the sound of glass breaking, and fire and smoke in the home forced the person to escape out a window. The occupant was taken to hospital for treatment of exposure to smoke. Damage to the home was estimated at $75,000. Neither fire is considered suspicious.

Longtime Abbotsford councillor Moe Gill was considered one of the favourites to run for the Liberals in the riding of AbbotsfordSouth, which became vacant when MLA John van Dongen left the party. Convicted online predator Jeffrey Goddard of Abbotsford admitted he was unable to manage his behaviour and was at risk of re-offending if he owned a cellphone. The statements, made to his probation officer, were included in a pre-sentence report referenced by Judge Brent Hoy on Thursday in Abbotsford provincial court. Hoy sentenced Goddard, 22, to 180 days in prison for his latest set of charges – two breaches of probation, to which he previously pleaded guilty.

Ian MacDonald said a woman reported to the Abbotsford Police Department on Tuesday that the money had gone missing and was believed to be in the pocket of her husband’s jeans, which were among items she had
donated to charity. The clothing, which was placed on the couple’s doorstep, was picked up by the charity on Jan. 5. MacDonald said the pair run a legitimate business, and it’s common for the husband to carry large sums of cash. The woman had not checked the pocket of the jeans when she set them aside for the donation. The couple phoned the charity, and discovered that items
collected in their neighbourhood on that day and time had been distributed to a resale store in another community. The woman then went to police, who called the store on her behalf. A staff member there confirmed that the cash had been located in the sorting area, and was set aside in hopes that the owner would come forward. MacDonald said the incident clearly fits the descriptions of “honesty” and “integrity.”

Questioning the status quo After four and a half years of service, former city manager Frank Pizzuto abruptly tendered his resignation in midDecember. No reasons were given, and Mayor Bruce Banman said he was “surprised” by the timing. It took a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by The News for the other penny to drop. According to a document eventually provided by city hall, Pizzuto received a payment of $321,000 upon his departure, including a year of salary, holiday time, and other benefits. How is it that a city executive earning nearly $250,000 annually would be paid such a grand sum if he made the decision to leave? It’s a good question, asked by many. The answer is relatively straightforward. The payout was a condition of his contract, agreed to by the city when he was hired. These scenarios are not unusual, much to the chagrin of irked taxpayers.
It is common for top civil administrators to be granted such lofty annual sums, and golden parachutes in their contracts. And the common answer as to “why,” is that in order to attract the best candidates for the job, such payouts must be conditions of employment, competitive with the corporate world. Whether that is actually true is the bigger question for the public, who are footing the bills. We’d like to see a city put the status quo to the test, both in terms of salary levels and departure perks for public servants. And if this really is entrenched bureaucratic culture, it would be in the public interest to see if it can be changed. Why do governments simply pony up the bucks, without ever seeming to question if it’s realistic and reasonable? Meanwhile, in Abbotsford, a new city manager has already been chosen and announced. Local taxpayers are entitled to know the details of his remuneration. And it shouldn’t require an FOI to get them.

Local residents Gerda and Richard Peachey are ever-present voices on morality issues in this city, including the Taboo sex show at Tradex, and the nowLegends league of female football players who wear skimpy uniforms as part of the marketing appeal. There’s a wide range of public opinion on this league, which was hosted in the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre for several games last year. Is it exploitative of women, or empowering? Is it sport or entertainment? Is the clothing comparable to that worn by women playing beach volleyball? If so, does that make it OK? Depends on who you ask, and if they actually care. It’s very clear for those who share the Peacheys’ position. They are entirely free to hold and share their perspective, but is it the measure of community standards in Abbotsford for all others? No thanks. Based on the very muted level of opposition to the lingerie ladies of football in this city, and attendance at their games, it would seem there is a much higher level of tolerance here for what is offensive, what is not, and the latitude extended to individuals to make those choices, even if it does involve a public facility. Does city hall have a responsibility to consider the activities and events it endorses? Certainly, on a case by case basis. They’ve done so in the past, and as we’ve seen, consensus is often elusive. Can a “policy” be applied that neatly provides guidelines to city staff, in all instances, clear of ambiguity and interpretation? Not a chance. Advice to council: This isn’t going down a slippery slope. It’s a freefall in endless debate. Let your constituents ponder the moral enigma of booty shorts in the AESC. We need you concentrating on other matters of greater importance, such as taxpayers’ money.

