30-year restoration nets show-winning ‘32 Ford pickup Del Basaraba was 18 years old in 1971 and working six days a week loading box cars at a Williams Lake sawmill when he was smitten. He was heading to a ALYN EDWARDS fast food restaurant for CLASSIC his lunch break when RIDES he spotted a pickup truck and a car trailer carrying three old vehicles: a 1931 Ford Victoria, a 1933 Ford five-window coupe and a 1932 Ford pickup truck. One look at that old pickup and he knew he had to have it. Del met Joe Astleford from Bella Coola who had parked his rig in the gas station for exposure because he wanted to sell the vintage vehicles. Del Basaraba paid $1,600 for this well-used 1932 Ford pickup truck in 1971. It had been owned by the Riske Creek Cattle Company.
fenders and a rusty box. But Del didn’t balk at the $1,600 asking price and went straight to his bank. He was amazed to get a loan for the full amount without putting up any collateral and the pickup was his. Del had grown up an hour from the north central B.C. community of Williams Lake beside his father’s sawmills. He attended a country grade school built by his father for the children of his workers which was just a few steps from the family home. Later, the family moved half way closer to town as Del and his older brother started high school. One day his brother was driving Del to school in his 1952 Ford convertible when he lost control, left the road and hit a stump, totalling the car. Del was 14 when he bought a 1953 Ford sedan and completely restored it using the engine from his brother’s wrecked car. “None of the young teenagers had licenses in those days,” he recalls. “I used to park my car on the edge of town and walk where I wanted to go. When we took my car to Vancouver, older friends with licenses would drive.”
The year after buying the 1932 Ford pickup, Del married Claudine Weil. “She worked in the mill office and one of my friends bet me $20 that she wouldn’t go out with me,” Del says. The teenage couple pooled their money to order a new propane tank truck which launched their propane delivery business. As the years passed, the business prospered and grew. The couple celebrated the birth of two daughters who would ride in the back of the old pickup during parades through Williams Lake. But storing the old Ford truck under a tarp at the propane company’s yard would nearly cause the truck’s demise. Sparks from a burn barrel ignited the tarp and, before Del and his employees could put the fire out, the front of the pickup had been consumed. “In some ways, that was the best thing that could have happened,” he says. “It got me going on the restoration.” But there were several false starts with a series mechanics that did little more than take the truck apart and lose valuable parts which caused the project to stall for years. In 1996, one of the mechanics working in the propane company truck maintenance shop took a shine to the pile of rusty remains and helped Del tackle the restoration. Curt Hoffman proved to be the catalyst to move the restoration forward. Everything was disassembled to the smallest pieces, including the original frame. The restoration literally began from the ground up starting with riveting the frame back together. When the propane business was sold in 2007, Del and Claudine moved to Kamloops intent on finally completing the restoration of the truck. “It is very rare to see a 1932 Ford pickup truck restored to its original condition” –Del Basaraba In 1932, the Ford Motor Company introduced the flathead V8 engine in its passenger and commercial vehicles while still building the lower-priced four cylinder models. “Everything is different on the 1932 V8 engine. It’s the first year for the V8 engine with parts being very expensive and you just can’t find them,” Del says, recalling the painstaking details of restoring the truck with every part exactly as original. The truck is painted Vermilion Red and Raven Bßlack, original 1932 Ford colours. Del and Claudine trailer the truck to shows along with their 1956 Ford Thunderbird. “It is very rare to see a 1932 Ford pickup truck restored

Oldest Ford vehicle returns home to kick off Henry Ford 150th celebration A key part of Ford Motor Company’s heritage returns home as a Model A built in 1903 is again with the Ford family, kicking off the year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of company founder Henry Ford. Considered the oldest surviving Ford vehicle, the 1903 Model A was unveiled today to Ford Motor Company employees by Executive Chairman Bill Ford, who purchased the vehicle at an auction in October. “The timing was perfect to bring this key part of Ford heritage back to the family as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of my greatgrandfather’s birth and his vision to improve people’s lives by making cars affordable for the average family,” said Bill Ford. “His vision to build cars that are reasonably priced, reliable and efficient still resonates and defines our vision today as well.” MotorCities National Heritage Area and the Henry Ford Heritage Association teamed up with more than 30 Henry Ford-related collaborators to coordinate the year-long celebration of events. These activities, highlighting Ford’s legacy, contributions and influence, include tours, educational programming, dramatic re-enactments, lectures, integration and special events at auto shows and more. A dedicated website, www. henryford150.com, is also launching that includes an interactive timeline of Ford’s life, tours, a calendar of 2013 events and information about efforts to

