Vancouverites are planking like mad at the new Science World exhibit, KEVA Planks, on now through March 15. You won’t see folks lying down facedown with arms stiffly at their sides; you will see adults and kids building incredible structures out of simple 4.5-inch maple wood planks. The planks are precision cut and gravity keeps them together. The tallest KEVA tower ever built was 51 feet, 8 inches – built at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. Science World (1455 Quebec Street) currently has 15,000 KEVA planks in action. Kids and parents can grab a set and get to work on their own creations.

Buckman Coe, one of the city’s most loved unsigned artists, is starting his cross-Canada tour with a CD release in his own backyard. Crow’s Nest, a soulful 5-song EP featuring 25 minutes of new material, is a follow-up to 2012’s lauded full-length, By The Mountain’s Feet. It continues Buckman’s dedication to using his music as a form of activism — uplifting and informing through music and art. Think David Suzuki in studio with Stevie Wonder and Ben Harper (which we’d like to see any day). Buckman will be touring the new material alongside his more well-worn grooves. In addition to playing a killer set of Americana, sun-sweet folk, sundrenched reggae, soul and funk, Buckman will be screening Groundswell, a mini-documentary produced by the Raincoast Conservation Foundation addressing the issue of the Enbridge Pipeline project in Western Canada. Maritime Museum’s speakers for the bucket-list seafarer Ever wondered what it might be like to circumnavigate the globe? Always dreamed of selling up and setting sail? The Vancouver Maritime Museum is presenting a five-part Friday evening speaker series on ocean cruising adventures and inspirational storytelling. A

manda Tapping is probably one of the most gracious women in show business — and her unwavering integrity nearly cost her the biggest break of her career.

The year was 1997, and Tapping was newly arrived in Vancouver to film the pilot for Stargate SG-1, the highly anticipated television spinoff of the 1994 blockbuster film.

The British-born, Toronto-raised thespian had been cast in the pivotal role of Samantha ‘Sam’ Carter, a brilliant astrophysicist and USAF captain who would serve shoulder to shoulder with a team of equally gifted men.

Tapping was eager to sink her teeth into this dynamic character.

For years, she’d guest-starred on shows such as The X-Files, Due South, and Street Legal; she was hungry to take her career to the next level, and knew full well that Stargate SG-1 could do just that.

But then Tapping arrived for her wardrobe fitting and laid eyes upon the uniform that her character was expected to wear: a push-up bra and a provocative, low-cut tank top. “I was devastated,” Tapping says. “It was my first really big break so I was very aware of the fact that they could fire my ass at any moment, but I burst into tears and said, ‘I can’t.

I’m sorry, but I won’t do this.’ And I said, ‘You can tell them to come down and talk to me about it, but [Sam’s] in the military.’ I was fiercely proud of the military aspect of it, of being true to women in the military, and having big boobs and a low-cut tank top, well, it’s not being honest. It was very disrespectful.”

But the various network/studio powers-that-be who’d pushed for a sexualized Sam Carter (Tapping won’t name names) didn’t push back, and over the course of 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 — not to mention several spin-offs and movies — Carter dressed in uniforms befitting her position, and Tapping carved out her place as a sci-fi icon.

Her emphatic refusal to compromise her integrity is but one example of the grace with which Tapping — also widely known for her role as the enigmatic Dr. Helen Magnus on Sanctuary — operates.

“Grace is my favourite word,” says Tapping, 47. It’s a word that Tapping repeats numerous times over the course of an interview conducted in the lobby lounge of a downtown Vancouver hotel.

Currently, the fan-dubbed “Queen of Sci-Fi” is in the midst of a transition phase. Tapping’s most recent series, Sanctuary, had been her passion project. Sanctuary began on the web in 2007; the early webisodes were sold directly to viewers via the series’ website.

“We were never afraid to say, ‘Let’s try it!’” says Tapping, who was one of its earliest investors. “And that kind of became our can-do attitude, like ‘It’s never been done before? Great! Let’s do it!’”

By 2008, Sanctuary had found a home on the SyFy network, and Tapping was both its star and one of its executive producers.