letters Preying upon ignorance As a communications specialist for two large energy corporations, may I compliment Jeff Nagel on his article, “Trans Mountain pipeline plan grows” (News, Jan. 15). However, I find myself somewhat bemused with the claim by Christianne Wilhelmson, executive director of the Georgia Strait Alliance, that “Kinder Morgan may see support among its industry partners but predicts solid opposition among B.C. residents.” I realize that Wilhelmson has a master’s degree in ecology from UBC, but did not know she was a marketing research guru who can tell how the residents of B.C., once properly informed as to the benefits and drawbacks of energy-related projects such as Enbridge, Kinder Morgan or LNG proposals for the Kitimat area, will indicate their support or lack of it. Does she have a 200-person call centre like the B.C. Liberal Party does, where paid staff can phone everyone, say in Vernon in two nights, in order to gain insights into their thoughts on issues pertaining to the upcoming election with a very, very high degree of accuracy? I think not. Grandiose statements such as hers only go to further public opinion that
these “professional” protesters are nothing more than disgruntled individuals who really don’t know how to bring about change in any domain – social, political or economic – but can prey upon the ignorance of the many and cause them undue anguish and fear. And they think, like the members of the Idle No More movement, that media attention will further their cause and bring about the changes that they are seeking. Far, far, far from it. As for the risks involved, which her group does not assess in the same way, or by using the same criteria as hundreds of experts in oil transmission and tanker transport would use, what credentials does she or any member of her group have in risk assessment in any field let alone one such as this? And, please, do not think that statements by politicians about the risks involved have any element of intelligence or insight to them. Their only risk assessment is how the benignly ignorant electorate will vote in the next municipal or provincial election. Perhaps the Abbotsford News should Xerox copies of columnist Mark Rushton’s On The Other Hand, “Done with care, we can have it both ways”, about

Re: Trees make way for new church I spent most of my school days in this Townline Road area, and the devastation I see as I walk with my children to Gardner Park is, to say the least, unbelievably ugly. Just a mangled mass of broken branches and uprooted huge stumps are all that is left of more than a dozen beautiful trees. Nature cannot recover fast enough from man’s destruction for the babies of today to see the trees of this stature return in 70 years. What are we leaving for them? Who in authoritative positions will be brave enough to open their eyes to what we are all losing? Think of the recognition and admiration that would be showered on city planners and builders who dared to have the conscience to build around existing towering trees such as these that were simply in the way of a parking lot and a new church building. temporary practices, the beautiful designs that were created represent something of personal importance to the maker or wearer and a reflection of the beauty of the spirit and the natural world. The next session, on Saturday, Feb. 7 features Punjabi Phulkari, a traditional pattern of weaving in Punjab. It is an embroidery technique literally meaning “flower working”. Later this form of embroidery became restricted to embroidered shawls and head scarfs for everyday use called “phulkaris.” These are worn by women all over the Punjab during marriage festivals and other joyous occasions. Traditionally they were not sold at markets but were purely a domestic folk art that satisfied creativity and brought colour into the day. Chinese callig-
raphy is the way/ method/law of writing. Chinese calligraphy is normally regarded as one of the “arts” in the countries where it is practiced and where it originated. Chinese calligraphy emphasizes motion and is charged with dynamic life. Japanese origami is a traditional activity where a single square of paper is folded in different ways to create shapes like animals and beautiful plants. In Japanese the words “oru” (folding) and “kami” (paper) form the origin of the word origami. This art form has become part of the cultural heritage of Japan. Churches host youth sex talks Local youth are invited to talk about sex, dating, pornography, relationships and more during a program taking place every Sunday night in February. Various churches will work alongside Columbia Bible College (CBC) to present speakers, and music by local bands. The program starts at 7:30 p.m. in the CBC gym (2940 Clearbrook Rd.). Throughout the sessions, there will be opportunities for participants to ask questions and talk about sex and relationships.
Pastor Jon Wiebe of South Abbotsford Church said questions that will be addressed include: “What’s the big deal with having sex before you’re married?” and “Is looking at porn really that bad?” “I believe that the church has relevant things to say on the topic of sex and relationships,” Wiebe said. “MTV and the Internet shouldn’t be the only places for youth and young adults to turn to for advice on sex.” For more information, visit youthtalksex.com.