The Model A returning home played a pivotal role in Ford Motor Company history. In July 1903, Henry Ford faced a daunting situation: The company’s cash balance stood at less than $250. A much-needed cash infusion arrived on July 13, 1903: One full payment and two deposits totaling $1,320 for three Model A cars kept Ford Motor Company afloat. The car revealed today is a red 1903 Model A Rear Entry Tonneau. It is believed to be car No. 3, chassis No. 30, and the lone survivor of the group of three Model A cars sold on that day. The seemingly humble household chair has just undergone a Vorsprung durch Technik makeover inspired by the Audi sports prototype that competed in the Le Mans 24-hour race this year, resulting in a tremendous 1-2-3 finish. The visually stunning R18 Ultra Chair was revealed earlier this month at the prestigious Design Miami show to a global audience. Masterminded by designers Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram, and developed using the most efficient and sustainable processes, the R18 Ultra Chair is made from a mix of carbon fibre, carbon and high-strength sheet aluminum. This combination guarantees maximum stability and comfort with minimum consumption of materials, and also ensures that the chair is almost feather-light to lift. In conjunction with engineers at the Audi Lightweight Construction Centre, the designers used the data to optimize their prototype, resulting in a finished product which embodies

The technology, previewed near the manufacturer’s European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, showcases Hyundai’s expertise in creating clever new technology for its range of cars and is expected as soon as 2015. Shown on Hyundai’s award-winning New Generation i30, the Connectivity Concept allows the user to lock and unlock the car by placing their smartphone over an NFC-tag (Near Field Communication), negating the need for a traditional key fob. Once inside, the device is placed in the centre console, which then activates the user’s profile by streaming content to the i30’s seven-inch touchscreen. All user content such as music, phone
contacts, radio station preferences and individual profile settings are displayed. In addition the device’s battery is recharged wirelessly while in use. Multiple users can be synced with car, meaning set-up is quick and easy as the Connectivity Concept in the i30 tailors in-car settings according to each driver’s smartphone. Furthermore, the Connectivity Concept utilizes MirrorLink to wirelessly access and control personal content through the touchscreen including navigation, internet-based applications and multimedia. Hyundai has already announced a joint development agreement with Broadcom Corporation, which will power the next generation of connected cars. With this technology, functions such as infotainment, telematics and other driver assistance systems like reverse parking cameras and lane departure warning will be integrated into Hyundai’s cars.

Cadillac’s ATS is the winner of the 2013 Best of the Best award, the Canadian Automotive Jury (CAJ) announced live on CTV’s Canada AM Wednesday. The ATS beat out 11 other finalists, which included a wide variety of vehicles available to Canadian newcar buyers, including sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, SUVs, crossovers and sports and performance cars. The 2013 Best of the Best award was to be presented to General Motors for its Cadillac ATS Jan. 17 in Montreal at the opening of the Montreal Motor Show. Also on Monday, the ATS was named North American Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show. The CAJ’s Best of the Best finalists don’t exclusively focus on a specific model within a family of vehicles or only “all-new” models, and they include the reigning Best of the Best winner from the previous year, which is an automatic finalist. For 2013, four European, four Japanese, three domestic and one Korean models made up the Best of the Best finalists, which, along with the winning ATS, included the following: Audi A7 (2012 Best of the Best winner); Buick Verano; Ford Fusion; Honda Accord; Kia Rio; Mazda CX-5; Porsche Boxster; Porsche 911; Scion FR-S; Subaru BRZ and Volkswagen Golf R.

Subaru Canada, Inc. has announced the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has recognized Subaru as the only automaker earning a 2013 Top Safety Pick award for every model it builds. This is the fourth consecutive year Subaru has earned this distinction. New for 2013, Subaru’s Legacy and Outback models (built after August 2012) have also won the brand new Top Safety Pick + accolade. To reward 2013 models with superior crash protection, IIHS has newly created the Top Safety Pick + award, which requires good ratings for occupant protection in at least four of five IIHS evaluations, including the new
Small Overlap test, with no less than acceptable in any test. IIHS introduced the small overlap test in 2012 to further improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. While most automakers design their vehicles for good performance in the IIHS moderate overlap frontal test and the federal government’s full-width frontal test, many haven’t addressed the issue of small overlap crashes, which can account for nearly a quarter of all frontal crashes involving serious or fatal injury to front seat occupants. This test replicates what happens when the front corner of a car collides with another vehicle or a static object like a tree or utility pole. The IIHS will announce additional winners as it continues to test models. Results for small SUVs are expected this spring.