Despite its legions of diehard fans, Sanctuary was cancelled in 2012. For the first time in 15 years, Tapping isn’t a regular on a series. “It’s funny because I’ve

Tapping into grace Sci-fi icon Amanda Tapping is getting to know herself all over again always known what’s coming up, and now I don’t, and I’m sort of enjoying the not knowing, but also hating the not knowing,” she said. “I’ve really had to discover who Amanda Tapping is outside of being on a TV series.”

This discovery process has led Tapping right to the director’s chair. In 2012, Tapping directed several episodes of Primeval: New World, and an episode of CBC’s top-rated action-adventure drama, Arctic Air, scheduled to air later this spring. “When Arctic Air came along, I was at a bit of a crisis of confidence,” says Tapping. “When I finished Arctic Air, I could not have been happier. It restored a passion that I have for this industry, and it restored a huge amount of confidence that I felt I’d lost.”

Her grace is evident in her directing. When casting a show, Tapping says she never loses sight of the fact that many actors struggle with insecurity before, during and after their auditions. “First thing I say is, ‘thank you so much for coming, and let’s see what you’ve got,’” she says. On set, she’d rather collaborate with cast and crew than bark out orders.

But don’t count Tapping out as an actor just yet. “I love directing and I will continue to hone those skills… but I’m not ready to not

be an actor, because I love it,” she says. “It’s funny because I auditioned in the same room that I’d recently been casting [Arctic Air] out of… I was like, ‘This is messing with my head!’”

One thing that keeps her level is her charity work. Tapping is one of the co-founders of Sanctuary for Kids. Its mandate: to improve the lives of children in crisis. Locally, the foundation works with Watari, which transitions homeless youth — including those with children of their own — into housing and new lives. The money comes from online fundraising, as well as the auctions and raffles that take place at GABIT, a convention for dedicated Amanda Tapping fans held annually in England. “[Every] year I bawl like a baby because I can’t believe we’ve raised as much money as we have,” says Tapping. Since November 2009, Sanctuary for Kids has raised more than $455,000 for its charities.

To many fans, Tapping is a role model — a fact that she regards with humility. “The characters [I portray] are role models but I’m not solely responsible for them, but when it’s Amanda that’s the role model, I’m like, ‘whoa, you have a responsibility to be honest,’” she says.

Her voice is thick with emotion

when she speaks about her own role models: her grandmother, who “didn’t take shit from anybody” and lived well past 103; her friend Cynthia Semon, who Tapping described as the epitome of grace as she battled the cancer that eventually took her life; the children she’s encountered through her charity work. “[Then there are] fans that I’ve met who have struggled even just to make it to a convention, who have overcome anxiety issues just to come and donate money,” said Tapping. “Those are the role models.”

Somewhere between meeting fans, philanthropy, acting and directing, Tapping is getting to know herself all over again. She’s tubing on Cypress with her husband and seven-year-old daughter. She’s heading out on long drives. She’s bending her body into yoga poses.

If Tapping has learned anything from the past year, it’s that many of life’s bumps can be soothed with grace. “[We’re] all fallible, crazy little beings and the best you can hope for is that people feel like you’ve respected them and been honest with them,” she says. “It feels good when you try to put good out there. It sounds so hokey, and I don’t mean it to, but if you want people to like you, then you’ve got to be likeable.”

manda Tapping has tackled numerous roles over the course of her storied career, but it’s her long-running turns as Samantha ‘Sam’ Carter on Stargate SG-1 (and its spin-offs) and Dr. Helen Magnus on Sanctuary that cemented her status as the Queen of Sci-fi TV. Sam Carter was an astrophysicist, soldier, and member of SG-1, an elite team that guarded and studied the ancient alien interstellar travel devices known as Stargates (and also liaised with whatever alien species travelled through them, be they friendly or hostile).

“Even though they tried to play up the sexual tension between Carter and O’Neill [portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson], which was fun and frivolous to play and quite joyful, really, but at the heart of it was this incredibly strong, loyal, smart woman, and I was so proud of her,” says Tapping. “And I was proud of how they transitioned her. She never compromised her belief system and she never compromised herself as a person or as a woman, and yet she was still this incredible woman.”

Over in another universe, Dr. Helen Magnus was a scientist and head of the Sanctuary network, a globe-spanning organization dedicated to the protection of Abnormals (think Bigfoot, vampires, werewolves, giant snakes and lizard people).

Equally adept at performing delicate surgery and kicking indelicate ass, Magnus was also literally ageless: at the beginning of the series, she was 157 years old.