Adam Hadwin’s first PGA Tour event of the season was quite a roller-coaster ride. After earning a spot in the field for the $6.1 million Farmers Insurance Open with a scorching 11-birdie performance during Monday qualifying, Hadwin took up residence on the first page of the leaderboard during Thursday’s opening round at Torrey Pines in San Diego. He put together a terrific sixunder 66 and was tied for third, one back of co-leaders Brandt Snedeker and K.J. Choi. The 25-year-old Abbotsford

ENNS John Henry April 28, 1918 ~ Jan. 22, 2013
DYKSTRA Jantje Jantje (Jannie) Dykstra late of Abbotsford, British Columbia, died and passed into the presence of her Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 95 years of age. Jannie Dykstra was born at St. Pancras, The Netherlands on November 26, 1917 and came to Canada in 1953. Jannie Dykstra is survived by nine children, 27 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. One child predeceased her in 1945. Her husband, John predeceased her in 1998. Jannie dedicated her life to Jesus and to the followers of Jesus, his church. She devoted her life to the care, support and the pleasure of the company of her husband John whom she loved. Throughout her life and especially when raising her children, she loved, supported, encouraged them and promoted the advancement in life of her children with selfless devotion. One of many enjoyments in life for Jannie was choral music both as a member of various choirs and as a listener to choral music. She enjoyed singing and often expressed her emotions in song. The internment will take place with family members in attendance on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Hazelwood Cemetery in Abbotsford, British Columbia. A Memorial Service for Jannie following the internment will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Christian Reformed Church, located at 3215 Trethewey St., Abbotsford, British Columbia. John H. Enns was born to Margaret (nee Klippenstein) and Henry A. Enns on April 28, 1918 in a village in the Slavgorod Colony in Siberia Russia. John was the sixth of eleven children. The outlook for a future in Russia was not promising and so the family, in October 1926 emigrated from Russia and set sail for Canada, settling in Zeneta Saskatchewan for 3 years and then moving on to Yarrow, BC on February 20, 1929. John attended school in Yarrow, then went on to attend Prairie Bible Institute in 1939 but as Canada entered the war in 1940 he was called up to serve his country. John chose alternative service over direct participation in the war effort. In 1942 during his time in ‘service’, he married Elizabeth Fast. Upon his release, John and Elizabeth resided in Vancouver where John worked at a fruit wholesaler and during this time 4 children were welcomed into the family. Country life was considered more suitable to raising a family and so in 1951 the family of 6 moved on to 5 acres on Sumas Prairie. During this time John found work closer to home and eventually was able to work for his brother and brother-in-law in building construction. In 1955 John became a partner in the business and in 1957 built his first apartment block (which became his stock in trade). A move in 1954 to Abbotsford was prompted by the desire to be part of a broader community (and also a recognition that he and Elizabeth were not farmers). Two more children were added to the family, one in 1958 and one in 1960. John was a busy man with a large family, a business to run and significant involvement at Central Heights Church. John experienced much satisfaction in being able to offer his expertise in the construction of various charitable projects. He retired at age 67 (as he promised he would) and together with Elizabeth they enjoyed a retirement of travel, reading and helping others. John died on January 22 at The Menno Hospital. He was predeceased by wife Elizabeth but will be missed by daughters Grace (Dave Mossop), Luella, Florence (Gary Green), and Elizabeth (Betsy); by sons Edwin and James and by grandchildren and great grandchildren. A remembering service will be held at Cascade Community Church at 35190 Delair Rd. in Abbotsford on Feb. 1, 2013 at 12:00 PM.
EPP, Chris It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of Chris Epp on January 24, 2013. Jonathan Christopher Epp was born in Swan River, Manitoba on October 1, 1958. He moved to Red Deer Alberta, then to Abbotsford BC and eventually settling in Penticton. Chris was predeceased by his mother, Mabel Epp and infant brother, Brian Epp. He is survived by his father Erdman Epp, sister Brenda Yirka (family David, Carmen and Catherine), brother James Epp (family Vanessa, Michael, David and Timothy), his son, Jim McKitrick (family Veronica and Rosemary); his daughter Bridget Gillberg (family Mike, Adam, Emma and Logan), the mother of Jim & Bridget, Marianne Conci, and MacTavish, his beloved pet. Chris was an innovative entrepreneur in the RV manufacturing and RV retail industry for most of his life. He was loved and respected by those he worked with due to the integrity displayed in all of life’s circumstances. Throughout his life, he enjoyed numerous outdoor activities with family and friends. Chris had a great sense of humor and lived life to the full. His devotion to family, his hope in Jesus and his love of worship were apparent to all who knew and loved him. Chris will be truly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris’s memory can be made to the Abbotsford Hospice Society at 33134 Marshall Rd Abbotsford, BC V2S 1K5 or Penticton Hospice Society at 1701 Government St, Penticton, BC V2A 8J7. Alice’s family gives thanks for the life of a beloved mother, sister, grandmother and greatgrandmother. Survived by children Jean (Ron Tuttle), Marion (Len Kozier) and Doug (Marian Lines), and grandchildren Don, Doug, Julie, David, Carol, Katya, Daniel and great-grandchildren, Mark, Erik, Matthew, Andrew, Charlie, Ellen, Tessa, Amalie, Elise and Avery; dear sister Jean Silk and many nephews and nieces. Alice was born and raised in Fort Langley, BC. She attended Vancouver Normal School and began her teaching career in a one room school in Glenwood. She married Mark Holloway in 1941 and continued to teach while Mark was in the Air Force. After having three children Alice taught school in Richmond and studied at UBC obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree. She valued education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to strive. She retired in 1976 and moved to Abbotsford. Mark passed away in 1981. Alice was an active member of Trinity Memorial United Church, the Retired Teachers’ Bridge Club, W.H.O. Club, University Women’s Club and became an accomplished oil painter. She enjoyed many bus trips and cruises with family and friends. In 2011 Alice moved to Penticton to be closer to her family. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, April 20 at 2:00 pm with reception to follow at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way, Abbotsford, BC. Realtor and Community Advocate Barbara Ellen Wightman passed peacefully into the sweet presence of her Lord on Tuesday January 22, 2013 at the age of 83. She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Rev. Ross Wightman, four daughters, Gail Wightman, Donna Lou (Rick) Gilbert, Elaine Bergen, and Rosslyn (David) Delmonico; 18 grandchildren and 18 greats; sister, Corinne Torrence, brother, Grantly Douglas, brother-in-law, Donald Wightman (Calgary), nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were like family. Her deep love of life and her pursuit of adventure put a sparkle in her eyes and endeared her to many. There will be a Celebration of Barbara Wightman’s life at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2:00 pm.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN REQUEST FOR A NEW FACILITY AUTHORIZATION Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Inc. has filed an application with the Fraser Valley Regional District for a facility authorization at 5050 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford, BC V4X 1X8.
Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Inc., proposes to build and operate a facility that will handle sort and process green waste, yard waste, food waste, commercial organics and select agricultural wastes. The facility will be operated on an impermeable surface and will comply with all components of the Organic Matter Recycling Regulation of BC (OMRR). Materials will be received inside of a building and preprocessed before being placed under the Gore Cover Membrane which will be used to control odors and accelerate the decomposition process. The use of this technology allows for the destruction of all weed seeds and ensures that compost produced is only of the highest Class “A” quality. Our building will also have the secondary protection of a bio-filter to ensure that no odors from the facility impact our neighbors.