“I’m just so passionate about her, because she’s so unique,” says Tapping. “There is no other character like her, and I never always understood her. There were times where I’d be, ‘I wouldn’t do that... oh, it’s not you, Amanda, it’s Helen. She would.’”

But don’t expect Tapping to pick a favourite between the two characters that made her an icon.

“I think Helen is more me now, and Sam was me then. I felt very connected to Sam Carter at that stage of my life, and as I came into my own as a woman, she came into her own, and I feel like we grew up together, and now that I sort of have a different perspective, I love Helen,” says Tapping. “I don’t know that I could go back and play Sam Carter. She’d be a very different Sam Carter. She’d have a bit more of an edge, I think, whereas I was ready to play Helen.”

Tudors actor finds his voice

You get a lot under your belt with your first record. And, I had a great producer who’s sold 15 million records,” he adds, referring to Warne Livesey, who’s previously collaborated with 54-40, Midnight Oil and Matthew Good. “He and I work together very well. It felt like it was meant to be.”

It was a series of profound changes involving those closest to him that inspired the 10 songs on the vocal-heavy, heartfelt record. “I had a lot of stuff happen with family in the years that I was writing it. I had some people born... I had some people die...” he shares. “That really puts what’s important in perspective. All of the songs came very naturally out of that.”

Hildreth also credits his family with molding him into the “pursuer of joy (and) agent of peace” that he identifies himself as on his Twitter profile. Growing up with maternal grandparents who were both born deaf, Hildreth not only learned the value of physical expressiveness (which he’s since applied to his stage and screen appearances) but also resilience of spirit. “My grandparents were joyful, grounded and had the best sense of humour of anyone I’ve ever known,” he says. “I think I learned a lot of strength from that.”

In turn, he’s discovered how to apply the skills demanded of an actor to his songwriting. Just as preparing for a role requires viewing a character from different perspectives, penning personal lyrics requires some rigorous self-examination. “I feel that everything I do in my life is all about that. It’s all about self-discovery,” he says. “The only

hanks to recurring roles on television series such as V and The Tudors, Vancouver-born actor Mark Hildreth will likely be a familiar face to many readers. However, it’s the slightly more anonymous efforts on his résumé that Hildreth credits with giving him the confidence required to pursue his other passion: singing.

At the age of 10, he was cast as the voice of Beany in the revamped Beany and Cecil cartoon series. This opened dozens of doors for Hildreth, who has lent his vocal talents to scores of animated projects in the ensuing two-and-a-half decades. And while there wouldn’t necessarily seem to be a strong correlation between voicing the villainous Lotor on Voltron Force and crooning “Earth is a Place for Love” on his sophomore record, Signs of Life, Hildreth insists that this is in fact the case.

“There are not a lot of singers who have been in the studio since they were 10 years old,” insists Hildreth, who now spends much of his time in Los Angeles. “Now, when I go and record, it just feels like home when I put those headphones on. It feels so familiar and has a sort of magic for me. I think that’s because I had the opportunity to do that so long ago.”

It’s perhaps due to this familiarity that Signs of Life managed to escape the dreaded “difficult second album” designation. “I felt the second record was easier than the first.

He concludes, “It seems like that’s the most noble thing you can do as an artist.”

ranted Clothing is expanding into international markets with its modern spin on classic Canadiana. Sibling duo Minoru and Ai Hirano have updated the bulky wool Canadian sweater with a slimmer silhouette and hip, contemporary graphics. The only thing they haven’t modified is the production method.

“We use a traditional knitting style called intarsia,” says Minoru Hirano, co-founder of the Richmond-based company.

“All our sweaters are handmade by knitters throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. That’s one knitter and two knitting needles per sweater.”

Newbie Ancient Grains

In the effort to source everything locally, chefs are turning away from grains such as Italian risotto and quinoa toward farro, which they can get from farms on Salt Spring Island and in the nearby Fraser Valley. Farro is a wheat berry that refers to different wheat species depending on the location of where it’s grown, although occasionally it refers to barley.

For Dine Out, Wildebeest has a farro “risotto” with caramelized celeriac and turnips. “We cook based on the ingredients we have available, and we hope to define a West Coast cuisine in the process,” says Blumenthal. Meanwhile, over at Forage, you’ll find a hearty wild and cultivated mushroom wheat berry “cassoulet.”

Executive chef Chris Whittaker is a hunter and fisherman who isn’t afraid of using less appreciated inputs. The $28 Forage Dine Out menu boasts an easy-to-love spot prawn chowder with soft-poached quail egg and crispy pork rind chicharrón, alongside exotic options such as rich game terrine and Provider salmon with a red wine-balsam fir cure and BC kelp pasta.

Vegetables have stolen the spotlight from meat. You’ll find more veggie entrées than ever on the 2013 Dine Out menus. Even Gastown’s latest nose-to-tail restaurant Wildebeest is getting creative with veggies.

“We like to use vegetables to do something inventive with our dessert course,” says sous chef Josh Blumenthal. The lemon cake on their $38 menu comes with a delicate parnsip and white chocolate mousse. “We cook the parsnip in vanilla syrup to take on a sweet, aromatic note while keeping the nutty elements.”

T

he other day I was tasting some wines around noon at my Gastown office, spitting of course, when the hunger pangs started rumbling. While there’s an embarrassment of options in the neighbourhood, I hit up my biggest constant.

I find myself strolling up to The Juice Truck to pick up a Culver City Salad about two or three times a week because they’re just so damn delicious. An ever-changing explosion of flavour, that particular day’s edition was jam-packed with kale, chard, spinach, mixed greens, quinoa, chickpeas, yam, chopped cabbage, celery, cauliflower, shredded carrot, beet, zucchini, sunflower seeds, avocado and creamy chipotle dressing. As an aside, if you haven’t had one, you must. (You can also track ‘em down elsewhere via CulverCitySalads.com).

Anyway....

Upon returning to the office, there was still a little Riesling in my glass and, well, it IS my job to explore food-and-wine-pairing opportunities, right? The spontaneous match was incredible, leading me to dream of a day when you can not only dive into delightful food-truck goodness around town, but get a little pour of the good stuff to go with it. A guy can dream.

But then I thought there are those who do pick up street food on their way to a friend’s place, or take it back to the office on what could be a very casual Friday! The least I could do is offer potential pairing suggestions to those who may be so inclined. I guess the only thing I wouldn’t suggest is pouring some wine in advance into some sort of unassuming vessel like a coffee thermos to take with you when visiting your favourite food cart, because that would be illegal and never, ever recommended.

Were you to explore those previous options though, here are a few splashes that’d do some downtown Vancouver street food favourites no harm.

The Juice Truck, Abbott & Water, Monday - Friday, 11:30am to 5pm This is where the whole hare-brained scheme started, and it was from a Culver City Salad being washed down with Germany’s Selbach 2011 ‘Fish Label’ Riesling ($15.95, BC Liquor Stores).

The citrusy cheer livened up all those veggies and the off-dry honeyed finish balanced out that kiss of chipotle heat wonderfully.

Haunting, creepy but could have been more MAMA

Starring Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Directed by Andy Muschietti Expanding his short film into a featurelength ghost story, Andy Muschietti manufactures enough uncanny creepiness to keep viewers either rapt or rattled. However, upon exiting the theatre, the film’s most haunting element is the lingering sense that it represents a missed opportunity.

Unfortunately, Muschietti’s skills with pristine visuals and rich atmospherics are counterbalanced by a glaring lack of focus on his characters and graceless plotting.

Consequently, Mama makes for an occasionally frustrating modern fairy tale rather than a top-flight piece of supernatural storytelling.

Our introduction to Annabel (Jessica Chastain) comes as the tattooed bassist is expressing relief over a negative pregnancy test.

But what good are apprehensions in a film if they’re not to be tested? Sure enough, she and her illustrator boyfriend Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) are soon assigned custody of his troubled young nieces. Abandoned in a cabin for five years after their parents’ deaths, the feral Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lilly (Isabelle Nélisse) skitter about on all fours and mutter one name: Mama (Javier Botet), the tormented wrath who raised them and now has little intention of letting them go.

After waffling on whether he should explore Annabel’s anxieties further or delve into Lucas’ guilt over his brother’s sins, Muschietti instead mounts a ludicrous subplot in which a child psychologist (Daniel Kash) investigates Mama’s origins. Severely

overestimating the emotional impact of these convoluted revelations, Muschietti also forsakes the simplicity and immediacy that power his film’s most chilling sequences.
